The metallurgical gas handling system at Chagres Smelter, like that of many smelters, can be the limiting constraint to processing more concentrate through the smelter. Mass and energy balances for the metallurgical gas handling system processing off-gases from the flash furnace and Peirce-Smith converters have been used by both operations and process engineering groups to help evaluate different operational scenarios in which the use of the installed capacity could be maximized and/or an operational strategy can be change with the purpose of removing a bottleneck or justifying an investment to relieve a constraint in the gas handling system. The present work describes the development of these process balances that were carried out in Exce®. The results were validated with operational data and, subsequently, some cases of industrial interest were simulated, detecting some conditions that were limiting the operation due to the present installed capacity in the Chagres Smelter.

"This article is directed at plant production, engineering and maintenance personnel. Seldom does any industrial operation take the time to study the costs involved in the generation of what is probably their most expensive plant utility energy source.IntroductionIn the typical industrial plant in Canada, a 200 hp, 900 cfm, air compressor costs about $60,000* per year to operate (Fig. 1). In 1989 when BC Hydro embarked on their industrial energy management program Airflow Energy Ltd. were asked to spearhead the “Efficiency Compressed Air” portion of that program with a mandate to perform onsite overview surveys and physical hands-on testing of some 300 selected industrial plants throughout British Columbia for compressor efficiencies and wasteful air leaks (Fig. 2). The program duration lasted until 1995, during which time a tremendous amount of data were amassed relating to equipment types, clients’ operating habits, end-use applications and operating costs.During the past six years, Airflow Energy also performed somewhat similar surveys but on a smaller scale in Alberta, Ontario, the United States and the Republic of China. It was no surprise to find some inherent equipment concerns related to efficiency as well as neglected energy wasteful air leaks, so British Columbia was not alone and the problems appear somewhat universal."

The thorough analysis of results obtained from different testing campaigns performed on an alumina dry-scrubber pilot installation treating aluminum potline offgases, suggests a clear relationship between the emissions of gaseous fluoride and the fluoride saturation level of the alumina. The integration of this relationship into the development of a new generation of alumina dry scrubber represents an intriguing challenge regarding the design of more efficient air pollution control equipment. An innovative scheme challenging conventional industry practices was proposed. From theoretical simulations, the reduction in fluoride emissions can potentially be reduced by as much as 50% in the summer season. To validate this innovative approach, Solios in partnership with Alcoa Primary Metals, modified one of the Aluminerie de Deschambault's systems by adding new temporary equipment on the operating units and subjecting it to several test campaigns. This article presents the first results obtained in testing this new and innovative approach on alumina dry scrubbers used to capture fluoride emissions coming from aluminum electrolysis potlines.

The current focus of research and development in transportation industry is to use lightweight materials such as aluminium alloys for more structural components. In this regard, maintaining safety of the passenger and vehicle is the most important; therefore crashworthiness of components made of lightweight materials must be evaluated prior to sizable application of these materials. The focus of the present study is to understand failure and damage mechanisms during the axial crushing of aluminium tubes made of A1Mg3.5Mn alloy of 2 and 3.5 mm thickness. Due mainly to complexity of the crushed tubes, a microstructural approach is considered. In this study optical, stereo as well as scanning electron microscopy techniques have been used to study damage and failure mechanisms in these types of tubes, which are essential energy absorbing components in passenger vehicles.

This work details the application of a decentralized control strategy to a pilot flotation column working with a two-phase system (water-air). The process is represented by a multivariable system composed of three inputs and three outputs. The selected control variables are the froth depth, the air hold-up and the bias rate, whereas the corresponding manipulated variables are the set-points of the local flow controllers of tailings, air and wash water. All controlled variables are estimated using electrical conductivity based techniques. In particular, the results of a new method for estimating the bias rate, based on the measurement of the volumetric fraction of wash water under the interface, is presented. This method reduces the coupling problem associated to the bias estimation as a difference between feed and tailing water rates. Moreover, the nominal system transfer matrix can be represented by an upper triangular matrix, in such a way that the closed-loop system stability reduces to the stability of the independent control loops. The experimental results show that the closed-loop system performance, particularly that of the bias rate loop, is strongly dependent on the air flow rate, reaching in some cases the saturation point of the controller.

IN discussing stope filling, or backfilling, at the Sullivan mine, at Kimberley, B.C., a brief description of the problem will first be presented. The Sullivan orebody is a replacement in quartzite, with the ore con-forming, for the most part, with the bedding. The dip of the vein, apart from local irregularities, averages about 15 degrees near the outcrop in the southwest section of the mine, and steepens to almost 40 degrees at the northeast end of the mine. The thickness varies from a few feet to over 200 feet at the widest sections. The mineable length along the strike has averaged about 4,000 feet between the 4,600 and 3,900 levels-the section under discussion in this paper. To date, 28,000,000 tons of ore have been mined by the room-and-pillar method. Prior to 1930, all ground opened up had been supported by ore pillars, left during mining operations. From that time, the recovery of the ore from these pillars has been given serious consideration. Backfilling, as being carried on today, is the result of this study and is being done for two reasons: (1) to allow extraction of the ore pillars, and (2) to minimize subsidence of the hanging-wall rock, except where forced caving is found desirable. PRELIMINARY DEVELOPMENTS LEADING TO BACKFILLING When the Sullivan orebody was first opened up, early in the century, there appeared to be low-grade sections of the vein sufficient in extent to serve as permanent support for the roof. However, as mining extended into sections of the vein that showed continuous ore over greater areas, wooden cribs, filled with waste and low-grade ore, were erected. In some stopes, these cribs were as large as 40 ft. by 100 ft. in plan and from 50 ft. to 60 ft. in height, but it was soon realized that this method of support was inadequate. As mining progressed, it was found necessary to leave ore pillars, which eventually became the sole system of support. At first, these pillars were left at irregular intervals, but later they were laid out at definite locations on the mine plans, and these locations were adhered to as closely as mining would permit.

The Pembina Cardium pool is a low permeability, stratified, solution-gas drive reservoir. Water-flooding has proven to be an effective means of pressure maintenance for all areas of the pool in which an economic rate of water injection can be maintained. The majority of water injection wells in the pool are converted oil well~ with capacities greater than 100 millidarcy-feet. If the average injection rate per unit of capacity can be in-creased the lower capacity areas of the pool can be economically flooded. Theory, laboratory work, and two . early miscible-flooding projects with-in the pool suggested that average water injection rates for converted wells could be increased two to three-fold by the initial injection of natural gas liquids and natural gas. In the flotation of a copper ore, entrainment of fine silicate and iron sulfide gangue minerals resulted in poor copper concentrate grade. In the cleaning stage, rejection of these gangue minerals was particularly difficult due to severe mechanical entrainment when the rougher concentrate was ground to 10 µm. To reduce gangue entrainment, polymeric depressants were tested. The rationale being that with the use of such polymeric depressants that also possess flocculation power, not only minerals-to-be-depressed can be made hydrophilic, but their particle size can also be enlarged. In this manner both the "genuine" flotation and the mechanical entrainment can be reduced. An effective polymer to reduce entrainment of silicate gangue mineral in sulfide flotation was identified from bench flotation tests conducted on single minerals. It was then applied to the flotation of a copper-gold ore confirming the beneficial role of the polymeric depressant in the reduction of fine gangue entrainment.

This paper is intended to deal merely with the commercial development of some of the principal non-metallic mineral resources in the three prairie provinces- Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Coal is not included in this summary. Building Stone First and foremost, mention may be made of the building stone now being produced at Tyndall, Manitoba. This is a mottled limestone and is declared by experts to be one of the finest building stones in America, both as regards durability and appearance. It has been used very extensively both for exterior and interior work, not only in western Canada, but also in the principal cities as far east as Montreal. The stone is the "'Upper Mottled Limestone", which forms the summit of the Trenton (Ordovician) strata in the Lake Winnipeg basin. Quarries are at present being operated at Garson and Tyndall . The area where this stone is known to be available extends in a north and south direction for a distance of three miles, and the main productive ridge is probably about one half mile wide. The outlook for the future of the industry is extremely promising, as the stone is becoming increasingly popular in Eastern Canada, more particularly for interior work.

Manganese is a main ingredient for production of steel. Almost 90% manganese is being utilized by the steel industry worldwide. Globally, there is no substitute for manganese as on date. There is huge gap between demand and production of manganese ore in the country. To meet this demand gap and to support for growth of national economy, MOIL Limited (formerly Manganese Ore India Limited), a Government Enterprises, producing annually around 1.1 million tonnes (mt) of manganese ore and value added products, has geared up with various infrastructural activities to increase the present production capacity of 1.1?1.5 mt in 2016?2017 and 2.2 mt in 2020?2021. The paper deals with the technological improvements and infrastructural development activities of MOIL; this will help MOIL to become the market leader in manganese ore production globally in the coming years.

Magnesium, the lightest structural metal, has not yet been considered as a serious contestant for automotive use due to its weaknesses in corrosion. Electroless nickel-boron alloys are well known for their corrosion resistance and hardness. An electroless nickel-boron layer was successfully deposited first on the chemical conversion pre-treated AZ31 alloy and also on the Ni-P coating which was deposited on the conversion coating. The electroless bath contained nickel sulphate and dimethylamine borane (DMAB) as main salts and the samples were activated by a 5 g/L AgNO3 solution before the electroless plating process. The presence of the conversion coating between the nickel coating and the AZ31 substrate acted as a barrier and prevented corrosion of the alloy. The morphology of the nickel-boron layer was studied using SEM. The crystal structure and the composition were examined by EDS and the hardness was measured. The corrosion behaviour of the nickel-boron layer deposited on the conversion coating and on the Ni-P coating was studied using potentiodynamic polarization in a 0.5M NaC1 solution. A saturated standard calomel electrode was used as a reference electrode. The results show that the nickel-boron coatings had a significantly better corrosion resistance than the AZ31.

"Fording Coal Limited is one of Canada's largest producers of metallurgical coal for the export market. Medium- to highvolatile coals are mined at its Fording River operations in southeastern British Columbia. This paper discusses some of the mine design and production related problems encountered, and how they have been resolved. Other aspects of the operation such as geography, geology and standard mining methods employed are also covered.IntroductionFording Coal Limited was formed in 1968 to mine and market metallurgical coal resources held by the company in the East Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia<1>. The company, at its Fording River operations, holds approximately 19,635 hectares of coal lands, having an estimated resource of 3.5 billion tonnes of metallurgical coal. Total reserves are approximately 520 million tonnes.Fording Coal is owned 600Jo by Canadian Pacific Enterprises Limited and 400Jo by Cominco Limited. Cominco itself is owned approximately 540Jo by Canadian Pacific Enterprises. The company, originally staffed and managed by Cominco, has been independent since January 1978, with its own board of directors, management, staff and employees. The head office is in Calgary, Alberta. The Fording River operations are located in British Columbia, approximately 70 km north of the Crowsnest Pass, near the Alberta/ British Columbia boundary, only 150 km by air and 320 km by road from Calgary.A contract was signed in 1969 with the Japanese steel mills to provide 45. 7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal over fifteen years, commencing in 1972, at an annual rate of 3 .05 million tonnes per year. The mine is presently expanding annual production capacity from the original 3.0 million long tons (3.05 million tonnes) to in excess of 5.0 million tonnes.Concurrent with this production expansion, a vigorous marketing effort has diversified Fording's customers to include additional countries in the Pacific Rim area. Three cleaned coal products are now marketed compared to the single ""standard blend"" product originally shipped to satisfy the Japanese contract. The product specifications are listed in Table I."

Abosso Goldfields Limited has been optimizing the comminution circuit at the Damang Mine Operation for the treatment of 100% primary ore. The optimization process started at a base rate of 343 tph when treating primary crushed primary ore, and was increased to above 600 tph with partially crushed primary ore. Abosso Goldfields engaged Orway Mineral Consultants (OMC) to assist with the optimization process in 2009 and the two companies have been working together since, to further refine the process. Continuous improvement was achieved through crushing circuit modifications, changes in operating processes and grinding control system utilization. This paper discusses the improvements developed for the increase in milling capacity and improvements in final product size.

"Two structures, a fracture zone and a shear zone, contained the two orebodies that yielded all the ore mined at the Gold Eagle mine. The orebodies are known as the Gold Eagle vein and the No. 1 shear zone. Both structures occur close to contacts between Timiskaming sediments, Algoman diorite, and later Algoman granite-granodiorite. The structures were produced by compressive forces from a south direction acting in the southern part of the McKenzie-Gold Eagle stock and in a cylindrically shaped inclusion of Timiskaming sediments.The mine, which exhausted its ore reserves and ceased operations in September of 1941, is on the east side of Mackenzie island, in the centre of Dome township in the Red Lake area.The Gold Eagle vein was located during the summer of 1933 by a surface exploration programme carried out under the direction of Alex Gillies. Sub-· sequent diamond drilling and underground exploration led to the installation of a mill, which came into production in October of 1937. The No. 1 shear zone was discovered and explored later from a drive on the 500-foot level. The mine produced a total of 40,204 oz. gold and 19,157 oz. silver from 223,628 tons of ore hoisted (180,095 tons milled) during its 4 years of mill operation.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe ore-bearing structures trend S.61°E. across Timiskaming greywacke, Algoman diorite, and later Algoman granite-granodiorite. The greywacke is a large, cylindrically shaped mass that is separated from the mai~ mass by the later intrusives. It is a massive, light-coloured, quartzose variety that has been recrystallized by the enclosing granite. The diorite and the granite-granodiorite are early and late components of the McKenzie-Gold Eagle stock. The diorite, which is a porphyritic rock containing large crystals of andesine-labradorite surrounded by hornblende, was injected early in the Algoman period. It was intruded and in large measure surrounded by the later granite-granodiorite. This rock varies from a granodiorite near the mine to a granite in the centre of the stock. All three intrusions are massive and homogeneous."

"High pressure die casting is a promising process to make thin-wall components with high dimensional accuracy and excellent surface quality. However, the non-uniformity is one of the important features in castings. The inhomogeneity in tensile properties and microstructural characteristics were studied for the castings with different thicknesses made by high pressure die-cast Al-Mg-Si alloys. For the local mechanical properties in the die-castings, the casting skin provided the highest, whereas the casting centre provided the lowest yield strength, UTS and elongation. The yield strength, UTS and elongation were significantly decreased towards the casting centre. The microstructural inhomogeneity is characterised by the segregation of coarse fragmented dendrites, the reduction of solute concentrations of Mg and Si, and the increase of porosity level from the surface to the centre of castings. The growth velocities of eutectic a-Al phase estimated using the Jackson-Hunt model confirm that the growth variation is larger in the thin castings than that in thick castings.INTRODUCTION Inhomogeneity is an inherent characteristic in as-cast microstructures of a variety of alloys because of their non-uniform chemistry, microstructure, defects, topology and the resultant mechanical properties in the different ranges of localization (Campbell, 2003). Generally, three types of inhomogeneities characterise casting microstructures, which include (a) the casting defects of shrinkage and gas porosity, misruns, cold shuts, inclusions, hot tears and hot spots; (b) the non-uniform microstructure from the surface to the centre of castings; and (c) the non-uniform microstructure from the dendrites grown from primary solidification and the structure formed during the subsequent eutectic solidification in inter-dendritic regions. The chemical composition and the morphology between the primary dendrites and the inter-dendritic eutectics also differ in the as-cast microstructure. Obviously, the inhomogeneity is different in the castings obtained from different casting processes."

Core drilling is a fundamental process in the mineral exploration industry. As deep exploration in hard rocks is accelerated due to the depletion of near ground mineral resources, deep-drilling operations need to reduce their reliance in operators experience and begin to implement new technologies in order to increase efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the overall process. Currently, lack of real-time information on the bit/rock interaction is a major problem. Therefore the mechanism behind the acoustic emission, which is a proven technique for remote monitoring, generation in mechanical rock cutting must be understood in order to provide real time information about the rock. This paper aims to identify the influence of mineral composition of granitic rocks on the acoustic emission (AE) during rock abrasivity test with a single contact tool and to evaluate the feasibility of AE as a means to infer Cerchar Abrasivity Index (CAI). Single contact tool will provide precise and accurate description of the source of AE. To provide constant grooving speed Cerchar apparatus was modified to monitor AE during rock/tool interaction. Tests on the modified Cerchar apparatus are carried out under the static load of 70N and cutting speed of 1 mm/s. A Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) is utilized to visualize the groove in the rock and to identify the mineral composition through Back-Scattered Electrons (BSE) reflected from the rock sample. Based on the microscope images, it was found that biotite shows a larger groove area and plate-like fractures accompanied with burst-type AE signal, whereas plagioclase and quartz, which are characterized by similar hardness and BSE brightness, possess shattered-like fractures and more continuous-type AE signals. In addition, a-value of the Gutenberg-Richter scale has been found to well correlate with Cerchar Abrasivity Index (CAI).

A semi-automatic device has been constructed that can be used to check the solution strength of cyanide solutions. It consists of a wheel on which a gold-foil-bearing glass slide is mounted. The wheel moves the gold foil through the solution under test and intercepts a light beam. As the gold foil is attacked by the cyanide solution its light absorption diminishes. The successive in-crease in transmitted light intensity is recorded and gives a measure of the gold dissolution rate. Curves have been obtained to show the effect of cyanide concentration and oxygen content on dissolution rates. "Placer Dome Inc. is the operator of the Musselwhite project located 100km north of Pickle Lake, Ontario. J.S. Redpath Limited was contracted to conduct an underground exploration program using shaft access.During the winter of1988, the shaft collar was established in 16 metres of water bearing sand and till overburden. This paper will illustrates the engineering techniques used to overcome the obstacles to installing a shaft collar in deep overburden. Specialized dewatering and piling procedures were employed.INTRODUCTIONHarold and Allan Musselwhite discovered gold in the Opapimiskan Lake area, north of Pickle Lake, in 1962. The prospectors were grubstaked by ten companies in 1973.A diamond drill program was initiated shortly thereafter.In 1983an underground ramp exploration program was carried out on the West Anticline portion of the property. The program was unsuccessful in establishing an ore reserve so surface exploration continued. In 1986the ""T"" zone was discovered. Further surface drilling was done and an over-all drill-indicated reserve of 6 million tonnes at 7 grams per tonne was outlined. The gold mineralization occurs in several vertical tabular deposits within the iron formation. "Several Fe, Fe-Cu, and Cu-Ag prospects hosted by Mesozoic carbonate-rich sedimentary rocks that were intruded by diorite stocks define an approximately 20 × 200 km belt along the Andes Cordillera of southwest Mendoza province, Argentina (34°-36°S). This belt includes the Hierro Indio and Vegas Peladas Fe skarns, Las Choicas, and several other Cu-(Ag) prospects.The main features of the Fe skarns include: association with mantle-derived middle Miocene (~15-11 Ma) diorite stocks and sills; widespread alteration including epidote ± amphibole ± magnetite endoskarns, and zoned garnet (Grs0-66 Adr32.5-100) ± magnetite ± pyroxene (Di24-50 Jo2-9 Hd74-41) exoskarns formed from oxidized, saline, high-temperature brines (530º-660ºC; 60-70 wt.% NaCl equiv.); and magnetite-hematite orebodies associated with quartz ± epidote ± calcite ± actinolite formed at lower temperatures (290º-436ºC) from saline fluids (32-50 wt.% NaCl equiv.) of magmatic origin.West of the Fe skarn belt, the Valle Hermoso district covers more than 300 km2 and hosts several poorly known Cu-(Ag) prospects (estimated 30 Mt with 1.5% Cu and 20 g/t Ag). These prospects share many characteristics with the iron oxide copper-gold-type systems and manto-type Cu deposits of northern and central Chile. One of the prospects (Las Choicas) is located at the apex of a regional 015°-trending anticline, along the contact of stratified calcareous sandstone and limestone (Neocallovian-Oxfordian) with a diorite pluton. This pluton has positive Ta and Nb anomalies (on normalized diagrams) and a high Ti content, features uncommon in Miocene diorites associated with Fe skarns and of magmas derived from sub-arc mantle sources. Alteration at Las Choicas includes early widespread chlorite + calcite ± albite ± scapolite ± ilmenite or titanite ± apatite, and local actinolite ± hematite ± biotite alteration of diorite and sedimentary rocks along contacts. Later Cu mineralization (1%-10% Cu) is associated with calcite ± albite ± quartz alteration in fractures, vein networks, and crackle breccias. Mineralization is zoned from bornite ± chalcopyrite ± millerite with Zn, As, Mo, Ag, and U anomalies in the main orebody, through chalcopyrite-rich breccias with Zn anomalies, and chalcopyrite ± tetrahedrite vein networks with Sb, As, Ag, and Zn anomalies in the uppermost zone, to a Cu-depleted pyrite-rich envelope with Co anomalies, and finally to late, barren calcite veins in distal zones."

The efficiency of the electrowinning process of zinc depends on the performance of oxygen evolution reaction, anode quality and corrosion resistance of lead anodes. Original surfaces of rolled commercial lead-silver anodes were examined using conventional polarisation methods in acid zinc sulfate electrolyte with manganese sulphate at 38 °C. The self-discharge method (potential decay) following 5 h polarisation at 50 mA cm-2 was considered to evaluate electrochemical activity, oxygen overpotential and anode stability. The influence of silver content is compared to that of the microstructure, the fabrication process and the composition of the corrosion products. Polished anode samples have also been examined for microstructural and corrosion performance studies. The experiments show that the duration of the plateau at 1600 mV versus SHE, the potential level (active corrosion state/stationary state) and the rate AEco/At during the decay could be a good indicator to compare the corrosion rates of the anodes in industrial zinc electrolytes.
