The degradation of thiocyanate in a simulated gold mill effluent was studied using a laboratory scale rotating biological contactor (RBC). Complete SCN- removal was obtained at temperatures of 8 and 12°C, and a hydraulic retention time of approximately 3.3 h. The NH4+ produced by thiocyanate hydrolysis was oxidized by nitrifying bacteria to NO2 and NO3-. The HS- produced by thiocyanate hydrolysis was chemically and biologically oxidized to elemental S, which was subsequently biologically oxidized to sulfate. Incomplete sulfur oxidation occurred in the RBC, particularly at 8°C and elemental sulfur deposition was observed on the RBC disks. The RBC feed exhibited toxicity to rainbow trout but the RBC was effective in removing the acute toxicity of thiocyanate.

With the ever increasing demand for commodities, due to changes in lifestyle and increase in population, people are striving to find ways to keep up. Mining is one essential element in the solution. Though being a powerful boost to a country?s economy, mining can have disastrous effects in the absence of waste management practice and technologies; because of the harmful heavy metals and toxic chemical waste that is generated as a by-product in mining operations. It is an established and documented fact that pollution is a major concern for communities having to live with it. Disproportionate water consumption significantly impacts local rivers and ponds thereby reducing freshwater availability and have given rise to social conflict. In light of these misgivings, management and treatment of mine water and waste has gained considerable attention recently. In this paper, we summarize some of the treatment methods that can be adopted by mining companies to reduce their environmental footprint. Appropriate treatment solutions depend on various factors including available space and capital cost for treatment solutions, type of mining waste generated, current state of the mining plant, geographical location, and other location specific issues. Incorporating waste and water management solutions as a priority within mining operations is critical for addressing increasing regulatory requirements and a starting point for initiating other Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs. Collaboration among mining companies, NGOs, local community, and government facilitates successful projects which build trust leading to long term relationships. In this paper we also talk about the benefits of implementing a CSR project that captures the focus of local communities and allows the mining company to focus on operations. Implementing a sustainable business model that incorporates the broader community impacted by projects will continue to benefit even after the mining company ceases operation in that location. The challenges involved with implementing effective CSR projects, which require measuring and reporting effectiveness to create a positive social, economic, and environmental impact is also presented in this paper.

"The Mac porphyry molybdenum prospect is located 100 km east of Smithers in central British Columbia. The identification of anomalous levels of molybdenum, copper, and silver in three adjacent lakes, sampled during a regional lake sediment survey, lead to the discovery of molybdenite mineralization in float. Subsequent magnetic and soil geochemistry surveys, together with prospecting and mapping, located the source of the float. Mineralization is hosted by a leucocratic granite stock of the Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous Francois Lake Intrusions which has intruded Carboniferous and Permian Cache Creek Group volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The stock measures 500 m by 300m at surface and is mineralized throughout. Sulphide mineralogy is simple and consists of molybdenite with minor pyrite and local chalcopyrite. Molybdenite occurs within fractures and as selvages along quartz stockwork veins and is best developed near the margins of the stock.Known mineralization is coincident with distinct soil geochemistry and magnetic anomalies. Two additional areas of the property display similar features and these remain to be tested.IntroductionThe Mac property is situated in the Babine Lake area of central British Columbia on NTS map sheet 93K/13E, approximately 100 km east of the town of Smithers (Fig. 1). The property lies on the western margin of the Hogem Range at the northern tip of the Nechako Plateau. The centre of the claim block lies at 54°51 ' 30""N and 125 °34 '30""W.Topographically, the claims are characterized by gently rolling hills ranging in elevation from 900 m to 1500 m. Slopes are forested with tall conifers and underbrush is minimal. Flat-lying areas are swampy with tall grasses and scrub brush.Presently, the property is only accessible by helicopter from bases located in Smithers and Fort St. James. Recent road construction by the British Columbia Forest Service has brought road access from Burns Lake to within 5 km due south of the property. It is expected that in the near future, roads will be advanced into the claim area to facilitate logging of mature timber."

"IntroductionMaintenance is a business, which to be successful, requires good management, systems and reporting. The prime objective of the maintenance management group, be they large or small, must be to anticipate and prevent interruptions in operations by keeping equipment in good mechanical condition. This objective should be carried out at minimum cost consistent with maximum productiveness.The objective of this chapter is to give an insight into the various aspects of maintenance management that must be considered to effectively and efficiently operate a mill complex. The degree to which the maintenance sub-systems are developed in an operating mill will be determined by the size of the mill and the needs of the operation.The criterion of the management system used is that the system serve the operation and not vice versa. The systems presented should be considered as tools and, as with all tools, they must be sharpened and replaced as the need arises or as more effective tools become available.To understand what is involved in maintenance management, it is worthwhile to consider a systems approach to analyzing management problems. This approach was developed by J.A.B. Rae while reviewing maintenance management systems for Cominco Ltd.A very simple system involving managing results and objectives is shown diagrammatically in Figure 1.The systems approach to organizational development involves four basic elements: an objective, a result, an activity and feedback. In the analysis, the activity element is broken down into individual actions that people could be held responsible for. If we introduce the action of operating into the diagram of Figure l, we arrive diagrammatically in Figure 2."

"This contribution describes linkage of stress concentration at the face of tabular excavations, for example, longwall coal mine panels, at a meter scale to surface subsidence at a kilometer scale. Joints are considered according to orientation and spacing at an intermediate scale. A new dual-node, dual-mesh technique based on first principles uses a multi-scale technique that allows for computing whole mine surface subsidence while also allowing for computational details of stress, strain and displacement about main entries and pillars, panel entries, and bleeder entries. The technique is implemented in a conventional continuous Galerkin finite element program that has been in use for many years.The advantage of the dual-node, dual-mesh technique is the capability to do a whole mine analysis that takes into account interaction between all sections of a mine where stress transfer over long distances is often the rule rather than the exception while at the same time allowing for details of stress concentration at working faces where caving is initiated and subsidence begins. The technique, outlined recently during ARMA 2014 (Pariseau, 2014), is applied to an underground coal mine in central Utah where mines are developed from outcrops in steep canyon walls. Meshes contain over 10 million, three-dimensional nodes; runtimes are typically overnight, as a practical matter. Results compare favorably with mine subsidence measurements made over a period of several years and show the capability of this new technique to provide useful design guidance for tabular deposits such as underground coal mines. The role of variability or uncertainty in strata properties is illustrated in element safety factor distributions about development, bleeder and main entries and pillars. Such details are new in this contribution. Energy tracking for mine-induced seismicity is also new. Results show a high correlation between number of events and failed elements and suggest a simple index to mine induced seismicity."

"In the changing global market scenario for raw materials for the steel industry, a number of novel iron- and steelmaking process technologies are being developed to provide the steel companies with economically-sustainable alternatives for iron- and steel-making. In addition, the steel industry is also focusing on reduction of energy consumption as well as green-house gas (GHG) emissions to address the crucial subject of climate change. In this context, it is important to assess these critical issues for the alternate iron- and steelmaking technologies that have been developed. This paper presents a comparative evaluation of energy-efficiency and GHG emissions for some selected iron- and steelmaking technologies that are being considered for implementation. In this work, Hatch’s G-CAP™ and En-MAP™ tools that were developed with the main objective of quantifying and qualifying the potential energy savings and CO2 abatement within the iron and steel industry, were employed in the evaluation conducted. INTRODUCTIONThe iron and steel industry continues to transform itself and evolve in the ever-changing global market place – the raw material scenario is constantly changing with respect to quality and quantity (availability), there is stiff competition in both global and local markets, and there is increasing pressure to address global climate change issues, especially since the steel industry is highly energy- and carbonintensive. There is growing importance of steel production in developing countries such as China and India – this means that the steel industry in these countries will play an important role in defining and shaping the future of the industry.Climate change is expected to present new risks to the steel industry with respect to ensuring a sustainable business. Legislators are proposing to limit GHG emission by placing an implicit price on CO2 emission - market-based “cap and trade”, carbon tax etc.. In this scenario, it is important for the steel companies to reduce exposure to climate-related risks and at the same time, find business opportunities within these risks. Thus, there is a need to strategically manage the climate change risks; the key steps to strategically manage climate change risks are presented in Table 1[1]."

After nine years on a 36 hour schedule and two programs of creeping, the Alcoa Deschambault Potroom of faced the necessity of changing its organization for many reasons: the anodes butts were too small, the anode schedule was unbalanced, the iron content in the metal trends had increased, the metal tapping volume did not convene with crucible capacity and the liquid measurement task was delayed by tapping activities. A kaizen activity inspired the Potroom department to improve the organization. A team of 15 people including the process engineer, the process technician, team supervisors and Potroom operators developed a scenario, which would permit flexibility to creep pots if energy is available and an increase of added value production.This paper will describe the systematic approach, the communication method, the trials, the changes, and our success, along with the problems experienced by the team during the adaptation of Alcoa Deschambault Potroom organization over a 20 month period. "IntroductionThe Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) located in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, in eastern Canada, was established in 1967. Its mandate at that time was to facilitate a phased downsizing of the coal industry and developing viable replacement industries. The oil crisis in the early 1970s changed CBDC’s mandate and focus was modified to increase coal production to support Nova Scotia Power Commission’s “off oil” policy for their power generators. In the late 1980s the mandate to develop viable replacement industries was eliminated and CBDC became primarily a coal mining company. CBDC presently operates two underground coal mines, Phalen Colliery and Prince Colliery, using a retreat longwall method of mining. Both mines operate beneath the Atlantic Ocean. CBDC also operates associated infrastructure — central workshops, a railroad, coal preparation plant, and international pier. The Need For Substantial ChangeOver the last few years, CBDC has been facing some challenging issues, including improving labour management relations and achieving financial self-sufficiency and profitability. Recent achievements with regard to human resource issues, especially in the areas of collective bargaining, absenteeism, and attendance, show noticeable improvements. All participants should be commended for successfully concluding the collective bargaining process with all four CBDC unions, CUPE; CAW; IAM&AW; and UMWA. However, although these changes are encouraging, even critical in the short term, they are not sufficient to ensure the long-term viability of the company. Market ForcesShort- and long-term financial realities are drawing the need for further substantive changes. The corporation has a mandate to achieve financial self-sufficiency by the year 1999. This goal can only be achieved through a combination of cost reductions and productivity gains, specifically, a reduction in the workforce of 658 and an increase in production of 800 000 tonnes annually. This increase in productivity requires CBDC to re-think the way it does things.In the longer term, CBDC faces even greater challenges. The energy market is becoming more competitive. The electrical utilities across Canada are anticipating deregulation and are positioning themselves for the resultant competition. As primary fuel supplier to Nova Scotia Power Inc. (NSPI), the corporation will have to become ever more competitive to stay in business."

In the processing of rare earth ores, a pure, mixed rare earth chloride solution is usually produced and used as the feed to solvent extraction circuits to separate the individual rare earths. Cerium(III) may be separated from the other rare earths by oxidising it to cerium(IV), which precipitates as cerium(IV) hydroxide in chloride liquors. This oxidation step may be inserted either before rare earth separation by solvent extraction or between solvent extraction circuits. Although oxidation of cerium by sodium hypochlorite has been known for many years, detailed conditions for oxidation are not readily available. The subject of gold flotation has been reviewed extensively in a number of publications. The focus in most of these reviews has been on the theories of gold flotation as well as the physical and chemical effects that may impact the efficacy of the gold flotation process. It is evident that the current status of gold flotation chemistry as it is being applied in industry has not been addressed widely. It is the intent of this paper to review current gold flotation practice and how these applications tie in with the current understanding of the chemistry of gold flotation.

Electro-spark deposition (ESD) has recently generated a great deal of interest in processing aerospace materials. This is due to its potential for joining and repairing difficult-to-weld precipitation strengthened nickel-based superalloys without having problems of welding cracking that often plaque these materials. The short duration of current pulses involved in the process combined with the intermittent contact results in extremely rapid thermal cycle that produces nearly no heat affected zone in the substrate material. The microstructure of electro-spark deposited superalloy was meticulously studied in this work by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that in contrast to general assumption, the extreme rapid cooling rates involved in the ESD process did not produce partition-less solidification that is devoid of second phase microconstituents in the material. The secondary microconstituents were found formed along the intercellular regions of the solidification microstructure. The nature of these particles and the possible implication of their formation on mechanical properties of ESD processed material are reported and discussed.

"The removal of iron asgoethite from the high iron bearing solutions generated in zinc hydrometallurgy using a strong airflow device was investigated. The influence of oxygen flow, copper ion concentration, temperature and reaction time on iron precipitation as goethite was studied. The optimum conditions were: oxygen flow 0.2-0.35m3/h, copper ion concentration 0.25-0.5g/L, temperature 80-90oC, zinc oxide powder neutralizing agent and a reaction time of5to 7hours. Under the optimal conditions, the Fe2+concentration was reduced to 0.025g/L after iron precipitation, and the goethite residue contained 38.7wt.%Fe. The SEM and XRD analyses showed that the iron was present as well formed FeOOH crystals in the iron residue, and the amount of iron sulphate was very low. Production practice shows that, when the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 11.61g/L and 4.08g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 1,439kg/day. When the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 14.51g/L and 2.73g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 2,454kg/day. This represents a ~70 percent increase in iron removal.INTRODUCTIONThe objective of iron removal is to produce a small volume of iron residue, and our industrial goethite process meets this requirement. The high Fe(II) solution in our reactor isoxidized/hydrolyzed to precipitate goethite and the precipitate is sent to a pyro metallurgical furnace for final residue treatment. Some literature discusses (DengYong-guiet al., 2008;Meiguang-guiet al., 2001;Zhongzhu-qianet al., 1980) research on iron hydrolysis; one of the reported rate limiting parameters was the low availability of the oxidant when using air and another was the inhomogeneous air distribution. There are two iron hydrolysis-goethite precipitation methods; the Electrolytic Zinc process (EZ) and the Vieille Montagne process (VM) (Lei Xiang, 2006; Xuguo-qiang, 2007;ZhaoYonget al.,2005). The EZ method hydrolyzes the Fe3+directly to FeOOH. The weakness of the EZ process is the low recovery rate of the associated minor metals. The VM method reduces the iron to the ferrous state and then oxidizes the Fe(II)to Fe(III),with simultaneous hydrolysis/precipitation of the Fe(III) as FeOOH. Before iron hydrolysis, the minor metals, such as indium, could be selectively precipitated, because Fe(II)requires a high pH for hydrolysis. A monolithic caisson is one of the major structural components commonly used in the construction of docks, breakwaters, and container terminal quay walls. Since the structure of monolithic caissons is typical and somewhat simple, its design process is also typical and repetitive, but still time consuming. To reduce the total time and enhance productivity, we developed a parametric model in Revit to automatically generate a 3D model of a monolithic caisson. It is designed to generate the Revit model of a caisson with concrete body and reinforcing bars. The size of caisson, the number of reinforcing bars, and the space between reinforcing bars are automatically changed when users update parameters. This paper presents how we developed this parametric family in Revit for monolithic caisson design and how it would enhance its design process.

Industrial plants located in the province of Quebec, Canada, are subjected to large variations of the ambient air temperature, Building ventilation systems of these plants must have some flexibility in order to meet industrial hygiene standards (TLV for chemical substances, heat stress and cold stress) at any time of the year, The building ventilation of a bath treatment plant of an aluminium smelter in Quebec was examined under summer and winter conditions, Part of the plant has periodic emissions of hydrogen fluoride gas and heat from hot anode butts, CFD modeling was used to optimise the building ventilation of the bath treatment plant, The present study proposes a modified building ventilation system, which improves the internal environment, complies with industrial hygiene standards and also reduces heating costs by 20 % during winter.

"In order to determine the in-situ shear strength of rock joints, large scale testing is required. However, this is both expensive and difficult to execute. One possible method to overcome this may be to use photogrammetry to capture large joint surface roughness in-situ and downscale it to replica samples, which could be sheared in laboratory. In this paper, as a first part in such a method, a technique to digitize surface roughness and to produce replica samples for laboratory shear testing from a larger joint sample are presented. First, a thin granitic rock slice with dimensions of 1.75 m x 0.95 m of granitic intact rock was chosen for the study. The joint surface is fresh and created through tensile induced splitting. The large joint sample is digitized using photogrammetry. Then, one fullscale 1.7 m x 0.6 m geometry is cropped from the digitized joint geometry and then subsamples at 10x, 7.5x, 5x, 2.5x and 1x scales. All sub-geometries are scaled down digitally to produce 0.17 m by 0.06 m geometries. The geometries are used to make casting molds both positive and negative to produce samples with perfect matedness. The casting molds are 3D printed in polylactic acid plastic and C60/75 concrete is cast to produce a replica series. In addition to the creation of this replica series, two pilot replicas are also tested using a portable shear box with a 0.5 MPa normal pressure. The results from the pilot rounds are presented and discussed. Finally, suggestions for future research are given.INTRODUCTIONThe rock mass strength is in many cases controlled by the shear strength of rock joints, especially in hard rock masses. The shear strength is generally found to be influenced by several parameters, including normal stress, the basic friction angle of the intact rock, the joint surface roughness, the joint wall compressive strength, the matedness of the joint surfaces, weathering and infilling. The effect of these parameters for the joint shear strength can be evaluated in laboratory scale. However, the shear strength is known to be scale dependent. How the scale effect influences the strength is not fully understood. The general consensus is that the shear strength decreases when sample size increases, i.e. a negative scale effect (Bandis et al. 1981). However, some studies have presented contradictory results, see for example Hencher et al. (1993) and Kutter & Otto (1990). The extent and nature of the scale effect is still a question of debate (Tatone & Grasselli 2013)."

The curve of coal production in Nova Scotia over the past forty years shows a definite maximum reached in 1913. Continued production to this maximum will require a greater tonnage per man-day, and this means there cannot be any increase in total man power used in the operations. There are still large reserves of coal but much of it will require washing or beneficiating to make a usable product. By-product recovery based on the present product ion is relatively satisfactory. Further development of secondary industries requires adequate markets for the bulk materials produced by the processing. It also requires access to other raw materials as well as markets for the principal product of the operations. Scientific investigation and research are needed to prove the quantity and value of lower grade or poorer quality coals, and methods for their recovery and utilization. Economics of further processing of present and future production must be investigated beforehand, if a successful development is to be assured. Such development cannot be expected largely to replace present markets. Production of coal for genera l use must continue to form the major function of the coal industry of the Province. Costs per ton must decrease, or subsidies or other assistance must increase, if the industry is to survive. Costs of investigation and research and costs of capital outlay for further development muse be met.

Since 1978, Syncrude Canada Ltd. has been expanding steadily its oil sand mining and processing capacity while reducing unit energy requirements. At the current rate of ~180 M tonne/year oil sand, the originally adopted Karl Clark?s 80°C version of the Hot Water process would require some 53 PJ (53 x 1015 Joule) heat. If this amount of heat were to be derived from burning natural gas it would cost $369 M/y (at $7/GJ). Fortunately, effective recovery of waste heat from the upgrading operations at the Mildred Lake site obviated the need for water heating with natural gas. The oil sand hydrotransport technology, first utilized commercially in the mid-nineties at Syncrude?s North Mine, reduced slurry temperature from ~80°C to ~50°C, cutting the unit heat requirement from 293 MJ/tonne to 183 MJ/t. However, in the new 100 Mt/year Aurora Mine even a 50°C process temperature would still require 18 PJ of heat energy per year. Only limited quantity of 65°C water could be imported from Mildred Lake site and some waste heat would be available from Gas Turbine Generators. A new, Low Energy Extraction (LEE) process was developed to minimize heat requirements by further reducing process temperatures to 25°C in the slurry pipeline and 35°C in the Primary Separation Vessels (PSV). Unfortunately, when applied to certain ore facies in Aurora, the LEE process yielded disappointing bitumen recoveries, necessitating an increase in slurry temperatures from 25°C to 35°C in the pipeline and from 35°C to 42°C in Primary Separation. In 2004, an Optimized Low Energy process (OLE) was developed and piloted at Syncrude Research using a 2000 kg/hour pilot plant. In the OLE process, most available heat is applied up-front to produce 45°C pipeline slurry at a density of 1.58 kg/l. Once the pipeline conditioning process is completed, the slurry is flooded with cold (10°C) water, resulting in PSV temperature of 34°C. The overall heat and water requirements are the same, or slightly lower, compared to those of the LEE process ? but without the penalty in bitumen recovery. Processing 100 Mt oil sand at 34°C (96 MJ/t), rather than at 50°C (183 MJ/t), will save $61 M/y (@ $7/GJ) and reduce green house gas emissions by ~47 %. The OLE process is currently being implemented at the Syncrude Aurora Mine.

The extraction of nickel from Serbian and Western Australian lateritic ore by sulphuric pressure acid leaching (PAL) has been studied. The following parameters were tested: stirring rate, acid to ore ratio, reaction time, pressure and temperature. These studies were performed with ore samples from the Rudjinci, Serbia and Silcrete, Australia, both belonging to the laterite-silicate group of deposits. An increase of the reaction temperature and the stirring speed at a fixed acid/ore ratio showed a positive influence on nickel extraction. The decrease of the oxidation potential with time correlated with the increase in Fe(II) in solution and nickel extraction as the reaction went to completion for both ores. The target values of 95 % Ni extraction and 60 % Co extraction were attained in 5 min at 250°C for the Serbian silicate ore, at an agitation rate of 1500 rpm, 10 % solids, and acid/ore ratio of 0.40. Under similar conditions only 60 % Ni, but 69 % Co could be extracted from the Australian Silcrcte ore due to different mineralogy. The nickel extraction was shown follow a diffusion-controlled reaction model.

OZ Minerals owns and operates the Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator in South Australia, built in 2008 and commissioned in early 2009. The concentrator operates via semi autogenous grinding in a thirty four foot ThyssenKrupp Polysius mill followed by a twenty four foot Polysius ball mill in closed circuit with hydro cyclones, designed for an ore throughput of eight million tonnes per annum. The main aspects of designing the circuit are discussed along with the issues faced in the early stages of operation. A review of the optimization strategy applied to the milling circuit such as cyclone optimization, advanced process control strategy implementation and reline management to improve availability is then discussed highlighting areas of significant process improvement that have seen the plant exceed nameplate throughputs above nine million tonnes per annum.
