This paper examines 5 years of SAGDesign testing data with particular emphasis on the grinding test results from two recent projects, the Fortune Minerals Limited NICO project, and the Aurora Energy Resources Inc., Michelin deposits, located in the Northwest Territories and in Labrador respectively. The context is to compare these results with the SAGDesign database. The required SAG mill pinion energy for these two ores showed vast differences, even though both ores had similar average Bond Ball Mill Work Index values - about 13 kWh/t each for the two deposits respectively. Bond Rod Mill Work Index values for NICO ranged up to 19.7 kWh/t for the hardest ore, confirming the harder nature of the coarse material. SAG mill pinion energy to grind the NICO cobalt-gold-bismuth-copper ore from F80 152 mm to T80 1.7mm varied from 16 to 35 kWh/t, while for Michelin uranium ore, it varied from 2 to 9 kWh/t. NICO ore is harder than any other material encountered to date using SAGDesign testing. SAG pinion energy is more than double the ball mill pinion energy using a transfer size T80 of 1.7mm and a final grind P80 of 74 microns. For NICO, the ore is ?off the charts? for simulation design techniques because there is no comparable operating SAG mill treating ore that is this macro-competent. For Aurora, the relationship between SAG and ball mill pinion energy is reversed in that the SAG mill requires less than half of the ball mill pinion energy using a transfer size T80 of 1.7mm and a final grind P80 of 90?. Because these discoveries are so important for grinding mill design, their impact will be dealt with in future papers, at the August METSOC Conference in Sudbury, and at the September SME Workshop in Tucson. It has now been concluded that the ratio of SAG pinion energy to Bond Ball Mill Work Index, is valuable data to use in designing a SAG/ball mill grinding circuit, to help choose the power split needed.

"Mg alloys are extensively used as light structural materials in modern industry. Mn and RE (rareearth) metals are effectively used as alloying elements to enhance the properties of Mg alloys. Therefore, the thermodynamic database of those alloys is important in the Mg alloy design and processing. Critical evaluation and optimization of all available literature data for the Mn-RE systems were conducted to obtain reliable thermodynamic functions. The Mn-RE systems shows systematic changes in the phase diagrams and thermodynamic properties with increasing atomic number in the lanthanide series. This systematic approach for all RE elements allows to resolve inconsistencies in the available experimental data. INTRODUCTIONRare Earth (RE) metals are widely used in many industrial fields including permanent magnet, electronic materials and structural materials. As a small addition of RE can enhance magnetic, electronic, optical and mechanical properties of numerous materials, the usage of the RE is still expanding regardless of the strategic control of their supply.Magnesium alloys are getting great scientific and industrial attention as the lightest structural materials. One of the drawbacks of Mg alloys is their poor formability at room temperature due to the limited slip system with hcp crystal structure. Recently, several studies (Farzadfar et al., 2011; Sandloebes et al., 2010; Stanford, 2010; Stanford et al., 2008; Yan et al., 2010) show that the additions of small amounts of RE can considerably enhance the ductility of Mg alloys. Therefore, a lot of research on Mg-RE alloys is undergoing to clarify the role of RE on the enhanced deformation mechanism and to find out the most optimum Mg alloy compositions. In order to respond to the need of Mg-RE alloy development, a large thermodynamic database for Mg alloys containing RE has been developed with critical systematic analysis and optimization of the entire RE series data. This includes the thermodynamic database of the Mg-RE (Kang et al., 2009), Mg-RE-RE (Kang et al., 2009), Mg-Al-RE (Jin et al., 2011; Jin et al., 2010), Mg-Zn-RE and Mg-Mn-RE systems."

"THE Mine Engineering Department at Gaspe Copper is staffed by a chief engineer, assist-ant engineer, research engineer, chief surveyor, four instrument men, chief bonus clerk, draftsman, and a helper pool of four permanent men plus one or two students in the summer. The men are grouped according to function for organization purposes. Routine services provided by the Mine Engineering Department in-elude ail surface and underground surveying and mapping, preparation of working drawings, compilation of engineering reports, recommendations on ventilation, testing the mine air for carbon monoxide, research on mine equipment and its use, and the calculation of incentive bonus. Demand jobs from departments other than the Mine Department .are done on request. Such jobs may be in the plantsite, the Town of Murdochville, or at the shipping points at Gaspe harbour or the St. Lawrence river."

"This paper presents an overview of the major landslide hazards in open pit mines in China, the currently used landslide control and monitoring techniques, and development of a new slope control technique incorporating the reinforcement, sliding force monitoring, remote sensing and forecasting in one system in order to constrain the displacement of the sliding blocks in the landslide to minimized the influenced area and provide precise warnings timely for the imminent landslides. For implementation of the new technique, a novel rock cable with large deformation and high resistance (also known as HE cable) was developed, which can elongate as long as 2m. At the same time, the necessary and sufficient condition for initiating a landslide and energy balance equations are formulated. Based on the proposed mathematical models and Beidou satellite system, the software and data transmission hardware for remote sensing and forecasting were developed the new landslide control technique has been applied successfully in 245 landslide sites in 12 provinces across China. In this article, two practical application cases in the open pit mines are reported.INTRODUCTIONChina is one of the countries in the world with the most widely distributed landslides and suffering the heaviest damage. According to the incomplete statistics, landslide hazards have caused death of hundreds of people and direct economic losses of several hundred million RMB each year. The landslide hazards have a great impact on the life and property safety of the people, safety of the infrastructure, as well as the social stability. Thus development of new techniques for forecasting and prediction of the landslides is imperative and of great importance. In general, the forecasting and prediction of the landslides consists of three major aspects, i.e. sliding time forecasting, landslide activity intensity forecasting and landslide hazard degree forecasting. Since a considerable part of the landslide-suspected area are adjacent to the residential areas or important infrastructures, development of the advanced landslide control and monitoring techniques to cope with the sliding time forecasting problem is more important.Over the past one hundred years, the most widely used slope monitoring techniques are based on displacement monitoring (Xu, et al. 2007; Toshitaka, 1998). In the early days owing to the limitation of the technology and equipment, the ground surface displacement and underground water level change were inspected mainly by man power for inferring the possibility of a landslide. In recent several decades, more and more ground surface displacement monitoring devices were brought to the market, such as the automatic total station, theodolite, digital level, borehole inclinometer and GPS based instruments, etc. Based on these modern techniques, some advanced instruments have been developed and applied to the landslide monitoring, for example, the “landslides early warning monitoring system” (Leonardo, et al. 2002), the “In-SAR” technique (Reevea, et al. 2000), the GPS and satellite geodetic survey based technique (Reevea, et al. 2000), and real-time telemetry technology (Xu, et al. 2007). These monitoring approaches have made significant contributions to the landslide disaster monitoring and forecasting. The major limitations for the ground surface displacement monitoring techniques are lie in the inconsistence between the displacement in ground surface and that in the sliding surface for the sliding mass, resulting in low degree of forecasting accuracy."

The gemological properties that allow natural emeralds and blue sapphires to be distinguished from other gemstones are summarized in this paper. A variety of synthetic and laboratory-treated emeralds and blue sapphires are also encountered in the jewelry industry today. Gemologists distinguish these latter materials from their natural counterparts based primarily upon features seen with magnification, such as inclusions and/or growth zoning. In some cases, however, these observations and standard gem-testing methods are insufficient, and the use of non-destructive analytical methods, such as optical spectroscopy and chemical analysis, are required for positive identification. The commercial value of synthetic and treated gems are much less, and can be insignificant in comparison to that of an important untreated natural gemstone. Identification of synthetic and treated gem material is essential to maintaining integrity in the jewelry industry. Loss of consumer confidence in the gemstones sold at the jewelry counter could have a negative impact on the exploration and mining of natural emerald and blue sapphire.

The Wallaroo smelter on the Yorke Peninsula, South Australia commenced smelting operations in 1861 treating ores from the nearby Moonta and Kadina mines. The plant expanded and modernized on several occasions and was a leader in the successful introduction of new technology to improve operations. It operated continuously until 1923 when local mines became exhausted; in the closing stages of the 19th century it was the largest copper smelter in the world outside of those in Swansea, Wales. In 1892 a small electrolytic refinery was established at Wallaroo, the first in Australia, based on principles developed by Elkington at Pembrey, Wales in 1869. The Wallaroo refinery was specifically built to recover gold and silver from copper produced by smelting gold-containing feed materials shipped from Western Australia. This first venture into electrolytic refining was replaced in 1903 by a somewhat larger refinery which, although modest in size for its time, with a capacity of about 1000 tonnes of cathode copper per year, was very productive in precious metals. Anode copper was produced by an updated version of the reverberatory-based Welsh process until 1910 when barrel-type pneumatic converters were introduced based on American practice; subsequently, anodes were cast by tapping the precious-metals rich "bottoms" portion of converter copper as produced at about one-fifth into the copper blow. The present paper describes the Wallaroo refinery, its anode supply and products, supported by initial observations on a sample of a Wallaroo cathode held in the collection of the South Australia Museum, Adelaide SA, Australia. INTRODUCTION Australia ranked 6th in the world for copper mine production in 2018, with an output of 918,000 tonnes of mined copper, after Chile, Peru, Congo, China and the USA; about 40% of Australian mined copper was smelted in the country. Interestingly, the world ranking of Australia in mined copper has, with a few variations, remained about the same for more than 100 years – of interest, it was also the 6th largest country for copper production at 21,089 tonnes in 1899. At that time, all or most of the copper was smelted in the country (Mackey, 2016). Copper was first discovered in Australia in 1842 in South Australia not far from Adelaide; additional copper discoveries in the region soon followed. At first, copper ore was shipped to Swansea, Wales for smelting (Bampton, 2003). However, in addition to the long, 150 day one-way sea passage, it seems Welsh smelters preferred higher grade of ores – these aspects and likely a mood in the new colony to be independent of Swansea (Evans, 2014) evidently encouraged local smelting at the mine sites using small, Welsh-type reverberatory furnaces fired with hardwood as fuel and operated by Welsh and Cornish migrants. The first large copper smelter in Australia commenced in 1848 at Bremer, near Callington some 60 km east of Adelaide. With larger discoveries on Yorke Peninsula, the Wallaroo copper smelter at Wallaroo Bay on the west coast of the peninsula commenced operations in 1861 (Bell & McCarthy, 2008). Thus began one of the most successful, and in its day, one of the most advanced and innovative plants in Australia if not the world. There is accepted evidence that multistage fracturing of horizontal wells in shale reservoirs results in significant production variation from perforation cluster to perforation cluster. In fact, only a fraction of the perforation clusters seem to contribute to production in many shale gas and shale oil plays. In many cases, the orientation of the lateral section of these wells is determined by lease boundaries rather than principal stress directions, and these often do not coincide. When horizontal wells are misaligned from the far-field principal stress directions, the fracture must reorient from the near-wellbore principal stress directions, which are aligned with the wellbore, to the far-field principal stress directions. The primary objective of this study is to learn how various completion designs influence the near-wellbore fracture geometry when such a misalignment exists. A secondary objective is to understand the influence of rock fabric features, such as mineralized natural fractures, on this reorientation process. To understand these effects, eight laboratory hydraulic fracturing tests were conducted using a true triaxial vessel with 914 mm × 762 mm × 762 mm samples of Niobrara shale. Several different completion designs were studied, including the use of fracture initiation slots with several different orientations and the use of perforations selectively located to encourage a smooth transition from the near- to far-wellbore region. The tests were carefully scaled as accurately as possible to provide insight into the field near-wellbore phenomena. Pressure and fluid flux at the wellbore, deformation of the block, acoustic velocity, and induced acoustic emissions were acquired during the tests. Additionally, sized particles were also injected to gauge the fracture width away from the wellbore. After the test, the blocks were dismantled, and the fracture geometry was mapped in 3D. These measurements allow one to clearly differentiate the fracture initiation and the breakdown—meaning the peak pressure—to be clearly differentiated; the fracture was already well developed when the maximum pressure was reached. The study reveals non-negligible tortuosity and aperture restriction in the near-wellbore region. In the field, this would translate to high treating pressures, uneven proppant distribution, and possibly near-wellbore screenouts. The test results show that, of the configurations tested, the best approach is to use deep slots that are aligned with the far-field principal stress directions. The oriented perforation design did not achieve the simple, smooth transition that was hoped for, and instead produced multiple competing near-wellbore fractures and considerable tortuosity. The study also demonstrated that the presence of planes of weakness, such as mineralized natural fractures, near the slot tip can result in poor near-wellbore fracture geometries, even for the best completion configuration. We conclude from these tests that the misalignment of the well with a principal stress direction creates near-wellbore complexity that, in turn, creates uncertainty in proppant distribution and, therefore, production; proppant might avoid up to a half of the created fracture. Regardless of the wellbore orientation, this uncertainty is further increased by the presence of mineralized features in the rock fabric that can strongly alter or stop the growth of the hydraulic fracture. Preventing those effects by changing the completion alone proves difficult, and new strategies are required to ensure a reliable stimulation of shales.

A DESCRIPTION of the block-caving system of mining as practised at the King mine of Asbestos Corporation, Limited, Thetford Mines, Que., was presented. at the Annual Meeting of the Institute held in Quebec city, in April, 1934. The paper was published in the Transactions of the Institute for 1934. There has now been recovered, by this method, one million tons of ore, and a review of experience indicates that the method was well planned and has been executed smoothly. In approaching the problem of selecting the type of mining best adapted to this deposit, the method had to be one which would be low in cost, use no wood, and not disturb the surface immediately bounding the ore-body on two sides. Prior to 1931, block-caving had been considered but rejected, as it en-tailed disturbance of the surface area which lay within a 45° angle of the lowest contemplated workings, if the practice of such mines as Ray, Miami, Inspiration, and Morency, where this type of mining has been used extensively, was followed. At these properties there have been mined large tannages at outstanding low costs, but an extensive surface area has been disturbed in each case. In some instances, townsites in the mining area have had to be abandoned, and dwellings, not considered worth moving, have been allowed to fall into the depression. A study was made of the principles involved in the various types of block-caving, the existing information on ground movement, subsidence, etc., also being carefully analysed. Toward the end of 1931, a plan was conceived whereby the country adjoining ground being caved might be held permanently in place and undisturbed. The success of such a scheme was essential to the application of block-caving at the King mine on account of property boundaries, the Quebec Central Railway right-of-way, and expense of moving buildings. Study of existing data on caving and movement of rock, caused by sub-surface excavations of sufficient unsupported area to result in failure of the backs, indicated, in practically every instance, that such movements followed certain definite laws of mechanics.

"Virtual reality, a 3D computer-generated environment, has become a recognized delivery system for many forms of education. This paper describes the application of virtual reality to mineral processing education. An interactive mineral processing visualization module developed at the University of New South Wales, Australia, provides users with an overview of a base-metal concentrator and details about how the mined ore progresses through stages in processing. The module also involves developing instructional based plant layouts and flowsheets in the virtual environment. A graphical method has been developed for the evaluation of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Act Noise Exposure Index and the Equivalent Continuous Sound Level. The method makes use of a noise survey form and a mechanical integrator with two sliders, and is less tedious and susceptible to error than alternative methods. The graphical method is adaptable to various codes for noise exposure and may be used with any instrument that measures noise level. One example of its application to a practical situation in a Canadian mine is given to demonstrate the procedure .

Some Safety Measures at Ontario Mines The following safety precautions have of late been taken by several of the Ontario mines: installation of water crossovers; washing clown of faces to show-up missed holes; insistence on gloves being worn as a protection to men's hands; wearing of safety boots and hats by underground men; and wearing of goggles by all men using hammers, starting holes, etc. In the summer of 1924 the Mclntyre mine began experimenting with means of removing powder smoke from headings by installing fans and pipe-lines of various designs, also with different means of introducing water into the air-blast when blowing smoke. By October of that year they had devised a scheme of water connection between the water and the air line, at a distance of about one hundred and fifty feet back from the face, using two valves and a short hose. By this means a limited amount of water could be introduced into the air which blew into the face, resulting in a fine spray of air and water combined. This spray not only helped to eliminate fumes but also introduced fine particles of water into the air, raising it above the dew point, with the result that when these fine particles of water settled they had attached to them fine dust particles, thus eliminating, to a great extent, the injurious dust caused by blasting. The combined air and water is turned on immediately after blasting and allowed to blow continuously for from four to five hours, until the muckers come on shift.

Mining firms are widely criticised for their adverse impacts on the environment. At the same time many firms in the industry devote extensive resources, both financial and managerial, to the reduction or elimination such impacts. Very considerable improvements have been made, although these are sometimes overshadowed by a few high-profile accidents, such as the occasional collapse of a cyanide-containing tailings dam. In parallel, much effort is also directed at projecting a positive environmental image, as witnessed by extensive environmental reporting, both on paper and increasingly through web-platforms. Mining projects today almost invariably involve some form of environmental protection. In industrial countries regulations in this area are extremely stringent, as is enforcement. In less well developed countries, regulation and enforcement may be weaker, but firms are in many cases and for a number of reasons committing themselves to high levels of environmental protection, even if they might get away without doing so. Research in the area of environmental performance of mining firms has so far paid much attention to concepts such as sustainability indicators and the sustainability of individual firms. Given the still raging debates about the appropriate way to determine the degree to which any given firm is sustainable (Welford 1995) as well as the usefulness of what will in the final analysis be a value judgement, anyone on the sidelines of the debate will come back to the fundamental issue, how is knowledge that a particular firm has been judged ?sustainable? going to be made use of. This issue remains unresolved, which may explain the lack of progress in formulating a useful definition of a sustainable firm The question addressed in this paper is not so much about what firms are doing on the ground or in any particular case of environmental protection, but more in the subsequent use of these efforts - and by extension - on the overall direction of corporate environmental strategy. The fundamental problem facing all mining firms is that they cannot easily benefit from unilaterally reducing their environmental impact. The firm can of course avoid liability and keep a variety of stakeholders happy and hence experience lower costs of obtaining the [input] resources they need (in a broad sense, not just minerals), but this represents only part of the opportunities available form pursuing an environmental strategy (Reinhardt 2000). The other part, which may have an enormous potential, involves the concepts of competitor management and product differentiation. The logic of keeping stakeholders happy has been most forcefully argued by Pfeffer and Salanchick (1978) who link the behaviour of firms in all domains to their ability to obtain the resources they need, at a cost that is lower than it would otherwise be (Pfeffer & Salanccik 1978). Several varieties of strategy can be included under this heading, including cost reduction and risk management. The alternative logic is to convince customers that they want to pay more for minerals supplied by mining firm X or directly attributable to mine Y, or by making all mineral users pay more. These two strategies, which may be referred to as product differentiation and competitor management, respectively (Reinhardt 2000) are related to the demand side of mineral supply, whereas cost reduction and risk management are related to the supply side. IT is the purpose of this essay to give a reasonably complete description of shaft sinking under a rock pentice in a small Northern Ontario gold property. Hallnor is in many ways an exceptional mine, but the sinking operations here described are but typical examples of the excellent practice for which Canadian mines and mining engineers are justly famous the world over. The worth of the subject lies, therefore, nor in its originality, but in its soundness; not in the spectacular, but in the economical and safe. Attention is particularly drawn to the excellent safety record and to the exceptionally low overall sinking cost. INTRODUCTION Prior to April, 1939, the Hallnor No. 1 shaft had been sunk vertically to a depth of 997 feet below the surface. It is a three-compartment shaft, 19 ft. 10 in. by 7ft. 7 in. outside the timbers (see Figure 1).

MR. A. F. B. Norwood: Having been associated in the past few years with nine different plants roasting aurif erous concentrates in Australia, two of which were new installations for which design and construction were undertaken by the writer, I read Mr. Archibald's paper with very great interest, and I deem it a great privilege, as a member of a sister Institution, to be invited to contribute to the discussion on the paper. I wish to congratulate the author on a very informative and interesting paper, and, although situated many thousands of miles away, I feel I have gathered from it a very close idea of the operating conditions and of the work that has been carried on at the Beattie gold mine. Working along somewhat different lines, it is interesting to note that the conclusions drawn by the author run closely parallel to those accepted in Western Australia, viz., that the object of roasting is to obtain a porous calcine, and that this can best be achieved by roasting first at a temperature below 900 deg. F. to 1,000 deg. F., and then raising the temperature at the finish of the roast. Turning first to the laboratory work, the materials I have studied in Western Australia cover a range from those with little or no arsenic to concentrates carrying as high ?as 20 per cent, i.e., even higher than in the analysis quoted for the eoncentrates from Nepheline Products, Limited. In the ease of arsenic-free pyrite concentrates, the roast is ideally carried out at a temperature ranging from 900 deg. F. to 1,000 ferric oxide is one cause of the refractory gold remaining In deg. F. No improvement in extraction is obtained when the calcines are cyanided by raising the final temperature above this point; nevertheless, in technical practice it is desirable to finish the roast at 1,200 deg. F. in order to decompose basic ferric sulphate and thereby reduce the consumption of chemicals in the subsequent cyanidation step. However, if at any stage of the roast the temperature is raised above 1,200 deg. F., the extraction by cyanidation falls, and continues to do so the higher the maximum temperature that is reached. "The adoption of tailored-rolled or tailor-welded blanks (i.e. TRB/TWB) in the automotive industry has been known to offer great potential for the optimization of weight, function, cost and complexity. Vehicle light weighting can further be achieved by using high strength aluminum alloys like the 7xxx-series. 7xxx-series alloys are capable of delivering specific strengths equal to or greater than high strength steels. However, room temperature formability of this aluminum class is limited, so one approach to forming 7xxx-series alloys is by hot stamping. Hot stamping utilizes an elevated temperature blank and the high pressure stamping contact of the forming die to simultaneously quench and form the sheet. This paper explores the initial feasibility of tailored thickness material for body-in-white applications when processed under hot stamping conditions.INTRODUCTION Steel tailor-rolled blanks (TRB) or tailor-welded blanks (TWB) have been used within the automotive industry as a method of reducing weight, expanding material utilization, and decreasing overall part/assembly cost (Ganeasan et al., 2015; Merklein et al., 2014; Hirt et al., 2005; Kridli et al., 2000). The production of such tailored thickness materials has resulted in over $2.5 billion (2016) in combined industry sales (Mubea, 2018). As automakers begin to adopt the manufacturing practices traditionally reserved for steel such as tailor rolling/welding with greater enthusiasm for vehicle light weighting, there exist an opportunity to expand the material database to extend beyond the traditional aluminum alloys found in current production. High strength aluminum alloys, i.e. 7xxx-series, are ideal for structural automotive applications due to their high specific strength; however, they have limited room temperature formability. Hot stamping, another manufacturing practice used by the steel industry, can be used to form these high strength materials. The combination of tailoring the thickness of a sheet material and hot stamping provides an opportunity for significant weight saving within an existing manufacturing footprint. This paper explores the potential and challenges of this approach when applied to structural body-in-white components. The methods for tailor rolling, tailor welding and hot stamping are described and applied to the production of a 7075 aluminum alloy B-pillar. The results are discussed in terms of feasibility and weight savings."

The Carboniferous system of rocks in the Maritime Provinces include as workable mineral and organic substances, gypsum, anhydrite, salt, coal, building stones, grindstones, limestones, brick-clay shales, fire-clay shales, oil shales, etc. The system is, therefore, pre-eminently of economic value to the provinces in which it occurs, and the more knowledge we may gain concerning it, the more we may be prepared to aid in the development of these useful substances. For this purpose it is not sufficient to state that the ground upon which we stand is underlain by Carboniferous rocks. In-discriminate digging or drilling will not open many new mines of wealth, however difficult it may be to dampen the optimism of gamblers. For mineral wealth has not been scattered in the rocks haphazard, now here, now there, but its distribution has been the result of natural earth forces acting at intervals throughout the countless millions of years that have elapsed since our planet was born. As regards the majority of metalliferous deposits, the earth forces involved have resulted in the penetration of surface or sub-surface rocks by molten rock-matter and associated mineral solutions from deep-seated sources. But the economic Carboniferous deposits that have been mentioned are themselves types of bedded surface rocks rather than immigrant deposits, and their formation and geological history is closely related to that of the rocks with which they are interbedded.

In this work, we explore a novel mineral processing approach using carbon dioxide to promote mineral alterations that lead to improved extractability of nickel from olivine ((Mg,Fe)2SiO4). The precept is that by altering the morphology and the mineralogy of the ore via mineral carbonation, the comminution requirements and the acid consumption during hydrometallurgical processing can be reduced. Furthermore, carbonation pre-treatment can lead to mineral liberation and concentration of metals in physically separable phases. In a first processing step, olivine is fully carbonated at high CO2 partial pressures (35 bar) and optimal temperature (200 °C) with the addition of pH buffering agents. This leads to a powdery product containing high carbonate content. The main products of the carbonation reaction include amorphous colloidal silica, chromium-rich metallic particles, and iron-substituted magnesite ((Mg1- x,Fex)CO3). Carbonated olivine was subsequently leached using an array of inorganic and organic acids to test their leaching efficiency. Compared to leaching from untreated olivine, the percentage of nickel extracted from carbonated olivine by acid leaching was significantly increased. It is anticipated that the mineral carbonation pre-treatment approach may also be applicable to other ultrabasic and lateritic ores.
