"Abstract - Shallow submarine hydrothermal fluids from Paleohori Bay off the Greek Island of Milos have been investigated in detail. The extensive gas and warm (max. 93°C) water vents are enriched in major components such as C1-, Na+, Si, Ca2+, Mn, PO4 3-, NH4 +, K+, Sr2+, H2S and CH4 and depleted in Mg2+, O2 and SO4 2- relative to ambient seawater. Based on zero-Mg calculations, it is deduced that the submarine vent fluids are related to the geothermal reservoir beneath Milos which has a similar chemical composition. Fluid samples from each vent in Paleohori Bay represent a mixture of hydrothermal end-member fluids derived from the upper and deeper geothermal reservoir systems of Milos, a mantle-derived source, a high-chloride fluid resulting from phase separation of geo thermal fluids and a steam-heated CO2-rich meteoric water. Résumé - À l’île de Milos dans la mer d’Égée, des fluides sous-marins hydrothermaux en eau profonde ont été récherchés en détail près de la baie de Paleohori. Les larges émanations de gaz et d’eau chaude (temperature maximale: 93°C) sont enrichies en constituants principaux tels que de Cl-, Na+, Si, Ca2+, Mn, PO4 3-, NH4+, K+, Si, Sr2+, H2S et CH4 et appauvries en Mg2+, O2, SO4 2- comparé à l’eau de mer environnante. Selon le calcul du zéro-Mg, nous en déduisons que les fluides sous-marins hydrothermaux sont dérivés du réservoir géothermal sous l’île de Milos car leur composition chimique est la même. Les prélèvements des fluides de chaque source hydrothermale représentent un mélange de fluides hydrothermaux dérivés des réservoirs géothermaux supérieur et inférieur, d’une source dérivée du manteau, d’un fluide très enrichi en chlorure produit par la séparation des phases et de l’eau météorique enrichie en CO2 et chauffée par la vapeur."

"The role of mixed collectors in enhancing the metallurgical performance of sulphide flotation processes was reviewed in 2008, and later published as an integrated theory by Lotter and Bradshaw, 2009. The theory proposed that xanthates, dithiophosphates and dithiocarbamates could be synergistically combined in an optimal formula to deliver improved grade and recovery. The approach uses a five-step structure, viz.1. A mineralogical study of the ore to be treated, identifying and quantifying the economic minerals (with hosting and association) and gangue species present.2. Selection of candidate collectors from this mineralogical information and from the known pulp conditions of that operation (e.g. Eh, pH).3. Design and execution of a factorial experiment to estimate and test the main effects and interactions, and to model the response surface for an optimum formulation [Box et al., 1978].4. Use of a High-Confidence Flotation Test platform in the factorial to reduce overall errors and allow for clearer observations [Lotter, 1995; Lotter and Fragomeni, 2010].5. Statistical design of a plant scale trial to measure and validate the gains [Napier-Munn, 1995; Lotter et al., 2009]. Eland Platinum, which was commissioned in November 2007, appointed a team to apply this theory to formulate an optimized mixed collector suite for use in the operation. The West Pit ore (UG2 - Normal ore) was sampled at site and brought to Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, Canada, for mineralogical and metallurgical testing in 2008. Microprobe and QEMSCAN measurement characterized the type, grain size and textural association of the discrete Platinum Group Minerals (PGM) present. From the mineralogical data, it was clear that a mixture of dithiocarbamate and two xanthates would be a likely reagent suite selection. A factorially designed set of High-Confidence Flotation Tests studying these was performed, concluding that an optimal suite using certain amounts of these collectors was a viable formulation that would advance the grade and recovery performance at Eland above the standard PIBX by approximately 2.13% 4E PGE. The plant trial, which used a form of the replicated block design after Napier-Munn, 1995, and Lotter et al., 2009, exceeded this estimate with an overall PGE recovery gain of 2.48% (absolute basis) and a concentrate grade gain of 26.4 g/t PGE (absolute basis), as well as reducing chrome in concentrate from 2.04 to 1.62% (absolute basis). These gains proved to be statistically significant using the analysis of variance method, and have validated the theory."

The application of titanium alloys is limited to 550°C due to their poor oxidation resistance. It is known that the addition of niobium decelerates the oxidation of titanium alloys whereas elements like vanadium do not improve titanium’s oxidation resistance. The underlying mechanisms are not yet well understood. In the present study, different binary titanium-niobium and titanium-vanadium alloys as well as commercially pure titanium were investigated. Oxidation experiments were carried out at 800°C up to 288 hours followed by metallographic analyses to study the oxide layer morphology as well as the microstructure at the interface. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mappings were used to identify possible changes in the distribution of the alloying elements. In addition, micro-focused hard X-ray experiments were performed to layer-wise analyse the phase composition in selected samples. As expected, the niobium containing alloys show a better oxidation performance compared to commercially pure titanium and the titanium-vanadium alloys. The oxide layer consisted of TiO2 and Ti2O3. Depending of the niobium content, a niobium-rich layer developed below the metal-oxide-interface minimising oxygen diffusion into the titanium matrix. Based on these results, the minimal niobium content needed for improved oxidation resistance was identified so that alloys of technical relevance can now be developed.

La zone 1 de la mine Doyon (zone altérée), se situe à l?extrémité sud de la mine et est constituée d?une série de veines étroites à fort pendage et ayant des épontes de très faible résistance. Les épontes supérieure et inférieure ont des valeurs de RQD variant de 0 à 20 lors que les valeurs de RQD de la zone minéralisée se situent entre 20 et 40. Le minerai de la zone 1 s?étend sur environ 300 m de long et sur 900 m de profondeur avec des épaisseurs variant entre 2 et 15 m. Des méthodes de minage long-trous y sont utilisées avec des accès longitudinaux ou transverses selon l?épaisseur de la zone minéralisée. L?exploitation de la zone 1 a débuté en 1991 et plus de 1,7 millions de tonnes auront été extraites à la fin 2008. Plusieurs techniques y ont été testées que ce soit au niveau du développement ou du minage afin d?améliorer la sécurité des travailleurs, de réduire la dilution des chantiers et d?en augmenter la récupération. Différentes modifications ont été apportées aux dimensions et orientations des galeries, aux patrons de forage, aux techniques de sautages, au support de terrain, à la séquence de minage et aux méthodes de remblayage. Flotation collectors for sulfide minerals has been traditionally based on xanthate, thiophosphate, thiophosphinate and thiocarbamate, all derived from sulfur chemistry. Tecflote™ is a new family of patented collectors based on nitrile chemistry which can supplement or replace thiol collectors, depending on the ore types. A steep grade-recovery curve typical of Tecflote™ collectors was observed when using Tecflote™ as the main collector for the rougher and cleaner steps allowing a better recovery compared to current thiol collectors while maintaining the desired grade. Additional recovery increase has also been observed by the addition of scavenger steps using Tecflote™ collector in combination with current thiol-based collector. The selectivity seen in the lab is transferred to full scale trial and is clearly seen in the rough flotation where the increase in the rough concentrate grade of 5% after pumping Tecflote S11 directly into the tank cell. The mechanisms for Tecflote’s selectivity towards sulfides are currently under investigation and will be discussed. Results of TOF-SIMS analysis will be presented, demonstrating the collector’s selective affinity to different mineral surfaces in flotation. INTRODUCTION The history of collectors used today started in 1882 when Zeise first made xanthates. It was first used in flotation in 1925 – Cornelius Keller’s first patent (Fuerstenau, Jameson, Yoon, 2007). Between 1928 and 1930 American Cyanamid filed 7 patents for dithiophosphate, including flotation and chemical synthesis of the reagent, the first of which was filed by Christmann in 1928 (Christmann, 1933). Synthesize of thionocarbamates for mineral flotation was filed in 1954, by Dow Chemical Company (Harris, 1954). Now that the head grades have been declining over the last decades the need to find more selective collectors to extract difficult and complex ores has pushed the industry to look at different chemistries. Thiol collectors standard to the industry rely on the sulfur in the collector molecule to bond to the mineral surface. The electronic property of this group is modified by the adjacent chemical groups, such as additional S, P or N have the effect of changing the selectivity of the collector (Wills & Finch, 2016). In the case of xanthate the length of the hydrophobic group also has an effect on the selectivity with some minerals such that the ethyl xanthate is more selective against pyrite and pyrrhotite than the long chain xanthates (Wills & Finch, 2016).

"Mattagami Lake Mines Ltd operate a zinc-copper mine with an annual output of about 200,000 tons of zinc and 30,000 tons of copper concentrates. Zinc concentrates arc shipped to a company owned smelter in Valleyfield (a distance of 690 miles), for Export to Quebec City and also to Josephtown, Pennsylvania (1,060 miles, Figure 1.)The protection of concentrates in open gondola rail shipments has been a matter of concern since operations commenced. Considerable financial losses did occur at times because of wind erosion. Operating difficulties were also encountered by customers because of excessive moisture accummulation in the concentrates. Test shipments made in 1969 established the magnitude of losses in open cars. The results and subsequent investigations at our mines and elsewhere confirmed that load protection is an economic necessity.Many types of covers were experimented with, more or less successfully. In 1972 we agreed on a joint program with Dupont of Canada Limited. A new type of cover was developed by early 1973. It has been in use since, undergoing several improvements as experience accumulates."

"During the past fifteen years, mines utilizing the block caving method have improved performance and systematically reduced total mining costs.This paper describes improvements in mine design, mine planning, and mine management, including methods enabling the Chilean and international mining industry to ensure cost savings and productivity growth while using the block caving method. These improvements have encouraged the re-evaluation of underground operations at operating and closed open pits, and challenge surface mining applications as the only low-cost mining method. This paper describes a strategy to estimate the optimum open pit to underground transition time during the life of a mine. IntroductionDuring the last fifteen years, block caving mines have experienced huge changes in designs, planning and administration. These changes have permitted operators to drastically reduce costs, improve equipment productivity, and improve overall business performance. As a consequence of this situation, the block/panel caving mining system is challenging actual open pit operations to maximize the net present value (NPV)."

"The last 25 years have seen tremendous economic pressure placed upon the base metal processor. Industry has responded with technological innovations that have contributed to significant reductions in capital and operating costs. Major changes in processing machinery and philosophy are highlighted for the main unit operations of a base metal mill. Changes in our attitudes on what is environmentally acceptable are also discussed.INTRODUCTIONNewton's law of motion paraphrased states that nothing will change unless there is a pressure to do so.Aase metal processing as a primary commodity related industry has been under severe economic pressure over the last 25 years. This has been brought on by over capacity from new operations in the L.D.C. 's, through material substitution in a host of traditional base metal applications and generally reduced world-wide economic activity. In addition to shrinking markets our collective environmental consciousness has raised effluent standards and workplace hygiene and the employee's as well as government's economic expectations of how much ought to be derived from ''nature's riches''.Industry has responded with technological changes which, it was hoped, would counteract the cost squeeze in which it found itself.I would like to briefly enumerate the major changes, as I see them, that have taken place in the main unit operations that form the normal processing chain for base metals.While the following paper will mention several brands of products, I would like to emphasize that these are the ones that I am most familiar with and is not to say that they are the only manufacturers which have contributed to changes. In fact it ls fair to say that all makers of mining and processing equipment have made improvements to their products, to a greater or lesser degree; they have had to, to still he in business in 1986."

Investigations reveal that the throughput difference between a perfect production day and the average is often on the order of 40%, and that bulk solids handling system deficiencies are the largest (>50%) class of lost opportunities. Root causes for underperformance of elements in material handling systems can often be traced back to the detailed design and even study-stage oversights. To reduce or eliminate bulk solids handling problems in an existing system requires an analysis of troublesome handling equipment – for example, a concentrate transfer chute that experiences plugging, poor flow to the furnace, unacceptable dust generation, and spillage. These problems often lead to significant maintenance costs related to downtime and personnel time. Understanding the cause and cost of flow issues is the first step in troubleshooting the problem. Next, measuring the material’s flow properties is critical to providing design data required to develop a comprehensive scientific solution. In the case of a new installation, the design data is required to properly design the system right first time and prevent flow problems from occurring so that the new equipment works correctly from start-up. This paper highlights the cost of material handling problems and discusses the best approach to evaluate material handling system deficiencies. A case study is given of how Anglo American's operation in Barro Alto Brazil enjoyed a 5-month payback from a bulk solid transfer chute debottleneck project. INTRODUCTION When operating a plant or designing a greenfield or brownfield operation, the intent is to have perfect production days (PPD) each and every day. Money is made by moving material through the plant in a controlled manner to produce the desired product. Mining operations and copper concentration processes are at the most basic level a practice in bulk solids handling (BSH). Unfortunately, many of the project planning steps are overlooked, particularly related to BSH. Investigations reveal that the throughput difference between a PPD and the actual average is often on the order of 40%, and that BSH system deficiencies are the largest (>50%) class of lost opportunities (Wellwood, 2017). Root causes for underperformance of elements in material handling systems can often be traced back to the detailed design and even study-stage oversights. BSH issues are essentially baked into the fabricated plant and left to operations to accept the deficiencies and deal with them for the life of the mine. These deficiencies then become part of the normal operation of the mine and plant.

INTRODUCTION THE present study, based largely upon phase equilibrium diagrams and other theoretical considerations but nevertheless addressed primarily to the practical metallurgist, has been undertaken with a view to discovering what light can be thrown upon the role of alumina in slags. According to Liddell (23), "alumina apparently acts as .a base if much silica is present, as an acid if the silica is low, always as a nuisance." Newton and Wilson (26) state that .alumina "is never added intentionally, as it makes the slag viscous, and is generally an undesirable constituent of slags". Camp and Francis (3) sum up their views by saying, "alumina is seldom used intentionally as a flux, but it is present in nearly all raw material, hence unavoidable". One has only to read The Function of Alumina in Slags, by Henrich (I3), and the very extensive discussion that followed the presentation of his paper, to realize that, before the days of phase equilibrium diagrams, it was a very serious question indeed as to whether alumina should be calculated as a basic, acid, or neutral constituent. Opinions then differed widely, as well they might; today, even though no categorical answer can be given to the question raised, the function of alumina can be at least partly clarified by a study of the fundamental work done by the Geophysical Laboratory in Washington and by certain universities in both America and Europe. It will be a source of gratification to Canadian metallurgists and ceramists to know that work of this type is now under way in the recently organized Physical and Crystal Chemistry Section of the Mines Branch, Ottawa, and that results of practical value have in fact already been obtained.

"Permanent magnets have been applied extensively to several electronic products such as printers, TV sets, microphones, microcomputers and headphones, presently manufactured in large scale by industrial economies. Sm-Co alloys represent about 20% of the world market for permanent magnets and their industrial processors generate 20-30% of magnetic scraps which can be recycled. This paper discusses a process route to recycle SmCo5 using acid treatment, solvent extraction of Sm and electrowinning of Co. The results confirm the feasibility of the alternative proposed. Basic operational variables are suggested as guidelines to design a plant for recycling magnetic scraps.The use of hydrometallurgical processes to recycle scraps from the industry of permanent magnets has been suggested in some recent papers related to recycling of metallic alloys [ 1 ]. These research efforts might be understood as a worldwide tendency towards the development of self sustainable metallurgical processes which mean the reduction of environmental impacts.CETEM -Center for Mineral Technology leads in Brazil several research programs concerning recycling and treatment of industrial residues. The work on samarium purification and concentration by solvent extraction, producing also a solution of cobalt sulfate as partially reported here is one of these programs. Previous results related to the sulfuric acid digestion of SmCo5 are presented somewhere else [2]"

Major-element data for unaltered, unmineralized felsic host rocks from a number of stratigraphically simple, massive volcanogenic Zn-Cu(-Pb) sulphide deposits of low metamorphic grade have been compiled. The petrochemical affinities of these host rocks have been determined (by standard means and by discriminant analysis) and compared. This comparison indicates that volcanogenic deposits in felsic terrains are not restricted to the classical calc-alkaline rock association as previously thought, but can actually be hosted by rocks showing a range of iron content. There is a positive correlation between differentiation trend and are tenor. Zn-Cu ores usually have iron-rich felsic hosts (most Canadian Shield deposits); Pb-Zn -Cu ores have iron-poor felsic hosts (Japanese, Iberian and Tasmanian deposits). This parallels the antipathetic relationship between iron content and background lead levels evident in young, unmineralized, island arcs as well as in many older belts. Correlations between differentiation trend on one hand and massive ore mineralogy and the relative proportions of various rock type (including rhyolite, quartz-porphyry and coarse pyroclastic rocks) on the other are also evident. It is concluded that the recognition of a calc-alkaline differentiation trend cannot be used as a prospecting guide, as has previously been proposed. However, in view of the above correlations, the recognition of a given trend may aid in the formulation of an effective exploration philosophy.

"The Cresson gold deposit is located in the Cripple Creek district of Colorado. The deposit is composed of volcanic intrusive rocks and volcanogenic sediments where gold mineralization is associated with veins and cavities within a diatremal breccia.The purpose of the current study was to:1. Determine the penetration potential of the Cripple Creek Breccia.2. Assess the relationship between penetration and gold recovery within the Breccia.Two methods were applied using a cyanide solution containing ultraviolet sensitive dye to elucidate pathways of penetration within the rock. The first involved stagnant soaking of twoinch square pieces within the solution. The second method involved column leaching of ~100kg of Breccia crushed to P80 12.7 mm (0.5 inch). Samples were selected at specified intervals to capture the penetration progress of the solution. Photomicrographs and image analysis were utilized to illustrate and quantify the degree of penetration.Results indicated that the maximum penetration for the Cripple Creek Breccia (85 to 97%) due to a porous and permeable groundmass, containing large non-porous lapilli fragments. In addition, ~90% of leachable gold was recovered with only ~50% rock penetration.INTRODUCTIONDye penetration studies were first developed at SGS-Lakefield Research for the purpose of determining the fluid penetration amenability of differing rock types. The method was to place a large rock or drill core in a pan with 1 to 2 inches of a pre-mixed, water based fluorescent dye. The sample was sequentially cut after prescribed time periods to reveal a fresh surface. The cut surface was photographed under long wave ultraviolet light, and the same piece returned to the dye and allowed to sit until the next prescribed cutting."

"A kinematically admissible velocity field is applied to study the arching phenomenon in a cohesionless granular backfill placed between two rough vertical inflexible walls. The study is different from the previous works which are almost entirely based on statically admissible stress fields. It is shown that the development of arches is strongly influenced by the previous loading history of the backfill which controls the nature of the constitutive laws that govern the mode of stress deformation of the backfill. This preliminary study employs simple models in order to show the potential use of such an approach in evaluating and understanding mine backfill behaviour in the underground excavation. The pressure exerted on the floor supporting the backfill is also studied in some detail.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the importance of the design of mine backfill has been discussed extensively by a number of authors, i.e. Hassani et al. (1985), such theories have not as yet been incorporated in design criteria for underground mine backfilling operation . One factor that such theories must incorporate is the so-called arching action .The phenomenon of arching has been the subject of study by many researchers in the field of civil engineering and mining engineering. Among these scholars the works of Terzaghi (1943), Krynine (1945), Lusher and Hoeg (1964) and Handy (1985) are noteworthy. All these authors use a statically admissible stress field as a starting point to develop their theories. The approach taken by the authors of the present paper is completely different because they employ a kinematicallyadmissible velocity field. It is their belief that the arching phenomenon is closely linked to the interlocking of grains as manifested by the degree of dilatation of the granular mass when subjected to a shearing process.This paper is written in the following sequence. To define the interlocking quantitatively it is necessary to state the constitutive law governing the stress deformation characateristics of the granular mass. This is done in the next section as the law proposed by Poorooshasb and Pietruszazck (1985, 1986) is stated and simplified to suit the present analysis. Next the mode of formation of an arch in a simple system consisting of a mass of backfill sandwiched between two vertical rough walls of infinite extent is examined. The velocity field obtained from the above example is used to obtain solutions to two more complicated situations. The first situation assumes that the backfill is supported, in addition to the vertical rough walls, by a Winkler foundation at its base. The second situation assumes that the Winkler foundation has been replaced by a horizontal beam of uniform section and simply supported at its extremities. The findings of the study are summarized and their practical implications discussed in the concluding remarks."

"It is projected that the reactivity of acid generating tailings and waste rock can be minimized by reducing the access of oxygen by placing these materials under water in natural or manmade lakes. A project under the MEND and B.C. AMO Task Forces has been in progress for four years to evaluate active and historic tailing sites in B.C. and Manitoba. The sophisticated geochemistry studies conducted on the interstitial pore water has illustrated encouraging results which are discussed. The additional studies which are needed to complete the scientific database for the study sites, for achieving regulatory and public approval and for the engineering of application of this method of control are outlined.IntroductionWorld wide research effort is in progress to find the solution to the acid mine drainage problem. A great deal is known about acid mine drainage but much work is required to find economic and effective approaches to the problem. Two coordinated programs have been initiated recently in Canada: the National Mine Environment Neutral Drainage (MEND) program and the British Columbia Acid Drainage Task Force.Disposal of tailings materials under a water barrier such as a natural lake, is thought to be one solution to prevent acid generation by preventing oxygen and bacterial action on the sulphide surfaces. The deposition of reactive tailings materials under water in natural lakes has been used historically at various mines in Canada. However, there has never been a thorough review of the long and short term impacts of historic sites which may provide crucial information to understand the physical, chemical and biological processes which are taking place.This paper provides a general overview of a series of studies which examine the general biophysical characteristics and the sediment geochemistry of four lakes where subaqueous disposal has been or is currently being used for acid generating tailings. The subaqueous disposal studies have been conducted from 1989 through 1991 and were initiated and supported by both research task forces. The objectives of this paper are to summarize the history and the background information of the studies conducted, the general results obtained from each lake, an overview of the major collective results and the additional work which is required to achieve the final objective of developing criteria for applying this technology in the industry."

"Analysis of gold placer data from gold placers throughout the world suggests that gold grades and volumes cannot be used to distinguish between most types of gold placers. Only the alluvial plain and fan placers are significantly different among the types of gold placers considered. Gold grades and volumes change when working gold placers go from small-volume methods to large-volume methods. The small-volume methods are either of the surface or subsurface (drift mining) type. The odds that a gold placer will be dominantly worked using small volume methods at the surface are about 5:3. Once small volume mining has occurred, the odds against subsequent large-volume mining are about 4:1. If a placer deposit is suitable for large-volume mining, and the amount of gold produced from small-volume mining was reported, an estimate of the remaining gold (log10kg) can be made using the following equation:The relationship shown by this equation suggests that very large gold placers have over half their total gold content in the rich gravels appropriate for small-volume mining. These relationships in conjunction with other data and computer simulation can be used to estimate placer gold resources for an area targeted for mineral resource assessment. IntroductionGold placers have been an important source of gold throughout man's history and may have been one of the first sources-dating back to around 6000 B.C. (Gregory, 1980). From the primitive basket to the modern floating dredge, a variety of methods have been used to work gold placers. Placers are found in a wide spectrum of geologic and climatic settings. "Increasing demand for timely and accurate information about flotation plant performance requires metal accountants to increase the scope and reporting frequency of plant production. This trend has brought in-process inventory estimation at the forefront of metal accounting issues. Such significant in-process inventories can be locked in diverse process equipment (bins, holding tanks, flotation cells, thickeners, pipeline, etc.) or in stockpiles (ore, concentrates, tailings, etc.). Practice has shown that boldly ignoring these in-process inventories or the errors associated with their estimation lead to unreliable metal balances thereby creating confusion in plant production planning and operational performance assessment. To this extent, the characteristics (physical bounds, spatial heterogeneity and residence time) as well as the available measurements (volume, density, humidity, mass, composition, etc.) of each unit/section found in a generic flotation plant are jointly reviewed with respect to the particular metal accounting issues they present. The daily and monthly metal accounting tasks are then reviewed together with possible methods for obtaining reliable inventory estimates including different procedures for end-of month reconciliation.INTRODUCTION Most of the cost reduction initiatives of the mining industry aim at improving capital efficiency and asset utilization. Among the possible paths through which these goals can be achieved are mine-to-metal optimization, real-time plantwide process control (Hodouin, 2011) and knowledge sharing databases (Bascur & Linares, 2006). However, the successful implementation and subsequent monitoring will ineluctably results in an increased demand for timely and accurate information. This more than often requires metal accountants to increase the scope and reporting frequency of plant metal production. A striking example of such scope expansion is the Minas-Rio iron ore project in Brazil (Anglo American, 2013) having a pipeline route of 525 km between the concentrator and the concentrate shipping area. Several other mining companies have also set an increased frequency for their key performance indicators thereby shrinking the metal accounting period from monthly to weekly and daily. Those concurrent trends have brought in-process inventory estimation at the forefront of metal accounting issues. Indeed, as illustrated in Figure 1, improving trading reactivity requires improvements in production planning which strongly impacts the requirements for reliable metallurgical accounting. Furthermore, practice has shown that boldly ignoring significant in-process inventories or the errors associated with their estimation can lead to unreliable metal balances. In other words, since metal balances are the cornerstones of metal accounting, some of the risks associated with important business decisions are linked to errors associated with in-process inventory measurements."

Nickel laterite deposits are typically formed from tropically weathered mafic-ultramafic complexes. The resulting nickel concentration is found within soil horizons and is mineable with regular dozer units. At the time of mining, digging elevations are needed at selective mining units (SMUs). Moreover, for mine planning, the costs due to dilution and lost ore require mining elevations to be specified. A conditional simulation approach is used to calculate ?optimum? SMU mining elevations. Multiple realizations of the ore base surface are simulated. For a single bottom surface realization, dilution and lost ore costs are calculated over the entire vertical extent of each SMU. The optimum mining elevation is the elevation where the lowest summed cost of ?accepting dilution? and ?wasting ore? occurs. The reported SMU dilution is the cost of mining the volume of waste located below the bottom surface and above the optimum mining elevation and the reported SMU lost ore is the cost of not mining the volume of ore above the bottom surface and below the optimum mining elevation. For all ore bottom surface realizations, optimum SMU mining elevations and their associated dilution and lost ore costs are calculated and compiled to represent production uncertainty.
