Synthetic calaverite (Au Tez) has been prepared and its physical properties checked.Simple flotation tests indicate that the recovery of calaverite should be possible using n-butyl or sec-butyl xanthate collectors under approximately pi I neutral conditions with a copper sulphate activator.Roasting calaverite in air at moderate temperatures resulted in its decomposition with the formation of elemental gold and tellurium dioxide.In alkaline oxygenated cyanide solutions, both gold and tellurium tend to dissolve. At pHs less than 14, about 50 per cent of the tellurium remains as elemental tellurium; however in very strongly alkaline solutions, essentially all of the tellurium is converted to the soluble tellurite ion (TeOl-).However, even at high pHs, the solubility of gold in the cyanide solution is still low due almost certainly to passivation effects.

Narrow vein tabular orebodies are prone to mining induced seismicity. The Tasmania Mine is a complex example of a seismically active tabular orebody, where the contrasting material properties of the host strata and of the orebody itself, serve to exacerbate the seismic response. Analysis of a continuous record of seismicity over a period of seven years has provided significant insight into the fundamental mechanics of the rock mass. Understanding seismicity to permit safe extraction of the orebody has been enhanced by instrumentation of rock mass behaviour in response to mining and mining induced seismicity. It is the purpose of this paper to explore that understanding in respect to the adoption of an alternative down-hole Avoca stoping method for use in particular circumstances.Intensive instrumentation of the Tasmania Mine over a period of four years has provided insight into the behaviour of the rock mass in response to extraction of the narrow vein orebody it encompasses. A range of instruments have been installed in clusters or single installations in order to measure changing stress conditions and the impact of those changes on the rock mass and the reinforcement system.Instruments are often installed in very close proximity to active production stoping. While it has been possible to observe the impact of the mining and mining induced seismicity at very close quarters, instruments installed in these locations are vulnerable to damage and consequently, the level of instrumentation is high. Instruments are continuously logged, typically on a six hourly basis coinciding with the end of regular blasting times. The response of the instrumentation to changed rock mass conditions is considered against the background of development and production blasting and against the seismic record to assess the viability of downhole Avoca stoping.CITATION:Hills, P B and Walton, R J, 2012. The design of crawler-mounted conveyor belts installed for the handling of brown coal in open cuts is described.INTRODUCTIONThe State Electricity Commission of Victoria operates two brown coal open cuts at Yallourn, Victoria. The larger of these cuts produces n million tons per year of brown coal containing 67 per cent. moisture, and the smaller, at Yallourn North, produces 1-1 million tons of coal, with a moisture content of 50 per cent. A further open cut at Morwell with projected output of 9-10 million tons per year is in the course of development. In the larger Yallourn open cut coal is excavated by means of conventional bucket chain and bucket wheel dredgers and transport is by electric locomotives and saddle bottom trucks running on 90 cm. gauge railway tracks. At Yallourn North, coal until recently has been largely won by 3i and 5 cu. yd. electric shovels and transported by large diesel-enginedmotor trucks. The difficulty of keeping these trucks in operation during the winter periods owing to the v.ery wet conditions and the high cost of maintenance of these vehicles led to the introduction of a moving face conveyor system.EXISTING CONVEYOR INSTALLATION AT YALLOURN NORTHA conveyor system employing a 36-in. belt running at a speed of 400 ft. per minute and having a nominal capacity of 425 tons per hour with 50-h.p. drive units, was selected as appropriate for the output of the open cut. The investigation of the explosion characteristics of nine Bowen Basin (Central Queensland) dust samples in a suitable coal dust explosion chamber using a new dust concentration probe provides several advances in the area of coal dust explosibility testing. The 20 litre explosion chamber, of novel design, uses rotation of the main body of the chamber together with air jets for dust dispersion, and allows testing of different types of explosion initiators and analysis of the explosion characteristics of coal dust/methane mixtures of varying concentrations.A new development was a dielectric dust probe for the measurement of coal dust concentration. A capacitive micrometry technique was successfully adapted to measure dust concentration. The system uses a ratio-transformer bridge for measurement of small changes in a capacitive probe designed to sample a representative volume. The device is accurate, and is capable of operating in the hostile environment within the explosion chamber.The explosion chamber and dust probe characterise the explosive potential of coal dust samples by determination of the dust lean limit concentration in varying mixture with methane. Plots of lean limit points obtained in this way present an explosion curve for each sample which indicates the potential of the coal dust/methane to explode under the conditions of initiation in the chamber. The explosion curve obtained for each sample presents a unique signature that appears to reflect the physical and chemical characteristics of the dust.The results from this series of laboratory experiments appear to provide a useful index and indicate potential areas of interest for future research.

The Yabulu Nickel Refinery commissioned in 1974, processes lateritic ore via a modified Caron process to produce high quality nickel and cobalt products. The Greenvale orebody provided the sole source of feed to the plant until 1990 and with well-blended mineralogy, it resulted in stable and predictable plant performance, allowing the operating focus to be on reducing energy consumption and increasing ore throughput. This approach provided better economics than pursuing increased reduction efficiency. From 1990, increasing quantities of lateritic ore were imported from Indonesia, Philippines and New Caledonia. This introduced considerable variation in ore blends and instability in plant operation but also provided the opportunity to treat higher grade ore blends which yielded higher reduction efficiencies. Ore reduction is conducted using 12 Herreshoff multiple hearth reduction furnaces, using heavy fuel oil as reductant. The æROASTERÆ Project was approved in November 2000 with the primary objective of improving Nickel reduction efficiency by: Stabilising Roaster Operation via a structured program including focused maintenance efforts, capital equipment upgrades, new process measurements, process re-design and improvements to operating skills and process troubleshooting. A structured technical program including laboratory and plant studies using one plant furnace as a pilot unit to develop improved knowledge of how the reduction process proceeds in the Herreshoff furnace. Armed with this knowledge, optimised process conditions and a reduction process model were developed contributing to a significant demonstrated reduction efficiency improvement. Technical input to the project was provided by QNI with Hatch providing the engineering and project management for the $8.5 M capital work. Execution of the work included extensive consultation with the plant operators and close cooperation between the Hatch project team and QNI operations personnel ensuring installations were completed with minimal production disruption. A strong focus on safety management resulted in a number of brownfields project relevant safety initiatives being implemented resulting in project completion without a serious injury.

Computer software systems have been developed to assist in a wide range of specific mine planning and scheduling applications. In selecting appropriate systems for any mining operation it is apparent that certain features have particular advantages for each mine site. The ideal solution to this problem is to select a range of systems which best relate to sections of each mining operation. This approach raises potential data linking difficulties where output from one system is incompatible with input requirements for other systems. A study at the University of Queensland investigated the problems related to the integration of a number of mine planning and scheduling software systems. The project used data from large scale coal strip mining operations in Central Queensland. Two major computer packages used extensively in the study were the SURPAC mine planning and XPAC mine scheduling systems. Dragline and truck and shovel operations were analysed in the project. Results of the work have been directly applied at the mine site to assist current strip design by effectively automating the design procedure. This enabled sensitivity studies to determine the effects of changing dragline working levels and varying pit dimensions. Coal blending studies and procedures to optimise operations have been investigated using linear programming within a spreadsheet software application. Output from the SURPAC and XPAC programs was directly linked to the linear program for this analysis. The simulation program GPSS/PC was also used in a similar manner to assess optimisation parameters.

The Utah Development Company Research and Development Laboratory has embarked upon a programme of optimisation of the company's coal preparation plants. This goal is being accomplished in a three-fold manner - use of pilot plant equipment for optimisation and modelling of the various unit operations, evaluation or development of on-stream ash analysis for process control, and evaluation or development of alternative processes. In each of these areas, digital data acquisition- and at a later stage, process control feedback, is being extensively utilised, based largely upon the use of the HP85 and HP9915 desktop computers. A variety of input/output configurations such as HPIB, BCD, GPIO are used, and at times supplemented by microprocessors such as the Intel 80/05 to assist in data transfer. This paper will discuss a number of specific projects, especially in relation to the manner in which the variables are monitored, and the data later retrieved and analysed.

The concept of hydro power in deep mines is based on the exploitation of the hydrostatic head that can be gained as refrigerated cooling water descends in shaft pipe columns from the surface, to provide hydraulic power for machines at the working face. This paper describes the work done on two important aspects of the controlled distribu-tion of the high pressure water within a mine, namely the control of pressure under normal operating conditions, and the control of flow in an emergency situation following a pipe breakage. Suitable methods of control have been determined using theoretical techniques to model the steady and unsteady flow behaviour of the water in the pipeline, and taking into consideration the environmental constraints on the types of control devices that can be used. The preferred approach is one in which the high pressure water itself is used as the control medium. The control valves themselves can be fairly conventional in design, but in the case of pipe break protection it is shown that a less conventional approach based on the use of a hydraulic fuse gives improved control performance.

The stratigraphy of the Singleton Coal Measures is reviewed and a revised stratigrapixy which has been ratified by the N.S.W. Standing Committee for Coalfield geology is nominated and defined by a selected type section. Withir the type section the occurrence of repetitive phases are illustrated and described. Coal. Measure units within the Singleton Coal Mean sures, termed the Wollombi and Wittingham Coal Measures respectively, are correlated with the Newcastle and Tomago Coal Measures. In formal nomenclature the Singleton Coal Measures are designated the Singleton Super Group. The major depositional cycles within the Coal Mea- sures are outlined together with those lesser phases within the Coal bearing sequences that influence the mining conditions likely to be encountered. Both tectonic and sedimentary features of the Singleton Coal Measures are considered and the localized post depositional effects on the coal seams and roof strata in- duced by differential, compactions are emphar Sized.

The HYC mineral deposit at McArthur River is about 1.5 kilometres long by 1.0 kilometres wide and 55 metres thick, and contains 227 000 000 tonnes of ore of average grade 9.2% Zn, 4.1% Pb and 41 g/t Ag. Major studies have been carried out continuously since 1955 over the deposit and in the general region. This work is continuing. A small underground mine was developed by driving a decline tunnel to intersect the mineralization 80m below the surface. This provided a fully representative sample of the total deposit unaffected by weathering or oxidation, and was available for the major test program carried out in a pilot plant built to determine the full metallurgical charac- teristics of the ore. The pilot plant operations followed investigations by research institutions, both in Australia and overseas, into the problems of this ultra-fine grained ore. The ultra-fine grained nature of the ore required grinding to an average size of 95% passing 37 micro metres or 400 Tyler mesh. A major feasibility and environmental report was submitted to the government covering all aspects of a development program. The geological, engineering, metal- lurgical, economic, cultural and environmental submissions contained in this report were studied by external consult- ants employed by the government, who agreed with the conclusions that the McArthur HYC deposit is at present Uneconomic.

The Black Star Open Cut is located immediately adjacent to the township of Mt Isa and is situated in the middle of extensive pre-existing infrastructure including two concentrators, two smelters, a wet fill plant and two shafts. At any one time there are in excess of 500 people working on the surface within an industry-accepted 600 m exclusion zone from Black Star blasts. Apart from the surface operations there are also the underground operations including the lead mine (closed in December 2005) and the Enterprise and X-41 mines that must clear for all Black Star blasts. The application of industry standard blasting exclusion zones (600 m) was risk assessed as imposing operationally prohibitive constraints which could cause significant business interruption due to the logistical challenges required to ensure that all personnel from surface plants were evacuated for each blast and potential for lost production whilst these personnel were not operating the plant. In was therefore an imperative for the blast exclusion zone to be reduced. This was achieved by the: use of a QA/QC team to ensure that relevant drill and blast implementation is within an acceptable tolerance (KPIs) from design; use of high-quality stemming material called HMR, which is a by- product of the concentrating process and is generally sized at -14 mm with very little fines; implementation of appropriate training and support to Black StarÆs own blast crews, reinforcing the need to achieve the designed amount of stemming in every hole; and provision of appropriate support from Black StarÆs management for additional resources to ensure that every blast achieves design within the KPIs but especially in high-risk areas. The blast exclusion zone was successfully reduced after monitoring the flyrock results from more than 176 blasts. Black Star Open Cut now maintains a minimum blast exclusion of 200 m in critical areas; however, general blasting currently uses a 250 m exclusion as this provides additional risk management whilst still minimising the logistics associated with clearing and securing the slightly increased area.

Pyrite and Cu-concentrate were roasted in vertically suspended state in an externally heated tube. Tubes of three different lengths of reaction zone were used for three different reaction times. Roasted ores were submitted to chemical analysis and the extent of roasting reactions was determined. In case of pyrite, extent of roasting reactions was not affected much by reactor length and heating temperature (above 500¦C), but was considerably by ore/air ratio. Micro- scopic and XMA examinations led to the conclus- ion that pyrite particles decomposed to pyrrho- tite and then pyrrhotite was oxidized to give Fe-S-0 melt, magnetite and hematite. The extent of reaction was not uniform in all particles but had a wide distribution from unreacted pyrite to completely oxidized particles. Combustion of Cu-concentrate from Kuroko complex sulfide ore ) was unstable under a uniform wall temperature of 450¦C, but proceed- ed rapidly at temperatures above 500¦C. Sticking of roasted ores to the wall of the reaction tube induced choking of the tube, caused by melting of roasted ores, at tempera- tures above 950¦C. Enrichment of oxygen exterted less influence on reaction rate than heating temperature of the tube. Particle size of ore had a big effect on reaction rate.

The approach to this subject is a very general one, but an attempt has been made to cover briefly a very wide field in the nationally important job of manufacturing iron for the iron and steel industry.Some historical data concerning the development of the furnace itself from early days have been followed by the modern ideas on raw materials and their beneficiation. Recent furnace design and modern auxiliaries have been given attention with, finally, some developments in practical operation.HISTORICALWhen dealing with such large 'and costly operating units as blast furnaces, there is not the same opportunity for research in design as in most other metallurgical processes. Over past generations the development of furnace design, or "lines" as it is usually termed, as well as most radical operating changes, has been very gradual.However, there have been some periods of rapid progress due to revolutionary changes. One such was the adoption of the steam engine for blowing and charging operations, and also, during this same era, about 1750, coke was first used as fuel in place of charcoal. Another revolutionary change came some 100 years later, when heating the blast became usual practice.Since then there have been great improvements in mechanical equipment and in the preparation of raw .materials. These factors, together with a better understanding of what happens inside the furnace, have led to the development of those large mechanically operated structures which are the most modern in blast furnace design.For many, years America has led the world in pig iron production and in furnace development, so that American design and practice is now recognised almost as standard. This type of furnace replaced the older stacks in England, Russia, Germany, South Africa and India, as well as here in Australia.

This paper reviews the floor heave mechanisms in underground coal mine roadways. Previous studies have reported three main failure mechanisms: bearing capacity failure, buckling and swelling. The buckling failure has been observed where immediate floor strata are relatively strong and thinly bedded. On the contrary, the weak floor strata have been associated with both the bearing capacity failure and swelling mechanisms. The bearing capacity floor failures are likely to induce other types of instability such as pillar punching, tensile failure of pillar, roof fall and subsidence as well as floor heave. Despite a considerable amount of research, predicting the magnitude, location and timing of floor deformation is challenging with current state of knowledge. his report is going to point to that the effect of the mining dewatering on the area of Transdanubian Mountain Range has reached a phase when the cost of dewatering and providing damages can seriously jeopardize a profitable mining operation. Up to 60s the interest of mining had been dominant only, but since the begining of 80s the conceptions of industrial development and the value of enviroment protection have been changed. The natural karstwater balance of the TMR can be presented (Figure Land 2.) and the present situation of it points to that the descharge has exceeded the reacharge in 50 %. During the past 10 years the decreasing of the stored karstic water resourches was 1.1 km . The decreasing of the spring yields reached 80-82 % of the natural ones. (Figure 3-4.). Conservation of the present discharge may lead up to the totaly drain of the karstwater regime. A computer aid control system had been to develop by the bauxite mining and using of it the yield of dewatering decreased and a moderate rising of the water table has started since 1986. A recunstruction was made at the biggest thermal-medicinal lake its springs have had their source in 40 meter depth inside a spring cave at the bottom of the lake. Earlier the spring yield decreased due to the dewatering activity of mines. As a result of using of the CAC system and the providing works at the thermal sprino,the karstwater balance has got in the state of equilibrum, the first cost was decreased and spring yield was increased and the enviromental limits were adverted from the way of mining.

Coal seam methane (CSM) is an æunconventionalÆ gas resource that is becoming an important energy resource for Australia, especially along the eastern seaboard. It has been conventionally believed that methane in high rank coals was exclusively derived from thermocatalytic processes during decomposition of coal at elevated temperatures. However, recent re-interpretations of gas composition and isotope data have indicated that microbial methane generation may be one of the main processes responsible for the accumulation of commercially producible methane in some coals. In low rank (æbrownÆ and sub-bituminous) coals, methane (CH4) is mainly generated by microbial activity at low temperatures. The amount of this biogenic gas generated and accumulated in low rank coals depends largely on the rate of burial and depth. Most low rank coals are æunder-saturatedÆ with respect to their maximum gas sorption capacity. In contrast, high rank coals may be highly saturated due to extensive gas generation from both thermogenic and secondary biogenic processes. However, in basins where secondary biogenic gases have not replenished the thermogenic gas lost during basin uplift, the coals will be æunder-saturatedÆ. In many basins around the world, high CSM producing zones appear to contain secondary biogenic CH4 generated by microbes transported in meteoric water recharge through permeable coal seams. Biogenic CH4 generation requires the activity of a consortium of anaerobic respiring microorganisms, fermentative bacteria and acetogenic bacteria to break down complex organic molecules to simpler molecules having one or two carbon atoms, which enables methanogenic archaea to generate CH4. The two main methanogenic pathways in the generation of secondary biogenic gas from coal are aceticlastic reaction and carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction. In eastern Australian coals CO2 reduction appears to be the main process. The types of microbes that are directly involved in these processes are unknown because they have not yet been isolated from the coal seams. The CSIRO is currently investigating the processes of biogenic gas generation in Australian coals. Potential may exist to introduce appropriate microbes into deep coal seams to enhance methane saturation levels, gas sorption capacities and permeabilities.

Taiwan is situated between Ryukyu and the Philippines with 35,960 sq. km of area, being slightly larger than Belgium It has roughly a spindle-shaped outline with a longitudinal axis extending in a roughly north-south direction. Geologically, Taiwan is extremely complex in terms of its tectonic setting in the convergence zone between the Asian continent and the Philippine Sea Plate. To the east of Taiwan, the Philippine Sea Plate subducts beneath the Ryukyu island arc, and to the south of Taiwan the Philippine Sea Plate overrides the Asian plate along the Manila Trench. Taiwan, therefore, occupies an unstable region between these two well-defined subduction systems of opposite polarity (see the following block diagram).

Aberfoyle has been applying computer methods to mine geology in small to medium-sized underground mines since the early 1980's. Recently, the installation of DATAMINE software at the Hellyer Mine in Tasmania has allowed development of computerised applications which assist both mine geologists and mine planning engineers on a daily basis.Comprehensive data is entered into a database prior to survey coordinating to produce a processed database which can be accessed for construction of a variety of plots. The folded and faulted nature of the orebody contacts at Hellyer has necessitated the use of the structure contour method to provide a complete 3-D spatial interpretation. Computer-generated contact intersection points are hand-contoured before digitising and wireframing as a digital terrain model. This wireframe model can be sectioned in any plane for mine planning.

The use of rubber-tyred equipment in a decline mining system requires that roadways be kept free of running water. At Renison this is achieved by the use of stage pumping or gravitating to a major pump station and pumping from there directly to the surface. The frequent use of pick-up lines and pump boxes in the decline system provides a method of water control and reduces the amount of slimes in pump lines. The Bassett Fault structure, which lies on the hangingwall of the mine is the major source of ground water. This is encountered in diamond drill holes and exploration develop- ment. Dewatering of this structure is possible by controlling the flow from selected holes. Future pumping requirements may be predicted by analysing changes in the level of the water table and by calculating dewatering rates required to maintain ore reserves available for production.
