The possible oil territory of Alabama can be readily divided into two regions, the Paleozoic area of the north, and the Coastal Plain province of Cretaceous and younger formations lying to the south. This latter area has received much attention in the last few years and has been described by a number of writers.' Although the possibilities of the Cretaceous series have been much emphasized by recent writers, the fact remains that the two, or possibly three, localities where oil or gas have been found in anything like paying quantities are confined to the area of Carboniferous rocks. Moreover, almost all of the oil seeps and a good percentage of the gas seeps are confined to this area.2 Topographically, as well as structurally, the Paleozoic area can be divided into three rather well defined provinces: (1) The broad, open Coosa Valley lying adjacent to the crystalline oldland, with comparatively little relief, except for occasional longitudinal ridges and rather intense folding; (2) the plateau region of horizontal or gently warped Pennsylvanian strata broken by occasional anticlinal valleys aligned northeast and southwest, outliers of the Coosa Valley proper, in which the older Paleozoic formations are exposed—a region of much relief (200

An exact statistical treatment of a one-dimensional model is used as a basis for evoluating the reliability of certain simplified expressions for the activity of the solute in interstitial solutions, including one obtained from the exact expression by setting the repulsive interaction equal to infinity. The latter approximation is found to be satisfactory at low and moderate concentration if the repulsive interaction is large, even though not infinite. A similar expression (identical if the co-odination number is two) is derived from the quasichemical expression of Lacher, and is recommended as the best available expression for the excess configurational entropy of interstitial solutions with excluded sites. Some reasonable models are discussed, and the nature of the saturated solutions is determined by inspection. Some of the models reduce to the one -dimensional case. An analysis is given of the excess partial entropy of hydrogen in V-H; Nb-H; and To-H solutions. MOST treatments of the statistical thermodynamics of interstitial solid solutions have followed the classic paper1 of Lacher in making the simplifying assumption that the configurational entropy of the solution is ideal. However, it is becoming increasingly apparent that there are many interstitial solutions with very large so lute-solute repulsions, and for these the assumption of ideal entropy is not valid or useful. It is important to realize that with substitutional solutions large repulsions between the component atoms must lead to phase separation, whereas in interstitial solutions the free energy of the solution is not drastically increased by large solute-solute repulsions until intrinsic saturation is reached at the concentration where further solute would be forced to enter a site in which it would experience the repulsive effect of one or more solute atoms already present. In the limiting case of an infinitely large repulsive interaction, the excess free energy would be attributable entirely to excess entropy, the enthalpy of mixing being zero. AS will be shown below, even if the repulsions are less than infinite, a treatment based on an assumption of infinite repulsions may be very satisfactory up to moderately high concentrations of the interstitial component. Often in solutions where large repulsive interactions exist, there are also small interactions — often attractive—between solute atoms in configurations other than that corresponding to the large repulsion. In such cases the excess free energy will consist of an excess entropy term attributable to the large repulsive interactions, and an enthalpy term corresponding to the other small interactions. Nomenclature to differentiate succinctly between important cases would be a convenience. In this paper the nomenclature shown in Table I will be used. In Table I, and in the preceeding discussion, excess quantities are defined in terms of standard states which are pure solid solvent and pure (possibly hypothetical) solid saturated phase of the structure in question. In practice, it is more convenient to choose the interstitial element as a component, and its conventional standard state. This will add a composition-independent term to the excess entropy and the enthalpy. The earliest paper known to the present author which treats the thermodynamics of athermal interstitial solutions was given by schei12 in 1951, but the statistical derivations in that paper are open to criticism. Speiser and Spretnak were the first to give a correct statistical treatment,3 limited, however, to concentrations sufficiently low that the number of empty sites excluded from occupancy by more than one filled site is negligible. The purpose of the present paper is to extend the statistical treatment to more concentrated solutions, and to examine the magnitude of the errors introduced by assuming that the repulsive interactions are infinite when in fact they must be finite. THE QUASICHEMICAL APPROXIMATION Fortunately, a standard method already exists for taking into account the effect of large interactions upon the entropy of mixing. This is the quasi-chemical method, in which the probability of existence of a given pair of solute atoms in a certain proximate configuration is assumed to be proportional to exp(-w/kT), where w is the energy increase of the solution when the two atoms are moved from isolated locations in the solution to the configuration in question. A quasichemical treatment of interstitial solutions was given in 1937 in a widely neglected paper by Lacher.4 The result comes out

A preferred orientation is known to occur frequently in the columnar zone of castings. This has been attributed to a preferred direction of growth. However, no satisfactory mechanism was proposed by which the preferred direction of growth led to the preferred orientation. The purpose of this work has been to establish this mechanism. It has been found that in general the observed preferred orientations only develop when the preferred directions of growth reveal themselves by dendritic growth. A mechanism based on this premise is found to be in agreement with the experimental data obtained in the course of this work. WHEN a liquid metal is allowed to solidify in a mold, it usually freezes in three stages, distinguished from each other by the size and shape of the grains. The first zone to freeze (the chill zone near the mold wall) consists of relatively fine grains that are equiaxed in shape and random in orientation. The next zone consists of crystals that are elongated in the direction of heat flow, i.e., normal to mold wall. These crystals are much larger in cross section than the crystals of the chill zone and have a very strongly preferred orientation. This is the columnar zone. The final zone, which is absent in very pure metals, is again equiaxed and randomly oriented, but usually has a much coarser grain size than the chill zone. The purpose of this study is to describe and account for the crystal size and orientation in the columnar zone. The occurrence of a preferred orientation in the columnar zone is well known, and in 1940, Greninger' suggested that it is apparently related to dendritic growth although at that time the only data were for metals with the face-centered-cubic structure. Table I shows that the direction of dendritic growth and the crystal axis that follows the heat flow direction coincide in all cases so far studied. The term "dendritic growth" is used here to represent the branched type of morphology that is characteristic of growth into supercooled melts.' In addition to the supercooling which is necessary before nucleation will occur at the mold wall, the necessary supercooling for continued dendritic growth can be provided in a mold by heat flow into the already formed solid at an interface whose Liquidus temperature is depressed by an accumula-

THE Presidio mine of The American Metal Co. of Texas is situated 45 miles south of Marfa, Texas, a town on the Southern Pacific R. R., and lies approximately 20 miles north of the Mexican border. Communication with the railroad is maintained over a state highway. All supplies for mine and mill are hauled in by truck from Marfa and precipitates and concentrates are freighted to the railroad by the same means and shipped to Selby and El Paso, respectively. The mill is at the town of Shafter, 1 mile from the mine and at approximately 350 ft. lower elevation. The ore is conveyed to it by an aerial tramway which requires practically no power on account of the difference in elevation. The mill is a countercurrent decantation cyanide and gravity concentrating plant of 200 tons daily capacity. Coarse and fine crushing are done at the mill. Two near-by shallow wells in the bed of Cibolo Creek furnish an abundance of water. Power is generated for the mill and town by a Diesel engine plant.

THE two earlier papers in this series1,2 presented data on the rate of diffusion of carbon and of manganese in gamma iron. Apart from their scientific interest, these [] data are needed chiefly in order to treat data on carburization, on the rate of formation of pearlite, and on the rate of austenizing in a quantitative way. 1,2,9,10 In the present investigation rates of diffusion of nickel in -?-Fe over wide temperature and concentration ranges have been determined, and the effects of carbon, of impurities, and of grain size on these rates have been studied. Claussen,3 using the data of Fry,4 has calculated the diffusion coefficient of nickel [ ] in -?-Fe as 9.2 X 10-11 sq. cm. per sec. at 1200T., but had no data from which to calculate the variation of D with concentration, temperature, and percentage of carbon. Belt scales are frequently used in the mining industry because of the ability to handle large tonnages without interrupting the material flow, fitting easily into all types of bulk handling systems and being relatively inexpensive. Although manufacturers claim weighing accuracies better than Y2%, many operators experience, in practice, much larger errors and they have become apprehensive about the use of belt scales. However, in spite of these disappointing instances, a belt scale is one of the most valuable tools for process and inventory control. Since it is a measuring device, care should be given to the design and installation of belt scales. The basic components of a belt scale are: (1) conveyor belt, (2) scale suspension, (3) sensing device, (4) integrating and recording. The first component of this system is of great importance to the overall accuracy and has been thoroughly discussed in earlier papers. This paper will review primarily the various scale hardware designs currently available, and will be confined to the last three components of the system.

Alpha Portland Cement Co.'s mining operations at Manheim W. Va., produce 750,000 bbl of limestone yearly, averaging 2200 bbl per working day. Thirteen parallel entries have been driven to date, each almost 30 ft high and about 45 ft wide, extending back 5000 ft to the working faces. Pitch of the seam from the lowest to the highest entries is steep enough to provide excellent year- round natural ventilation, and this, together with the size of the entries and a good bottom, has allowed face crews to drive right up to the working areas in the family car.

AMONG the many cases of replacement of one mineral by another, that of quartz or silicates by pyrite, or even other sulphides, is not uncommon, but the reverse of this process does not appear to have been recorded, even if it has been observed. It, therefore, seemed to the writer that the case described below was worthy of record. FIG. Several simplifications have been accepted in filtration theory during the past fifty years in an effort to avoid apparently intractable mathematical problems. In effect, these simplifications ignored the variation in average cake porosity and average filtration resistance with variation in pressure drop or with time. This study examines the traditional approach and shows that, in many cases, it cannot give correct design guidance. Using a set of dimensionless parameters because of the large number of significant variables, a revised theory is developed which does not require that porosity and resistance values be set constant. Graphs developed in the traditional approach (e.g., dt/dv versus v or t/v versus V) have substantial curvature near the ordinate; but this curvature is frequently ignored in theory and is easily missed in experiments. The revised theory allows more accurate design calculations, especially for compressible cakes.

So far as the writer is aware, the discussion has invariably centered around the classification of underground mining methods, and only superficial attention has been directed to surface methods. Volume 72, page 10, of the Institute Transactions, presents such a classification, sponsored by the Mining Methods Committee of the Institute. A similar classification by Prof. Hugh P. Nicholson appeared in Mining and Metallurgy in October, 1934. The two classifications are quite different in their treatment of underground methods but are identical in classifying surface methods, although Professor Nicholson does suggest possible further divisions for surface mining and admits that such subdivision is more difficult than appears at first. THAT geology and mining should stand in close and mutually helpful relationship was recognized in the United States at an early period, but it is not possible to set a precise date at which the study of ore deposits became a thoroughly reputable and important branch of geological science. As early as 1850, appeared the first ,part of Foster and Whitney's report1 on the Lake Superior region, devoted mainly to the copper-bearing areas, followed, in the succeeding year, by the second part,2 on the iron lands. This appears to have been the first comprehensive report on what might, at that time at least, be called "western" ore deposits to be prepared and published under the auspices of the Federal government. An outgrowth from this work was Whitney's Metallic Wealth of the United States,3 which appeared in 1854. It was the earliest general work on the ore deposits of the country, and remained a standard reference book for marly forty years. From 1853 on, various parties were sent out by the War Department to explore routes for proposed railways and wagon roads from the Mississippi Valley to the Pacific Coast. Geologists were attached to most of these parties, but their work was mainly of broad reconnaissance character, little attention being paid to ore deposits. Although the

THOUGH the rapid revival of the copper market in the early twenties solved the most serious of the company's immediate postwar difficulties, a much more fundamental, long-range problem still remained. Mining is not like farming: the earth does not bring forth a new crop of gold, silver, lead, zinc, oil, or copper at every harvest time. Metal taken from the ground does not spring up again from the old roots like perennial flowers in a garden, or find renewal in freshly sown seed. No ore body, whatever its size or richness, is too big or too rich to escape ultimate exhaustion. When the war closed in 1918, Phelps Dodge had been mining copper from Bisbee, Morenci, and Nacozari over periods varying in length from ten to nearly forty years. During much of that time, the company's production had run from fifty million to as high as two hundred million pounds a year. Even the greatest of mines had to respond in time to such a drain. Since German operators opened the Tsumeb mine in the early 1900's, continuous operation has been interrupted only by enforced shutdowns during two world wars and the depression of the 1930's. Original metallurgical practice was blast furnace smelting. This was applicable only to low zinc ore, leaving large tonnages of high zinc ore to be stockpiled on the surface. A gravity concentrator using tables, buddles, and jigs operated for several years, but differential flotation of the ore did not get beyond the experimental stage. When the property was put up for sale by the South African Custodian of Enemy Property there was an estimated 434,000 tons of ore on surface dumps. The dump material, assaying 4.48 pct Cu, 15.8 pct Pb, and 10.9 pct Zn, had become highly oxidized during a stay of many years on the surface. But these dump ores had to be used in evaluating possible metallurgy because the shaft became flooded after the 1940 shutdown and underground ore was unavailable. Many companies examined Tsumeb but quickly lost enthusiasm because of the formidable metallurgical problems presented by the dump ore. However, on the basis of extensive test work, the present company decided that differential flotation would be successful and purchased the property after competitive bidding.

Formation damage, i.e.. reduclion in permeability, has been generally attribuled to clay minerals which expand or disperse upon contact with water that is less saline than the connate water. Luboratory, studies show that penneahility reduction can also occur in formalions containing only nonexpandable clays such as illite or kaolinite, and can be caused also by changes in pH. Furthermore, pH changes can damage even formations that are essentially free of clays. It is suggested that permeability reduction is due to the small passages being blocked by particles, which may be dispersed clays, cemenlion material or other fine parricles. These particles are dislodged by dispersion of clays due to changes in salinity or by dissolution of calcareous cement by acids, or of silicaceous cement by alkaline solutions. In working with reservoir cores, it was found that extracted cores damaged more easily and extensively than nonextracted cores. The extent of damage depended also on tenlperatltre. INTRODUCTION Permeability is an important property of porous media and has been the subject of many studies by engineers and geologists. Many of these studies are conccrned with formation damage, i.e., reduction in permeability, resulting from exposure of oil-producing formations to water substantially less saline than the connate water. This effect causes understandable concern since during drilling, completion and production phases formations are often exposed to fresh water. The damage resulting from contact with relatively fresh water has been attributed to expansion and dispersion oF clay minerals. During laboratory investigation of the use of NaOH as a wettability reversal agent to increase oil recovery from oil-wet reservoirs, several cores used in the displacement studies suffered loss in permeability. Despite the traditional usage of NaOH for conditioning aqueous mud systems, the role of the caustic filtrate in wellbore damage seems to have been overlooked. Browning2 as recently reported on the effects of NaOH in dispersing clay minerals but he was concerned only with complications that may arise in drilling massive shale beds. The following study was made to examine the role of pH and salinity changes in core damage. Where cores from reservoirs were used, tests were performed with extracted and nonextracted cores both at room and reser- voir temperatures, since it was felt that the test environment and core condition may affect the results. Because of its limited coverage and exploratory nature, this study is not intended to provide answers to field formation damage problems. It is hoped that it will encourage research into new aspects of the permeability reduction problems, particularly those allied to new recovery and production processes. PROCEDURE In all permeability tests, fluids were pumped through the cores at a constant volumetric rate. Only deaerated fluids and reagent grade chemicals were used. The fluids were passed through two ultrafine filters before injection to remove any entrained particles. The cores, with the exception of the unconsolidated cores, were mounted in Hassler holders. Water was used to transmit pressure to the sleeve. The inlet endpiece had two entry ports which permitted scavenging one fluid with another to avoid any mixing in the small holdup volume. The cores were flushed with CO2 gas, evacuated for 5 to 6 hours and saturated with the first liquid at a pressure of 1,000 psi for 24 hours to eliminate any free gas from the cores. Pressure differences up to 20 psi were measured by transducers, calibrated in inches of water and continuously recorded. For greater pressure drops, gauges were used. All reservoir cores were cleaned with a light refined mineral oil, then with heptane, and finally dried with CO2. Compatibility tests showed that no precipitates formed when mineral oil and the crudes were mixed. Some cores were extracted in Dean-Stark-type solvent extractors using xylene and trichloroethane and dried in a vacuum oven at 450F. Each test consisted of a sequence of water, test solution, and again water flow. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION STUDIES IN BEREA CORES Salinity Contrast Berea cores 2-in. in diameter and 12-in. long were cut from sandstone quarried in Cleveland, Ohio. The clay minerals were identified by X-ray diffraction to be chlorite, kaolinite, illite and incerlayered illite. Flow of fresh water or 30,000 ppm brinc does not cause any permeability reduction (Fig. 1). However, after injection of brine the core is readily damaged by fresh water. Damage starts almost instantly as the fresh water injection is begun, and at a cumulative injection of 1.2 PV fresh water, the permeability has dropped from 190 to 0.9 md. This investigation was made to evaluate the comparative effects of the viscosity and the phase behavior of the buffer fluid in the composite solvent displacement of Bradford crude from waterflooded sandstone cores. Buffer slugs of propane, naphtha and other refined hydrocarbons exbihiting increasingly favorable viscosity ratios and decreasing solubility relationships, respectively, with Bradford crude, were used in long Berea sandstone cores. The secondary slug was isopropyl alcohol. The results indicate that higher oil recoveries are obtained for increasingly favorable phase relationships even when these are accompanied by unfavorable viscosity ratios within the range studied. Moreover, when propane is used as a buffer slug with an adverse viscosity ratio of 36, it gives higher oil recoveries than at a similar size slug of an any1 alcohol having a viscosity ratio of 1.09. The investigation was extended to the study of the effect of flooding rate on oil recovery. Residual Bradford crude was displaced from a 6-ft Berea sandstone core at rates varying from 0.3 to 30 ft/ day. The results show that as flooding rates were increased above or decreased below a minimum range of 1 to 2 ft /day, displacement efficiency increased considerably. INTRODUCTION In recent years, the alcohol slug process as a means of tertiary recovery has been the subject of many investigations. Gatlin and Slobod showed the advantages of the combination solvent slugs over the previous single-slug process.1 The combination slugs require less total slug material to obtain similar oil recoveries. The basic combination process involves injecting a primary or buffer solvent which is preferentially oleophilic, followed in turn by a water-driven slug of isopropyl alcohol. This procedure ensures that the buffer slug, which is miscible only with the reservoir oil, displaces and replaces the oil and is in turn displaced, together with the water, by the isopropyl alcohol slug miscible with both fluids. Likewise, for those reservoir oils that show some degree of phase incompatibility with isopropyl alcohol, as does Bradford crude, a proper buffer solvent can artificially make the alcohol process technically feasible. From an economic standpoint, propane or LPG would be the most appropriate primary solvent to be used in the field; however, Taber, et a12 have indicated that the alcohol process becomes highly inefficient in the displacement of light hydrocarbons because of the entrapment of these hydrocarbons during the stabilized bank formation. Moreover, since materials such as propane have such low viscosities, adverse viscosity ratios with most reservoir oils would be penerated, thereby possibly further reducing the efficiency of the buffer solvent. This paper presents the results of an experimental study of the comparative effects of viscosity ratio and phase relationships on the displacement efficiency of Bradford crude by means of dual solvents. The work was extended to include the effect of flooding rate on oil recovery. Rates within the range of field and laboratory values were used. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE APPARATUS The porous media used in this study consisted of two 10-ft and one 6-ft Berea sandstone cores, 3-in. in diameter. These were cast in galvanized steel pipe of 31/2-in. ID and the annulus was filled with Armstrong cement. The 10-ft cores were assembled by connecting two 5-ft units, which were joined together by 8-in. steel flanges fitted to the pipe. Intimate contact between the two sections was obtained by inserting a thin disk of the same sandstone between the core faces. The outlet and inlet ends of the cores were covered with threaded pipe caps. The injected fluid was gravity fed to two variable-rate positive-displacement pumps. It is known from the early work of Bridgman that the two lowest-pressure transitions (I-II and II-III) are accompanied by substantial and abrupt changes in resistivity and Volume. However, unlike the temperature -induced allotropic transformations observed in such elements as lithium, cobalt, tin, and so forth, there is little actually known about many of the characteristics of the pressure-in&ced transitions. This current work involves an examination of the structural and transformation characteristics of the bismuth I-II and II-III transitions under hydrostatic pressures. The relationship of initial structure to the transformation pressure, rate, resistivity change, and resultant structure is discussed. It is shown that the transition pressure and transformation rate are independent of the presence of grain boundaries and associated anisotropy-induced deformation. An observed hysteresis in both the I-II and II-III transitions is shown. BISMUTH is one of the most interesting of the elements exhibiting pressure-induced polymorphs since it undergoes several allotropic transformations at pressures below 90,000 atm. It is known from the early work of bridman1,2 that the two lowest-pressure transitions (1-11 and 11-111) are accompanied by substantial and abrupt changes in resistance and volume. However, unlike the temperature-induced allotropic transformations observed in such elements as lithium, cobalt, tin, and so forth, there is little actually known about many of the characteristics of these pressure-induced transitions. It is the purpose of this work to examine some of the structural and transformation characteristics of the bismuth 1-11 and 11-111 transitions under hydrostatic pressures. Another interesting characteristic of bismuth is that, in its polycrystalline form, hydrostatic pressures of sufficient magnitude will induce severe progressive plastic deformation in the region of the grain boundaries.3 This deformation, which has also been observed in several other metals, is attributed to the high degree of anisotropy in the linear compressibility of bismuth, resulting in shear stresses in the grain boundaries when it is exposed to hydrostatic pressure. Most thermally induced allotropic transformations in metals, whether of the diffusionless ather-ma1 (martensitic) or isothermal nucleation and growth types, are dependent upon structure and prior history,4 viz., grain boundaries, deformation, and so forth. One logically wonders then whether the transformation characteristics of the pressure-induced polymorphs in bismuth might also depend upon initial structure, particularly with respect to the presence of grain boundaries and associated plastic deformation. In this investigation, the role of grain boundaries and plastic deformation on the characteristics of the bismuth I-II and 11-111 transitions will be established. The rather unique residual microstruc-tural changes associated with these transitions will be presented and discussed. The occurrence of a measurable hysteresis in both the I-II and 11-111 transitions will be demonstrated. The type of transformation mechanism based on the observed transformation rate will be discussed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Apparatus. The hydrostatic pressure system utilized in this investigation is similar to that previously reported by Bridgman' and Birch and Robertson,5 and has been previously described.3 For the purpose of this work, the pressure medium utilized was a 1:l mixture of pentane and isopentane. Pressure measurement was by means of a manganin coil in conjunction with a Foxboro Recorder. The manganin coil was mounted in the bottom closure and inserted inside the pressure cavity. Based on calibration against a controlled clearance piston gage at approximately 10,000 atm, the estimated error in the pressure measurement was +2 pct. Assuming the nonlinearity in the pressure coefficient of resistivity between 10,000 and 28,000 atm to be not greater than 1 pct, then the estimated error in the range of the I-II and 11-111 transitions was +3 pct. MEASURES appropriate for the control of the silicosis hazard in mining cannot be formulated precisely, but sufficient knowledge1-19 has accumu-lated during the past quarter century to permit the suggestion of useful, though partly empirical, rules for its alleviation. The industrial hygienist today recognizes that the peril incurred by the inhalation of harmful dust is a function of two variable factors-the degree of harmful exposure and the specific susceptibility of the exposed individual to pulmonary injury. Con-trol of the danger arising out of prolonged contact with pernicious air-borne particulate matter is consequently best exercised by influencing both of these recognized variables. Obviously the problem has two broad aspects-one, medical; the other within the province of the engineer.
