In the past few years the hydraulic aspects of rotary drilling have received considerable attention. It is generally recognized that accurate prediction of circulating pressures is desirable, particularly in those areas where a delicate pressure balance is necessary to prevent both blowouts and lost circulation. For calculation purposes the standard hydraulic equations for the pipeline flow of Newtonian fluids have been altered to facilitate similar calculations for non-Newtonian or plastic fluids.'.' This latter classification includes most colloidal types of drilling muds. Two properties: plastic viscosity, un, and Bingharn yield value, Y,, are commonly used to define the flow characteristics of a plastic fluid. These are commonly obtained with multispeed viscosimeters such as the Fann V-G meter.3 Normally these measurements are obtained at some surface temperature, and are not corrected to circulating temperatures for calculation purposes. This may result in considerable error, particularly in the laminar flow calculations which comnlonly apply to the drill pipe-borehole annulus. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of temperature on the flow properties of some water-base muds. A laboratory model Fann V-G meter was used for measurement of viscosities, yield values and gel strengths. An aluminum water jacket with O-ring seals was machined to fit around the mud cup of the Fann meter. All mud samples were prepared by thorough mixing in a Hobart mixer. Viscosity and gel strength measurements were made with the Fann meter using standard procedures. Flow properties of muds were studied at 80, 120, 160 and 180°F. The compositions of the test samples are given in Table 1. The typical effect of temperature on the flow properties of these drilling muds is illustrated by Fig. 1. It was found that plastic viscosity and apparent viscosity decreased with an increase of temperature. However, the curves were not linear, and did not appear to follow any definite trends or patterns. Yield point data showed much more scattering.' Since a usable method for predicting drilling mud flow behavior with temperature was desired, an attempt was made to find a simple relationship between these variables. The present paper discusses applications of importance to many others who must analyze reports in the steel plant, as well as other examples of interest to metallurgists. Statistical Methods Logically Suited to Plant Problems.—Statistical methods are not new as a branch of mathematics. Until comparatively recently, however, practical applications were confined mainly to actuarial science, biology, and economics; fields in which an observed result is obviously influenced (and often determined) by a complicated set of variables more or less constantly tending to affect it. As pointed out by Daeves,2 a decade or more ago, problems in industry are basically similar to those in these other fields in that a given result is at least partly due to that chance combination of causes happening to be present at the time. When trying to do the same thing repeatedly, constant results are never attained; they vary about the desired result with more or less well defined mathematical regularity. Such a condition arises out of the great number of factors tending to affect the final result. If statistical methods are so valuable to the biologist or economist, why then should they not also be of great value to plant managers and engineers, and to all who must interpret reports from various sources in the industrial plant? Within the last few years, industry has become conscious of this situation, and the use of these methods has been rapidly expanding in such p1ants. The occurrence of outcrops of bituminous schists and sandstones impregnated with heavy asphaltie petroleum first directed attention to the São Pedro area as a possible source of commercial production of petroleum. Since 1920, more than 20 wells have been drilled in this area. The discovery of oil shows and small quantities of natural gas in some of the early wells led to the continuation of drilling in the hope that more important findings would result. During the early part of 1934, detailed magnetometer observations were made in this area, and a considerable number of torsion balance stations were occupied. The results of these geophysical observations help considerably to clarify the structure of the area and the very considerable amount of geologic information available makes possible a much more exact interpretation of geophysical anomalies. In presenting the results of these observations, and interpretation of the geophysical data, certain actual case problems are included; i.e., geophysical anomalies due to anomalous masses of which the forms and positions are more or less known. Although anomalies due to igneous intrusions are probably more important to geophysicists in Brazil than in other countries, these data have a certain interest for all geophysicists, particularly because they were obtained in the south magnetic hemisphere, where the lines of magnetic force are directed upward, and in a region of moderately low inclination. This is considered as a geological-geophysical problem, and only passing mention will be given to the petroleum possibilities of the area. The success of the Charpy impact test in the steel industry has led those interested in aluminum alloys to investigate the possible application of this test to aluminum and its alloys. In this paper are set forth the results of a few preliminary tests made at the Lynite Laboratories of the Aluminum Manufactures, Inc. In order to study more thoroughly the significance of the Charpy test, slow-bending tests have been made duplicating the arrangement of the impact machine. Tests have been made on both notched and unnotched specimens of a series of copper-aluminum alloys. Apparatus The standard American-made Charpy impact machine delivering a blow of over 200 ft.-lb. was much too large to test aluminum-alloy specimens of the same type used for steel, so that it was necessary either to adopt a larger specimen or to have a special light-weight hammer made. Since there is no known relation between specimens of different sixes, even though geometrically similar, it was decided to adhere to the 10 by 10 mm. specimen. Accordingly, Sauveur and Boylston, the American makers of the machine, were asked to construct a special light-weight pendulum adapted to their standard machine, this pendulum to have one-tenth the capacity of the standard. The writer wishes here to acknowledge his indebtedness to Mr. H. M. Boylston for the personal interest and care exercised in constructing this pendulum. The machine with the light-weight hammer in place is shown in Fig. I. It is mounted on a concrete foundation with the concrete covering the flange on the base of the machine. Vibration is further prevented by four 5/8-in. (15.8 mm.) foundation bolts. The large standard hammer shown against the wall was also used for some of the unnotched bars that required more than 20 ft.-lb. to rupture. Since so many different curves have been published for the solid solubility of zinc in aluminum, it seems desirable to definitely establish the correct curve by two or more independent methods. The curve published in part I1t was based entirely upon X-ray measurements because the other methods employed at that time were not satisfactory. The present paper (the seventeenth of this series on high-purity aluminum alloys) describes the determination of the solid solubility of zinc in aluminum by the measurement of electrical resistivity at temperature and by microscopic examination. Since the publication of our part I in 1932, an investigation of the solubility relations in the aluminum-zinc system has been reported by Schmid and Wassermann2, who obtained their solubility results from lattice-parameter measurements on heat-treated and quenched specimens. The diagram that they published is shown in Fig. 1. In this investigation they also found by X-ray measurements that the parameter of the gamma phase changed continuously with zinc content and at such a rate that it would be identical with that of the beta phase at 60 atomic per cent zinc. It was concluded therefore that the beta and gamma phases, from the point of view of structural relationship, are one single phase. They also suggested a gap of immiscibility between 270" and 350" C. The complete boundary in this region could not be determined satisfactorily by the method employed and therefore was not shown in their diagram. Aluminum-zinc Alloys Materials Used.—Electrolytically refined aluminum3 was used in preparing the alloys for the work reported in this paper. Chemical analysis showed the following impurities: 0.004 to 0.005 per cent silicon, 0.006 to 0.008 per cent iron and 0.005 to 0.006 per cent copper. Also,

The mechanism of hardening in heat-treatable zirconium alloys was foUNd to be analogous to that for titanium alloys. Zirconium containing a relatively large addition of a ß -stabilizing element such as molybdenum or columbium can be hardened by the following transformation: Lean alloys, having insufficient alloy content to retain ß at room temperature are hardened by the following transformation: Application of these findings in Zr-Mo-Sn and Zr-Nb-Sn alloys produced strengths as high as 190,000 psi with reasonable ductility. PRIOR research on zirconium alloys has been concerned with development of greater strengths and creep resistance by solid-solution hardening or by dispersion hardening. Although solution and aging heat treatments had been applied earlier to zirconium alloys, quenching frequently produced low ductility. The possibility that the ß-to-w transformation, discovered earlier in titanium alloys,' might also occur in zirconium alloys and cause low ductility was considered, and, indeed, was found as predicted2 to be the case. In the earliest experiments, the heat-treatment response of titanium, too, was disappointing. However, by avoiding the formation of the embrittling w phase, it became practical to obtain room-temperature strengths higher than 180,000 psi, with elongation values of 10 pct.3 Based on the present concept of titanium heat treatment, the principal requirement for a heat-treatable zirconium alloy is that it contains a certain minimum amount of one or more ß -stabilizing elements. Only molybdenum, columbium, and tantalum, when present in sufficient amounts, are known to stabilize ß zirconium to room temperature during rapid cooling from the ß field. Tantalum was undesirable because of its high thermal-neutron cross section. Aluminum and tin are effective a stabilizers, but aluminum has been shown to seriously decrease the corrosion resistance of simple zirconium alloys in hot water. Therefore, for the present study, tin was used as the stabilizer addition. The alloys selected for this evaluation are presented in Table 1 along with their analyses and ß-transus temperatures. IN THE general study of coal, all evidence points in the one direction -that coals had their origin in a manner analogous to that of peat. The best method of studying coal, whether it concerns its chemistry, composition, or physical condition, is to study peat. The essentials in a study of peat are a knowledge of the chemistry of plants, knowledge of decay and of the transformation process of plant-substances into peat. A number of facts must be emphasized, namely, (1) peat is formed under wet conditions only; (2) plants grow in the place where peat is formed; (3) all the plant substances go into the bog; and (4) all the plant substances are subjected to a series of phases of decay which are (a) in the air completely above the water level but in relatively moist conditions; (b) above the water level, but covered by debris; and (c) completely submerged by both water and debris.

SILICON is used in almost all commercial steels; up to about 0.20 pct in killed wrought steels and 0.50 pct in steel castings. Above about 0.50 pct in wrought steels and 0.70 pct in cast steels, silicon is considered an alloy. As an alloy, silicon is useful for several purposes: (I) for its effect on magnetic properties of parts for electrical apparatus; (2) for increasing the yield strength of carbon and low-alloy steels without too much sacrifice of ductility and weldability; (3) for adding hardness and toughness to spring and chisel steels; (4) for adding resistance to scaling and carburization to heat-resistant steels; and (5) for its graphitizing effect in graphitic steels. In acid electric steels for casting we are principally interested in the effect listed second; i.e., increase of strength with minimum sacrifice of ductility.

The deformation of textured sheet of titanium and several of its all-a (hcp) alloys was investigated with two kinds of experiments: tension testing along different directions in the plane of the sheet, and combined-stress loading along the principal axes of anisotropy (the rolling and transverse directions). Texture and plastic anisotropy were evaluated with pole figures and by measurement, as a function of orientation, of the tensile transverse-strain ratio, or R parameter. The results as a whole can be rationalized qualitatively with the present understanding of deformation mechanisms in titanium. Quantitative agreement between the orientation dependence of tensile yield strength and the Predictions of continuum ANISOTROPY in the properties of engineering materials is more the rule than the exception because anisotropy in structure is so common, and the one generally follows the other. Two broad categories of structural anisotropy are represented by mechanical fibering and crystallographic texture. The former is important in many aspects of fracture.' The latter has more significance for yielding and plastic deformation, theory, using the R measurements, was relatively poor. However, in tension-tension quadrants of the yield-locus diagrams, the difference between theory and experiment was hardly more than 10 pct. The maximum texture-hardening effect was found in a 4Al-1/4O2 alloy to be nearly 50 pct. In the compression-compression quadrant, {1012} deformation twinning prevented the locus from expanding much beyond the Position predicted for isotropic material. With increasing temperature the trend in R was downwards, approaching unity (isotropy) near the a-transus temperature; an accompanying development was large amounts of neck-free extension. which are of special concern in this paper. The tendency has been to view crystallographic texture more as a liability or curio than as an asset. The prominent exception is found in silicon-ferrite sheet for power-transformer cores, which is processed to develop a new optimum texture for high electrical efficiency. Yet it should be possible to find other examples, involving other kinds of properties. More specifically, there is good analytical reason to expect improved combined-stress yielding resistance in suitably textured material,2,3 and it has now been shown by experiment that texture hardening or softening is a potentially useful phenomenon in certain engineering devices and processes.'-I To date, work has included measurements of the transverse (width to thickness) strain ratios in the

Two numerical methods are presented JOT solving the equations Jor one-dimensional, multiphase /low in porous media. The case oF variable physical properties is included in the Formulation, although gravity and capillarity are ignored. Both methods are analyzed mathematically, resulting in upper and lower bounds for the ratio of time step to mesh spacing. The methods are applied to two- and three-phase waterflooding problems in laboratory-size cores, and resulting saturation and pressure distributions and production histories are presented graphically. Results oJ the tuo-phase flow problem are in agreement with the predictions of the Buckley-Leuerett theory. Several three-phase flow problems are presented which consider variations in the water injection rate and changes in the initial oil-and ujater-saturation distributions. The results are different physically from the two- phase case; however, it is shown that the Buckley-Lez~erett theory can accurately predict fluid interlace velocities and displacing-fluid frontal snturations for three-phase flow, providing the correct assumptions are made. The above solutions are used as a basis JOT et~aluuting the numerical methods with respect to machine time requirements and allowable time step for a fixed mesh spacing. INTRODUCTION Considerable progress has been made in recent years in obtaining numerical solutions of the equations for two-phase flow in porous media. Douglas, Blair and Wagner2and McEwenll present different methods for solving the one-dimensional case for incompressible fluids with capillarity (the former using finite differences, the latter with an approach based upon characteristics). Fayers and Sheldon4 and Hovanesian and Fayers8 have extended these studies to include the effects of gravity. West, Garvin and Sheldon, l4 in a pioneer paper, treat linear and radial systems with both capillarity and gravity and they also include the effects of compressibility. Douglas, Peaceman and Rachford3 consider two-dimensional, two-phase, in compressible flow with gravity and capillarity and Blair and Peaceman1 have extended this method to allow for compressible fluids. No one, however, has examined the case of three-phase flow, even for the relatively simple case of one-dimensional flow of incompressible fluids in the absence of gravity and capillarity. In obtaining a numerical technique for simulating forward in situ combustion laboratory experiments, Gottfried5 has developed a method for solving the one-dimensional, compressible flow equations with any number of flowing phases. Gravity and capillarity are not included in the formulation. The method has been used successfully, however, for two- and three-phase problems in a variable-temperature field with sources and sinks. This paper examines the algorithm of Gottfried more critically. Two numerical methods are presented for solving the one-dimensional, multi-phase flow equations with variable physical properties. Both methods are analyzed mathematically, and are used to simulate two- and three-phase waterflooding problems. The numerical solutions are then taken as a basis for comparing the utility of the methods.

THE structural relations existing between cuprous oxide and copper -were first systematically studied by Heyn1', who suggested that a study of the microstructure of refined copper might be substituted for the analytical methods in vogue for determining the oxygen content of copper coming from the refining furnace. Hofman, Green and Yerxa,2 in their paper A Laboratory Study of the Stages in the Refining of Copper, working along the lines suggested by Heyn, showed that a study of the microstructure could be made to yield a correct estimate of the oxygen content of the specimen of refined copper under examination. In order to determine the oxygen content of the specimen of refined copper under. examination a photomicrograph was first made. From the relative areas of copper and eutectic, the percentage of cuprous oxide and the corresponding percentage of oxygen were then readily calculated. It was found that the values for oxygen thus obtained corresponded closely with the analytical results. With the idea of utilizing this method of determining the oxygen content of each charge dipped from the refining furnaces at the Boston & Montana Reduction Plant, the physical testing laboratory was equipped with suitable apparatus for carrying out the work. It may be of interest to describe certain of the methods which have been worked out in this connection and give such data as have been obtained bearing on the effect of the oxygen content of refined copper upon its conductivity. Apparatus.-For the benefit of those who may be unfamiliar with metallographical apparatus and methods and may be interested to know what equipment is required, a few words with regard to the apparatus is in place at this point.

ALTHOUGH the refining period of the heat is generally defined as A starting after the charge has been completely melted, it may more properly be considered as beginning with the first efforts to facilitate the shaping up of the slag and the making of corrective additions for the control of slag or metal composition. Such actions may be initiated during the latter half of the lime boil. The early part of the refining period may, then, in essence overlap the latter part of the melting period. The primary aims of the refining period are to reduce phosphorus and sulphur from the steel bath to levels safely below the maximum contents specified, to eliminate carbon as rapidly as possible and still allow time for proper conditioning of the slag and attainment of the necessary bath temperature, and to deliver the heat ready for tapping or furnace deoxidation, with slag in the proper physical and chemical condition, and with carbon and oxygen contents and the temperature of the steer bath at the proper levels for the composition and grade of steel being produced. The particular conditions that fulfil these aims are distinctly different, depending upon whether the steel is to be finished according to fully-killed, semikilled, or rimming practice and also depending upon the carbon range specified. Regard- less of the type of charging practice employed, the object of the refining period is to produce repeatedly the desired finishing and tapping conditions for the grade of steel being produced. The variations and proportions of raw materials used in the charge may cause some variations in the degree of control required during refining, but not in the method of control. The refining period can therefore be discussed from a viewpoint largely independent of charging and melting practice. SHAPING UP THE SLAG In the first helper's vocabulary, refining practice consists in "shaping up" his heat. This includes elimination of sulphur, phosphorus, and carbon, putting the slag in proper condition, and adjusting bath temperature. Shaping up the slag is a major consideration because

Introduction. History and Production Statements. Southeast Missouri is the oldest of the large producing districts of the United States. The first recorded production from disseminated ores was in 1869, although for many years prior to that time lead had been milled from shallow pockets, and steady growth in production has been shown ever since, the greatest increases being during the past five years. The production by years for each of the operating companies from 1869 to 1907, inclusive, is given in Table I. In Table 11. is given the production by years from 1908 to 1912, inclusive, for the district as a whole, showing the tonnage of crude ore mined, yield in concentrates, average assay of concentrates; yield in metallic lead both per ton of crude ore and in total; also approximate value of the yearly production. It is interesting to note that the production for the 5-yr. period 1908 to 1912, inclusive, is practically equal to the total previous production, viz., the 39-yr. period 1869 to 1907, the summary being as follows:

The art of natural-gas compressing is now over 25 years old, and has grown at practically the same rate as the increase in domestic natural-gas consumers. There are now over 200 natural-gas compressing stations in North America, aggregating more than 320,000 hp. of compressor capacity and representing a property value of more than $22,000,000, and compressing more than 85 per cent. of all the gas used. The age and magnitude of the art make it evident that the use of gas compressors is a recognized integral part and universal custom of the natural-gas business. The public also is not without its rights and vital interests in this problem. Approximately 1,700,000 domestic natural-gas consumers in North America are dependent upon gas compressors for their natural-gas service. That is, if the use of compressors were to be prohibited, the majority of these consumers would be unable to secure adequate natural-gas service. Each consumer represents between four and five persons, and it therefore follows that the comfort and well-being—as far as natural-gas service is concerned—of at least 8,000,000 persons would be affected if the use of natural-gas compressors should be prohibited. These 1,700,000 consumers have invested, in services, house piping, fixtures, and appliances, an average of about $90 each, or an aggregate of $153,000,000, which is much more than the companies' investment in gas compressors. Furthermore, in all cases where the rate paid by the consumers is fair to the gas company—considering the value of the service rendered by the gas company—the consumers are entitled to continued service and protection of the investment they have made on the faith that the gas service would be continued in the future. The effect of small amounts of columbium (<0.01 to 0.10 pct) on the ?-a transformation occurring during the continuous cooling of a low carbon Ni-Cu steel was investigated. Dilatometer specimens were aus-tenitized at 950" and 1068?C and cooled at 17? and 375 C° per min. Columbium caused a marked depression in the ?-a transformation temperature except when cooling at the slower rate from 950°C. The effec of columbium on the transformation temperature was greater the higher the austenitizing temperature and rate of cooling. A maximum depression of 92 C" was observed. Metallographic examination of specimens of <0.01 and 0.07pct Cb steels heated at 1200°C for 1 hr and cooled at various rates showed that columbium had a major effect on the ferrite morphology. The fer rite in the columbium -free steel remained equiaxed at cooling rates as high as 440 C? per min while the columbium-bearing steel exhibited mixed structures o equiaxed and bainitic ferrite at cooling rates as low as 130 C° per min. The ? grain boundaries in the columbium -free steel provided the ferrite nucleation sites in rapidly cooled specimens. There was a complete absence of nucleation at these sites in the colum bium-bearing steel. It is concluded that columbium depresses the transformation temperature by suppressing ferrite nucleation at the austenite grain bound-aries. In this respect the effects of columbium are analogous to those of boron in low C-Mo steels. It is well known that small columbium additions can substantially strengthen plain carbon steels. As little as 0.02 pct Cb can increase the yield strength of mild steels by 10,000 psi.1 A fine precipitate of CbC has been observed in columbium-bearing steels2 and is generally thought to be responsible for the strengthening. Little attention has been devoted to the effect of columbium on the ?-a transformation. Webster and woodhead3 have studied the effect of columbium on the isothermal proeutectoid ferrite reaction in mild steels. They found similar transformation behavior in steels both with and without columbium additions. However, as the austenitizing temperature increased, the incubation time for the start of the ferrite transformation became longer in the columbium-containing steel. Morrison1 found that the addition of 0.03 pct Cb to a C-Mn steel lowered the transformation temperature by 50 C° during cooling from 1200°C at a rate of 80 C" per min. The strengthening effect of columbium has recently been utilized in an age-hardenable, low-alloy steel containing copper and nickel.4 A small amount of columbium has a substantial effect on the as-rolled strength of this steel. By increasing the columbium level from <0.01 to 0.13 pct the as-rolled yield strength is increased by 15,000 psi. Columbium also significantly lowers the ?-to-a transformation temperature of this steel during continuous cooling from the austenitizing temperature. Because of the low carbon level in this steel (0.05 pct max), it is almost entirely ferritic. Thus, it offers the opportunity of studying the effect of small columbium additions on the proeutectoid ferrite reaction. Of particular interest in this study was the reason for the marked lowering of the transformation temperature by columbium during continuous cooling. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. The compositions of the steels used in this investigation are shown in Table I. The steels were 30-lb air induction melts. They were forged to 4 by 8 by 1 in. plate at 1230°C, air cooled, and then reheated to 1230°C and cross-rolled in two passes to in. plates. Dilatometry. A Leitz Bollenrath dilatometer was used to record the transformation during continuous cooling from two different austenitizing temperatures. The dilatometer specimens were + in. in diam and 2 in. long. Oxidation and decarburization of the specimens was prevented by maintaining a small positive pressure of dry argon in the dilatometer furnace and by plating the specimens with 1 mil of Cu. For the lowest cooling rate, 17 C" per min, the temperature of the specimen was measured with a Pt-Pt 10 pct Rh thermocouple placed in a & in. diam well in the center of the specimen. During air cooling, 375 C° per min, this method of measuring the temperature interfered with the operation of the dilatometer. However, it was found that the temperature of the specimen could be measured accurately by placing a thermocouple in an identical specimen in a holder adjacent to the one being used to operate the dilatometer mechanism. The dilation-temperature curves were recorded on photographic film and then converted to volume percent ferrite-vs-temper-ature curves.
