WHILE the literature in the United States on general polarographic technique is extensive, very little appears to be directly applicable to the analysis of flotation tailings. For this reason, it seemed worth while to present a few polarographic methods of ore analysis that have been in constant use in the laboratories of the Hercules Experiment Station for the past few years. At the time of our initial investigation of the polarographic method, there was little or no mention of its specific application to flotation tailings. It was therefore necessary for us to establish suitable conditions for the analysis of our flotation tailings and to consider possible interfering constituents. The polarograph, or dropping mercury electrode, method was discovered in 1925 by J. Heyrovsky and M. Shikata,1 of the Charles University, Prague. This method has since received extensive development and the literature contains many articles on the use of the polarograph for the quantitative determination of metals as well as anions, oxygen in solution, and reducible organic compounds. Kolthoff and Lingane,2 by the publication of their book, "Polarography," in 1941 did much to advance the knowledge and use of the polarograph. In chapter 25 of that book, methods for the polarographic analysis of brass, steel and iron products, alloys, and zinc ore are given. Aluminum,3 cadmium,3.4 cobalt,4 copper,3-9 gold,10 iron,3,11 lead, 3,12,13 molybdenum," nickel,4.8,9 tin,15 and zinc3,4,5,7 in ores have been analyzed by the polarograph. However, most of the work on tailing samples has been published in Russian journals and translations are not yet readily available. In this paper we will describe the method that was developed and used in our laboratory for the determination of copper, zinc, and lead in flotation tailings. PRINCIPLE OF THE METHOD The polarograph is an instrument for applying a potential to a mercury pool and a dropping mercury electrode separated by a solution, and for measuring the resultant electrical current. The procedure is essentially a small-scale electrolysis, in which the voltage required to reduce or oxidize the material identifies it qualitatively and the current measures the concentration quantitatively. Different constituents in a sample may often be determined simultaneously provided they reduce at sufficiently different voltages. An example is the determination of copper and zinc in the same solution. The reduction potentials are quite far apart, as shown in Fig. I. The polarographic method is particularly useful in the range of concentration between those normally determined by spectographic and chemical methods. In

Previous work on the principles of comminution has shown: (I) that the surface produced is proportional to work input (Rittinger law,1a-3); (2) that there is regularity to the weight distribution of the fragments according to size.4-10 In this paper it is brought out that the surface on the fragments is distributed in definite and simple relation to size. The experimental work has involved: I. Construction of an apparatus capable of measuring the surface of mineral fragments independently of the chemical composition of the fragments and independently of the site of the surface; 2. Refining the methods available for measurement of particle size; 3. Designing and building a crusher capable of operating on very small quantities of mineral, if necessary on single crystals, and in such fashion as to minimize handling losses of material. Complete experiments have been carried out with massive quartz and individual quartz crystals. partial experiments, lacking surface measurements, have been made with glass spheres, galena, sphalerite, fluo-rite, salt and coal. Introduction The existence of regularity in weight distribution with size was noted many years ago, especially by A. 0. Gates;' the subject was also studied in detail by one of us.6 In the latter paper it was shown that rocks can be divided into two classes: homogeneous rocks, which show no preferential breaking, and heterogeneous rocks, which show preferential breaking at the grain size of the rock. It was shown, furthermore, that the fragments obtained by rupturing a homogeneous rock occur (in the fine range) in such abundance as to permit the writing of a relatively simple equation to relate the weight retained on a screen to the screen opening. With screens of which the openings are in constant ratio, the weight retained, w, is related to the screen size x by the equation w = Cxm [I] In this equation C and m are experimental constants. A plot of weight retained against particle size is a straight line of slope m if the scales for x and w are both logarithmic. In the fine range, the slopes of the size-distribution graphs plotted according to the method described above vary within a limited range. An inspection of a number of size-distribution data by various experimenters indicates that the slope very seldom exceeds 1.0, but is usually greater than 0.7. More recently, schuhmann8 proposed a method of charting that has so many advantages of its own that it has been used primarily in this work. THE total production of crude oil in Texas during 1924 was said to be 133,613,985 bbl. as compared with 125,991,628 bbl. in 1923.1 Subtracting from these figures the yield of the Gulf Coast fields, there remains, for the other part. of Texas, a yield of 106,272,573 bbl. in 1924, as compared with 101,931,595 bbl. in 1923. This represents an increased, production of over 4,250,000 bbl. for all of Texas outside of the Gulf Coast or Salt Dome fields. Within this same region, in 1924, there were 3624 completions, of which 2352 were oil or oil and gas wells, 7 were gassers, and 1265 were dry holes. Thus, nearly 35 per cent. of the completions were dry holes. In 1923, there were 4134 completions, with 2853 oil or oil and gas wells, 2 gas wells, and 1279, or 31 per cent. of the total, dry holes. Outside of the Gulf Coast region, six major pools were discovered and developed in 1924.; two pools, previously discovered, were extended far beyond their limits at the end of 1923, and many smaller pools were opened. The major pools were the Big Lake field, in Reagan Co., the New Richland field, in Navarro Co., the Harmel, Carey, and Ragle pools, in south Archer County, and the Wortham field, in Freestone and Limestone Counties. Fields that were notably extended were the Panhandle producing area and the Luling field. Many wildcat wells have been drilled; most -of these were failures, but several opened .pools and several have had sufficiently favorable results to. lead to further drilling. The activity of the operators in searching for new production was very intense during 1924, and indications point to as feverish a campaign during the coming year. This will be stimulated by rising prices for crude oil. There are good reasons for believing that new pools will be discovered along the Mexia fault zone, in Archer, Young, Baylor, and Throckmorton Counties, in the great central region of Texas where we now have the Mitchell County and Reagan County pools, and very likely in the eastern Red River Counties including Cooke and Grayson. On the other hand, with the opening of the year, there is no new big pool in sight. An outstanding feature of the production end of the business is the increasing reliance placed on geological work and geological recommendations. Not in five or six years has there been such a demand for first-class geologists.

Two samples of drilling mud from the Hastings oil field, Texas, were tested, and the solids in each were separated into small fractions of a limited range in particle size. The mineral composition of each fraction by X-ray analysis is reported, and the results are interpreted in relation to other measured quantities, such as the physical properties of the original samples and the density of the various fractions. It was found that only 7 to 8 per cent by weight of the solids was of colloidal dimensions and that neither of the samples contained montmorillonite but did contain illite. Considerable calcite was also found. These data should be useful to the geologist interested in the origin and history of sedimentary strata as well as to the petroleum engineer. Introduction The questions, What is good drilling mud? What constitutes bad drilling mud? are pertinent, because the proper use and control of drilling fluids has been a factor of great importance in the successful drilling and completion of oil wells since the days of Captain Lucas. Adequate control of the characteristics of drilling fluids has assumed greater significance comparatively recently because of the problems introduced by caving formations in deep wells, costly blowouts and impressive mud bills. Much is known about the solution of some of the problems but, despite extensive research directed toward a better understanding of the physical and chemical properties of clay suspensions, it is difficult to define precisely a drilling mud, and much more difficult to say what constitutes a good mud. It is generally believed that the smaller particles of a drilling mud greatly affect its physical properties. In fact, it is customary to blame the colloids in a mud for nearly everything that goes amiss, because colloidal properties have effects out of all usual proportion on viscosity, filtration rate and reaction to electrolytes. It is germane to know whether drilling muds possess colloids and if so, the quantity and kind. Source oF Samples Two drilling muds from the Hastings oil field, Brazoria County, Texas, were selected because it is generally agreed that in this oil field good natural muds made solely from formations penetrated by the drill can be used until the well is nearly ready for completion. Customary drilling procedure in this field is to spud in with water, set a protective string of pipe, drill to 2500 ft. and set the surface casing. NEW demands for underground power in the Miami mine of the Miami Copper Co., Miami, Ariz. has brought about expansion of the distribution system for both ac and dc power. Progress in mining equipment and the normal changes in the mine were responsible for this increased demand. Early power requirements were for pumping and haulage. A 440 v ac power line down No. 5 shaft took care of a small pumping load and shaft station lighting, 275 v dc power was generated by motor generator sets on the surface, with a churn drill hole from surface to the 570 haulage level serving as a cableway. Electric lights were installed where power was available, and thus were confined to the haulage level and shaft stations. All industrial power in the Miami area is 25-cycle, which dates back to the hydroelectric generator installation at Roosevelt Dam in 1908-10. The Problem The main haulage level was moved to the 720 level and later, to the 1000 level, requiring a longer feeder line with the resultant voltage drop. Also, as mining progressed to the east, the churn drill hole for the power cable would have been subjected to subsidence cracks. The first extension in the use of electricity was in electric blasting. About 1935 the mine went to electric blasting, using the dc haulage current. Bringing electric current to the working levels of the mine for blasting greatly expanded the use of electric lights. Lights were used in tool rooms, powder and cap magazines, stairways, and other semi-permanent installations. Like all mines, Miami Copper began to study and experiment with mechanical mucking and transportation of ore by slushers, shakers, and belts during the late 1930's and early 1940's. At the beginning of the program, power was supplied from the haulage level 275 v dc system. Later it became necessary to run a cable, carrying 440 v ac power, down the No. 7 ventilation shaft. The increased use of power came about gradually, and many new problems were added, not the least being the introduction of switch boards and power cables into the working areas of the mine, where drifts and crosscuts take weight, and require repairs. The 25-cycle current presented special problems, in that 25-cycle transformers are twice as large and about 2V2 times as heavy as 60-cycle transformers of the same power output. Electrical resistivity of a number of pure liquid metals and alloys has been measured as a function of temperature and composition. The data show a close correspondence between the liquid and solid states with respect to thermal, structural, and compositional relationships. STUDY of diffuse scattering of X-rays by liquid metals1 has demonstrated that some degree of order persists above the melting point and that the atomic constitution of liquids is more analogous to the solid state than to a gas. Consideration of the change in various thermodynamic properties that accompanies transformation from solid to liquid leads to the same general conclusion.² evertheless, specific knowledge of the constitution of the liquid state is limited when compared with that of the solid and gaseous states owing, in part, to the difficulty of interpreting the X-ray data and in part to the indirect character of deductions based on thermodynamic data. Of the structure-sensitive physical properties, electrical resistivity of liquid metals is perhaps the most easily interpretable, particularly when comparison is made with the solid state. According to the available data, most of which was obtained prior to 1914, cubic metals exhibit a normal linear and positive temperature dependence in the liquid state and the data have been accepted without question. The divalent metals, zinc and cadmium, are apparently exceptional in that resistivity is not linear with temperature and it passes through a minimum. Mercury also exhibits a nonlinear temperature dependence but the slope is always positive. Important comparisons with magnesium could not be made at the time the following work was undertaken because the necessary experimental data were not available. Data on liquid solutions are very limited and are largely from a single source."-" Based on Bornemann's work, Norbury7 pointed out that the resistivity of liquid copper alloys appeared to be dependent on the valence of the solute and that the increase due to the solute was of the same order as in the solid state. However, large extrapolations were involved and no quantitative relationship was developed. Therefore, before proceeding with additional deductions regarding the resistivity of liquid metals and interpretation in terms of structure, it appeared necessary to verify and extend the previous work with particular emphasis on divalent metals and the effect of alloying elements of different valence in dilute liquid solutions. The title of this paper, I understand, was suggested by professional mining engineers as an opportunity for someone to pose problems rather than to offer solutions for them, but the paper will merely attempt to pose some of the production problems of the mineral aggregates industry in such manner as to create professional interest in their solution by the mining engineer, geologist, geochemist and the metallurgical engineer versed in mineral-dressing technique. Definition of Mineral Aggregates " Mineral aggregates" may be defined as fragments of any rock or mineral used to supply bulk or volume or substance for a given purpose. For example, mineral aggregates are used in portland-cement concrete to provide bulk with the expenditure of the least feasible amount of cement binder. Mineral aggregates are used without port-land cement or bituminous binder in highway and railway roadbeds to provide substance, to carry loads. provide aggregates are used in filters for water and sewage, to provide substance for the liquid to trickle through. These are only a few typical uses of mineral aggregates. For all these uses, strength, toughness, resistance to abrasion, and durability are usually prime requisites; so, while theeretically mineral aggregates may be of any mineral composition, what really is desired is a mineral composition as nearly inert under the conditions of use as anything of earthly origin can be. Exploration and Possibilities of Development The distribution of deposits of mineral aggregate is universal, since almost any part of the earth,s crust can be used; even the top soil is sometimes used in stabilized surfacing for highways or airport runways. Nevertheless there is ample opportunity for exercise of the talents of the mining engineer and the geologist in finding the particular deposit that will be most economical to develop, keeping in mind such considerations as: (i) quality and mineralogical characteristics of the material; (2) size and permanency of the market; (3) final cost of opening and development of the deposit; (4) selection of location of plant; (5) methods and costs of distribution of the product in comparison with both present and possible future competition; (6) selection of the proper type of operating equipment; (7) estimation of probable waste products and their disposal. These are typical but there are other considerations also. Because profit margins are far smaller than in any comparable mining operation, it is all the more logical to assume that a higher degree of expert knowledge is desirable to make a success of a mineral-aggregates business. The industry has much engilleering talent in its operating branch, but it lacks, to a considerable degree, engineering talent with experience

ALLOYS with nominal composition of 45-Fe 35-Ni 20-Cr, ASTM-B-163, known under the commercial names of Incoloy 800 and Sanicro 31 (Alloy 800), are often employed at elevated temperatures for extended periods. Therefore, knowledge of the aging behavior of these alloys is of considerable importance. Significant decreases in ductility and increases in yield strength have been observed in the 45-Fe 35-Ni 20-Cr alloys containing about 0.4 pct Ti and 0.4 pct A1 after long-term aging at 540" to 700"~."~ However, no direct evidence has been presented for precipitation phenomena that might result in such changes. Strengthening effects have been attributed to the effects of local or-dering.3 Since y' precipitation (Ni3A1, Ti) is known to occur in similar alloys which contain more titanium and aluminum,4-7 it was decided to explore the possibility that y' might precipitate in these alloys and might be responsible for the changes in mechanical properties on aging. This note reports some observations of two distict types of matrix precipitates made by means of transmission electron microscopy, in a 45-Fe 35-Ni 20-Cr alloy containing 0.31 pct Ti and 0.4 pct Al. The steel used in this investigation was obtained from the Sand-vik Steel Works; it is designated Sanicro-31 (Alloy 800). The chemical composition of the alloy is given in Table I. Aging of solution-treated material at 700" and 800°C for 130 and 100 hr, respectively, produced the matrix precipitates shown in Figs. l(a) and l(b). It is apparent from these micrographs that the precipitate particles occurred in the form of thin square plates parallel to the matrix cube planes. Extraction replication and selected-area electron diffraction showed that the precipitates were M23C6. Coherency strains, consistent with the semicoherent nature of small M23C6 precipitates,' were evident for certain imaging conditions. In addition to matrix precipitation, preferential precipitation of M23C6 on dislocations was common, as has been reported previously for austenitic stainless steels.'" Specimens aged for longer times (-300 hr) at 700°C exhibited a different type of coherent matrix precipitate in addition to the M23C6. An example is shown in Figs. 2(a) and 2(b). In addition to the few large M23C6 precipitates, small precipitates exhibiting strain contrastl0,ll are present. THE results described in this article are based on field work conducted during the periods April-May, 1939, and May-July, 1940. The United States Potash Co. is mining potash on Government land under a permit from the Department of the Interior and the geophysical investigation was completed under a cooperative arrangement made between that company and the Conservation Branch of the Geological Survey. The writer, a member of the Section of Chemistry and Physics of the Geologic Branch, was assigned to this investigation. Four definite objectives were in mind for the geophysical work in the studies over the salt deposits. The first was to determine the measure of success that could be attained in this type of work with the resistivity methods that were to be employed. These methods had been introduced into the work of the Conservation Branch by Benjamin E. Jones for the investigation of dam sites, and have been used under his direction by the author for such work. If the method proved to be applicable, an effort was to be made to contour the top of the salt beds and also the other formation boundaries known to be present in this area. Salt-water aquifers were to be studied in an effort to determine their boundaries, and an attempt was to be made to delineate the potash-bearing beds. EARLIER STUDIES Others have made, and reported, resistivity studies over saliferous deposits in different areas. Friede1 and Messrs. Schlumberger2 reported geophysical work performed in the discovery of the salt domes of Alsace; Carrette and Kelly3 described the geology of the same area. Leonardon and Kelly4 published a resistivity curve obtained over the Hettenschlag dome, and a further discussion of this same area was given by the Messrs. Schlumberger5 in a communication. Messrs. Alty6 described studies on salt deposits in which the single-probe method was used. Sinerez7 mentions that electrical methods were tried over salt deposits in Spain. Geoffrey and Charrin8 show a resistivity curve obtained over marl, gypsiferous marl and salt which is similar to that obtained over the New Mexico salt deposits. Kelly9 reported resistivity work performed with the ground comparator of Zuschlag over the salt deposits near Syracuse, N. Y., where the Salina formation is at a depth of 700 to B00 ft. Some structural studies on the potash basin of Alsace are described by Poldini.10 Another single-probe resistivity study, made over salt deposits in New Mexico, is briefly described by Heiland,11 through the courtesy of Harry Aurand, of the Midwest Refining Co.

THE volume of hydrogen released from electrolytic manganese at various temperatures and pressures was determined in a previous investigation1 as part of a study to determine the most practical procedure for removing the hydrogen from electrolytic manganese metal. No attempt was made to determine the absolute volume of gas in the metal at any temperature and pressure; the volume of gas released showed only the variation in solubility with temperature and pressure. The results were very similar to those obtained by Sieverts and Moritz.2 Both sets of data show a minimum solubility between 500° and 700°C., but they differ in certain respects; on cooling from 500°C., our results showed an increase in solubility of about 7 C.C. as compared with an increase of 34 C.C. per 100 grams shown by Sieverts. Furthermore, the transition temperatures, as indicated by sharp breaks in the solubility curves, did not agree well with Sieverts' data. This information was of secondary importance in the earlier investigations, and the solubility at low temperatures and the transition temperatures were subject to considerable error. There- fore, a subsequent investigation, reported in this paper, was made to measure the absolute solubility at temperatures from room temperature through the melting point and make more accurate observations of the transition temperatures. APPARATUS AND METHOD The apparatus and method were essentially the same as those described in the previous work,1 as shown in Fig, I. At high temperatures, the small tube containing the thermocouple in the sample container A frequently broke off, so for some of this work the thermocouple was placed outside the sample container and protected by a quartz tube of about the same wall thickness as the sample container. No significant difference was found in the transition temperatures obtained in the two ways. The automatic temperature controller was used in these tests in the regions where there was little change in solubility with temperature. In the neighborhood of the transition points a continuously variable autotransformer was used instead of the automatic controller, and the power input to the furnace was adjusted so that the temperature increased or decreased at a very slow, uniform rate through the transition range. This procedure was followed because the temperature oscillations produced by the controller were too great compared with the transition range, and the transition points determined under such conditions were less accurate. RbFeF3 is a transparent ferromagnet with a large faraday rotation which permits the direct observation of magnetic domain structures in bulk crystals. If the position of dislocations within the crystal were known a study of domain wall dislocation interactions would be possible. In this paper an etch pitting solution is described which gives a one-one correspondent between the etch pits and the dislocations intersecting the (100) surfaces of RbFeF3 crystals. In addition, RbFeF3 is shown to have sufficient plasticity so that known arrays of dislocaticms can be put into the crystal. It is concluded that RbFeF, is an ideal material for the investigation of domain wall dislocation interactions. THE influence of lattice defects on the motion of domain walls in ferromagnetic materials has been studied extensively both theoretically and experimentally.4 The experimental data obtained has been qualitative in nature due to the lack either of a quantitative knowledge of the magnetic domain array in the material or of the nature of the dislocation configuration in the material. At room temperature RbFeFJ has the cubic perovskite structure. It is ferromagnetic below 86°K.5,6 It is also transparent and has a large faraday rotation in the magnetic state.7 The domain structure of this material is observable in three dimensions in crystals which are millimeters in thickness.' Since RbFeF3 satisfies the requirements of having an easily visible three-dimensional magnetic domain structure, it was of interest to determine if the dislocation structure of the material could be determined and if the material was sufficiently plastic so that dislocations could be introduced into the as grown crystals. This is a report of the results of that investigation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The crystals of RbFeFs used in this experiment were grown by a technique described elsewhere.5 In order to obtain flat strain-free surfaces, the samples were first cut to the crystal orientation desired and the surfaces were polished by employing standard metallographic techniques. The samples were then immersed in a solution of 1 to 3 g of KOH in 100 ml of water. This solution removes the damaged surface layers uniformly leaving a film on the surface of the sample. Etch pits are obtained by immersing the sample in an approximately 50-50 solution of 30 pct peroxide and concentrated acetic acid. The film formed during the KOH treatment turns deep red in color in the etching solution and flakes off the sample. The etching time required depends upon the pit size desired and

The most generally accepted equilibrium diagram for A1-Fe alloys has a eutectic system on the aluminum side with an essentially insoluble constituent of the formula, FeAl,, as the second phase. In 1938, Bradley and Taylor1 did report a phase change of FeAl,, but this change has never been confirmed. According to them, FeA1, is the stable phase only at higher temperatures; at lower temperatures, it is converted into Fe2Al7 and aluminum. It has now been found that there is, in fact, a phase change of the Al-Fe constituent on the aluminum side of the equilibrium diagram. This change, however, is not the one reported by Bradley and Taylor. The alloys used were cast by continuous processes and had these analyses: Fe - 1.98 to 2.02 pct, Cu-0.01 pct, Si - 0.01 pct, Mn - 0.01 pct, Mg - 0.00 pct, Zn - 0.00 to 0.01 pct, Cr - 0.00 pet, Ti - 0.00 to 0.04 pct. The constituent in these alloys was identified by X-ray analysis with a Guinier camera and by chemical and X-ray powder diffraction analyses. Two procedures were used to separate constituent for the last two analyses. In one procedure, it was separated by treating a sample with a solution of methanol saturated with iodine. And in the other procedure, it was separated by first applying, at 12 amp per sq ft in 15 pct sulfuric acid at 70°F, an oxide coating to a sample, and then dissolving this coating in a solution of 35 ml of 85 pct H3PO4 and 20 g of CrO3 per liter. Several observations directed attention to a phase change of the A1-Fe constituent. Differences that appeared too great to be accounted for by micro-structure alone were found in the voltages required to apply the same thickness of an oxide coating to products from rapidly and slowly chilled ingot. Even more striking was the difference in appearance of the coatings themselves. One applied to a product from a rapidly chilled ingot was dark gray in appearance, in fact, almost black, while one applied to a product from a slowly chilled ingot was essentially white. Also, even a short period of thermal treatment at an elevated temperature of products from rapidly chilled ingot led to the same anodizing behavior as that of products from slowly chilled in-

ZnxHg1-xTe and GUPxAS1-x crystals have been grown from solution by a traveling heater method (THM). In a floating zone type fashion a solution zone sandwich of liquidus composition is made to migrate through feed material of solidus composition by a slow-speed movement of <0.25 mm per hr of the total charge through a stationary radiation or rf heater. ZnxHg1-xTe of composition 0 < x < 0.3 and GUPxAS1-x of composition 0.5 < x < 0.7 have thus been grown from their solution in liquid tellurium and gallium, respectively. A simplified analysis of heat and material transport is given. In this method, Proper adjustment of the temperature distribution along the liquid solution zone axis eliminates instability of the crystal growth front and constitutional supercooling. 1) ZnxHg1—xTe: The solid-solution telluride was grown in sealed quartz tubes at a temperature of 500 to 650°C. For first Preparations mechanical mixtures SINGLE crystals of solid solutions of III-V and II-VI compounds have been grown by various techniques from the melt, from the gaseous phase, or from solutions in of ZnTe and HgTe were used. X-ray determinations showed the resulting crystals to be homogeneous throughout their entire length, except for the end sections. The homogeneity is greatly improved by reusing the ingots obtained from first Preparations as feed material in subsequent crystal growth runs. Ingots of up to 4.5 cm have thus been obtained. 2) GaPxAs1-x: Crystals were grown in a EN crucible at a temperature of 1050°C. For first Preparation a mechanical mixture of Gap and GaAs was cemented together by a minimum amount of liquid gallium through "wet" grinding of Gap and GaAs crystals in the liquid metal and subsequent exuding of excess gallium by compacting of the charge in the EN crucible. Electron microprobe measurements using P-Ka and As-Ka radiation showed uniformity over a length of 0.4 cm. Age hardening alloys are quenched from the solution treatment to room temperature in order to retain a supersaturated solid solution. Some alloys age "naturally" in this condition but in most alloys aging is induced "artificially" by heating to intermediate temperatures. Cold working of the supersaturated solid solution accelerates the aging process and quenching strains have the same effect. The investigation reported here is a study of the progress of aging in specimens quenched directly from the solution treatment to various aging temperatures. This procedure reduces the temperature interval of quenching and the resulting quenching stresses. It also eliminates any changes which would take place in the undercooled sample at room temperature prior to aging at an elevated temperature. Isothermal aging is thus approached and its kinetics may be studied. An aluminum-copper and an aluminum-silicon alloy were chosen for this investigation. The aging mechanism of aluminum-copper alloys is complex while the aging of aluminum-silicon alloys is nearly ideal. As standards of comparison for the samples directly quenched to the aging temperature, specimens were also age hardened by the usual procedure in which solution treated samples are first quenched to room temperature and then reheated to the aging temperature. Review of Previous Work The mechanism of age hardening has been the subject of a controversy which has ranged from the theory of outright precipitation of an equilibrium phase to theories based on subtle changes occurring in the matrix prior to precipitation. A detailed critical review of the literature up to 1939 is available1 and contributions to the general theory of age hardening continue to be made.2,3 Age hardening, whatever its mechanism, involves the nucleation of a second phase within a supersaturated solid solution. Theoretical considerations4,5 indicate that the rate of nucleation reaches a maximum at an intermediate temperature below the temperature at which supersaturation sets in. Studies of precipitation at various subcritical temperatures have demonstrated that the largest property changes in a given time occur at such intermediate temperatures.6,7,8 The precipitation of a phase from supersaturated solid solution is accelerated by strains which may result from quenching or cold work. Phillips and Brick9 established that quenching strains are an essential condition for the age hardening of aluminum-copper alloys at room temperature, at least for aging periods of less than 30 days. They also found that on aging at 300°C the hardness increased faster and reached a higher maximum after quenching into water than after quenching directly to the aging temperatures. Various investigations have been carried out to determine the effects of cold-rolling on the common physical properties as represented by the yield strength, tensile strength, percentage of elongation and ordinary reduction of area. Very little information is available in the literature with reference to the effects of cold-rolling on the true stress-strain properties. Since the ordinary physical properties base both the stresses and the strains on the original dimensions of the test piece, which are greatly changed during the test, they are essentially empirical values and do not represent physically either true stresses or true strains. Consequently, they do not give an accurate picture of the effects of different conditions, both mechanical and metallurgical, on the strength and ductility of the material. It is not, however, the purpose of this paper to review the various advantages accruing from the use of true stress and true strain values, since these have been shown elsewhere,1-l2 but to utilize them in representing the various effects considered. The true stress S and true strain (e = q&apos;) values mentioned above for the tension test are defined by1 S =1/A and where P, A, Ao are the axial load, the instantaneous area and the original area of cross section, respectively. From simultaneous readings of the axial load and the dimension or dimensions determining the instantaneous area of cross section, the true stress-strain curve is constructed by using the relations given in Eq. I. It is then the object of this paper to discuss the general effects of cold-rolling on the true stress and strain values for a low-carbon steel together with the effects of age-hardening and directionality on these properties. Preliminary Investigations The material considered throughout the paper is a low-carbon steel of the following chemical analysis: C, 0.19 per cent; S, 0.118; P, 0.092; Mn, 0.85; Si, 0.01. The stock was received in bars, 7 by 3/4 in., and was first annealed for one hour at 1650°F. followed by a furnace cool. Photomicrographs of this material showed considerable directionality even in the annealed condition. In view of the possible effects of the nonhomogeneity and directionality in this material, it was considered important to investigate their influence on the true stress-strain diagrams. In addition, the effect of strain-aging in this steel was also made the subject of a preliminary study. Franklin Guiterman was born March 7, 1856, in Cincinnati, Ohio, where his father, William Guiterman, was at that time engagcd in the wholesale dry-goods business. Both of his parents were natives of Bavaria, but the inspiration of America was upon them, as they gave to their son a peculiarly American name, symbolizing thrift, individualism and scientific knowledge. Franklin Guiterman received his general education in the grammar schools and the Hughes High School of Cincinnati. He finished the latter course in the early 70&apos;s of the last century, when the great demand for mining and metallurgical experts in this country naturally led his parents to direct his further studies in that direction. Accordingly, he went to Europe, and studied at the Royal Saxon Mining Academy of Freiberg, where he completed the course in 1877, at the age of 21, and returned to the United States to engage in mining and metallurgical practice. Going to Colorado, he became assayer for the Terrible mine, at Georgetown, and in 1878, for the Little Chief mine at Leadville. The position of assayer, particularly at that period and in that region, was the door to much valuable knowledge of mines and ores. Besides learning the nature and value of the different classes of ore from the mines of his own company (if he was employed by a company) the assayer, had the first chance, through his outside customers, of seeing and testing the specimens brought by prospectors, and thus learning of important new discoveries. Moreover, if he possessed metallurgical knowledge, he might advance to the position of a metallurgical manager. Guiterman stayed in Leadville four years, and during that period was assayer or chemist for several different companies. Then for about a year he superintended copper-mining operations at Hartville, Wyo. In 1884, he had charge of sampling works at Silverton, colo.—an admirable opportunity for gaining wide knowledge of the varied ores of the San Juan country. In 1885, he was Superintendent of the Mingo plant of the Pennsylvania Lead Co., at Sandy, near Salt Lake City, Utah. The foregoing list of employments, each occupying not more than a year, certainly looks like the history of a rolling stone, gathering no moss. But the cause of these frequent changes was not inefficiency in each new position. In that time and period, a man who lost his place for such a reason was not likely to get another in the same neighborhood might away. And as for gathering "moss," the kind of "moss" that

THE internal friction of nonferrous metals vibrating at low stress amplitudes has so far always been successfully interpreted in terms of inhomogeneities of one sort or another. Examples are the fluctuation of stress across a specimen vibrating transversely,1,2,3 the stress inhomogeneities due to the elastic anisotropy and partial random orientation of the individual crystallites,4,5 localized weak regions introduced by cold-working,6,7 grain boundaries and possibly twinning planes.8.9 Perfect single crystals are, by definition, homogeneous. Actual single crystals usually, perhaps always, contains some imperfections. The present investigation was undertaken to determine whether the internal friction of single crystals may likewise be attributed to inhomogeneities. This study was made possible through the gift of a large single crystal of 70-30 alpha brass by H. L. Burghoff, of the Chase Brass and Copper Co. The specimen, 3-s in. in diameter and 10 in. long, was similar to samples previously described by Mr. Burghoff.10 EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The experimental method used has previously been described in Institute papers.5,6.9 The measure of internal friction adopted here, I/Q, is (p) X the logarithmic decrement, a measure used by some writers, and is also (I/2p) X the specific damping capacity, a measure used by other writers. In all measurements the stress level was kept so low that the measurements were independent of stress level. In all measurements in which the temperature was varied, observations were made as the specimen slowly cooled from its highest temperature. The specimen was vibrated transversely. Observations were made at the fundamental frequency and at the first overtone, of about 620 and 1710 cycles per second, respectively. No attempt was made to avoid acoustical losses. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The specimen was annealed for several hours at 450°C. The temperature dependence of the internal friction was then determined from room temperature to 400°°C. As shown in Fig. i, the internal friction increased by only a factor of 2 from room temperature to 300°°C., then by a factor of 100 during the next :too&apos; interval. These measurements are consistent with the view that the observed internal friction is the superposition of two distinct parts. One, dominant at room temperature, is nearly independent of temperature. This part may be accounted for by acoustical losses and by transverse thermal currents. It was not further investigated. The second part, when plotted in the manner of Fig. I, lies upon a straight line. Therefore it has a heat of activation H; i.e., it varies with temperature as Internal friction ~ e-HI/RT [I]
