A platelet form of zirconium hydride was found in zirconium and ZY-1 wt pct U single crystals containing hydvogen in the range of 50 to 100 ppm. The habit planes for the hydride plateletg in the zirconium crystals were found to be {1012}, {1121}, and (1122) while the habit planes in the ZY-1 wt pct U crystals were {1121), {1123}, and (1.231). With the exception of the {1231} plane, these have been identified as the twin planes in zirconium. The different effect of hydridc on the mechanical puoperlies of zirconium at high and low strain rates has been explained in terms of the defornzation mechanism and the habit planes of the hydride. ZIRCONIUM and zirconium-base alloys are considered for many nuclear reactor applications, where the pick-up of hydrogen is a distinct possibility, if not an unavoidable occurrence. An excellent example of this is the absorption of hydrogen by zirconium and its alloys during aqueous corrosion, where as much as 30 pct of the hydrogen produced by the corrosion reaction is picked up by the metal. Under the proper conditions, the absorbed hydrogen would precipitate as zirconium hydride and consequently alter the mechanical and physical properties of the zirconium-base alloys. The knowledge obtained from a study of the crystallographic aspects of the hydride precipitation is necessary for the interpretation of the observed changes in the mechanical and physical properties. The deleterious effect of hydrogen on zirconium-base materials is not always observed in normal slow tensile loadings at or above room temperature, but becomes immediately obvious under impact loading, where the energy absorbed decreases with increasing hydrogen content,' and in notched specimens where triaxial loadings are attained.2 This effect is of serious consequence in the applications of Zr where shock loads or high strain rates are experienced. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the crystallographic planes of the Zr and Zr-1 wt pct U matrices upon which zirconium hydride will precipitate and to correlate these with the observed mechanical property data. PROCEDURE Crystal Growth—Single crystals of Zr and Zr-1 wt pct U alloy were used in this investigation. The Zr crystals were made from sponge that had a typical analysis as shown in Table I. Large grains were grown in this material by rapid cooling an arc-melted charge in a button furnace. This operation undoubtedly lowered the volatile impurity concentration below those listed in Table I. Back-reflection Laue patterns of these large grains showed the presence of considerable substructure and lattice distortion within each grain. It was found that an 18-day anneal in an argon atmosphere at 840°C (a high a heat-treatment) followed by furnace cooling, resulted in the further growth of the large grains and removed the detectable substructure ana lattice distortion. Equiaxed crystals with a cube edge of approximately 1/4 in. were produced in this manner. Large crystals of Zircaloy-2 (1.5 wt pct Sn, 0.15 wt pct Fe, 0.1 wt pct Cr, 0.05 wt pct Ni) also were produced by this technique but the large amount of substructure formed could not be removed by annealing. The Zr-1 wt pct U solid solution crystals were produced from an alloy rod consisting of Westing-house-Foote hafnium-free crystal bar zirconium and depleted uranium. The chemical analysis of the alloy is also given in Table I. Three-inch sections were cut from an 0.120-in.-diameter alloy rod and tapered to a fine point on each end. The samples were sealed in evacuated Vycor tubes, homogenized for 5 hr at 1000°C in the ß-phase field, and slowly lowered in a gradient furnace into the a phase (800°C), annealed for 60 hr at this temperature to produce grain growth and furnace cooled. This technique produced large grains approximately 1/2 to 3/4 in. long over the entire cross section of the rod, which were free of observable substructure. Metallographic examination up to X1000 did not show the existence of any second phase in these grains. Crystal Orientation—All crystals were abraded on fine emery paper to produce two flat surfaces 90 deg to each other. The crystals were analyzed by the standard Back-Reflection Laue technique to obtain the crystal orientation with respect to the abraded surfaces. The Back-Reflection Laue Photograms of all crystals used were clear and sharp indicating that the crystals were free from any substructure that could be detected by these means. Hydriding—Only samples containing four to five grains were used for hydriding. Samples that exhibited fine grained patches were discarded. The samples were hydrided using the following technique. Two simple types of dislocation distribution were introduced into zinc crystal specimens and the effect of each on the stress-strain curve was investigated. Quantitative results were obtained for simple edge dislocation arrays and for an array of screw dislocations lying in the slip plane. A CCORDING to present knowledge, the disloca-tions present in large annealed metal crystals can be divided into two somewhat arbitrary groups: 1—single dislocation lines distributed more or less at random or forming elements of a three-dimensional network in which the distance between adjacent dislocations is of the order of 10 2 to lo-' cm and 2— widely separated planar arrays of edge dislocations forming dislocation walls or small angle boundaries within which adjacent dislocation lines are spaced at much smaller distances (lo-' to 10- hm). The former can be considered as a dislocation interpretation of the mosaic crystal proposed by Darwin and Ewaldl, ' 40 years ago to account for anomalously high integrated intensities of X-ray diffraction maxima. Small angle boundaries, although now known to be present in most single crystals used for mechanical testing, were not generally recognized by the early workers. This was partly due to the fact that only recently have improved X-ray and metal-lographic techniques been available for checking the macroscopic perfection of crystals."" It has long been known that changes in growth conditions and in annealing procedure, which might logically be expected to cause variations in the structural details of both the dislocation network and of dislocation boundaries, produce marked variations in some mechanical properties such as yield strength." However, no quantitative experimental correlations between changes in dislocation distribution and changes in mechanical properties have yet been made. Such a correlation has been difficult to obtain because, even when great care is exercised to keep the histories of a number of single crystal specimens identical, it usually has not been possible to avoid considerable variation in macroscopic per- fection.' The number and orientation of dislocation boundaries vary from specimen to specimen. This has probably been an important contributing factor to the large scatter in the results of most mechanical measurements on pure single crystals. Some recent experiments"% ith single crystals of zinc have shown that the presence of dislocation boundaries in a specimen can increase its resistance to deformation by slip. With polycrystalline aluminum and nickel, there is also evidence that dislocation boundaries within the individual grains of the aggregate can increase the resistance of the material to plastic deformation, either as measured by tension tests at room temperature or by creep tests at higher temperatures.'" " Although the foregoing observations seem to have established the fact that substructure can have a strengthening effect, the test conditions were too complex to give much information concerning the mechanism. In the foregoing cases, a network of intersecting boundaries having various orientations and boundary angles were present. Before their apparent strengthening effect can be understood, it will be necessary to isolate and study separately the effect of a number of variables: 1—boundary angle, 2—boundary orientation with respect to the active slip direction, 3—number of boundaries, 4—intersections of boundaries, 5—detailed structure of the boundaries, and 6—interaction of impurity atoms with dislocations in boundaries. The object of the present work was to study the effect of dislocation boundaries on flow stress under the following simple experimental conditions: 1— substantially pure shear deformation and 2—boundaries of controlled angle, orientation, and number. In this way, it might be possible to distinguish the important variables from the relatively unimportant ones. THERE are three chief production zones of tungsten ore in China. In the Province of Kiangsi mines are located at Kanchow, East River, and West River. Their combined production is understood to amount to 300 to 350 tons of ore per month, and their original exportation is made through the port of Kiukiang, largely to Shanghai. The second zone is in Kwangtung Province, the mines there being at Tayulin. Produc-tion reaches about 200 tons per month and cargo is gen-erally exported through the port of Hong Kong. In the Province of Hunan approximately 25 tons of ore are produced monthly in the mines at Ton-on. Tungsten ore from Kiangsi and Kwangtung Prov-inces is generally about 70 per cent WO, (tungstic acid), while that from Hunan is of lower quality, run-ning about 65 per cent WO3. Kiangsi ore is received from the mines in 100-1b. and Hunan in 224-lb. gunny sacks. No repacking is done except as it is made neces-sary by the condition of the sacks. Kiangsi Province contains the Chinese districts pro-ducing the largest amount of salable wolframite or tungsten. Many districts west and south of Kiangsi have been found to have wolframite deposits.-Com-merce Reports.

The oxidation of lead sulfide in air between 200° and 350°C has been investigated by electron diffraction from thick sulfide films and from galena surfnces. It has been demonstrated that sulfate is the stable reaction product up to 570°C. Sulfate is HAGIHARA has investigated' single crystals of galena roasted in air by the reflection electron-diffraction technique, which owing to the very limited penetration of the beam into the crystal gives information of the nature of the surface only. He has shown that up to 280°C the first oxidation product is lead sulfate, followed by lead mono-oxysulfate (PbO . PbS04). At longer times and higher temperatures more complex patterns appeared which could not be analyzed. All of these patterns were of streaks or spots arising from crystals oriented on the galena surface, and it is probable that these crystals are lead compounds whose structures have not been determined, such as the other oxysulfates (2Pb0 • PbS04 and 4Pb0 . PbS04) or a number of oxides. Certain lead sulfide films, formed chemically, give ring patterns in transmission electron diffraction2 because they are polycrystalline, and should also give ring patterns of the products after oxidation. It was thought that a diffraction study would reveal the sequence of phases produced in the reactions at different temperatures, since X-ray powder patterns are available for many lead compounds. PREPARATION OF FILMS The films were prepared by passing H2S over a saturated solution of lead nitrate in water. Once a silvery film had formed on the solution surface, no further thickening was apparent. The films were transferred by a gauze to a bath of distilled water for washing and pieces of film were caught on small discs on which they were dried. The discs were formed initially on galena up to temperatures of 300°C, followed by oxide and oxysulfates in turn at longer times. The appearance of- these phases is believed to result from an inadequate rate of supply of sulfur to the top surface 01. the crystal. standard Siemens mounts, made of platinum alloy, and had seven 20-p apertures drilled through them. The parts of the film which had dried onto the disc surface were light blue in color, which is the interference color of a film about 600A in thickness. A strong pattern of lead sulfide was obtained in transmission electron diffraction through the apertures but slight broadening indicated a crystallite size of around 200A. Tilting a sulfide film in the beam produced arcing of the rings, increasing the intensities of the (Ill), (3111, and (222) rings and reducing (200) and (220). This arises from preferred orientation in the film, a [loo] direction of the crystallites being normal to the plane of the film. These specimens were oxidized in an oven maintained at the required temperature. The reported times include that taken to heat the film to the reaction temperature. STABLE PHASES FORMED IN OXIDATION The conditions in which various oxidation products of lead sulfide are stable have been considered by the authors in a previous paper.3 It was shown that in a normal atmosphere, taken as containing lo-' atm of SOs, lead sulfate would be stable up lo about 570°C. This was confirmed by oxidizing thin films of sulfide for several days, and the analysis of the transmission-diffraction pattern is given in Table 1. The fit with the patt$rn from X-rays is good, except for the missing 3.62A ring. Some disagreement in intensities of reflections given by X-rays and electrons is to be expected. Up to 570°C a spotty pattern of sulfate was still obtained, indicating grain growth, but above this temperature the film disintegrated. Probably this is associated with the decomposition to PbO . This paper presents the results of a complete reservoir studv designed to determine a sound economic program for the conservation of oil and gas in the Pickton field, Hopkins County, Texas. The Pickton field produces from the Bacon Lime with all indications of the study being that production is predominately by dissolved-gas drive. Calculations of the total ultimate recovery to be expected under primary operations indicated only 16.7 per cent of the oil originally in place would be recovered. This unusually low recovery is due to the type of drive operating and the extremely high dissolved gas-oil ratio and shrinkage. Results are presented for six plans of returning gas to the reservoir, evaluated to determine (1) comparative recoveries and economics of (a) returning gas at a constant rate by supplementing Pickton gas with extraneous gas during the early portion of the operation, and (b) conventional gas-return operations without using extraneous gas, and (2) the optimum size of compressor plant for each type of pressure maintenance. The over-all economic program considers, for either type pressure maintenance operation. a gasoline plant to process the unusually rich casinghead gas. Since pressure maintenance will disturb equities, pooling of royalties is in the case of Pickton a prerequisite to conservation of oil by this type of operation, both from an economic and legal standpoint. In the event pooling of royalties cannot be achieved, the study considers a gasoline plant to operate under a modified primary production operation which will make the conservation of gas possible. INTRODUCTION The Pickton field, located in Hopkins County, Texas. was discovered in November, 1944. by the completion of Humble's C. D. Nichols 1, in the Bacon lime of the Lower Glen Rose formation, through perforations from 7,888 to 7.896 feet. The well initially produced 50.2 API gravity oil with a gas-oil ratio of 1,350 cubic feet per barrel. Subsurface samples of the reservoir fluid obtained soon after completion of the discovery well showed that the Pickton crude is unique in that it has an extremely high dissolved gas-oil ratio and is subject to very severe shrinkage. Calculations of the future behavior of the Pickton reservoir indicated that ultimate oil recovery by primary operations would be 3,269,000 barrels, representing only 16.7 per cent of the oil in place (19,577,000 stock-tank barrels), and that recovery could be substantially increased by returning the produced gas. The cumulative production of 1,382,694 barrels on November 1: 1947, amounted to 42.3 per cent of the estimated ultimate oil recovery from primary operations. The purpose of this study is to determine and evaluate the optimum program for conservation of oil and gas in the Pick-ton field, including the desirability of conducting gas-return operations and of installing a gasoline plant. The same unusual grain structure, preferred orientation, and stringerlike dispersion of purticles are found in heal-ily rolled and annealed foil of tungsten which has heen doped wilh small amounts of aluminum, silicon, and polassiutvt. Both the proper dispersion of the particles and severe working (reductions in excess of 98 pct) are necessary to produce the elongzcted grain structure. RECENTLY, the author reported on the origin of the elongated or "nonsag" grain structure in tungsten foil which was doped with aluminum, silicon, and potassium.' It was observed that particles, identified as mullite (Al6Si2Ol3), were present in the doped ingot (as sintered) and at all stages of processing from ingot to sheet or wire. It was shown that the particles, being plastic at tungsten working temperatures (up to 1550"C), underwent a "stringing out" parallel to the working di-direction. It was concluded that these strings of particles were responsible for the formation of the highly elongated interlocking grains observed in doped tungsten wire or sheet. To give further credence to this explanation of a long-observed but not understood phenomenon, it was decided to design a new system, one which was analogous to the doped-tungsten system. Thus, a bcc metal, iron, was chosen to be doped with glass which would be plastic at reasonable working temperatures for iron. The glass chosen was a #0080 Corning lime glass which melts at about 810°C. This is approximately the same fraction of the melting point of iron (0.6) as the melting temperature of mullite is of tungsten. It will be shown that all the observed unusual features of the doped tungsten are duplicated in the glass. doped iron, even to the preferred orientation of the grains in the recrystallized sheet. In the tungsten sheet the preferred orientation consists of two components, (1i3)(691) and (013)(362), neither of which has been observed as a component in textures of primary recrystallized bcc metals. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The glass, in the form of fine powder, was added to high-purity electrolytic iron powder and mixed dry. The particular composition chosen was 0.007 vol fraction of glass. After mixing, the powder was mechanically pressed to a disk 0.5 in. diam and 0.15 in. thick at a pressure of 5000 psi. The pellet was sintered, in pure dry hydrogen, for 2 hr at 8 50°C. The sintered pellet was then heated to 750°C and rolled to 50 pct reduction of thickness in two passes, with reheating between passes. The rolling temperature was then reduced to 600°C and the slab was rolled to a thickness of 0.050 in. Rolling to 0.010 in. was accomplished in several passes at 300°C. Final reductions to 0.003 and 0.001 in. were taken at room temperature. This rolling temperature schedule was similar, in terms of the fraction of the melting point, to that used in the rolling of the doped tungsten. The total reduction of thickness was in excess of 99 pct. Samples of the rolled foil were lightly electro-polished and annealed for 1 to 6 hr at temperatures of 650" to 85O°C in hydrogen. Samples for transmission electron microscopy were thinned on a Disa Electropol using AC-1 electrolyte.

The author applies the theory of hydrodynamic stability to fluid flow in porous media and concludes that the displacement of miscible liquids is stable if the stability coefficient, as defined by Eq. 19.2 or Eq. 27.0, is positive. The conclusion is invalid, however, since it is based on a faulty argument. To demonstrate this, the reader is referred to Eqs. 4.1 through 4.5 of the paper which describe, in differential form, the first-order disturbances c, u, v, w and p. In these same equations, cx, cz, gl, g3 and are functions of the stable concentration c. This concentration c is known and depends on x, z and t (the author assumes cy = 0). It follows that cx, cz, gl, g3 and µ are also functions of x, z and t. With this in mind, we turn to Eqs. 8.1 through 8.5 which were derived from Eqs. 4.1 through 4.5 by substituting Eq. 6.0. The significance of this substitution is that the author thereby limits the solutions of Eqs. 4.1 through 4.5 to equations of the form of Eq. 6.0. Eqs. 8.1 through 8.5 represent an infinite linear system with five unknowns: c, u, v, w and p. The coefficients cx, cz, gl, g3 and µ in this system are known at each point and at each instant; the coefficients containing derivatives of f are unknown. If this infinite linear system in c, u, v, w and p is to have a nontrivial solution, then it is indeed necessary (as the author states) that the determinant of the coefficient matrix of Eqs. 8.1 through 8.5, i.e., ( A 1, be equal to zero. This condition, however, is not sufficient. A non-trivial solution exists if, and only if, the rank of the coefficient matrix of the entire infinite system is smaller than five. In other words. all minors of order five must vanish and only if all the coefficients in Eqs. 8.1 through 8.5 are constant is this equivalent to the condition |A| =0. Constant coefficients means that gl, g3 and µ, for instance, are constant; and, since they depend on c it follows that c must be constant. We conclude that the condition I A I = 0, on which the author bases his calculations, is necessary and sufficient for a nontrivial solution only if the concentration c is constant. In other words, the author does not investigate the stability of a miscible displacement but, rather, only the stability of the flow of a homogeneous liquid. IN the past quarter century the seismograph has played an increasingly important role in evaluating vibratory effects transmitted to adjacent communities by industrial blasting operations. In this period research has advanced through two major phases—from falling pin seismometers to three-component recording seismographs. The initial phase of this research is now regarded as the era of recording, during which the seismograph merely recorded occasional events. It has emerged from this stage into the era of control and analysis and in this later period has been recognized as a full-fledged industrial tool. Although the falling pin machines of earlier years indicated probable amplitudes of industrial blasting vibrations, they gave no reliable measure of such displacements, nor did they provide essential information concerning direction or frequency of motion. The first contribution of the three-component recording seismograph was the weight-for-distance formula developed by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. This empirical formula enabled users of commercial explosives to determine beforehand the probable vibratory effects of a blast when the weight of the explosives charge and the distance from the shot point were known. This formula has withstood the test of time and is still applicable for blasts detonated by instantaneous methods. The second major contribution of the three-component recording seismograph followed the introduction in 1945 of short period or millisecond delay detonation. This might be described as a two-stage contribution, the first of which revealed a 50 pct reduction in the vibration magnitude when millisecond detonation was used rather than instantaneous discharge. This second part of this double contribution led to the discovery of the vibration dip phenomena, see Fig. 1. In Fig. 1 the horizontal coordinates indicate the displacements amplitude in inches, and the vertical coordinates, the explosive weight in pounds. The top curve is that of the U. S. Bureau of Mines for instantaneous detonation. Its curvature conforms to the two-thirds power of the explosive weight as provided in the weight-for-distance formula; hence the vibratory effects increase in proportion to an increase in the explosive charge. If the other curves shown below are temporarily disregarded, it may be considered that the entire area below this top curve represents both useful and waste energy. As mentioned previously, when millisecond delay detonation was first investigated it was found that in general the U. S. Bureau of Mines curve could be decreased by about 50 pct, or to the position of the middle curve. At the outset it was assumed that this curve would likewise increase in some proportion to the explosive charge, as did the top curve, that is, the curve would indicate a continuous upswing. NDUSTRY needs a generally applicable means of defining average grain size and grain size distribution. Students of sediments hade explored this field, employing methods that might also prove useful in engineering problems. Before attempting to solve specific problems it is well to review the derivation of commonly used grade scales and the reasons for their selection. This aspect of the problem seems largely to have been lost, and a review of basic factors may suggest causes for failures in using size analysis data. Three facts are implicit in selection of a grade scale: 1) Most particulate mixtures are continuous distributions of sizes, and any grade scale that may be employed is an arbitrary means of visualizing that distribution. 2) For purely descriptive purposes, any grade scale, regardless of the rationality of the class intervals, will be satisfactory if it is accepted by a sufficient number of workers. 3) For analytical purposes, class intervals must be small enough to define the continuous distribution accurately. Further, where statistical studies are involved, a fixed relationship should exist between classes or grades. An argument in favor of geometrically related size grades lies in the fact that most particulate mixtures contain such a wide range of sizes that use of an arithmetic diameter scale is practically impossible. Udden, who recognized this fact in 1898,' proposed one of the first grade scales based on a regular geometrical interval. Udden used 1 mm as his basic diameter and a ratio of 2 (or 1/2) between classes. In 1922 Wentworth2 re-examined Udden's grade scale, retaining the same class interval and basic diameter, but extending the scale in both directions and renaming the classes. In 1930 (Ref. 3, p. 82) the American Society of Testing Materials proposed what is now known as the U.S. Standard fine sieve series, also based on the 1 mm diam, with a v2 ratio between sieves. This, then, is a one fourth Udden-Wentworth series in the sizes below the 4 mesh sieve. The U.S. Standard coarse sieve departs from the 1 mm base and uses inches; hence it is not a direct continuation of the fine series. The U.S. Standard series would thus seem to possess all the attributes of a good grade scale, which it is. It has a large number of classes (sieves). in fact too many for practical use in its entirety. This v2 subdivision of the Wentworth grades has led to the common use of two v2 sieve series, the half-Wentworth and the engineers' series. Geologists and sedimentologists favor the half Wentworth, or 18, 25, 35, 45 sieves, etc., whereas the engineers, preferring round numbers, utilize the other half of the U.S. Standard grade scale in the 16, 20, 30, 40 sieves, etc. The fixed geometrical ratio between classes is an advantage in statistical analysis, but the unequal classes cause some complications in calculations. This is especially true when moment measures are used. It was to simplify these calculations that Krumbein in 1934 devised the phi scale. Phi is defined as being equal to —log2 of the diameter in millimeters. Selection of logarithms to the base 2 relate the phi scale directly to the Wentworth grade scale in such a manner that the whole or fractional diameter values 2, 1, 1/2, 1/4 mm, etc., become rational whole numbers, —1, 0,1, 2, etc. Since this is an arithmetic rather than geometric series, calculations are facilitated. When the logarithm is multiplied by —1 the phi values below 1 mm become positive, those coarser than 1 mm negative. Because of its relationship to the Wentworth grade scale (and in turn to the U.S. Standard fine sieve series) it is not necessary to use the transformation equation to calculate the phi value for each individual sieve; this can be done graphically as shown in Fig. 1. It should be noted that this graph may be extended in either direction to include the range of sizes most commonly used by the individual worker. Application to Statistical Analysis Any attempt at systematically relating size analysis data to properties involves a statistical study whether it is recognized as such or not. Since this is true it would seem more logical to use measures and devices related to the general body of statistical theory. Several methods are available for studying particulate mixtures. One of the most commonly employed, and also the most often misused, is the histogram or block diagram. If its limitations are recognized and provided for, the histogram is a very useful tool. According to conventional practice, the bars of equal width are plotted and the values noted in terms of diameters, when in point of fact, log diameter is implied by such notation. Further, the histogram is sensitive to choice of grade scale and size of class interval, either of which may color the result. Grade scales whose classes are not related by fixed intervals are particularly difficult. Another basic weakness of the histogram is that it pictures a continuous distribution as a series of discrete grades.

TOTAL DIRECT IMPACT The uranium mining industry's principal economic impacts on the Texas economy are the result of three flows of money from the industry into the remainder of the state's economy. These three are: (1) money paid to individuals (personal income) ; (2) money paid to other businesses (business income); and (3) money paid to state and local governments (government revenues). As these direct payments from the uranium industry to various other sectors of the Texas economy subsequently circulate and recirculate within the state, the indirect effects of uranium mining's direct impacts multiply to reach amounts significantly higher than the direct income flows alone. Over the past decade, the uranium mining industry has substantially increased its role as a provider of jobs, personal income, business income, and government revenues in Texas. The growth has come almost exclusively in a largely rural, seven-county area that lies within the triangle formed by the Laredo, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi metropolitan areas. The uranium mining industry, in fact, has been the major dynamic element in this rural area despite relative stagnation in most of the region's other basic economic sectors. Over the three years from 1976 to 1978, the South Texas uranium mining industry directly contributed a total of $115 million to the economy of the seven- county region in which it operated and $164 million to the economy of the entire state of Texas. In 1979 alone, the total direct contribution of the industry to the Texas economy had climbed to $124 million in personal, business, and government income. PERSONAL INCOME IMPACT In the period from 1976 through 1978, the South Texas uranium mining industry provided an average of $12.5 million in personal income each year directly to residents of Atascosa, Bee, Duval , Karnes, Live Oak, McMullen, and Webb counties -- the seven Texas' counties that make up the South Texas Uranium Belt. A1 though 84 percent of this resulted from the employment of area residents in uranium industry jobs, some amounts were also provided by the payment of rents and royalties to land owners for the use of their land and mineral rights in uranium mining operations. In 1979, the uranium industry provided approximately $38 million to residents of the Uranium Belt and the rest of Texas. This was more than double the average of $16.1 million provided to Texas residents during the 1976 to 1978 period. The full importance of the uranium industry as a source of personal income, however, should not be reckoned merely by the amount of wages and salaries that it pays directly to its own employees, nor by its rent and royalty payments paid directly to land and mineral rights owners living in Texas. The added payments that the industry makes directly to other Texas businesses and state and local governments in Texas are themselves converted into personal income as those business firms and government units in turn pay their employees. All of the direct income payments made by the uranium industry circulate and recirculate within the state's economy, multiplying their impact as they go, until they eventually all leak out of the state as federal taxes or as payments to individuals or businesses located outside of Texas. The combined circulation and recirculation of the direct personal, business, and government income that was provided by the-uranium industry in Texas during 1976, 1977, and 1978 resulted in an average annual amount of indirect personal income of more than $83 mill ion. This alone was $20 mill ion more than the industry's average annual sales during the same years. The total of combined direct and indirect personal income contributed to the Texas economy by the uranium mining industry in that same three-year period thus averaged almost $100 million annually. In 1979, the amount of indirect personal income contributed to the Texas economy by the circulation of uranium mining's direct contributions had risen to about $196 million, more than double the average of the previous three years. The combined direct and in- direct personal income impact in 1979 thus amounted to $234 million. BUSINESS INCOME IMPACT The income provided directly to other Texas business firms through the purchase of needed goods and services by the uranium industry has been twice as big as the industry's payrolls. In 1976, 1977, and 1978, the South Texas uranium industry spent an average of almost $36 million each year to buy both goods and services from other Texas businesses. By 1979, this direct contribution to the Texas economy had swollen to $76 million. The biggest share of the uranium industry's payments to other businesses have gone to contracting firms, including both construction firms and those providing specialized mining services. In the past four years, about 40 percent of the direct payments made by Texas uranium producers to other Texas firms have been to contractors. Texas wholesale and retail firms have also shared in the business sales provided by the South Texas uranium mining industry. Over the past four years, Texas wholesale and retail trade businesses have accounted for about 34 percent of the uranium mining industry's purchases from other Texas businesses. Public utilities firms have received another six per- cent, while Texas manufacturers and transportation firms have accounted for about five percent each. The peninsula of Florida is remarkable for the uniform character and simplicity of its geological structure. Major Henry Whiting, of the U. S. Army, was one of the first to give an account of the physical features and rocks of Florida, in an article published in 1839, in the American Journal of Science (vol. xxxv., p. 47). He says: " The rocks found in situ are all calcareous, though siliceous boulders are occasionally seen, and nodules of hornstone are here and there mingled with the limestone, which elicit sparks and are sometimes used by the Indians for flints."

Results of large-scale mining experimentation carried on in Stage II of the Anvil Points Oil Shale Research Program, Rifle, Colo., are reported. After a new adit was excavated, over 500,000 tons of oil shale was extracted during a 13-month period by a modified room and pillar method. Experiments in drilling and blasting headings, benches, and crosscuts are reported. Roof-bolting procedures, loading and hauling, and ventilation design are discussed. Results of the extensive investigations carried out by the cooperative industry group and earlier work by the U.S. Bureau of Mines indicate that mining oil shale is technologically feasible.

Recently the U.S. Bureau of Mines has undertaken a research project to develop the mechanical roof pulling technique as a method for evaluating the effectiveness and the comparative advantages and disadvantages of various roof bolting systems for underground coal mines, based on the characteristic responses of bolted mine roofs to a prescribed external loading system. Two preliminary experiments of the test method were conducted in the Bureau's Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) at Bruceton, Pa., and further trials are underway. Chemistry of uranium with respect to its hydrometallurgical recovery from carnotite ores was investigated and well defined during the radium boom period between 1900 and 1920. Since that time, methods used to extract uranium from its ores have remained basically either acid leaching or sodium carbonate leaching. Until about 1950, the only practical methods known for achieving a better than 75 pct U2O3 concentrate from the leach liquors involved fundamental chemical techniques for either purifying a solution prior to the uranium precipitation, or refining a crude uranium concentrate that was produced by neutralizing a pregnant mill liquor.
