A combination of a slurry trench with dewatering successfully controlled groundwater for a large sloped excavation immediately adjacent to the Arkansas River. The Murray Hydro Electric Project required excavation through sand and gravel to bedrock, 85 feet below high water in the River. The perimeter system of deep wells pumping up to 25,000 GPM (1,600 1/sec) lowered the water level to 15 feet (4.6 m) above bedrock. A short soil/bentonite slurry trench near the toe of the slope cut off the residual head. The method cut six weeks from the critical path. Design of the slopes and the dewatering system demanded high safety factors because of risk to existing Lock and Dam No. 7. A localized pocket of soft organic clay was supported by a rock filled bolster. A major flood event was successfully withstood. The method can be applied to large civil excavations and open pit mines.

Introduction Before examining the current position of the asbestos industry and its market outlook, it is important to describe the product itself. If we are to understand the problems besetting this basic mining and manufacturing industry, and, more importantly, if we are to appreciate solutions to these problems, we had better view asbestos from the proper perspective. Asbestos has a unique combination of properties - properties not found in any other natural substance or man-made material. As a result, asbestos has found its way - in fact, is welcomed - into hundreds of applications. Properties and Products World production capacity of asbestos fiber is about 6.5 Mt (7.2 million st). Major producers and their approximate percentage share of actual production are: USSR, 47%; Canada, 24%; South Africa, 5%; Zimbabwe, 5%; Brazil, 4%; Italy, 3%; and others (including the US, China, and Greece), 12%. In 1993, the United States' economy grew at a rate of about 3%. The Gross Domestic Product rose to $6.4 trillion. With more than 258 million people - 599,000 in mining including petroleum - the United States has more than 100 million dwelling units and more than 190 million licensed motor vehicles. New private housing starts rose 7% to 1.3 million units, new car production fell 3% to 5.5 million units and truck and bus production rose 21 % to 4.9 million units. The rate of inflation was under 3% and the prime rate of interest 6%. The Producer Price Index (1982 = 100) was unchanged from 1992 for fuels and re¬lated products and power at 80 and met¬als and metal products at 119, while chemicals and allied products rose 2% to 128 and non-metallic mineral prod¬ucts rose 2% to 120. The merchandise trade deficit rose 27% to $116 billion.

A coal mine study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a compressed-air, foam spray system installed under a continuous miner boom and directed to cover the pan and the gathering arm. The study's objectives were to evaluate the foam, underboom sprays' effect on: • the respirable dust concentration in the ambient air, and • the quartz concentration in the airborne, respirable dust. The foam generation and delivery system's engineering design is described in the paper, followed by descriptions of the mine and the dust sampling strategy. The data were analyzed to study the foam's effects on respirable dust and quartz concentrations at the continuous miner cab, the face return and the intake. The data indicate reductions in the dust's quartz content, ranging from 19.7% to 64.6%, in eight of 11 comparisons of the foam vs. no foam cuts. In addition, airborne intake dust reductions were observed in eight of 11 comparisons.

The zeolites review arrived too late for the June issue. The natural zeolite industry continues to grow even as some companies look for the exits. Production for 1993 was estimated at between 42 and 44 kt (46,000 and 48,000 st). That is between 7 and 9 kt (7700 and 9900 st) above 1992 production. GSA Resources, Saint Cloud Mining, Steelhead Specialty Minerals, Teague Minerals, UOP and Zeotech all reported continued growth last year. At the same time the East-West Minerals' Eastgate mordenite mine, and American Resources' Ash Meadows clinoptilolite operations both shut down their processing plants and are attempting to sell the mines and facilities. In addition, Tenneco Minerals continued its attempt to sell the Mud Hills clinoptilolite deposit. Unimin entered the natural zeolite industry through its acquisition of several properties of Aimcor. The Snow Caps mine was an open pit and conventional cyanide heap leach gold project located 10 Km east of Independence, California in the Owens Valley. The project is unique in that it is one of the first projects to go full-cycle, from design through closure, under California's Chapter 15 mine waste regulations adopted in 1984. The property was acquired by Sunshine Mining Company in 1985. During 1986, final design and permitting were completed and the facility was commissioned in 1987. Mining continued to mid - 1990, when the minable ore body was depleted, and heap leaching continued into early 1991. Rinsing of the spent ore was completed in 1991, and final closure will be complete in 1992. The spent ore will be left on the leach pad for its final disposition. The focus of this paper is the permitting and closure aspects of the project as required by California's Chapter 15, Article 7 regulations.

Refractory gold ore pretreatment processes continue to receive much attention. This paper compares the relative economics of treating ores by oxygen pressure oxidation, roasting and bacterial oxidation with or without preconcentration by froth flotation. Capital and operating cost estimates for each method of pretreatment were prepared and these estimated costs and ore sulfide grades then are used to compare the process economics. The study indicates that the most significant item affecting the economics is the amenability of the ore to flotation. The cost benefits of flotation are $10-13 per tonne ore processed (2%-4% s=, 10:1 ratio of concentration). In most cases bacterial oxidation has the lowest overall cost, especially if less than complete oxidation of the sulfides will give acceptable recovery, however bacterial oxidation has yet to be practiced on a large scale. In all situations pressure oxidation shows the highest cost. However, the cost differences between the treatments are small, less than $7 per tonne.

Gold Fields-Mesquite is a 7.5 million ton per year heap leach operation located in the Maj ave Desert of Southeastern California. Extraction of gold is carried out on multiple lifts, with over 33.3 million tons of ore leached since the inception of operations in 1985. The delineation of the gold left in heap residue is a formidable task. Gold removed from active leach areas can be routinely monitored through sampling of emerging solutions but exact recoveries from specific heaps remains nebulous due to factors such as cross flow between sections buffering effects from multiple lifts, and releaching. In order to better quantify ultimate heap recoveries and increase releach efficiency, Mesquite initiated a residue drilling program. The project progressed through an evaluation of sampling protocol, drilling of residue by reverse circulation, entry of assays into a software package capable of producing grade-based contour maps, and a production scale releach test that evaluated the system's ability to predict residue grade.

Surface mining of multiple seams by mountaintop removal and contour mining is complex in Appalachia. Arch of West Virginia, a division of Apogee Coal, has made its operations state-of-the-art to cope with this challenge. Arch of West Virginia moved into the heart of coal mining in Appalachia when Arch Mineral acquired coal reserves and coal operations in the southern West Virginia counties of Logan and Wyoming. These reserves were initially developed at the turn of the century as underground operations. Today, though, they are mined using mountaintop removal and contour mining. The steep slopes in the mountains of Appalachia generated a method of mining referred to as contour mining. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, contour mining was introduced at these operations using front-end loaders with bucket capacities of more than 7 m3 (10 cu yd) that could load 45-t (50-ton) end-dump trucks.

A thorough Life Cycle Assessment of ilmenite extraction and processing to yield synthetic rutile (ERMS/EARS process) was performed according to ISO norms 14040 and updates. The LCA includes the parallel application of selected environmental impact assessment methods (as illustrated in Ulgiati et al. [1]), the results of which are compared and discussed. A MI value of 16 kg of abiotic matter per kg of output rutile is calculated, which is largely determined by the amount of coal that is employed in the reduction and drying steps. The Gross Energy Requirement is 3.33 * 107 MJ/kg, a value which we found to be comparable with that previously calculated by us for alumina. Finally, the increase factor of the Emergy Intensity from the raw mineral to the marketed rutile is 3.19, which points to a comparatively medium-low requirement for indirect environmental support. GWP and AP were calculated to be respectively 1.89 kg(CO2eq)/kg and 12.7 g(SO2eq)/kg.

For a Colorado mountain quarry, the Water Jet Channeling Method is far superior to Burning, Sawing, Drilling, or Shooting with Primer Cord, Water, or Black Powder. Throughout the life of our quarry, which was founded in 1947, we have used all the methods and turned to the Water Jet Channeler, which we invented and patented as our ideal way to remove dimension granite from our quarry. We jet the block on 4 sides and remove the block with plugs and feathers on the backside. The Water Jet uses approx 7.5 l/m (2 gpm) running at310,000 kPa (45,000 psi) to erode the crystals @ 1sm/h (10sf/h).The 0.533mm (.021”) nozzle oscillates back and forth to achieve an approx 5cm (2”) channel. Using the Jet, we do not lose corners or cause cracks in our red fine grain light class 5 granite.

The Coteau Properties Co.'s Freedom Mine is a surface lignite mine that uses large draglines, trucks and shovels, tractor-scrapers and bulldozers to uncover a single coal seam. In 1989, a work order system was instituted to record data by equipment type, cost, productivity and distance. The system was also used to provide historical information to plan the most efficient and economic use of each equipment type in the mining operation. The Coteau Properties Co. is a wholly owned subsidiary of The North American Coal Corp. The company was formed in 1972 to supply lignite from its Beulah-Hazen coal reserve to a coal gasification project and an electrical generating facility located near Beulah, ND. The reserve consists of a single coal seam between 3 and 7 m (10 to 23 ft) thick. The overburden above the coal is predominately glacial tills and clays and ranges from 6 m (20 ft) to more than 60 m (200 ft) thick.

It is agreed in mining and regulatory circles that a safe and healthy working environment for underground miners is the major challenge for mine operators. Underground mine ventilation is complex. And it is becoming even more difficult as mines become larger, deeper and more complicated. At the Seventh US Mine Ventilaton Symposium, a group of mine ventilation experts from industry, government and academia attempted to solve some of the problems in ventilating underground mines. The meeting, sponsored by the Underground Ventilation Committee of SME and the University of Kentucky, was held in Lexington, KY June 5-7, 1995. Andrzej M. Wala, symposium chairman, commented that previous mine ventilation symposiums have focused mainly on work in North America. The 1995 symposium, however, broadened its borders to include several international papers. Of the 77 papers presented and bound into the Proceedings volume, 25 are from operations and research centers outside of the United States and Canada.

CRYSTALLIZATION from aqueous solution is a simple and old method for the recovery of metal values from leach solution. Practically all the methods for the recovery of aluminum from clay are based on the crystallization of an aluminum salt from the leach solution. Differences in solubilities may be used to advantage for separating two metals from the same leach solution. The classical method of Marignac (1866), which makes use of the difference in solubilities of K2TaF7 and K2NbOF5 to separate niobium from tantalum, has been used successfully in the manufacture of these metals (Fig. 10-1). The slurry containing the metal oxides is dissolved in 70 % hydrofluoric acid, diluted, and heated near boiling. A potassium salt is added in sufficient quantity to form the complex fluorides of the niobium and tantalum present. The solution is filtered and allowed to cool. At room temperature most of the tantalum salt crystallizes out while the niobium remains in solution.

In 1967, development of the Cyprus Thompson Creek molybdenum deposit began near Challis, ID. The first mining claims were staked on an intrusive rock out-crop. Exploration continued for 14 years. In 1978, the decision was made to develop the deposit. In Dec. 1980, approval was received for the environmental impact statement and facilities construction and waste rock removal began. By the middle of 1983, 126 Mt (139 million st) of rock had been removed and all facilities completed. Location The Thompson Creek project is located about 58 km (36 miles) southwest of Challis in Custer County, in south central Idaho. The mine and mill are situated between 2.2 and 2.6 km (7,217 and 8,530 ft) in elevation. The project is located in an isolated area. "Tests were conducted to determine properties of 4 foam agents for their potential use in longwall mining dust control. Foam has been tried in underground mining in the past for dust control and is currently being reconsidered for use in underground coal longwall operations in order to help those operations comply with MSHA’s lower coal mine respirable dust standard (1.5 mg/m3). Foams were generated using two different methods. One method used compressed air and water pressure to generate foam, while the other method used a low pressure air generated by a blower and water pressure using a NIOSH developed foam generator. Foam property tests comprising of a bottle shake test, foam expansion ratio, and water drainage were used to classify foams. The bottle shake tests determined that the lowest concentration of foam agent to be used was approximately 1.5%. Compressed air generated foams tended to have low expansion ratios (10-19) with high water drainage. Blower air generated foams had higher foam expansion ratios (30-60) with lower water drainage. Foams produced within these ranges of expansion ratios are stable and potentially suitable for dust control. The different foam agents produce foams with different material properties. Results of testing eliminated two foam agents for future testing because they had poor expansion ratios. The remaining two foam agents, while having different foam properties, seem to have properties adequate for dust control. These material property tests can be used to classify foams for their potential use in longwall mining dust control. INTRODUCTION About one-half of U.S. underground coal is produced by longwall mining. This technique allows for mining high volumes of coal, producing significant amounts of coal mine dust. This can lead to the overexposures to longwall miners and possibly occupational respiratory diseases black lung and silicosis, which have no cure and can be disabling or fatal. The only method to avoid these occupational illnesses is through elimination of exposure to respirable coal mine dust and crystalline silica (quartz). The current occupational exposure limit for respirable coal mine dust is 1.5 mg/m3 during each shift that a miner is exposed in the active workings of the mine or in mine facilities [1]. When respirable quartz is present, the mine must maintain an average concentration at or below 0.1 mg/m3. If the mine exceeds the 0.1 mg/m3 respirable quartz dust concentration, then the applicable respirable dust standard is reduced, calculated as 10 divided by the percent quartz present [2]. Respirable dust samples collected by U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration inspectors for the five-year period from 2010 to 2014 found that 5.6% (53 of 943 respirable coal mine dust samples) of the longwall operators on the tailgate side exceeded the coal mine dust standard, and 4.3% (76 of 1768 samples) of the jacksetters exceeded the standard. If silica is present, the reduced standard is implemented, meaning that 11.4% (36 of 316 respirable coal mine samples analyzed for dust) of the jacksetters exceeded the reduced standard. Only 3.8% (18 of 478 samples) of the longwall operators on the tailgate side exceeded the reduced standard [3]. Had the 1.5 mg/m3 standard been in effect during this period, non-compliant samples would have been much higher. For example, over 15% of the samples collected at the tailgate shearer operator occupation exceeded the lower standard."

"NIOSH’s mine fire simulation program, MFIRE, is widely accepted as a standard for assessing and predicting the impact of a fire on the mine ventilation system and the spread of fire contaminants in coal and metal/nonmetal mines, which has been used by U.S. and international companies to simulate fires for planning and response purposes. MFIRE is a dynamic, transient-state, mine ventilation network simulation program that performs normal planning calculations. It can also be used to analyze ventilation networks under thermal and mechanical influence such as changes in ventilation parameters, external influences such as changes in temperature, and internal influences such as a fire. The program output can be used to analyze the effects of these influences on the ventilation system. Since its original development by Michigan Technological University for the Bureau of Mines in the 1970s, several updates have been released over the years. In 2012, NIOSH completed a major redesign and restructuring of the program with the release of MFIRE 3.0. MFIRE’s outdated FORTRAN programming language was replaced with an object-oriented C++ language and packaged into a dynamic link library (DLL). However, the MFIRE 3.0 release made no attempt to change or improve the fire modeling algorithms inherited from its previous version, MFIRE 2.20. This paper reports on improvements that have been made to the fire modeling capabilities of MFIRE 3.0 since its release. These improvements include the addition of fire source models of the t-squared fire and heat release rate curve data file, the addition of a moving fire source for conveyor belt fire simulations, improvement of the fire location algorithm, and the identification and prediction of smoke rollback phenomena. All the improvements discussed in this paper will be termed as MFIRE 3.1 and released by NIOSH in the near future INTRODUCTION The MFIRE program, originally developed in the 1970s by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (now the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)) and Michigan Technological University, has been a mainstay in modeling of the mutual influences between a fire and the mine ventilation system during an underground mine fire. Several update versions have been released over the years, including MFIRE 1.27, 1.29, 1.30, 2.0/2.01, 2.10, and 2.20. The MFIRE program logically comprises four parts: (1) a conventional network calculation, where it performs the basic network balancing without considering heat or mass transfer; (2) a temperature calculation to establish the reference temperature distribution before a non-steady state (transient-state) simulation; (3) a transient-state simulation that follows changes in ventilation step-by-step to produce a continuous description of the temperature distribution, smoke, and contaminant spread through the ventilation system during a fire event; and (4) a quasi-equilibrium simulation to predict the state of the ventilation system after a relatively long period of time (defaulted as 5 hours in MFIRE) as the fire reaches a quasi-steady state. In summary, MFIRE is a computer simulation program that performs normal ventilation network planning calculations and dynamic transient-state simulation of ventilation networks under a variety of conditions including the influence of natural ventilation, fans, fires, or any combination of these (Chang et al., 1990)."

INTRODUCTION Generations of tunneling engineers had to fight not only against bursting rock and squeezing ground but also against the destroying power of water. Intrusion of groundwater into the tunnel opening affects the stability of the tunnel support system, reduces the safety of the traffic inside the tunnel, induces corrosion of installed equipment, and provides for creeping currents at electric facilities. Aware of these problems, engineers of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and their consultants opened the way for a new approach in sealing a tunnel. It was made possible by accepting a new method of tunnel construction scarcely applied in the U.S. before. This new technique, the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), provided the basis for the successful installation of a PVC-membrane between two separated shells of tunnel lining, and the carefully directed drainage of groundwater. Beside of the economic benefits already attained by applying the NATM for tunnel construction, the Authority now saves millions of dollars otherwise necessary to maintain the tunnel during its lifetime (Garrett, 1986; Setzer, 1986). But there is a large number of leaking tunnels built according to conventional methods, some of them facing severe problems jeopardizing the safe utilization of these structures. Recently developed methods indicate that even those tunnels can be rehabilitated without extensive costs by draining and sealing them afterwards. A road tunnel in the Austrian Alps provides the scene for a major attempt to convert one of those leaking tunnels into a dry structure.

Preliminary figures from the US Mine Safety and Health Administration show 801 underground metal mines and 490 surface metal mines, at the end of 1981, up from 663 and 383, respectively, in 1980. Preliminary MASH figures also show 207 underground nonmetal mines and 1070 surface nonmetal mines at the end of 1981, compared with 167 and 1092, respectively, last year. In addition, preliminary MASH figures show there were 14,676 mineral extraction operations on the surface and 3845 underground at the end of 1981, versus 14,951 and 3675, respectively, for last year. The number of mines, then, in three of four categories increased significantly, while having a lower net total of just 2% in the other category. And the number of underground extraction operations increased nearly 5% for the year, while surface operations were down less than 2%. But despite operations totals that mostly held their own or showed significant increases, it was a tough year for the nation's mining industry. The nonferrous segment of the industry had a bad year and 1982 may be no better, according to Business Week (Jan. 11, 1982), which adds that a turnaround is impossible unless the general economy recovers. Even then, with diminishing markets and overcapacity plaguing its products, the mining industry's condition "will be far from robust," the magazine says. The basic problem is that nonferrous metals-aluminum, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, and zinc-are tied to the most troubled sectors of the US economy. As recently as 1979, for example, more than 40% of all aluminum shipments went to the construction and transportation industries. Last year, these markets were down to 35% of aluminum shipments. And molybdenum sales to steel producers dropped by nearly 15% last year. Moreover, nonferrous products ended 1981 at disastrously low prices. Molybdenum oxide sold at $8.77/kg ($3.98/lb), half its $17.63/kg ($8/lb) price earlier in 1981 and aluminum was listed at $1.08/kg ($0.49/lb), compared with $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) a year earlier. The Comex price of copper was $1.54/ kg ($0.70/lb), down from $3.11/kg ($1.41/lb) in early 1980, in real terms the worst copper price in 30 years. Lower prices led operators to cut their output and increase layoffs, shut down mines, and defer capital spending projects. In December, Duval Corp., a Pennzoil Co. subsidiary, shut all four of its US copper mines until March. Aluminum Co. of America had laid off 7.3% of its work force, shut nine of its 38 smelting lines, and entered 1982 operating at only 68% of capacity. Inco Ltd., the Free World's largest nickel producer, lost money in 1981, an estimated $11 million, for the first time since 1932. And, like Falconbridge Nickel Mines and other major nickel producers, had cut back on nickel production and was operating at only 63% of capacity (Forbes, Feb. 15, 1982). Amax, the country's largest molybdenum producer, had cut production by 20%. And Hanna Mining Co. sold lead for $5.07/kg ($2.30/lb), about $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) below what it cost to produce. Another problem is that copper companies in the next few years must come to terms with problems of aging smelters. Some companies are simply closing them. In 1980, Anaconda closed its 75-year-old Butte, MT, smelter and is shipping concentrates to Japan, rather than modifying the smelter to meet environmental requirements. And oth Phelps Dodge Corp. and Asarco Inc. have antiquated smelters on which they will have to make decisions. The most troubled metal in 1982, Business Week said, will be molybdenum, with no real recovery in sight until the mid-1980s. High molybdenum prices in the late 1970s, caused in part by shortages, triggered overexpansion that will take years for the US market to soak up. On a more upbeat note, 1981 mergers might help stabilize the industry by providing funds for mining companies. Standard Oil Co. (Ohio) said it plans to spend $7 billion on Kennecott during the next 10 years for modernization and expansion. And Atlantic Richfield Co. said it will spend $500 million on Anaconda Copper Co. during the next five years. Another positive note was sounded by T. H. Adams of the United Banks of Colorado Inc. He said he expects the mining industry to experience moderate growth in 1982, led by "interest rate sensitive" demand from energy, electronics, and defense markets. And mining will be helped by "weak, but improved" construction and auto markets. The mining industry will be operating in an economy stronger than 1981, but still relatively sluggish by postwar standards, Adams predicted. Iron Ore Estimated US iron ore production in 1981 was 75.2 Mt (74 million long tons), up 6% from 70.7 Mt (69.6 million long tons) in 1980, though down from the 87.1 Mt (85.7 million long tons) produced in 1979. The mine value of usable iron produced from domestic mines was estimated at $3 billion. US iron ore was produced by 28 companies operating 35 mines, 26 concentration plants, and 16 pelletizing plants. The mines included 34 open pits and one underground mine. INTRODTUCTION The use of spiral concentrators for processing fine coal particles is an old idea that has recently gained acceptance in the 11.S. coal industry. It was not onti1 the Australian Minerals Industry developed a spiral concentrator specifically for separating coal from ash in the latter 1970's and early 1980's that spiral concentrators were seriously considered as viable equipment for processing fine coal. The Wright Coal Spiral was introduced in 1980, the Mineral Deposits Limited Mark 10 Coal Spiral was introduced in 1982, and the Vickers Wyong Coal Spiral was introduced in the latter part of 1984. Each spiral design was different and utilized constant profile troughs, constant pitch troughs, compound profile troughs, and various splitter arrangements. Mineral Deposits Limited has combined the best features of the compound profile trough and constant pitch trough with critically-placed splitters to develop the MDL LD4 spiral concentrator which is a truly efficient coal washing spiral. This spiral concentrator was introduced into the U.S. Coal Industry in 1987. Recently, Mineral Engineering Technology of the United Kingdom and Multotec of South Africa have introduced their own coal spiral designs. Spiral concentrators were first installed in fine coal processing circuits in the Australian, South African, and Canadian Coal Industries in the early 1980's and in the U.S. Coal Industry in 1985. SPIRAL CONCENTRATOR SEPARATION PROCESS The separation process that occurs within the spiral concentrator trough is very complex, as it is a combination of three gravity separation processes. When the coal slurry first enters the spiral trough, each coal and ash particle and the water is subjected to centrifugal forces. These forces cause the water, light coal particles, fine heavy ash particles, and medium middlings particles to the outer vertical portion of the spiral trough. The coarse ash particles and the coarse middling particles remain on the inside of the spiral trough. The center or transitional area of the trough contains a mixture of middlings particles and near-gravity material that is present in the slurry, as shown in Figure 1. At the same time the coal and ash particles are suhjected to centrifugal forces, the trough design (both profile and pitch) causes the particles to be subjected to flowing film and stratified bed separations. The combination of these three separations, whose efficiency is dictated by the spiral troogh design, will effect the separation of the lighter coal particles from the heavier ash and middlings particles. As the slurry flows down the spiral, the profile and pitch design of the trough will counteract the centrifugal forces on the fine, heavy ash particles and fine middlings particles and cause them to migrate from the vertical portion of the trough to the center or inner portion of the trough. At the same time, any heavy particles trapped in the transitional area of the trough will be forced to migrate to the inner edge of the trough and any coal particles will be forced to migrate to the outer edge of the trough. SPIRAL SPLI'TTEP ARRANGEMENT The critical placement of splitters along the inner edge of the trough for removal of the heavy ash particles as the slurry flows down the trough further enhances the separation of the coal particles. At the bottom of the spiral trough are product splitters arranged to make a final separation of the slurry stream into clean coal, middlings, and refuse products.
