INTRODUCTION The Sunnyside mines of Kaiser Steel Corp. are lo¬cated on the west flank of the Book Cliff Range, a tongue of the Wasatch mountain range in Utah. The mines are 193.12 air km (120 air miles) southeast of Salt Lake City and 40.23 km (25 miles) east of the town of Price. The area has a semiarid climate with an an¬nual rainfall of 304.8 to 381 mm (12 to 15 in.) and a temperature range of -23.3 to 32.2°C (-10 to 90°F). The base of the Book Cliff Range is approximately 1981 m (6500 ft) in elevation with some mountain peaks in excess of 3048 m (10,000 ft) (Fig. 1). The Sunnyside mines were opened in the late 1890s and have been operated continuously since that time. Kaiser Steel leased the No. 2 mine in 1942 and pur¬chased the entire property in 1950. There are three mines adjacent to one another, each with its separate access, ventilation, and haulage. The three mines en¬compass an area extending 12.87 km (8 miles) along the outcrop and dipping northeasterly 2.41 to 3.22 km (11/z to 2 miles) into the Book Cliffs. During 1975, only the No. I and No. 3 mines were operating to sup¬ply 908 184.7 t/a (1,000,000+ stpy) of clean coal to the Kaiser Steel mill at Fontana, CA. Sunnyside coal is blended with coal from the Kaiser Steel mine near Raton, NM, and with purchased coal from noncompany sources to form the mix for the coke ovens. At that time, Sunnyside operated three longwall units and five to seven continuous miner units. Typical production for that time came from one miner unit pillaring an area not conducive to longwall mining; one or two miner units on construction or modernization projects, and the remaining units used to develop future longwall panels. Longwall mining has been a part of the Sunnyside scene since 1961 when the first panel was set up in the lower Sunnyside seam of the No. 3 mine. Through 1975, 27 longwall panels were mined (Fig. 2). Of the more than 47 173 604 t (52,000,000 st) of clean coal that were taken from the property through 1975, 6 350 292.9 t (7,000,000 st) were mined by longwall methods. Coal was brought to the surface in 4.5-t (5-st) mine cars and crushed to -152.4 mm (-6 in.) before entering the preparation plant. Coarse coal is cleaned by Baum jigs and fine coal (-28 mesh) is cleaned in flotation cells. The coal is reduced to 50.8 x 0 mm (2 x 0 in.) and belted to an aboveground storage pile with a ca¬pacity of approximately 113 398.1 t (125,000 st). The coal is gravity fed through two 1.52-m (5-ft) diam culverts directly into railroad cars, which pass beneath the storage pile through an arched excavation. Eighty-four 90.7-t (100-st) cars make up a unit train which makes the round trip to the steel mill in four days. Additional trains are scheduled in as demands dictate. Loading rates in excess of 13 607.8 t/h (15,000 stph) have been attained. Geology The coal seams of this area are of Cretaceous age and are classed as a medium volatile bituminous coal. coal, with a sulfur content less than 1 % and 6 to (20-mile) zone of the Book Cliffs, and this area is owned or under lease by either Kaiser Steel or US Steel. Coal in adjacent areas is noncoking but an excellent steam coal, with a sulfur content of less than 1 % and 6 to 7% ash. Sunnyside coal contains 40% volatile, 53% carbon, less than 1 % sulfur, and 51/2 to 61/2 % ash after washing. There are two minable seams throughout most of the Sunnyside property known locally as the upper and lower Sunnyside. Separation between the seams varies from less than 300 mm (1 ft) near the southern boundary adjacent to the US Steel Columbia mine, to over 12.19 m (40 ft) in areas of the No. 3 mine in the center of the Sunnyside property. The upper seam varies in height from 1.2 to 1.98 m (4 to 61/2 ft) while the lower seam varies in height from 1.52 to 4.28 m (5 to 14 ft) in areas of No. I mine where the two seams apparently come together. The majority of early work was con¬centrated in the upper seam which has a stronger roof and a lower sulfur content. When Kaiser Steel began mining the No. 3 mine in the early 1950s, it mined in the lower seam beneath the old workings with conven¬tional and continuous mining equipment. Numerous bounces and pressure points created by unextracted pillars and barriers in the upper seam made this a low¬production, high-cost mine and brought about the ad¬vent of the first longwall system. The first unit, while small by today's standards, successfully mined panels that had been all but given up and saved the mine from closure. There were areas that could not even be mined by longwall because of the erratic extraction in the upper seam. The system was successful enough to allow operations to gain access to and develop virgin areas of the upper seam. Development of longwall mining in the No. 3 mine has been confined to the upper seam since late 1964. With the almost complete extraction afforded by the longwall system, it is felt the lower seam can be successfully worked in future years (Fig. 3). In most of No. 1 mine, only the lower seam (or lower seam and upper seam combined) is minable, except in the northwest portion where a rock split has again separated the seam into two 1.83 to 2.13-m (6 to 7-ft) thick beds. In this area, the upper seam or upper split is being mined. The separation between seams at the present workings in this area varies from 0.609 to 6.1 m (2 to 20 ft). It is hoped that most of the lower split can be mined using shield supports and/or what¬ever new technology is developed in the coming years. The coal seams in this area dip to the northeast at an average grade of 10%. The dip near the outcrop reaches 22% and gradually decreases downdip. Over¬burden ranges from a few meters at the outcrop to 762 m (2500 ft) over some of the deeper workings. In the next several years, some overburden will be in excess of 914 m (3000 ft) as the lower mine workings extend ever deeper under the Book Cliffs. To cope with the

The conventional rare earth element (REE) industry has historically sought to develop ore deposits where geologic processes have produced mineralized zones with commercially attractive REE concentrations. These deposits are extremely uncommon, particularly in the USA. Given the criticality of these materials and the need for sustainable domestic supply, the current research seeks to leverage other autogenous processes that lead to concentrated REE resources. One such process is the generation of acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD is very common in many coal mining districts and results from the exposure and oxidation of pyrite during mining. During the generation and migration of AMD, liberated sulfuric acid mobilizes several metal ions including REEs. Treatment of AMD is required under U.S.C §1251, the Clean Water Act, and often consists of neutralization, oxidation, and metal hydroxide precipitation. To investigate the deportment of REEs during this process, a field sampling campaign was undertaken, whereby the concentration of REEs in AMD and AMD precipitates was measured directly. In the nine sites evaluated in this study, the REE concentrations of the precipitates varied from 29 to 1286 ppm with an average of 517 ppm among the sampled sites. The individual elements were enriched compared with the associated bulk Northern Appalachian (NAPP) coal material by factors ranging from 3 to 15. Furthermore, the distribution of REEs in all precipitate samples favored the heavy REEs (HREEs) when compared with traditional REE ores. This research represents the first part of multi-part research endeavor to characterize, classify, and determine the practicality of refining REEs from AMD and its by-products.

INTRODUCTION The Ballard Siphon was built in 1935 and consists of two 91.4 cm (36-inch) diameter wood-stave pipes. These pipes convey sewer flowsunder the Ship Canal from northwest Seattle and the Ballard Regulator to the North Interceptor and the West Point Treatment plant. The siphons were constructed using open cut construction, are now buried in the sediment on the floor of the canal, and have severely limited ability to be dewatered, inspected, or cleaned. The existing siphon is 394.7 m (1,295 feet) long from the junction structure on the southern shoreline to the regulator structure on the north. The location of the Ballard Siphon is shown in Figures 1 and 2. The area around the Ballard Siphon has become more populated and developed since the siphon was built. Additionally, the Ballard Siphon is subject to high flows that are greater than the capacity of the pipelines. This has resulted in predict-able Combined Sewer Overflows(CSO?s) whenever a large, long duration rain event occurs. The aged pipeline of uncertain viability has become a critical piece of the sewer system infrastructure. Because of the age of the pipelines and their importance, a sonar survey was completed on both barrels of the Ballard Siphon in December of 2005. The sonar images appeared to indicate crown intrusion of the wood-stave pipes, which suggested that the pipes were in imminent danger of collapse. As a result, an Emergency Declaration was executed by King County and the Ballard Siphon Replacement Project was initiated. Staheli Trenchless Consultants was retained to perform feasibility studies to deter-mine the viability of using microtunneling and horizontal directional drilling (HDD) for replacement of the Ballard Siphon. For the evaluations, the preferred site location was determined to be at or near the site of the existing Ballard Siphon in order to minimize the ancillary sewer work which would accompany moving to a new site. To meet flow demands and hydraulic requirements, the replacement siphon needed a mini-mum equivalent diameter of 182.9 cm (72 inches). This could be accomplished with a number of different siphon diameters and configurations including, but not limited to, three 106.7 cm (42-inch) diameter pipelines, two 152.4 cm (60-inch) pipelines, or two 91.44 cm (36-inch) pipelines and a 121.9 cm (48-inch) pipeline.

Introduction Many old underground mines have been developed extensively into reserves requiring large numbers of workers to maintain and rehabilitate lengthy track haulages and/or belt conveyor systems. Often, large numbers of fans are required to maintain minimal airflows in areas where poor conditions and huge leakages prevail. Problems that beset one such coal mine and projects undertaken to restore it to potential profitability are presented. Brief history The Vesta No. 5 mine was opened in 1908. Drift development began near the Monongahela River, which was the primary avenue for shipping metallurgical coal to coke ovens in Pittsburgh. Over the ensuing 75 years, the main haulage entries were developed a distance of 16.1 km (10 miles) to the present mining area. Track haulage was used to transport coal from working sections to the river loading facility. As haulage distance and areas of high water influx increased, management decided, in 1973, to construct an underground conveyor belt system. The project spanned 36 months and culminated in a system of 22 flights, ranging from 205.7 to 1767.8 m (675 to 5800 ft) long. Six intake and eight return entries were developed as the mains were advanced. These entries provided adequate ventilating capacity over the years, but as extensive gob areas progressed and roof conditions deteriorated, the entries became inaccessible and more resistant to airflow. By 1981, five fans were being used to circulate 943.9 m3/s (555.5 cfm) of air through the mine. An average of 6440 t (7100 st) were produced from 20.8 continuous miner unit shifts and 2.7 longwall unit shifts each day in 1981. The ratio of support to production personnel was 1.94. To maintain the outby 16.1 km (10 miles) of haulage, 110 personnel were used. The average cost per ton was $43.54 ($39.58 per st), resulting in excessive bottom-line losses. The mine possessed a rather promising reserve, mostly in lease, of good quality, medium-sulfur metallurgical coal, but it also had a number of formidable operating problems. Operating problems Contributing factors toward relatively low productivity and high costs were the conditions of the track haulage, conveyor, and ventilation systems. Productivity was affected greatly by downtime associated with the conveyor system, which lacked adequate access for making splices or other repairs. Introduction Modern longwall mining, introduced to the US coal industry in the mid-1960s, is the latest coal mining technique. Today, longwall mining produces more than 15% of all underground coal production. The growth of longwall mining in the US is slow. However, nearly two decades of longwall mining have demonstrated that its benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Longwall Advantages Production and Economics - A typical longwall production ranges mostly from 0.9 to 1.8 kt (1000 to 2000 st) of clean coal per shift. This is about three to six times the production of comparable continuous mining units. Furthermore, there are much less rejects in longwall mining, typically 15% to 25%. It must be noted, however, that a new longwall with an inexperienced crew may produce less, depending on mining conditions. But as experience gains, production increases rapidly. Due to its high production, the cost per ton of coal mined over the mine's lifetime is cheaper with longwall mining than with continuous mining. A study on a conceptual mine of 25 year life using actual operational data (Dangerfield, 1981) concluded that the cost per ton of coal mined is 32% cheaper by longwall than by continuous mining. Another benefit from its high production potential is that it enables the production to be concentrated in a few longwall faces versus many units of continuous mining required to achieve a similar production. As a result, mine organization and management simplify considerably. Safety and Savings - Most US longwalls use shield supports that cover the roof with solid canopy and isolate a gob completely from the face area. Thus, if the supports are properly selected and operated, the potential for roof fall accident is almost zero. Furthermore, it is not unusual that a well-run longwall face is much more orderly and cleaner that most well-run machine shops. The ventilation system for longwall mining is the most ideal type. It is simple and unique. No auxiliary fans are required. The fresh air sweeps through the whole face. Its volume and velocity can be adjusted as demanded. Recovery - In spite of multiple entries layout for US longwall panels, the longwall method recovers up to 40% more coal than the continuous mining method (Dangerfield, 1981). The typical recovery for longwall mining is 70% to 85% versus 45% to 80% for continuous mining. Versatility - Longwall mining has been employed successfully in seam heights ranging from 0.8 to 3.7 m (2.7 to 12 ft); in seam inclinations from horizontal to 35°; in overburden depths from 46 to 914 m (150 to 3000 ft); in single or multiple seam mining; and in uniform or irregular seam characteristics. For seam height less than 1.2 m (4 ft), the plow is used instead of a shearer. However, in spite of recent developments, the plow still is unsuitable for hard coal seams. Slow Acceptance How come longwall mining, with so many advantages, has not spread more rapidly? Undoubtedly, the major reason is the large capital investment required. Under normal market conditions, the capital required for a longwall panel ranges from $7 to $11 million. Another factor is the uncertainty of its applicability to any specific coal seam of interest where longwall has not been used or operated successfully. Although longwall mining elsewhere has proven its applicability to wide-ranging seam conditions, there have been several failures in the past two decades. Analyses of those cases show that most failures can be attributed to inexperience, both operational and technical, including equipment selection. Therefore, personnel training on the longwall mining technique is absolutely necessary before its initial operation. Some earlier statements about adverse surface subsidence associated with longwall mining were misleading. Research has proven that surface subsidence under longwall mining is controllable and predictable. And, if longwall mining was mandatory since the onset of coal mining in the US, there would be no surface subsidence problems over abandoned mined land today. On June 16, 1982, Rio Blanco submitted a request to the US Minerals Management Service for a suspension of operations under its federal oil shale lease. The company also wanted a five-year delay in the requirement for further minimum royalty payments and a five-year extension of the primary lease terms of 20 years. The request was granted in late July in the midst of yet another slump in oil shale activity. Rio Blanco holds one of four Federal oil shale leases that were granted under the Interior Department's Prototype Oil Shale Leasing Program in 1974. That year the DOI offered for lease six federal oil shale tracts, two each in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. The leases in Colorado and Utah were granted for substantial bo¬nus bids as shown in Table 1, but the Wyoming tracts had no takers. In the eight years hence, no oil shale has been produced commercially. Indeed, the prospects for successful oil shale development have fluctuated widely, continuing a 60-year- old cyclical pattern in the fledgling industry. The prototype program was developed and initiated while this infant industry struggled to begin anew, without the benefit of any federal oil shale leasing regulations, or any history of federal oil shale leasing at all. Permanent regulations were not required because the effort was limited and designed to provide the foundation for any future leasing program. Section 21 of the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920, a Nov. 30,1973 Federal Register notice, and the leases themselves constitute the legal and regulatory framework for leasing and developing prototype oil shale tracts. The prototype leases contain some unusual provisions including installment payments of the bonus bids, credit of early development costs against payments due the government, adjustment of royalty rates according to regional crude oil price fluctuations, and unusually extensive and detailed environmental stipulations. Several of the provisions were intended to provide incentives for early development and financial penalties for failure to develop. The requirement for minimum royalty payments in lieu of actual production royalties beginning in the sixth year of the lease falls in the latter category. After the sixth year, the required minimum payment is increased east year through the 15th year by an increment equal to that due in the sixth year. The minimum royalty then remains the same through the final five years of the primary lease term. Minimum royalty is calculates on a different production level for each prototype lease, based on the quantity of 125 L/t (30 gal/st) shale estimated to be recoverable from. each tract by room-and-pillar mining. That mining system was selected for reference as the only proven extraction method for oil shale at that time (early 1970s) The minimum royalty (production) rate was calculated for each tract by direct comparison of its estimated recoverable 125-L (30-gal) resource to a hypothetical tract containing 1.9 Gt (2.1 billion st) of recoverable 125-L (30-gal) shale. For the hypothetical lease tract, the minimum production for the sixth year was calculated to be 3.2 kt/d (3,500 stpd), increasing by a like amount each lease year through the 15th to a daily production rate of 31.7 kt (35,000 st). Under this formula, the hypothetical lease tract would yield $16 million in minimum royalty payments over the 20-year primary lease term if there were no production, no development credits taken, and no adjustment of the royalty rate due to fluctuation of regional crude oil prices. The production rate of 31.7 kt/d (35,000 stpd) was a somewhat arbitrary figure that was considered, in the early 1970s, to represent a minimum size for a commercial oil shale operation. A production rate of 7.9 dam3/d (50,000 bbls/day) soon supplanted that smaller mine production figure as a rule of thumb for the minimum size for a commercial facility. The proportional relation-

The main goal of this study was not only to investigate the effectiveness of the FGX Dry Separator for removing pure rock from run-of-mine coal producing a better feed stock for conventional coal preparation plants but also to optimize the FGX Dry Separator performance for producing a salable clean coal product without using the conventional wet coal preparation processes. A Model FGX-1 Dry Separator with feed throughput capacity of 10 tph was extensively tested at the Illinois Coal Development Park using two coal samples having distinctly different cleaning characteristics. Statistically designed experimental programs were conducted to indentify critical process variables and optimize FGX Dry Separator performance by systematic adjustments of critical process variable parameters. The coal cleaning performance of the FGX Dry Separator was evaluated for the particle size range of 63.5 x 4.76 mm in most cases, although FGX Dry Separator feed consisted of nominal -63.5 mm run-of-mine coals. The best cleaning performance obtained from the FGX Dry Separator is described by specific gravity of separation (SG50) and probable error (Ep) values of 1.98 and 0.17, respectively. The SG50 and Ep values for individual size fractions were as follow: 1.90 and 0.12 for the +50.8 mm size fraction, 1.95 and 0.18 for the 50.8 x 25.4 mm size fraction, 2.01 and 0.19 for the 25.4 x 12.7 mm size fraction, and 2.03 and 0.23 for the 12.7 x 4.76 mm size fraction. These process efficiency measures produced a clean coal with ash content of 13.38% from a feed coal with ash content of 34.45%. Ash content of tailings and middlings streams were 85.09% and 39.57%, respectively. Total sulfur contents of corresponding streams were 3.87%, 4.68%, 6.87%, and 4.62%. For a relatively easy to clean Illinois No 6 seam coal (Cleaning Index: 0.72), only about 0.42% of the clean coal (i.e., 1.6 float fraction) present in the feed was lost to the tailings stream. For a relatively difficult to clean coal (Cleaning Index: 0.53), about 0.98% of the clean coal present in the feed was lost to the tailings stream.

Brines (a solution containing more than 100,000 mg/l dissolved solids) in sedimentary basins are genetically related to evaporites in one of three ways: (1) dissolution of evaporite minerals, generally halite; (2) interstitial fluids in evaporites which are expelled from their source rock during compaction; (3) incongruent alteration of hydrous evaporite minerals (carnallite). Most brines of commercial interest originate as interstitial fluids in halite-rich rocks. These fluids are initially rich in magnesium, sulfate, and potassium but evolve in composition to an Na-Ca-Cl brine during their migration to their present host rock. A particularly important reaction in this process is: 2CaCO3 + Mgt+ = CaMg(CO3)2 + Cat (1a) This reaction reduces the magnesium content of the brine and ultimately converts it to a calcium-rich brine. The loss of sulfate occurs by two mechanisms. One of these is by direct precipitation as calcium sulfate (either as gypsum or anhydrite): Ca 2+ + SO4 2- = CaSO4 (2a) Additional sulfate may be lost from the brine by sulfate reduction: S042 + 1.33CH2 + 214- = H2S + 1.33CO2 + 1.33H20 (3a) The loss of carbonate species occurs by precipitation as carbonates: H2O + C02 + Cat = CaCO3 + 2H+ (4a) The net result of reactions 3 and 4 is: Ca 2+ + SO4 2- + 1.33CH2 = H2S + CaCO3 + 0.33H2O + 0.33CO2 (5a) The loss of potassium from brines is caused by the formation of potassium aluminosilicates: 2K+ + Al2Si2O5 (OH)4 + 4SiO2 = 2H + 2KAlSi2O8 + H2O (6a) The hydrogen ions produced by this reaction dissolve carbonates: 2H+ + CaCO3 = Ca 2+ + CO2 + H2O (7a) The net result of reactions 6 and 7 is: 2K+ + CaCO3 + Al2Si205 OH)4 + 4SiO2 = Ca2 + 2KA1Si3O8 + H2O + C02 (8a) A study of brines from central Mississippi has shown that the composition of these brines is related to the interaction of pore fluids from evaporites with minerals in the enclosing sedimentary rocks.

INTRODUCTION The inherent errors of simple passive track detectors /SPTD/ used for estimation of exposure to the radon daughters /RnDP/ amount to about 30% /Do75/ while for active detectors only reach about 3 - 4% /Ph78, Du79/. The large error inherent in SPTD is the result of strong dependence of its calibration coefficient on the equilibrium Rn RnDP in the vicinity of detector /0r80/. Nevertheless the SPTD shows many advantages and seems to be very useful for to the estimation of individual exposure of miners to RnDP /Do81a/. For this reason the investigations are undertaken to improve SPTD so that it might provide information about the equilibrium Rn : RnDP during exposure. If the equilibrium would be known then one could use a suitable calibration coefficient yielding a better precision of the measurement. So far, some investigations of the improved type of SPTD have been conducted. One was based on the concept of using the so called diffusion barrier permitting to differentiate the tracks originating from Rn and RnDP /Fr77/. Such improved detector has been named a passive differentiating track detector /PDTD/. However, own investigations have shown /Do81b/ that this type of detector cannot provide precise informations about equilibrium Rn : RnDP. For this reason the investigations of the new idea of PDTD have been carried out. The new model presented below is based on the use of the absorbers of alpha particles. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS The first variant of the concept is as follows: The differentiating detector consists of two portions of detective foil /track detector/ but only one is covered with an aluminium absorber. Thickness of the absorber is carefully selected so that only RaC' particles /7.7 MeV/ can pass the barrier. The second portion of the detective foil records all alpha particles originated from Rn and RnDP i.e. works like a SPTD. The scheme of such a detector, the so called two-fields passive differentiating track detector /PDTD-2/ is shown in the Fig. 1. It is possible to introduce a parameter that can characterize the equilibrium Rn RnDP, namely, the so called track density ratio /TDR/. The ldaho Cobalt Belt represents a unique geologic environment containing some of the largest known reserves of cobalt in the United States. Stratabound cobalt-copper-gold deposits formed within a sedimentary basin that was generated by the rifting of an Archean cratonic block. Host rocks for these deposits are the Early to Middle Proterozoic Yellowjacket Formation comprising a suite of clastic sediments, volcaniclastics, and mafic tuffs that accumulated in the intracratonic rift basin about 1.7 b.y. ago. Rifting was probably initiated during a regional heating and doming event that may date back to 1.8 b.y. ago. During this time, other rift basins were likely to have formed in the region. They probably represent the precursors of a much larger depositional environment having characteristics of an Atlantic- type or passive continental margin where younger formations of the Belt Supergroup were deposited. The Yellowjacket Formation has been subdivided in the Idaho Cobalt Belt into three genetic units representing various subenvironments of a deepwater clastic fan complex. A northwest- trending deep-basin structural trough accumulated fine-grained muddy sediments that were periodically interrupted by distal turbidites of the subaqueous fans. Subsequent progradation caused the deposition of coarser-grained clastics of the more proximal portions of the fan complexes. Submarine fan lobes were built across northwest-trending tectonically active basin growth faults. These in-basin structures caused a great deal of penecontemporaneous deformation within the Yellowjacket sequence. Northeast-trending fault zones formed an orthogonal set of fractures that controlled the shape and size of sub-basins, and were also an influence on lateral migration of dominantly fine-grained clastic material. The eruption of mafic tuffs at about 1.7 b.y. ago added a new component to the Yellowjacket sedimentary sequence. Around the Blackbird mine area these tuffs commonly occur either near the base or within some of the sandier sequences. Since most of the sand influxes were largely controlled by basinal tectonism, the tuffs were probably erupted during tectonically active periods of basin development. The dynamic nature of the sedimentary environment probably caused much of the tuffaceous component to be mixed with other clastics and even resedimented as volcaniclastic material. In time, the change to a higher energy sedimentation regime resulted in such a dramatic clastic dilution of the tuffs that they could not survive in the areas of the vents, and, if present, they must have been distributed elsewhere in the basin.

The Peñasquito deposit in Mexico is one of the largest grassroots precious metal discoveries to be developed in recent years Minera Peñasquito, S.A. de C.V., a wholly owned subsidiary of Goldcorp Inc. has developed the Peñasquito property to produce an average annual production of 120 kilo tonnes of lead containing 0.5 million oz gold and 30 million oz silver and 250 kilo tonnes of zinc containing 20 thousand oz gold and 1.5 million oz silver.. The Peñasquito property covers a 39,000 hectare area in the western half of the Concepción del Oro district in the northeast corner of Zacatecas State, Mexico, approximately 24°45'N latitude/101°30'W longitude. The sulfide reserves are 1,009 million tonnes containing 3.33 million tonnes of lead, 7.26 million tonnes of zinc, 16.5 million ounces of gold and 1,000 million ounces of silver. This paper describes the work to justify the installation of HPGR to process the crushed SAG mill pebbles. The SAG mill-Ball mill and Cone crusher (SABC) grinding circuit is an accepted grinding circuit to optimize power consumption relative to throughput. The installation of a HPGR to process the Cone crusher product is the next step in optimizing the power consumption relative to throughput. The concern expressed by some on not moving on this change in grinding circuit was the capital and operating cost of a HPGR. The pebbles from the SAG mill can be the more abrasive and are the harder particles of the ore. Goldcorp investigated the wear and processing costs of installing a HPGR to treat the crushed pebbles. The conclusion was the installation would be a very positive economic factor in the operation of Peñasquito. This is the first application of the use of HPGR to process crushed pebbles. Minera Peñasquito and M3 Engineering selected Polysius to provide a Polycom 2417 with twin 3,000 kW drives. A comprehensive test program at Polysius has shown for 7% higher circuit power it is possible to get approx 23% higher tonnage. This coupled with full utilization of the SAG and Ball Mill available energies and with proper control of the transfer size from the SAG to Ball mill circuit there is the potential to achieve 65,000 mtpd per line or a 30% total capacity increase. The cost of power for this increase in grinding capacity is 4.8 kWh/tonne.

New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland dominate Australian black coal production and exports. NSW produced 86 Mt (95 million st) of saleable coal in 1994, a doubling of output since 1980. Asian demand for thermal and coking coal has driven this growth. This high Asian demand is expected to continue and NSW will seek to secure its share. History The history of the New South Wales (NSW) coal industry can be traced to 1797 when coal was first taken from Newcastle to Sydney (Ellis, 1969). At that time, NSW was a British colony, independent from the other colonies, such as Victoria and Queensland. Australia, as a federation of colonies, did not exist until 1901. The Newcastle coal industry grew through the 1800s in line with the growth of the colonies. Several events spurred demand for Newcastle coal. These included: ? The NSW and Victorian gold rushes of the 1850s and associated population growth. ? The development of steamship traffic at the expense of sail. ? The development of railways and town gas supplies. By 1900, Australia was producing 6.4 Mt (7 million st) of coal, most of it from NSW. By then, NSW had established strong export markets in Indonesia, China, Japan and New Zealand. The history of energy consumption is marked by continual competition, changing intensity of use and substitution. From 1900 to 1940, the Queensland, Victorian and Indonesian coal industries developed at the expense of NSW exports. Similarly, New Zealand developed its hydroelectric industry and thus declined as the largest customer for NSW coal. Oil replaced steam in the shipping and railway markets and electricity replaced gas for lighting. Industrial efficiencies also affected coal. Between 1928 and 1938, coal consumed in generating power fell from by 17% on a kilowatt hour basis and, during the same period, the amount of gas produced per ton of coal rose by 18% (Shaw and Bruno). Faced with these pressures, production and exports stagnated. By 1941, Australian black coal production was 14.2 Mt (15.6 million st). NSW's production was 11.7 Mt (12 million st), up only 19% from 1912. Exports had virtually ceased (Fig. 1). In such circumstances, the industry had lost focus. "This paper presents experiences gained from the construction of the Lake Mead Intake No. 3 project. The 4.7 km long tunnel was excavated with a hybrid TBM (able to operate in both closed and open mode). The tunnel crossed metamorphic and sedimentary rocks under a hydrostatic pressure of about 14 bar. During the excavation of the tunnel the TBM encountered difficult ground conditions caused by a combination of high water pressure, poor ground quality and locally low depth of cover. The adverse conditions required the TBM to be driven in closed mode at very high support pressures (10 – 15 bar) for approximately 60% of the tunnel length. The paper summarizes the main problems encountered during TBM excavation and analyzes the evolution of the TBM parameters over the entire tunnel length. INTRODUCTION The Lake Mead Intake No. 3 project is located approximately 30 km away from the city of Las Vegas in Nevada, USA. The project consists of the construction of a deeper third intake for the biggest reservoir in the United States, which is formed by the Hoover Dam. The construction of the new intake was required due to the constant drawdown of the lake level (more than 40 m in the past 20 years) and the consequent risk that the shallower intakes 1 & 2 may run dry. The project included the fabrication and positioning on the lake bottom of an intake riser, the excavation and lining of a 185 m deep shaft and construction of a 4.7 km long tunnel. One peculiarity of the project is that the water table is located about 140 m above the tunnel elevation (i.e. corresponding to a hydrostatic pressure of 14 bar at the current lake level). The tunnel was constructed using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) able to operate in both open and closed mode (Mc Donald & Burger, 2009). The present paper focuses on the TBM tunneling experience gained from the Lake Mead Intake No. 3 tunnel. The TBM excavation started on December 27, 2011 and finished on December 10, 2014 with the breakthrough to the intake structure at the bottom of Lake Mead. GEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS The assessment of the ground conditions encountered during construction was mainly based upon qualitative descriptions of the tunnel face conditions (during open mode operations) and analysis of the extracted muck (during closed mode operations)."

Hecla?s Lucky Friday Mine is a deep, underground producer of silver, lead and zinc in the Coeur d?Alene mining district of northern Idaho. Main access into, and production from, the mine is via the Silver Shaft, a 5.5-m (18-ft) diameter, concrete lined shaft sunk by J.S. Redpath to an original depth of 1,890 m (6,200 ft) in the early 1980s. The shaft is divided into four compartments (Fig. 1), with sets made of 225 mm x 175 mm (9 in. x 7 in.) hollow structural section (HSS) steel buntons and 150-mm x 150-mm (6-in. x 6-in.) HSS dividers spaced every 4.5 m (15 ft) down the length of the shaft. Two skip compartments on the east side of the shaft are equipped with 125-mm x 150-mm (5-in. x 6-in.) HSS steel guides and 9-t (10-st) skips with three deck trailer cages for men and materials. The west side of the shaft is divided into a manway, and a fourth compartment that was originally designed for a service cage. Shaft services consist of a 250-mm (10-in.) a compressed air line and 150-mm (6-in.) sandfill line along the south side of the shaft, and 250-mm (10-in.) discharge (gray) water and 150 mm (6 in.) fresh water lines on the north wall. The mine?s primary 13.8 kV power lines, as well as communication lines are located on the west wall of the shaft. The production hoist is a 3.7-m (12-ft) diameter, double drum, double clutch, 2,238 kW (3,000 hp), direct current unit equipped, at the time, with thyristor drives. The 30-year-old drives would prove to be problematic during the rehabilitation project, leading to an upgrade to modern ABB drives later in the project, after the shaft rehabilitation was complete. The shaft had been subjected to the typical wear and tear of 30 years of operation, including intermittent sandfill and muck spills, and, in the lower areas, some corrosion. During those 30 years, the west compartment, originally designed for the service cage, could only be accessed from a work deck on top of the skips or from the manway.

The low-grade nickel laterite ore used in this study was successfully upgraded through selective reduction by industrialized rotary kilns followed by magnetic separation. The results indicated that both iron metallization extent and nickel metallization extent showed obvious linear correlation. In addition, rational roasting temperature and prolonged grinding time could enhance the overall fineness level of reduced laterite nickel ore. The moderate roasting temperature at a range of 1100–1150 °C should be suitable enough to a conversion of total nickel to metallic nickel and partly inhibited the conversion of total iron. Ultimately, the obtained ferronickel alloy with a nickel content of 7.32% and an iron content of 84.15% was prepared successfully from the lowgrade nickel laterite ore containing a nickel content of 1.92%. Nickel and iron recoveries were 96.72 and 89.08% respectively, which achieved the highly efficient recovery and utilization of iron and nickel from low-grade laterite nickel ore

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of various water mediums on desulfurization and deashing of a coal sample using flotation. For this purpose, experimental studies were conducted on a coal sample containing high ash and sulfur contents. The effects of pH, solid concentration, collector amount and frother amount on the flotation were investigated separately in Mediterranean Sea water, Çermik thermal spring water, snow water and tap water. Flotation results indicated that, when comparing the various water mediums, the following order for the ash content was obtained: snow water < Çermik thermal spring water < tap water < the Mediterranean Sea water. For the reduction of total sulfur, the following order was obtained: snow water > Çermik thermal spring water > Mediterranean Sea water > tap water. When snow water was used as a flotation medium, it was found that a concentrate containing 3.01% total sulfur and 27.64% ash with a total sulfur reduction of 57.06% was obtained from a feed containing 7.01% total sulfur and 41.17% ash.

With the burgeoning development of precious metals heap leach mining projects throughout the country regulatory agencies are beginning to take a closer look at the short-and long-term environmental consequences of heap leach mining. This increase in regulatory review is occurring on federal, state and local levels, and is affecting both large- and small-scale mining developments. Small-scale mining developments are receiving especially critical regulatory scrutiny because in the eyes of some regulatory agencies, small developers lack the credibility automatically accorded to major mining companies. This is due in part to a bad image of small miners based upon past environmental problems and permit violations caused by a few, small operators. The proponent of a small mining development thus faces special problems during the project permitting process, and must convince the regulatory authorities of his company&apos;s ability and commitment to plan, develop, and decommission a mining operation in compliance with environmental regulations. Not only must the small developer have a thorough understanding of the regulatory requirements affecting his project, he must also devote considerable effort to careful internal planning in order to produce a well organized approach to project permitting. The importance of proper planning cannot be overstated. Project planning is key to convincing the regulatory agencies that the small miner is capable of developing a viable project. More- over, the economics of a small mining project demand permit acquisition at modest cost and in a timely fashion. A well planned permitting effort will thus ensure that permits are received within budget and on schedule. This paper will review the federal, state, and local permitting requirements for heap leach projects, and the variability of these requirements from state to state. The environmental assessment process for projects developed on public lands, and the acquisition of zero- discharge water quality permits, air quality permits, and local special use permits as they apply to small mining developments will be discussed. The paper will conclude with a review of project decommissioning and cyanide neutralization requirements and their implications for small-scale heap leach projects.

Limestone-based material is effective for reducing arsenic concentrations below the current limit of 10 parts per billion for drinking water, typically resulting in final concentrations of about 4 to 6 ppb. However, in laboratory and field testing, further reductions to the 1 ppb range are difficult to achieve with limestone unless other material such as iron is added. The removal mechanism with untreated limestone appears to be the formation of a low-solubility precipitate of hydrated calcium arsenate, in the form of arsenate-apatite. Likely reactions and thermodynamic data indicate a theoretical removal limit of about 2 to 4 ppb for arsenic using raw limestone. Limestone also can reduce concentrations of cadmium and lead below 1 ppb in water, resulting in >99% removal efficiency. Thermodynamic constraints appear to be favorable for reactions involving the formation of otavite during cadmium removal and the formation of hydrocerussite during lead removal.
