The Zoro pegmatite project in east-central Manitoba occurs 20 km east of the historic mining town of Snow Lake. A composite sample (Master Comp) was prepared fromthree pegmatite zones within Zoro Dyke “D1” including the North, Central, and South Zones for mineralogical analysis and heavy liquid separation (HLS). The mineralogical examination was conducted on a subsample crushed to ca. P80 of 600 μm to determine the overall mineral assemblage, liberation of spodumene, and assess the potential recovery of spodumene by flotation. XRD and QEMSCAN results show that the sample consists of spodumene (10.5%), quartz (29.3%), plagioclase (29.0%), K-feldspars (21.3%), micas (5.1%), tourmaline (2.9%), and Fe-Mn-phosphates (0.1%). Spodumene is well liberated (88%), but also forms complex particles (7%), and middlings with quartz (4%). Liberation of spodumene increases from 81 in the + 600 μm to 95%in the − 106 μm size fraction. Liberation of quartz, feldspars, and micas account for 89%, 94%, and 83%, respectively. Electron probe micro-analyses and LA-ICP-MS showed that the average Li concentration is 3.7% in spodumene, 2196 ppm in micas, 1001 ppm in tourmaline, and 115 ppm in K-feldspars. Thus, spodumene accounts for 96%, micas 2%, Fe-Mn phosphates 1%, and both K-feldspars and tourmaline for < 1% of the total Li in the sample. The mineralogical data indicate the potential to recover spodumene by flotation with minimal Li losses due to other than spodumene carriers. Heavy liquid separation was conducted on the Master Comp which was crushed to − 6.4 mm, while the − 600 μmfractionwas removed fromthis test. The coarse fraction − 6.4mm/+ 600 μmwas subjected to HLS tests with eight heavy liquid-specific gravity cut-points (2.65 to 3.10 g/cm3). HLS indicates that it is possible to produce a high-grade lithium concentrate (close to 6% Li2O) after the rejection of iron silicates with magnetic separation.

Model pillars of limestone, marble, sandstone, and granite, with length-to-diameter ratios of 3, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.25 (0.286 for granite), were broken in axial compression to determine to what extent an increase in end constraint increased compressive strength. Radial end constraints of 13 to 23 percent of the average axial stress in the pillar, produced by solid steel rings bonded with epoxy to the ends of dogbone-shaped specimens, increased compressive strength somewhat above that of cylindrical pillars without ring constraint. However, when the results were compared with those obtained by other investigators for straight specimens of several rock types taken collectively, with L/D ratios greater than 0.5, the resulting strengths were not significantly different. Thus, the amount of end constraint produced by the solid steel rings was about the same as that produced by the friction from the steel end plates. In other tests a radial prestress of 3,000 psi or 5,000 psi was applied prior to axial loading by adjustable hardened steel rings to increase the constraint above that obtained for the solid rings. The average radial constraint stress, expressed as a percentage of the average axial pillar stress at failure for the 3,000 psi prestress, was 54.3 percent for limestone, 40.3 percent for marble, 44.7 percent for sandstone, and 23.4 percent for granite. The average radial constraint stress, expressed as a percentage of the average axial pillar stress at failure for the 5,000 psi prestress, was 74.2 percent for limestone, 51.2 percent for marble, 61.6 percent for sandstone, and 29.7 percent for granite. These constraints increased the compressive strength significantly above the strength of straight specimens and solid-ring constrained specimens. These results suggest that large horizontal stresses in orebodies mined by the room and pillar method should increase the strength of the pillars and allow an increase in ore recovery by a reduction of pillar size when major structural defects are absent.

This paper describes the techniques implemented at Randfontein Estates to develop twin-haulages at &apos;high speed&apos;. An operation which culminated in the world record advance for twin-end multiblast cyclic development in hard abrasive quartzites. A major expansion project was planned for the mine, with the sinking of a third twin-shaft system (to be known as Cooke No. 3), to raise the level of ore production from 3 500 000 to 5 000 000 tonnes per alumm. Subsequent redesign of the proposed shaft system as a single 9 m brattice wall shaft took place, reducing the planned shaft sinking period by 12 months and saving an estimated R 250 000 (U.S. $ 330 000) in sinking costs. The advancement of the Cooke No. 3 Shaft sinking and development programme necessitated a rapid excavation schedule for two interconnecting twin-haulages from the existing Cooke No. 2 twin shaft complex to provide a second means of egress. An early holing between the two shafts would provide significant financial and technical benefits. Pre-development and equipping of shaft pillar excavations would enable a rapid shaft production build up and blocking out of at least one year&apos;s ore-reserves.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an experimental method to evaluate the relative effectiveness of water additives on the extinguishment of coal fires. The experiments were conducted in the fire zone of the multiple entry section of the Bruceton Experimental Mine. Chambers filled with one hundred and eighty kilograms of Pittsburgh seam coal were ignited and allowed to burn until well developed fires were achieved. Extinguishing agent-water solutions were then applied to the fires and the quantity required to extinguish the fires compared to the amount of water alone required to extinguish similar fires. A 20% diammonium phosphate-water solution required an average of 22 L to extinguish the coal fires, while two commercially available additive-water solutions required an average of 30.6 and 30.3 L, respectively. The average amount of water required to extinguish the fires was 28 L. An analysis of covariance, using the thermal energy of the coalbed, Q, to quantify the fire at the time of extinguishment, showed that the diammonium phosphate-water solution was slightly more effective at extinguishing these coal fires than water alone, while the two commercially available additive-water solutions were statistically equivalent to water alone.

Rare earth elements (REE) are becoming more important in our society. REE deposits are found throughout NM. Some REE past production (1950s), as bastnaesite, came from the Gallinas Mountains district, Lincoln County, NM. Several companies and the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) have conducted exploration programs to identify REE potential. Four types of deposits are found in the district: epithermal REE-F veins, Cu-REE-F veins, REE-F breccia pipe and iron skarn deposits; all are associated with Tertiary peraluminous, alkaline to alkalic-calcic volcanic rocks. District zonation is defined by base metals (REE-F-Cu veins) that form center of the district, surrounded by REE-F veins. The magmatic-hydrothermal breccia pipe deposits form a belt partially surrounding the veins. Iron skarns formed at the top and edge of the trachyte intrusion and are likely the earliest stage of mineralization. In 1991-1992, USBM calculated an inferred resource of 0.487 million metric tons with a grade of 2.95% total REE. With the projected increase in demand of REE, areas such as the Gallinas Mountains district in New Mexico are being re-examined for additional REE potential.

The objective of this chapter is to provide data that will assist in the selection and sizing of equipment utilized in the filtration method of separating solids from liquids. It should be recognized at the outset that in some situations more than one option may be available to achieve the target desired. In some cases purely technical objectives may be sacrificed because of cost considerations, design factors or other elements in order to satisfy optimization within the flowsheet and/or to provide bottom line results. The Bureau of Mines is investigating the potential for in situ leach mining "(ISM) of gold and silver mineralization. This preliminary study examined samples from several types of deposits using light optical microscopy and the electron microprobe to characterize the ore and gangue minerals and their microscopic characteristics, including the spacial relations between the target minerals and likely natural fluid channelways. Low grade disseminated deposit types from the western U.S. were found to contain fracture-hosted or matrix-hosted gold and silver minerals, some of which are encapsulated by quartz or pyrite. Geologic features readily observed microscopically include ore and gangue mineral identity, size, and their association with each other and with fractures. Successful ISM application to gold and silver deposits needs this data to: (1) select the proper lixiviant based on chemical reactivity of the host rock, ore, and gangue minerals, (2) determine potential permeability characteristics when designing lixiviant flow patterns, and (3) understand potential problems of the lixiviant reaching encapsulated ore minerals. Careful examination of the geologic characteristics of each ore body is required because of the observed diversity of characteristics in deposits from the same "class" and even within the deposit itself.

As part of a cooperative effort between the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR), with input-from the phosphate industry, the conversion of phosphor-gypsum to sulfur is being investigated. The proposed process incorporates a thermal reduction of phosphogypsum to calcium sulfide (CaS) and a hydrometallurgical treatment to convert calcium sulfide to ammonium bisulfide (NH4SH), which is then oxidized using a catalyst to produce elemental sulfur. The paper summarizes the results of continuing laboratory studies using an activated carbon catalyst which was loaded with sulfur through oxidation of ammonium bisulfide solution. The extraction of the sulfur that forms in situ on the catalyst is a key area in the development of the sulfur recovery process. Two approaches for removing the sulfur are being investigated: 1) thermal treatment to volatilize sulfur, and 2) leaching the sulfur using liquid anhydrous ammonia. The research has shown that it is technically feasible to recover over 90% of the sulfur from the carbon by either volatilization or ammonia leaching. Locked-cycle testing has demonstrated that the carbon has the potential to be recycled after ammonia leaching.

Tantalum (Ta) and niobium (Nb) are extracted from many different ore types. The major economic orebody mined for tantalum and niobium consists of tantalite ((FeMn)Ta2O5) and columbite ((FeMnNb2O5)) in a solid-solution mineral commonly referred to as “coltan.” The largest supplying region, The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), is unfortunately also the most ethically compromised source for this critical mineral. Officially, the U.S. government has deemed coltan ore from the DRC a “conflict mineral” [1]. The lack of pragmatic and effective local mining regulation in Central Africa, when coupled with high levels of violence and corruption, has spawned a widespread, illegal, unethical and, most importantly, unsafe economy. This illicit economy is centered around first, illegally mining these valuable conflict minerals and second, smuggling these minerals into the global supply chain. Handheld spectroscopy devices could provide further transparency to these opaque supply chains, giving miners, traders and refiners the ability to authenticate the provenance of the minerals they encounter, and allowing companies to prove compliance with the regulatory agencies attempting to curtail illicit mining.

My first regular job nearly fell through. My parents were spending the summer in California and I joined them at Lake Tahoe where we were guests at the lovely summer home of the Reids of Belmont. The time went quickly but I was eager to start work so I left for Bisbee a few days earlier than I had arranged. This was lucky, as just after I left a letter came from Gene Whitely, chief engineer of Calumet and Arizona, saying that because of the depressed copper industry there would be no job. I reached Bisbee on a Saturday morning, a day or two before my 23rd birthday, July 27, 1907. The brown plastei four-story Copper Queen Hotel was only a few steps from the station where the branch railway ended. I rented the cheapest room on the top floor and, of course, there was no elevator. I soon learned how to walk up the mile of switching tracks to the Calumet and Arizona office at the Irish Mag mine. I was horrified when Whitely told me about his letter telling me not to come, but since I had not received it he relented and said I could work for a short time anyhow. I was to start at 7:30 the next Monday morning, "holding the ignorant end of the tape”-in other words being surveyor&apos;s assistant, at $100 a month. Hours were from 7:30 to 5: 00, seven days a week. I spent Sunday walking around the town. I rented a room at the Royal Lodging House, which was cheaper than the hotel. It smelled strongly of carbolic acid but that meant no bugs. Compared with Cobalt or Cripple Creek, Bisbee didn&apos;t seem unattractive. The main street, with one or two-storied stores and saloons, followed the bottom of the canyon with high steep hills on both sides. "The City of Atlanta’s Water Supply Program Tunnel project includes a 7,315-m (24,000-ft) long, 4-m (13-ft) diameter, hard rock tunnel. A complex aspect of the project involves connecting five, blind bore shafts to the tunnel in a location close to current drinking water reservoirs. During the supplemental geotechnical investigation following the initial contract award, results from additional borehole geophysics were reviewed. Unfavorably oriented fracture sets forced a change in the original pre-excavation grouting program designed for that site. Real-time grout monitoring and geophysical data were compared to provide assurance that the program, as designed, correlated with the in situ ground conditions. Following grouting, results were modeled, and all grouting data were reviewed to determine if grouting was complete.Project backgroundThe current water supply system operated by the city of Atlanta’s Department of Watershed Management (DWM) consists of four, aged, raw-water pipelines, one of which dates back to 1893. Based on previous assessments completed by the DWM, the entire water supply system is at, or will soon reach, its recommended useful life. As such, the city acquired the Bellwood Quarry in 2006 with the intention to create a water storage facility with a volume of approximately 9.1 billion L (2.4 billion gal) to serve approximately 1.2 million people.The project location is shown in Fig. 1, which is generally in the northwest part of downtown Atlanta, GA. The overall project has been divided into two phases. The Phase 1 project connects the quarry and the Hemphill Water Treatment Plant (HWTP), and the Phase 1 Extension project connects the HWTP to the Chattahoochee Water Treatment Plant (CWTP) and the Chattahoochee River. A 7,315- m (24,000-ft) tunnel with a finished diameter of 3 m (10 ft) connects all three elements. Ion flotation of gold is a process continuing to be developed to selectively beneficiate dilute aurocyanide liquors using a novel surface­active complexing agent. Aeration of these liquors causes accumulation of the precious metal species in the froth concentrate produced in a flotation column. Successful development of ion flotation for concentrating solids-free liquors would offer a low--cost method for recovering specific metals from heap leach runoff or waste tailings solutions. The cost of constructing and operating a 100 tph gold ion flotation facility has been compared with the relevant carbon adsorption plant costs. Reductions in operating costs of 25% and installed capital of 40% are possible in relevant expenditure areas. For an 'average' processing plant, this equates to annual operating savings of A$ 170 000 and a capital saving of A$ 515 000, with a three-point increase in total (mine and plant) site DCF ROI. High gold inventories are eliminated and the number of processing steps is reduced. The application of gold ion flotation will initially be confined to heap leach operations in the western U.S.A., although use of the process in mine abandonment programmes elsewhere is also an area of future development.

From the surface mines of Ptolemais basin 48 samples of Pliocene lignite were collected. The samples were analysed using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INNA) and Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) for determining the concentrations of 39 trace elements. The contents of sulphur and ash and the loss of ignition were also determined. The chemical affinity of these trace elements was estimated based on 40 correlation diagrams between the elements concentrations and the ash content of the collected lignite samples. According to the obtained results, 18 elements have inorganic affinity (Co, Cr, Cs, Hf, Sc, Th, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Yb, Lu, ?n, Ba, ?, Sn, ?r) and 10 elements have inter-mediate affinity (As, U, ?r, Pb, Cu, Sb, Sr, S, Ni, V). The remaining 12 elements (Au, Ir, ??, Rb, Se, Ta, W, Tb, Ag, Cd, Bi, Be) exhibited concentrations below the detection limit. Thus, they were impossible to be classified in a specific affinity group. Based on the classification of these trace elements and sulphur in inorganic and intermediate affinity groups some useful conclusions are drawn regarding their behaviour during lignite combustion and lignite ash utilization and disposal processes.

A major concern of mine fires is the heat generated ventilation disturbances which can move products of combustion (POC) through unexpected passageways. Fire emergency planning requires simulation of the interaction of the fire and ventilation system to predict the state of the ventilation system and the subsequent distribution of temperatures and POC. Several computer models were developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) to perform this simulation. The most recent, MFIRE, simulates a mine&apos;s ventilation system and its response to altered ventilation parameters such as the development of new mine workings or changes in ventilation control structures, external influence such as varying outside temperatures, and internal influences such as fires. Extensive output allows quantitative analysis of the effects of the proposed alteration to the ventilation system. This paper describes recent USBM research to validate MFIRE&apos;s calculation of temperature distribution in an airway due to a mine fire, as temperatures are the most significant source of ventilation disturbances. Fire tests were conducted at the Waldo Mine near Magdalena, NM. From these experiments, temperature profiles were developed as functions of time and distance from the fire and compared with simulations from MFIRE.

Evidence of hydrothermal activity on two Mid-Atlantic Ridge oceanic core complexes (OCCs), at 13º30’N (the Semyenov 1 through 5 fields) and 13º20’N (the Irinovskoe field) (Fig. 1) were studied using CTD casts, dredges, TV-grabs and SP surveys during previous research cruises to these sites (Cherkashev et al., 2013, McLeod et al., 2009). In late 2013, the Semyenov and Irinovskoe fields were revisited, this time with an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and a remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) during the ODEMAR (Oceanic Detachments at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge) cruise on the French research vessel "Pourqoui Pas ?". Here we present the first visual surveys and direct sampling of these vent sites. High-resolution (~2 m) bathymetry of the 13º30’N and 13º20’N OCCs and their associated vent fields was collected during 4 and 5 AUV dives, respectively, using the GEOMAR AUV "ABYSS" (Fig. 1). These surveys were flown between 70 m and 100 m above the seafloor, typically at a constant height to reduce vehicle movement. The AUV was equipped with Eh, turbidity, and temperature sensors in order to detect active hydrothermal venting. Over twenty ROV dives with the ROV "VICTOR 6000" allowed for the visual exploration of the OCCs and collection of 59 hydrothermal rock samples from the vent fields. As a result of these exploration activities, the first robust estimates of the size of the deposits, and the geologic controls on sulfide accumulation at these sites can be determined.

In a continuing effort to upgrade tunnel design and construction practice, the New York City Transit Authority sponsored a geotechnical monitoring program on a recently completed section of the E. 63rd Street line in mid-town Manhattan. The purpose of the program was to document rock behavior as well as temporary and final rock support systems to provide a possible basis for either confirmation or modificification to design methods and construction specifications. This paper describes those portions of the study associated with rock behavior and temporary support systems. The entire study included monitoring of rock movements above the tunnel as well as adjacent to a 36.6m (120 ft) shaft, monitoring of stresses in steel ribs, monitoring of loads in rock bolts in two test sections and monitoring of stresses in the final concrete lining. PROJECT DESCRIPTION Route 131-A, Section 4 is located in mid-town Manhattan extending from under the Central-Park Zoo on Fifth Avenue eastward under 63rd Street to the end of contract between Madison and Park Avenue. Figure 1 is a Project Locus Map. The contract included approximately 355m (1165 l.f.) of 4 track tunnel(13.4m (44 ft) wide by 13.7m (45 ft) high excavated dimensions) plus a 22.9m (75 ft) by 19.8m (65 ft) by 36.6m (120 ft) deep ventilation shaft. The entire tunnel and most of the excavation shaft was excavated in metamorphic rock, known locally as the Manhattan Schist. The depth to tunnel invert varied from approximately 27.4m (90 ft) at the west end of the contract to 35.Om (115 ft) at the east end. Rock cover above the excavated crown varied from approximately 6.7m (22 ft) at the approximate mid-point of the contract to 18.9m (62 ft) at the western end. The Late Paleocene–Middle Eocene phosphate nodules of Solan District of Himachal Pradesh belong to green facies of Subathu Formation of Sirmur group. Field observations indicate sporadic distribution of phosphatic nodules in the yellow brown to rusty brown, buff-colored bleach shales. Phosphatic nodules are dull earthy to dark grayish in color and break with sharp and conchoidal surfaces. Studies of phosphatic nodules using petrological microscope, X-ray diffractometry, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) attached with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) reveal that cryptocrystalline apatite (fluorapatite) is the dominant phosphate mineral. Silt sized silica is the dominant gangue, whereas pyrite and muscovite are present as minor gangue. The phosphate minerals occur as oolites, pellets, and cryptocrystalline apatite in the groundmass. Silica veins form a network replacing the original phosphatic matrix. Brown to brownish black color may be attributed by the organic matter in the phosphatic nodules. Completely phosphatized radiolaria and partially pyritized planktonic foraminifera are observed. There is corroboration of organic matter in the form of microbial filaments in the groundmass of apatite. The findings in the present investigation indicate that the different forms of the minerals, their texture, and distribution in the phosphatic nodules might be due to environmental vicissitudes in oxidizing to reducing conditions followed by replacement processes. Presence of microbial filaments may be due to the active role of microorganisms during the formation of these phosphatic nodules.

Even though the economy of the United States remains in recession ? or not, depending on which economist you listen to ? muicipalities still need improved transportation, water and wastewater transit systems. And they are willing to spend the necessary funds on those systems, provided they are affordable, environ-mentally friendly and sustainable. From June 20-23, professionals in the tunneling and underground construction industry from around the world gathered in Portland, OR to learn new ways of providing those systems using the latest technology available. The Subtropolis mine is a room-and-pillar mine extracting the Vanport Limestone near Petersburg, Ohio. In February 2018, mine management began implementing a heading reorientation to better control the negative effects of excessive levels of horizontal stress. The conditions in the headings improved, but as expected, stressrelated damage concentrated within crosscuts. The mine operator has worked to lessen the impact of the instabilities in the outby crosscuts by implementing several engineering controls. With the implementation of each control, conditions were monitored and analyzed using observational and measurement techniques including three-dimensional (3-D) LiDAR surveys.
