From the massive equipment that moves the earth, to the parts that keep the equipment moving, it was all on display for more than 35,000 people who at-tended MinExpo 2008 at the Las Vegas Convention Center Sept. 22-24. In the largest show in the illustrious history of MinExpo, the success of the recent commodity boom was reflected in the more than 55,700 hm2 (600,000 sq ft) of floor space that was jam-packed with nearly 1,300 vendors. Among them, the makers of the industry?s largest machines, displaying their latest and greatest trucks, shovels, excavators, drills and other mining equipment. During the nearly decade-long commodities boom, equipment makers have worked hard to keep up with demand while also investing heavily in research and development. The beneficiaries of this R&D is the end user who saw first-hand at MinExpo 2008 the many advances that have already been made in safety, comfort and productivity from all the manufacturers. R&D has also helped spark more talk of automation, which is being used already at some of the world?s largest mines. Caterpillar and Komatsu have worked with the technology in surface mining and Bucyrus and Sandvik are among the industry leaders applying the science of automation to underground mines. Technology has in-creased greatly since the idea of moving massive equipment remotely was first knocked around and the idea of entire fleets operating around the clock seems to be getting closer to reality. But, until that happens, MinExpo attendees were treated to a show that featured some of the most impressive current machines the industry has to offer. In the largest booth space of the convention, Caterpillar (www.cat.com) displayed the culmination of an ambitious $280-million dollar investment, with the introduction of its new mining fleet of four new trucks. The F-series was un-veiled with common features in safety, cabs, engines, frames and bodies and Tier 2 compliant engines. The F series also features a return to the electric drive option. ?When our customers asked us for improvements to our mining trucks, we responded by making a record investment in every single truck in our line, as well as the increased capacity to produce more of them,? said Cater-pillar group president Stu Levenick. ?New technologies have allowed us to make trucks more reliable, easier to maintain and more friendly to the operator and to the environment.? The 793-series is in the 218- to 227-t (240- to 250-st) class that will be available in both mechanical (793F) and electric (793F ac) versions. The electric drive-only 313- t (345-st) 795F was also introduced, while the flagship 797B truck is in the process of being replaced by the new 797F mechanical drive, maintaining its 345- to 363-t (380- to 400-st) target payload. Completing Caterpillar?s new mining truck line will be new versions of the 785 and 789 mechanical drive trucks. The next generation of trucks will be phased into production during the next two years, with the Cat ac drive models expected to go into production in late 2010. The Swiss are building the world’s longest tunnel, the 57-Kilometer (35-mile) long Gotthard Base Tunnel. Lot 252, Tunnel Amsteg: Two Hard Rock Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) crossed hydro-thermally decomposed granite. While the East TBM advanced slowly but steadily, the West one got stuck for five months and had to be recovered by special means and methods. Both TBMs have finished their more than 11-Kilometer (7 miles) long drives successfully. Lot 360, Tunnel Sedrun: For the first time in tunneling, roadway support machines are used through most challenging, squeezing geology. They constantly advance in full face mode for about one Tunnelmeter/24 hours.

The stability of surfactant-free foam films was studied using the thin film pressure balance (TFPB) technique. In pure water, it was not possible to produce foam films due to weak film elasticity and strong hydrophobic force. In the presence of NaCl, however, the hydrophobic force was sufficiently dampened to allow metastable films to form. At 10-5 M NaCl, the equilibrium film thickness reached a maximum of approximately 130 nm at pH 6.0-7.3. The thinner films obtained on either side of this pH range was due to the increased ionic strengths associated with the HCl and NaOH additions for pH control.

Islais Creek Contract E, a transport/storage tunnel in San Francisco, was visited on a fieldtrip during construction by delegates to the 1995 RETC. This paper is a follow-up to that fieldtrip. The project’s two tunnels are 3.7 m and 3.2 m finished diameter, 155 m and 77 m long, respectively. The contractor used 1,000 overlapping jet grout columns to pre-treat the weak Bay Mud along the tunnel alignments, then mined them with an open faced tunnel shield, eliminating the need for compressed air tunneling. This paper documents the jet grouting program and the tunneling operation used on the project.

The new, 2.600 m long pipe under the river Elbe in Hamburg/Germany required for 2 traffic lanes, emergency lane and space for utilities a boring diameter of 14,20 m(46,6 ft). According the geology (glacial deposits consisting of clay, sand and marl, all containing big boulders) a Slurry-Shield with crusher was selected. With a minimum cover of 7 m and a maximum pressure of 5,6 bar extensive ground treatment was necessary to make the drive feasible. The machine contains a lot of new developments. The drive was finished in spring 2000 so all experiences can be reported. A special risk sharing contract avoided completely litigation.

Abstract, Syngenetic uranium in pre metamorphic Idaho Springs volcanics and sediments probably, was mobilized during metamorphism (1.7 b.y.) and partly retained along unconformities. Precambrian Silver Plume intrusives (1.4 b.y.) and Pikes Peak granite (1.0 b.y.) may have mobilized uranium from the craton and. Idaho Springs metamorphics to concentrate it in cauldron sites in migmatites, pegmatites, alaskite, disseminations and greissen. Tertiary intrusives also may have upgraded uranium by anatexis, leaching and differentiation. Tertiary vein and shear zone uranium mineralization may have-been-derived from underlying magma sources, leached from Idaho Springs metamorphics and from syngenetic leaching of overlying sediments and introduced by deep hydrothermal convection systems.

This paper discusses the overall challenges to construct a 15,125.7 m (49,625 LF),wastewater drainage tunnel in Cobb County, Georgia by a joint venture of Gilbert Southern Corp. and S.A. Healy Co. and a construction manager Parsons, with Jacobs Associates as a subcontractor. The goal of the project is to provide wastewater retention during peak usage and is connected to a treatment facility near the Chattahoochee River. The primary component of the project is the TBM-driven hard rock tunnel. Additional works include drill and blast areas; four intake interceptors, two construction shafts and a 33.5 m (110 ft), diameter pump station shaft.

Phase III of the Orme Street Combined Trunk Relief Sewer project connects two existing 2.13 m diameter combined sewers to a new 3.66 m diameter relief sewer at 7locations along a 970 m alignment in downtown Atlanta. The alignment was enveloped by adjacent structures and utilities. The project was constructed below the groundwater table through compressible residual soil, rock and mixed face using a myriad of construction techniques, including compressed air NATM and jet grouting. Numerous design and alignment changes and accommodations for existing utilities and conditions were made during construction. The authors believe this to be the ?rst NATM project in North America utilizing compressed air tunneling.

Specific software tools for Statistical Multivariate Analysis combined with real time process data were applied to Concentrator Plant at Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi SCM in Chile, basically to two Mill Lines, each one with one SAG mill (32’x15’8MW)and one Ball mill (22’x36’9.7MW). The main objective was to empower the operator actions using process patterns references instead of process variable set-points. Pattern clustering and the analysis of pattern deviations regarding normal or desired pattern, allows for improvements in process control and the further implementation of soft sensors for those variables not included in the initial model.

The use of a 25.4 mm diameter water-only hydrocyclone for separating fine-size (-150 µm), high-density (>4.5 g/cc) particles from similar-size, lower-density (2.65 glee) particles was investigated. It was found that a single-stage separation recovered nearly 90% of the heavy minerals (7.0 g/cc), while achieving a volume reduction of about 70%. The use of dense medium in a single stage improved volume reductions to 90% at similar heavy mineral recoveries. In addition, computer simulations of a three-stage circuit were performed, which showed that recoveries approaching 97% with volume reductions of 95% were possible.

In a longwall section that consisted of 7 longwall panels, there were two high pressure gas transmission pipelines across the panels burying from 3 to 10 ft. below the surface. One pipeline was 20 in. in diameter while the other was 24 in. in diameter. In order to investigate the stress conditions sustained by the pipelines during underground longwall mining, strain gages were mounted on the pipelines above panel #3, #4, and #5. Survey monuments were also installed along but near the pipelines. This paper presents a subsidence prediction method and the preliminary results of the pipelines' stress conditions as affected by underground longwall mining.

Workers in coal preparation plants, where vibrating screens are significant noise sources, are often exposed to sound levels exceeding 90 dB(A). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, a major coal company, and a vibrating screen manufacturer conducted a cooperative study of vibrating screen noise. Rubber isolators reduced sound levels by 1 dB. Urethane screen panels did not reduce sound levels in this case. Drive noise was determined to be the dominant noise source on the screen. Damped side plates reduced vibration levels on the screen sides by 1 to 7 dB(A). Detailed results of the study are presented.

The New Celebration Gold Mine near Kalgoorlie in Western Australia was commissioned in late 1986 and the CIL treatment plant currently processes 1.7 million tonnes of gold ore annually. The 1988 geological resource was 13.2 million tonnes grading 2.37 g/t Au in several open pittable deposits with the bulk of gold mineralisation occurring as a stockwork in Archaean quartz feldspar porphyry intrusives along a major regional shear zone. Mine planning, scheduling and operating techniques have focused on minimising open pit dilution whilst maintaining production requirements. This paper describes the successful achievement of this aim in extremely variable ground conditions and orebody widths.

The Humphrey Preparation Plant of Christopher Coal Company, located in Monongalia County, West Virginia, was built to process the combined production of the Pursglove No. 15 and the Humphrey No. 7 Mines. Both Mines operate in the Pittsburgh Seam, primarily producing Metallurgical Fuel destined for by-product ovens in the Pittsburgh District. The preliminary design of four mined stations and 7.2 km (4.5 miles) of tunnels for Seattle’s light rail transit system is described. Constraints that influenced the design and options that were studied are discussed. The hilly post-glacial soft-ground geology of the Puget Sound Region pushed the alignment deep. Mined underground stations at depths up to 75 m (250 ft) and shafts with excavated diameters of 20-m (65-ft) are required. A 460 m (1,500 ft) sub-aqueous crossing of Portage Bay and undercrossing of an active 12-lane multi-level freeway were two of the more significant design constraints.

The Los Angeles, California JWPCP effluent outfall tunnel will transport secondary-treated effluent from the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant in Carson to the White Point Manifold. Upon completion, through ground conditions ranging from soils to hard rock, the tunnel will be approx. 7 miles (11 km) long with a finished internal diameter of 18-ft (5.5 m). This paper will present the Tunneling Condition Assessment Report (TCAR) and Tunnel Operation Plan (TOP) developed prior to construction, as well as the actual TBM performances achieved along the northern portion of the alignment in soft ground, shallow cover, and beneath a densely urbanized area.

Long distance, overland conveyors require significant capital outlay of which up to 70% may be contributed to the cost of belting. Significant savings may be achieved by identifying possible risk areas and applying modern technology methods to reduce or eliminate risk. Recently, Sasol Coal commissioned an overland belt conveyor system comprising three belt conveyors of 7 km, 5 km and 4.5 km in length. These were designed and constructed taking the above into consideration. Contained in the paper are the belt conveyor system requirements, designing assumptions and methods applied in the designing process as well as ways and means to eliminate or at least reduce risks.

Zirconium tungstate (ZrW2O8) is a unique material with a negative coefficient of thermal expansion. In order to fully utilize this material as a filler, a surface treatment needs to be developed to better improve the wetting and dispersion capabilities of the filler. This paper describes an initial study to characterize the filler as well as investigate fatty acid and silane surface treatments for eventual compounding with thermosetting matrices. It was found that ZrW20, has a point-of- zero charge between pH 2.7-3.0, and that both fatty acid and organofunctional silane treatments appear to be viable surface treatments for this unique filler.

The US Bureau of Mines compared column flotation using either fine or coarse bubbles with conventional flotation on a Montana chromite ore. On deslimed ore, fine-bubble column flotation produced a &.7% Cr2O3-grade rougher concentrate with 87% recovery, compared with 43.8% and 43.5% Cr2O3-grade rougher concentrates with 85% and 77% recovery for coarse-bubble column flotation and conventional flotation, respectively. On undeslimed ore, coarse- and fine-bubble column flotation produced rougher concentrates containing approximately 41.5% Cr2O3 with 95% recovery, exceeding conventional flotation, which produced 35.6% Cr2O3 -grade concentrates with 87% recovery.

Natural aggregate – sand, gravel, and crushed stone – is the number one non-energy mineral resource in the world in terms of both volume and value. A plan for the sustainable development of aggregate resources can include: 1) policies and economic incentives to encourage identification and protection of potential resources, 2)efficient quarrying and processing of aggregate, 3) efficient use of primary aggregates, 4) greater use of recycled, waste, or substitute material, 5) inclusion of costs of all environmental impacts in price of material, 6) reclamation to beneficial secondary uses, and 7)identification of objectives, targets, actions, and sustainability indicators. Quarrying can also contribute to sustainable ecosystems through natural habitat reclamation.
