Underground coal gasification (UCG) is becoming more popular as the reserves of good quality, mineable coal are starting to diminish, and yet the global energy demand from coal is still increasing. The purpose of this research project was to investigate cavity formation within a coal block due to the combustion reactions in the context of UCG. The cavity plays a pivotal role in the UCG process, as it is essentially the gasification reactor. Cavity formation in an in situ gasification process using the forward combustion linking method (FCL) had been investigated, and a laboratory model was created to simulate the process. The experiment was performed by drilling a U-shaped tunnel into a coal block, which was then combusted internally with air that was fed through an injection hole. A heating element (at approximately 500°C) was used to supply the required heat for combustion at the base of the injection well. The coal blocks were analysed using micro-focus X-ray tomography. The tomography results showed that the coal tended to crack along the bedding plane after a short duration of combustion, due to either the formation of clinker or the expansion of swelling vitrinite along the horizontal tunnel. The deposit was thicker at the base of the injection well compared to the base of the production well; this may have been caused by the turbulence of the air flow and the relatively high oxygen concentration at the base of the injection well. A comparison of the results with work by Daggupati et al. (2010) showed the same trend, despite the slightly different methodology applied.

A General Meeting and Colloquium was held in Kelvin House, Johannesburg on Wednesday 29th September, 1971. The theme of the Colloquium was "The Ferro-alloy Industry". Prof D. D. Howat (President) was in the Chair. The meeting was attended by 106 delegates and was opened by the President at 10.05 a.m. OBITUARY The President: "It is my sad duty to announce the death of G. C. I welcome the new members to the Institute and congratulate those members who have been transferred to a higher grade. COLLOQUIUM The first paper, presented by Mr S. Selmer-Olsen, Consulting Metallurgist, Amcor Limited, on 'Trends in Ferro Alloy Production' was published in the May issue of the Journal and comprised information and data relating to new developments in ferro alloy production in various parts of the world. This was followed by a paper-'Conductivity and Viscosity Properties of Slags produced in ferro-alloy manufacture' by D. 1. Ossin et al. This was a record of laboratory test work on slags containing both lime and magnesia, corresponding with the composition of slags encountered in the production of ferro chrome alloys when a dolomite flux is employed. The third paper-'Review of the work of the Pyrometallurgical Research Group of N.I.M. and Metallurgy Department, Wits.' presented by Dr P. R. Jochens, leader of the Research Group, outlined the progress made on ten different research projects presently under way in the Department of Metallurgy. These projects range from studies of the kinetics and mechanism of the reduction of chromite ores through the determination of the activities of MnO in slags to phase studies and melting point determinations in the alloy systems Cr-Fe-Si-C and Cr-Fe-Si. A new feature of this Colloquium was the introduction of the discussion panel composed of four or five individuals known to have special knowledge or interest in the subject under duscussion. Mr J. J. Coetzee was chairman of the first panel, Professor D. D. Howat of the second and Dr R. E. Robinson of the third. During the discussion of Mr Selmer-Olsen's paper an interesting contribution was made by Mr Jack Hayley of Transalloys (Pty.) Limited who pointed out that the lowest power cost in the U.S.A. was that from the TV A at 6 mils per unit (0,43 cents S.A.) while costs from other sources were 7 to 8 mils per unit (0,50 to 0,57 cents S.A.) He also referred to the use of 'pile sintering' of ore fines plus coke at certain ferro alloy plants in the V.S. and to the recent practice of 'graphitising' the paste used for Soderberg electrodes. The last session in the afternoon was devoted to a group discussion on 'Practical problems in Arc Furnace Operation', Mr H. R. Reid of Middelburg Steel Alloys (Pty) Limited occupying the chair, members of the panel being Mr J. Meintjies (Rand Carbide Limited), Mr J. Benn (Amcor) and Mr E. J. Jackson (Transalloys (Pty.) Limited). Mr Reid initiated the discussion by talking of the design and composition of electrode shoes, mentioning the use of the 85/15 Cu/Zn alloy and the comparison of hollow shoes and shoes cooled by tubes. Mr Meintjies discussed electrode management with particular reference to breakages, and dealt with casing and fin design and the welding of fins. Mr Benn dealt with aspects of closed top furnace operation with particular reference to the control of eruptions in the furnace and indicated that preheating of the raw materials might be well worth considering together with the development of a system for the detection of the water vapour present. Mr J ackson was concerned with shells, linings, refractories and tap holes. He deprecated the use of oxygen for opening the tap hole emphasising how uncontrolled use of oxygen led to loss of shape of the tap hole and quite severe burning out of the front hole resulting in time and labour in repairs. A notable feature of the Colloquium was the free discussion 'from the floor' of the hall. Many valuable and highly pertinent contributions were made spontaneously and usually in reply to some controversial topic raised by the discussion group.

Discussion H. J. S. Kriek*: During 1956 Iscor became interested in the acid smelting in a blast furnace of siliceous ores containing 15 per cent silica. This interest was as a result of the successful acid smelting in Germany at a CaO/SiO2-ratio of between 0.4 and 0.8. Acid smelting can become an economic proposition due to a reduction in slag volume accompanied by a lowering of the coke rate. Paschke and Hannel1 found that a free flowing slag (i.e. viscosities of less than two poise) would not be obtained at C/S-ratios lower than 0.82 and that the addition of 3 to 4 per cent alkalies became necessary. In titanium bearing slags it was established that maximum fluidity is obtained with 10 per cent TiO2. Acid smelting resulted in increased sulphur pickup with decreasing O/S-ratio and desulphurization with soda-ash outside the blast furnace was necessary. At Iscor Mr B. B. Segal established that, for slags with (CaO+MgO)/SiO2-ratios of 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7, the addition of alkalies and TiO2 resulted in a substantial decrease in melting point and also of viscosity. At a (CaO+ MgO)/ ratio of 0.53 the addition of 10 per cent TiO2 is as effective as the addition of 3.75 per cent alkalies. This means that a blast furnace can be run without the addition of alkalies and consequently the detrimental effect of alkalies on the lining can be avoided; also that fluid slags with 5 to 15 per cent MgO and 8 to 10 per cent Al203 can be obtained with 10 per cent TiO present. (CaO+ MgO)/SiO2-ratios smaller than 0.5 the addition of titania resulted in a decrease in melting point and also in an increase in viscosity. In ceramic crucibles the slag did not become more viscous with time but thickened appreciably when held in graphite crucibles. No titanium carbonitride could be detected and only Ti20a was found. Prof Howat also did not obtain the TiC-TiN solid solution and therefore it appears that the thickening of the slag is not solely due to the formation of the titanium carbonitrides. This is in agreement with the work of Michailov and Belyakova2 who found that TiO2 decreased the viscosity of acid slags and increased the viscosity of basic slags; that titanium sesquioxide (Ti203) and titanium monoxide (TiO) increased the viscosity of both acid and basic slags and that titanium carbide, which is found in larger amounts in basic slags than in acid slags, considerably increases the viscosity of both acid and basic slags. Patzak et al3 describes the following oxygen deficient titanias, viz Ti2O, TiO, Ti203, Ti3O5, Ti4O7, Ti5O9, Ti6O11- Ti10O9,Ti7O13,Ti8O15 and Ti9O17. Until about 1959 a fair amount of data was available on the viscosity of normal slags to which titania was added2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. At Iscor an electromagnetic viscometer based on the viscometer developed by Bockris10 was built. Progress was very slow as our main attention was centred around problems associated with the operation of the Rotor process. During 1962 and 1963 two papers containing fundamental work on the viscosities of slags in the systems CaO-SiO2-TiO211 and CaO-SiO2-TiO2 at 0 per cent A1203, 10 per cent Al203 and 20 per cent Al20312 appeared. The work of Ross and Ohno obviated the necessity of any further work by Iscor on the viscosity of blast furnace slags containing titania. Ross gave the following optimum compositions for blast furnace slags containing titania. Titania % Lime % Silica % Lime/Silica-ratio 20 30-42 38-50 0.6-1.10 30 27-36 34-43 0.63-1.06 40 24-32 28-36 0.66-1.14 The optimum temperature is 1,500°C because at this temperature the largest workable composition range exists. Higher temperatures result in narrower optimum composition ranges and in increased rates of thickening. The factors affecting the rate of thickening were also investigated by Ross and Ohno, as the main problem with slags containing titania is not finding compositions which are fluid at operating temperatures but the thickening due to a lack of oxygen. With these slags when there is insufficient oxygen to co-ordinate each silicon atom with its own individual shell of four oxygen ions, some sharing of oxygen ions must occur, resulting in the formation of large silicate ions and a rise in viscosity. The formation of oxygen deficient titania can be prevented as long as iron oxide or manganese oxide remain in the liquid slag. Iwase13 and also Viens, Camp bell and Rogers14 obtained in the experimental smelting of ilmenite ores fluid slags with more than 3 to 5 per cent manganese oxide and ferrous oxide in the slags. It appears that titaniferous ores can be smelted in blast furnaces under the following conditions: (1) Acid slag operation, i.e. at C/S-ratios from O.6-1.0. (2) Dolomite can be used as a flux as MgO is a network modifier. (3) The Al2O3-content must be less than 15 per cent as alumina promotes thickening of the slag and decreases the optimum composition range. (4) The hearth temperature must not exceed 1,500°C. According to Ross a definite amount of energy is required for each ton of iron produced and in order to increase production an increase in heat

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Tech (Mining Engineering) degree The purpose of this study is to establish whether to mine the Bottom of Pit (BOP)/TOB 4 reserve before the commencement of the Block Cave or whether this should be disregarded and the reserve be extracted at the end of the life of the Cave. The primary goal of this report is to investigate and propose a practical mining method to safely extract the reserve given the set constraints. This report quantifies the additional revenue the TOB 4 will contribute to Finsch?s overall NPV thus enhancing Finsch?s business case and strategically enhancing the SBP. Several underground mining options have been investigated. The proposed mining method includes the installation of a series of extraction tunnels below the TOB 4 reserve from 53 level, with a slot access tunnel system. Ground will be loaded by LHDs from the draw points and tipped into 50-ton dump trucks at a transfer point, from there the ground will be transported to 53 level No. 1groundpass where it will join the existing ground-handling system. Primary development is scheduled to begin October 2002 and last for a period of approximately 7 months until early April 2003.The production is broken into 4 phases. Phase 1 is scheduled to begin mid-April 2003. The final production phase will be completed by November 2005. The production scheduling has been designed in order to remain ahead of the Block 4 undercut in order to ensure stability and safety. Due cognisance was taken of the health and safety of all employees concerned during the design of the mining and ground-handling processes for the Bottom of Pit. As far as is reasonably practicable, the BOP was designed and will be constructed and equipped to provide conditions for the safe operation of machinery and a healthy working environment for people underground. Relevant requirements of the Mine Health and Safety Act regulations pertaining to mining operations have been identified and adhered to during all phases of the design process.

Metal powder compaction offers unique advantages in the manufacture of net-shape components using techniques such as laser sintering, conventional press and sintering, metal injection moulding, direct rolling, direct forging, and hot isostatic pressing. If the output from the primary metal production process is in powder form, then considerable cost and energy savings can be realized by direct conversion to semi-finished or final shapes. This possibility exists for titanium and possibly also for Ta, Zr, Hf, and Nb metals. However, these attractive benefits are associated with some significant risks. The high surface-to-volume ratio of powder particles coupled with the reactive nature of these metals means that special care must be taken when handling them. Powder explosions are unfortunately still a regular occurrence internationally and these often result in serious injury and loss of life. Even seemingly 'safe' compounds such as sugar, flour, and grain can be extremely hazardous when handled or milled and dust clouds are produced. In addition, exposure to airborne particles can have adverse effects on the human body, especially when particles are inhaled on a regular basis. Furthermore, the medical consequences of these are not fully understood, especially in the case of nanoparticles. The impact is often not observed immediately and debilitating illnesses may emerge only years or decades later. As far as is known, there are no South African guidelines for handling of metal powders. This paper attempts to provide an awareness of the risks associated with metal powders (including those produced indirectly by other metalworking/finishing operations) as well as some guidelines for their safe handling, based on international best practices.

Nkomati Nickel JV exploits the ores of the Uitkomst Complex near Machadodorp in the Waterval Boven district in South Africa?s Mpumalanga Province. Due to factors such as the remote location, stellar growth in production, opencast mining methods, and ore characteristics, a number of innovative processing options were selected. Nkomati has undertaken numerous initiatives over the last few years to improve plant running times, metallurgical performance, and operational profitability. Great emphasis has been placed on effectiveness of management control systems. A number of initiatives such as short interval control and time?in-state metrics have been implemented. A focus on improvement on availability and asset utilization of key items of equipment has been particularly effective. While the ores are remarkably similar to the Merensky and UG2 reefs, the relatively high base metal sulphide content and mineralogical characteristics make metallurgical treatment somewhat different to the ores of the Bushveld Complex. The low head grades and flotation kinetics distinguish Nkomati from other base metal operations. Numerous milling and flotation optimization initiatives have resulted in dramatic improvements in throughput, recoveries, and concentrate grades. This paper discusses the metallurgical, operational, and management challenges and the outcomes obtained.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Hons) in Chemical Engineering Diamond synthesis has attracted a great deal of interest because of its exceptional properties and various applications. In this study, the chemical catalytic vapour deposition (CCVD) method was used to synthesize diamond films using acetylene as carbon source and hydrogen as carrier gas at a temperature of 1000°C, and their thermodynamic stability was studied. Photographic analysis revealed that these products are diamond films, Ramman spectroscopy confirmed that they are graphitic while confocal laser scanning microscopic image analyses proved that these diamonds films have structural defects due to iron impurity from the catalyst precursor. The quantity of diamonds films produced is also proportional to the acetylene to hydrogen ratio but these films are larger in size at lower acetylene to hydrogen ratio. Thermogravimetric analyses showed that transformation of these materials begins at 25°C but could not be used to determine if a temperature range below 25°C exists. The stability of these CCVD-synthesized diamonds also increases below 25°C when stored at different temperatures.

"A ‘geologically constrained’ orebody model has long been hailed as vital for a Mineral Resource statement that is compliant with the South African Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (SAMREC Code). In this paper, the requirements for geological modelling as contained in the outline for the SAMREC Code are considered, and whether the new modelling software available on the market is a ‘black box’ or is better for modelling than traditional methods of wireframe creation.Implicit geological modelling is a technique that uses a radial basis function to establish and update geological models relatively quickly and efficiently from borehole data, outcrop data, manually interpreted vertical or horizontal sections, and structural data. Assays and any coded drill-hole data, such as lithology and alteration, can be interpolated.Leapfrog Geo software is an example of this new approach to geological modelling. A case study of a short training course in geological modelling for non-geologists at the University of Witwatersrand, as part of the Higher Certificate in Mineral Resource Management, is presented. The benefits of this type of geological modelling software are considered for this type of assignment as well as for mining industry applications.The use of geological models in mine planning is reviewed and a case study is presented comparing the variations in mine plan design and financial output of 13 final-year Mine Design projects from the University of the Witwatersrand School of Mining Engineering. These designs were all based on the same geological model created in the traditional way, and yet the resultant mine designs were significantly different, with very different resulting financial outlooks for the project. This raises questions as to how significant a very detailed model in the pre-feasibility and feasibility phases of projects really is, considering the huge costs involved in gathering the required data to build a SAMREC-compliant geological model."

Mining has always been, and still is, an activity which is vital for the development of mankind. This is because a predominant proportion of industrial products and energy is produced from raw materials that are excavated using mining methods. The need for environmental protection and the close proximity of urban settlements and mines in Slovenia have necessitated ever stricter requirements for the excavation of raw materials and the introduction of more environmentally-friendly mining methods. This is achieved by implementing a closed eco-technological cycle of raw material excavation within the scope of mining methods. In surface mines, this means prompt reclamation of the degraded surfaces, and in underground mines the use of methods with minimized impact on the surface and on underground water. In underground mines, mining methods with backfilling installed according to the multi-barrier disposal system are the only ones that allow the possibility of implementing a closed eco-techno-logical cycle of excavating raw materials. Various industrial waste materials are also included in the backfilling material in order to improve its strength properties. Backfilling consisting of several different waste materials is produced in the form of a composite. Before backfilling consisting of waste material composites can even begin to be used in mines, an environmental impact assessment of its suitability for mines needs to be made. In order to make such an assessment, a pressure leaching cell and an open diffusion cell were made, i.e. a pressure leachate test and a sorption test were developed. The two cells and the developed tests will enable the study of the influence of backfilling on the environment if installed in an underground mine. The pressure leachate test performed with the use of the pressure leaching cell simulates leaching from a consolidated backfill during the seeping of underground water into the backfilling material under pressure. The sorption test performed in an open diffusion cell simulates the flow of eluate leached from the backfilling material through the rock/geotechnical barrier. The two tests were developed in such a manner that they are performed either in succession immediately after one another, but they can also be performed separately at a certain time interval. The paper presents an assessment of the suitability of backfilling made of different waste material composites. Traditionally, bottle roll tests have been used to optimize the extraction process for best gold extraction and recovery. Such tests typically involve exposing the ore to defined reagent concentrations (lime, cyanide and sufficient oxygen) and balance the gold input with recoveries and losses. With mounting pressures to accommodate sustainability issues during development work, it became apparent that much more information would be required on the interactions and kinetic behaviour of solid and solution species during the entire leach process. This information is vital to enable proactive management of critical issues such as cyanide, arsenic, water and tailings management. Inadequate management of these aspects has led to temporary closures and, in cases of non-compliance, to the dynamically changing regulations. MINTEK?s advanced leach facility (ALF) is being developed with the aim of bridging the knowledge gap between the gold leach process and the predictable environmental impacts upon discharge. The facility aims to monitor all parameters of relevance such as pH, Eh, dissolved oxygen, metals, cyanide species, and viscosity during the entire process to enable more informed decisions on practical interventions. The presented set of data reflects first experiences gained from processing a refractory gold ore concentrate. Attempts at optimizing the process were limited due to the developmental nature of the work. Data relating to leaches with differing preoxidation conditions and cyanide staging is presented.

The lining, together with the electrodes, forms the heart of the operation of a submerged arc furnace. Subsequent to a lining failure on M12 furnace during the early 1980s, Metalloys was active in investigating the concept of thermally efficient ?freeze? linings for its furnaces. The theory revolved around that, not only would, thermally efficient linings result in significant cost savings, but they would also last longer as a result of being subjected to less harsh operational conditions. After having proved the concept on the .smaller. furnaces, Metalloys decided to implement the concept on its largest submerged arc furnace, M12 Subsequent to having recovered from an impending failure of a lining installed in 1981 in M12 in the mid 1980s, Metalloys managed, through rigid lining management, to extend the life of this lining to 1999. At the end of 1999 the decision to replace the lining in the furnace with a ?freeze? lining was made and planning and design proceeded in earnest. This paper discusses the options considered in making the final decision. The features of the design of the lining are also discussed. Consideration is given to the furnace shell cooling system as a result of its importance in maintaining the thermal equilibrium in the lining. Note is made of the fact that the purchase of a .freeze. lining is an expensive exercise but that the time savings in the installation of the lining and the efficiency improvements during operation far outweigh the additional capital cost. The experience on M12 has been that the payback period of the marginal capital expenditure is less than three years. As a result of the opportunity to reline a furnace the size of M12 not presenting itself very often, the learning points from the installation of the lining and the operational advantages and disadvantages are significant. Finally, the point is made that the project had its pros and cons but overall the success of the project has been evident and, as such, the ?freeze? lining is likely to become the norm at Metalloys.

Charcoal is an interesting reducing agent because it is produced from growing wood which is renewable and does not contribute to global warming, provided that there is a balance between the felling of timber and growth of trees. In the biocarbon project the possibilities for using charcoal is investigated as well as other biological based and renewable reductants for ferroalloy production. The background for the project is that the Norwegian ferroalloy producers wish to contribute to reduction of CO2- emissions. This paper focuses on the use of charcoal instead of coke for the production of manganese alloys, and the consequences of doing so. Results from practical SiMn smelting experiments on a pilot scale have previously been reported, where only 12-14 % Si in the metal was obtained when charcoal was used. Recently we have attained satisfactory 18 %Si also for charcoal, but good results are indeed dependant on good furnace performance. There is no tradition for using charcoal for manganese production in Norway. A change from using mainly coke to the use of some charcoal will demand new routines for furnace operation, raw material and off-gas handling. Hence, characteristic properties of charcoal, which may cause change of furnace operation, have been measured and are compared to coke. The following results are presented: ?Thermal abrasion strength together with CO2- reactivity; important parameters for the performance of the upper part of the furnace. ?Coke-bed resistance; it will increase with the use of charcoal (a review of new results). ?Slag reactivity; a relevant method for testing slag reactivity of industrial reductants is of interest. The suggested method can serve for comparing slag reactivities towards graphite.

CODELCO is considering the implementation of high-density tailings management at the Chuquicamata mine in northern Chile for its long term disposal plan. To achieve this, CODELCO commissioned the design, construction, and operation of a 70 t/d pilot plant, fed by existing tailings. The testing programme was completed in May 2011, and consisted of laboratory rheological and characterization assessments, pipe loop testing, beaching trials, and analyses of deposition behaviour for solid contents ranging from 57?68% (w/w). This paper describes the characteristics of the pilot plant, the testing programme, the beach trial analyses, and the resulting beach profile predictions based on the stream power theory. CODELCO also used other predictive beach slope methods, such as the equilibrium slope concept, which are not discussed in this paper. The final beach profile for design will be selected after an expert analysis of all methods has been completed.

Eutectic freeze crystallization (EFC) is a novel technique for the recovery of pure salt and pure water from hypersaline waste brines. It is therefore a promising technology for the treatment of industrial waste waters. The impurities caused by crystallizing salt out of multi-component brines by EFC have not yet been investigated, however. To these ends, the selenium impurity found in sodium sulphate, produced from the waste brine of a platinum operation, was investigated. It was believed that the similarity between sulphate and selenate ions allowed isomorphous substitution of selenate ions into the sodium sulphate crystals, which was the likely cause of impurity uptake. It was found that the presence of sodium chloride in the industrial brine promotes the uptake of selenium, while ionic strength of the brine and mass deposition rate of sodium sulphate did not have a significant effect on the selenium uptake. Isomorphous substitution is predicted to be the most significant mechanism by which all impurities will be taken up when applying EFC to other industrial waste brines.

A pilot plant paste thickening campaign was conducted at the Anglo Platinum Limited Mogalakwena South Concentrator plant in South Africa in order to determine the water saving capability of P&TT technology. In the process a simple water consumption model was developed for estimating the overall water consumption of the mine. Traditional risk quantification methods provide little information on the sources of risk, and tend to produce static over-conservative evaluations, which do not account for changes in the performance of the project. Capital investment decisions for large mining projects require more complex risk evaluation models that include the value of flexibility and the different risk levels associated with uncertainty on project variables (price, grade, dilution, and production rates, among many other). In this context, real option valuation (ROV) methods have proven potential to quantify the risk associated with such variables and integrate alternative scenarios and management strategies into the evaluation process. In this paper, a risk quantification model is developed that successfully quantifies the risk associated with dilution, as a function of production rate. Selective Blast Mining (SBM) makes use of milli-second sequential blasting technology to separate the valuable reef material from waste rock in the blasting operation at stope faces in the mining of tabular ore bodies such as exist in the gold and platinum mines in South Africa. The waste rock is cast blast to the back of the stoping area, and the reef material is fractured and deposited close to the stope face. Only the reef material is transported to the surface. A simplified economic model is presented to evaluate the economic benefits of SBM. Although premature, in that adequate experimental demonstration of the validity of the model has not yet been possible, the model is presented since it indicates substantial benefits in the case of narrow reef gold mines. It is suggested that many marginal mines should seriously consider SBM. Benefits can also be realised in platinum mines, but a lot more experimental work is necessary to establish cost parameters more reliably. Some practical experience in the use of SBM in the mining of the UG2 reef is presented.

Although not fully accepted in South Africa, the Theory of Sampling originally proposed by Pierre Gy is fast becoming the cornerstone of sampling practice throughout the world. The growing acceptance of Gy?s Theory of Sampling in South Africa can be attributed to a number of factors, chief amongst them being the development of a tradable mineral asset market, the promulgation of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA), the growing number of commercial and academic courses that are offered on sampling, and the regulation of the industry through internationally acceptable guidelines and rules for reporting and trading in mineral assets. The size of the South African minerals industry and the dependence of our economy on mineral production have also meant that correct sampling is of key importance to mineral trade. ISO standards have been the principal guides for producers of mineral bulk commodities who produce to customers? specifications, whereas Gy?s insights have been most readily accepted by precious and base metals producers whose product is sold into metal markets. Understanding of small-scale variability is essential in the precious and base-metal industries, but detailed studies of the effects of heterogeneity have not been as productive in the bulk commodities. Sampling practices at different stages of mineral development from exploration, face sampling and grade control, ore processing and handling, metallurgical sub-sampling, point of sale sampling, and sampling in the laboratory are considered in the gold, platinum, ferrous metal, and coal industries. A summary of the impact of poor sampling in these industries is presented. Generally it appears that poor sampling practice is most likely to erode mineral asset value at the early stages of mineral development. The benefits of good sampling are considered, especially with regard to the financial implications of bias and error on large and consistent consignments of bulk commodities. A diverse selection of rockbolt designs and resin anchors are available for use in underground mines. Research in recent years at the UNSW Mining Research Centre led to the construction of a rockbolt pull-testing facility. This facility has subsequently been upgraded, commissioned and initial test work has been completed to verify the pull-test process. A test program has been completed with the objective to understand the load transfer mechanism and improve the general performance of rockbolts. This paper describes the results of this research. Faites des recherches ces dernières années à l'UNSW que le Centre de la Recherche Minier a mené à la construction d'une facilité de l'essai de la traction du rockbolt. Cette facilité a été améliorée par la suite, le travail de l'épreuve en commission et initial a été complété pour vérifier le processus de la traction-épreuve. Un programme de l'épreuve a été complété avec l'objectif comprendre le mécanisme du transfert de la charge et améliorer la performance générale de rockbolts. Kriging is an interpolation technique for predicting unobserved responses at target locations from observed responses at specified locations. Kriging predictors are best linear unbiased predictors (BLUPs) and the precision of the BLUP is assessed by the mean square prediction error (MSPE), commonly known as the kriging variance. Both the BLUP and the MSPE depend on the covariance function describing the spatial correlation between locations and on specific parameters. The parameters are usually treated as known, whereas in practice they invariably have to be estimated and the empirical BLUP (that is, the EBLUP) so obtained. The empirical or estimated mean square prediction error (EMSPE), or the so called ?plug-in? kriging variance estimator, underestimates the true kriging variance of the EBLUP, at least in general. In this paper five estimators for the kriging variance of the EBLUP are considered and compared by means of a simulation study in which a Gaussian distribution for the responses, an exponential structure for the covariance function, and three levels of spatial correlation ? weak, moderate, and strong ? are adopted. The Prasad-Rao estimator obtained using restricted or residual maximum likelihood (REML) is recommended for moderate and strong spatial correlation and the Kacker-Harville estimator for weak correlation in the random fields.
