Geometallurgy - the science of predicting the behaviour of ores along the value chain based on their geological and mineralogical characteristics - has barely moved beyond process minerology studies. These studies typically link process behaviour to the mineralogical and microstructural characteristics of pristine or processed ores in a qualitative or semi-quantitative manner. Eventually, a trial-and-error optimisation of the operation is achieved. However, to deliver on its promise, geometallurgy should progress beyond this current approach to a fully quantitative understanding of process behaviour, including the various uncertainties involved, namely predictive geometallurgy. One of the barriers currently hindering this development is the neglect of most ore characterisation data obtained in geometallurgical studies. This is mostly due to the large extent of this information exceeding the capacity of conventional software. To address this challenge, we developed a data mining platform consisting of an SQL database, an R front-end in-house package, and back-ends to interpret data from several analytical instruments. This platform enables the use of the statistical and data mining power of the R open-source environment for any geometallurgical study. Potential applications range from ore characterisation to process understanding and forecasting, and from geostatistical prediction to operational control and optimisation. The scripting abilities of R allow for the: 1) processing of many streams in loops, thus freeing the user from repeating tedious click-and-drop tasks; 2) computation of virtually any derivate or aggregate quantity from the data; 3) distribution of the work among several processor clusters; and 4) keeping of a log file for the calculations done. This contribution presents the building blocks of this platform, and illustrates with several examples its potential to enable predictive geometallurgy. The Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) requires mining companies to make four key appointments as part of their tailings management structure. These four positions are an Accountable Executive with policymaking responsibilities, a Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer with operational responsibility, an Engineer of Record to ensure facilities are designed, operated, and closed safely, and an Independent Tailings Review Board to assess safety drivers regularly. Little guidance on the traits of these individuals is available in a South African context. Consequently, the tailings community of practice was surveyed to develop a table of ideal competencies and establish the flexibility in meeting these traits.

Mine closures have traditionally prioritised environmental rehabilitation, often overlooking the deep socio-economic disruptions that follow, particularly in mining-dependent communities. This paper argues that mine closure should not mark the end of prosperity but rather the beginning of a sustainable transition. The coproduction model, which integrates community participation, governance, and economic planning, offers a transformative approach to closure planning. Drawing on case studies from Ghana, Zambia, and Indonesia, this research examines the successes and failures of past closures, highlighting the critical role of stakeholder engagement, skills development, and economic diversification. By incorporating emerging technologies such as AI-driven economic forecasting, blockchain for governance transparency, and decentralised finance (DeFi) models, mining companies can ensure a just and sustainable post-mining future. This study challenges outdated closure models and presents a forward-looking strategy that sees mine closure not as an endpoint, but as a catalyst for social resilience and economic transformation. It underscores the need for policy reforms, stronger governance, and investment in alternative industries to prevent mining towns from becoming economic wastelands. By shifting the paradigm from remediation to regeneration, this research calls for a new era of mine closure planning that puts people and prosperity at its core.

The real cost of any mining incident has, empirically, proven to be estimation-driven, rather than factdriven. One of the main reasons for this lies with the complexity of the cost composition of any given mining incident. Incident costs comprise both direct and indirect cost factors, and in many cases the costs associated with these factors are incurred during different time periods following the incident. In this paper we aim to identify the various cost factors arising from mining incidents, provide a thorough understanding of all the potential cost factors identified, and draw general conclusions on the knowledge obtained. Furthermore, recommendations are made on how mining companies could use the results, in order to assist them in calculating the costs of mining incidents. The paper also provides suggestions for further research, with the emphasis on the most significant immeasurable cost factors, namely the costs of implementing job accommodations following an incident, the harm to company reputation, and the decreased productivity due to low worker morale/psychological factors following an incident. If mining companies are aware of and understand which factors could contribute to the cost of any given incident, future planning and incident cost estimations could be easier. It should, however, be noted that although this study provides a comprehensive list of cost factors (and detailed explanations), other unknown cost factors relating to mine incidents could prevail in extreme cases.

The development of a post-mining economy is generally framed as accessible and desirable and something that mining companies, consultants, and the government can, and should, plan for. It is indeed possible. Yet, most mining regions, other than the big metropolitan municipalities, find economic diversification after mining challenging, despite their grand plans, consultant reports, and company intentions. Their efforts blind them to other ideas that are often prerequisites to diversification. This paper highlights some economic and social misconceptions about economic diversification and explains where planning goes wrong. Mistakes typically stem from ignorance and misunderstandings. Planners and policy makers fail to grasp the essential requirements for economic diversification. They underestimate the structural constraints created by mining. They do not see how mine rehabilitation is linked to economic diversification. They generally do not understand the South African space economy or the nature of new economies. The paper also proposes a more careful consideration of those economic aspects that mining cities have control over, such as land use management and infrastructure. The paper further explains how understanding long-term dependencies can help prevent governance failures. The social disruption that accompanies mine decline and closure must be recognised and dealt with. The mines must plan for decline as a way to resuscitate the economy. It concludes with a framework for assessing and developing a post-mining economy.

In dealing with transformational aspects, the South African Constitution aspires for a balance between attempts to broadly represent the country’s demographics in the way in which organizations are structured and the need to maintain the necessary skills to ensure continual retention of skills for optimum and efficient organizational performance. Through the Mining Charter, government aimed to redress gender and racial imbalances in the mining industry as part of transforming the demographic representation of mining companies to include black people, women, and people living with disabilities in all job levels up to top management. While the Constitution calls for an appropriate balance between demographic representation and competency, this aspiration for mining poses challenges for companies due to the proficient and competent skills needed in this industry. To this end, the South African mining industry has been subjected to substantial criticism from government regarding the slow progress of transformation. The mining industry justifies its slow pace of transformation by pointing at inconsistent, varying legislation and definitions governing transformation, limited skills available from historically disadvantaged groups, and cautioning not to compromise the sustainability of mining companies by marginalizing white males and white youth with the objective of addressing racial imbalances. This lack of understanding between industry and the government has led to considerable confusion regarding the accountability of stakeholders in transforming the industry. This article presents the perspectives of ten mining executives on transformation in the South African mining industry. The theoretical description of transformation, as well as other mining stakeholders’ interpretations of transformation. is presented. Qualitative data from interviews with mining executives demonstrates their understanding of transformation through rich descriptions, interpretations, and implications in their contexts. The findings demonstrate that transformation in the mining industry is not simply about race and gender, but about cultural change, a change in mind-sets, embracing diversity, equalizing rights and opportunities, and attaining social justice. Moreover, transformation is clearly a gradual process. The article concludes with a recommendation for the definition of transformation to be corroborated with the views of mining executives and that of the Constitution of South Africa. This will create an overarching, simplified definition of transformation that can be accepted and interpreted by all stakeholders.

Surface coal operations in which mining activities are conducted above old underground workings experience hot holes after drilling. In a coal mine, hot holes are defined as shot holes, which after being drilled have an in-hole ambient temperature of 40°C or above or show a temperature increase of 3°C or more during monitoring. Hot holes and other cavities, such as cracks, pose health and safety risks to workers, such as exposure to hot air and high concentrations of noxious gases released from these holes. In addition, workers may be exposed to premature detonation of explosives caused by in-hole temperature increases and chemical reactions. To this end, Coaltech Research Association commissioned a project to develop a Best Practice Guideline for the management of hot holes. This paper is a compilation of the activities conducted in the development of the Best Practice Guideline between 2021 and 2022. The activities included a review of standard operating procedures and hot-hole temperature-measuring and -monitoring devices, and the assessment of current hot-hole procedures at selected mines. The results indicated that management of hot holes requires a focus on pre-emptive risk assessment of mining blocks, identification of hot holes using the correct temperature-measuring devices, and continuous monitoring of hot holes from the time of drilling until just before blasting. Hot-hole management accessories, such as polyvinyl chloride sleeves, were found to be effective in insulating the hot-hole emulsion from the rock mass temperature, thus preventing the potential for premature detonation.

"The kinetics of MnO and SiO2 reduction in SiMn slags based on Assmang/Comilog ore and HCFeMn (highcarbon ferromanganese) slag were investigated between 1500 and 1650°C under a CO atmosphere. The results showed that charges containing HCFeMn slag had relatively faster reduction rates than those without. The difference in the driving force for MnO reduction was insignificant among the SiMn slags at 1500°C, which implies a low contribution of the driving force for reduction rate. The slag viscosities were also rather similar, around 1 poise at 1500°C, which could not explain the different reduction rates. Instead, the different charges containing various sulphur contents are believed to give rise to the varying reduction rates. The estimated activation energies for MnO reduction were around 500–920 kJ/mol for charges containing HCFeMn slag, and between 250–300 kJ/mol for those without. Based on the estimated kinetic parameters, the considered rate models were able to describe the reduction of MnO and SiO2 in SiMn slags between 1500 and 1650°C. IntroductionManganese ferroalloys such as ferromanganese (FeMn) and silicomanganese (SiMn) are important ingredients in steel production due to the beneficial effects of manganese on the physical properties of steel. Mn enhances the strength, toughness, and hardness of steel products, and both Mn and Si are used as deoxidizers to prevent the development of porous structures (International Manganese Institute, 2014; Olsen, Tangstad, and Lindstad, 2007; Subramanyam, Swansiger, and Avery, 1990; Tomota et al., 1987).The thermodynamic background of manganese ferroalloys is well established (Olsen, Tangstad and Lindstad, 2007), but kinetic information is rather scarce, especially for the SiMn process (Tranell et al., 2007; Tore-Andre Skjervheim, 1994). "Fatigue is a significant concern in the mining industry as it is a causal or contributing factor in many incidents and accidents. Fatigue can be caused by work- and non-work-related factors. There is a lack of information about associations between demographic and other non-work factors, and fatigue. This study aimed to assess associations between demographic, work, living, and socioeconomic conditions, and lifestyle characteristics, and fatigue at a platinum smelter in South Africa. Eight interviews with management and two focus groups with production workers were conducted, and 75 questionnaires were completed by production and other workers. Both work- and non-work-related factors were considered to be causes of fatigue. These factors included overtime, shift work, high workloads, activities performed outside of work, age, race, housing tenure, diet, sleep disorders, stress, and job satisfaction. In general, higher levels of fatigue were reported by younger participants, those who rented accommodation, ate less healthily, had a sleep disorder, and those with high levels of stress and low job satisfaction. As various demographic, lifestyle, and wellness-related factors were associated with fatigue, both work and non-work contributors should be addressed in fatigue management plans. BackgroundFatigue may be defined as ‘a state of impaired mental and/or physical performance and lowered alertness arising as a result of, or a combination of, hard physical and mental work, health and psychosocial factors or inadequate restorative sleep’ (BHP Billiton, 2005). Williamson et al. (2011) define fatigue as a biological drive for recuperative rest. Sleepiness and fatigue are related, and the terms are often used interchangeably. However, sleepiness, more specifically, can be defined as sleep propensity, or a person’s tendency to fall asleep (Hossain et al., 2003; Shen, Barbera, and Shapiro, 2006).Increasing levels of fatigue and sleepiness are associated with lapses in attention, errors, response slowing, fluctuations in alertness and effort, and impaired attention, working memory, long-term memory, decision-making, and creativity (Alhola and Polo-Kantola, 2007; van Dongen and Dinges, 2000). Fatigue is also associated with adverse effects on mood and impulsive behaviours (Alhola and Polo- Kantola, 2007; Minkel et al., 2011; Schwarz et al., 2013). It is a significant concern in the mining industry as it is commonly identified as a causal or contributing factor in many accidents and injuries (Schutte, 2009). Fatigue can also lead to long-term health problems, including digestive problems, heart disease, stress, and mental illness (Shaw, 2003)."

Automated mineralogical analysis of platinum group minerals (PGM), using the mineral liberation analyser, provides information used to understand flotation efficiency, primarily from a PGM liberation and association standpoint. To date, however, there is no consistent understanding regarding PGM speciation and its impact on floatability. Previous studies of PGM from UG2 ores concluded that a larger dataset is needed from which the various parameters can be modelled. Parameters on telluride, arsenide, sulfurarsenide and alloy species need to be integrated to fully understand the impact of PGM speciation on flotation, and for this, ores other than PGE-sulfide-rich UG2 must be assessed. Flotation rougher rate tests were performed on feed samples from two Platreef ores to determine the flotation response of individual liberated PGM species. This was achieved through automated mineralogical analysis of feed, rougher concentrates and tails. Based on 1529 liberated PGM grains assessed over the circuit for two Platreef ores, preliminary results show that PGM speciation, species grain size and competition from gangue appear to influence floatability in an ‘optimised’ laboratory environment. The Prieska deposit, mined between 1971 and 1991, is one of the world’s top thirty volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) base metal deposits. The Prieska Copper Mine in the Northern Cape Province was closed by Anglovaal when underground mining had extended to depths which did not allow for safe and economic extraction of the deposit at the time. The mine has a recorded historical production of over 1 Mt of zinc and 430 k tonnes of copper from 46.8 Mt of milled sulphide ore, achieving life-ofmine metal recoveries of 85% for copper and 84% for zinc into high quality concentrates (refer ORN ASX release 15 Nov 2019). Orion Minerals Ltd is currently investigating the feasibility of developing a new mine in the footprint of the historical Prieska Copper Mine, using the extensive remaining infrastructure, with the intent of extracting the unmined zinc-copper mineralisation from the Prieska deposit. This paper reports results on the flowsheet development philosophy on the hypogene ore, and challenges encountered in the process. This study initially failed to replicate historic copper and zinc recoveries employing the historic production flowsheet and reagent conditions unmodified on bench scale, as the copper and zinc were co-floating. Flowsheet modifications were therefore made to improve differential flotation and recovery, resulting in achieving comparable saleable products and recoveries from processing the hypogene ore on bench scale. Flotation variability test work on the hypogene ore focused on the use of the original flotation procedure and reagent suite using a sodium cyanide-zinc sulphate depressant system on the copper circuit, and it generated a saleable copper product of 20-26% Cu grade at 80-86% recovery. The zinc circuit generated a saleable zinc product grading at 48-55% Zn at 80-94% recoveries. Some zinc losses were due to the deportment of some zinc in sauconite. Optimising the throughput of a mining network comprising all equipment from shovels to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills is a complicated task, yet the potential benefits can be significant. Key modelling challenges stem from the sheer number of possible routes which material can travel, different equipment operating under different constraints, and the rate of SAG mills being calculated through a nonlinear function of the blended materials’ rock attributes. Nevertheless, this is an ideal onapplication area of mathematical programming, a branch of operations research. This paper describes an application of mixed integer linear programming (MILP) to optimise the mining equipment network of one of the world’s largest copper mines.The model takes as input a year-long monthly mine schedule of shovels in different pits, pushbacks, sequences and faces which produce material to be moved through a network of crushers, conveyors, silos, distributors, stockpiles and SAG mills, ultimately outputting a daily operational plan for all equipment that maximises the throughput of the network. All operational constraints and business rules are considered, including three quality attributes of copper ore. Comparing model results with actual data shows an improvement of 4.47% in network throughput tonnage. Additionally, although the model is solved using a free, open-source solver, optimal solutions are still achieved within a practical timeframe.

Preconcentration of precious and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, the development and the operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. Ore preconcentration designates an operation consisting of sorting an ore to reduce the quantity of waste material sent to the concentrator. It can be seen as rejecting waste material as much as possible, without compromising the recovery, or as the recovery of as much valuable metal as possible into an optimum mass yield. Benefits of preconcentration are multiple: grinding energy savings, costs reduction, lower environmental footprint, extension of the reserves, etc. However, all of these benefits do not apply simultaneously and are not applicable to each ore type. Technologies employed for preconcentration are highly dependent on ore properties, especially on the particle size at which the gangue is liberated. Thus, from coarser to finer particle sizes, technologies such as screening, ore sorting, gravity separation (Dense Media Separation (DMS) and jigs) and coarse flotation could be used for the rejection of liberated gangue. The difficulty starts when a benchmark is needed to select a suitable technology, especially for low-grade gold deposits. This paper presents the challenges of comparing lab-scale technologies (DMS versus jig) for gold preconcentration. The experimental data will show to what extent comparing two lab-scale gravity technologies for gold preconcentration can be challenging. An attempt to evaluate the energy savings by assessing the hardness of the tailings after gravity separation will also be presented. "Coal pillars are prone to scaling over time, and are progressively reduced in size and consequently subjected to increased load and reduced strength. The effective factor of safety therefore reduces. Databases of failed and stable pillars cannot, therefore, be regarded as definitive.More than a decade has passed since the first attempt to predict the lifespan of pillars. This paper presents a review based on the new database and pillar strength equations. The methodology for the analysis is based on the fact that pillars scale. The ultimate safety factor (defined as the ratio between strength and load at the time of failure) is derived, followed by an estimate of the rate of pillar scaling, which results in an estimate of the expected time of failure.It is suggested that the predicted lifespan should not be used as an absolute indicator of expected pillar life, but rather as an index – the pillar life index (PLI) – to complement the safety factor and related probability of failure when evaluating pillar stability. A pillar with a predicted lifespan of less than 500 years would be regarded as being in danger of imminent collapse, while a lifespan of at least 1 000 years should be required for long-term purposes.The differences between this analysis and that published in 2003 constitute a strong case for regular reviews of all the empirically based stability indicators, namely the safety factor, probability of failure, and the PLI. Reviews at 10 year intervals appear to be required.The constants in the proposed method are valid only for the Witbank No. 1, 2 and 4 seams and the Highveld No. 2 and 4 seams.IntroductionIt is well known that over time, coal pillars are prone to scaling, and thus are progressively reduced in size and consequently subjected to increased load and reduced strength. In fact, scrutiny of the database of failed pillars indicates that failure occurred after periods ranging from 2 to 49 years, and not immediately after mining.The factor of safety for pillars at the time of failure is not the same as that immediately after mining. The concept of the safety factor is based on the pillar strength obtained by statistical analysis of pillar dimensions immediately, or within a month after mining, when the surveys are conducted. Strictly speaking, the safety factor as commonly used is valid only immediately after mining, and it continues to reduce thereafter. The ideal situation would be to base analyses of pillar strength on pillar dimensions at the time of failure, but that is simply not possible because the real dimensions cannot be measured at that time."

Mineral hydration is known to result in low flotation recoveries and grades within primary platinum group element ores worldwide. This is because the phyllosilicate minerals derived from hydration reactions of silicate minerals (i) form electrostatic coatings on valuable minerals that in turn hinder collector adsorption, (ii) alter the viscosity of the slurry leading to poor gas dispersion and (iii) decrease the concentrate grade due to naturally-floating gangue. Sodium silicate was investigated because its dispersant, rheology modifying, and depressant properties could prove promising in combating the problems associated with these ore types. Quantitative evaluation by scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed large quantities of serpentine and talc present within the ore sample used in this study, which led to a poor flotation response as indicated by batch flotation tests. Using sodium silicate improved the recoveries and grades at high dosages (>1000 g/t). The zeta potential experiments indicate that improved recoveries are, in part, as a result of the reversal of serpentine surface charge, creating electrostatic repulsion between serpentine and valuable minerals which prevents the coating of valuable minerals by serpentine slimes. Ore dilution and rheology tests indicated that decreased viscosity at high dosages also improved recoveries. Talc micro-flotation tests revealed that the depression of talc occurred at higher sodium silicate dosages, which improved concentrate grade. The processing of nearsurface altered ores is becoming an increasing problem worldwide and the use of sodium silicate proved valuable in mitigating the problems associated with the altered ore investigated in this study. The interactions between apatite and hematite were studied through zeta potential and stability experiments, for this paper. The zeta potential measurements were conducted in both background electrolyte and mineral supernatants. The difference in electrokinetic properties of minerals in the presence and absence of supernatant was explained in terms of the dissolution of minerals and the subsequent readsorption of dissolved species at the mineral-water interface. The stability measurements in individual and mixed mineral systems were also performed to identify the extent of interaction between apatite and hematite upon their direct contact. The results from stability measurements in individual and mixed mineral systems indicate that there is an interaction between apatite and hematite. The expanded facility, expected to come on-line in 1995, will be the largest single-plant producer of stainless steel in the world, and the company will rank sixth overall in world production.

Room-and-pillar mining is commonly employed for the extraction of rock salt in undergroundmines. Pillar stress is a major concern in these mines as it is directly related to stability and mineralrecovery. In this study a flat jack method was used to measure pillar stresses in three undergroundrock salt mines in Pakistan. The field work included determination of in-situ stress, in-situ elastic modulus, recording of field variables (pillar length and width, height and width of opening, opening width to height ratio, extraction ratio, and overburden height) and collection of salt block samples. The geomechanical properties of rock salt (uniaxial compressive strength, Young’s modulus, Brazilian tensile strength, and density) were also determined to estimate overburden stress, pillar strength, and factor of safety (both estimated and actual). It was found that the measured pillar stresses are proportional to the overburden stress values, with their magnitude ranging from 6.05 MPa to 11.97 Mpa, and the pillars were found to be stable. Regression analysis was performed to develop statistical models for in-situ stress and in-situ elastic modulus. Finally a quick guideline chart was developed to determine the suitable length of pillar for a given span and required level of safety.

"Homogeneous populations are required to perform descriptive, probabilistic, and inference statistics and to support stable, predictable mining operations. The geological and downstream processing environments are, however, highly heterogeneous. The complex nature of mining environments requires means to identify and define multipopulation environments that could affect the performance of mining value chains. A study performed at several operating mines suggests that the impact of heterogeneous or variable geological, mining, and plant processing environments on overall mining value chain performance may not be a key focus area at these operations. This was illustrated through the use of basic and spatial statistics, which included the log-probability plot, a modified range equation, and chronovariography. The findings reflect high relative variability in the geological and processing environments studied and mining operators’ inability to effectively deal with the sources and consequences of variability. The study suggests that a focus on heterogeneity in complex mining operations may significantly enhance overall mining performance. The inherent heterogeneity of complex geological environments is also referred to as spatial heterogeneity. Heterogeneity or variability, however, also occurs over time at mining operations.
