Researchers studying dust generation from blasthole drills developed a simple, quick fix that reduced respirable dust concentrations by more than 63% at the dump point. This device, which requires almost no maintenance, is small and inexpensive, and it will help operators maintain compliance to the dust standard. The thought process was that a reduction of respirable dust at any of the multiple sources on the drill, in this case the dust collector dump point, should reduce the total respirable dust generated by the drill. The U.S. Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) has a coal respirable dust standard of 2 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) for an 8-hour shift. MSHA and mine operators periodically collect personal dust samples to determine compliance with this dust standard. Drill operators have one of the highest exposure levels to respirable dust. This has been proven through many reviews of the MSHA dust sampling database. Prior to 1987, the highwall driller at surface coal mines had the most severe exposure to respirable silica dust, a trend that continues today based on MSHA's respirable dust sampling database. A review of the MSHA database for the years 1985 through 1992 shows that 81% of the respirable silica dust samples taken exceeded the permissible exposure limit for the highwall drill operator at surface coal mines. A more recent review of the MSHA database, for the years 1996 through 2000, shows that only 31% of the respirable silica dust samples taken exceeded the respirable silica dust limit for the highwall driller at surface coal mines. This suggests a substantial improvement in preventing the exposure of silica dust to the highwall drill operator. The drill operator, however, still tops the list of job occupations that have the highest exposure to respirable silica dust Respirable dust has been shown to be harmful to human health, especially when silica is present in the dust. It causes a disease known as silicosis, which can occur in three levels: chronic silicosis, which occurs after 10 years of exposure; accelerated silicosis, which occurs between 5 and 10 years of exposure; and acute silicosis, which can occur within a few weeks to five years of very high exposure to silica dust. Respirable dust consists of the dust particle size fraction whose median diameter is 4 micrometers (µm). The drilling machine generates high concentrations of respirable dust from several sources: drill table shroud leakage, dust leakage through the table bushing, dust discharge from the dust collector exhaust due to impaired filters, and dust entrained from the dust collector fines dumped onto the bench. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Lab (PRL) has been studying different methods to reduce respirable dust from these sources. During its testing, the institute identified a simple solution that reduces the amount of respirable dust generated at the collector dump point.

"This paper is based on the development of the Maza-Austin technique for characterizing thousands of coal particles by approximate analysis of the major inorganic constituents Ca, Al, Si, K, Na, Fe and S in each particle. The technique has sufficient sensitivity to work on small volumes, is fast enough to handle large number of particles within a reasonable period of time, and consists of scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (SEK-EDS). A computerized SEK-EDS system that allows the automated analysis of hundreds of coal particles per hour' is described. The analysis is based on the location and tracing of coal particles embedded in a polished specimen, the selection of sampling points on the traced particles, the collection of an x-ray spectrum from each sampled point for a defined period of time, and the processing of the x-ray intensity to calculate point composition using ZAF corrections. Procedures for correcting for dead time, background, detector efficiency and spectrum overlap are described. These corrections are essential if reasonably accurate analyses are to be obtained from unknown complex mixtures of the elements in a coal or fly ash particle. Examples are given. INTRODUCTION Coal is a complex mixture of organic and inorganic materials. The inorganic fraction is referred to as mineral matter (Gluskoter, 1978) but can occur in three modes: (i) an observable mineral species; (ii) as cations held by ion exchange to carboxylic groups; and (iii) in chelate complexes. The mineral matter content normally represents a significant proportion of a coal, with an average value of about 15% for US coals (Gluskoter, 1975). The standard methods of analysis of the mineral matter in coals are performed on a sample selected to represent the whole coal as closely as possible, and give the overall inorganic composition in the coal. Such analyses are of limited use for solving problems originating from the behavior of individual coal particles, whose compositions vary widely from the average value. This is particularly true in pulverized coal combustion, where the current methods of predicting the slagging and ·fouling potential of a coal are based on the bulk ash composition, but the fly ash particles which create the deposits originate from coal particles with large differences in mineral compo1ition. Some examples can be found where, in a comparison between two coals, the one with the smaller slagging potential according to the mean ash composition was the one that behaved worst in the furnace (Moza et al., 1980; Koza and Austin, 1983). The u1e of gravity fractionation to assess the slagging potential of pulverized coals has shown that conventional ASTM analysis is not sensitive to differences in the distribution of mineral matter when comparing coals (Borio and Narciso, 1979). Bryer (1979) concluded that coals should be examined for fouling and slagging potential by analyzing gravimetric and size-fractionated coal, preferably pulverized· and ground to the size expected at the mill outlet."

This report presents test results, data evaluations, and typical system performance expectations based on wireless electromagnetic propagation measurements performed in the MAGMA Copper Company's San Manuel mine near Tuscon, Arizona during March 30 through April 2 1981. In particular, and at the Bureau's request, this work was coordinated with testing of MF prototype vehicular radios being developed by A.R.F. Products, Inc. with USBM support under Contract H0308004 as part of a system to be marketed by Mine Safety Appliance Co. This testing also employed a prototype vehicular antenna developed by Terry S. Cory, P.E. with USBM upport under previous Contract P0382223. The work was performed under USBM contract J0308012, Propagation of EM Signals in Underground Metal/Non-metal Mines. The authors wish to thank Mr. Hank Seany, Manager of Mines and Mr. Bob Zerga, Mine Superintendent who so kindly arranged for the visit. Mr. Jiminez's effort was instrumental in performing the testing, and he also provided a detailed understanding of the existing multi-level, multi-frequency trolleyphone system at MAGMA. the authors are also indebted to Dr. Larry Stolarczyk of A.R.F. for numerous detailed consultations on MF technology, and who was present and participated in the majority of the testing. 1.1 GENERAL BACKGROUND ON COPPER MINING AT MAGMA the San Manuel mine is the largest copper mine in the U.S., efficiently extracting copper and molybdenum sulfide from the low-grade San Manuel ore body.This ellipsoidal ore-shell body, with major workings located 2000-3000 feet mbelow the surface, has ore shell thickness varying between 100 and 1000 feet over a longitudinal extent of some 8000 feet, and with major & minor crossectional axes of about 5000 and 2500 feet respectively. The San Manuel mine operation employs in excess of 1000 men/shift with gross ore production between 60,000 and 70,000 tons/day. The mining operation employs the block caving technique; actively being implemented on three levels (2075,2375,2675 feet for haulage, and 2015,2315,2615 product/grizzly levels). The ore haulage is largely via D.C. trolley trains to four (3A,3B,3C,3D) product shafts for skipping to the surface. An additional three shafts at two locations are used to convey men, materials, and developmental rock extractions into and out of the mine. On each haulage level, the trains carry ore an average of two miles one-way from the ore raises to the dump points. 1.2 TOPOLOGICAL BRIEF OF THE HAULAGE LEVELS The 2375 level, on which all the testing was conducted, is illustrated in

The lack of visibility near earthmoving equipment resulted in six fatalities in U.S. surface mining operations during 2003. These accidents were the result of either a piece of equipment striking another vehicle or worker, or the equipment traveling over the edge of an embankment. Figure 1 is an example of a recent accident that resulted in serious injuries to one worker and fatal injuries to two others when a van parked in front of a haul truck. Two fatalities occurred in separate incidents when front-end loaders struck workers. Another two workers were killed when their equipment backed over the edge of a highwall or dump point [1]. There is clearly a need to provide better information to equipment operators regarding their surroundings. [ ] Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Spokane Research Laboratory, are working to reduce these accidents by developing systems that sense obstacles and changes in terrain near the equipment and provide this information to the operator. Many off-the-shelf proximity warning systems that were developed for automobiles, light trucks, and recreational vehicles were evaluated on off-highway dump trucks [2]. Many limitations were found with existing systems, including frequent false alarms, limited detection range, a lack of specific information on an obstacle (e.g., location, identity), difficulties in finding suitable mounting locations, and an inability to withstand the environment. These limitations have necessitated the development of new systems designed specifically for large, off-highway, earthmoving equipment. New off-the-shelf systems available for mining equipment include radar and tag-based detection systems. Prototype systems now being developed include a proximity warning system based on the Global Positioning System (GPS) and a computer-assisted stereovision system. Development of these new systems was accomplished by working with manufacturers to modify existing systems to meet the needs of surface mining and through cooperative research with organizations to develop completely new solutions. A typical proximity warning system consists of a sensor or antenna mounted on the equipment that detects the presence of obstacles and an alarm interface in the cab of the equipment. Some systems, as described in more detail below, also require that other vehicles and personnel on the ground be outfitted with electronic tags that transmit an “I’m here” signal back to the system (e.g., radio signal detection systems or GPS). Many types of proximity warning systems are on the market, but they are not all discussed in this paper. APPROACH In past work, engineers at NIOSH evaluated several off-the-shelf proximity warning technologies in order to verify their effectiveness on off-highway dump trucks [2]. Dump trucks were chosen because of the number and severity of accidents involving this type of equipment and because extensive blind areas around these trucks are typical. Work places of an underground coal mine are required (30 CFR 1719) to be illuminated while self-propelled equipment is used. Permissible machine mounted systems have been developed and applied satisfactorily to many mining operations. However, some low seam and thin seam equipment has been difficult to illuminate because reliable, direct current systems and compact, low output, low glare luminaires were not available. This program resulted in the design and prototype construction of compact, low glare luminaires and AC and DC power systems, particularly suited to resolving illumination problems on low and thin seam mining equipment. Design objectives were based on enhancing the prospects for thin seam illumination solutions through definition of a product which could challenge markets enjoyed by higher glare luminaires and through reduction of technical risks associated with any new product development as well as the MSHA certification process.

A procedure, which can be performed in the field by nonanalytical personnel, is given for sensitive spot tests for detecting tellurium or selenium. The expressed need of a field test for detecting small amounts of tellurium, which may be accompanied by relatively large amounts of selenium, has led to the development of this method. Tellurium search has been impeded by the lack of a satisfactory test from the standpoint of sensitivity and specificity. A quantitative laboratory method exists, but it is expensive and relatively laborious. Several other qualitative tests are known, but they require unstable solutions, which must be freshly prepared for use, and a greater variety of laboratory equipment. The particular advantages of the test described are its simplicity and the stability of the reagents required, there-fore is is well adapted for field use. Also, this test was found to be of practical use in the analytical laboratory when screening samples, thereby reducing analytical costs. The roughly quantitative interpretation of the results can save time by indicating the approximate size of the sample taken for a quantitative determination.

Vibration magnitude and frequency of the z-axis vehicle seat are time-variant, which are influenced by not only vehicle vibration characteristics themselves but also road surfaces, speeds and the human body. There is little in the current reporting about evaluating and analyzing automobile seat vibration that focuses on the time-variant. Yaguchi et al.1 has proposed a method to evaluate automobile seat vibration that is based on judgments using a subjective mental state. Their method focuses on the time-variant magnitude of the peak frequency on a power spectrum density. However, their method has no consideration of all the frequency contents of the discomfort, nor comparison between different peak frequency vibrations. Suzuki2 has emphasized that the vehicle vibration should be judged by a series of vibration stimuli to evaluate, because the vehicle vibration is time-variant, which isn’t a matter of the relationship between a single vibration stimulus and a subjective response. He clarified that the human sensation to the vehicle vibration discomfort changes every moment showing the relationship between the frequency-weighted r.m.s. acceleration calculated every 5 seconds and the category judgment to vehicle vibration discomfort every 5 seconds. However, his study doesn’t show what parameter connects to the subjective final judgment to vehicle vibration. Therefore, we applied the method similar to ISO100563 considering the time-variant to the vehicle seat z-axis vibration evaluation. The new method for the vehicle seat vibration considering the time-variant was examined on the hypothesis that the final subjective evaluation must be conducted from the judgment summarizing a series of vibration stimuli. Methods The vibration bench system, which reproduces the movement of a vehicle floor, was used for the experiment with the single-axis (vertical direction) four-post road simulator system, which is usually used for a car, as shown in Fig.1. The experiment was done on the right side of the vibration bench using the floor vibration which was 5.5 minutes, 0.822 m/sec2 (Wk) over the range 0.5-20Hz with 4 male subjects (age ave21.5, SD0.5, weight ave75kg, SD7.91kg, height ave166.8cm, SD5.2cm) and 4 suspension seats. As Fig.2 shows, subjects evaluated the degree of discomfort every 5 seconds to each seat vibration measuring the seat z-axis vibration acceleration. [ ]

For more than 10 years coke-oven technologists have been investigating the expanding properties of coal on a scale larger than that afforded by laboratory test tubes. Koppers 4/ was among the first to realize that coals can not be differentiated satisfactorily with respect to expansion in coke ovens by the simpler test-tube methods; in his first method 80 grains of fine coal were coked in a cylinder heated from the bottom, so that the zone of fusion (plastic layer) advanced from the bottom to the top. The scale of test was too small; it has been modified by other investigators, but without significant improvement in practical application of the results. Somewhat later Koppers and Jendne 5/ experimented with a small-scale coke even, one wall of which was movable, in which the layer-coking in a coke oven could be simulated closely. This oven was heated from both sides. Their results with this oven showed a peak in the time-pressure curves near the end of the coking, period when the two plastic layers, advancing from opposite walls, meet. They also found that although the smaller oven was heated from one side only and did not show the Pressure peak characteristic of two-sided heating, it still gave results entirely too high. Russell built an oven similar to the movable-wall oven of Koppers and Jenkner and compared results obtained in it on Beckley expanding coal with these obtained on the some coal in the Altieri 7/ small-scale apparatus. Both tests were conducted at the same constant pressure, but heating was from two sides in Russell's oven and from one side in the Altieri tester. Russell found that the two types of test gave comparable results under constant pressure conditions even though the heating procedures were quite different. He showed later, however, that a "borderline" coal 8/ that contracted in the Altieri tester at constant pressure developed a peak pressure of 4 pounds per square inch in the movable-wall oven heated from both sides at constant volume. He concluded from this that testing at constant volume gave results more accurately indicative of dangerous expansion tendencies than those at constant pressure. He also found that heating from both sides in this oven gave higher pressure than heating from one side only.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Survey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. Corrosion research is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines to determine suitable construction materials for geothermal resource recovery plants. As part of this research, the corrosion resistance of 31 iron-nickel-, aluminum-, copper-, titanium-, and molybdenum-base alloys was characterized and evaluated in laboratory corrosion studies in low-and high-salinity geobrines representative of those found in the Imperial Valley, Calif. General, crevice, pitting, weld, and stress corrosion were measured at 105° and 232° C in deaerated brines and brines containing dissolved 02, C02, and CH4 General corrosion rates in deaerated brines at 105° and 232° C were usually below 5 mpy for the alloys tested except carbon steel, the low-alloy steels, Monel 400, 70-30 cupronickel, and the aluminum-base alloys. Dissolving carbon dioxide and methane in the brines at 2320 did not markedly alter these results. However, the introduction of oxygen, which can enter the brine during process operations, seriously degraded the corrosion resistance of many alloys by increasing the incidence of stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion and, except for the titanium-base alloys, pitting. In deaerated brine at 2320 C, the general corrosion rates for carbon steel and the low-alloy steels were relatively unaffected by pH in the range of 6.1 to 3.0. However, general corrosion rates increased sharply below pH 3.0. In deaerated brine at 232° C, welds in several iron-, nickel-, and titanium-base alloys corroded at rates comparable to the general corrosion rates of the alloys, but the addition of oxygen to the brine increased corrosion rates for welds in Inconel 625 and E-Brite 26-1. Alloys exhibiting good corrosion resistance in the deaerated Salton Sea KGRA-type brine at 232° C were E-Brite 26-1, Inconel 625, Hastelloy S, Hastelloy G, Hastelloy C-276, TiCode-12, Ti-0.2Pd, Ti-2Ni, Ti-1.7W, and TZM. The alloys most resistant to corrosion in oxygenated Salton Sea KGRA-type brine at 232° C were the titanium-base alloys. These alloys appear the most suitable for use in the construction of geothermal resource recovery plants. Carbon steel and the low-alloy steels are unsatisfactory for high-temperature, high-salinity brines and alternative low-cost materials with improved corrosion resistance should be sought.

Separation of the slightly soluble minerals (Ksp? 10-10), one from the other is one of the more difficult tasks confronting flotation engineers. This study has focused on means of separating such prominent members of this class as scheelite, fluorite and calcite from one another. Some experimental work has also been done on the minerals magnesite, dolomite and apatite. Carboxylic acid-type collectors are commonly used industrially to float all of these minerals. Thus, the problem at hand is to ascertain means of achieving selectivity between minerals known to respond rather similarly in flotation. Four techniques have been proposed for the separation of minerals of this class from each other: 1. Control of potential determining ions 2. Use of stereo-specific collectors 3. Use of flotation rate differences 4. Use of selective activating and depressing compounds. This study was directed toward a cursory evaluation of each of these techniques, and each was found to be a possible method of achieving selectivity. Stereo-specific collectors -- those whose parking area may closely match the available adsorption site on one mineral but not on another -- are a possible means of achieving selectivity between scheelite, fluorite and calcite. Stereo-hindered carboxylic acid salts and sulfonates all show selectivity between the three minerals tested. Separations also appear to be possible by the controlled use of the lattice ions (e.g., Ca and [W0=4] for scheelite, CaW04), H+, [OH-, C0-3 and HCO=3]; all of them ostensibly potential determining in the systems studied. Flotation rate differences of the minerals as a function of pH under conditions of starvation collector usage also showed promise. Scheelite and fluorite float most rapidly with sodium oleate in slightly acidic (pH 4-7) solutions whereas calcite floats most rapidly near pH 10. Use of Mn++, Pb++, or other heavy metal hydroxy complexes as activators was seen to effect each of the slightly soluble minerals differently. This is in sharp contrast to the oxygen containing, relatively insoluble minerals, where all minerals respond in a similar manner to such activation procedures. Results indicate that all four methods outlined above may potentially be used to achieve flotation separation of the slightly soluble minerals. More extensive research should be undertaken to detail the spcific applicability of each of the procedures and to make a more complete evaluation of the effect of collector type and concentration, mineral type, pH and size effects.

"Abstract. This paper attempts to characterize coal breakage due to the action of a continuous miner. Coal blocks with an approximate dimension of 45.7 cm x 38.1 cm x 15.2 cm (18 in. x 15 in. x 6 in.) were first subjected to confining pressures equivalent to in-situ conditions. Then the blocks were cut along the face/butt cleat direction by the cutting head of a specially designed unique automated rotary coal cutting simulator (ARCCS), simulating the action of the continuous miner in underground coal mining. During the tests under a particular set of in-sit and operating parameters a number of other para¬meters such as 1) penetration of bit into coal, 2) penetration resistance (thrust and cutting pressures), 3) rotating velocity of cutting head, and 4) acoustic emission activity in the coal block were monitored. After each cutting cycle the fractured surfaces were photographed and a velocity survey was conducted by using a sonic technique. At the end of each experiment, the coal fragments were collected in bags using a vacuum cleaner. These fragments were then sieved for size distribution analysis.INTRODUCTIONThe Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was enacted to emphasize to coal operators that the airborne respirable dust should not exceed 2 mg/m3, thus reducing the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis.Dust control techniques such as conventional water sprays and dust collectors are only partially effective and require additional equipment expenditures. A more authentic approach would be to reduce respirable dust at the source the continuous mining machine cutting head, where the fragmentation process occurs. Improving the fragmentation process by characterizing the coal breakage will not only reduce respirable dust at the face, but it will also decrease the amount of respirable dust that is liberated during the secondary handling.Fragmentation of coal can be expressed as a function of three major groups of parameters; namely, 1) coal properties, 2) in-situ conditions and 3) operating parameters. This paper deals with the characterization of coal breakage along both face/butt cleat direction as a function of machine operating parameters such as rate of advance, angle of attack, bit configuration, bit lacing (spacing and pattern) and bit speed at various equivalent in-situ pressures."

Comprehensive world mineral industry investment data do not exist, but limited material published on aggregates of in vestment in some elements of the world mineral industry suggest a continued up-turn in the investment level, at least in market economy countries in 1989. Steel industry investments in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries are not yet available for 1989 but, as shown in table 6, increased by 22.1% in 1988, after showing a decrease of 5.2% (revised) in 1987. The pattern of investment ups and downs varied during 1988 within country blocs and economic alliances showing no particular trends. Investment in the steel industry by the United States increased by 58.3% between 1987 and 1988 and was 1 1.9% higher than the previous highest amount invested during the 1984-88 period but was still 41.5% less than the amount invested in 1983. Investment in the steel industries of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) dropped again in 1988 from the revised amount for 1987, which became the first drop after several years of steady growth in what became the expanded ECSC in 1986. This drop in 1988 was the result of lower investments by Denmark, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Nether- lands, and Spain, investments grew or remained level in Belgium, Portugal, and the United Kingdom in 1987 and 1988. A decrease in investment in the Canadian (-26.6%) steel industry was offset by in- creases registered by the members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) of 31.7%, by Japan of 19.8% by Turkey of 22.4%, and a slight increase by the nations of Latin America. If data for the world steel industry as a whole, including those of the centrally planned economy countries, were available, the same pattern presumably would be shown as that reported; that is, it would remain fairly stable, with increases in some countries being offset by decreases in others. "The present and possible future commercial production of potash from various sources in the United Status is discussed below under the following heads:1. Potash from the saline lakes.(a) Nebraska lakes.(b) California lakes.(c) Other lakes.2. Potash as by-product from the cement kilns.3. Potash as by-product from the iron blast furnace.4. Potash from silicate rocks.(a) Feldspathic material.(b) Leucite rocks of Wyoming..(c) Sericite slates of Georgia.(d) Glauconite (greensand) of New Jersey.5. Potash from Alunite.6. Potash from organic sources other than kelp.7. Potash from kelp.In this discussion very little more than passing reference, if any, will be given to those projects which up to date have been developed only slightly, if at all, beyond the small scale laboratory stage, or for the development of which there appears to be very little financial and technical backing at the present time. Nether or not many of these proposed projects have merit can be determined only by an actual operating demonstration.Generally speaking, the potash industry of the United States has been hardly more than marking time since the armistice. This is, largely due to the fact that the consumers of potash have been expecting that heavy shipments of foreign potash to the United States would be resumed soon at somewhere near the pre-war prices, and they have not seen owing domestic potash at present prices for many months. The result has been that domestic producers have been unable to sell their product at even cost and many producers of potash have been obliged to close down. Thu Nebraska lake plants were closed down in February. The California saline plants were operating at below capacity, and the only large alunite plant is closed down. Even the cement plants have little or no inducements to recover the potash being lost in their waste gases and the production is very small at present.This condition will doubtless continue until a definite policy is decided upon as to the future importation of potash salts from Germany and. France. If unrestricted importation is allowed at prices even 50% greater than in 1913, only a very few, if any, of the domestic projects will be in position to compete with the foreign potash immediately, and the present industry will probably greatly decline with little or no prospect for a future resumption of the industry."

From a scientific point of view , the zircon is by far the most remarkable of the gem stones , and a satisfactory solution of the problems offered by its characters and constitution has not yet been made . 3 Three distinct forms have been recognized , differing in specific gravity , hardness , optical properties , behavior when heated , and color.4 ( See section of this paper entitled "Description and Properties . " ) Zircon as a gem stone has not been as well known as its properties warrant . It is one of the most brilliant of the precious stones (having a high refractive index) . The colorless zircon rivals the diamond in brilliance and fire play to such an extent that a judgment based entirely upon optical inspection might be erroneous . In the opinion of gem authorities , the colored stones likewise have much merit . The blue zircon ( " Starlite" ) was so named by Kunz because of its resemblance to a " star twinkling in the night . " Another gem authority describes the leaf- green stone as one possessing a restful beauty , the red stone as having a certain ( though somber) grandeur , and the golden-yellow stone as being unsurpassed in magnificence . The slowness with which the zircon , a stone frequently mentioned in ancient literature , has come into use in modern jewelery may be owing to the fact that authorities differ as to whether the colorless and the blue zircons are found as such in nature or are treated stones . Any treated stone , although the material of which it is composed may be essentially genuine , has been considered a deception . However , according to Kunz , " Starlite is now sold over the entire world ; never has anything been so well introduced. "7 Dr. Foshag, mineral curator of the United States National Museum, states that the first allotment of zircons to enter the United States was obtained in 1921 from Siam ( through France ) for scientific or museum purposes and that four or five years later the stones were adopted by the jewelers of this country . Retail jewelers are displaying the colorless type and the blue stones , especially , in finger rings , necklaces , and like ornaments . Fine crystals have been used somewhat extensively in jewelling watches and as supports for the edges of fine balances . At one time zircons were though to be appropriate in mourning jewelery .

"INTRODUCTION In 1930 the Shenandoah-Dives Mining Co. near Silverton, Colo., put into operation a newly erected, 300-ton selective flotation plant to mill complex ores from its nearby mine. The operation was a steady producer and was enlarged to treat 600 to 800 tons a day. In 1942 the company opened and started milling an area in the mine containing semioxidized ore. The valuable mineral content of this ore was considerably higher than in, the straight sulfide ore previously handled alone. The mixture of clean sulfide and semi-oxidized ore was difficult to treat; consequently, tailing losses, especially with respect to lead, were high. A few years later, in order to study the possibilities of obtaining higher recoveries by a modification of the mill flow sheet, a 1,200-pound sample of mill, feed, taken over a period of several days by the company, was submitted to the Mississippi Valley Experiment Sta¬tion for testing-. Although this sample proved to contain more than twice as much lead as the average yearly mill feed, the same problem of recovering the oxidized values was present.A résumé of the ore-dressing treatment used in the Shenandoah-Dives mill follows. After crushing, the ore passes through a ball mill, the minus 5-mesh discharge of which is distributed to three tables. A finished lead concentrate is made on the tables, and the table tailing goes to the classifier which is in closed circuit with the ball mill. The classifier overflow is treated -by flotation to obtain a bulk sulfide concentrate at a relatively coarse size. The bulk concentrate is thickened and reground to about 95 percent minus 325-mesh before flotation treatment to separate a lead-copper and a zinc concentrate. A typical monthly average showed that the table concentrate contained about 45 percent lead, 1 percent copper, 4 percent zinc, 12 ounces of gold, and 40 ounces of silver; that the lead flotation concentrate contained '35 percent load, 6 percent copper, 7 percent zinc, 3.5 ounces of gold, and 50 ounces of silver; and that the zinc flotation concentrate contained 2 percent lead, 0.5 percent copper, 60 percent zinc, 0.15 ounces of gold, and 4 ounces of silver. Recoveries in salable products were roughly b5 percent of the lead, 70 percent of the copper, 45 percent of the zinc, 85 percent of the gold, and b5 percent of the silver."

"This paper describes the study of bit wear characteristics on three types of rock namely Tennessee sandstone, Berea sandstone and Indiana limestone. High content of quartz with quartz cement in Tennessee sandstone causes removal of material from the bit body and dam2ge to the tip of the bit resulting into excessive weight and height loss as compared to other two types of rock. The drum speed and water spray pressure do not contribute significant effect on bit wear. The polycrystalline compact diamond (PCD) tipped bits are more wear resistant than the ordinary tungsten carbide (WC) tipped bits, but, due to wider body of PCD bits, the wear rate increases particularly at greater depth of cut. INTRODUCTIONThe impact of bit-rock interaction during the cutting process in underground coal mines has always attracted the-interests of mining operators, researchers and the manufacturers. Coal cutting bears directly on airborne coal dust generation which causes ""black lung"" in coal workers. On the other hand, rock cutting generates frictional sparks causing face ignitions. The bit wear not only produces airborne rcspirable coal dust , but also affects the productivity, safety and economy. Hun and Evans (J) concluded that the point attack bits have greater ignition potential than the conventional wedge shaped bits. The results of a study (2) suggested that after 7% of weight loss, the bit should be replaced. In a survey study (3), it was found that the bit consumption of bit had an effect on the productivity and utilization of the continuous miners. The mining industry is yet to receive a solution which could provide them with optimum operating parameters for coal cutting machines in underground C9al mines.The study was, therefore, taken up to determine wear characteristics as influenced by the rock propenies and varying operating parameters. For the purpose of this study, three types of rock, Tennessee sandstone, Berea sandstone and Indiana limestone were used. The machine operating parameters included (i) drum speed, (ii) water spray pressure and (iii) bit type. Besides studying the wear characteristics, the effects of these parameters on the required cutting force, specific energy consumption, acoustic emission generation and bit temperature rise were also studied. Also, the preliminary experiments were performed to compare the bit wear between PCD and WC tipped bits."

"Using propidium assay and flow cytometry, we examined how silica exerts its toxicity toward phagocytic cells employing the human neutrophil as a model. This toxicity appears to be associated with calcium bound to silica. Once the silica with calcium is phagocytized, the extra calcium causes the death of the cell. Using ""Ca we found that 6 to 10% of millimolar calcium is bound to milligram amounts of respirable-sized silica (diameter of 5 µ.m or less) at physiological pH. If the silica particles arc coated with an organosilanc (Prosil 28). calcium binding is decreased by 60% as is cell death. Pretreating with INDO IAM (a chelator of intracellular calcium) reduces the cellular death by 80%. Nonfibrogcnic particles- polystyrene beads or coal dust-produced 10% or less cell death in a 4-h period. Silica with no added, external calcium appears to exert toxicity to neutrophils; however, pretreating cells with EDT A decreases cellular death to the level of nonfibrogcnic particles. Chronic toxicity with silica-calcium appears similar to the chronic toxicity in gout where particles cause a cycle of inflammation. c 1993 Academic Press, Inc.Silicosis is an occupational disease caused by the inhalation of fine particles of silica, usually between 0.1 and 5 µ.m in diameter (1). A recent hypothesis explaining silica's toxicity suggested that surface free radicals caused damage to cells (2). This explanation appears doubtful, however, since the addition of silica to water, such as that found in biological systems, quenches free radicals; also, such a hypothesis does not provide basis for a persistent inflammatory pattern that lasts for years. Kane et al. (3) proposed that silica's toxicity resulted from an excessive concentration of calcium ions within the phagocytic cell (macrophages). However, the mechanism that was capable of linking silica to an excess of intracellular, ionic calcium was not explained. The surface of silica is certainly involved because covering the surface with polymers or phospholipids decreases silica's toxicity (4-6).When silica is engulfed by macrophages platelet activating factor and leukotrienes are produced (7, 8). This is the same inflammatory pattern produced by phagocytic cells exposed to the calcium ionophore A23187 and ionic calcium. How could silica be acting like A23187? Perhaps calcium binds to silica extracellulary and then is released intracellulary following phagocytosis; the latter process, in a sense a ""piggy back"" process, would permit activation of inflammation and cell death mechanisms."

Physiol. 252 (Cell Physiol. 21 ): C677-C683, 1987.-An electrooptical method was developed to quantify superoxide (02) release from single rat pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) during adherence to the bottom of a culture dish. This was done by measuring the reduction of nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate at 550 nm from videorecorded images of individual cells. Temporal changes in cell optical density, which are proportional to the mass of diformazan produced, were calculated from videophotometric measurements of the change in light intensity over individual cells. Total diformazan produced increased 78 and 1263 with an increase in NBT from 0.5 to 1.0 and 2.0 mg/ml, respectively. Total diformazan produced and maximum rate of production among individual PAM varied two- to threefold providing strong evidence for heterogeneity in 02 production. Specific inhibition of 02 production by superoxide dismutase, iodoacetate, and chlorpromazine significantly reduced the total diformazan produced and maximum rate of diformazan production. Hydrogen peroxide was not involved in NBT reduction, since catalase alone did not significantly change diformazan production. This novel method to quantify 02 release from single PAM should be valuable in analyzing heterogeneity and single cell kinetics of O; production, in assessing the effects of exposure of cells to particulates on O; release, and in relating release to electrophysiological measurements.rat; nitro blue tetrazolium; macrophage heterogeneity; single cell kinetic PULMONARY ALVEOLAR MACROPHAGES (PAM) protect the lungs by phagocytizing foreign debris and bacteria (24). This process involves ingestion as well as destruction of foreign matter. Phagocytosis is usually accompanied by a respiratory burst that increases cellular oxygen consumption and glucose metabolism in the hexose monophosphate shunt (7), which leads to the release of highly reactive oxygen metabolites at the surface of the · plasma membrane (6, 27). These agents have been implicated in the killing of bacteria by phagocytes (22), but have also been shown to be toxic and have been linked to cancer, emphysema, arthritis, diabetes, and other diseases (17, 22, 30). Toxic effects may be a result of either an abnormally low production of metabolites, resulting in damage to lung tissue by respirable bacteria and dusts, or an abnormally high production, resulting in direct damage to lung tissue by metabolites themselves."

Five different types of drilling systems were developed under the flexible drill program that was initiated by the Federal Bureau of Mines to protect roof bolter operators. The systems were designed for underground coal mines with seams as low as 30 inches, and with roof bolts longer than the height of the seam opening. Four of the developed systems were true flexible drills; the fifth was a remote-controlled, automatic rod changer concept. Only two of the five firms successfully completed testing requirements under the original contracts: BendixCorp.,4 with a true-flex drill; and Ingersoll-Rand Research, Inc., with the rod changer concept. The Bendix drill was rated best, and the Ingersoll-Rand drill was rated second. Because of the closeness of the ratings and the vast differences in the two development concepts, both systems had sufficient potential to justify further development funding for design updating and testing. Also, both systems warranted consideration for inclusion into other ongoing development projects under both safety and energy directed programs.
