"INTRODUCTION Determination of the thermodynamic properties of metallurgically important compounds of chromium has been one of the activities of the Pacific Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines. Earlier reports have dealt with the entropies 4/ 5/ of chromium, chromic oxide, and chromous and chromic chlorides, with the thermodynamic properties of the chlorides of chromium, 6/ and wits the thermodynamic properties of the carbides and oxide of chromium. 7/ Evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of chromite, FeO.Cr2O3, is desirable, as this material in impure form constitutes the only natural source of chromium of any consequence.Two general methods are available for directly determining heats of formation - (1) measurement of heats of combustion and (2) measurement of heats of solution. Neither of these methods is directly applicable at present to ferrous chromite, which accounts for the lack of previous data. Combustion of a stoichiometrical mixture of iron and chromium under conditions prevailing in a calorimetric bomb yields a mixture of iron and chromium oxides rather than chromite. None of the usual calorimetric solution media dissolve chromite at temperatures low enough for solution calorimetry. Sulfuric acid and an oxidizing agent, such as MnO2 or CrO3, are known to dissolve chromite, but the possible calorimetric use of t is medium would require long preliminary investigation. Consequently, recourse must be taken to some indirect method. At the start of the present work, the most promising method appeared to be the determination of equilibria in the selective, reduction of the iron in chromite by hydrogen;"

Quantities of kaolin in Georgia in-contiguous or single bodies had been established by previous work to be sufficient for an alumina industry. The need for characterization of this kaolin to determine its suitability as an ore of aluminum resulted in the studies described herein. It was determined in an area roughly 7 x 27 miles, known as the Wrens district that approximately 5.9 billion short tons of kaolin averaging 35.55 percent A1203 exist in an essentially continuous clay body. The Macon-Sandersville district consists of discontinuous kaolin bodies averaging 35.28 percent A1203 with an average thickness of 28 feet. Tonnages for this district are not available. One hundred and twenty core samples of kaolin were analyzed for K20, CaO, MgO, Al203, T102, Cr203, Fe203, Si02, P205, and F. The P205 and F were analyzed by wet chemistry methods and the others by electron microprobe. Seventy-nine of the samples were from the Wrens district forty from the Sandersville-Macon district and one from the Andersonville district. Emission spectroscopic analyses were also made to qualitatively determine all elements present for each core. X-ray diffraction studies were made of each core to determine mineral species present. Scanning and transmission electron microscope pictures also are given for each I' core sample. Elevations, overburden thickness, and kaolin thickness are given for each core site as well as map locations. Isopachs for over-burden and kaolin thickness are given for the Wrens district.

An important goal in the development of coal mining explosives has been to improve their safety characteristics through suitable formulation. In the United States no systematic effort to establish factors influencing the incendivity to firedamp and to coal dust of explosives through research was made until the last decade. In consequence, American permissible explosives underwent only very slight modifications and many remained substantially the same as in the early years. As part of a long range program for increasing the safety of permissible explosives, the Bureau of Mines undertook to determine how the amounts and particle sizes of the principal constituents of these explosives affect their incendivity. It was found that an increase in the relative amount of sodium chloride and a decrease in its particle size significantly decreased the incendivity of our permissible explosives to firedamp (7-9).6 This is in agreement with findings reported by Dolan (4) for compositions of nitroglycerin and salt. One important result of the work at the Bruceton station has been the recent introduction of salt-formulated permissibles by several explosives manufacturers. This paper describes a statistically designed experiment for studying the effects of the particle size of ammonium nitrate and the type of carbonaceous materials used on the incendivity of permissible explosives. Interest in these particular effects goes back as far as the first formulations of coal mine explosives, around 1910 in the United States and even earlier in Great Britain and other countries. THE MAGNITUDE of the drainage problem of the anthracite industry in Pennsylvania's Western Middle field is realized when it is known that in 1951 nine pumping plants in this field pumped nearly 36 billion gallons of water to the surface. This is almost 68,000 gallons per minute pumped against an average hydrostatic head of 350 feet for that year alone. In 1948 over 20,000 gallons per minute was pumped by relay pumps against an average hydrostatic head of 265 feet. In addition to the water pumped to the surface, it is estimated that 15,000 gallons per minute overflows to the surface from underground pools in idle mines. The volume (second-feet) of water pumped and overflow water is almost 1;z times the, average mean flow of the Schuylkill River at Pottsville for the 8-year period 1944--51 (7, 13).4 Mahanov and Shamokin Creeks drain an area of 99 square miles in the Western Middle field, and all surface drainage in this area must traverse some part, of the coal measures before entering these streams. On the basis of 46.03 inches of rainfall (the weighted average of 6 recording stations for 1948), the runoff from the drainage area during that period was 51 billion gallons, approximately 1 times the volume of water pumped by all mine-pumping plants in the Western Middle field. In other words, because of the pervious strata overlying the mine workings, approximately two-thirds of the total runoff in the drainage, area becomes mine water tributary to the pumping plants.

THE INVESTIGATION of barrier pillars in the Western Middle field is part of the comprehensive study of the mine-water problem in the anthra¬cite region of Pennsylvania by the Federal Bureau of Mines (1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8,9,10,11,1,2,15,16).8 The Western Middle field is in Schuylkill, Columbia, and Northumberland Counties in eastern Pennsylvania. It has an area of 120 square miles, is 42 miles long from Delano on the east to Trevorton on the west, and is 2 to 5 miles wide. In the Western Middle field are 58 underground water pools containing 38 billion gallons of water (5). Some of the pools overflow to the surface, and the water from others seeps into adjacent mines through permeable barrier pillars separating them from abandoned mines. Several active mines are interconnected to workings in abandoned mines, which are partly filled with water. These mines are separated by barrier pillars that are considered effective only below the altitude of the connections. In some abandoned mines, pumping stations maintain the water at altitudes where the hydrostatic pressure against the barrier pillars is not excessive and does not endanger adjacent active mines. If water in these abandoned mines is allowed to rise to where it can overflow into the active mines, it must be pumped from the active mines at lower altitudes; this materially increases the cost of pumping. It is estimated that from 1944 to 1948 approximately 30 percent of the water pumped to the surface was from abandoned mines.

The total number of petroleum refineries in the United States decreased during 1951, while the total crude-oil charging capacity continued to increase. There were 350 refineries as of January 1, 1952, compared with 357 a year earlier, according to the annual Bureau of Mines capacity survey. A gain of 369,241 barrels in daily refinery crude through-put capacity during 1951 brings the total to 7,332,885 barrels daily. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude-oil was 20,951 barrels daily, an increase of 1,445 barrels daily over the previous year. Capacity added in the Texas Gulf district accounted for 36 percent of the total increase; the Indiana-Illinois-Kentucky district, 23 percent; the East Coast district, 19 percent; the Oklahoma-Kansas district, 12 percent; and the Texas Inland district, 11 percent. The California district was the only one reporting a decline in crude-oil refining capacity, the total being 14,200 barrels daily below the previous year. Reported as under construction January 1, 1952, was an additional crude-oil capacity of 282,680 barrels daily, an increase of 77 percent over the January 1, 1951, total of 160,100 barrels. The capacity now building is for the expansion of existing facilities, since no new plants had been begun as of the first of the year. Three or four companies have plans to build refineries in the Williston Basin area of North Dakota, but no definite locations or dates when construction will begin have been announced.

Tests with a high-pressure water jet were conducted in the steeply pitching Roslyn No. 5 bituminous coalbed in the Roslyn No. 9 mine, Roslyn, Wash., to determine the feasibility of extracting coal from pillars and from a solid coal face in development without drilling and blasting. During pillar mining, using a hand-held monitor, the best results were obtained with a 0.150-inch- diameter nozzle, a water pressure of 3,500 psi, and a flow rate of 38.5 gpm.3 The rate of mining and productivity were 0.74 ton per minute and 16.6 tons per man-shift, respectively. During development mining, using a monitor mounted on a roof jack, the best results were obtained with a 0.148-inch-diameter nozzle, a water pressure of 4,500 psi, and a flow rate of 40.0 gpm. In one section of the mine where the coal was relatively hard, the rate .of mining and productivity were 0.10 ton per minute and 5.7 tons per man-shift, respectively in another section of the mine where the coal was relatively soft, the rate of mining and productivity were 0.51 ton per minute and 8.3 tons per man-shift, respectively. The tests showed that hydraulic mining methods were more productive than conventional mining methods in pillar mining. In development the productivity of hydraulic mining depended primarily upon the coal hardness. Compared with conventional methods, hydraulic mining methods were less productive where the coal was relatively hard and equally as productive where the coal was relatively soft.

Approximately half of all the fuel energy used in the United states is now pro-vided by oil and natural gas. A persistent and rapid growth in energy demand during the last 3 decades has been absorbed largely by the liquid and gaseous rather than solid fuels. In 1948 the energy provided by coal was substantially the same as in 1920. Meanwhile, the use of oil and natural gas each had increased fivefold. On a per capita basis, the change is more significant. Coal consumption has dropped from about 6 tons per person to 4-1/2 tons, while oil has increased from 4-1/3 barrels to 14-1/3, and natural gas from 7,500 cubic feet to about 35,000. These facts would have only academic interest if the United States had unlimited supplies of all fuels. However, while the Nation's reserves of coal are adequate to meet our needs for centuries, those of oil and natural gas appear limited. It is obvious, therefore, that the security of our liquid-fuel position would be greatly enhanced if the supply could be based in an increasing degree on solid fuels, such as coal and oil shale, which make up more than 95 percent of our fuel reserves, instead of natural oil and gas. In addition, this would create new employment and help to stabilize the market for coal, which may be facing comparatively bleak prospects in the near future unless its position with respect to other fuels is improved.

The problem of obtaining enough manganese for use in the manufacture of steel appears likely to recur when international relationships are disturbed and to become serious at any time when the United States is cut off from its customary supply. Some idea of the problems that an e under war conditions may be obtained from a description given by Ellicott3/ in 1918 before the American Iron and Steel Institute. This condition arises because in normal times there is an economic advantage in importing available high-grade foreign ores to the neglect of our own less satisfactory resources. That considerable low-grade manganese ore and a much smaller amount of high-grade material are available in this country is well known from geological surveys 4/ and has been confirmed by Bureau of Mines investigations. Locations of the various deposits are indicated in figure 1. The possibility of greatly expanding domestic production was actually demonstrated from 1913 to 1918, when the annual production of manganese from domestic ores rose from about 4 percent to approximately 35 percent 6/7/ of the total consumption of ferromanganese and spiegeleisen. In idea of how domestic production compares with total consumption in the United States can be obtained 1 from figure 2, taken from the Minerals Yearbook8/ for 1970. Assuming that it is possible to increase production of manganese ores sufficiently to supply all our needs, such a program presumably would require 2 or 3 years, and the cost of production would certainly rice considerably, for some time at least. "INTRODUCTION Electrolytic manganese is produced by electrolysis of a solution of manganese sulfate and ammonium sulfate in a diaphragm-type cell, metallic manganoese being deposited on the cathodes and sulfuric acid produced at the anodes. The spent electrolyte is used to leach fresh ore that has previously been subjected to a reducing roast; the resulting leach liquor is purified and returned to the cell.The leach liquor produced at the Bureau of Mines pilot plant 3/ at Boulder City, Nev., contains 135 to 140 grams of ammonium sulfate and 32 to 36 grams of manganese (as sulfate) per liter, and has a pH of about 2.5. After neutralization to a pH of 6.4 to 6.6 with ammonia and thickening, 0.10 to 0.15 gram of hydrogen sulfide per liter is added to the liquor to precipitate the heavy metals, and after 15 to 30 minutes the precipitate is filtered off. Residual sulfides and colloidal material are removed by ferric hydroxide formed by adding a small amount of ferrous sulfate to the solution at a pH of 6.5 to 7.0 and passing air through it. The solution is then filtered and clarified as a precoat filter. Finally, 0.1 gram of sulfur dioxide per liter is added, and the solution is electrolyzed in an anode-in-diaphragm cell. The spent electrolyte coming from the cell contains approximately 10 grams manganese, 135 grams ammonium sulfate, and 45 grams sulfuric acid per liter."

"INTRODUCTION For a number of years the bureau of Mines has been engaged in the detection, recording and interpretation of earth- and air-transmitted disturbances, man-made and natural, related to mining operations. For the measure¬ment of such disturbances, special equipment was developed (1, 2, 3, 4, 8) 3/ and results of the measurements have been reported (5, 6; 7,9).In general, the ranges of amplitude end frequency of vibration encountered and recorded in the earth-transmitted disturbances were 0.00005 to 0.1 inch and 5 to 5,000 cycles per second; in the air-transmitted disturbances, pressures ranging from 0.001 to 100 pounds per square inch and 0 to 20,000 cycles per second were recorded.One characteristic of the earlier tests was that either the arrival time of the disturbance to be recorded was predictable or the recording speed was slow enough so that the record covered extended periods of time (for example, 4 hours). As the investigations continued, it became apparent that a recording device was required that would respond to transient vibrations arriving at indeterminate times and at the same time provide a permanent record of displacement or acceleration versus time on a scale that would permit the analysis of waves having frequency components up to 10,000 cycles per second. A film or paper speed of 720 inches per second was found to be adequate, as this provides approximately 3/4 inch of record for each 0.001 second."

Several thin film absorber stacks with spectrally selective characteristics were developed by the Bureau of Mines. The stacks consisted of a silicon thick film or a zirconium compound thin film on a reflective thin film of silver. The zirconium absorber films, with the general formula ZrCxOyNz, were prepared by reactively sputtering zirconium or zirconium carbide in argon with small amounts of oxygen, nitrogen, or both, or by oxidizing zirconium films in air. A few similar types of films were prepared from titanium. The short-wave absorptance over the solar spectrum, a(s), and thermal emittance at 600 K, e(600 K), of the solar absorber stacks were calculated from room-temperature reflectance data. The values of a(s) ranged from 0.47 to 0.93, e(600 K) from 0.49 to 0.034, and the ratio a(s)/e(600 K) from 1.7 to 34. The specimen with the best combination of properties, a ZrNx-Ag stack, had a solar absorptance a(s) of 0.85 and a ratio, a(s)/e(600 K), of 24. The effect of film thickness and composition on spectral selectivity was determined. An emissometer for measuring normal total emittance up to 800 K and a method for determining a (s), e(T) (hemispherical), and a(s)/e(T) using simulated solar radiation are described. A calorimetric method for measuring a(s) and e(T) (hemispherical) at elevated temperature is also described. Measurements made on several specimens agreed favorably with calculated values.

[Frequent accidents in the transportation and. handling off petroleum and its more volatile products, serve as a reminder that this is indeed a hazardous undertaking and should always be conducted with due caution. On October 4, 1920, vapors in the held of the British tanks steamer G. R, Crowe became ignited and, caused an explosion which, it is reported, killed 5 men, injured. 40 others and endangered the lives of some 300 more. On November 10, 1920 the Morgan, Line freighter El Mundo was almost totally sot destroyed in New York harbor by fire caused by an explosion of gases in a fuel-oil tank. These two disastrous explosions emu emphasize the ever- present danger attending the use of petroleum products. This is also shown by the frequent occurrence of minor fires and explosions, caused by careless handling of baseline, which result in loss of life or serious injury to railroad employees, to oil-tank drivers, and to individuals in various walls of life. Statistics indicate that the lighter cuts of petroleum products, because of fire hazards, are dangerous, and are so considered by the railroad and other transportation companies. According o the Bureau of Explosives (Bar-eau of Explosives Report No. 13 p. 7) during 1919 transportation of gasoline in the United States resulted in 172 accidents, causing 2 deaths and 31 injuries, and a property loss to the extent of $687,966. Among the causes of ignition, an open light in the vicinity of the container stands out most prominently.]

Low temperature and high-temperature calorimetric measurements were made by the Federal Bureau of Mines on high-purity samples of Re02(s) and Re03(s) to determine heat capacities and enthalpies. The temperature range of heat capacity measurements was 5 to 310 K for Re02 and 8 to 309 K for Re03. High-temperature enthalpy measurements alone were determined for pure Re207(s,1). The derived standard entropies are S°298 = 11.43±0.01 cal/deg mole for Re02(s) and S298 = 16.55±0.02 cal/deg mole for Re03(s). High-temperature enthalpy equations expressed in calories per mole are as follows: Re02 (s) , H-H298.15 = 16.002T + 1.600 X 10-3T2 + 3.522 X 105T-1 - 6,095 (298 to 1,400 K); Re03 (s) , H-H298.15 = 20.293T + 3.238 X 10-3T2 + 3.950 X 105 T-1 - 7,664 (298 to 1,000 K); Re207 (s) , H-H298.15 = 38.437T + 10.309 X 10-3T2 + 4.315 X 105 T-1 - 13,824 (298 to 413 K); Re207 (s) , H-H298.15 = 30.181 + 17.713 X 10-3T2 - 10,612 (413 to 600 K) ; Re207 (1) , H-H298.19 = 66.101T - 10,092 (600 to 700 K). Gibbs energy of formation (?Gf°) data and related functions over the temperature ranges investigated are tabulated for the three oxides.

Experiments were made in a semicontinuous unit to provide engineering data for designing experimental continuous systems . These systems would be used to study the hydrogasification of hvab coal and char (from lowtemperature carbonization ) to high - Btu gas . In experiments at 800 ° C and with a coal residence time of several seconds , yields of hydrocarbon gases increased from about 2,000 scf / ton of maf coal at 250 psig to 7,000 scf at 1,000 psig . With 15 minutes residence time , yields increased from 8,000 scf/ton of maf coal at 250 psig to 17,500 cubic feet at 1,000 psig . In all cases , small quantities of heavy oils were produced along with the gaseous hydrocarbons . Production of oils could be minimized with a corresponding increase in gaseous hydrocarbons by increasing the retention time of the volatiles within the hot zone . Yields of gaseous hydrocarbons from char were slightly greater than from coal under similar conditions . Although the hydrogasification reaction is very pressure dependent , substantial quantities of coal (40 to 60 percent ) could be reacted to gaseous hydrocarbons at pressures as low as 50 psig provided reaction temperatures were increased to 1,200 ° C. It was also demonstrated that a hvab coal could be hydrogasified continuously without incurring agglomeration . This was achieved by dispersing coal in a relatively large reactor with concurrent flow of hydrogen . At 1,000 psig and 800 ° C , it was possible to react about 35 percent of the coal and to produce a gas containing up to 52 percent methane .

"INTRODUCTION The Phelps-Dodge Corp. New Cornelia Branch open-pit copper mine operated without a fatality in the drilling and blasting department from December 13, 1937, to April 1, 1947, and continuing.Between the dates named the explosives crews had a total of 746,520 man-hours of exposure and handled 12,000 tons of explosives, over 770,000 detonators, 2,300,000 feet of fuse, and 7,700,000 feet of Primacord in loading holes to break 116,780,000 tons of material.It is the purpose of this paper to record the procautions taken to insure safe handling of explosives at this operation where safety is definitely a matter of forethought rather than chance.GENERAL INFORMATIONThe New Cornelia Branch open-pit mine operates on a large, low-grade, disseminated-copper deposit about one-half mile south of Ajo, Ariz. The pit is approximately oval; the ore body being some 4,800 feet long and 2,750 feet wide. Ore is mined with electric shovels loading into railroad cars. All benches in- the pit are 40 feet in height except two, which are 60 feet high.The New Cornelia ore body differs from most porphyry-copper deposits in being hard and siliceous. In common with the other low-grade porphyry-copper deposits, continued operation is possible only with economical handling of large tonnages. This has necessitated a great deal of study in the evolution of a safe and efficient method of handling the large quantities of explosives needed in breaking this hard-rock material."

This circular presents data on individual plants of the fuel-briquet and packaged-fuel industries that responded to the Bureau of Mines annual economic survey and reported production for 1959. The companies named herein represent virtually all producers of processed fuels of mineral origin. A few small companies may not have been canvassed or failed to respond, however, as some plants operate intermittently, and the survey is voluntary. No consideration was given to size of the plant and all plants that reported commercial production were included. Specifically excluded were plants that manufactured briquets from wood charcoal. Fuel briquets and packaged fuel are manufactured solid fuels, fabricated from fine-sized mineral fuels by mixing with binders and compressing into small individual shapes. Briquets usually are produced as small, pillow-shaped pieces, 2 to 4 inches long, weighing 2 to 4 ounces. Packaged fuel consists of 3- to 4-inch cubes, 6 or 8 of which are wrapped in heavy kraft paper to form a package weighing 10 to 15 pounds. The overall size of a popular package is 10-112 x 7 x 3-1/2 inches. Briquets are durable, may be stored outdoors, and shipped and used as bulk fuel. Packaged fuel is fragile, and must be stored indoors to keep it from deteriorating. Whereas briquets are consumed in many areas as a general residential fuel, packaged fuel is more of a specialty item, used at times as a supplement to other fuels. Package fuel is burned without removing the paper and referred to as the "white-glove" fuel.

APPENDIX D DEVELOPMENT AND EXPERIMENTAL VERIFICATION OF ACOUSTIC SEAL CHECKER THEORY 1. Introduction In Section 7 of the report the acoustic seal checker concept was described in a general manner and the parameters which affect the signal level at the microphone were discussed briefly. In this appendix the theoretical basis will be presented and the experimental program described which permitted the extension of the theory into practice. The basic goal of the acoustic seal checker is to relate the reduction in sound pressure level to the size of the residual hole in the fly ash barrier. The smallest hole size that may be measured is determined by the signal to noise ratio, where the noise in this case includes the ambient noise in the mine, the internal microphone noise and the sound transmitted from the acoustic source via the flanking paths through corridors adjacent to the one being sealed. The latter source of noise can be discriminated against, at the expense of increased complexity of the acoustic system, by employing a pulsed source and pulse gating of the microphone signal set to accept sound via the barrier path and to reject the delayed flanking path signals. In order that the acoustic system be insensitive to precise source and microphone location and to permit assessment of system performance on an acoustic power flow basis, a broad frequency band of pseudo-random noise is emitted by the loudspeaker source. Included in the program of the Rare and Precious Metals Station, Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines at Reno, Nev., are investigations of treatment methods for ores representative of various mining districts throughout the country. The samples received for this work may come from areas only recently explored or from newly discovered ore deposits in older mining districts. The present investigation deals with a case of the latter type, the. ample having come from a section that has a past record of considerable precious. metals production. The application of current treatment methods to this type of ore seems to offer excellent possibilities of satisfactory economic results. Definite identification of the silver mineral in this ore asthe chloride cerargyrite, AgCl, adds considerable interest to, the investigation, as in many cases where silver occurs in comparatively small amounts in an ore it is not possible to identify the particular mineral carrying the silver or else it is contained in or combined with other more common minerals. Cerargyrite is the "horn silver" of the bananza period and is mentioned in many accounts of pioneer mining of high-grade ores The occurrence of this mineral in finely disseminated form it a low-grade ore is believed to be unusual. The sample investigated was obtained from the' Bullfrog District neat Beatty, southwest Nye County, Nevada. The ore contained 16.7 ounces of silver per ton of ore, 0.007 ounce gold, and 0.32 percent copper in a silicious gangue, with accessory minerals, including iron oxides and scorodite; the hydrous iron arsenate.
