The Bureau of Mines investigated coal deposits at Mount Gran (latitude 76°59' S, longitude 161°07' E), Victoria Land, Antarctica, during the austral summer of 1959-60 as part of the continuing U.S. Antarctic Research Program, which is under the auspices of the National Science Foundation. The coals and associated rocks were measured, sampled, and analyzed. Five coalbeds, ranging in thickness from over 10 feet to scattered fragments of coaly material in sandstone, occur in a sandstone-coal series overlying a series of crossbedded red-buff sandstones. Both series are part of the Beacon group of sediments, and both show some evidence of pressure metamorphism. The sandstones are poorly cemented and are composed dominantly of rounded and often frosted quartz grains. The sediments have been broken and uplifted by a series of massive diabase sills. The broken nature of the sediments precluded an estimate of the amount of coal present. The Mount Gran coals are highly attrital banded anthracites and semianthracites that have most commonly a moderately dull luster but do include bright bands. Coal in contact with or near diabase intrusives is partly graphitic but shows no evidence of coking. Apparently the coal was beyond coking rank before emplacement of the adjacent intrusives. Fragments of the plant Glossopteris indica found with the coal suggest Permian age but do not prove it. The coals appear to be derived from plant remains that collected in shallow basins; individual coalbeds would tend to be lenticular bodies that formed in different places as the dominantly sandy sediments were deposited. The wide distribution of coal indicates that coal-forming conditions prevailed over much of the continent; the great thickness of Beacon sediments indicates that similar conditions may have persisted through a long period of geologic time. Generally similar coal deposits may occupy widely separated stratigraphic positions.

"The tests described in this paper were conducted under the sponsorship of Subcommittee VII on Pulverizing Characteristics of Coal, a subcommittee of Committee D-5 on Coal and Coke, American Society for Testing Materials, with a view to evaluating various laboratory procedures for testing grindability of coal in connection with commercial pulverization of coal for use as powdered fuel. The subcommittee, at a meeting in New York City on February 21, 1934, selected for test four methods that had been developed during the past few years for testing grindabilitay of coal and were being used by coal-testing laboratories in the United States and Canada. These methods are:Bureau of Mines method, Cross method, Fuel Research Laboratory method, and Hardgrove method. Subcommittee VII agreed that the grindability tests should be made on five coals selected to cover a wide range of hardness. The Pittsburgh Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, was asked to direct the investigation and to prepare representative samples of the coals. Laboratories of the fol. lowing institutions and companies agreed to cooperate by making grindability tests: Babcock & Wilcox Co., Foster Wheeler Corporation, Fuel Engineering Co., of New York, Fuel Research Laboratory of the Canada Department of Mines, and Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSHelpful suggestions in planning the investigation were made by A. "INTRODUCTION The Southern Experiment Station of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, cooperating with the University of Alabama and Alabama coal producers, has made a series of investigations of the washability of coal from commercially important bens of Alabama. The results of 13 investigations pertaining to the Mary Lee, Clark, Black Creek, Jefferson, Pratt, Corona, Carter Brookwood, Blue Creek, Thompson, and Woodstock beds have been published. 4/ This report, the fourteenth of the series, deals with run-of-mine coal from the Henry Ellen bed at the Acmar No. 5 mine of the Alabama Fuel & Iron Co.The Acmar mine is 1/2 mile west of Acmar, Saint Clair County, in the northern part of the Cahaba field. Present production at the mine is about 800 tons per day, all of which, accept the lump coal, is treated in jigs. The washability data were obtained by means of screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests. There are included, also, tests showing the extent of liberation of impurities by recrushing the coarser sizes of coal from the top bench and tests showing the flakiness in selected sizes.SAMPLING AT THE MINEThe Henry Ellen bed at Acmar consists of two benches separated by a shale parting. At the point of sampling the top bench was 6 feet 3 inches thick and contained a 1-inch and a 1 1/2-inch band of bone. The bottom bench was 5 feet thick and was separated from the top bench by 20 inches of shale. In taking the samples for the washability study the working face was squared up, and a representative 2-ton section was out from each bench. The shale parting was discarded, according to usual mining practice."

In distributing natural and mixed gas, the industry is each year confronted with the problem of manufacturing gas in increasing amounts as the supply of natural gas becomes more nearly exhausted. The manufactured gas is now used in mixtures with the still available natural product, and will subsequently be used straight as a substitute gas. The gases that might be considered, and are producible by tried and developed processes, include water gas, carbureted water gas, and coal gas. Singularly, these gases can be used in this manner in ordinary appliances only when proportional amounts of them in the mixtures do not vary beyond rather definite limits, unless burner adjustments are made. The limits are defined by the specific gravity, content of inerts, and burning properties of the respective gases. Anticipating a future standard for city gas lower than that of natural gas during the period when considerable natural gas is available, there is justification for considering the possibility of re-forming natural gas and making a product that has substantially the same properties as other gases which can readily be generated. This report gives the results obtained during a series of tests made under a cooperative agreement by the U. S. Bureau of Mines with the Ohio Fuel Gas Co., re-forming natural gas at Toledo, Ohio, in full-scale operation in a water-gas generator having a grate area of 25.1 square feet. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The Ohio Fuel Gas Co. constructed a special water-gas generator for the tests and provided men and the necessary funds for its operation. Appreciation is expressed for the general spirit of helpful cooperation which was evidenced in the activities of all those who took part in the work. This report presents the results of a research and development program in recovering waste-rolling oils conducted by the Bethlehem Steel Co., before 1954 at its Sparrows Point plant, Sparrow Point, Md., with the cooperation of the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, College Park, Md. The objective of the program was twofold: First, to recover oil for reuse in the plant; and second, to stop pollution, by oil, of the stream and harbor areas in the immediate vicinity of the plant. The sequence of the investigations was laboratory and pilot plant studies on sedimentation, simple aeration, and flotation for the separation of oil and water; and construction of a production unit using standard flotation equipment. This work was only preliminary for the Bethlehem Steel Co. and it has continued research on this problem. Recent progress indicates that new, improved processes will soon replace the flotation units described in this report. The first efforts to separate oil and water by simple sedimentation were unsuccessful. To establish the cause of this failure, microscope examinations and measurements were made on cold-reduction rolling mill cooling-water effluents containing oil in suspension. It was discovered that an average oil globule, held in suspension, was only 0.001 inch in diameter and would not coagulate with other globules for normal sedimentation at room temperature. The next step in the sequence of studies was to coagulate the oil suspension by simple aeration with air under slight pressure. The aeration methods studied were effective in removing up to 68 percent of the total oil but were approaching flotation in principle. The final investigation of the series was flotation of the oil in conventional laboratory-size flotation cells. The small-bubble method, without reagents, floated up to 89 percent of the total oil held in suspension and was the process selected for pilot-plant development.

In broadest overview, UN global industrial production indicators released and shown in table 2 suggest that the extractive sector of the world's mineral industry in aggregate registered a very slight upturn in 1991 relative to its 1990 performance. It also shows a continued rebound in the industry from the recessionary period of the mid-to late-1980's. These same indicators as calculated in late 1991, however, reflected a very minor downturn in extractive mineral industry operations between 1989 and 1990. This latter downturn represented a notable revision from the data reported in the immediate previous edition of this chapter, which suggested a tiny upturn. The apparent slight 1991 upturn in extractive sector industrial output generally was not mirrored in the performance of the processing sectors of the global mineral industry. Although the aggregate index for the chemicals, petroleum, coal, and rubber products manufacturers (see table 3) showed a notable gain in 1991, similar indices for nonmetallic mineral products and for base metals registered declines between 1990 and 1991. Examination of regional performance indices shows that the difficulties experienced in 1990 in maintaining output levels within the countries that formerly constituted the CMEA were reinforced by trends toward reduced gains in output levels, if not actual reductions in output, in several other areas. Generally speaking, the traditional developed market economy countries recorded downswings in overall industrial activity in 1991, particularly after midyear, whereas developing market economy countries logged gains. The developed market economy country downturns, however, were not nearly as significant as were the downturns recorded for the former centrally planned economy states - those that before 1992 were either constituent Republics within the U.S.S.R. or the latter's CMEA partners.

Coalbeds were discovered in outcroppings of the Beacon group of sediments on the north end of the Willett Range ( altitude 77 ° 11 ' S , longitude 160 ° 20 ' E ) , Victoria Land , Antarctica , in December 1960 during an investigation undertaken as part of the U.S. Antarctic Research Program under the auspices of the National Science Foundation . Three separate exposures of coal or coaly material were found . Two of the exposures contain , respectively , eight and four beds of hard , compact , finely banded attrital coal ranging in thickness from 8 feet downward to a few inches , and reported to range in rank from mediumvolatile bituminous to semianthracite . The coals are associated with carbonaceous shales containing an abundant assemblage of fossil plants resembling those associated with the Permian coals of Australia and other Gondwana areas . The third exposure , apparently somewhat higher in the stratigraphic sequence , contains only coaly plant fragments scattered through a thin conglomerate and overlying sandstones . A sandstone bed that overlies these coal - bearing sandstones contains abundant logs and fragments of silicified wood . Preservation of features is poor , but one segment of a silicified stem suggests comparison with Rhexoxylon , a gymnospermous tree that usually is considered indicative of Triassic age . The Beacon sediments in this area have been invaded , broken , and uplifted by a massive series of diabase sills and dikes greater in volume than the intruded sediments . The heat emitted by these intrusives must have advanced the metamorphic development of the coals . However , there is no evidence of alteration to graphite , and coal found in direct contact with a diabase sill contains no vesicles or other usual evidences of natural coking . Either the pressure of overlying rocks inhibited the development of coke , or the coals had been metamorphosed beyond the coke forming stage before the igneous intrusion .

"The New Mexico potash exploration described herein was begun in February- 1944 by the Federal Bureau of Mines with the object of determining the amount of potash ore in the United States Potash Reserve in Eddy County, N. Mex., by exploring the deposit from the surface with vertical drill holes. The work was completed in October of the same year after 16 holes had been drilled on the reserve and in the immediate vicinity.The Potash Reserve is located in secs. 26, 27, 34, and 35, T. 20 S., R. 29 E., Eddy County, N. Mex., about 14 miles northeast of the city of Carlsbad. Drilling was done in secs. 26 and 35 of the reserve, in sec. 14 to the north, and secs. 25 and 36 to the east. All work was done on Government-owned, unleased land.The reserve may be reached from Carlsbad by traveling northeast by automobile for about 14 miles on paved U. S. Highway 62. This highway passes through the southern part of the reserve. Other parts may be reached by a State highway which passes along the eastern side of the area, then by poor dirt roads to various drilling sites. A branch of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad also passes across the southern part of the reserve en route from Carlsbad to the plant and mine of the Potash Co. of America, a few miles northeast of the Project and 22 miles from Carlsbad.Work on the project was greatly facilitated by the help of Ralph H. King, associate geologist, R. K. Bailey, geochemist, H. C. Spicer, geophysicist, Hope Bunker, junior geologist, and R. H Allport, district mining supervisor, all of the Federal Geological Survey; and Charles H. Johnson, who at that time was district engineer for New Mexico for the Mining Branch of the Bureau of Mines."

The objective of this study is "to assess the impact of surface mining on soil compaction in the Midwest". The study revolves around a unique field sampling program targeted at four mine sites utilizing four distinct types of soil movement of midwestern prime land. Through the preparation of a final report for use as a guidebook, an assessment is made of the degree to which surface mining operations contribute to the soil compaction problem. The final report is formulated through the use of field study data as well as information gathered in an intense literature review. The final report centers on applying collected data to practical field applications. Soil sampling on the four mine sites centers on a comparison of natural and replaced soils for moist bulk density. This characterization evaluates changes in density and texture throughout the soil profile to a depth of 48 inches. Fertility of the topsoil is also assessed for natural and replaced soils. During field sampling and observations, a base of information has been gathered to compile a case study on each mine site. The report accesses the regulations in the prime farmland areas through the use of a matrix. The regulatory matrix allows easy access of mining personnel to State and Federal regulations.

Intensive work on the deoxidation of steel with manganese-silicon alloys by the U. S. Bureau of Mines has shown that the use of those alloys, which may be produced from our domestic manganese ores, would decrease the ferromanganese requirements of a very large tonnage of our steel by from 60 to 80 per cent and in some cases by 100 per cent. The open-hearth heats made with these alloys have been of excellent quality. The tonnage of our ferro-grade ores Which has been made available by the bureau's ore-dressing studies, combined with the products resulting from such processes as those developed by the bureau and by Bradley for Cuyuna ores, should easily fill our reduced ferromanganese requirements when manganese-silicon alloys and ordinary Spiegel are used in the way described in this report. There are no technical difficulties in the application of this practice, and any difficulties involved in its wide and immediate application would only be those arising from habituated ideas of the necessity of ferromanganese. General acceptance of this practice and development of the available sources of domestic ferro-grade material by already proven processes should make this country independent of foreign ores. In 2004, underground coal mines in the United States reported 3,405 injuries to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Of these, 17 percent were associated with the use of bolting machines, 8 percent with continuous miners, and 4 percent each with scoop/load-haul-dump (LHD), shuttle cars and personnel transport. Analysis of the injury narratives identified five hazards that required attention. They are rock falling from supported roof inadvertent or incorrect operation of bolting machine controls, handling continuous miner cable, collisions while driving underground vehicles and driving or traveling in underground vehicles on rough roadways. The rate of lost-time injuries has steadily decreased during the past 10 years (from more than 10 per 100 FTE in 1995, to six in 2004). However, underground coal mining remains a hazardous industry. One of the contributors to this elevated injury risk is working with or near underground coal mining equipment. Roof bolting machines and continuous miners have been consistently identified as high risk equipment. They account for approximately 24 percent of all injuries to underground coal miners (Sanders and Shaw, 1989). LHD's, shuttle cars and personnel transports are also associated with injuries in underground coal mines (Burgess-Limerick, 2005). Conventional analyses of injury statistics typically provide tables detailing the breakdown of injuries by body part nature of injury or mechanism of injury. Such analyses are worthwhile and may be helpful in tracking broad trends over time. Further information is available in the narrative text field completed for each injury reported. The detail contained in these narratives varies. However, they generally provide some insight into the causes of the injury, such as the activity being performed at the tune of

To make a thorough survey of a coal mine in order to eliminate hazards, the competent safety engineer must be familiar with mere than one branch of engineering. It is essential that he know the properties of mine gases and the methods of detecting them, as well as hew to prevent dangerous as accumulations. It is also essential that he understand the action of overlying strata when the coal is removed, and the proper methods of protection by timbering or other suitable means of support. He must know the value of protective clothing in reducing injuries and mast be informed as to the correct handling and use of explosives to avoid premature blasts, misfires, and ether failures in blasting practice. He must understand hew to operate locomotives and cutting, loading, and various other types of machines to be able to recommend effective safeguards for protecting the men who use them in addition to being informed as 'to these and many ether activities connected with the mining of coal, he must net overlook electrical engineering if he wishes to combat the fire, shook, and ignition hazards attendant upon the use of electrical machinery and circuits in and around the mine intelligently. There are many points relating to safely in the selection, maintenance, and use of electrical circuits and equipment that are perfectly obvious to the electrical engineer but perhaps are not se evident to those not trained in this particular branch of engineering. Engineers of the U.S. Bureau of Mines who have made a special laboratory study of electricity as related to safety in minus haw e also made inspections of electrical installations at a large number of bituminous mines. These inspections have revealed practices and conditions that not only do not contribute to safety but that add nothing to efficiency and economy in the operation of the mine.

In the early winter of 1919 the Pittsburgh petroleum laboratory of the Bureau of Mines undertook the work of testing fuel oil samples representing purchases of the United State Shipping Board for ships sailing from the port of New York. fuel oil was, at this time, being bought on a contract which involved specifications issued by the United States Navy under dace of October 2, 1920 (See Bulletin 1, Oil Division, U. S. Fuel Administration.)The object of the Bureau of Mines in undertaking this inspection work was twofold. (1) The Bureau was in position to give, and the Shipping Board needed, reliable laboratory service for checking the quality of the fuel oil purchased, the value of which ran into millions of dollars for,year's supply. (2) It was believed, and later demonstrated, that the existing specifications did not insure the obtaining of a reliably satisfactory quality of oil.The objection to the specifications concerned the employment of a clause limiting the gravity of the oil. The inadequacy of gravity specifications for several types of petroleum products has long been recognized, and there was every reason to reason to believe that they were no more desirable for fuel oil than for gasoline, kerosene, or lubricating oil. A first and obvious objection was the fact that it is somewhat difficult to make accurate gravity tests on ""heavy"" residuum fuel oils. (The Bureau found it necessary to employ or such tests a rather tedious procedure involving the use of a picnometer and an accurate balance, as the simpler methods, employing hydrometer or displacement balance, proved unreliable in a large proportion of cases.) A second and more important objection was that gravity tests, even when accurately made, do not provide a reliable index of the actual quality of the oil.

This chapter includes tables for 1982 that were not available in time for publication of the 1982 Minerals Yearbook, but does not include corresponding tables for 1983. The value of raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1988 was estimated at $21.1 billion, an increase of $1.5 billion over the value for 1982. This is a reversal of last year's downturn in value from that of 1981, which was the only decrease noted since 1971; hence, an overall trend of increasing values has been maintained for 12 years, except for 1982. Although the reversal is a basis for cautious economic optimism, it is tempered by continued problems in the domestic mining industry: inadequate funds for capital investment and competition with other countries that have lower production costs. Output of metal commodities in 1983 increased for 8 out of 21 metals, and metal values, in general, increased for 9 of the metals. Output of nonmetal commodities was mixed, with 24 nonmetals showing increases, 20 showing decreases, and 2 unchanged. Nonmetal values were also mixed in 1982: 25 showed increases, 20 declined, and 1 was unchanged. Improvements in the international metals market have not been forthcoming because of the continued depressed prices for major metals. Governments in foreign producing countries have been concerned with maintaining employment and continuing foreign exchange flows through mineral exports. Consequently, the excess of supply in the face of shrinking demand brought downward pressure on metal prices in general, except for the precious metals. On the domestic front, this situation means U.S. mining companies must become even more cost efficient. The major trend in the mining industry in 1983 was to cut costs further, reduce or stabilize total production, reduce outlays for major capital equipment, modify existing systems and equipment, and streamline operations. Most of the accomplishments reported herein reflect this trend.

"In a cooperative study by the University of Minnesota and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, diesel exhaust and mineral dust concentrations have been measured for aerosols generated in the laboratory and in five underground coal mines. Three mines utilized diesel-powered haulage equipment and two used all-electric equipment. Two source apportionment techniques have been applied to differentiate between the mineral dust and diesel exhaust aerosol concentrations measured. The first technique, using a micro-orifice, uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) for size selective sampling, is based on modeling aerosol size and the premise that the diesel exhaust portion of the aerosol is predominantly submicron and the mineral dust portion is mostly greater that one micrometer in size. The second technique, Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) modeling, was used to referee the analysis of diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol concentrations from the size selective sampling results.The MOUDI size distribution data were modeled to obtain parameters describing the fine and course fractions of the sampled aerosol and to estimate the contributions to each mode from both mineral dust and diesel exhaust aerosol sources. The results showed the size distribution of the mixed aerosols exhibited two definite modes with the minimum between the modes occurring at 0.8 µm. Less than 5 pct of the coal mine diesel aerosol was found in the coarse size fraction. CMB analysis confirms the original premise for using aerosol size to separate diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol during sampling.Based on the results from the size selective sampling, a personal diesel aerosol sampler has been developed for measuring diesel aerosol mass concentrations. Th.is sampler uses an inertial impactor to size separate the respirable aerosol at 0.8 µm. All material less than 0.8 µm is collected on an after filter for subsequent gravimetric analysis."

On March 6, 1924, the Bureau of Mines approved the ""M.S.A. self-rescuer’ manufactured by the Mine Safety Appliances Co., Pittsburgh, Pa., after the M.S.A- self-rescuer bad passed all the tests and requirements of the Bureau's Schedule 14A4.The purpose of the self-rescuer is to help miners to escape from mines in which fires are burning or explosions have occurred, by providing protection from carbon monoxide for at least one half-hour. The self-rescuer can be used similarly by workers above ground who may through accident become surrounded or entrapped by atmospheres containing carbon monoxide.no hazards threaten the miner, who escapes serious injury by fire or violence in a large mine fire namely, ( 1) asphyxiation by poisonous carbon monoxide gas; and (2) suffocation by insufficient oxygen to support life. In order to save himself, the miner must either erect a barrica4e5 against afterdamp and wait restoration of ventilation and rescue or take a long chance at getting out of the mine through entries not permeated by afterdamp.. The self-rescuer removes the hazard of carbon monoxide poisoning for one half-hour or more, and accordingly greatly increases the miner's chance of saving his life.This paper describes the construction and details of the M.S.A. self-rescuer as approved by the Bureau of Mines, and discusses its performance under test condition"

"Introduction.Investigations of the oil shales of the State of Colorado were begun February 1, 1920, by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the State of Colorado, under cooperative agreement entered into by the Bureau and the State, funds for which were provided by the State. The investigations are for the purpose of determining by large-scale Laboratory retorting tests, those conditions which will produce optimum yield of best quality products from Colorado shales. (For an outline of the work and description of the apparatus, see Gavin, Martin J., and Sharp, Leslie H., ""investigations of the Fundamentals of Oil-shale Retorting,"" Reports of Investigations, Bureau of Mines, July, 1920.)In the preliminary work which is usually required when a new material is being dealt with, certain physical and chemical constants of the shales being investigated, and their products, were determined; these data will be of much value not only to the thorough retorting tests now under way at Boulder, but to engineers who will design and construct oil-shale plants. While the figures presented in this report apply only to the shale used in the determinations, strictly speaking, the shale used was selected to represent, as well as possible, an average of the massive type of oil shale encountered in Colorado. The figures, therefore, can probably be applied with little danger of serious error to any massive Colorado oil shale which yields in the neighborhood of a barrel (42 gallons) of oil to the ton.This paper is based on a more complete article now being prepared in which experimental methods are explained in full, and complete experimental data. For the purpose of presenting the data with as delay as possible, it has been decided to anticipate the more complete article with the present report."

"We have reported previously that crushing or grinding crystalline silica results in the generation of silica-based radicals on the particulate surface and that these radicals can generate hydroxyl radicals in aqueous solution. Data in the present study indicate that freshly ground silica is more cytotoxic and is a more potent activator of alveolar macrophages than comparably sized aged silica. That is, compared to aged silica, fresh silica is 4.2-fold more potent in decreasing the membrane integrity of macro· phages; is 50% more potent in activating hydrogen peroxide secretion by macro· phages; and is 4.frfold more potent in stimulating cellular chemiluminescence. Prosil 28, an organosilane material, is an effective coating agent for fresh silica. It decreases the cytotoxicity of fresh silica by as much as 78% and decreases the ability of fresh silica to induce chemiluminescence from alveolar macrophages by 58%. The data suggest that surface radicals associated with freshly cleaved dust may be an important factor in the induction of pulmonary disease. Furthermore, treating dust with coating agents may substantially decrease toxicity. INTRODUCTIONThe U.S. Department of Labor estimates that over 1.25 million American workers may be exposed to crystalline silica and that nearly 60,000 may be at risk of developing some degree of occupational lung disease (Parkes, 1982; Peters, 1986). Occupations of concern include miners, stone quarry workers, sand and gravel workers, sandblasters, foundry workers, and glass workers. Acute silicosis is characterized by inflammation, alveolar lipoproteinosis, and the rapid development of respiratory disability (Banks, 1986). In contrast, chronic silicosis develops 20-40 yr after initial exposure and is characterized by the appearance of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions and the progressive development of dyspnea (Parkes, 1982; Ziskind et al., 1976)."

"The phosphorus content of an iron ore is a determining factor as regards the value of the ore and also its metallurgical treatment. If some method of treatment, such as concentration, leaching, etc., could be used and the phosphorus con- tent of the ore reduced, it would be an important advancement in the iron mining industry towards the utilization of high phosphorus ores. Large bodies of material toe high in phosphorus to be marketable under present conditions would be made available, and a great deal of ore from the Cuyuna Range and other places, which is relatively high in phosphorus but otherwise suitable for making spiegel, could be reduced in phosphorus content sufficiently to permit its use in furnaces producing speigel.The form in which phosphorus occurs in iron ore is a much disputed question and it probably varies with the type and location of the ore. The statement has been made that ore piles on long exposure to the atmosphere often decrease in their phosphorus content. (Emmons, S.F. - Ore deposits, 1913, p. 652; Leith, C.K., Mesabi iron bearing district, U.S.G.S. Monograph 43, 1903, p. 275) There is described below experiments on the leaching of iron ores high in phosphorus, to determine whether it was economically possible to reduce the phosphorus content appreciably by leaching. As the research had a practical as well as a theoretical application, only low concentration of acids and alkalies were used.A number of variables were tried, among these being: (1) The solvent used, (2) strength of the solvent, (3) volume of solution used, (4) time ore was agitated (5) type of ore, and (6) screen size of the ore. The amount of ore taken was kept constant."
