This is the final report for U.S. Bureau of Mines contract HO-122122, which was in effect from June 30, 1972 through January 4, 1976. The work resulted in the design and construction of a large laboratory scale coal dust burner and the use of this burner to study gaseous and coal dust flammability. A new technique for determining gas phase flammability was developed and the effect of solid and gaseous suppressants on the propagation of coal dust flames was studied. In addition, a technique for measuring the C/H ratio in the flame was developed and the C/H ratio that was measured in a coal dust flame on this burner showed that the burning process was preceeded by pyroysis of the coal dust. Both experimental and theoretical studies showed that radiative trans-port is very important to the propagation of a coal dust flame.

Six major trends that have had and are continuing to have major effects on the use and supplies of pig iron and scrap in the United States are (a) gradual replacement of the basic open hearth furnace (OH) by the basic oxygen furnace(BOF); (b) use of the electric furnaces for the production of plain-carbon steels, a trend which is closely related to the first; (c) United States changing from being a net exporter to a net importer of steel; (d) replacement of ingot casting by strand casting; (e) increased exportation of scrap; and (f) the lack of growth of the capacity of the U. S. steel industry to produce pig iron in the last 5 to 8 years. This report gives an analysis of the relationships between these trends and the use of processes for the production of raw steel in solidified form.

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Also included are tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of Volume I and in the State chapters of Volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

The Olallie RARE II study area has volcanic cinder deposits with a sow potential for development. No mining claims or prospects are known within the study area, and except for common construction materials such as volcanic cinders and stone, no mineral deposits were identified. An evaluation of the geology indicates that metallic mineral deposits are unlikely to exist. No significant metallic concentrations were reported in samples from the area. The only resources in the study area are about 30 million cu yds (23 million cu m) of cinders in three cones. The cinder deposits in the study area cannot compete economically with enormous deposits of similar material in more accesible areas closer to markets. At the present rate of consumption, resources outside the area are adequate far into the future. The geothermal potential of the study area is being evaluated by the U.S. Geological Survey.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes a system to determine the position and heading of a continuous mining machine during the maneuvers required at the face area of a mine. The system consists of commercially available angular position sensors and a computer interface developed and tested at the Bureau. The sensors employed are laser-based scanning devices that report the angular location of retroreflective targets within their 90° field-of-view. The targets are mounted on the continuous mining machine; the laser scanners are mounted on an external reference structure. The computer interface consists of a single-board computer-controller programmed to gather and process the angular position information, and to calculate the machine's position and heading relative to the reference structure. A sensor fusion algorithm will be incorporated into the computer interface programming to increase the accuracy and reliability of the system.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to assess the impact of a directional water spray system on a unique single inlet dust scrubber on a low-profile mining machine. Tests were conducted in a full-scale model mine using a continuous mining machine. Tracer gas was introduced at the face and concentrations of the tracer gas were monitored at the face and in the return. Various parameters tested included mining position, depth of cut, brattice setback, and combinations of scrubber, and directional or symmetrical sprays. Results indicated that either water spray configuration improved the ventilation effectiveness of the scrubber by a factor of 2 to 3. Average face ventilation effectiveness (FVE) values for all testing of the scrubber and directional sprays were 0.95, versus 0.37 for a standard 20-ft blowing curtain without sprays. No FVE values were less than the standard 20-ft blowing results.

U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine the mineral resources and potential of the Moses and Dennison Peak RARE II areas in Tulare County, California. These areas, along the west slope of the Sierra Nevada, are underlain by grarnitic rocks of the Sierra Nevada batholith and contain numerous metasedimentary roof pendants. Silver, copper, and zinc occur in contact-metasomatic deposits within the metasedimentary rocks. In the Moses area, the Powell Mine (fig. 1) contains an estimated 90,000 tons (82,000 t) of subeconomic silver, zinc, and copper resources. The King Solomon Prospect has 3,000 tons (2,700 t) of silicified phyllite containing zinc. On the Helen-Joyce Prospect, 44,000 tons (40,000 t) of gossan occur above a poorly exposed silver-zinc rich zone. Potential exists for additional mineral resources and occurrences at each of these properties.

In 1984, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Mines studied 7,000 acres of the 9,240-acre Little Blitzen Gorge Wilderness Study Area in Harney County, OR, to evaluate its mineral resources. The study area is dominated by a 1,500-ft-deep canyon that was carved by Pleistocene glaciers in gently westward-dipping homoclinal flows of Miocene Steens Basalt. The Bureau reviewed pertinent literature and county mining records During the field investigations, 18 rock samples were collected from basalt dikes, breccia, fractured or porphyritic flows, and 20 alluvial samples from gravel accumulations. Mercury anomalies from sampling by the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries could not be verified. The mercury might have originated -From the Pike Creek Formation, a known mercury-producing unit that may extend into the study area beneath the Steens Basalt. Any epithermal deposit at depth would be expensive to explore and develop.

Coal-clay waste slurries were dewatered in laboratory-and small-scale continuous tests by the Bureau of Mines using polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a flocculant. Dewatering from a nominal 7-wt-pct solids to over 50-wt-pct solids was accomplished using 0.5 lb of PEO per ton of feed in small-scale continuous tests. Parameters such as pH, initial solids content, and PEO concentrations were investigated. Water recovered from dewatering was reused as dilutant for PEO solutions.

The effectiveness of an industry?s safety activities can be gaged best by the accident records of that industry. In an effort to gage conditions in the petroleum industry, and with the objective of helping to reduce the number of accidents in it, the Bureau of Mines from time to time has tabulated, analyzed, and published pertinent statistical information3/. These reports have dealt with distribution, causes, and costs and related phases of accidents for various and collective divisions of the petroleum industry in several sections of the country. This type of study aids the personnel of the Bureau in planning the course of its activities in accident-prevention work and gives useful data to persons engaged or interested in the promotion of safety in the petroleum industry, which will aid them in their efforts to reduce the number and severity of accidents. A majority of petroleum operators and ?service" contractors have acknowledged their responsibility to provide their employees with safe working conditions and to their stockholders for greater economic value of invested capital by establishing safety divisions within their respective organizations. Such divisions have a primary duty, namely, to see that properly designed and guarded machinery and working equipment are furnished the employees and that they are trained in the safest practical methods of performing their work. The heats of formation of gehlenite and talc were determined by hydro-fluoric acid solution calorimetry. The results are reported in terms of the constituent oxides (?H298.15 = -31.1 ± 0.5 kcal/mole for gehlenite and ?H298.15 = -44.9 ± 0.3 kcal/mole for talc) and in terms of the constituent elements (?H298.15 = -952.8 ± 0.7 kcal/mole for gehlenite and ?H298.15 -1,415.5 ± 1.4 kcal/mole for talc).

The Bureau of Mines investigated the convective heat transfer coefficients for recirculated suspensions of 30-micron glass beads in inert gas. Coefficients for the suspensions were not significantly higher than coefficients for the pure gas. Reynolds numbers of the suspensions were 20,000 to 35,000; solids loadings ranged from 0.0 to 0.7 pound per pound of gas. Comparison of the results with published data showed the direction of heat flow to have no effect at the test conditions.

There was little change during 1988 in the production of minerals in Burundi. The Government of Burundi, which banned all commercial mining operations in the country in 1979, lifted the ban on mining of alluvial gold deposits and started a program of small-scale artisan gold mining in October. Along with the legal mining of gold, licensed gold trading counters were established. Other mineral commodities produced were kaolin clay, lime, and peat. In compliance with the Government ban, the only mineral wealth exploited for commercial sale and export was alluvial gold. Through financial assistance from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), a study to inventory the country's mineral resources continued throughout the year. As part of this study, during the year, a West German company undertook a drilling program to further outline the nickel reserves of the Musongati area in central Burundi. Results of the work as of yearend were disappointing, with only 12 million tons of ore identified with better than 2% nickel content proven. Investigations also continued during the year regarding the centrally located deposits of vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite. A Norwegian company contracted to prepare a prefeasibility study for developing the deposit. The British Sulphur Corp. Ltd. was nearing completion of its $1.2 million2 study of the phosphatic limestone deposit at Matongo-Bandaga at yearend. Ore reserves of about 17 million tons grading 11% phosphorus pentoxide (P2O3) had been identified. The phosphate zone overlies a carbonatite rock, which could provide the basis for a cement industry. Additional drilling was planned for 1984. Exploration for gold was underway in 19S3 in northern Burundi through UNDP funding. Several primary deposits of shallow semimassive sulfides with gold values ranging from traces to 11 grams per ton had been discovered. In 2007, a total of 4,639 stone mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Stone mines comprised 31.2% of all mining operations. ? Mines producing the primary commodity of limestone (crushed and broken) comprised the largest number of operations (n=2,051; 44.2%). ? Stone mining operations were located in all states and territories except Delaware and North Dakota. ? Pennsylvania had the most stone mines (n=373; 8.0%), followed by Texas (n=352; 7.6%).

Provide optimum visibility of mining operations while maintaining protection and comfort for ma-chine operators. Approach Cabs and canopies with hydraulically powered variable-height control were developed for several machines and tested in underground mining operations. How It Works From his position in the cab, the operator can raise or lower the cab, selecting a height that offers either more visibility of the working place or greater clearance for tramming. The entire cab enclosure moves up and down on guide rollers that ride on a pair of rails, and is actuated by a hydraulic cylinder controlled from within the cab. Normal working heights, for each of the four different cabs developed, are with the cab bottom from 6 to 8 inches above the mine bottom. A typical range of elevation (excursion) afforded by this design is shown in Figure 1.

The Belizean economy registered a modest real growth of 1.3% during 1981. The gross domestic product (GDP), based on current prim was $121 million' with an inflation-rate of 10%. The country received $19 million in economic aid during 1981. In early 1981, Belize'e four commercial banks raised the interest on deposits to 15% in an effort to curb capital outflow. During 1981, the financial situation deteriorated somewhat, particularly the balance of payments. For the year the total value of imports exceeded exports by almost $38 million, while the Government continued to maintain a fairly free trade policy. Import duties and term averaged about 8% on essential item and 40% on nonessential ones.
