In 1969, Queensland Mines Limited obtained two large Prospecting Authorities in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia. The Nabarlek uranium deposit containing some 12 000 t of U308 was discovered on one of these in June 1970. Mining and stockpiling of this deposit were completed in 1979 and processing to yellowcake, which commenced in June 1980, is expected to occupy an 8-10 year period. The continuation of exploration, essential for the company to become a longer- term producer, was inhibited in 1972 by a Federal Government "freeze" on exploration in Aboriginal Reserves in the Northern Territory. Subsequently, the procedure for explorers to gain access to exploration areas in Aboriginal land was radically changed by the proclamation of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976. As a result of this Act and the associated administrative policies adopted by Governments, Queensland Mines Limited has not yet regained access to the exploration areas it formally held in the early 1970's.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines installed surface and subsurface instruments at a mine site in Colorado to monitor and characterize the overburden response to longwall mining. Instrumentation included a time-domain reflectometry (TDR) cable, a multiple-point borehole extensometer (MPBX), vertical- deformation surface monuments, and in-mine pressure cells for monitoring abutment, pillar, and gob loads with respect to the longwall face position. The purpose of the study was to collect data that could be analyzed to correlate the design of the mine layout to the resulting overburden failure response. Determining the extent of caving and fracturing is important in the and and semiarid Western United States because of the possible consequences to the fragile underground hydrologic systems upon which the land owners and users depend. This study is unique from past investigations because the overburden contains massive sandstone members that impose special conditions on the caving process and pressure redistribution above the longwall panels. This paper presents the results of this correlation study.

Conveyor belt haulage offers the advan tages of continuity of operation, minimum labour requirements, and the ability to handle large volumes of material over extended periods. However, breakdown of critical con- veyors in the system can cause undue and substantial losses in production output at the working faces, unless adequate surge bin capacity is incorporated in the haulage system. A conveyor belt simulation programme, code name 'Beltsim' was developed by Bucklen et al (1968) at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in the U.S.A. and provides a quantitative measure of the performance of a conveyor belt network design. A limitation still exists with the computer programme and involves the inability of the programme to predict the necessary surge bin capacity to overcome conveyor belt downtime. The computer programme was modified to overcome this limitation, to simulate a con- veyor belt breakdown, and to provide a quantitative prediction of the surge bin capacity necessary to permit a modern mining system to operate effectively and continuously.

ecent work on decoppering lead is reviewed; CuS is formed rapidly even from dilute solutions of copper in lead. he mechanism of decoppering is discussed, and an explanation for the retention of metals such as silver in lead is dvanced. As decoppering tin appears to be an analogous process, the Cu-Sn-S system is studied at 300¦C. CuS, hich is not, an equilibrium product, is found in decoppering drosses. In the removal of nickel from lead, Ni3pb2S2 formed; preliminary measurements show the equilibrium nickel content to be greater than that obtained by tirring in sulphur. Decoppering bismuth is thermodynamically favoured, but is complicated by the occurrence of uBiS2. The Cu-Pb-S system is the only one of the four studied where the equilibrium can be calculated simply, as ' resence of ternary sulphide or other phases invalidates calculations based on binary data.

The Bureau of Mines equipped a longwall shearer with a water- jet-assisted cutting system and measured dust levels during the cutting of a simulated coal block. The block was cut dry, at a conventional water spray pressure of 1 MPa and with water-jet-assisted cutting pressures ranging from 7 to 40 MPa. At water pressures of 20 MPa and higher, dust concentrations were reduced by as much as 85 % via water-jet-assisted cutting in comparison with conventional water sprays. This reduction was achieved without any increase in the water flow rate.

The direct method of gas content determin ation developed by McCulloch and Diamond of the U.S.B.M. has been adapted to estimate the gas content of coal seams from slim exploration borecores in the Southern Coalfield. Emphasis has been placed on the measurement of this parameter without the physical destruction of the core which is required for subsequent chemical analysis. In field and laboratory equipment is simple and inexpensive. It enables the determination of lost and desorbed gas from a fresh geological core. Residual gas is not measured but is considered to be relatively low and of no consequence in ventilation considerations. Results to date show good correlation with those obtained from underground face samples. Gas contents from the mined seams varying from 2 m3/tonne to 14 m3/tonne have been measur- ed with this apparatus. Gas desorption characteristics of South Coast coals have been found to closely follow exponential mathematical Models.

A composite iron ore-reductant pellet is a mixture of fine iron ore and fines of coal/char/coke, bonded at essentially room temperature with sufficient green strength for subsequent handling. In ironmaking, these pellets offer the advantage of fast reduction, utilisation of fines, non-coking coal and coke breeze. The composite pellet-based alternative ironmaking processes constitute a promising route for ironmaking in future. The present paper is a brief review of kinetics and mechanism of reduction of iron oxides into iron and other associated reactions, when these pellets are heated to high temperature. It would draw significantly from investigations conducted by the author and his co-workers.

Same-batch and non-blind as well as blind pulp duplicates are often submitted as quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) control samples to a routine laboratory along with routine assays (and other control samples such as reference material samples). The current ways of interpreting the results of duplicate assays to derive QA/QC conclusions and decisions, however, has not yet been formalised in a scientific manner. The current, prevailing approach and its limitations are reviewed and a new method is proposed as a substitute tool. This new tool should allow for operational error detection on a batch per batch basis (ie batch rejection) as well as laboratory performance assessment with time on reproducibility.

The use of solid state detector and radioisotope x-ray source for x-ray fluorescence analysis is illustrated by analysis for iron, copper, zinc, tin, and lead in about 700 samples taken from Australian mineral process streams. Limits of detection based on counting statistics (3 standard deviations) range from 0·001 to 0·004 per cent by weight element. The analysis accuracy was usualIy between 2 to 10 per cent (rms) of the mean element concentration and was determined by comparison with assays supplied by mineral companies. In most cases the main cause of error appears to be due to this assay and not the x-ray fluorescence technique.Some potential fields of application of solid state detector and radioisotope x-ray source for analyses in the mineral industry are indicated.

I had hoped when the time came for me to address this meeting that gold mining would be in a much happier position than we find it to-day.As it is, and because of the demands of national security, we find this great and valuable primary industry relegated to the background and in danger of temporary extinction.These notes refer mainly to gold mining in Western Australia, whence comes the major portion of Australia's production, and their purpose is to record a brief review of the industry immediately prior to the general disorganization that is following the call-up of men from the mines.During this period of reduced production the loss of comparable statistical data will make it impossible to follow the progress of the industry, and, since the period may be long, it occurred to me that information might be derived from an examination of the trend of recent production that would indicate what may be expected of the industry when full production is resumed in the future.Since the revival of gold mining, which started in 1931, most of the old-established mines have reorganized and, in some cases, completely renewed and enlarged their equipment in order to achieve maximum production, and old mines hitherto unpayable have been re-opened and equipped. At the same time large sums have been spent in scientific prospecting and in search for new mines, and it is safe to say that at the end of 1939, when gold production reached its peak, practically every known mine in Western Australia that could be worked profitably was in production.During this period the number of men employed in the industry rose from 5,961 in 1931 to approximately 15,000 in 1939. From the outbreak of war in 1939 to the end of 1941 the output from the mines was maintained at full pressure, maximum tonnage beingrecorded in 1940, although a reduction in the grade of ore treated caused a slight falling off in gold production.During 1941 there was a. fall in both tonnage and grade. The decline in tonnage was due partly to the closing of the Lancefield and Mount Magnet mines, and partly to the shortage of labour brought about by the response of the goldfields to the call for men for the fighting services, the average number of men in the industry in this year being reduced to 12,929.With the entry of the United States into the war in December last and the pooling of the resources of the allied nations, the need for gold as a purchasing medium passed, and with its passing there arose the demand for the transfer of the man-power engaged in gold mining to other fields of industry directly connected with the war effort.There was a ready response by those connected with the industry who...

Much effort over the years has been put into the task of devising parameters which adequately assess the metallurgical efficiency of mineral processmg operations. One of the most celebrated of these methods is the so-called "release analysis" method of Dell (1953) which tackles the problem in terms of an ideal separation based on sequential retreatment of the products and tails of a given separation process. Other methods have also been proposed by Jowett (1969) and by Holland-Batt (1971 ). While these procedures are appropriate to multi-component mineralogical separations, they perhaps do not lend themselves to the much more simple two-component systems encountered in coal preparation. However Dell (1962) has suggested the use of the term "specific profit" in coal preparation in order to assess the conditions that give maximum economic gain. Specific profit is derived from data relating washability data with equipment performance and operating costs. The procedure for using this criterion for comparative purposes is therefore somewhat cumbersome as is illustrated by its lack of widespread acceptance in the coal preparation literature.In contrast, an efficiency index, E, which is both simple and meaningful from the utilitarian standpoint, has been proposed by Tsiperovich and Evtushenko (1959a). This index is defined by the relation, E = Yield X Tailings ash/Product ash (1) A cursory examination of this parameter shows that it increases when yield and tailings ash increase and also when product ash decreases; all of which are desirable circumstances in coal cleaning operations.Further, it will be shown that slight variations in operation are amplified by this function which makes comparisons simple and direct.While the use of this index is quite extensive in the Soviet coal preparation literature for some reason it has not received wide usag~ elsewhere.

This paper looks at recent advances in the United Kingdom (UK) tunnelling industry with particular reference to the A3 Hindhead Project. A 1.8 km long twin bore tunnel is the centrepiece of the A3 Hindhead scheme, which commenced construction in 2007 and is being delivered under a UK Highways Agency early contractor involvement (ECI) contract. The proposed construction methodology is progressive mechanical excavation of a horseshoe-shaped tunnel with shotcrete installed close behind the face using robotic spraying equipment. The tunnelling medium is a æsoft rockÆ sandstone for which there was little previous tunnelling experience, requiring extensive geotechnical investigations and an innovative approach to lining design. A 240 m long section though sandy material utilising a steel pipe umbrella is also required. This paper describes the development of the tunnel planning and design including the most recent developments in UK road tunnels. The innovative approach to the design of the following is discussed:the æpermanentÆ primary lining,an observational technique allowing optimisation of the steel pipe umbrella design,a plain concrete secondary lining designed for resistance to a hydrocarbon fire, anda spray-applied membrane.

After relining one of two blast furnaces and enlarging its sinter plant in 2009, BlueScope radically restructured its Port Kembla steelworks operation in 2011, shutting a blast furnace and halving its total production. This drastic move in response to unprecedented raw material prices relative to achievable steel prices was like that of many integrated steelmakers worldwide facing similar challenges. The 2011 restructure also saw major changes in the amount and type of iron ores and ferrous burdens purchased, and a fundamental reappraising of ‘value’ in iron ores. This paper outlines the changes to raw materials purchases from 2011 to 2017, how BlueScope has responded to the changes in pricing and raw materials quality, the effect on the sintering and blast furnace processes at Port Kembla resulting from higher gangue content, some of the broad technical and economic challenges faced by steelmakers confronted with lower quality iron ores and how BlueScope is meeting those challenges.CITATION:Di Giorgio, N, Bennett, A, Osborne, B and Chew, S, 2017. Higher bed height up to 680 mm, including 30 mm hearth layer of sized return sinter and high suction below the grate bars up to 1400 mm WG have resulted in increasing the productivity to a level of 33 t/m2/day and reduced coke rate to a level of 46 kg/tonne sinter. The ferro-wastes like blue dust, flue dust, mill scale, collection from dust catcher and gas cleaning plant, etc have been successfully added in charge mix to produce quality sinters. In this paper, brief description of the work done at Regional Research Laboratory (CSIR) in last few years and two case studies are discussed including the successful development of pan sintering units.

There are several well-known, extensively researched and tested methods of suppressing a coalmine methane and coal dust explosion. The choice of method used is dependent on the legislative requirements of each country, which in turn are influenced by mining conditions in that jurisdiction. For example, seam gas content and the dustiness of the coal will combine to create the hazard, while the physical and chemical properties of the seam might influence the possibility of ignition sources such as frictional ignitions. The mining method and layout will also influence the choice of preventative or proactive suppression devices. The decision as to which method is approved and adopted should be based on currently tested and available technology and the latest research outcomes, and should be subjected to a rigorous risk assessment, since a methane explosion propagating into a coal dust explosion cannot be countenanced.Every new technology must undergo stringent tests and these tests must be certified by accredited research facilities or laboratories. Upon approval, an explosion suppression system or the critical components of such a system should be tested in a more realistic environment. This environment can ideally be found in an operating underground mining section for evaluation purposes. Based on the insight gathered in such an environment, a realistic evaluation of the effectiveness of a potential system can be carried out. The explosion suppression system described in this paper has been tested on numerous occasions at accredited test facilities. The technology described in this paper has been used in various applications in underground coalmines and has been adapted to fulfil and exceed the requirements set out for methods currently in use. The alkaline ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) leach process for extracting tungsten from scheelite (CaW04) ores has been examined for the treatment of low grade (<0.5 per cent WO,) residue dumps. The process has been considerably simplified by applying solvent extraction directly to the leach liquor.Ammonium paratungstate is thereby produced in a one step process and this obviates the need to physically recover EDTA prior to recycling. This modified process should be an economical method of tungsten extraction.
