Newmont Australia is the operator of the Mt Leyshon mine near Charters Towers, Queensland. Mt Leyshon is an open cut gold mine, which processed on average 5.0 Mt of ore and produced up to 250 000 ounces of gold per year. Mining was completed in early-2001, followed by treatment of low-grade ore stockpiles for a further 12 months. Approximately 250 ha of waste rock dumps have been rehabilitated. Rehabilitation of two of the three tailings storage facilities (TSF) has been completed and the third is in progress. A field performance monitoring system that includes an automated meteorological station, large-scale lysimeters (measurement of net percolation), and in situ moisture content sensors (measurement of moisture storage changes in the cover material) were installed to monitoring performance of the cover systems placed on the waste storage facilities. This paper focuses on the installation and calibration of the in situ moisture monitoring system. The moisture monitoring system provides automated detailed in situ volumetric water content data above and within the large-scale lysimeters. A portable unit that provides spatial in situ moisture content measurements at additional locations on the cover system is also utilised. The paper will focus on installation and calibration of the in situ water content monitoring instrument in the waste rock, coarse cover material, and fine textured cover materials of the tailings facility and waste rock dump cover systems.

Australian companies and consultants are becoming ever more involved in projects in African, South American, East European and Middle Eastern countries. However, significant differences in culture and approach to projects sometimes make these projects challenging for reasons that are not purely technical. Often the challenges are rather related to how the project owner and local authorities perceive the reality. These perceptions and sometimes unrealistic expectations regarding project costs and potential outcomes need to be addressed by the æWesternÆ project developer and consultant.This paper will discuss the specific experience of Snowden in studies commissioned by companies from such countries for the development of very large, low-grade gold deposits in some of the most inhospitable areas in the world. The paper will further review similar projects undertaken in other ænew worldÆ countries and compare these to the initial Snowden experience.As the process operating costs of operations in many of these countries are extremely competitive when compared to the typical Australian operating costs, the paper will review the operating costs and the factors which may be pertinent to a large project of this nature, both in the Australian and the ænew worldÆ context. "The Cerro Corona mine consists of a Cu-Au porphyry deposit located in the Andes of northern Peru. The deposit comprises a typical Cu-Au multiphase porphyry mineralisation that has been overprinted by an epithermal event. This has generated a complex pattern of argillic alteration facies, which was accompanied by a locally structural-controlled Au-Cu mineralisation with the presence of gold and limited Cu sulfides and sulfosalts. These features, along with the porphyry-style mineralisation, produced a multifaceted occurrence of gold.Since the beginning of operations at Cerro Corona in 2008 there has been a continuous improvement of the geological and mineralogical knowledge. All mineralogical studies have mainly focused on host rock types and, to a lesser extent, alteration minerals, but little work has been done on the mineralisation itself. As a consequence, limited mineralogical information was available for use in the process optimisation initiatives.In the last two years, a series of mineralogical characterisation studies were undertaken with two main goals. First, to gain an understanding of the mineralisation genesis and second, to obtain a detailed characterisation of copper and gold minerals to support ongoing process optimisation. The first goal was achieved by conventional optical microscopy while the second required electronic microscopy and other microanalyses due to the necessity of quantifying several minerals of interest for the processing.The results were used to refine pre-existing geometallurgical domains, explain copper and gold losses in the flotation process and to some extent, improve copper and gold recoveries. The mineralogical characterisation is an ongoing work. The Mt. Wright Underground Mine is located near the town of Ravenswood in North Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited. The establishment of the world’s first Sub Level Shrinkage (SLS) mine from a tradition Sub Level Open Stoping operation has proven to be a geotechnical challenge which has required tailored solutions to overcome unique issues. This paper will be broken into two distinct sections that will outline: a brief overview of the mining method and how the SLS method was chosen; and how the SLS is managed and key geotechnical learnings. The story of the world’s first SLS originated from the need of a bulk mining method to ensure the viability of Mt. Wright into the future. Traditional bulk mining methods such as; Block or Sublevel Caving were originally ruled out due to the low natural ‘cavability’ of the orebody and the proximity of the orebody to existing major infrastructure (Decline, Ventilation Rises and Egresses). The first section of the paper will outline the key geotechnical information that helped decide the SLS method in addition to how continuous backfill influenced the design. The second section is intended to address issues that the geotechnical engineers encountered since the inception of the SLS. The feature topic of this section is mining induced stress. Like most bulk mining methods, Mt. Wright had success when the production front was running parallel to the stress (production front being ‘shadowed’ from the stress). This was until a design change, forced by a splitting ore body resulted in this shadowing effect becoming harder to achieve. As a result, rehabilitation and production hole re-drilling become a regular occurrence, which teamed with a strict set of access controls made the production cycle longer and harder to complete. Segment and gasket lining in tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnels; and sheet membrane lining systems in driven tunnels are robust waterproofing systems each with a proven history of performance in Australia and further afield. Where an interface between these two systems occurs, the potential for costly failures is vastly increased and additional attention to detail is required in design, planning and construction. TBM cross-passages represent the most common occurrence of this interface, with steel compression flanges and neoprene gaskets being the typical means of connecting the waterproofing systems. There is a large variance in both detailing these flanges and associated outcomes, which makes this an area where there is room for improvement within the industry.The paper will look to tease out the various issues associated with this interface and how they can be dealt with efficiently with appropriate design measures, robust planning and carefully controlled construction methods.The paper will also look to review the new technologies and systems currently being put forward as potential alternatives, including an epoxy tape system, which has recently been successfully trialled on a project in Europe under high-pressure head.CITATION:O’Dwyer, E P, 2014. The Savage River open cut magnetite mine is located in rugged terrain in densely rain forested northwest Tasmania. The mine and concentrating plant are both in the Savage River valley. Pickand Mather Incorporated (PMI) operated Savage River as an open cut magnetite mine between 1966 and 1996. Acid rock drainage (ARD) was first noted in the last ten years of the operation, leading to elevated concentrations of heavy metals downstream of the mine. When operations ceased in 1996, PMI returned the mine to the Tasmanian Government along with a remediation fund of $11.4 million. At that time, the assessed cost of remediation was in excess of $120 million. As a result of the ongoing ARD contamination and to facilitate both a new operation and effective remediation, Goldamere Pty Ltd negotiated an agreement with the Tasmanian Government in 1996, which resulted in the Goldamere Act and the Goldamere Agreement. The agreement has allowed Australian Bulk Minerals (ABM) to remediate the Savage River mine in conjunction with the Tasmanian Government while re-invigorating a previously closed mine by providing ABM with an indemnity against past pollution. ABM can configure its mine and waste planning activities to maximise remediation benefits without fear of future litigation for past mistakes. The effect to date has been the development of a long-term strategy to remediate the Savage River and short-term remediation works such as water management, which provide benefits to the ecosystem. After five years, the Savage River is no longer significantly impacted by ARD for 30 kilometres downstream and trout are now reported within the reaches of the mining lease. The arrangements between ABM and the Tasmanian Government are an example of a genuine WIN WIN situation where co-operative environmental management of the site results in significant improvements and where the æregulatorÆ and the æminerÆ are working together to achieve mutually beneficial goals. The end result is a significant benefit to Tasmania.

In 2015, MMG Limited commenced further action to improve operating margins and establish a blueprint for future growth in the Australian environment. This action was taken in the context of weakening metal prices and high input costs that arose during the Australian minerals boom.MMG was formed in June 2009 following the purchase of the majority of assets of OZ Minerals Limited by China Minmetals Corporation (CMC) through its subsidiary China Minmetals Non-ferrous Metals Co Ltd (CMN).Since formation MMG has been implementing a business model to deliver a standard way of operating. The overarching purpose of the business model is to enable fast integration of acquired assets to realise improved productivity and performance. CMN established MMG as a vehicle to reach their growth targets through further development or acquisition of mineral assets in jurisdictions external to mainland China.The business model is underpinned by the MMG operating model. The operating model defines how MMG is arranged to deliver the company strategy.This paper describes the application of the operating model to the formation of the Australian operations into a single business unit from multiple stand-alone operating sites. The development and impact of the business model on MMG’s performance is also presented.The extension of the operating model to the Australian operations has led to improvement in safety performance, direct costs and productivity. These improvements have been achieved through reducing duplication, simplification of systems and rapid deployment of improvement initiatives.The successful implementation of the operating model to Australian operations strengthens the platform for further growth. Throughout the study phases (scoping, prefeasibility and feasibility) of new mining projects one is forced to work with and make predictions based upon limited date obtained from diamond and reverse circulation drill holes. These data are extrapolated to determine how much of the valuable metal is present in the ground, how it can be recovered it and the efficiency of this recovery. Mining methods to extract the ore are investigated with forecasts made regarding excavation stoping stability and performance in an attempt to optimise production. Extraction and use of rock mass data for use in characterising the mechanical behaviour of the rock mass is no exception. One often relies heavily upon the use of empirical charts developed over many years on hundreds of case histories based upon rock mass characterisation schemes. This is largely successful and indicative of what one might expect. However specific site characteristics can always play a significant role, and are not necessarily apparent in diamond drill core. Feasibility studies for the Favona orebodies indicated that the rock mass was generally poor to extremely poor, and that stoping conditions would be difficult in all of the orebodies for various reasons. A range stope performances were achieved ranging from very good to very poor and in some cases unexpected results were achieved. A comparison is made between what was actually achieved and what was expected since stoping commenced in 2007. Explanations are attempted for differences in stoping performance and, in some cases, unexpected results at the Favona underground mine are attempted.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is expected to become one of the main technological instruments for mid-term reduction of CO2 emissions into the earthÆs atmosphere. Besides the reduction of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, the implementation of CCS would have various negative consequences, which are û if at all û only poorly covered in the current socio-political discussion. Taking into account all aspects of CCS, the outcome of a comprehensive and conclusive assessment of CCS against the background of the sustainable development concept is uncertain. When assessing the overall impact of CCS in a holistic approach, a variety of aspects with effects on sustainable development are affected. Besides economic issues, various other effects of implementing CCS should be taken into consideration. These include for example additional costs for CCS facilities and processes and a decrease in powerplant efficiency due to high energy requirements of capture processes, and various ecological and societal aspects, such as higher demand for combustible, resulting in faster depletion of reserves and higher land and water use and the provision of jobs along CCS technology chain. This paper presents an approach for a structured sustainability assessment of CCS based on the multi attribute decision-making (MADM) method analytical hierarchy process (AHP). The functioning of the presented methodology is exemplified at the case study of a German coal fired powerplant.

Project financing challenges caused by declining commodity prices have heightened the need to improve project metrics such as minimising capital payback and maximising net present value (NPV). Khnaiguiyah Mining Company (KMC) recognised the need to improve early cash flows at their Khnaiguiyah zinc-copper project after initial studies showed the project could not provide the desired financial outcomes necessary to compete for investment dollars in the current market.A significant improvement to the project cash flow in early years was realised through simultaneous optimisation of cut-off grade, mining sequence and strategic stockpiling. This improvement was achieved by accelerating mining in the pits, stockpiling lower value material and feeding higher value material directly to the plant. The schedule required higher mining and stockpile capacities than the sequential mine plan although minimal change occurred in the definition of ore and waste as measured by tonnes and grade. BHP Billiton Olympic Dam produces copper cathode, uranium oxide concentrate and refined gold and silver. The operation is comprised of an underground Mine and Processing Plant and is located 560 km north of Adelaide. Water for the operation is sourced from two wellfields located 120 and 200 km from the operation in the Great Artesian Basin (GAB) at a rate of approximately 36 ML/d. Regulatory drawdown limits were established to protect regional GAB springs and are monitored at compliance bores. Drawdown was predicted in the æOlympic Dam Environmental Impact StudyÆ (Kinhill, 1997); however, pumping at higher volumes may have the potential for increased drawdown resulting in a trend towards the compliance limits. In recent years increased usage of water in the Concentrator and Hydromet sections of the Processing Plant has caused excess process water reporting to the Tailings Retention System (TRS). This has resulted in excessive amounts of liquor ponding on the tailings cells with a potential impact being contamination due to seepage of liquor to groundwater. Effective management of water by the operation is necessary to both reduce GAB drawdown and reduce the amount of liquor on the tailings cells. A site working-group has been established to investigate and pursue opportunities to improve the water use efficiency of the operation. This paper will highlight the issue of water management at Olympic Dam and discuss the various options currently being investigated to improve management of this important resource.

Although much talked about, social licence to operate (SLTO) is a relatively new concept that has been deemed as one of the four biggest business risks to a mining project over the life-of-mine. There is no accepted single definition of SLTO and this author understands SLTO to be stakeholder perception of the legitimacy of a project, a company or an industry. At a specific site, and across different sites within the same organisation, SLTO ranges through different levels according to stakeholders’ degrees of acceptance in time and space. Management of SLTO is vital for the mining sector but is difficult as it is informal and intangible. Although there are no key performance indicators, there are certain indicators that enable relative measurement of the ‘level’ of the SLTO. Because of the importance of the SLTO, information management during the entire life-of-mine, from exploration to rehabilitation, becomes crucial for the continued operation of a project. Flotation feed density is an operating parameter which is currently not well understood. Most models of flotation only incorporate its effect on particle residence time, but it is likely to have additional effects within both the pulp and froth phases of the machine. Test work was performed in MetsoÆs 3 m3 RCS test rig to investigate the effect of flotation feed density on metallurgical performance. The rig was operated at Rio TintoÆs Northparkes operation using flotation feed and scavenger tail. For each feed, tests were performed at different feed densities, and measurements were performed to estimate the pulp and froth recovery as well as other key flotation parameters (eg bubble size, turbulence and froth stability). Results of this test work have shown that the pulp density does affect key parameters of the flotation process in both the pulp and froth phases. Pulp phase kinetic rates decrease at high density and this is attributed to a reduction in the turbulence within the cell. Froth phase recovery, however, improves presumably because of a stabilising effect due to a greater loading of solids on bubble surfaces.There is a need for more research to be done to better understand these interactions so that metallurgists can determine the optimum flotation feed density to use at a particular operation, or within a section of a flotation circuit.CITATION:Runge, K C, Tabosa, E, Crosbie, R and McMaster, J K, 2012. Pipe umbrella systems have effectively been used as an additional support system in the working area in weak ground conditions during the last decades. Thus, a considerable number of applications accounts in urban tunnelling with shallow overburden. However, this support system is also successfully used when a tunnel alignment crosses fault zones, sediments, moraines or talus with overburdens from shallow to deep. The pipe umbrella support system itself is termed differently worldwide – synonyms are canopy tube umbrella method, umbrella arch method, or long fore-poling method.One main reason for the increase in application is that this support system closes cost-effectively the gap between reasonable, normal supported tunnels and tunnels supported with more expensive special techniques like horizontal jet-grouting or ground freezing. By using this system, many projects can be built more cost effective without decreasing the common level of safety.The pipe umbrella construction method is pretty young, so the knowledge about this system has been intensely researched in the last decade. This led to an enormous increase in understanding the interaction between support system and surrounding ground, the mode of action, and the important details for construction.Pipe umbrella support systems are applied in difficult ground conditions, so a special developed measurement arrangement was used to observe deformations ahead of the working face during tunnelling. The evaluation of collected data sets identifi ed that cased-drilling systems have clear advantages compared to predrilling systems during the installation process in weak ground conditions. This may become important depending on project requirements, so this difference must be considered in design as well as in the tender document specifications.

AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd operates an underground mine below a large open pit at the Sunrise Dam Gold Mine near Laverton in Western Australia. Operations are based on an extensive mineralised zone which has very complex geometry, has a high ‘nugget effect’, and is difficult to interpret and model. Initial underground ore was produced from relatively narrow orebodies dipping from 15º - 70º. Open stopes aimed to selectively extract high-grade ore, using methods including jumbo stripping and longhole drilling and blasting. The complex geology makes it difficult to accurately locate development and stopes in the positions required for profitable production. In narrow stopes, rock mass damage and overbreak dilute ore grades and increase the cost per ounce of gold poured. In flat orebodies, several different techniques have been used to recover blasted ore but overall productivity is low. Thus selective mining can also be slow, costly and recovers only a portion of the available mineral resources. Large longhole open stopes with cemented paste backfill are used to extract multiple zones of mineralisation from the Cosmo and GQ orebodies. Bulk emulsion explosives and electronic detonators are used in all large stope blasts to reduce the risk of misfires and to accurately control blasthole initiation sequences and delay timing. Larger stopes improve productivity and significantly reduce direct mining costs, enabling the use of lower economic cut-off grades which increase the overall recovery of mineral resources. This paper reviews the evolution of open stoping at Sunrise Dam, the various mining methods and drilling and blasting practices used, the results achieved, and the lessons learned.

Ever increasing depth of mineral extraction presents a challenging environment for hard rock underground mines. High in situ stresses and associated seismicity with potential rock burst hazards are the major decisive factors contributing to the choice of a ground support regime. Conventional ground support systems, designed primarily for static loads, are not always capable of providing safe working conditions for underground personnel in seismically active mines. Systems specifically developed to resist dynamic loading and allowing for larger deformations are therefore preferred alternatives. High-tensile chain-link mesh has a proven record of successful use in open cut operations in various rockfall barrier installations due to its high energy absorption capacity. It has also been used in underground operations in various parts of the world. Its application in Australian underground mining, however, is limited due to the high labour intensity. This paper describes a method of mechanised installation of a chain-link mesh as trialled at Golden Grove, a base metals underground mine in Western Australia. A purpose-built mechanised roll mesh handler, developed in Australia, was used in this trial. The handler is compatible with all standard multi-boom underground drill rigs and is operated utilising the hydraulic circuit normally used for the feed arrangement.A number of operational benefits have been identified during the trial, the main two being:•improved safety of underground personnel due to the reduced amount of manual handling, and•increased productivity due to the decreased cycle time (the trial suggests a 40 - 50 per cent reduction in time over the weld mesh installation method).Although the energy-absorbing mesh combined with yielding rock bolts is a ground support system of choice for rock burst prone conditions, the operational upsides recognised during the trial imply that this product can also be competitively used in less demanding ground conditions where customarily weld mesh or shotcrete are used as a primary surface support.

During 2009 the technical services staff at Barrick Gold Corporation's Australian Business Unit conducted a review of their five underground mines that utilise pastefill as the backfill component for these operations. Of the five mines reviewed three use dry tailings and two use wet tailings plants. The primary aim for these reviews was to determine whether pastefill was the right option to be used, and if not, what where the alternatives. The reviews undertaken focus on several areas including, paste plant operation, reticulation and barricade techniques, the geotechnical requirements for pastefill in regards to the current mining methods, the consideration of alternative methods, capital and operating cost histories compared to initial estimates, and a cost benefit analysis of pastefill against other mining methods. The main benefits from the use of pastefill is increasing the extraction of the resource, reducing or eliminating the need to leave pillars. In some mines the use of pastefill is geotechnically driven, to manage high stress environments or mining induced seismicity. A third benefit of using pastefill in some circumstances is that it reduces dilution, however it is considered that this is not a valid argument for most of the mines reviewed. At two mines no alternative to pastefill was determined, whilst differing extraction and filling strategies were potentially identified at the other three mines. The reviews developed cost benefit curves for those sites that had alternative mining methods to assist in determining whether pastefill is the right option to use for any particular stope. At the grades typically mined in each operation, pastefill was the preferred option to use. In all mines, pastefill was determined to be the best option at this time.

This paper is concerned with the influence of engineering geology on design of Wall Control Blasts. In the Introduction, the Blast Management Framework and the Blast Design Requirements classification system (previously developed by the author) is drawn upon to set the context. Blasting objective for all wall control blasts involves both profile and damage control. Four classes of approaches for blast design are outlined and briefly discussed. Five distinct wall control blasting techniques are summarised. The general relationship between geology and blast design is explored in the paper. Influence of geology on pre-split and post-split design and blasting direction is highlighted. Wall damage modelling from the closest row of blastholes is also introduced using the Analytical Damage Model (ADM). The relationship of rock properties and explosive selection and in particular the Mach wave generation is introduced to assist blast designer in this regard. Finally a Conceptual Model that relates vibration, damage and rock mass condition has been presented along with some applications that have been undertaken by the developer. Eight conclusions have been formulated based on extensive work in this area and the current study.

The MTM Process targets treating lower grade and/or problem concentrates that are not attractive to smelters. The process has been developed at laboratory scale for copper and is based on a related development for zinc that has been extensively developed both in the laboratory and through pilot testing. The basis of the process is novel ammonia-ammonium chloride leach chemistry adapted to give high copper extraction whilst being selective over iron, arsenic and many other elements. The preferred flow sheet depends on location, especially infrastructure and utilities. These impact upon the leach and crystallisation stages more than copper reduction.
