Fine Gravity Separation in the Reflux Classifier, Exploiting a High Shear Rate, Laminar Flow Mechanism The Reflux Classifier is used in the gravity separation of particles over a broad range of particle sizes. The device consists of a fluidised bed zone, with a system of parallel inclined channels above. The inclined channels provide a significant hydraulic advantage over conventional fluidised beds via the so-called Boycott Effect (Boycott, 1920). This paper describes a new advance in fine gravity separation based on the high shear rate and laminar flow profile that arises when closely spaced inclined channels are deployed. As reported recently (Galvin et al, 2009a), a powerful density based separation mechanism develops from this arrangement, suppressing the effects of particle size. In this paper we focus on two areas, firstly the application of the separator in the laboratory for batch fractionation of particles of varying size and density to determine the grade recovery curve and hence the liberation, and secondly the step change in separation performance achieved on a continuous steady state basis when closely spaced inclined channels are used. The variation in the separation density with particle size decreases significantly, and the Ecarte Probable Error (Ep) remains at low levels over a broad size range.

Any hypothesis for the origin of the Otago gold-quartz lodes must account for the following observations. 1. Southeast of Glenorchy, where the schists hosting the lodes are comparatively unaffected by Neogene Alpine Fault deformation, the dominant strike of the vein systems is NW-SE, parallel to the axis of greatest post-metamorphic uplift in the Otago Schist belt (Paterson, 1986). 2. The lodes are fault-hosted, with some developed along steep, low-displacement normal faults (eg Barewood, Bendigo, Nenthorn), implying NE-SW extension, and some developed along low-angle thrusts (eg Macraes) implying, in apparent contradiction, NE-SW contraction (Teagle et al, 1990). 3. The mineralising fluid was of metamorphic origin (McKeag and Craw, 1989), but while some of the lodes developed in a mesothermal environment at considerable depth (eg ~10 km for Macraes), others appear to have formed at very shallow depth (eg <1 km for Nenthorn) (Craw and Norris, 1988). 4. The timing of the mineralisation is generally poorly constrained but postdates the main Rangitata schist metamorphism. It probably initiated during early Cretaceous exhumation and unroofing of the schist belt (140 - 120 Ma?) and may have continued well into the Tertiary (Craw, 1989). Estimates for the relative ages of the different lodes are largely speculative but, based on pressure estimates from fluid inclusion studies, Macraes likely represents the deepest and oldest lode system while Nenthorn (just 12 km to the southwest) is perhaps the shallowest and youngest (Craw and Norris, 1988).

PIP is regularly engaged in businesses where Greenfield Capital Projects are under- delivering on the expected business case. In most of these projects, we can identify that rigorous review has been carried out on the design and financial cost elements and substantial reporting is maintained to Boards on progress versus plan of project completion and cost. However, in all sites of this nature that we have worked at, the planning, design and execution of the operational elements or æwiringÆ of the organisation have fallen short and resulted in significant extra cost or opportunity cost (lost tonnage or quality) during start-up. When compared to the amount of planning and resources that have been poured into the capital side, the ledger on the æwiringÆ side is typically fairly sparse. This presentation outlines the importance of running a disciplined, rigorous process to prepare the human and wiring side of a start-up to ensure rapid start-ups and put the site on the pathway to high performance. It gives an outline of the rigorous process PIP has used with projects to ensure excellent start-ups.

The island of Java lies within the Sunda-Banda magmatic arc, which is characterised by multiple phases of volcanic activity and extensive compressional deformation. Along this zone, significant gold and copper mineralisation occurs, including some of the world’s largest deposits. In West Java, epithermal gold mineralisation is typically located in a series of extensional and strike-slip faults that cut Miocene to Pliocene volcanic rocks. These are all low-sulfidation, epithermal, vein-stockwork-style deposits developed in Miocene to Pliocene calc-alkaline volcanic rocks, which have been intruded by shallow-level plutons.This paper discusses an example of epithermal mineralisation at Mt Subang, West Java. Gold mineralisation was originally identified from stream sediment, panned concentrate and rock geochemistry sampling in the early 1990s. Geophysical surveys (magnetics and induced polarisation resistivity/chargeability), trenching, pitting and diamond hole drilling has subsequently revealed silicified-quartz vein epithermal gold mineralisation hosted within fault structures. It is clear that these structures acted as hydrothermal fluid pathways leading to the development of mineralised offshoots along north–south extensional and en-echelon arrays of north-east–south-west and transtensional faults. A number of vertical offshoots also occur in flexures and fault jogs. Post-mineral faulting has subsequently dissected and offset a number of the offshoots. Therefore, a detailed knowledge of structure and fault kinematics and displacement magnitudes is required in order to understand the geometry and continuity of mineralisation across major structures and maximise the resource potential. New detailed mapping, micropalaeont- ology and isotopic dating have been successful in revising the stratigraphy of Woodlark Island. All Middle to Late Miocene intrusives and volcanic rocks have been assigned to the Okiduse Volcanics. In addition, the results demonstrate that the Tabukui beds and Wonai Hill beds (N9, late Early Miocene to earliest Middle Miocene) are a single unit. Similarly, the Nasai and Suloga Limestones are confirmed as a single stratigraphic unit as they yield similar foraminiferal ages (upper Te, Early Miocene), and both occur in the same stratigraphic position unconformably overlying basement Loluai Volcanics. Radiocarbon dating suggests a latest Pleistocene age for the upper Kiriwina Formation. Extensive Quaternary cover and low relief prevents detailed structural airphoto interpretation. In general, the structure is simple with all units on Woodlark dipping to the northwest a_4 exhibiting prominent local block faulting.

Megascopic and microscopic studies of cleats and mining induced cleavage in Ihe first workings at Leichhardt Colliery reveal the presence of four distinct fracture sets. Microscopic studies confirm underground observations of the fracture sets.The most likely order of formation of the fractures is (i) "butt" cleats (ii) facc cleats (iii) shallow dipping faults (iv) mining induced cleavage. Three fracture sets apparently formed by tensiIe failure. Microscopy shows that the mining induced cleavage surfaces have preferred starting or lerminating points at the extremity of a "butt" cleat and a vitrite-dull coal band boundary. It is postulated that the induced cleavage begins at 'butt' cleats which behave as Griffith flaws under high compression around Leichhardt Colliery faces. Instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas are associated with only those workings which are affected by mining induced cleavage and occur at or adjacent to working faces.

The uptake of gold by activated carbon from acid chloride solutions involves the reduction of gold(IIl) to metallic gold. Deposition occurs only on the surface of the carbon at localized active sites at first, and subsequently at less active areas. The rate of uptake depends on the surface area of activated carbon, which confirms results from a recently published study (de Siegel and Soto, 1984). Increased rates of uptake were observed at higher temperatures and lower chloride concentrations due to the decreased stability of AuCI4-, the major gold(IIl) species present. Recoveries of gold approached 100 per cent for a contact time of 60 minutes at 20°C in a well stirred solution initially 5 ppm in gold(III) and containing 0.5 per cent w/v coconut-shell carbon. The presence of 0.25 Mnitric acid or 100 ppm iron(IIl) had no detectable effect on either rate or efficiency of gold uptake.

In a previous paper of this series (1) ,t it was shown that during the creep of single crystals of lead, deformation proceeded to some extent by means of slip on the octahedral plane. This was demonstrated by the formation of slip lines on the surface of the specimens. At first, a few broad bands appeared after a small amount of extension had taken place; then, as extension proceeded, more and finer lines made their appearance until the whole of the specimen surface was covered.The present paper deals with the process of deformation of the creep specimens as revealed by X-ray examination..By the use of this method, the changes taking place in the crystal structure can be observed.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe method of preparation of the specimens, their size and the purity of the lead employed have been reported elsewhere (1). At frequent intervals, the specimens were dismantled from the test rack and X-ray back reflection photographs were taken. The specimens were so marked and set up on the X-ray machine that the same spot on the specimen surface was always examined.Copper radiation was employed, the tube voltage and current being 45 kV. and 25 m.a. respectively and the exposure time 2 hrs. The slit diameter was 1 mm.

Ore-bearing intrusions in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) were examined from nine mines: Boshekul, Nurkazgan, Kounrad, Borly, Aktogai, Koksai, Baogutu, Tuwu and Erdenet. The intrusions are diorite, granodiorite and tonalite with SiO2 contents ranging from 58 to 75 wt per cent, and show mildly fractionated rare earth elements (REE) ([LREE]N/[HREE]N = 2.7–4.7) – light REE and heavy REE – and varying Eu anomalies ([Eu]/[Eu]* = 0.58–1.4). The ratios of Sr/Y vary from 7.9 to 115 and the contents of Y from 4.6 to 23.9 ppm. The parental magmas of the intrusions are intrinsically oxidised. Zircon grains in the ore-bearing rocks from large- and intermediate-sized porphyry Cu deposits show high Ce4+/Ce3+ ratios characterised by 65–422 at Boshekul (>4.1 Mt Cu), 76–480 at Kounrad (>4.8 Mt Cu), 90–280 at Aktogai (>12 Mt Cu), 80–250 at Erdenet (>11 Mt Cu) 74–370 at Nurkazgan (>3.9 Mt Cu), 100–210 at Koksai (>1.6 Mt Cu), and 71–340 at Tuwu (~2.0 Mt Cu). In two small deposits, the ore-bearing rocks display low values of Ce4+/Ce3+; Borly (0.6 Mt Cu) ranging from 28 to 158, and Baogutu (0.6 Mt Cu) from 29 to 113. The Ce4+/Ce3+ ratio of 120 distinguishes large intermediate-size deposits from small-size deposits. The central Taupo Volcanic Zone is a region of intense Quaternary silicic volcanism accompanying rapid crustal extension. Modem central TVZ is the most frequently active and productive silicic volcanic system on Earth, erupting rhyolite at c.0.28 m3 s-1. The rhyolites show no major compositional changes with time, but the total extent of magma chamber zonation has changed with the advent of rifting and crustal extension at c.0.7 Ma. At least 34 caldera-forming ignimbrite eruptions have formed a complex sequence of relatively short-lived, nested and/or overlapping volcanic centres in central TVZ. Taupo contrasts with other large silicic magmatic systems in the exceptionally high frequency, but small size, of caldera forming eruptions. This contrast reflects the thin, rifted nature of the TVZ crust that precludes the development of long term magmatic cycles at Taupo. Within central TVZ, non-rhyolitic compositions have been erupted apparently irregularly in time and space; in particular there is no evidence for a geographic separation of basalts from andesites. TVZ is a rifted arc, but its segmented nature, high thermal flux and voluminous rhyolitic volcanism make it unique on Earth.

Project management is not a task to be undertaken lightly. Mining projects generally present even more challenges due to ChinaÆs remoteness and complexity. Having experiences in project management in the West is certainly an asset, but China can present the uninitiated with any number of headaches. To undertake a project there can have many problems that are unique to China. For the last 15 years, China has seen an increasing number of foreign capital investment projects in the mining industry. Practices involved in mining project development have experienced/are experiencing an evolution. Since 1996, Sino Gold Mining Ltd has delivered three mines in China, ie Jianchaling Gold Mine, Jinfeng Gold Mine and White Mountain Gold Mine. Through the work, Sino Gold has established a solid knowledge base and a capable and skilful workforce in effectively undertaking mining projects in China. This paper is concerned with the experiences accumulated so far by Sino Gold in project management in China. An overall review is conducted regarding the reform of the mining project development in China. Opportunities and challenges are highlighted within the political, economic and culture context. Brief summaries of the development of the three gold mines are presented.

Renison Bell is on the Emu Bay Railway, midway between Zeehan and Rosebery on the west coast of Tasmania. The tin deposits in this area have been described by G. A. WaIler (1902), L. K. Ward (1909), H. Hermani (1914), and Hartwell Conder (1918), for the Tasmanian Geological Survey. The ore-bodies occur in the slates, grits, altered lava flows and tufts of the Dundas Series, and consist of fine-grained cassiterite disseminated through massive sulphides (chiefly pyrrhotite or pyrite), or through bodies of quartz and sulphides. Some of these bodies show a N.W.-S.E. strike, parallel to the strike of the tin belt, but others strike N.E.-S;W. or E.-W.The ore-bodies are of two types: (1) steeply dipping fissure veins,' spoken of locally as "feeders," and (2) flatter-lying bodies more or less conformable with the bedding planes of the slates (bedded veins), spoken of locally as "floors."The feeders range from 5-12 ft. in width, with occasional bulges as great as 4q ft. Their lengths vary from 100 ft. to several hundred yards, and they are known to continue to Clmsiderable depths. 'They dip steeply, generally at angles of 45° to 60° to the east or south.The floors, where they occur, 'are directly connected with the feeders, and are sheet-iike bodies of sulphide ore. The composite ore-bodies thus have the shape of an inverted L, or a T, according to whether 'the floor extends out from one side or both sides of the feeder. Most of the floors extend from the hanging-wall side of the feeder. Where erosion has removed the connection, they appear as separate bodies.The feeders as a rule carry more quartz and arsenopyrite than the floors, and are richer in tin. In addition, the cassiterite tends to be coarser grained in the feeders than in the floors. The floors, on the other hand, carry a greater proportion of -sulphides, chiefly pyrrhotite, and the grade of ore and grain size of the cas,siterite tend to decrease as the floor is followed down the dip away from the feeder, so that the outer and lower extremities of the floors may be too low-grade to work economically. The average grade of the ore worked at present is 0·9,0/0 tin. The slates forming the roofs of the floors are commonly much contorted and silicified,' so that they form hard rocks in which the contortion and shattering of the original slates are well preserved. Joints extending upwards, more or less at right angles to the roof of the floor, are occasionally filled with finely crystalline quartz, similar to that in the orebodies, and are often rich in tin, so much so that the slate as a whole may average 0·4% tin.Some carbonate gangue is present in all of the ore-bodies, commonly on the footwall side, and, in places it becomes an important constituent...

This paper contains an account of some creep tests on electrolytic lead and some of its alloys. The stresses used in determining creep were 500, 350, and 200 lb. per sq.' in. The alloys contained silver, bismuth, tellurium, antimony and zinc respectively. All were castin vacuo, and tested "as rolled." Tests were done also on electrolytic lead which had been cast in air.The electrolytic lead contained 0.0005% total impurities.The preparation and vacuum casting of this lead have been described in a previous paper in this series. The preparation of the alloys, and the air casting of the electrolytic lead, are described in the next section.EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE.Every effort was made to keep the vacuum-cast specimens from contact with the atmosphere throughout their history.The ingots were stored eIther in a vacuum desiccator or immersed in heavy oil. The creep specimens were coated with vaseline except during rolling, etching and photography, which involved exposure to the atmosphere for about 45 minutes all told.It is not claimed that vaseline is a perfect shield against the intrusion of atmospheric gases. Possibly during the months that some tests were in progress the gases diffused through the vaseline and gained a limited access to the lead.Nevertheless, the use of vaseline gave protection that brought the tests nearer the ideal at which the author aimed, *Research Fellow, Dept. of Metallurgy, University of Melbourne.

Gold Fields Australia is constructing two major ventilation shafts at the Wallaby gold mine in Western Australia. The new ventilation shafts are required to facilitate the long term ventilation strategy for the mine, thereby allowing continued extraction of ore beyond 1000 m below the surface. The construction work has involved all of the challenges that shaft construction can throw up, including challenging geotechnical conditions, unexpected high water inflows and major circulation loss during pilot hole drilling for raise boring. An extensive geotechnical and hydrological investigation program was undertaken prior to awarding the shaft construction contracts. While most of the risks were identified, several proved to be much more challenging than expected. The shaft construction methods included conventional sinking into the fresh rock profile in each shaft, followed by raise bore pilot hole drilling and reaming. A headframe was constructed for the first shaft, which was sunk to 92 m with a stage suspended in the shaft to facilitate the concrete lining and provide rope guides for the kibble winding. Drawing from experience when sinking the first shaft, additional ground pre-conditioning was implemented for the second shaft, which was pre-supported with continuous piles to 28 m followed by sinking to 50 m using a crane instead of winders and a headframe. Following the conventional sinking through the weathered zone in each shaft, the shafts were completed using a raise bore. The first shaft utilised a riser pipe and rotary vertical drilling system (RVDS) with the second shaft having utilised a dual rotary rig for pilot hole drilling. Hydraulic fracturing to precondition the orebody to enhance rock mass cavability is gaining acceptance in underground cave mining applications. Assisting cavability is becoming important as an increasing number of cave mines are being implemented in hard, deep and competent rock masses where clamping stresses are higher and cave column heights may be in excess of 1000 m. Propagating large caves to surface in such conditions can be challenging as risks such as slowed propagation and air gaps can develop during the process.Underground-based hydraulic fracturing is routinely used at Cadia East as a means of preconditioning the orebody to assist in cave propagation, fragmentation and seismicity reduction. This paper presents a summary of a surface-based hydraulic fracture program that was successfully implemented to assist in the propagation of the Cadia East Panel Cave 1 (CE-PC1) cave to surface through competent overlying rock masses. In this case study, the propagation of the CE-PC1 cave slowed as the cave grew past 750 m in height, initiating a Trigger Action Response Plan regarding the cave propagation rate. Surface-based hydraulic fracturing was subsequently used to stimulate the cave to propagate through the final 450 m to surface. Tumbling mills and some theoretical and practical aspects of milling are discussed. Attention is directed towards the difficulty of relating the dynamical analyses of the motions of particles within mills to the existing treatments of breakage processes. This synthesis may be advanced by a study of milling that utilizes the matrix analysis of breakage processes. Application of the matrix analysis to results obtained on (i) grinding in open-circuit a zinc ore in a conical pebble mill and in a modified conical mill, (ii) "grinding of cement clinker in a compound mill, and (iii) to some drop-weight grindability tests is discussed. It is shown that the 'IT-breakage model adequately describes the breakage processes of each of the tests. (The proportion broken in each breakage cycle is given by 'IT and is independent of particle size.)The size distributions of the products are accurately predicted in the cases considered. Matrix analyses of the breakage of coals, various ores and a cement clinker have been made. Appendices give an elementary account of the matrix methods and give the equations fully describing reverse order closed circuit operations. The matrix analyses of breakage processes and the survey are used to examine briefly closed circuit grinding.INTRODUCTIONTumbling mills are slow-speed crushing and grinding machines which have been developed from some fairly simple types into many widely differing forms.
