The geology and mineral deposits of the West Pilbara Goldfield are described and comparison is made with the Pilbara Goldfield,, In the West Pilbai'a Goldfield two adjacent environments are represented by a predominantly clastic succession and a predominantly volcanic succession. These two successions are lateral equivalents and lithologically they are similar to the classical successions at Warrdiwdbna and Mosquito Creek. How- ever, no evidence of a significant erosional break has been found. It is suggested that the Archaean rocks of: the Pilbara Block represent a single geosynclinal cycle, which culminated in orogenesis, within which-local disconformities have been developed in various places: and that the sub-Mosquito; Creek unconformity at Eastern Creek may be the most widespread of these disconformities, Widespread evidence of'preconsolidation movement, aid the intrusion of igneous rock into. unconsolidated sediment, suggest that tectonism and igneous activity began at a very early stage, This was localised along lines of fracture in an unidentified basement.,.Moveme.nt was primarily vertical and persisted into the older Proterozoic, The sediments were enriched in metal by vulcanicity, chemical sedimentation, and possibly detrit`1' contribution. Diagenesis and metamorphism caused the remobòliyation of the metallic constituents of igneous and sedimentary, rocks which were then localised-in loci of dislocation-formed both before and after consolidation.,.. . . , . .

Cable bolts have been used extensively in the development of the footwall of the Mt Whaleback Mine as a part of the ground improvement program since 1986. High tensile seven wire stress relieved steel strand similar to that used in pre-stressed concrete and grouted in place with sulphate resistant cement have been employed for rock-mass reinforcement.Most of the footwall is developed in Mt McRae Shale which contains a 20 m thick pyritic shale layer 14 m below the ore/waste contact. Due to extensive folding of the footwall rocks, the pyritic shale layer regularly occurs on, or close to the pit slope. Rain water run-off seeping through pyritic shale becomes acidic to the extent where its pH value can be as low as 1.5.

Since the mid-1970s there has been increasing attention in the South Pacific area to the problems of disaster planning and management at various levels, mainly from regional through national to provincial levels. This concern has been expressed in a variety of ways. International aid donors have made their views known in commentaries or reports. Seminar discussions have been organised at the regional level (such as at Suva, 1976; Suva, 1979; Tonga, 1982 and Suva, 1983). In-country training workshops or meetings have been organised (such as the "Disaster Preparedness Workshops for Non-governmental Organisations" in Pacific countries, jointly run by the Australian Red Cross and the Australian Overseas Disaster Response Organisation and supported by AIDAB, in Vanuatu, 1985; Solomon Islands, 1985; Western Samoa, 1986; Fiji, 1987; Tonga, 1987; Lae and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, 1988) or held outside the area (ACDC at Macedon, 1981). Training and/or research institutions have been established such as the East-West Center, Honolulu, and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, Bangkok (more Asia oriented). As part of the East-West Center Pacific Islands Development Program's Disaster Preparedness Project, a detailed manual of disaster preparedness and response procedures and guidelines has been published (Carter, 1984).Table 1 and figure 1 show that the area with which this discussion deals is a highly fragmented island region, comprising many small, some minute, nations, both in land area and population. The social structure is predominantly rural, with the capital city often making up a small part of the total population and, in absolute terms, little more than a small town. Outside the administrative and governmental activities concentrated in the capitals, in most cases the indigenous inhabitants depend on subsistence agriculture or on usually a monocultural concentration on a cash crop, most frequently coconuts.

During the past five years there has been a transformation in the operating costs which apply to narrow vein mining. Mechanised methods including sublevel uphole retreat and narrow vein cut and fill are now proven. Other methods, such as vein mining by horizontal drilling from a raise platform are currently being tried in Australia.The important factors which affect the cost and appropriateness of each method include: ore continuity, the planarity of the wall contacts, relative hardness of ore and wall rocks and the dip bf the deposit.Drawing on current operating costs from a number of mines and on recent feasibility studies, a methodology for estimating the costs of narrow vein mining is presented. These costs are then placed in their economic context with regard to ore grade and mining rate.

This paper describes the application of a three-dimensional finite element modelling tool to help assess the stability of a highwall at a Central Queensland mine following the weakening of its base due to highwall mining. With traditional stability assessment techniques, likely failure modes are identified on the basis of previous experience and structural, sedimentological and geomechanical data and a mechanistic analysis of these individual modes is performed. The value of the full three-dimensional model over these traditional techniques is that it provides a coherent approach to assessing highwall stability without the necessity of initially deciding upon the dominant failure mechanism and gives a useful adjunct to the traditional tools. The three-dimensional model assumes the rock mass is made of elasto-plastic blocks, incorporating possible planes of weakness, separated by near horizontal joints. The model includes the relaxation of stresses due to the excavation of the highwall and incorporates estimates of blast damage near the highwall surface

Often dewatering of coal tailings is inhibited by the presence of clays, making it difficult to obtain a high concentration, handleable coal tailings. The net result can be a low concentration, chocolate mousse-like tailings which poses significant sedimentation problems in a tailings dam and represents a significant environmental problem. This paper examines the coal tailings from a Hunter Valley colliery where the tailings properties are influenced significantly by the presence of montmorillonite clay. The influence of the calcium ion on the rheology and sedimentation/compression behaviour of coal tailings . containing montmorillonite already dispersed in water was investigated and revealed that very little improvement in the properties is achieved through the coagulation. The preliminary investigations also indicated that the properties of the tailings were dominated by the presence of the montmorillonite clay. Thus investigations were carried out on the clay alone in water. Investigations into the effect of dispersing samples of the clay alone in water and then coagulating with calcium compared with dispersing the clay directly into calcium ion solutions at the same calcium concentration showed huge improvements in the rheology, compressibility, sedimentation rates and sediment solids concentrations for the second dispersion method, which can be called controlled dispersion. The sediment volume fraction solids improved by more than a factor of two by controlling the dispersion of the clay. The reason for the improved properties lies in the suppression of the initial swelling of the clay, which is initially in the sodium form, thus maintaining the parallel orientation of the platelets that is present before wetting. While swelling is being suppressed, ion exchange occurs with the calcium which results in permanent swelling suppression. In the uncontrolled dispersion case where swelling is uninhibited, the clay is allowed to break up and despite the powerful coagulating nature of the calcium ion, the random orientation of the high aspect ratio clay platelets inhibits effective coagulation. Results indicate that the initial electrolyte concentration of the washwater in a coal washery is the critical factor controlling the dewaterability of clay tailings and the handleability of the dewatered product rather than the actual act of coagulating with the calcium ion. The results presented are of clear practical significance and indicate how coal tailings problems where clay dominates the rheology can be improved considerably by knowledge of the surface chemistry.

The properties of bearing metals are of considerable interest to mine engineers, since continuous running of mine and mill machinery is of vital importance. Of the several available types of bearing metal, the low melting point lead or tin base alloys are most generally used in mining plant because of the ease of replacement and the possibility of remelting scrap metal from old bearings. The most valuable property of these "white metals," however, is the plasticity which gives a self-aligning character to the bearings, enablingthem to adjust themselves to inequalities which may exist at the time of fitting, or which may develop during running. The object of the present paper is to explain in general terms the physical structures of white bearing metals, and to point out that constitution rather than composition determines the physical properties of these alloys. The same, indeed, is true of most engineering alloys. In steels, for example, a change in the structure may affect the properties to a far greater extent than a change of chemical composition.Structural changes in steels are produced chiefly by heat treatment. The effect of stresses and acoustic emissions on the gas permeability of coal was investigated in the field and the laboratory in order to find an estimative method of the practicability of gas drainage. In the field, acoustic emissions and gas emissions during gas drainage drilling were monitored tentatively at some coal mines in Japan and China.In the laboratory, acoustic emissions from coal specimens in addition to gas permeability were measured during the triaxial compression loading in order to interpret the results monitored in the field. Besides, the opening of gas permeation channels in coal was considered on the basis of the experimental results.

As mining and extraction processes improve and lower grade ores become economic, mining for most ores have extended to depths beneath the zone of weathering oxidation created over geological history. These deeper openings expose sulphidic formations and reduced mineral species as either primary ore or simply as accessory or gangue minerals in the country rock. This is not new, underground mining for primary base metal and gold have long been familiar with these problems, as have coal and uranium miners. The change is simply that the number of mines exposing sulphidic waste rocks, tailings to the atmosphere and/or leaving behind dewatered sulphidic rock surrounding the mine void has increased the number of sites from where acid mine drainage (AMD) may emanate with consequential problems for the hydrological environment including downstream catchments (Miller et al, 1996). The principles of ecologically sustainable development (Brundtland, 1987) have been more or less ratified by all the developed nations of the world and this has led, amongst other things, to an expansion unprecedented in the research and documentation of means for achieving long-term environmentally acceptable stabilisation of solid wastes of all sorts. These have revealed that AMD problems can be minimised and even reversed in many cases by the integration or co-disposal of biodegradable organic wastes with oxidising sulphidic wastes (Elliott et al, 1996). This paper considers how this might be achieved at mine sites in Australia and the results encountered at some relevant sites.

Chrysotile asbestos is a valuable resource. Used as a reinforcement in asbestos cement, products are obtained which are cheap, are not attacked by vermin, do not rot or support growth of fungi and are unaffected by water or humid conditions. Such products are of great value in the developing countries where inexpensive and durable building materials and pressure pipe are very important to development, housing and water supplies. Concern over the adverse effects of inhaling asbestos has led to the introduction of increasingly stringent controls world wide on the quantities of airborne asbestos per- missible in the occupational situation. Wet processing has the potential for virtually eliminating the environmental concerns with asbestos dust both in fibre production and in the materials handling section of the manufac- ture of asbestos cement products. In addition, high efficiencies associated with wet process- ing mean that better yields are obtained and that the tailings which are dumped have a lower residual asbestos content. Since early 1977, ICI Australia and Woodsreef Mines have been engaged in a programme of research to develop and evaluate a wet mill- ingprocess to produce, from ore and existing tailings, high grade fibre suitable for use in asbestos cement products. The process has been developed through microscopic studies, labora- tory bench scale experiments, work in a small scale semi-continuous plant and product evalua- tion on experimental size Hatschek asbestos cement machines. A prototype mill with a normal feed rate of 1z tonnes per hour and capable of producing pipe grade asbestos from Woodsreef ore has been constructed and was operational from January, 1982 to July, 1983. A range of asbestos cement products have been made successfully on full scale Hatschek machines using fibre from ore and tailings milled in the prototype mill. Economic evaluations indicate that a wet process mill would be cheaper to build, operate and maintain than an equivalent dry process plant. A commercial plant has been designed 1. THE plant is one of the usual type of Mond plants, and contains no new features worthy of comment. A brief description of the process, however, with a few remarks on the working of the plant, may prove of interest.Producer gas is made by passing a mixture of air and steam through incandescent carbon contained in a furnace called a producer, which, in the Mond type, is a cylindrical casing of steel plate, lined with firebrick, and fitted at the lower end with sloping fire-bars'. Coal crushed to an even size (about 2-in. gauge) is elevated to bunkers over the producers, from which it is fed into a measuring hopper on each producer.The hopper is a cast-iron cylinder fitted with a swing cover at the top and a bell valve at the bottom, worked by a lever and balance weight. When a charge of coal is run from the bunker into the hopper, the cover is closed, and the bell valve is lowered, allowing the coal contents to drop into the producer. Thus no gas can escape from, or air be admitted to, the producer during the process of charging. The hopper discharges its coal through a steel pipe-shaped container called the bell, which projects about 9 in. through the roof of the producer. The function of the bell is to spread the coal evenly over the fire, and supply coal to any portion of the fire as it settles.

The Tennant Creek goldfield is one of the largest gold producing districts in Australia, and major deposits, including Gecko, Juno, Orlando, Peko, Warrego, Nobles Nob, Golden Forty, Argo, TC 8 and White Devil have produced more than four million ounces of gold over the past two decades. Gold-copper-bismuth mineralisation at Tennant Creek occurs in lenticular, ellipsoidal or pipe-like bodies of magnetite-hematite ironstones which are hosted in turbiditic sedimentary rocks of Proterozoic age (Large, 1975; Wedekind, Large and Williams, 1989; Le Messurier, Williams and Blake, 1990; Morrison, Donnellan and Hussey, 1992).

QueenslandÆs new safety legislation for metalliferous and coal mining (Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 and Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999, together with the Regulations) came into effect on 16 March 2001. The legislation places clear obligations on mine owners, operators and workers to have a safe place of work and to manage risks to safety and health. It also places obligations on contractors, designers and providers of services. The legislation is non-prescriptive in that it states what outcomes must be achieved and not what must be done. The key issue is that the risk of injury to people must be at an acceptable level. The legislation creates a Mines Inspectorate with powers of inspection and audit of mines, their safety management systems and the management of risks. Auditing of the risk management process is carried out against standard risk management techniques and directives for corrective action may be issued when audits reveal non-compliance or unacceptable levels of risk.

The biohydrometallurgy of gold is based on different processes which could be grouped into four main groups (Attia, Litchfield and Vaaler, 1985; Karavaiko et al, 1988; Groudev, 1990): 1. bacterial oxidation of gold-bearing sulphide minerals by chemolithotrophic bacteria to facilitate the subsequent chemical extraction of gold; 2. solubilisation of gold from oxide ores by means of heterotrophic bacteria; 3. recovery of gold from solutions by biosorption; and 4. microbial modifications of the surface of gold-bearing sulphide minerals to improve the subsequent gold concentration by physical dressing methods (eg flotation, oil agglomeration).

Two versions of a radiometric-type caliper for measuring borehole diameter are described. One, based on the bow-spring principle, is suitable for percussion (exploration) drill holes. The other, which utilizes hemispherical wall contactors actuated by springs, is suitable for blast holes. Both utilize low-power radioactive sources and employ a scintillation detector to measure the "inverse-square law" response of the device to changes in borehole radius. The performance of the device is examined and examples of its use are illustrated.

Economic mathematical methods have been developed and applied in the design, planning, development and managing stages in the mining industry. Economic and technological efficiency is achieved with the aid of a large range of probability models, which are used to enable decisions to be made progressively during the different stages. The entire operation is considered as a total system made up of sub- systems and the models representing these are consecutively interrelated with each other. Algorithms and programmes representing the economic mathematical models for all the stages involved were tested and were found to be applicable to the various important mines in the Donetsk basin. Currently, these models are accepted and widely used.
