The Zinifex Century Mine employs a large number of Detritor mills for fine and ultra-fine grinding to liberate silica and sphalerite at 80 per cent passing 7.5 microns before final zinc flotation. A joint project between CSIRO Minerals and the Zinifex Century Mine was carried out to evaluate the Detritor mill performance. Plant surveys were conducted around the Detritors in conjunction with laboratory tests. The survey data showed that the Detritors in the ultra-fine milling circuit performed well. They reduced a feed F80 sizing of 46 microns to a product P80 sizing of 7.5 microns at a gross energy consumption of 37.2 kWh/t. Scale-up of ultra-fine milling Detritors was studied using a 0.55 kW laboratory batch unit and a 355 kW full-scale Detritor by processing Century zinc concentrate with 1 mm sand media. The results indicated that the 0.55 kW laboratory mill underestimated the energy consumption of the full-scale Detritor by about 20 per cent for a product P80 of seven microns. The performances of a horizontal IsaMill and a vertical Detritor were compared as ultra-fine milling devices for processing Century zinc concentrate. The experimental data demonstrated that, when using the same grinding media, the energy efficiency of the two mills is similar despite the difference in mill designs. The Detritors used for regrind duty at the Century Mine performed poorly when processing feed at 80 per cent passing 88 micron. The energy consumption was high and the product size distribution was broad with particles above 100 microns in the feed unbroken and particles below ten microns overground. A coarser ceramic media of 3 mm was therefore tested in a laboratory Detritor to process the regrind Detritor feed as an alternative to the 1 mm Colorado sand used at the Century Mine. The ceramic media reduced the energy consumption significantly and produced a narrower product size distribution, which is more desirable for the downstream flotation process.

Cu-Ag-Au mineralisation at Kluwih prospect in Eastern Java, Indonesia is related to a high-sulfidation hydrothermal system within a volcanic dome (2.35 × 1.7 km diameter). The mineralisation occurs mainly in steeply dipping, structurally-controlled quartz-enargite-pyrite veins (several centimetres to 2 m wide) and is hosted mainly in porphyritic dacite, volcaniclastic rocks and volcanic breccia of the dome and in an underlying andesite that yielded a zircon U-Pb age of 11.5 Ma.Short wave infrared spectrometer analyses were carried out for alteration mapping at Kluwih. There are two main stages of alteration produced by the hydrothermal activity. The alteration mineral assemblages indicate an advanced argillic alteration. The Cu mineralisation occurred in the form of enargite and subordinate chalcopyrite with an intergrown texture in the early stage. These mineralised veins are characterised by narrow pyrophyllite ± diaspore and dickite selvages (metres wide) and a peripheral K-muscovite envelope (sericitic alteration) up to 100 m wide. The K-muscovite envelope is zoned outward to Na-muscovite or Na-illite. Late-stage kaolinite and smectite alteration overprints the porphyritic dacite and may obscure the nature of early mica-clay alteration. The spatial distribution of different alteration assemblages suggests that the temperature of hydrothermal fluid increases with depth.Both the high-sulfidation mineralisation and advanced argillic alteration are suggested to be related to magmatic-hydrothermal fluids, which are likely to originate from an undiscovered deeper porphyry Cu-Au system below the porphyritic dacite. Based on alteration mapping results and comparisons to similar deposits, the porphyry intrusion could be up to 500 m below the volcanic dome. Further geochemical and mineralogical studies may help to target the potential underlying porphyry system.CITATION:Chan, J S-L, 2015. Underground mines often rely on ore pass systems to ensure the transport of ore and waste. Consequently, it is important to ensure the smooth operation of such systems. Ore pass degradation that may require rehabilitation results in production delays and high operational costs. The occurrence of hang-ups within an ore pass also leads to disruption of ore production. There are important safety concerns when worker intervention is necessary to re-establish material flow in the ore pass. In order to facilitate the design of ore pass systems, mining operations often rely on past experience, or semi empirical guidelines. This paper describes recent efforts to establish a comprehensive database on current practices; encountered operational problems and solutions in ore pass design in Quebec underground mines.

Everyone present today is especially aware of the need for minerals in this society of ours. The words 'especially aware' were deliberately chosen because this is a meeting of the NZ Branch of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy not a dilettante group such as some of our critics. Members of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy knew that our great farming industry, our shelter, our transport and our energy supply, are largely dependent on a flow of minerals into this country despite the presence of large coal and natural gas reserves. Flow in was said because New Zealand imports most of its mineral requirements with all the consequential strategic and economic disadvantages. If the above statements are accepted by this gathering it would be a premise fairly stated that New Zealand has a great need to discover and develop minerals.

The Fosterville Goldfield has a modest past production (0.3 Moz), but is now emerging as a significant goldfield (2.6 Moz resources, including 1.1 Moz reserves) with implications for exploration within the orogenic gold provinces of the Lachlan Fold Belt in Australia and the Buller Terrane on the West Coast of New Zealand. Fosterville is located 20 km east of the 22 Moz Bendigo Goldfield and is geologically similar to other Victorian goldfields, however the nature of the gold mineralisation differs significantly. Unlike other Victorian goldfields there is no primary free gold at Fosterville. The gold occurs in as sub-SEM resolution particles, in fine grained arsenopyrite and pyrite crystals disseminated through the wall rocks in fault controlled quartz-carbonate vein stockworks. The Fosterville Goldfield comprises several subparallel fault systems striking 340¦ over an exposed strike length of 28 km. The Fosterville Fault system comprises the west dipping (~75¦), reverse Fosterville Fault and several less steeply west dipping splay faults formed in the footwall. The splay faults extend through east dipping beds from the Fosterville Fault across a syncline hinge into stratigraphically controlled positions on the west dipping limb of the syncline. The predominant control on gold mineralisation is the intersection of the bedding on the east dipping limb of the syncline and faulting which, is in turn controlled by the orientation of bedding in the west dipping limb of the syncline. The mineralised shoots are thus subparallel to the plunge of the syncline and show a plunge reversal about a culmination in the footwall syncline. This provides a very powerful exploration tool with bedding û cleavage intersection lineations measured in outcrop and oriented core indicating the plunge of mineralisation. Mineralisation is also, albeit less commonly, controlled by local variations in strike and dip of the host fault and at metre scale by host lithology. As the faults and mineralisation are stratigraphically controlled, detailed stratigraphic interpretations are essential to provide control on structural interpretations for resource modelling. Compared to other Victorian goldfields, the Fosterville Goldfield formed later (385 Ma to 360 Ma cf 440 Ma), at lower temperatures and at shallower depths (fluid inclusion studies of Au associated veins suggest vein formation at ~270¦C (range 140¦C to 385¦C) and at depths of 2.6 - 5.7 km).

In blasting large tonnages of ore or material, the economy of the operation 'depends mainly on the mine manager's judgment in placing the holes to the best possible advantage and in determining the most effective size of hole to suit the conditions and requirements.The placing of holes is often looked upon as a problem involving so many uncertain factors that the application of simple mathematics is impossible. The uncertain factors arise when dealing with strata of different character, in hardness toughness and resistance to shearing.A study of the practice at many mines where all types of strata from hard ore to relatively soft overburden, and even coal, is being mined, suggests that the problem is not as complex as generally believed. There is, without doubt, some uniformity in the amount of burden given to holes of equivalent dimensions, regardless of the material being mined. The reason is simple. With too great a burden hard rock will not break out and soft rock will "bull". The nature of the strata is taken care of by the strength, quantity and distribution of the explosive charge and, to some extent, the spacing of the holes.It is because burdens are uniform in all classes of strata met with in mining, that a formula can be used to design blast hole layouts.The formula introduced in this paper is empirical as it is based on prevailing practice. It has been tested and proved remarkably accurate against every example available to the writer. Many thousands of blast holes, at many different mines, are represented by the examples given in the attached tables; to give further examples would only mean, unnecessary repetition. Iron formation-hosted iron ore deposits account for the majority of current world iron ore production and consist of three classes: unenriched primary iron formation with typically 25 to 45 wt per cent Fe; martite-goethite ore formed by supergene processes, with abundant hydrous iron oxides containing 60 to 63 wt per cent Fe; and high-grade hematite ores thought to be of hypogene or metamorphic origin overprinted by subsequent supergene enrichment with 60 to 68 wt per cent Fe.Individual iron ore deposits range from a few millions of tonnes to over two billion tonnes at >64 wt per cent Fe, although most are within the range of 200 to 500 Mt. In the Hamersley Province of Western Australia, martite-goethite ores are largely developed in the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, although high (>0.08 per cent P) phosphorous mineralisation is also well developed in the stratigraphically higher Brockman Iron Formation. Whilst the vast majority of high-grade microplaty hematite ore is best developed in the Brockman Iron Formation, this paper provides the first textural evidence of locally significant microplaty hematite mineralisation in the Nammuldi Member of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, in the Chichester Ranges at the Christmas Creek, Cloud Break and Mount Nicholas prospects. Petrographic studies have identified a high-grade Fe texture composed of nanometre scale plates of hematite in mineralised sections of primary microplaty hematite deposits in the Pilbara and elsewhere, well below the normal depth of weathering or dehydration. The population of nanometre to micrometre scale hematite plates is interpreted to represent various stages of nucleation, crystallisation and progressive growth of hematite from the primary ore-forming fluid in areas that were once iron-rich carbonates or silicates in the BIF.

Design and construction techniques used to develop two highway tunnels in inaccessible mountainous terrain are described. Measures used to adapt the design to the unusual geology and topography are discussed, as well as measures to adapt the construction methods to available equipment, materials, and skills. Sharp local variations in geoloqic conditions resulted in field modifications to both design and construction techniques. The geology is a volcanic ash and breccia-agglomerate at one site, a jointed andesite at the other, which is also the site of a major landslide. Both rock reinforcement in the form of pretensioned and grouted rock bolts with a shotcrete lining,and rock support by struc- tural steel sets with a reinforced concrete lining were used. A canyonside location and high lateral in-situ stresses required modification of design procedures. Pilot tunnels at both sites resulted in adapting the designs to site conditions with large savings in lining costs, disclosing problem areas in advance of the main excavation, and cushioning of blasting pressure to minimize stability problems.

Historical research has played a significant role in the rebirth of the Bendigo Goldfield. The historical research undertaken by the company has been directed to specific areas such as verifying the total gold production of the field, the gold production from defined blocks on each of the major anticlines, the extent of workings of each mine which exceeded 200 m depth, the size and style of reefs mined in each shaft and also within specific domains of the field. Application of this data has assisted in the determination of possible dimensions of different reef styles and the location of mineralisation within each reef system. Description of grade variation, percentage of quartz and the amount and species of accessory sulphide minerals, as well as early geotechnical observations accompanying stoping methodologies, provides valuable analogues for reef structure being defined in the current program. Historical information on shafts on the two anticlines the company is exploring has allowed the postulation and recognition of repetition of reef development within the same stratigraphy in the hinge zones of the adjacent folds. The similarities of mineralisation styles across the field within both specific lithological units and structural setting has had important implications in respect to exploration drill targeting and the estimation of grade and tonnes.

The contiguous Kotre Basantpur and Pachmo (KBP) coal blocks in the Hazaribagh District of Jharkhand State in east India are being developed by Tata Steel Limited (Tata Steel) to supply coking coal to a new steel mill at Kalinganagar in Orissa.The planning challenges are many. The multiple coal seams range in thickness up to 6 m and extend to nearly 500 m depth, with dips up to 25¦ and highly variable quality. Several normal faults with throws up to 150 m intersect the deposit. There is little room for waste dumping on the lease, several large nalas (seasonal creeks) cross the blocks, and the KBP leases are not contiguous with Tata Steel's existing mining operations at West Bokaro. Geotechnical conditions, while not well defined at this stage, are largely unfavourable. There are several villages on the blocks, and extensive paddy fields. In 2009, Adelaide Mining Consultants Pty Ltd (AMC) completed a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a production level of 8 Mt/a. A terrace mining system was proposed using 28 m3 hydraulic excavators and 185 t trucks working horizontal up-dip slices. Subsequently the viability of in-pit crushing and conveying was assessed, but the full results were not available for this paper.It is planned to extract a total of 147 Mt of raw coal at a strip ratio of 5.2 bank cubic metres per tonne (bcm/t). The planned maximum pit depth is over 300 m.The project includes a washery, a 2 + 25 MW fluidised bed power station to utilise all the coarse washery rejects, and a railway spur line to carry the washed coal to the railhead some 7 km distant.

From time to time failures occur in structures made of lead, and the failure may be due to corrosion involving a definite thinning of the lead sheet, or it may be of such a nature that cracks develop and the lead appears to disintegrate. The idea of lead cracking will at once suggest something abnormal, for common experience shows that this metal is very ductile and will withstand considerable bending without showing any sign of fracture. Cracking, on the other hand, is usually associated with brittleness.Fig. 1 is a natural-size photograph of a cracked sheet of lead. Prior to photographing, the sheet was etched byimmersion in a solution of ammonium molybdate. Several characteristics of this crack will be evident. First of all it is distinctly a zigzag crack, and secondly it passes between, rather than through, certain well-defined areas which appear bright in the photograph. This is particularly noticeable at the lower end where the crack appears to terminate.

The subject which I have chosen for my paper is one that I am sure has occurred to the minds of nearly every mining man on these goldfields at some time or other. I refer to the carrying out of hydraulic mining on a fairly large scale on some ofthe alluvial areas of the West Australian goldfields. There are many, no doubt, who have the question ready at the present moment, "But where is the water coming from? " However, the great difficulties in the way are not due to the want of natural facilities, but due to the fact that sufficiently large areas cannot be leased for this purpose under the present Mining Act. Now, ever since the inception of the West Australian goldfields there has been the old familiar cry when referring to some alluvial gully or flat, "I wish I had a head of water to sluice that ground," but what seems an impossibility at times can be brought to a very great possibility by the use of a little thought and the expenditure of the necessary capital. This is so as regards West Australia with sluicing which, in spite of the its having so many detractors, can be carried out successfully in certain localities if the ordinary facilities on the part of the Govenment are given, and on the other hand the necessary capital is supplied. Alluvial gold areas, I propose now to draw your attention to first of all, the numerous alluvial areas that exist around Coolgardie, Kalgoorlie, Bulong, Kurnalpi and many other centres. Some of these areas have afforded fortunes inthe early days to the alluvial miner, and also afforded a living for years to many diggers' by the use of the dryblowing...

Incidental to the progress of a geological survey of the Kalgoorlie goldfield during 1927-28 a number of specimens of telluride minerals were obtained, chiefly with the help of Mr. F. G. Brinsden, general manager of the South Kalgurli mine, and Mr. Ernest Williams, general manager of the Boulder Perseverance mine. This collection was supplemented by a number of small specimens, including the rare copper telluride, which were collected and preseryed from the Kalgurli mine by Mr. A. E. Paton, and also by a few miscellaneous specimens from the collection o{ Mr. S. F. C. Cook, of the Palace Hotel, Kalgoorlie.An extensive knowledge of the rare tellurium-bearing minerals was compiled during the last century from occurrences in Transylvania and Colorado. The recognition of different species has been based on chemical analyses and crystallographic measurements. In a few species there has been an absence of crystalline form, and these, together with the discoveries in this century of rickardite and "weissite" muthmannite and empressite, have depended chiefly on the chemical analysis for identification. On the other hand, the crystalline form of nagyagite and stiitzite has been described in detail, while their precise chemical formulae were doubtfully defined.

Several types of drainage structure providecost-effective environmental controls for water supply to Charters Towers and its mining industry. Drainage groves maintain bank-levee, channel, pool, and spring structures. Failure of drainage structures leads to anoxic fermentation of channel fill releasing residues, such as arsenic, which would otherwise pass harmlesly by fixed on sedimentary particles.Experiments along drainage structures indicate that productive agroforestry could be integrated with expeditious development of groves to cope with environmental change.

In 2005, Solid Energy New Zealand Limited obtained non-notified consent for the disposal of 1Mt of coal ash at the Rotowaro minesite, forming part of a coal supply agreement with the Huntly Power Station. The consenting of major mine site activities has historically required wide consultation and involves notification of the application.   The risk and cost associated with consultation can be significantly reduced via a non-notified process. A non-notified consenting process necessitates environmental effects to be shown to be æless than minorÆ, which requires the combination of robust science and a pragmatic approach to design, assessment of environmental effects, and consenting issues.   Key issues examined included consideration of how to practically operate a significant disposal project within the confines of an operating mine, minimising the costs, civil and geotechnical design and practical issues associated with traditional disposal. Environmental issues specifically related to the coal ash, led to a site specific performance driven approach to management rather than relying on conventional prescriptive approaches. Environmental issues of concern include the leaching of boron and aluminium from ash into groundwater and mine water management systems where both boron and aluminium can occur at elevated levels.   Coal ash exhibits unusual geochemical characteristics reflecting the primary coal composition and the combustion process. The dominant coal type combusted at the Huntly Power Station is derived from Rotowaro and the resulting ash is cementitious and has a high alkalinity. As a result the disposal design is based on the characteristics of the ash itself rather than the material into, or onto which the ash is disposed. Non-notified status was able to be achieved through consideration of these key characteristics of the ash, ensuring that the dimensions of the disposal site and each location was designed to minimise the flow of groundwater through the ash and demonstrating that the physical ash disposal effects are less than minor compared to the consented mining operation.
