The Copper Concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited treats approximately 6 Mt of chalcopyrite ore annually. The ore is currently sourced from the 1100 and 3000 orebodies at Mount Isa. Chalcopyrite is the only significant copper bearing mineral, with pyrite, quartz and dolomite being major gangue minerals. Ore is typically 10% chalcopyrite, 11% iron sulphides and 79% non-sulphide gangue. Copper ore is treated through two autogenous mills, two ball mills and a flotation circuit. The autogenous mills replaced a crushing plant, two rod mills and two primary ball mills during 1991. For routine analysis of concentrator performance, composite samples of mill feed, final concentrate and tailings are generated every 4 week period. All samples are sized and size fractions are assayed. Recovery of mineral species to the concentrate are then calculated for each size fraction. Sometimes liberation analysis was also performed by QEM*SEM (Quantitative Evaluation of Material by Scanning Electron Microscope).

Truck/shovel operations constitute 50 - 60 per cent of the cost of open pit mining operations. Mining companies, therefore, are constantly seeking to close the gap between actual truck/shovel productive capacity and maximum potential truck/shovel capacity. This paper analyses the performance of a mixed truck/shovel fleet in an open cut coal mine in Australia. It analyses operating delays, and proposes a novel graphical means of determining truck-limited or shovel-limited operations. A goal seeking algorithm is advanced in order to maximise truck/shovel match factors (MF) and hence optimise fleet productivity.

The comparatively low winter rainfall, exposure to heavy salt laden coastal winds, and the consequent high evaporation rate, are important considerations in the rehabilitation of the Maslins Beach Sand Pit. The deficit of rainfall over evaporation is assessed at 1085 mm per annum. Such a coastal environment complicates the establishment of plants. The endemic flora found on the Sand Pit environs is mainly low wind-planed shrubs and mat plants. The dunes near the coast support an association dominated by Atriplex cinerea, Spinifex hirsutus, Scirpus nodosus, and Olearia axillaris. The coastal cliffs carry a more diverse vegetation dominated by Beyeria lechenaultii and Eutaxia microphylla. Overburden is used to develop a new landscape to screen operations, batter final faces, and cover rubbish at the nearby Council dump. The early overburden dumps were built with little regard for stability, but the more recent practice of using scrapers has resulted in more stable dumps. The erosion problems created by poor compaction have been controlled by contour banks, diversion drains, bitumen lined run-off drains, and hay mulching.

The Tropicana Gold Mine, owned by AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd (70% owned and managed) and Independence Group NL (30%) is located 330 kilometres east-northeast of Kalgoorlie, Australia, in the newly developed Albany-Fraser Orogen. Following extensive feasibility studies, a high pressure grinding roll (HPGR)-ball milling circuit was selected based on the reduced power requirements and thus reduced operating expenses. The HPGR-ball mill circuit was estimated to require 75% of the energy of a standard semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill circuit. Even with an anticipated greater capital cost, the HPGR-ball mill circuit was found to give significantly better financial returns in all cases investigated in the feasibility study. A comparison between the specific energy requirements of the HPGR, crush and SAG based circuits (SABC) from the feasibility work was conducted and the HPGR circuit was found to be considerably more energy efficient. A survey was conducted and the efficiency of the HPGR was similar to both the overall circuit design and the HPGR laboratory results, reflecting the accuracy that is possible for design and operation of HPGR circuits.Between 2015 to 2016, the Tropicana circuit has achieved a 20% increase in throughput from 780 to 930 t/h, and this increase has been maintained in 2017. This improvement can largely be attributed to upgrades to material handling processes, increased HPGR speed and smaller HPGR screen apertures. In the mining industry, rock blasting can be considered as the first phase of comminution. The downstream phases of comminution are mechanical, and consist in consecutive stages of crushing and milling for grain size reduction. The total energy of mechanical comminution depends on grain size and on the resistance of the material to grindability. Usually, the first is quantified by the grain size distribution or one of its KPIs (such as the diameters X50 or X80), while the latter by the working index (WI), representing the amount of energy necessary to reduce the size of grains of a determined amount of material to the desired equivalent diameter (usually expressed in kilowatt hours per tonne – kWh/t). It is widely recognised that it is possible to manage the output of a blast in terms of grain size distribution varying specific charge (powder factor – PF) and charge distribution; specific algorithms such as the KUZ-RAM or the SWEBREC have been created to predict such output. It has also been demonstrated how higher PFs weaken the blasted material by creating micro-fractures that reduce its WI. This paper focuses on a related aspect: the influence of charge distribution on the specific comminution energy in crushing and milling. Small-scale blasts have been performed on 14 marble blocks with different PFs and charge distribution. For every PF, charges have been designed to simulate concentrated and distributed geometries. Concentrated charges simulate opencast blasts with large-diameter holes, with large burdens and spacings. Distributed charges simulate bench blasts with small-diameter holes and reduced burden and spacing. Three control blocks have been fragmented by mechanical means for comparison. For every sample the grain size distribution and the WI in ball mill has been determined. Results show the correlations between charge distributions and the specific energy of mechanical comminution in milling. Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (B.O.S.) commenced in Australia in December, 1962. Two 200-ton furnaces were installed initially at Newcastle with a 50-ton furnace coupled to a continuous casting machine added in 1967. In 1965, two 100-ton furnaces were installed at Whyalla plant and two 225-ton furnaces are nearing com- pletion at Port Kembla to commence oper- ations in 1972. Plant layouts in each centre differ due to changing circumstance and increasing knowledge of the B.O.S. process since 1962. Raw materials are a most important factor for good operation of the process. Most materials come from within Australia but some are imported. General operating practices are similar in each plant, although treatment of fume at Port Kembla will be by the OG (Oxygen Converter Gas Recovery) Process as against electrostatic precipitators in Newcastle and Whyalla. Special alloy steels as well as plain carbon steels can be made by the B.O.S. process. Production potential of the process in Australia has yet to be fully utilised with 45 per cent of steel production coming from B.O.S. In 1971.

Shortwall continuous mining as first introduced at Burwood colliery, and currently being used at John Darling, Lambton, and Corrimal collieries, is a method of coal winning which was pioneered in the Newcastle district. The system uses individual hydraulic self-advancing chocks for roof support and the coal winning operation is by continuous miners and shuttle cars. Where physical conditions are suitable the system provides a safe, efficient and economically viable basis for pillar extraction. Shortwall operations have been conducted successfully in the Victoria and Dudley seam, near the coastal fringe of the Newcastle district and are now being tried out in the more difficult conditions of the Bulli seam in the Illawarra district.

A review of the literature indicated that several studies have been reported on the dissolution of gold using iodide/iodine, bromide/bromine leaching systems. Although the reagent costs are much cheaper for chloride/chlorine (or hypochlorite) this system has not been fully evaluated. This study was conducted to evaluate the fundamental chemistry of the chloride/hypochlorite leaching system. The CHEMIX program was used to model the stability of various gold species existing in the solution. The gold dissolution rate at different conditions was determined using gold strips immersed in various mixtures of chloride/hypochlorite. Leaching experiments were conducted to test the extraction of gold from various ores (oxidised and copper-gold ores), showing a promising prospect for this technique in various applications.

Blast furnace is a countercurrent moving bed reactor that produces pig iron from iron bearing materials like pellet, sinter or lump ore. The furnace has cylindrical shape and the lump solid materials are alternatively charged onto the top of the furnace. Hot air is introduced through tuyeres that are set on the lower furnace wall. Auxiliary fuels (pulverised coal, oil or natural gas) and raw materials (fine ore or fluxes) are injected into the furnace with blast air from the tuyeres. In front of the tuyeres, coke particles react with oxygen in the blast air and generate carbon monoxide. The hot reacting gas heats up the lump solids and reduces iron oxides in the upper furnace. In the middle height of the furnace, the reduced iron and slag are fused by the combustion heat and form the cohesive zone. The molten iron and slag that are generated in this region trickle down through the packed bed of coke particles and flow into the bottom of the furnace. Therefore, the flows of gas, lump solids and liquids exist at the same time in the lower part of the blast furnace.

The heavy sulfide zone (HSZ) of the Grasberg deposit has the geometry of a funnel and is located at the contact of the mineralised intrusive and the relatively barren sedimentary rock types. The geometry and the rock properties associated with the HSZ plays a significant role in pushback design and sequencing. Most of the HSZ has relatively low strengths which must be considered in slope design and management. This paper presents the open pit mine geotechnical and planning design considerations associated with the HSZ.

Discovered in 1991 by combined plume detection and bottom-tow photography (Binns and Scott, 1993) and for some years thereafter the highest tenor mineral occurrence known on the ocean floor, the PACMANUS hydrothermal field has since been surveyed and sampled in great detail by CSIRO and international research agencies (Binns et al, 1995; Auzende, Urabe and Scientific Party, 1996; Binns et al, 2002; Tivey et al, 2006). Since 2005 commercial surveys employing deep-tow geophysical packages and remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs) have been conducted by Nautilus Minerals Inc and partners within Papua New Guinea-granted offshore exploration licenses (Nautilus Minerals Inc, 2008). Two academic drilling programs have been conducted, one under the international Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) directed at deep structure (Shipboard Scientific Party, 2002; Binns, Barriga and Miller, 2007), and one using a 5 m capable seafloor diamond drill to investigate the immediate subsurface at one site (Petersen et al, 2005). Low-loaders or 'floats' for relocating equipment in surface mines are limited to a capacity of approximately 350 t. In the iron ore industry it is desirable to be able to rapidly relocate excavators in order to maintain production rates within appropriate quality limits. In addition, the ability to rapidly relocate heavy equipment raises the possibility of improving the quality of repairs by performing maintenance in controlled shop conditions. However, many iron ore operations operate hydraulic excavators in the 600 to 800 t range, with newly released excavator models exceeding 800 t. These excavators are too large to float using conventional technology. This paper examines the potential for using multi-bogie transporters to relocate large hydraulic excavators in surface mines. Recent innovations have seen the development of modular transporters which can be coupled together to achieve larger platform areas. When separated, and with their drive bogies neutralised, these units are able to be towed behind prime movers and relocated between mines via public roads. The potential cost savings for relocating a Terex RH170 excavator in an open pit coal mine are examined. In the first six months of 2008, the analysis showed the potential for a 38 per cent reduction in total travel time with a corresponding revenue increase of approximately $350 k. The paper recommends that a feasibility study be conducted into offering a heavy equipment relocation service within the Pilbara region.

Tin-polymetallic vein type deposits are one of the major source of metal producers in the Circum Pacific Belt. This type of deposit is of great importance for the modem electronics and medical industries because of their high content of rare metals (especially indium and bismuth). We have studied two representatives, Tosham of India (Cu-In-Bi-Sn-W-Ag-Au), and Mount Pleasant of Canada (Zn-Cu-In-Bi-Sn-W), using proton and electron microprobes in order to delineate the distribution of medicallhigh-tech rare metals. The electron microprobe study showed that major indium carrier in such type of deposit are roquesite (CulnS2), sphalerite, stannite and a Cu-Zn-Fe-In-Sn-S mineral; and that indium is incorporated in sulfides by coupled substitution like Cu + In = 2(Zn + Fe). The proton microprobe showed that indium at trace levels is also present in chalcopyrite and pyrite. In addition, zinc, copper, arsenic, antimony, selenium, tin, and bismuth are common in chalcopyrite and pyrite. Arsenopyrite contains nickel, copper, zinc, silver, tin, antimony and bismuth. In chalcopyrite and pyrite, zinc, arsenic, indium, bismuth and lead are higher in Mount Pleasant ore, but silver is higher at Tosham. Also thallium and gold were found only in Tosham pyrite. The Tosham deposit is genetically related to S-type magma, while the Mount Pleasant deposit is related to A-type granite. Tosham ore contains zinc-bearing biotites that coexist with chalcopyrite in ore bodies but Mount Pleasant ore lacks such biotite. We propose that the difference in elemental abundance between the two deposits are caused by the different character of source magma and different mineral associations of the ore body.

The main task of grade control on a daily basis is to define the material that should be mined to a destination under various categories. This can be determined by grade, lithology, quality and blending criteria. In the case of multi-element deposits or deposits with various blending or other processing criteria the optimum selection of ore block boundaries can be quite complex. In every case the balance between ore loss and dilution must be considered when designing the ore block boundaries and this becomes a risk-based decision when using the conditional simulation model. The use of such systems allows grade control to meet specific targets, such as budget tonnages and grades and blended product specifications. Two case studies are presented: the Prominent Hill copper/gold mine and the Rapu Rapu zinc/copper mine. Mining is based on a rational grade control strategy involving a number of factors, including strong geological control, advanced geostatistical approaches, such as conditional simulation, and optimisation of the ore blocking to meet production requirements. This provides an objective, transparent and repeatable grade control strategy.

Simple quotation of quantities of coal reserves neglects the relationship between qualities of coals and their efficient use. If exploitation of a deposit is contemplated, its life expectancy can be deduced only if its reserves are estimated according to the coal user's technological standards. A wide range in properties will satisfy a steaming coal, whereas a high vitrinite high rank coal would be preferred for coking and a low inertinite low rank coal for conversion. In competitive trading the buyer's commercial specification may require weighing against the producer's practical ideals, especially when beneficiation is critical. Differentiation of grades in quality of a deposit provides an intelligent understanding of the economic importance of the deposit. The Wongawilli seam of the New South Wales Southern Coalfield exemplifies the effect of quality criteria upon the extent of in situ, recoverable and marketable classes of economic reserves. Effective management of a deposit will result from simultaneous quotation of coal qualities and quantities in a statement of its reserves.

Queensland Mines Limited operates a small uranium treatment plant at Nabarlek in the Arnhem Land Aboriginal Reserve, some 265 km due east of Darwin. It was the wish of the local Aboriginal people that the ore be treated over an eight year period and that no township be constructed in Arnhem Land. Due to these wish- es it was decided to house employees and their families in Darwin and fly the employees to the minesite for work rosters. A singleman's style camp only was constructed at Nabarlek. To satisfy the Aboriginal people's wishes all recreation time is spent offsite thus lead- ing to a roster system whereby employees spend three distinct periods of 6, 6 and 4 days on- site, broken by recreation periods of 3, 4 and 5 days in Darwin, during each 28 day period. Employees are divided into four opposing rosters, which allows at any given time for approximately half the workforce to be onsite and the other half on rest and recreation leave in Darwin. This method of staffing has generally proved to be most satisfactory although at times problems arise, in terms of both product- ion and social effect not normally encountered when operating within more conventional circum- Stances.

"In some lode-style gold deposits the geological (lithological) uncertainty may have similar economic significance as the grade uncertainty. In the absence of precise knowledge of the deposit geology, geological models of these types of deposits that are used to constrain spatially the estimated (or simulated) grade values may influence significantly the contained metal. Methods for assessing geological uncertainty quantitatively are rarely considered due to their perceived inability to consider exhaustive geological interpretations, and resulting models that often appear geologically unrealistic. Furthermore, should the lodes have been subjected to folding, or where the mineralisation continuity does not follow a planar orientation along strike or down dip, standard methods of variography and interpolation using linear vectors in space often do not provide a good representation of continuity. An alternative approach is to relate spatial samples from adjacent drill holes using an unfolding plane.The paper demonstrates conditional simulation of the geometry and gold grades of a folded lode-style deposit where:simulation of lode geometry considers explicitly the geologistÆs interpretation, andsimulation of gold grade values that consider explicitly the folded nature of the lodes.The results are contrasted to the traditional approach of linear vectors in real space for a single lode interpretation.CITATION:Richmond, A, 2012. The Mt Morgan Minesite in Central Queensland has been subject to both underground and surface gold mining operations since the late-1800s. The site is largely unrehabilitated and poor quality surface run-off and subsurface leachate is contaminating the nearby Dee River. The site is dominated by a large open cut, which now stores contaminated surface and subsurface run-off. Three models were used to simulate the complex hydrologic processes occurring at the Mt Morgan Mine: a rainfall-run-off model, a groundwater model and a storage behavioural model. Study results showed that the open cut is filling with water and will soon spill large volumes of highly polluted water to the Dee River on a regular basis if no remedial action is taken. This will result in a three-fold increase in pollutant load to the Dee River. Based on a consideration of water quality and quantity it was concluded that the first priority for future minesite water management should be the prevention of spills from the open cut. Potential management options to achieve this objective included surface rehabilitation, catchment diversions, modification of the pump-back system and controlled releases to the Dee River during floods. However, assessing the relative effectiveness of these measures required a thorough understanding of the complex surface and subsurface hydrology of the site. The results of a 100 year simulation of hydrologic processes revealed that previously favoured management options would be ineffective in preventing spills to the river. On this basis, a continuous treat and release strategy was proposed as the only reliable method of preventing future spills. The results of this study demonstrate that good environmental management decisions must be based on an understanding of the relevant physical processes and consideration of cumulative effects over an appropriate time scale.

This paper comprises a discussion of standards for comparing conditions in mines, of methods for measuring the flow of air, of a comparison of fan performances, and the application of these matters to mines in Western Australia.UNDERGROUND CONDITIONSIn approaching the question of mine ventilation one naturally searches for some standard by which to measure the conditions in a mine.There are several clauses in the Mines Regulation Act defining the conditions which are permitted. The quantity of CO2 is limited to 0·25 by volume, but the estimation of CO2 involves a chemical determination and is not suited for general use in a mine.The maximum temperature is fixed at 87 0 F. (dry bulb), and at 80° (wet bulb). The reading of temperature is easily done in the working places, and this is a very valuable and practical test of the conditions in a mine.The wet bulb temperature is probably the most important factor in determining working conditions. It is obvious that human life cannot be sustained for any appreciable period if the wet bulb temperature is above blood heat (about 97°F.). In places where the wet bulb temperature is 90°F. there is danger of heat stroke.In places where the air in a mine is still, the wet bulb temperature rises to a value close to the rock temperature.Adequate ventilation cools the workings by transference of heat from the rock to the air stream, and the temperature...

Anyone who has driven backwards using only their rear view mirrors knows how difficult it is to avoid spinning the steering wheel the wrong way. So why run your mine that way? Traditionally Reconciliation has focused on the past performance of the mine. In this paper we make a case for Prognostication û the act of forecasting or predicting something in the future from present indications or signs. Reconciliation is a common activity carried out at most mines around the world. Countless geologists and engineers spend hours poised in front of spreadsheets diligently comparing how their resource/reserve model, grade control, and survey pick ups compare to what was actually produced. The result is usually a group of factors, which are applied to future estimates in an attempt to better predict how the operation may perform. Unfortunately, if the road ahead isnÆt the same as what you have just been down, youÆll be æoff-roadingÆ in no time! An alternative is to constantly collect and analyse key measurements that are used to calibrate critical estimates in an iterative process. When variations occur, they are analysed and corrective action is taken to ensure the estimates and measurements realign. In this way the estimates become forecasts and can then form the basis for decision making to ensure that what does happen in the future will match the plan or schedule. By automating this process, some mines have been able to be proactive on a daily basis in order to improve the overall performance of the operation. This paper outlines the key estimates and measurements used for reconciliation, details the characteristics of an automated web based information management system to facilitate the process and provides some insights about how mining operations might move beyond reconciliation.
