Surface mining accounts for more than 50% of the world's total mineral production. In future years this status is expected to change somewhat in favour of surface mining. The production technology during the past decade has concentrated on greater degree of mechanization with high capacity heavy duty equip- ment. This trend will continue. Next two decades will also see microproces- ,or based equipment, health and performance monitoring and management information systems fully integrated with excavated and material handling systems which in themselves will be amenable to auto- matic and remote control. Computerized mine planning will also be integrated within the system providing a fully integrated planning, excavat- ing and materials handling system. The surface mines of the 1990's and beyond will be so computer dependent that manpower will be reduced to one third of current levels.

Compacted tablets of hematite ore (containing clay and quartz gangue) and limestone were heated in air in an ULVAC-RIKO rapid heating furnace to maximum temperatures in the range 1200-1350°C.The resulting sintered products were examined in terms of mineralogy, texture, strength and reducibility. The sintered tablets are a good analogue of normal plant sinters. These investigations have shown that sinters of optimum reducibility are produced in the narrow temperature range 1250-l275°C. Conditions for the production of such highly reducible sinters under plant conditions are discussed.

The KR Process is a joint development by VOEST-ALPINE, Austria and its subsidiary company KORF ENGINEERING, Germany. This new technology allows production of hot metal on the basis of non-coking coal. The KR Process is based on the idea of separating the process steps realized in the blast furnace (generation of reduction gas, reduction of iron oxide and melting of the reduced iron) and including coking of coal. These reactions are carried out in two reactors: - the melter gasifier, where non- coking coal is coked and gasified into a high quality reduction gas and hot prereduced iron is melted. - the reduction furnace, where iron oxide is reduced by the reduction gas generated in the melter gasifier and discharged in a hot state. In order to prove the process a pilot plant has been set up in Kehl/ Rhine in 1981 with a nominal capacity of 60.000 tpy.

Models of the evolution of the hydrothermal systems that form porphyry Cu (Mo-Au) deposits are compromised because aqueous magma-derived fluids in the ore zones of most deposits have changed from their original magmatic compositions as a result of cooling, depressurising, mineral precipitation, brine-vapour unmixing and fluid-rock reactions. However, in deep quartz-rich, sulfide-poor veins from numerous porphyry type deposits, we have identified parental fluids trapped in inclusions at near magmatic temperatures and pressures above the brine-vapour unmixing solvus. We have analysed these inclusions for bulk salinity, density, solute chemistry, helium isotopic ratios and elemental composition. These parental inclusions contain 35 - 70 volume per cent bubble, are low to moderate salinity, contain up to ten mol per cent CO2, and commonly contain a chalcopyrite daughter crystal. Our results indicate that these Cu-rich fluids transport Cu from a plutonic complex below upward into a hydrothermal system, where decompression, cooling, unmixing and water-rock reaction drive ore-mineral precipitation. Na/Cl ratios greater than one indicate that in addition to chlorine, sulfur and/or carbonate must play a key role in Cu transportation. Helium isotope ratios indicate that between ~15 and 100 per cent of helium in these fluids is mantle-derived. We suggest that in addition to He, volatiles from mafic magmas in the mantle are also likely to supply CO2, Cu and S to the fluids that form porphyry copper deposits. Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd (KCGM) is a management company, formed in 1989, to manage the assets and operate the Kalgoorlie joint venture for the owner companies Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie Limited (GMK) and Homestake Gold of Australia Limited (HGAL). Mining is still in progress on the 'Golden Mile' and surrounding areas more than 100 years after Paddy Hannan's discovery adjacent to the active Mt Charlotte mine. From 1893 until 30 June 1995 the Kalgoorlie Goldfields has produced approximately 45 million ounces (-1400 tonnes) of gold from mining and treating about 179 million tonnes of ore. In the smelting section, flexible fuels such as coal or coke are used in place of heavy fuel oil in order to utilize energy sources more efficiently. Heat recovered from the off gas of the furnace has been converted by the waste heat boiler into steam, which is used for self power generation and for heating or maintaining various temperatures. The amount of the recovered steam in the smelter is currently increasing due to maximum utilization of powdered cokes. The heat source required to maintain the temperature of the electrolyte in the tank house is electric power and steam. However until recent year this steam was provided by its own heavy oil combustion type boiler in the tank house since the amount of steam consumed in heating the electrolyte is large. Though experimental work over the last few years has shown the advantages of reducing steam in the tank house by fully covering the cell, the implementation of the full cover can lead to other operating problems. However various improvements, mainly the covering of the cell with a simple device, have led to greatly reduced steam consumption. As a result, steam for the tank house is now provided by the waste heat boiler only bringing more efficient energy usage.

This paper describes the test re- sults which give a complete proccess of failure of concrete lining embedded in sand medium under load, including the order of appearance of crack along the lining up to failure. nor each crack appearance corresponding calculation being made to assess the redistribution of moment and thrust force in critical section including crown section, section making 45¦ with the vertical etc. De- flection at the above stated critical sections are also measured at each stage of loading. The pressure along the top hori- zontal surface of embedded lining and the vertical sides are measured by pres -sure gauges embedded in sand medium. fhe test results show a complete figure of rupture characteristics of concrete lining embedded in soft ground which approximates alluvial deposite often occur in metro construction at cities near the river side. These test results have been taken as a reference in assessing the action behavior of concrete lining in certain cities in China.

Direct measurements of liquid contents in foams obtained from (x-terpineol a-T) n-pentanol (AmOH) and n-octanol (OctOH) solutions were carried out using a column of special construction. The column enables to determine the liquid contents by cutting-off foam layers of various thicknesses and measuring amounts of liquid contained in the cut-off foam layers. Liquid contents in the whole foam layers, in the top foam layers of thickness 14 ¦ 1 mm and distribution of water alongside foam height were determined. The average liquid contents were high and reached a level of 30, 35 and 40 per cent for foams formed from cc-T, AmOH and OctOH solutions, respectively. The liquid contents in the top foam layers were much smaller. They were of an order of five per cent for a-T and AmOH and 12 per cent for OctOH. On the basis of the liquid distribution alongside foam height some practical conclusions concerning possibilities of minimising amounts of liquid contained in the collected concentrate are presented.

Data Metallogenica (DM) is unique as a global mineral sample collection and deposit database with over 70 000 rock samples and a wide range of descriptive, photographic and measurement data. Subscribers have access to approximately four gigabytes of on-line data with many examples included on the public pages. DM commenced its life on the Pacific rim in 1971 and much recent growth has focused on countries of the Pacific margin, particularly Australia, Fiji, Chile, Indonesia and Peru. Approximately 600 separate deposits and mineral occurrences in this region are represented in DM. The sets of rock samples have been photographed at high resolution and included on the web site, together with unpublished descriptions, deposit cross-sections, bibliographies, field and mine photographs, petrology and reflectance mineralogy. Figures and abstracts from PhD theses are a new addition and the donation of proprietary databases by companies and individuals is an encouraging trend. DM increasingly is being viewed as an acceptable and important repository for æfragileÆ and irreplaceable personal and company data, it is also being recognised in its true light as a high level information system, not solely a collection of rock samples. Data Metallogenica is a not-for-profit venture of AMIRA International that requires self-funding from December 2004. Growth and development must be funded entirely out of subscription and sponsorship revenues because no government subsidy is provided. The Pacific rim is in the mainstream of mining and exploration activities worldwide and those involved have much to gain from a dynamically sustaining DM. Thick clay tills below potash mine tailings and brine ponds are important natural barriers protecting fresh water aquifers in Saskatchewan. Centrifuge modelling was applied to assess geochemical processes and impacts of dilute brine (0.1 M NaCl) migration through clay till core samples obtained from non saline, unoxidised clay till at a mine site. At accelerated gravity of 876 + g, during each day of centrifuge modelling, flow driven through a 52 mm length core simulated transport through a 45 m thick clay over ~2100 years. Hydraulic conductivity, monitored continuously before and during brine permeation, was low and relatively constant (8.5 + 10-12 m/s), confirming that confining stresses prevent permeability increase. Core density and porosity measurements confirmed that reactive transport occurred under realistic in situ conditions. Breakthrough (defined by C/C0 = 0.5) of non-reactive Cl- occurred at 25 days. The slight delay for Na+ breakthrough, associated with small increases in Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations in the effluent were attributed to ion exchange, but carbonate reactions were relatively unimportant. Cation exchange analysis of core samples was inconclusive without corrections for porewater Na+ and carbonate dissolution. Geochemical processes that were observed during centrifuge modelling were successfully simulated using the 1D geochemical transport code PHREEQC. Solute transport was dominated by diffusion with limited ion exchange to delay Na+ migration. Brine would not break through a 45 m thick clay for tens of thousands of years. Based on these findings, the thick clay till at this site, if laterally extensive and undisturbed by drilling activity, is likely to act as an effective natural barrier to vertical brine migration over the long term.

After eighteen months of discussions with employees and their trade unions, multiskilling was introduced at the Hellyer concentrator in early 1989, coinciding with the plant commissioning. Multiskilling was introduced with the Hellyer Skills Acquisition Program together with intensive training and performance assessment. Design innovations have helped to improve productivity. There have been some difficult times with personnel tending to return to the old and traditional ways of operating. In general, these have been overcome to ensure the success of multiskilling at Hellyer. The main factors making multiskilling effective have been continual training and assessment, and a competent team of shift supervisors. This has improved work standards towards the high level expected from a multiskilled approach without compromising safety standards.

Recovery of metallic values from lean-grade raw materials as well as from secondary/intermediate industrial products is of immense importance to a country like India which is not endowed with extensive sources of copper and nickel. The results of a few studies carried out in this area are described in Part-I and Part-II in this article. A novel anode casting system, specially designed for a small copper refinery which had been set up to produce copper wire bars/rods is described briefly in Part-III.

We operate a 50 cubic metre per hour mobile alluvial tin mine on small scattered deposits in the Irvinebank area. Wash is loaded by a Cat. 950 front end loader into the bin of a screening section and screen undersize is pumped to a separate jig unit. Both units are rubber tyre mounted and are shifted once a month when the haul distance gets to about 150 metres. The shift takes about 8 hours.The screening section is sited close to the face with a ramp for dumping in and a one metre drop for the screen oversize which is removed by the loader.A reciprocating plate feeder with variable rate hydraulic drive, feeds wash onto a horizontal 1.2 metre x 2.2 metre two deck Kinergy screen. Minus 10 millimetre undersize is pumped by a Warman 6/4 sand pump with a 37 kW variable speed Reeves Motordrive to the jig unit.The jigs are placed 20 to 70 metres away so that tailings will run back into previously mined ground. Reject stone is used to impound the sand and mud, allowing the water to filter through and return to the feed water pump.An MTE trapezoidal module is used as a primary jig. Hutch product is pumped to an eight cell clean-up jig which we developed ourselves along MTE lines. It has a trapezoidal shape and sawtooth stroke provided by cams. Clean tin is taken from the first four spigots. These consist of clear plastic tubes fitted with taps so that there is no water loss except when the tin is drawn off. Fine concentrate from the last four spigots is put over a curvilinear table which sits on a steel base packed with earth.

An analysis of pumping figures suggests that there are two distinct styles of water inflow patterns in Zambia's mines. Carbonate hosted orebodies (Kabwe and Nampundwe) display a characteristic seasonal variation in water inflow with peak pumping showing a short time lag with respect to the rainfall pattern. Aquifer characteristics are controlled by secondary, weathering enhanced, near surface phenomena. Non-carbonate hosted orebodies such as those of the Copperbelt (Konkola and Nkana) occur in successions of highly variable lithology and consequently there are stacked aquifers of variable character. Inflow of water does not display seasonal variation. The major factors affecting the amount of inflow are the structural setting, the geometry of the orebody and the local lithostratigraphy. Thus the Konkola orebodies which occur in a saddle shaped open ended basin result in what is probably the wettest mine in the world, pumping some 376,000 cubic metres of water a day.

Gold Fields Ghana Ltd (GF Ghana) currently operates an underground mine at Tarkwa, in south--west Ghana. The mine was operated by Tarkwa Goldfields Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the State Gold Mining Corporation of Ghana (SGMC). The mine was making operating losses and in a poor state of repair. Tarkwa Goldfields retrenched all the staff and GF Ghana assumed management responsibility for its own account on I July 1993.

The Mt Whaleback orebody is in a complex geological regime. A good understanding of geological structure is essential during the design and implementation stages. The amount of information on the rock-mass condition available at the design stage is considerably limited. It is essential to validate the rock-mass properties used in the design during implementation. It is important to achieve integrity of the final pit wall during development and to maintain the integrity until the end of its designed life for safe and economical extraction of ore. The original geological model is updated by way of on-going detailed geological face mapping. Original design is reassessed and is modified based on any significant variations to the previously evaluated geotechnical conditions. Information gathered during design implementation provide tools for effective management of the pit walls. Controlled blasting techniques are employed in the final limits blasting. Presplit blasting is used in most limits blasts. Presplit helps to maintain the integrity of the wall by venting excessive gases from the limits blast. This helps to reduce bedding dilation by gas penetration. Also, it helps to define the design batter for the operators for final batter trimming. Pyritic shale needs special attention during blasting due to its reacting nature. Cablebolting is applied in selective areas to secure small-scale potential instabilities. During the development phase, pit wall monitoring instruments are installed. These instruments are used to monitor the performance of the wall during and after excavation of the slope.

A method that allows data to be mass balanced and screen models to be fitted in a single step is described. The inclusion of several variables to describe the feed data in the fitting procedure allows a mass balance to be conducted at the same time as the fitting of the screen model. Analysis of Groote Eylandt Mining Company screening data has demonstrated that this method is ideally suited to applications where complete stream data are not available. Also, certain random fluctuations in screen model parameters arising from the fitting of consecutive mass balances and screening models are significantly reduced. A cubic spline function with fixed knot positions corresponding to particle sizes and variable (fitted) cumulative percent passing values is used to describe the feed size distribution. When the spline function is interpolated at the experimental feed particle sizes a fitted feed size distribution is obtained. This feed size distribution is then used as input to the screen model calculations from which product size distributions are generated. Since both feed and product size distribution data are used to minimise the residual errors between the observed and fitted stream size distributions, a mass balance is Conducted simultaneously with the screen model parameter fitting.

Artificial ground support has developed into a refined science over the past 20 years. From reactive support systems such as timber props and steel supports, to active systems such as roof bolts and cable anchors, ground support technology has now developed efficient systems that work well in many instances. However this paper demonstrates that there is still a long way to go to develop optimum ground support systems. Some conventional rock bolts and cable anchors emphasise their tensile capacity only, without considering other factors such as their shear strength or shear modulus, or if the support member can transfer all of its support capacity to the surrounding rock. Examples are given of the use of ground anchors with high tensile and shear capacity in underground coal mining as well as examples of slope failures in open pits where the cable bolts have remained intact because they have been unable to transfer their full capacity to the surrounding weak rock mass. For underground coal mines, speed of installation is also of primary concern, but it must also have high tensile and shear capacity both in terms of strength and stiffness. Ground support systems of the future must therefore address these problems. An innovative new rock bolt is discussed which goes some way towards solving these problems. This new rock bolt is screwed into the rock and thus has a direct mechanical interlock with the rock. Initial field results show that it has an extremely high anchor capacity and can be fully installed in approximately 30 seconds. It has considerable capacity to improve the productivity of the coal mining industry.
