The trend towards contracting by major coal mining companies such as BHP Coal and MIM Ltd is examined. Reasons why this trend is occurring are discussed and the concept of partnering is examined. Two case studies are given: the Mt Owen Mine in the Hunter Valley, NSW and the South Walker Creek Mine in the Bowen Basin, Queensland.

This paper presents a generalised methodology in smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) framework to analyse dynamic failure process of rock mass having natural joint under blast-induced stress wave and expansion, and penetration of high pressure gaseous product. The necessary interactions of gas-rock are incorporated in the model which describes features of coupling between damage and plasticity in tension and compression respectively. A Drucker-Prager formulation of plasticity is used to model the behaviour of aggregate field and the Grady-Kipp damage model is employed for tensile strain. These two material behaviours are then brought together within the framework of interacting continua. The model relies on the Drucker-Prager plasticity surface to predict the dilatancy aspect of the material response and to account change of strength according to the strain rate effect. A series of flotation experiments was carried out to study the interaction between the parameters of pulp density (mass per cent of solids in feed slurry) and frother addition (on the basis of solid mass feed rate). It was found that certain combinations of pulp density and frother additions caused large losses in yield. The interactive effect of these parameters can be primarily attributed to the total amount of frother added per unit of water. Consequently it is suggested that frother additions be made on the basis of water flow rate. As frother addition increased, in terms of the amount of frother per unit of water, yield increased rapidly but above an addition rate of about 10 g/tone it reached a plateau. Such results correlated well with qualitative visual observations of changes in bubble size and dispersion, with increasing levels of frother addition.

The key element in the carbon-in-pulp process for gold processing is the loading of dissolved Au(CN)2 from solution onto activated carbon. The mechanism and kinetics of this step have been examined by solution adsorption-desorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for both coconut derived activated carbon and peat-based activated carbon. The results show that these carbon types have the same mechanism and kinetics of adsorption. There is no contribution to the bonding from carbon-oxygen functionalities on the carbon surface, as has been invariably supposed in all previous theories for the mechanism of the reaction. It is shown that Au(CN)Z is reversibly adsorbed intact on and parallel to the graphitic planes of the carbon with the formation of a weak carbon-gold n-donor bond. The kinetic measurement of carbon gold loading reactivity is discussed and use of the Murdoch equation for this test is critically assessed.

Earthen covers are now widely used in the mining industry to control the generation rate and/or release rate of low quality drainage from piles of sulfidic minewastes. Covers are usually designed to reduce the water infiltration rate and in some cases may also reduce the oxygen flux to the underlying sulfides. Engineered covers have only been used since the 1980s, however, and there is very little field data on their performance in the longer term. This lack of information has implications for the degree of confidence that can be placed on the predictions of the environmental impacts of sulfidic minewastes, for the acceptance of close-out criteria by regulatory authorities and for the financial liability of the mining industry. Covers were placed on sulfidic waste rock dumps at the abandoned Rum Jungle uranium mine during 1984 - 1985. These covers were designed to reduce the water infiltration to less than five per cent of incident rainfall by both water shedding and storage-release mechanisms. Regular monitoring by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) demonstrated that the covers performed better than the design criterion for around ten years, but infiltration rates have subsequently increased. There is a 66 per cent probability that the infiltration rate now exceeds five per cent of incident rainfall. The cover on the largest pile, WhiteÆs heap, was sampled in pits dug at eight locations. Sampling was carried out at the end of the monsoonal wet season and again at the end of the ædryÆ season. This, together with laboratory testing, enabled cover performance to be assessed against five criteria: design, construction, cover material characteristics, physico-chemical characteristics and biological characteristics. We are of the opinion that the design of the cover was suitable to achieve the objectives of stability, water shedding, storage-release, and provision of a substrate for vegetation growth. Over most of the surface of the heap, the construction of the covers, drains and erosion prevention structures was in accordance with design specifications. However, several small and localised bare patches on the upper surface of WhiteÆs heap coincide with a reduced cover thickness, which is likely to have been due to poor construction in those patches. The construction of covers on minewastes is dependent on an adequate source of material meeting design specifications. From our limited examination, it appears that there was shortage of material for each of the three zones û a lower impervious clay layer, the moisture storage-release layer and the upper erosion-resistant layer for vegetative growth. An indication of this was that the upper layers in some areas were observed to be thinner than specified. We are of the opinion that this shortage of suitable material has been responsible for some of the changes observed ten years after emplacement. Physical and geotechnical testing indicated that the cover materials no longer meet the original specifications. In particular, the permeability at the 8 locations was found to be greater than specified, by up to several orders of magnitude. The higher permeability may explain the higher observed rainfall infiltration and moisture content of the waste rock. This increased permeability appears to be due to a combination of biological and physical processes û galleries formed by termites and ants and an extensive system of shrinkage/desiccation cracks formed by the development of a polygonal blocky structure involving the entire lower clay layer. The desiccation cracks may fill with coarser illuviated materials and form a conduit through which roots access the underlying waste rock. Measurements were made of oxygen flux into the heap as cover layers were excavated in the pits. They indicated that the full cover currently reduces the oxygen flux to 20 - 23 per cent of that into bare waste and that this reduction seems to be proportional to the cover thickness. It was also found that the oxygen flux into the cover is about four times higher at the end of the dry season than at the end of the wet season and that the difference is due primarily to the difference in moisture content of the cover. Recommendations are made for the design and construction of covers.

Assessing the uncertainty and risk in mineral resource estimation is required for best practice and is implied by the public reporting codes in the categorisation of mineral resources and reserves. One industry best practice is quantifying the risk on future production for a given period, which can be done using two geostatistical approaches: conditional simulation and drill hole spacing studies based on estimation variances. Conditional simulation can provide a more complete and flexible answer to the problem, but it takes a fair amount of time to complete. Drill hole spacing studies are simpler, faster and can provide reasonable assessments of mineral resource uncertainty.This paper is a presentation of the principles, theory and practice of drill hole spacing studies. Various types of risk assessment are considered. Difficulties encountered in practice are discussed, and solutions are proposed. The important parameters impacting the results are reviewed. Modern gold production from the Gympie Goldfield commenced in 1995 with the first production from the Monkland Mine. The primary ore target was the 2.5 m wide Inglewood Fault ore zone, which was initially mined using traditional narrow-vein shrink stoping. This manuallyintensive mining method allowed the mine to re-open with minimal capital cost, however the trade off was low productivity and high operating costs. As the mine has developed, access through 100-year-old, timber-lined, small shafts, and the high cost of delineating reserves, has restricted modernisation of the operations. In early-2000 a stockwork lode was discovered adjacent to the existing workings with an economic width of 40 m. In order to maximise the benefit of such an orebody, mining needed to be approached in a new way. This paper summarises the many changes implemented at the Monkland Mine, including the necessary cultural change, implementing long-hole stoping, de-bottlenecking and the application of mechanisation. The result has been a significant improvement in safety performance, higher productivity and a more secure future for all those involved in the project.

The Yinachang deposit in south-west China contains large amounts of Fe, Cu and rare earth elements (REEs). Apatite in this deposit records complex REE mineralisation and remobilisation processes.Fe-Cu-(REE) mineralisation at Yinachang occurred at ~1700 Ma, and three stages of alteration and mineralisation are identified: Na-(Fe) alteration, Fe-(REE) mineralisation and Cu-(REE) mineralisation. In the Fe-(REE) mineralisation stage, REE-rich apatite formed together with magnetite. In the Cu-(REE) mineralisation stage, fluids undersaturated with REEs interacted with early-formed REE-rich apatite, during which large proportions of REEs, especially light REEs (LREEs), were leached from apatite.At ~840 Ma, apatite experienced a second interaction with fluid. In that process, REEs were removed from the apatite structure but immediately reprecipitated into new phases within the apatite. Thus, numerous REE mineral inclusions including bastnaesite, monazite and minor Y-phosphate occur in the apatite. There are also a very small portion of LREEs that were transported out of the apatite, resulting in the growth of bastnaesite and monazite grains outside the apatite.This study demonstrates that REEs can be mobilised in multistage hydrothermal activities and highlights the significance of fluid compositions for REE transportation and deposition behaviours in hydrothermal systems.CITATION:Li, X and Zhou, M-F, 2015. In designing climate exposed soil structures such as caps and covers over mine waste it is necessary to include the wetting and drying influences of the local climate in order to accurately predict the net water, vapour and oxygen fluxes across the ground surface and through the base of the covers. The most advanced evaporative flux modelling tools currently available to practitioners have been limited to rigorous one-dimensional models (ie SoilCover) or semi-empirical two-dimensional models (ie Hydrus-2D). It is common practice to use the rigorous one-dimensional evaporative flux model results to develop a surface boundary function that can then be applied within a saturated/unsaturated two-dimensional model. However, this is not an ideal situation and results in a further approximation of the real system being modelled. This paper will highlight the use of a new modelling tool, VADOSE/W, which brings existing, rigorously formulated evaporative flux theory into the familiar setting of a two-dimensional model. The model is enhanced for simultaneous two-dimensional oxygen gas transport analysis, which has direct application in the mine waste industry. A key focus of the paper will be addressing the limitations of one-dimensional analysis for cover systems on sloping and hummocky terrain.

Gold and lesser copper mineralisation are associated with porphyry-related vein systems periph-eral to two separate inferred intrusive centres north of Kainantu, Papua New Guinea (PNG). The intersection of NW trending structures, formed parallel to the Markham Fault, with NE trending transfer structures localise porphyry intrusions, and control vein distrib-ution.The Arakompa veins intrude pre-existing fractures in Akuna granodiorite, located proximal to an inferred porphyry. These veins are characterised by early quartz and later pyrite-chalcopyrite. Gold mineralis-ation is associated with Bi-Te phases in the sulphide veining. At Maniape, en echelon gash veins occur within the imbricate portion of a regional structure. Maniape is a high level carbonate-base metal gold system formed distal to the same porphyry source as Z ?-;4 kmmna

Northern Star Resources (NSR) operates several seismically active mines as part of its Kalgoorlie Operations. In order to successfully continue mining at depth in increasing stress conditions, strategies need to be developed to reduce, control and manage the impact of seismicity causing damage to the rock mass. Consequently, a research partnership was developed with the WA School of Mines (WASM) through Mining3. The main aim of the project was to develop appropriate ground support standards that could withstand the expected dynamic response with minimal to no rehabilitation required for the life of that excavation. The project utilised a design methodology for determining the required energy demand based on detailed geotechnical mapping, probabilistic analysis of wedge formation and an estimate of rock ejection velocity based on uniaxial compressive strength of the intact rock (Villaescusa et al. 2016). The ground support scheme consists of high tensile chain link mesh, resin encapsulated de-coupled posimix bolts and plain strand cable bolts, in one, or multiple passes together with plain shotcrete. Implementation of the design posed several challenges including how to install the chain link mesh, maintaining the required productivity, ensuring quality control, and understanding the interaction of the several ground support components within the scheme. The implementation of the system within a trial area was successful from development mining to open stope extraction. The most significant field verification of the system occurred with near field M+1.9 seismic occurring in proximity to an operating long-hole drill. Despite large displacements exceeding 0.5m in places, there was no significant ejection of rock or failure of the ground support system. Following the successful trial, the ground support design methodology and standards have been implemented across several NSR sites. The system forms the basis for the successful extraction of resources in future high seismic risk areas.

The Cannington silver lead zinc deposit is located near Mt Isa in North West Queensland. This world class orebody is owned by BHP World Minerals (BHP) and is estimated to contain 45 million tonnes of ore at an average grade of 11 per cent lead, four per cent zinc and 500 grams/tonne silver. At BHPÆs planned 1.5 Mtpa extraction rate, the mine life will exceed 20 years. Construction of the underground mine, which commenced in August 1993, was carried out by Peabody Resources Ltd (Mining Services Division) (PRL) for BHP Minerals Pty Limited (BHP) under contract packages totalling approximately $100 M using several innovative techniques to deliver safety, quality and time related project goals. Client/Contractor Partnering, resulting in harmonious working relationships, a combined commitment to the achievement of an excellent safety record, and a seamless transition from the construction phase to operation of the mine, has been a feature of the project.

Chemical admixtures are not commonly included in the variety of backfill mixes used in the mining industry. This may be attributed to several reasons including, but not limited to: the perceived high added cost, 2. the lack of awareness about their proper use, and 3. the lack of knowledge about their features and benefits. In the construction industry today, however, chemical admixtures are used in the majority of the concrete produced, enabling concrete to become a more cost-effective building material. They also enable construction crews to meet demands for year-round construction, quicker completion of construction projects, and improved concrete properties. The high demand for chemical admixtures in the construction industry has led to numerous innovations in admixture technology in recent years. Some of these chemical admixtures have been found to enhance the production, transport, placement, and in situ properties of backfill mixes. Others have been found to reduce the cost of such mixes while maintaining, and in some cases improving, their physical properties. In this paper, a few of such innovative admixture technologies are discussed. The benefits, imparted by these technologies to backfill mixes as well as performance data on their use in several backfill applications at various mines, are presented.

A clay-capping trial was established in 1996 on Magazine Dump at the Mt Lyell Copper Mine. The trial was initially constructed under the Mount Lyell Remediation Research and Demonstration Program, a co-operative venture between the State and Federal governments. The detailed engineering design for the clay cover included the following features; reshaping and compaction of dump batters, 5 m vertical bench interval, overall side-slopes of 2.5:1, emplacement of clay in four 150 mm lifts, compaction by a 10 t vibrating roller or ætrack rollingÆ on batters with density testing for quality control. A small section at the base of the dump ( The trial also generated certain unexpected findings. Field permeability tests on the cover yielded uncertain results and oxygen remains available throughout the dump. The flow data indicate that, while total outflow has decreased as a result of storm shedding, inputs from groundwater and batter infiltration are still significant. Outflow during the driest weeks of the year may have risen following capping. Detailed assessment of the data is hampered by insufficient pre-capping information; however, there is a possibility that conductivity flux emitted when flows in the receiving environment are at their annual minimum is unchanged or worse post-capping.

The distribution of mineral deposits within northwestern North America (Alaska, Yukon, and northern British Columbia) allows for an in-depth examination of the metallogenic patterns of a growing continental margin. A more complete understanding of the tectonic evolution of this part of the Pacific Rim, achieved over the last 15 to 20 years, now allows for the placement of ore systems into a well-defined plate tectonic framework. Ore deposits older than about 185 Ma represent hydrothermal systems that were active in the platform/shelf environment of ancestral North AmericaÆs miogeocline or hydrothermal systems developed in oceanic arcs and continental fragments more distal to the craton. These include important SEDEX, VMS, and pre-accretionary porphyry deposits. In contrast, most mineral deposits younger than about 185 Ma were formed within the growing Cordilleran orogen, as terranes were accreted to the continental margin during interactions between the North America and Pacific/Farallon/Kula plates. Such syn- to post-accretionary mineralised systems include many large lode gold and porphyry/skarn systems.

Roasting of refractory gold ores has been a commercial process for many years. Improvements in design of fluidised bed roasting technologies and low capital and operating costs compared with other refractory treatment processes can potentially make roasting a viable option.However, gold extraction from roasted ores carried out on laboratory scale equipment often invariably yields lower recoveries than other processes such as bio-oxidation or pressure oxidation. Non-optimal laboratory roasting conditions can incorrectly write roasting off as a process option.Low gold recoveries from the cyanidation of calcine products from roasting can often be attributed to roasting conditions not favouring gold liberation and agglomeration processes, particularly if lockups of elements such as arsenic are being pursued for environmental reasons.This paper reviews the conditions favoured for gold agglomeration and accessibility of gold to cyanide, test conditions to achieve gold liberation and agglomeration on laboratory scale and designs that incorporate staged decomposition and roasting to make roasting a more commercial option.CITATION:Aylmore, M G and de Klerk, L W, 2013. One of the key aspects to develop sustainable metallurgical production is to ensure that the predictive power of thermodynamic tools is brought up to a new level of accuracy and reliability. Exploring new polymetallic processes, integrating primary and recycled materials, means utilising the uncharted areas within the Cu-Pb-Zn-Fe-Ca-Al-Mg-Si-O (major) – Cr-Na (slagging) – As-Sn-Sb- Bi-Ag-Au-Ni-Co (minor) slag-solids-metal-matte-speiss-sulfate system. This requires extensive integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling study, which is underway at PyroSearch at the University of Queensland (UQ).

In a coal mine there are many substances capable of ignition under certain circumstances, which can be placed in the following groups: ordinary combustible solids, dusts, liquids and vapours, gases, metals and plastics. There are many factors influencing ignition, including temperature, minimum ignition energy, particle size, explosion pressure level, rate of pressure rise, specific energy content and also explosive limit. Not all are applicable in every case. Frictional ignition of methane is an accident statistic of increasing concern and is considered in some detail. Practical measures that can be taken to reduce the incidence of frictional ignitions are considered, and also possible ways of ignition suppression.

The mineralogy of the crocidolite (blue asbestos) veins at Wittenoom Gorge was examined to determine the cause of failure to recover soma of the fibre by the ore-dressing methods currently being practised.
