Blast control in small scale underground mining leads to improved fragmentation control, improved control over overbreak and dilution, and the optimisation of drilling and charging operations. Greatly improved control can be achieved through blast monitoring, to confirm proper implementation of blast designs and blasthole charging. Further improvements can be achieved through simple modelling, enabling blastholes to be placed in the correct locations and charged with the correct weight and strength of explosive. Improved design can be shown to significantly reduce overbreak and dilution, and even ground support costs. In one mine in Quebec, open stopes of widths varying from 2.5 metres to four metres and dipping at 36¦ to 38¦ were designed to achieve zero dilution using open sloping blasting practices. The first stope designed in this manner was monitored in detail and achieved its objective.A method for contouring damage around blastholes is presented as a basis for selection of drilling patterns, with particular application to the control of overbreak and dilution. This paper compares different results for overburden volume estimation assisted by geoestatistics, particularly using kriging methods. The main goal is to obtain the most reliable digital terrain model for the calculation of the overburden volume. The data was collected on an irregularly spaced grid and interpolated values were calculated to provide a denser, more regular data set before volume estimation. The field work was developed at the Butia-Leste Coal Mine, southern most Brazil, where an accurate survey was done using a total station theodolite with electronic data collector. The study was developed in five main steps: data acquisition, exploratory data analysis, spatial continuity measurements, point and block kriging estimation and verification of the results. Data acquisition was carried out on a 5 x 5 in grid. This dense grid provides an exhaustive data set of the real terrain against which data subsets can be compared for the various interpolation procedures and volume calculation. This provides an interesting insight into the influence of the number of data on the estimation error. Univariate statistics were used to compare each data subset and the exhaustive dataset. Ordinary kriging on the data subsets followed by contouring was carried out using Geoeas and Surfer software respectively. A subroutine written in C provided the link between the files generated in Geoeas and subsequent contouring routines embedded into the Surfer package. Omnidirectional and directional variograms were modelled defining the parameters for kriging estimation using Geoeas. Different variogram models were checked through cross validation prior to kriging. A comparison between the magnitude of the differences in volumes calculated with the different DTMs was attained. These final result indicates the sensitivity of the volume obtained to the number of data points. As the number of data points increases the estimation error decreases, but at some point there is no significant decrease in the final volume with the collection of additional data.

Increasing concern with the emission of sulphur dioxide from smelters and roasters has caused renewed interest in processes which can use waste sulphur dioxide, such as the sulphation of nickel laterite ores. The process described here proposes to by-pass the production of sulphuric acid and react laterite directly with a sulphur dioxide containing atmosphere. A thermodynamic analysis identified operating windows in which nickel sulphate forms while iron oxide (the major impurity in most laterite ores) remains stable. The initial assumptions included unit activity of all species except nickel oxide. The lowest possible nickel oxide activity (while maintaining selectivity) increased with increasing temperature, indicating that selective sulphation is favoured by low temperatures. The temperature of interest was found to be between 500 and 800¦C. Calculations show that a feed gas containing ten per cent SO2, five per cent 02, balance N2 requires a temperature greater than 650¦C for selective sulphation of nickel. Laboratory experiments showed that the assumption of unit activity of ferric sulphate was unrealistic above about 680¦C due most likely to the formation of solid solutions which decreased the ferric sulphate activity. Results are presented which illustrate the limiting equilibrium sulphur trioxide partial pressures at 700 and 730¦C below which selective sulphation occurs. Cobalt extraction was usually between 80 and 95 per cent under conditions yielding selective sulphation, whilst nickel extraction was about 50 to 75 per cent depending on temperature and choice of upper limit of iron extraction. An operating diagram is presented for a limonite ore and shows that the optimum reaction conditions are 680¦C and an input gas containing 20 per cent SO2. Under these conditions nickel, cobalt and iron extractions are 73, 95 and two per cent respectively.

This paper documents the development of a user-friendly computational program, which has been constructed to assist the mine ventilation engineer in the optimal design and operation of methane drainage ranges. In the past, many computer tools for ventilation engineers led to the development of `research systems'. These computer systems, although developed with the needs of the industry in mind were due to a combination of inexperienced programming methods and the availability of suitable user interface software not easily accessible to the practising engineer. Recent developments in computer hardware and software (particularly windows based graphical user interfaces) mean that engineers no longer need to dedicate large amounts of valuable time to become familiar with often complex items of software. The authors of this paper intend to demonstrate a practical system which successfully integrates complex mathematical models, an easy to use interface and knowledge based techniques. The graphical interface guides the user to draw on the screen a mimic diagram representation of the methane drainage network. The user is prompted, during the construction of the drawing, to input the information and data required by the calculation and knowledge based procedures. The computer program then calculates all of the flows, purities and pressures throughout the network. Given reliable measured data from an existing range a comparative analysis can be performed between the predicted and measured network flow data. A knowledge-based system may utilise this analysis to either update the operational status of the network or suggest either a reasoned maintenance or remedial strategy to improve the performance of the drainage system. The development of the OMEN project has been carried out at the request of the Midlands Group, British Coal Corporation, Edwinstowe. The system is about to be field tested at a number of mines. It is hoped that when this paper is presented that the system will be used at both Group and mine level.

La Colosa, Colombia is a large gold-porphyry deposit currently undergoing feasibility studies by AngloGold Ashanti. This period of development allows the opportunity to apply innovative and emerging testing and modelling methods to provide a predictive geometallurgical recovery model for the deposit. By partnering with the AMIRA P843A Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling (GeMIII) research project, the geological and mineralogical data are analysed with respect to liberation and recovery methods. This will allow the variability in the geology and mineralogy of the deposit and key relationships recognised in the data to be included in the development of a model to help predict recoveries of the gold. Many aspects of the gold mineralisation such as gold paragenesis, associations, grain size and texture are determined and analysed using optical microscopy, Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA), and laser ablation (LA-ICP-MS). At La Colosa the gold has been located in sulfides (eg pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite), silicates, along silicate phase boundaries, and among the pyrite-rich intermediate argillic alteration. Further testing and analysis will also determine if ‘invisible’ gold is present in the pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite. Recovery methods can also be determined and tested after combining the results of mineralogy tests with other data (eg results of comminution tests). Indices for the mineralisation and recovery are developed using image analysis and analytical testing. These indices are correlated with recovery data from the company to develop a predictive block model for recovery. The goal is to develop cost-effective, efficient methods to analyse the mineralogy and geology of the deposit; understand the variability in the mineralogy, geology, and recovery; and construct a predictive geometallurgical recovery model.

Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) manages eleven mines in the Pilbara region, Western Australia. Three of these mines have previously or are currently mining black shale that contains varying amounts of pyrite. Several new deposits currently being evaluated and existing mines that may progress below water table in the future, will also encounter this waste material. The black shale presents not just an acid rock drainage risk but also a spontaneous combustion risk. This paper presents the black shale management strategy and provides an overview of the relevant activities undertaken by RTIO. The strategy can be divided into two components which firstly involve defining the risk and secondly involve managing the risk. The mineral waste management plan is used to identify specific mineral waste hazards by:geochemical characterisation of waste material,undertaking mine site specific risk assessments,characterising the receiving environment,identifying sulfidic boundaries in geological and mining models,quantifying the amount of sulfidic material in medium and long-term mine plans, anddesigning and sequencing black shale waste dumps. Once a mine exposes black shale the Spontaneous Combustion and Acid Rock Drainage management plan is used and the major activities are: regular site meetings with a representative from every group that works with black shale;compliance with safe working procedures for site specific and detailed activities;regular training;the use of specific explosives to prevent premature detonation;ongoing geochemical characterisation;acid water management, monitoring and analysis;regular internal and external auditing of procedures and practices; andclosure planning assessments and preparations (ie cover trials, geochemical void modelling, geochemical waste dump modelling). The success of this holistic strategy is evident by the awareness of personnel within the business, thorough understanding of the geochemistry and by undertaking proactive management of black shale during mining. The strategy and management plans adopted by Rio Tinto Iron Ore have activities that other mine sites with potentially acid forming material may like to consider implementing.

Geotechnical investigations have played a key role in influencing decisions for development of the Porgera Gold Project in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Porgera is located 130 km west-northwest of Mt. Hagen in steep mountainous terrain with high rainfall. Much of the site is underlain by weak mudstone of the Chim Formation and creeping colluvial soils. Landsliding is common on the steeper slopes and in the valley floors. Structures have had to be sited to avoid areas susceptible to these movements. Early stage feasibility investigations included studies of tailings dam and waste rock dump sites, processing plant sites and hydroelectriic schemes. Further studies, leading into the design stage included the Enga Highway upgrading, water supply and power supply schemes. As construction for the project proceeds geotechnical input remains at a high level, with emphasis now on maintaining viable stable sites and refining data on which designs were based.

The Mount Carlton project in Queensland's North East sits on a high-sulphidation epithermal style deposit rich in gold, copper and silver. Mt Carlton is an open pit mining operation with ore processed using a primary crusher, single stage SAG mill and flotation to produce a concentrate for sale. Orway Mineral Consultants (OMC) was involved in the original design of the comminution circuit and the project was commissioned in late 2012, with first concentrate shipped in March 2013. When Evolution sought to optimise the project in 2015, OMC was invited to assist by undertaking a circuit review to identify opportunities for the optimisation. During 2016, the Mt Carlton site team implemented the optimisation strategies developed in conjunction with OMC. These included reconfiguring the SAG mill discharge arrangement, reducing the average ball diameter and allowing the mill to operate at higher speed and under more autogenous conditions. Cyclone operation was changed to constant pressure and the vortex finder size was decreased. The combined strategies improved energy efficiency and allowed higher SAG mill power utilisation. The additional power has been used to increase throughput by 2.4 per cent while achieving a 27µm reduction in product size (P80) to gain downstream recovery improvements. The reduction in grind size has been achieved with only 6.8 per cent increase in specific energy consumption because of a 6.5 per cent increase in grinding efficiency. The circuit product size is also notably more consistent due to the improvements made to the cyclones, providing benefit to the downstream flotation circuit. A significant decrease in ball consumption was also gained, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in operating cost.This paper will discuss the circuit design, start up and will detail the changes made during the optimisation and why these were successful.CITATION:Putland, B, Lovatt, I, Cervillin, A and Schwann, D, 2018. The acid mine drainage (AMD) situation at three opencast collieries in the Witbank Coalfield, South Africa, was evaluated from different perspectives. Twenty-seven test pits were dug into the spoils of these collieries to characterise the in situ conditions of spoils of varying age. Detailed static testing was done on surrounding drill holes and additional samples were taken from the test pits. Selected samples were tested using different techniques, namely ABA, mineralogy and kinetic tests. Groundwater monitoring boreholes from the areas surrounding these spoils were also used for characterisation. The ABA results compared favourably with the in situ determinations; acidic test pits proved to be potentially acid-generating from ABA, even when the samples had neutral paste pH. Kinetic test results showed these samples to yield low pH leachate over the test period. In several of these results, the theoretical depletion of neutralising potential and the onset of acidity were well matched. NAG pH-values and final observed water chemistry corresponded for the cells predicted by ABA to acidify, but compared poorly in cells that did not acidify. Results from the non-acidic spoils were consistent with the in situ observations. Alternative kinetic test methodologies were also employed. Duplicate samples were tested in humidity cells and in aerated trays that were manually wetted on a regular basis. Results from these tests showed an excellent correlation. Detailed mineralogical determinations using XRD and XRF were used for comparison to the ABA and, in some cases, humidity cell results. These comparisons show that the ABA results are consistent with the results expected from the mineralogy. The conclusion from these assessments is that ABA, in most cases, provides information that can be correlated to the field, mineralogy and to humidity cells. The use of multiple techniques leads to a higher degree of confidence in the use of the data.

The shock behaviour of a material represents its response to very high strain rate loading at pressures associated with those generated by explosive and blasting loadings. Three sets of shock wave experiments have been conducted to determine shock Hugoniot behaviour, spall tensile strength and shear strength using a plate impact facility. Embedded manganin stress gauges (ie longitudinal and lateral gauges) and high-speed velocimetry using heterodyne techniques were used for the measurements of stresses, shock velocity and free surface velocity. The gabbro exhibited classic linear Hugoniot equations of state in the US-up (ie shock velocity-particle velocity) plane; while for marble a polymer-like non-linear response was observed. The detailed experimental procedures used to make these measurements are to a great extent standard methods when determining mechanical properties and deformation fields at high strain rate.CITATION:Zhang, Q B and Zhao, J, 2015. The sinter plant at the Sulphide Corporation's Cockle Creek works produces a feed for the company's Imperial Smelting Furnace. The feed contains lead and zinc oxides and all the fluxes necessary for furnace operation. The quality of this feed is a major factor in furnace performance and the considerable flexibility of operation possible at the sinter plant has been used in efforts to achieve optimum operating conditions.Operating data is processed daily and information gathered from this source has led to three of the four improvements described.These improvements have resulted from elimination of gas recirculation, reduction of sinter returns sizing and alteration of ignition conditions and main layer fuel loading.

Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd is currently developing the 'Super Pit' gold mine in the mining area known as the Golden Mile adjacent to the city of KalgoorlieBoulder, Western Australia. The presence of numerous abandoned mine workings and complex structural geology has required considerable geotechnical input into the determination of the optimum pit slope geometries for both interim and ultimate pit slopes. Slope design is based on detailed site investigation and stability analysis which is balanced with historical operational experience. This paper discusses the process of determining the optimum pit slope angles for each of the stages of the west wall of the 'Super Pit'. The risks associated with slope instability are discussed for each stage.

Questionnaires were sent to 12 underground metalliferous mines in Queensland to enquire how these mines control diesel emissions from mobile diesel engines used underground. Where responses or controls were absent, discussion has been provided. A significant finding concerns secondary ventilation design rates. Some mines were designing ventilation rates to meet the superseded Mines Regulation Act of 1989 which required 0.04 m3/s/kW. The current Queensland Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Regulation (2001) is risk based. In line with other jurisdictions, including New South Wales (NSW) and most Provinces in Canada, a minimum ventilation rate of 0.06 m3/s/kW is acceptable. However, this design ventilation rate will vary in practice depending on the diesel engines and controls. Dedicated ventilation engineers and technicians should be appointed to evaluate the effectiveness of the ventilation system. Personal exposure monitoring is required to confirm that exposure standards are not being exceeded. The primary control practice should be to reduce the emission at source. This can be ensured by purchasing low emission (Tier 2, Tier 3) equipment. In addition, the use of ultra low sulfur fuel (et al, 2002). Diesel fuel with a low aromatic content such as Eromanga diesel fuel will also mean employees are exposed to lower levels of poly-cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These controls should be carried out in parallel with good maintenance practices. Preventative maintenance should be programmed and emissions be routinely tested, including both gaseous and particulate pollutants and compared against defined criteria. According to McGinn, 2002, there are a number of fundamental tools necessary to carry out preventative maintenance. These are outlined in maintenance guidelines and best practices for diesel engines in underground mining produced for the Diesel Emissions Evaluation Program (DEEP). An effective diesel emission management system needs to be fully integrated within the Safety and Health Management System. These requirements are further discussed in this paper.

Scientific knowledge of Mars’ surface morphology and internal geological structure has been accumulated through satellite imagery and numerical topographic data using remote sensing technology, as well as seismic surveys by the on-site lander. Recent studies show that Marsquakes could be caused by the release of strain energy generated by the contraction of Mars. In particular, Marsquakes occur around the graben where many faults are existed and formed regularly spaced patterns. This implies that Marsquakes occur when the stress field of the Martian crust is an extension condition, and normal faults appear on the surface. We focus on the linear relationship between the fault spacing and the thickness of the mechanical layer as an approach to studying the internal structure from satellite images. Mechanical layer is a layer that composes of the same mechanical properties and is mainly bounded by lithology (Narr, 1991; Gross, 1993). The linear relationship between the thickness of the mechanical layer and the joint spacing has been studied and its slope is called the Fracture-Spacing Index (FSI) (Narr and Suppe, 1991). Soliva, Benedicto and Maerten (2006) showed that the stress drop zone (stress shadow) due to the fault activities affects the fault spacing. Figure 1 shows the approach used to estimate the thickness of the mechanical layer from the fault spacing on Mars. This paper aims to better understand the internal mechanical structure of Mars estimated by the geometrical pattern of faults on the Martian surface. We report the initial studies of this work. The lab-scale physical experiments and numerical experiments were presented to demonstrate the relationship between the thickness of the mechanical layer and the geometric pattern of fractures

Six new IsaMills were installed for the George Fisher flowsheet in the Lead/Zinc Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines to produce a product P80 as fine as seven microns. The objective was better liberation of galena and sphalerite. The IsaMill commissioning was completed by the end of 1999. The six new IsaMills were running to the metallurgical specifications almost immediately after start-up. This paper reports the performance of the George Fisher IsaMills in the zinc circuits and some of the latest development in the IsaMill designs and maintenance during George Fisher commissioning.

Existing practical laboratory tests for comparative strength determination of commercial explosives consist of the lead block test, the ballistic mortar test, the bubble test etc. These tests are carried out in material with quite different properties compared to rock. The theoretical performance potentials of commercial explosives are traditionally described by weight-strength (WS). Some explosive producers use the Langefors formula for weight-strength calculation, where also the gas volume is considered. Neither the theoretical nor the practical methods for determination of explosive performance such as the above, give good enough prediction of fragmentation and heave in rock blasting. For these reasons a project was started for the purpose of finding a small scale test method which predicts how different explosive parameters affect fragmentation and heave. Small scale tests were carried out by using 50 cm cubical blocks, mainly of concrete, but a few also of rock. All blocks were blasted in a steel cylinder with a diameter of 1.2 meters. The velocity of detonation was monitored, and the velocity of fragments was derived from their time of arrival at the steel wall, which was registered by accelerometers. After blasting all fragments were screened. The charge diameter was 22 mm and the amount of explosive 78 grammes, resulting in a specific charge of 0.62 kg/m3. Explosive properties such as energy, gas, VOD and density were systematically changed.The results presented in this paper show how fragmentation and heave systematically change when the explosive properties like energy, gas, VOD and density are systematically changed. The results from the small scale tests are compared to full scale tests carried out in tunnel blasting, and during summer 1990 also in bench blasting.

Molten salt reactor (MSR) is a promising advanced reactor system aiming to the transmutation of minor actinides such as americium in order to reduce the inventory of ultimate nuclear waste. The fuel is a molten salt in which actinides are homogeneously dissolved in the liquid phase. A chloride salt may be retained for this concept, as it provides low melting point, high solubility of actinides, harder neutron spectrum. To avoid corrosion and precipitation issues, molten salt composition has to be carefully controlled with impurity content as low as possible. Obtaining pure actinide chlorides without contaminants such as oxide, oxychloride, hydroxide and water is still a challenge. To prepare actinide-bearing salt, the chlorination of actinides oxides was investigated in an unstirred reactor under flowing gas as solid-gas reaction. The carbochlorination of PuO2 were performed in the temperature range of 600 to 800°C with chlorine gas as a chlorinating agent and the presence of solid carbon. PuCl3 was successfully synthesised by this method and characterised by X-ray diffraction measurements but some impurities such as oxide phase remain inside the formed product. Refinements of anhydrous and hydrated PuCl3 phases by Le Bail method were also performed for crystalline materials definition. Conversion mainly depends on the chlorinating temperature and the contact between the oxide and the chlorinating agent. A conversion value of 70–80 per cent was achieved at 700°C from PuO2 with quite high specific surface area. The conversion rate was not improved with increasing the chlorination time. The volatilisation of Pu was observed during the carbochlorination experiments. To avoid a loss of Pu caused by sublimation, the chlorination temperature should be limited to 650°C despite that the conversion of PuO2 to PuCl3 was enhanced by increasing temperature. Both carbochlorination and hydrochlorination of AmO2 were also carried out leading to the formation of AmCl3. These first results suggest that americium oxide was chlorinated more readily than plutonium oxide. The purity of produced PuCl3 and AmCl3 still deserves further investigations.

Over the last 15 years working in the mining, construction and extractive industries, one of the areas that has always concerned and at the same time drawn the author to it is the application of drilling and blasting in the underground development mining and civil construction tunnelling fields. In that time, the author has come across many drives and tunnels that are larger than design or badly damaged in the perimeter or both. When the question is asked as to why this is the case, the reply is generally æthatÆs the way it is and always has beenÆ. Sometimes it is blamed on bad ground, bad drilling, bad explosives, bad initiation or just plain bad. Most operators build a dilution factor into development and tunneling costs as an acceptance of overbreak and similarly pattern bolt everything to overcome excessive perimeter damage. This paper will attempt to unravel some of the mysteries behind perimeter drilling and blasting in underground drives and tunnels and discuss methods to reduce overbreak and therefore reduce costly dilution and to minimise perimeter damage which in turn will allow more cost-effective ground support. It should not be assumed that better drilling and blasting alone would automatically allow an operation to reduce ground support. The operator must still æreadÆ the ground and its characteristics in order to ensure sufficient ground support is placed to allow the operation to progress safely. This paper will not go into the intricacies of bolting, meshing, shotcreting, concreting and other ground support, but it will use indicative costs for the primary areas of drilling, explosives, excavation and labor to show the magnitude of cost-efficiencies which can be obtained through improved drilling and blasting applications. Drill and blast remains the most flexible and cost-effective method of underground excavation as long as it is applied safely and effectively.

A method of selective gold recovery from black sands has been elaborated which is based on the liquid phase low temperature chlorination of materials. A liquid agent mixture of sulphur monochloride S2C12 and sulphur dichloride SC12 is used. This method ensures the gold extraction either in the state of AuC13.SC14 complex salt solution or as metal. The kinetics and main physico-chemical parameters of the process (eg density, solid: liquid ratio, temperature) have been investigated. The materials investigated were quartz-insipid ride samples with low sulphur and high iron (up to 70 per cent Fe2O3) contents. Gold recovery is 96 - 99 per cent at temperatures not exceeding 100¦C. Most of the associated minerals remain in the cake. To obtain metallic gold, the resulting solution of the AuC13.SC14 salt after leaching is reduced by hydrazine with subsequent annealing. The elaborated method is remarkable for small energy expenditures owing to low process temperature and a high gold dissolution rate. The solution of sulphur chlorides and other reagents are used in closed cycle.

Decline shafts are an attractive option to both new and existing mining operations where there is a need to access an inclined orebody deposit via on-reef development so as to generate a return in the shortest possible time. There are many different technologies that are available to transport men, material and rock in incline shafts. This paper focuses on the applicability of two hoisting technologies for decline shafts, namely endless and direct rope systems. The pros and cons of each system are reviewed. A common concern with direct rope haulage systems is the possibility of generating slack rope during deceleration.
