Mine geologists have access to an economic mineral deposit, production parameters and secure exploitation title. They are well placed to understand ore formation and should contribute to the effective exploration of company mine property. Application of their special skills has been curbed by pre-occupation with production duties and by company re-engineering, including staff reductions. Contributions to exploration have been diminished and personal development inhibited. Modified management is required. Participation in mineral system studies and in exploration research comprise part of the basis for the re-emergence of mine geologists on the exploration scene. Changes in investment strategies in the minerals industry may create new employment opportunities. With regard to estimation of resources and reserves, the competence of practitioners who are incapable of disclosing their methods in transparent terms is under question. Ethical standards are also under public scrutiny because of some notable malpractice. Independent auditing may hecome more intrusive. While understandable in a market context, it reflects poorly on the profession. More substantial effort in public communications can improve the credihility ofthe industry and equip practising mine ceolouists for snider responsihility.

In recent years a large number of Horizontal Belt Filters have been installed in the Australian mining and chemical industries. This paper deals briefly with the general background and advantages leading to the selection of this type of filter. Acoustic Emission structural integrity evaluation tests rely on the validity of the detected acoustic emission data and the ability of the practitioner to both analyse and interpret the data to make a correct decision on the future use of the structure tested. Unfortunately with acoustic emission surveillance testing, it is not possible to know that all the available data has been assessed property. The equipment sensitivity, threshold settings, and event capture capacity, when combined with the decision making ability of the operator in real time, make it very difficult to achieve reliable integrity evaluation. The main problem is to interpret the data and so any monitoring system should involve expert systems in conjunction with both acoustic emission and other operational monitoring data to maximise the utilisation of the large amounts of information now available from operating plants, mines and structures.

The Directional Drill Monitor (DDM) is an advanced instrument for real time in hole surveying. It was developed by Du Pont (Australia) to suit Australian gassy coal mining conditions. The instrument consists of three units: i. Down hole transmitter ii. Acoustic transducer iii. Data receiver processor unit (i.e. up hole unit). This paper describes the function of each unit in detail and highlights the importance of the DDM in long hole drilling efficiency. Surveying is carried out independent of hole depth. Each survey takes 2-3 minutes to complete, the frequency of surveying to control borehole trajectory is determined by the accuracy required for a particular hole.

The aim of the paper was to model numerically some aspects of the extraction of coal pillars by split and fendering. A two-dimensional elasto-plastic plane strain model with strain softening and interface mod- elling was used. The model was able to simulate the improvement of conditions experienced in lifting from the fender, when the roof adjacent to the fender has caved. In contrast, when a stook was left, providing support to a span of uncaved roof, the model pre- dicted the fender would suffer considerably more de- formation and strain.

Although there are sound principles used in the world recognised methods of gas emission prediction, results based on these methods applied to several Australian longwall extractions have yielded unacceptably high discrepancies. With the development of mining in new seams and at higher rates of extraction, the need has grown for a methodical approach to predicting gas emission levels specifically for local Australian mining conditions. Such an approach is developed from results of recorded emission readings during longwall mining at Appin and Pacific Collieries over the past 6 years.

The Morobe Goldfield in Papua New Guinea has produced in excess of 120 tonnes of gold from predominantly alluvial sources. Hardrock gold has been mined historically at Wau (23t) and Edie Creek (40 and geological resources have been established at Hidden Valley (780, Kerimenge (360 and Hamata (30t). Numerous prospects have also been identified within the goldfield. Primary gold mineralisation is related to intrusion of dacitic to andesitic Edie Porphyry (2.4 to 3.8 Ma), often with associated diatremes, which have intruded along major regional structures. A full spectrum of deposit styles from proximal (mesothermal) to distal (epithermal) to the porphyry source is recognised. The transition between the proximal and distal styles is recognised both between deposits and within an individual deposit. The deposit styles should be termed porphyry related gold mineralisation rather than given the generic epithermal and mesothermal labels.

Mathematical modelling was carried out to determine the probable convergence and vertical stress patterns around a retreating longwall panel in an underground coal mine in New South Wales. An 'Electrical Resistance Analogue' and a program called 'THREED' based on the displacement discontinuity method were used for the modelling. Parts of the obtained results are presented here and compared with some measurements of convergence at the site. The modelled and measured data agree better qualitatively, than quantitatively.

Among the solutions currently being considered for improving traffic flow in Sydney are the construction of major road tunnels, principally the Eastern Distributor Tunnels, leading from the end of the Cahill Expressway to Drivers Triangle and South of Taylor Square and the Sydney Harbour Tunnel, which incorporates sections of driven tunnel at the northern and southern sides of the harbour. The Eastern Distributor Tunnels, known as Stages 2 and 3 of the Eastern Distributor Scheme comprise: Stage 2 - A south bound two lane tunnel from north of William Street to Driver's Triangle. The southern end includes two Y junctions (locally 3 to 4 lane widths) with exits into South Dowling Street, Anzac Parade and Moore Park Road. Stage 3 - A north bound, two lane tunnel from Taylor Square to Palmer Street just north of William Street. Further details of the Eastern Distributor Tunnels are given in the paper by Baxter, Chappel and Fishburn (1986) which is included in this conference.

Samples have been taken from a two-stage industrial gold roaster treating a pyrite/pyrrhotite/arsenopyrite concentrate, in order to describe the mineralogy, composition and surface area of the calcines. Sulphides oxidised to produce a porous magnetite in the first stage and a porous hematite in the second; pyrite predominantly roasted via a pyrrhotite intermediate. Sulphur was eliminated in both the first and second stages whereas arsenic was eliminated in the first but retained in the second, partly as rims on hematite particles. The finer sized particles from the cyclones and electrostatic precipitator, while having the greatest surface area, were the most refractory with respect to gold solubilisation, probably as a result of incomplete decomposition (through short-circuiting) in the first stage, and through a combination of factors such as overheating and entrapment of sub-microscopic gold in the second stage.

Mining, like most other businesses, is based upon capital assets; and the primary cap- ital of any mining company is its ore reserve. A company's survival and growth is, thus, dep- endent upon its ability to replace, increase, redistribute and to diversify its ore reserves. A Kennecott executive addressing a group of geologists in 1957 stated, "Management expects a geologist to find ore! That is the primary objective and the justification of the geologist in the minerals industry. There is no other function that we can rationalize." This is, however, a restricted point of view, and one which I an sure is not fully shared by mining executives or mine operators at the present time. Ore reserves are 'made' as well as 'found' and the geologist contributes to this process. A mining geologist engages in activity in- volving the study of geology in connection with the total mining operation. His major task is the adaption of geological knowledge of ore de- posits and rock behaviour to mining needs, and the application of principles of the science of geology to specific problems of finding, develop- ing and extracting of ore bodies.

The problem of instantaneous outbursts remains unsolved after over a century of events and the investigation of the mechanism of the phenomenon and means of treating it. Outbursts have occurred of up to 5,000 tonnes with perhaps up to 500,000 m3 of accompanying gas, either methane (CH4) or carbon dioxide (C02) or mixtures. The low density of CH4 and the high density of CO2 give particular problems. Australia with both gases has experienced outbursts for 85 years with fatalities as recent as 1978. The Bulli Seam of the Illawarra area of the Sydney Basin is affected and outbursts with both CH4 and CO2 occur. The Northern and Central Bowen Basin also experiences outbursts with both gases. Proneness of affected mines is related to the high rank of the'coal and the proneness of the seams-is localised according to depth, gassiness, structure and development geometry. Proneness may be reduced by appropriate choice of mining methods. In addition to outbursting mines other mines have symptomatic phenomena. Traditional preventive methods have been used and control by induce- ment has been practised. Grade control is an important factor in the on-going success of a mining operation. Grade control criteria will vary depending on the commodity being mined. Financial considerations determine the actual grade control criteria at any one mine site. Mining and metallurgical capital and operating costs are ultimately used in ascertaining cut-off grades employed in grade control. The metallurgical characteristics of the ore, and ultimately the equipment selection and design of the plant, are based on samples provided by the exploration geologist. Ore variability is an important factor in designing the process plant. Ore variations, outside of those catered for in the design, as well as large ore changes on a daily basis, will impact on the metallurgical performance, and hence the economics of a mining operation. Therefore good liaison between the grade control geologist and metallurgist will undoubtedly lead to a more consistent, and more profitable mining operation.

The cost of production from truck and loader fleets is influenced by management development of the culture of the organisation, work practices, systems and procedures of the production and maintenance teams. Establishing if the cost of production is the best that can be achieved then requires the measurement of results against established standards of performance. This paper provides a series of discussion points of the factors that influence the cost of production from men and machines for large scale open pit mining operation and provides some suggested performance standards in the form of Benchmarks. Most of the references have been drawn from established large scale deep pit mines in USA, Canada and Australia which have had to implement and constantly fine tune cost efficiencies in order to survive. The discussion provides:ò a review of priorities or the relative importance of the various cost elements for a mining system;ò suggestions of systems and procedures for the operation and maintenance of machines which are considered to yield the best overall results;ò examples of operations that have developed and implemented management systems and controls that are achieving good results in specific functions; andò suggested benchmarks of performance.

"Inrush of water is always an issue, especially for mines located in heavy rainfall areas. Nowadays, mining companies and research institutes have developed many advanced technologies for study and analysis of hydrological processes. In this paper, an advanced method is introduced, which uses the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission Digital Elevation Model (SRTM DEM) data in the Geographical Information System (GIS) platform to simulate the stream distributions around two specific mines: Super Pit and Griffin coalmine in Western Australia. The impact of this approach is important because it reduces the time and economic cost by creating a high spatial resolution hydrological map in the specific areas. The study identifies the flow path of the run-off water, which helps in adopting a suitable water management plan surrounding the case study mines. The results match with the ground reality. Based on the results, the stream structure around Griffin coalmine is more complicated than that of Super Pit. The bifurcation ratio and drainage density are computed to estimate the subsoil permeability characteristics of the two mines. Roof conditions at Southern Colliery, the second longwall mine to be established at German Creek, were found to be much stronger and more massive than at the earlier longwall mine on the lease. Investigations were made to ascertain the level of face support required for longwall extraction under the changed geological conditions. Geotechnical information was provided from drillholes and highwall exposures. Downhole geophysical logs, notably the sonic velocity log, were used to obtain a distribution of the major lithological units over the mine area. A representative type section of the strata and geomechanical properties was compiled to form the basis for numerical modelling. Two-dimensional finite element methods were used to predict strata movements and chock loads under cantilevered roof conditions. The model incorporated a 6.3 in thick roof beam either bonded or detached, with either a 2 in or 5 in overhang. The solid rib, immediate roof, chock support and goaf were modelled as distinct parts, in addition a front abutment stress profile, derived from three-dimensional displacement-discontinuity analysis, was superimposed on the model.

The variation in coal properties and the coal seam reduced level can be analysed using partial trend-surface analysis techniques. For the area studied seam reduced level and seam thickness data from the Bulli Coal yield trend-surfaces with a high coefficient of determination, since they have relatively small systematic local and random components in their overall variation. Sulphur content appears to have no significant re.gi_onal trend, and phosphorus content has a very weak regional trend. Other analytical variables have regional trends which are of intermediate strength. The strike-directions of.the statistically significant first degree! trend-surface are similar, sug-gesting.: that the variation of the several coal properties was controlled by a set of- related causes.
