The reduction of small, dense zinc oxide (ZnO) samples in CO/CO2, and CO/N2 gas mixtures has been investigated at temperatures between 900 and 1100¦C. The microstructural characterisation of the reacted and partially reduced samples was complemented with measurements of the rates of the reactions. The mechanisms and kinetics of reduction of zinc oxide were found to be dependent upon the CO partial pressure, the oxygen potential of the gas mixtures, temperature and degree of reduction.

In recent years the need to provide increased ventilation to improve environmental conditions rather than to dilute firedamp has led to increasing interest in the use of recirculation. Present UK mining law prohibits recirculation in ventilation, but it has been permitted selectively by exemption granted by Hm Inspectorate of Mines and Quarries. The conditions of use imposed by these exemptions to safeguard the safety and health of miners are examined in detail, dealing separately with primary and auxiliary recirculation systems.

A series of field experiments investigated the perfonnance of fine mesh curtain screens which were used to suppress coal dust in a transport roadway of a New South Wales colliery. Four types of screens were tested under dry and wet conditions. The screen materials consisted of flyscreen and garden "shadecloth" with single and double membranes of both materials. Personal dust samplers coupled to dust cyclones and filtration cassettes were used to collect the respirable and total components of dusts respectively. The procedure used for locating the samplers upstream and downstream of the screen was based on the roadway air velocity profiles. The number and configuration of the water sprays impinging onto these screens had significant influence on the results. The study showed that wet double layered flyscreen is the most effective of the four configurations tested.

The manufacture of steel from raw materials which have to be mined, transported and processed must affect the environment. Steelmaking, like almost every other stage of manufacture involves the unwanted production of dust and fume; thus a major part of the steel industry's effort to minimize changes to the environment is the collection, treatment and recycling of dust and fume to avoid pollution of the atmosphere and waterways. The paper describes how this achieved in the various steelmaking processes and shows the diversity of problems-and their solutions in this context. Particular emphasis is, given to basic oxygen steelmaking.

The BIOX« process for the treatment of refractory gold ores and concentrates has been commercially in operation for 18 years. A total of six BIOX« operations have been successfully commissioned since the commercialisation of the process. Four of these BIOX« plants are still in operation today. There has been a renewed interest in the process the past few years with two BIOX« plants, the Suzdal plant in Kazakhstan and the Fosterville plant in Australia, scheduled for commissioning during 2004. Four new projects are also in various stages of development and are currently scheduled to be commissioned during 2005 and 2006. Research into the process are currently focussed on the two highest operating cost items for the commercial operations, namely power for agitation and air dispersion and cyanide consumption during leaching. Laboratory aeration and agitation testwork using the A340 up-pumping agitation system has shown that similar mass transfer rates can be achieved at slightly higher agitator power. The up-pumping system, however, eliminates the need for a separate blower and sparger system as air is introduced into the slurry from the slurry surface. The use of the thermophile bacteria as the final oxidation step during biooxidation has shown great promise. Reductions in cyanide consumption of up to 50 per cent were achieved when using the combination mesophile and thermophile process compared to standard BIOX« product solids. The combined process takes advantage of the milder oxidising conditions of the well known BIOX« process for the bulk of the oxidation and then uses the high temperature thermophile bacteria to complete the oxidation. The ASTERÖ process for the biological degradation of cyanide and thiocyanate containing effluent solutions has been proven to be efficient and stable. The process uses an activated sludge system with a residence time of approximately six hours in the sludge reactor. Heavy metals and metal cyanide species have also been shown to be removed successfully from solution.

A review of ground control procedures in Western Australian underground mines is presented. Geotechnical input into initial mine design and methods of ground control is rare. As a result, the frequency of unexpected rockfalls is comparatively high, with over three quarters of the mines adopting non-specialist ground control designs experiencing unexpected falls-of-ground. In contrast, mines that provide some level of specialist input into initial ground control design experience decreased rockfall frequencies.

Elastomeric compression gaskets for segmental tunnel liners are capable of fulfilling all sealing requirements for one pass constructed tunnels.Once the segments are mounted and the gaskets are compressed the watertightness of the tunnel is guaranteed at once and for the whole technical life time.The only prerequisite for effective sealing is that tolerances in the tunnel segments be kept within reasonable limits.

The original leases making up today's North Kalgurli Mines were developed by independent companies on an ad hoc basis. The major disadvantage which now arises is the varying levels of mining horizons. From Kalgurli Shaft in the south, through main Shaft and to Croesus Shaft in the north, there are three separate sets of levels. work has commenced to link the three areas with either common levels or new development which will facilitate common access and haulage via Main Shaft.Generally, the workings at North Kalgurli were established at the turn of the century. The introduction of techniques and equipment to bring the mine into the 20th Century has been difficult and slow. The general size of openings, a widespread workforce and complex ore distribution often make innovation and change more than a challenge.

Broken Hill South Limited's discovery of phosphate deposits in the northwest of Queensland in 1966 prompted intensive exploration which has proved phosphate rock in excess of 2,000 million tons at ten separate deposits.Systematic exploration for phosphate in Australia was initiated by the company in 1964. Early in 1966, an investigation of oil wells in the Georgina Basin in the Northern Territory and Queensland revealed widespread anomalous phosphate in early Middle Cambrian Beetle Creek Formation and Thorntonia Limestone. Phosphorites recognized in oil wells in the southeastern part of the Basin, Queensland, led to the discovery of the Duchess deposits. Exploration of the Beetle Creek Formation since 1966 has disclosed nine other sizeable deposits north of Duchess around the eastern margin of the Basin. The Lady Annie and the adjoining Lady Jane deposits, by reason of their location, 160 miles south of the Gulf of Carpentaria, are expected to be the first to be brought into production.Beneficiation testing and engineering investigations commenced in 1967. Transport between the deposits and various port sites in the Gulf of Carpentaria has been extensively studied and a slurry pipeline as a means of transport to a deep water island port, is now being investigated.

The gold-scheelite-quartz lodes of the Wakamarina valley were the most productive of the mesothermal gold-bear in the Marlborough Schist. Most of the production came from the Empire City and Golden Bar mines which worked tug, Golden Bar lode. Only 134 m of its 1800 m strike length are accessible, in the No. 2 level of the Golden Bar Mine. A fau I has downthrown the Golden Bar Mine section by 2 47 m and displaced it left-laterally by 18 m. The lode is a typical ribbon-banded mesothermal vein, averaging c. 1.75 m wide, and enclosing narrow horses of schist country rock. It i composed of bands of milky "buck" quartz with thin laminae of schist. Scheelite occurs in short strings of grains withi quartz on the footwall side of the lode and also in small quartz-carbonate veinlets in the foot wall and hanging wall schist The lode quartz contains only localised traces of pyrite and arsenopyrite. They are more abundant in the wall-rock schist.

The aim of this work is to assess the performance of different constructive solutions against explosions on the strength of masonry walls. The solutions tested, namely an external metal mesh, a glass fibre film on the external face of the wall and a basalt fibre film located on the inner face of the wall, have low to medium cost and are originally designed for other purposes, like seismic protection. Four cubic boxes 3 × 3 × 3 m were built using each of the solutions and typical masonry blocks. In the tests, a spherical plastic explosive initiated in the centre was placed at scaled distance of 2.9 m/kg1/3, so that moderate damage would be caused on the wall. In order to assess the performance of the explosive, pressure gauges were placed at the wall and at different distances from the explosion. Additionally, vibrations were monitored with seismographs in the far field and a high-speed camera was used to estimate the shock wave velocity during the tests. The resulting damage has been evaluated on 13 points of the external wall of each box using a rebound hammer. Damage maps have been drawn for each wall based on these measurements and damage has been assessed inside the box considering the fragments mass launched during the test. The use of external metal mess leads to a decrease of 34 per cent on damage of the external wall and 38 per cent reduction of spalling. Material transport plays a significant role in the efficiency of horizontal grinding mills - autogenous (AG)/semi-autogenous (SAG)/ball mills. The magnitude of benefits that can be achieved with efficient material transport in AG/SAG mills has been demonstrated in a greenfield milling operation at Mirabela MineratpoÆs SantaRita Nickel operation located in north eastern Bahia in Brazil. This grinding circuit was commissioned in October 2009, was designed as a typical SABC circuit to grind 4.6 Mt/a (575 t/h) to produce a P80 of 125 ¦m with ten to 12 per cent ball charge in the SAG mill. However, it has been operating as an ABC circuit without any grinding media in SAG mill. The nameplate design capacity was achieved in few days and was gradually increased to an average of +800 t/h, still operating in ABC mode. The Santa Rita grinding circuit consists of one 30 ft + 15.4 ft 8.5 MW SAG mill fitted with Outotec patented Turbo Pulp Lifters (TPLÖ) in closed circuit with a HP400 short head pebble crusher and one 20 ft + 28.4 ft 5.5 MW Ball Mill in closed circuit with a Warman cyclone cluster fitted with 10 + 26 in CAVEX cyclones. This paper examines the comminution design process, operating philosophies, experiences, post commissioning optimisation and future development works. Deep cuts in CO2 emissions will be required to stabilise and, in the long term, decrease CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. Technologies for capturing CO2 from major stationary sources (power stations, industrial plants, etc) and storing that CO2 for long periods of time is one of few near term options for decreasing CO2 emissions. This transition to low carbon intensity energy and possibly the hydrogen economy through renewables and in the long-term technological developments such as artificial photosynthesis.Capture of CO2 from post combustion emissions can be done using a range of technologies though costs are currently high and dependent on the concentration of CO2 in the emissions. Techniques include solvents, pressure swing adsorption and the use of membranes. Options for decreasing capture costs by increasing the concentration of CO2 in the emission stream include the use of oxyfuels (in pulverized fuel types boilers) and by moving to integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) operations either simply for power generation or for poly-generation opportunities. Once the CO2 has been captured it can be stored using a variety of methods. Storage in the ocean has been suggested but is considered an unlikely option because of environmental uncertainties and political opposition. Mineral storage is a niche opportunity. The greatest potential lies in geological storage of CO2 and this option is commanding increased attention from the Australian and international community.In Australia, the Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies (CO2CRC) is an important new initiative that will support energy companies and energy intensive industries in meeting challenges posed by greenhouse gas issues and assist them in their efforts to reduce their emissions profile.The progress of geo-sequestration and the challenges in the capture and separation of CO2 in the process industries are discussed.

This paper is written as a supplement to that of Edwards, Baker and Knight on "The Geology of the Wonthaggi Coalfield" 1, the West Area pit being in an early developmental stage at the time of their paper. The thin seams to the west of Dudley Basin 2 had beenknown for many years but it was not until 1935 that it became necessary to work them. The West Area Pit came into production as Dudley Area Pit approached exhaustion in 1937. From available information it was estimated that early work would be in a 36in. bottom seam. The present top seam was not included in the reserves, but it was to be extracted where it proved thick enough for economical working.THE SEAMSEdwards, Baker and :Knight (1944) had insufficient information to correlate positively the West Area seams with those in the Dudley Basin. Their opinion was, however, that they were a westerly extension of the Bottom Seam. Since then the driving of the present north-east heading towards No. 4 Bench McBride Tunnel has established that the West Area seams are those worked as Bottom Seam in the Dudley Basin. West Area Top Seam is a seam that occurred above the Bottom Seam in the Dudley Basin. Only sporadic attempts have been made to work it in Central Area, because 30in. was considered an economic minimum height until recent times. This seam should not be confused with Top Seam, Dudley Basin, which lies some 300ft. above the bottom seam measures and except in isolated areas over deeper workings has been eroded away in West Area.

Due to the harsh operating conditions, wearing of the inner refractory lining in a Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) furnace reduces the useful life of the refractories and incurs a significant cost component for relining. In this study, firstly, a combined compressible and incompressible computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to identify the potential wear prone zones in an industrial scale BOS system during the supersonic oxygen blowing phase by quantifying the wall shear stress distributions. Next, the retained slag splashing process was simulated by introducing an inert gas to residual slag mass to achieve a protective coating on the refractory walls. Effect of both design and operational parameters such as lance head configuration, lance position and the initial slag volume on the slag wall coating performance were quantified and most favourable conditions were determined.

Research to develop the use of L.D.slag as an aggregate in road construc-tion is described. The chemistry and mineralogy of L.D. slags are shown to be generally similar to S. Yorkshire arc furnace slags, which have been success-fully used for road construction for many years, although both free lime and iron contents were found to be higher. Physical and mechanical properties are good but the slags' high density will result in lower "covering capacity"."Weathering" in stock piles is shown to significantly reduce free lime levels fairly rapidly although around 50 per cent of the mean "fresh free lime" content is still present even after two years treatment.

Although Western Mining Corporation has been producing high grade nickel ore at Kambalda since 1967, it has only recently become a significant gold producer.The main source of Gold ore has been the Victory Gold Mine located 17 kilometres South of Kambalda.This mine produced small tonnages of high grade gold ore from a sediment horizon within a complex sequence of mafic flows, in the 1890's, early 1900's and 1930's.Today, mining is centred around 2 com-pletely different ore bodies named Victory and Defiance, and involves several different mining methods. This paper describes the Operation's history and gives an outline of the proposed stoping methods.

A computerised simulation model has been developed to select the most suitable digging method of a dragline operation for a given geological condition. The developed procedure uses a geological ore body model as the basis for the geologic database. The simulation selects the most cost effective dragline digging method from a database of various dragline digging methods The database consists of common and innovative dragline methods currently used in Australian open cut mines. A generalised computer package, DSLX, was extensively used to simulate various dragline digging methods. The DSLX software uses predefined functions to build strip geometry, working benches, blast profiles and spoil piles. The outputs from DSLX in form of volumetric, swing angles and hoist distances data are then aggregated with dragline specifications and site time study data to compare productivity of selected digging methods. The result of a case study showed that this procedure lends itself to the 'optimum' selection a dragline digging method for a given coal deposit.

Mount Isa mine has a long history of successful exploration since discovery 70 years ago. Remaining reserves, although substantial, exist in a scheduling framework which involves long-term production from new ore sources with attendant technical risk and major capital investment. Current exploration aims to incrementally increase reserve tonnage to maintain existing production levels as well as to provide a buffer for potential start-up delays from new ore sources. Exploration also aims to increase the net present value of the operation by discovering new major orebodies around the Mount Isa and Hilton mines.
