Location & Permit Status Three major Mesozoic Tertiary basins exist along the continental shelf area of southeastern Australia, known as the Bass Strait area. They are the Gippsland (east of the longitude of Melbourne) Otway (west of Melbourne) and the Bass (underlying central Bass Strait between Victoria and Tasmania). The total area, both onshore and offshore, is approximately 100,000 square miles. In March 1960, the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. acquired exploration title to the continental shelf areas of the Gippsland, Bass and Otway basins from the States of Victoria and Tasmania. The title to that part of the Otway Basin in South Australian waters was granted in July, 1961. Other exploration permits, being 8 miles wide in Gippsland, held by Woodside :E.) Oil Co. N.L., and 15 miles wide along the southwest coast of Victoria, held by Mobil-BP-Interstate Oil (Frome-Broken Hill Co. Pty. Ltd.), were in existence prior to granting the B.H.P. title. Subsequently, Shell, B.H.P., Esso and Magellan have been granted title to the remaining areas of the continental shelf in the basins under discussion. In three separate agreeme negotiated between 1964 and-1966, Esso obtained farm-in rights to B.H.P.'s Gippsland, Bass and Ott' Permits.

Spoil piles are produced routinely in open cut coal mines. Spoil piles may contain waste coal and other carbonaceous horizons. Coal and carbonaceous materials react with oxygen in the atmosphere, producing heat. If the rate at which heat is generated is greater than the rate at which heat can be dissipated, the temperature of the spoil pile rises. If the heating remains unchecked, spontaneous combustion can occur. Spontaneous combustion poses significant safety, environmental and economic problems if it should become established in spoil piles. Using the basic features of self heating in spoil, the use of model is directed toward developing quantitative prediction of spontaneous combustion in open cut coal mine spoil Piles.

Mining-induced seismicity at Junction Gold Mine became a serious operational problem in the late-1990s. Assessing the local seismic hazard is an important step in assessing the risk associated with potential rockbursting. This paper discusses the qualitative and quantitative means of assessing seismic hazard used at Junction. In qualitative hazard assessment, the role of the primary factors contributing to mining-induced seismicity and rockbursting are identified. These factors include: rock mass properties, geological structures, mine development, and stoping. A qualitative seismic hazard map has been developed considering these factors. In quantitative hazard assessment, seismic source parameters from an Integrated Seismic System are used to assess seismic hazard. The seismic source parameters found to be relevant to seismic hazard assessment at Junction are discussed.

Underground measurements, observations and computed simulations, started a long time ago were concerning the study of : - occurence of typical rockburst, - inducing, stretching of main fractures in the roof of caved longwalls. They made obvious a foundamental phenomenon of inducing of strata fractures involving contact be- tween two layers quite different in their elastic characteristics : coalseam and rocklayer.. The start of primary cracks in maximum abutment zone takes place in the rock near the contact surface. It is opening of crevasses induced by traction stress component resulting of difference of rigidity of both materials and no sliding on in- terface. Occurence and stretching of these crevas- ses are a rheological phenomenon so that the rate of advance and stops of the face influence the distance between the crevasses and the stretching of these ones. The characteristics of these cracks in space and time affect mining conditions. So it is for fractures proximity and expan- sion inducing eventual blocks formation in longwall roofs in front of faces, for depth and delay of road- ways ribsides fracturing, inducing some rockbursts. In longwalls roofs, cracks initiated in front of a face can be either quite close or quite distant each from the other one, according to the depth of crushed coal in front of the face, which af- fects also extension of the cracks.

Gold occurs at Mt. Charlotte associated with a stockwork of pyritised quartz veins in Unit 8 of the Golden Mile Dolerite. The ore- body is massive, 200m long and 40m wide and has been proved to over 600m below surface. Mining is by sublevel ring drill stoping with the ore recovered by diesel powered equipment. Ore reserves are based on traverses of diamond drill holes oriented to produce an equal intersection width on the two principal sets of quartz veins. Assay and geological boundaries are marked on each drill section and this boundary is transferred to mine plans and cross sections. Ring-drilling patterns are based on the cross sections and the resulting mining outline is transferred back to the drilling sections. The mine ore reserve is calculated from the mining outline.

Since that time, production growth has been relatively slow, with declining production in the developed countries and increasing production in some newly developing countries. Since 1970, Western World crude steel production has been static at around 450 million tonnes, with cycles around this level in a 100 million tonnes band.

The LeadtZinc Concentrator at Mount lsa treats all the lead-zinc-silver ore from the Mount Isa Mine and some of the ore from the Hilton Mine. This concentrator was commissioned in June 1966 and total lead-zinc-silver ore treatment was transferred from the Mount rsa's original No 1 Concentrator in May 1967. Plant capacity is around 5 x 106 t/y.There have been three phases of major plant modifications since commissioning:1. replacement and upgrading of the flotation section in 1979; 2. upgrading of the crushing plant and installation of a heavy medium hydrocyclone plant in 1983 for ore preconcentration, and; 3. doubling ball milling capacity and a further upgrading of the flotation section in 1992.Other developments have included the installation of flotation columns and Jameson cells.The evolution of milling practice since 1955 has been reported by Davey and Slaughter (1970), Bartrum, Dobrowolski and Schache (1977), Fiedler and Munro (1984) and Espinosa-Gomez el al (1989).Lead concentrate is smelted in Mount Isa while zinc concentrate and bulk concentrate (locally called Low Grade Middlings or LGM) are railed to Townsville and shipped to custom electrolytic zinc plants and ISP smelters.

Gas dynamic phenomena, particularly instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas are problems experienced in gassy, highly stressed coal, both usually the result of depth. Diff- erent mining geometries present different opportunities for seam gas to escape, starting from the virgin condition unaffected by mining and ending with the mining of the coal. The mining of the coal varies from entering a virgin seam cross-measure, heading out into virgin seam, advancing longwall faces into virgin seam and extracting developed blocks from large longwall retreating blocks to small pillars. Each method has its particular gass- iness patterns and particular stress patterns, both changing to some extent with time, and changing as mining progresses. Geological structural anomalies are the cause of gas and stress anomalies, causing in turn greater gas and stress manifestations. Pre-drainage of gas from the working seam not only degasifies the coal but causes it to shrink and so may affect stress as well as gas patterns. Unfortunately prior degasification is not all benefit, and there are some d13- advantages to its use. Also although it is possible to degasify places ahead, gassiness will return if drainage holes are shut down or sealed up and other deleterious aspects may be induced. Research should continue into the problem of instantaneous outbursts of coal and Gas.

Examples are provided of discontinuity analysis at selected sites in central Victoria. Discontinuities are rock fractures of low tensile strength, including bedding, foliations and joints, which are analysed during rock excavation design, to quantitatively determine the defect orientations, spacing and lengths. Their analysis can reduce the cost of mining operation and improve safety. Extrapolation beyond the exposed face is required, although difficult without an understanding of the regional geology. For rock engineering purposes assumptions are commonly made that discontinuity characteristics are uniform throughout the rock mass, however this is often invalid, as rock masses have usually undergone large-scale deformation, exhibit anisotropy and inhomogeneity. Structural geologists are able to interpret large-scale deformation responses for the purposes of structural correlation and extrapolation. Examples of discontinuity analysis linked to regional geological assesment from sites in central Victoria, reveal that discontinuities exhibit similar characteristics in a range of rock types of different ages and composition. Spacing variations between individual sites are believed to be a result of local rock type differences.

In September 1988 the Imperial Smelting zinc - lead blast furnace at Avonmouth England, was uprated from its then 52 week annual rated capacity of 90 000 tonnes/year of furnace zinc to 110 000 tonnes. In order to provide sufficient extra feed the sinter plant was likewise uprated in April 1989 by increasing the blowing rate of the sinter/acid plants from 100 000 to 120 000 Nm3/h, effectively a 20 per cent increase. In the 12 months after the uprate zinc production was only 85 000 tonnes. Two years after the uprate zinc production had increased to 100 000 tonnes, but it was not until January 1992 that a rolling 12-month zinc production of 110 000 tonnes was consistently achieved. This paper describes the problems encountered with the uprate and how they have been or are being overcome. It deals chronologically with events starting with the restart of the ISF at the end of 1988 and covers the following issues and their resolution: 1. Initial shortages of sinter due to an offset in uprate timing. 2. Greater difficulties in operating the larger furnace particularly on start-up, the greater tendency for iron production and serious slagging problems. 3. Coincidental timing of deleterious trends in slag chemistry. 4. Refractory problems in the furnace shaft and condenser. 5. Shortages of sinter due to commissioning problems with the wet gas and sinter tip end fans, and difficulties in obtaining sufficient sinter hardness. 6. Unrealised full benefits of the sinter-acid uprate due to a late change in design to dispense with sinter gas recirculation, but offset by successful use of oxygen. In a planned maintenance stop in September 1992 further improvements to the furnace design were carried out to resolve the refractory problems, and with improvements to the sinter plant the furnace zinc output capacity is planned to rise to a rate of 120 000 tonnes/year within two years.

This paper describes a CFD modelling study which was carried out to investigate possible improvements in the design of an alumina precipitator tank at the Jajarm plant of Iran Alumina Company. In particular, the tank has an impeller located very close to the tank bottom, such that it quickly becomes covered with settled solids after a shut-down of the agitator, making it difficult to restart. A CFD model was firstly set up in which the existing design was evaluated in terms of flow pattern, off-bottom suspension and distribution of solids, and power consumption. Further simulations were then carried out to test alternative designs, leading to a recommended design, which maintains good mixing, with the same power consumption and without the use of a low-clearance impeller.

The use of dolomite as a refractory began in England about 1870 when the basic Bessemer process for the removal of phosphorus from steel was developed by Thomas and Gilchrist.Knowledge of dolomite as a refractory in this country goes back to the early part of this century, at the time when the Hoskins Brothers took over the Lithgow Iron and Steel Works from W. Sandford. The practice then was toimport burned dolomite in casks from England. It is reported that much of the material was powdered when received, but was still serviceable. The earliest. used sources of local stone were in the Bathurst and Mudgee areas of New South Wales, and these dolomites were first used raw. Later, dolomite was burned in cupolas at Havilah near Mudgee, coke being obtained from the South Coast of New South Wales. This plant supplied burned dolomite to the Lithgow steel plant, later to the Australil1n Iron and Steel plant at Port Kembla, and also to the electric steel furnaces at Newcastle, Sydney and Melbourne until the plant was closed down in 1946.The Broken Hill Proprietary Company first obtained its dolomite from George's Plains near Bathurst (this was, really a magnesium limestone) and later from Mount Knowles, a deposit near Mudgee, which was eventually taken over by the CO:plpany in 1918. Although it has long been recognised that there is a diversity of minerals associated with Victorian gold deposits, the degree to which this mineralogy is systematic or haphazard has remained uncertain. Recent work by the authors and students under their supervision permits a sharp delineation of the boundaries between different mineralogical domains, and these are interpreted in terms of recent rapid advances in Victorian tectonics, and the regional framework of Victorian gold geology described in Phillips and Hughes (1996).

In Canada the federal government's Mining Research Laboratory at EIIiot Lake, Ontario, has been using two aerosol counters to aid its investigations. The iron blast furnace is the most widely used and efficient producer of liquid iron; however, emissions from sintering and coking cause environmental pressure for the integrated steel works. The combustion of coke fines (breeze) during sintering contributes to greenhouse gases (GHG) (eg carbon dioxide) and is a source of SOx and NOx emissions. Coking capacity is also constrained by environmental concerns and economic factors, such as increased coke consumption, and short supply is leading to high prices. Improved coking practices, which result in reduced production of fines, are also contributing to the tight availability of breeze for sintering. This combination of factors presents an opportunity to consider alternatives to coke as a fuel for sintering. CSIRO Minerals has been investigating the use of wood biomass/char as a substitute for coke during sintering. Wood biomass, or char produced from it, is an attractive carbon source as carbon dioxide liberated during combustion can be sequestered back into growing biomass. It has great potential to reduce the emissions from integrated steelworks and improve their environmental acceptability. Harvested biomass/char is also a renewable and sustainable resource and can be integrated with good land management practices such as remediation of salinity affected land. Weeds, especially woody weeds, can also be used as a source of biomass for charcoal, and integrating char production with weed management can help address a pressing environmental issue in Australia. Previous reported preliminary testwork indicated that the use of Red Gum char as a replacement for coke resulted in a product sinter of comparable quality, improvements in productivity and significant reductions in SOx and NOx emissions. In the latest testwork, CSIRO has examined the properties of a range of potential charcoals, and has conducted a further series of granulation and small-scale sintering trials with them in simulated Japanese Steel Mill iron ore blends. Sinter fuels characterised and evaluated include industry sourced coke breeze, commercially available wood char and a charcoal from prickly acacia (acacia nilotica). Prickly acacia has been declared a noxious weed, is widespread in Australia, and is classified as a æWeed of National SignificanceÆ. The results presented in this paper support the notion that charcoal outperforms coke in many aspects of iron ore sintering and factoring in environmental considerations makes the switch to charcoal even more favourable.

The statistical nature of the variability in detonation times of pyrotechnic delays is discussed, and how to evaluate the probability of required detonation intervals is shown. Some methods (analytical and stochastic) are given for designing blasts to ensure that any adverse effects on the variability in the delays is taken into account and minimised. Using computer models of blasts, detonation simulations can be used to check the initiation sequence for the probability of sequence reversals, indicating areas of high blast damage potential. Charge consumption rates, which relate directly to the resulting vibration levels, can be examined for their susceptibility to variation from delay variability. Models that synthesize vibration waveforms for production blasts, when taking delay variability into account, indicate the difficulty in vibration level prediction.

There has been disappointingly little development in the understanding of the behaviour of rock slopes in open pit mines over the past 30 years. The lack of development in general, and of robust, standardised approaches in particular, are surprising in view of the æultraÆ deep open pit mines that are being developed to depths in excess of 1000 m. Research has recently been carried out into the occurrence of zones of extension strain in open pit slopes. This showed that very large zones of extension strain can occur, and this finding represents a significant new aspect in slope stability that has not been considered before. The greatest magnitudes of extension strain occur near the toe of the slope, either in the slope itself, or in the floor of the pit. Results of the research will be presented for different slope heights, slope angles and horizontal to vertical in situ stress ratios. The magnitudes of the strains are considered to be large enough to result in fracturing of intact rock, and the fracture orientations predicted are adverse for slope stability. Fracturing that is extension in nature is common in competent, brittle rocks and often develops with some violence and little or no warning, producing easily measurable seismicity. In the slope situation, the expected physical manifestation of this behaviour would be popping off of rock slabs and plates of rock from slope surfaces and popping up of the pit floor, as well as the formation of new fractures within the rock mass. Such behaviour may cause overall slope failure, or may initiate failure, which may then be driven to overall slope failure by other influencing factors or combinations of factors. In addition to instability resulting from the fracture surfaces themselves, all induced fracture surfaces could interact with natural geological structures to facilitate formation of a significant failure surface. Case studies of slope failure in two open pits will be described. In both cases failure occurred æsuddenlyÆ after very limited amounts of deformation. In the first, the slope crest moved suddenly upwards and backwards over a length of more than 200 m, with associated instability. In the second, the horizontal displacement of the slope face was almost an order of magnitude greater than the vertical displacement and occurred æsuddenlyÆ. A recently installed seismic system is detecting events in a significant zone behind the slope face. Both pits were in the 200 m to 300 m depth range at the time of the occurrences.
