A brief review is presented of the mechanisms and causes of spoil pile failures which have occurred at the Goonyella Mine. In particular, the results of a recent geo- technical investigation of the spoil dumps in the Cleanskin pit are briefly presented. Spoil pile hydrology is discussed in relation to the use of effective stress concepts in the analysis of spoil pile stability. Experience in relation to stabilisation of dragline dumps is discussed as well as the likelihood of current techniques being success- ful in the prevention of gross failures if prestrip material is placed in existing spoil piles. Parameters exerting a major control on dump stability are outlined.

The difficulty in screening of ores when the moisture contents reach certain critical levels has resulted in mining circuits using wet processes for screening. While this has been acceptable in past years it is no longer acceptable in certain countries and where the mining company is looking to reduce its impact on the surrounding environment.   Various mining companies have been looking at ways to remove the need of using water, with all its inherent drawbacks and to be able to produce its desired products in a dry process.   This would have the benefits of less environmental impact and cost, (due to not requiring wet processing equipment), less power consumption (reduced equipment needed), no corrosion issues, no contaminated waste waters and reduced maintenance activities.   Until recently this has proven elusive or with technical restrictions with current available acceptable technologies for high capacity plants.   One major mining company began seriously exploring ways to overcome this dilemma so that they did not replicate their current ways of operating for their new expansion plans.   They partnered with Metso Minerals to undertake extensive groundbreaking laboratory test work and provide potential solutions as to how to solve this. The laboratory test work proved interesting enough to design, manufacture and test on the actual mining site a prototype screening machine in the circuit.   This break through in screening technology reduces the environmental impact on the area in which the mine is located by: eliminating the storage and use of water, reduction in energy consumption due to having no pumps in the plant, reduction in plant costs and the upstream affects on the environment process used to manufacture and ship the materials the plant structure is built from, and no large tailings dams to take up land space and affect the environment through groundwater/ water table contamination and the negative effects on animals and ecosystems Laboratory test were conducted and a full size machine was installed at the plant site along side conventional machines. The screen size (2.4 m wide x 6.1 long double deck) was determined by the size of screens currently in operation at the mine. The parameters that were explored were: types of screen surface (polyurethane, woven wire etc), types of screen motion (linear, circular or elliptical), angle of motion ( 40,45,55,60 degrees etc), and throw (amplitude), speed and 'g' force.

This investigation involves laboratory testing and stability analysis of paste fill at the Golden Giant Mine. Site-cast samples are tested in unconfined, confined, and consolidated-undrained triaxial compression. Pore pressures during shear and consolidation characteristics are measured to determine both drained and undrained shear strength parameters and assess the potential for undrained loading. Liquefaction potential is also considered. A limit equilibrium solution is used to obtain factors of safety against failure of the fill during mining of adjacent stopcs

Mining operations require detailed and precise methods and procedures for the optimum selection of ore from waste. A fundamental procedure applied to achieve this selection is accurate sampling. The key parameter to accurate sampling is an understanding of the degree of heterogeneity of the key element contained within a sampling mass. This paper will describe the methods applied for the calculation of the fundamental sampling error and the techniques used to achieve a representative sample in the Fimiston Open Pit, Kalgoorlie.The utilisation of Pierre Gy's sampling theory has optimised the blast hole sample quality and quantity for submission to the assay laboratory. This has resulted in reduced cost and optimised assay reliability in statistical terms. Similarly the analysis of exploration drill holes for resource definition has optimised drilling procedures in terms of the drilling method, sample length and sample quantity.

Canberra is a planned city in which the natural environment, rather than existing development and land tenure, has until recent times at least, imposed the major constraints to development. Even redevelopment poses fewer problems than for most cities. Geological conditions have, therefore, played a significant role in determining its shape and layout. The Canberra experience has relevance for major new mining and engineering projects. The role of engineering geologists and geophysicists in Canberra's development is described, and the problems arising from the geological environment are illustrated by several case histories. Four aspects are addressed: pre-development urban geology; major engineering projects; resources evaluation, including groundwater; and post-development problem-solving. The Australian Capital Territory lies within the Palaeozoic Lachlan Fold Belt. Within the ACT the belt is composed of folded and faulted metasiltstones, metasandstones and acid volcanics, intruded by a major granitic pluton. Some limestone lenses occur. The region has been part of a land mass since Late Devonian times and landscape evolution has been very complex. Geological features of special geotechnical significance include deep but variable weathering, with slight to moderate weathering along faults to at least 70 metres depth in places, and consequential foundation problems; close jointing; weathered limestone lenses with solution cavities containing clay and water; confined aquifers containing artesian water in scree deposits flanking hills; the presence of pyrite; and poor quality and low volumes of groundwater.

In 1975 the Commonwealth Government established import parity pricing for all liquid hydrocarbons discovered after the 16th September, 1975. These discoveries were termed "new oil" to differentiate them from existing discoveries and production. Overnight the price of the product being sought trebled, resulting in greatly enhanced economics by increasing the potential returns on existing prospects and by making smaller plays economically viable. After 18 years of drilling, the offshore Gippsland Basin has attained a moderate level of exploration for a basin of its size. Fifty seven prospects have been drilled within the basin but only a few of these were drilled along the southern and northern margins, while the deep water areas along the eastern margin have remained virtually undrilled following the Hapuku-1 oil discovery. The major hydrocarbon accumulations within the basin are trapped beneath the Latrobe Unconformity surface and exploration has largely concentrated on this single play in areas immediately adjacent to the major producing fields.

This paper presents a fragmentation model for large production blasts in an open pit or underground environment. The paper shows that the particle velocity is directly related to pressure, strain, and strain rate and so it can be considered as driving force and mechanism of rock fragmentation. This is supported by the fact that a vibration with a larger peak particle velocity (PPV) generates larger disturbance in rock and so finer fragmentation or more blast damage than a low PPV. The crack distribution in rock from impact is based on findings from previous researchers (Seaman, Curran and Shockey, 1976; Liu and Xu, in press). The fragmentation size is calculated at three-dimensional grid points within a blast. The fines and oversized blocks are calculated explicitly – the fines generated close to blastholes and big blocks far from boreholes are modelled naturally. The multiple blasthole fragmentation (MBF) model takes surveyed irregular geometry of the free face of a blast as the calculation boundary. The MBF can model fragmentation with over one million grid points. Examples of the model’s field comparison are also included.The PPV at a calculation grid is estimated based on the same approach used for the near field non-linear vibration model (Yang and Scovira, 2007). The method is based on the dominant charge for a calculation grid point, non-linear charge weight superposition within a charge and from multiple charges, strain wave broadening, and amplitude attenuation with distance from a charge segment. The blasthole confinement affected by earlier firing charges is also taken into account.The MBF model inputs from blast design, such as: location and orientation of each blasthole, stemming length, blasthole diameter, multiple decking, bench height, initiation sequence, etc. It models the effect of the delay and its scatter in each blasthole on fragmentation and has a statistical modelling capability for geological random variation on attenuation of particle velocity wave. The wave reinforcement due to instantaneous waves arriving or diminishing cooperative contribution due to long delay intervals between charges is also simulated.The results are displayed in 3D volumetric plots, contour of fragmentation in cross-sections, and size passing curves for a whole blast or a region of the blast.CITATION:Yang, R, 2015. A methodology for modelling dense medium cyclones is presented for cyclones operating under conditions which avoid particle interference or apex crowding. Particle interference and apex crowding are shown to result in less efficient separations and represent undesirable regimes of dense medium cyclone operation. In order to avoid apex crowding, suitable medium to ore ratios and apex diameters should be used. Cyclone density differentials should be kept below approximately 400kg.m 3 to limit loss of efficiency due to excessive particle recirculation within the cyclone. The relationship between size-by-size partition curves shows that the flow split and density of the medium within a cyclone can be related to two new parameters, the pivot partition number and pivot density. The parameters are common to each partition curve in any set of size-by-size data and are mathematically related to the familiar performance characteristics, ecart probable (Ep) and separation density. The resulting expression confirms that the Ep and separation density are directly related.

The Tui Mine is located near Te Aroha at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula. It was a lead-zinc mine, which closed in 1973 due to declining concentrate prices, high overheads, and high mercury levels in the ore. The site was abandoned, leaving behind an acid rock drainage generating system, including a sulfide-rich tailings dam which has since caused pollution of Tui Stream, as well as open adits and waste piles which drain predominantly into the neighbouring Tunakohoia Stream. At the AusIMM conference in 2003, Harvey and Webster-Brown presented water quality results from the Tui mine site and lower stream catchments in 2002. In April 2006, Environment Waikato undertook remediation works to stabilise the dam and reduce acid drainage entering Tui Stream. In this study, water quality results from the Tui mine site and lower stream catchments are again being determined, in order to compare with the pre-remediation results. Preliminary data collected for summer indicate a minor but consistent improvement in water quality in the lower stream catchments, although lower Tui Stream continues to exceed ANZECC (2000) aquatic life guidelines for Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn. This slight improvement may be due to a decrease in the flow of ARD into Tui Stream, as there does not appear to have been an improvement in quality of the contributing ARD waters.

The irregular shape of the Rosebery orebody, coupled with the inconsistencies in grade over short strike lengths, has meant stoping blocks have had to be small to combat dilution and stability problems. In the past, each lens was divided into regular block sizes and developed up to five years before production commenced. There were two major drawbacks to this practice; firstly, existing development deteriorated over time therefore requiring rehabilitation prior to production. Secondly, the pre-determined blocks could not be easily changed to incorporate changes in mining technology or economic circumstances. Bearing these problems in mind, it was evident that any new lens development had to be designed to allow maximum flexibility. The lens being currently developed is J lens. It represents approximately 50 per cent of the current reserves tonnes, and 65 per cent of the zinc metal. Its importance to the mine's future cannot be over emphasised. At its core the lens is up to 25 m thick at grades of over 30 per cent zinc. The practice of dividing the orebody into levels and sublevels, with consequent crowns was no longer acceptable because of restrictions in stope design and potential loss of ore. To assist in the development planning of J lens, a geostatistical block model was applied in long section to graphically represent the lens. Areas of high zinc concentration, as well as zones of uneconomic material were identified by using the model. This has meant that the development could he targeted, enabling stope delineation to occur in the lens without significant ore loss. Because of limited development resources, and the need to bring J lens on-line in the near future, the development strategy has had to focus on 'just-in-time' principles, rather than accessing the whole lens from bottom, and progressing upwards. Tight development schedules have required individual stoping block to be developed on such factors as grade and available tonnes rather than as a vertical sequence.

The Abra mineralized body is regarded as a significant new style of mineralization for its environment. It is a blind polymetallic deposit, located in the Bangemall Basin of Western Australia. It was discovered by Geopeko in 1981 by diamond drilling a coincident magnetic gravity target, which revealed a large low grade epithermal Fe-Ba-Pb-Ag-Cu-(AuW) deposit, hosted by chemogenic and clastic sedimentary rocks, overlain by 200-500 m of clastic sedimentary rocks, of Middle Proterozoic age. The mineralization occurs as an upper stratabound phase, and a lower vein "stringer" style phase within a pervasive chlorite alteration envelope.

Geological maps of the Pacific Rim recently published by the Circum-Pacific Council for Energy and Mineral Resources have provided a useful perspective from which to view modern plate interaction and the evolution of modern fold belts. An important lesson from any study of modern plate interaction is that of the normality of change. The chaotic is more usual than the simple. Present day convergent margins with mixed characteristics are measures of this chaos. Indeed, the character of less than one third of the present length of the Pacific Rim can be ascribed to conventional models of plate interaction. Another lesson is that of the great mobility of oceanic crust. Enormous areas of the Pacific may not be represented in future fold belts developed at convergent boundaries unless normal consumption processes are disrupted, and even then only by linear zones a few kilometres wide. The axes of divergent boundaries creating Pacific Ocean crust have been equally mobile, with new spreading sites taking over from older sites through time. Divergent boundaries, whether active or inactive, consist of oceanic crust, and may be wholly consumed at collision sites with convergent boundaries. Their only potential contributions to fold belt evolution are transforms and magmatic activity. It is this transform component that can provide us with a mechanism to explain the apparent contradiction of both compressional and extensional features occurring together in a developing fold belt. Reconstructions for the SW Pacific are used to demonstrate that the fold belts under construction during the last 4% (Jurassic- Recent) of geologic time have involved interaction between convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries. There has been increased focus in Australia on large diameter raise boring for ventilation shafts and orepass excavation in good quality, brittle, highly stressed rock. As mining in many parts of Australia progresses to deeper levels, more vertical openings are being excavated in highly stressed ground conditions. However, whilst shafts have been successfully raise bored in highly stressed rock, it is often at a significantly increased risk of loss or damage to inhole equipment. It is important for both mine owners and contractors to have an appreciation of these risks at the planning and tendering phases of raise boring contracts. This paper provides an understanding of the risks associated with large diameter raise boring and a review of methods to predict failure in highly stressed rock.

The Hamersley Iron ore resources are geologically complex with fluctuations in mineral chemistry. From this resource Hamersley Iron must produce consistently high quality direct shipping products and have the ability to evaluate the effects of changes in demand. In order to achieve these objectives an incremental long term planning technique has been developed. This method reduces the total geological resource statement into a simple, logical sequence of events. A logical sequence of mining increments is defined within individual areas based on a final pit and access system. Increment characteristics are derived manually and from a computer based orebody model. The end product of the technique, an optimum mining schedule, is readily developed from the incremental information. Among its many benefits, this simple technique rapidly provides management with information for policy formulation.

The volumetric method of estimating hydrocarbon resources and recoverable reserves is and probably will remain a dominant method in petroleum engineering. The method is technically very simple, but has one main problem: how to express, measure and properly handle the variable and complex uncertainty of each estimate. The computer age brought in the Monte Carlo Simulation method which enables correct arithmetic operation using data with specified probability distribution. However, several problems are still not solved uniquely and still exist. For instance, the determination and description of the distribution of single parameters, the determination of the degree of dependency between parameters (e.g. hydrocarbon saturation-porosity), and standard probabilist- ic definition of generally used categories (e.g. proved, probable, possible). Methods for handling these problems are discussed.
