The Reefton Goldfield on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand was a significant gold producing area between 1860 and 1951. During this period it produced approximately 2.1 million ounces (67 tonnes) of gold. The largest single producer on the goldfield and the deepest mine in New Zealand, was the Blackwater Mine at Waiuta which produced 21 tonnes of gold. The Prolubition Shaft reached a depth of 878 metres (317 metres below sea level). The mine closed suddenly in 1951 with about 66 000 tonnes of are remaining in the stapes. Since closure there has been no attempt to determine the ore potential of the mine at depth. This paper summarises the geology, history and resource potential of the mine and sets out two options for evaluating the remaining resource. The options are either deep drilling from surface or recovery of the Prohibition Shaft and underground development and drilling. A schedule for each option is presented and discussed.

The Weda Bay nickel and cobalt laterite deposits on Halmahera Island, Republic of Indonesia were first drilled in May 1996 by Strand Minerals Pte Ltd (Strand). Subsequent exploration has delineated four large laterite provinces, parts of which have been diamond drilled to outline an indicated nickel resource of 59.9 Mt of 1.51 per cent Ni and 0.09 per cent Co within a total indicated and inferred resource of 117 Mt of 1.36 per cent Ni and 0.12 per cent Co. The project is held as a Seventh Generation Contract of Work (COW) by PT Weda Bay Nickel, which is jointly owned by Strand (90 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (ten per cent). Strand is a wholly owned subsidiary of Weda Bay Minerals Inc, a company listed on the Toronto and Alberta Stock Exchanges in Canada. Halmahera is located in the north-eastern part of the Indonesian archipelago at the convergent junction of three major plates and is a region of considerable tectonic and geological complexity. The western arms of Halmahera form a classic volcanic island arc while the central region and eastern arms contain ophiolite complexes and interlayered sediments. The extensive areas of laterite discovered at Weda Bay have developed over serpentinised harzburgites and dunites of pre-Cretaceous age. Weathering of these rocks has produced laterite profiles that are enriched in nickel and cobalt. There are three economically mineralised laterite types, namely limonites, ferruginous saprolites and saprolites and all are amenable to rapid pressure acid leaching with recoveries of 98 per cent nickel and 94 per cent cobalt in less than 20 minutes.

IN all wet concentration processes it is of primary importance to determine to what degree the crushing must be carried in order to obtain the maximum profit per ton of ore milled.To effect a clean separation, either by gravity or flotation treatment, between either one valuable sulphide from another, or a sUlphide from the gangue, the ore must have been subjected to grinding to such an extent that the particles to be separated are completely liberated from each other.Insufficient crushing will result in either an incomplete separation of the sulphides from each other, and thus a loss of the one sulphide in the other, or else a loss of the valuable sulphide in the gangue.This being so, the question arises whether the added cost of extra crushing would be economically warranted by the increased recovery consequent on such a step.

It's long been suspected that there has been an increase in the incidence of premature failure of rock bolts in underground coal mines over the past ten years. As far back as 2002 a study found a possible contributor to such premature failure in some Australian coal mines might be linked to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) (Crosky et al, 2002). That study suggested the low impact toughness could be a major influence on the susceptibility to SCC of different steel compositions. A subsequent study involving laboratory corrosion tests however failed to confirm any link with metallurgical factors (Villalba and Atrens, 2007), a finding that is at odds with field experience. Some mine sites today are still reporting prematurely failed rock bolts to the rock bolt manufacturers; the failures are being identified at SCC induced. To this end a research project has recently been commissioned at University of New South Wales (UNSW), which aims to identify the environmental factors causing SCC, through field test sites and simulating the conditions within an accelerated corrosion laboratory. Dry separation of iron ore fines and other heavy minerals has previously been achieved using one of two main approaches. The first is an inclined table with an upward airflow via small holes to help form an autogenous dense medium. The second is based on fluidised beds comprising a dense medium formed by fine particles suspended in an upward flow of air. In either case, vibration can be introduced. This paper describes recent findings using a novel system referred to as the Sink-Hole Fluidiser, which utilises elements of both these two former approaches. This device consists of a conventional gas-fluidised bed of fine medium with a 1 mm aperture mesh located at the surface. This mesh contains relatively large holes that act as sink-holes. The fluidised media flows upwards through the sink-holes and then falls back into the fluidised bed via the fine apertures in the mesh. The particles being separated, which are much larger than the fine media, pass over these sink-holes, where they either sink or float. The sink-holes offer a more precise balance of forces, applied on a single particle basis, resulting in robust density separation.Experiments have been performed using 2.0–4.0 mm tracer particles of density varying from 2.4 to 4.8 relative densities (RD) separated in a 200 mm diameter Sink-Hole Fluidiser with a single 13 mm diameter centrally-located sink-hole. In this preliminary semi-batch work, it was found that the Sink-Hole Fluidiser was able to achieve sharp separations (Ep as low as 0.20). The Main Seam occurs in two 'pods', termed North and South, separated by an east-west oriented 'want' zone (most probably a palaeo-channel). The seam on either side of the 'want' area reaches thicknesses of over 30 metres but the North Main Seam adjacent to the 'want' zone has been split into multiple seams of 10 to 15 m thickness. Rock types in the inter-burden of this area are characterised by inter-bedded sandstones and carbonaceous mudstones varying in thickness from 0.5 to 5 m. In the South Main Seam, an area of un-split coal exists and is characterised by few inorganic partings. Overburden in this area varies geographically from relatively thick mudstones in the south and east part of the coal deposit to inter-bedded sandstones and carbonaceous mudstones adjacent to the 'want' area. The sandstone/mudstone overburden probably represents a splay or splay-channel complex emanating from the larger 'want' area palaeo-channel. Modelling lithological variability is of use because it is one of the factors used in predicting cavability and roof support system design. The coal in both the north and south deposits were found to exhibit highly predictable quality and breakage parameters in relation to the coal geometry. Although ash yield and sulphur are mostly low and not variable, volatile matter and thus fixed carbon, varied in relation to seam thickness. In general, volatile matter (dat) decreased and moisture increased with decreasing seam thickness whereas moisture increased with decreasing seam thickness. In addition to these parameters it was found that the energy needed to crush the coal was lowest at the top and bottom of the seam and, on a whole seam basis, decreased with seam thickness. All of these parameters were found to vary in relation to the vitrain band content of the coal which itself was controlled by seam geometry. These parameters can therefore be modelled and inputted into mining plans and quality control operations.

As it is my opinion that deep alluvial mining in Victoria and in the Murray Flats in New South Wales is practically in its infancy, and considering that we, the old school of alluvial miners, who have thirty or forty years' experience to guide us, must in the natural order of things hand over the management of our mine, to the younger and less experienced' generation of miners, I thought that as our Association has been formed for the purpose of disseminating information and the exchange of ideas, a few notes on the practical working of alluvial mines might be of some service to aspirants for the position of mining manager.The greatest difficulty the alluvial miner has to contend against is the immense quantity of water contained in the drifts overlying the wash in the gutters or ancient river beds, and to cope with this water successfully and economically is the point to be aimed at by our mining managers; and if they thoroughly understand this part of their business in all its details, they will not only win kudos for themselves, but will be the means of saving large sums of money to the companies they represent, and, in many instances, will make a success of a venture which otherwise might be stopped for want of funds before it is properly proved. At the present time, although we have had over forty years' experience indraining the deep leads of the colony, I regret to say that a large amount of ignorance still prevails amongst both directors and managers.

The advantages and limitations of the borehole method are outlined, and general principles of plant design are discussed.INTRODUCTIONFor many years, attempts have been made to reduce mine development costs by various methods. Some of the, techniques of tunnelling have been adopted in horizontal headings, and in main vertical shafts, mechanical plant has displaced hand labour with notable success. However, in the field of small rises and winzes, improvements have largely been effected by attention to details of procedure. Solid. dense, air-cooled slag can fulfil most, if not all, the functions of natural stone for civil engineering purposes. The value of pumice, also, has long been appreciated, and processes for the manufacture of similar synthetic material for light-weight concretes and insulating fills have been developed in past years.Foamed slag is, in effect, blast furnace pumice and is often referred to on the European continent as metallurgical pumice. It is made by the treatment of molten blast furnace slags with a critical quantity of water during which process the slag cools and expands into a sponge-like mass. The connection between foamed slag and air-cooled slag is also considered and a basis for density control given.All blast furnace slag cannot be foamed to give a product which would comply with B.S.S.877; 1939 Foamed Blast Furnace Slag. A large proportion of the total output of molten slag lacks the necessary inherent properties. This investigation attempts to discover the conditions necessary for the production of foamed slag capable of meeting the British specification.EARLIER WORKIt was generally accepted (Parker, 1951; Gallai-Hatchard, 1955) that the spongy structure of foamed slag was caused mechanically by steam trapped in the slag when it was poured into water. It was assumed that slags which would not foam would not trap steam, because their viscosities and surface tensions were unsatisfactory, on account of temperature and/or composition. The earliest systematic investigation was made by Frisak (1923) who attempted to establish a limiting chemical composition for foamable slags. He decided that foamable slags covered most blast furnace slag compositions on the basis of silica, alumina, and lime, and further "that the replacement of lime by magnesia up to 15 per cent has no noteworthy effect on foamability, that moderate quantities of alkalis are not deleterious, that sulphur raises the foamability and that MnO is only deleterious in the presence of 1...

Particles of a complex nickel sulphide concentrate (containing pyrite, pyrrhotite, pentIandite, and violarite as the major mineralogical constituents) were entrained in a stream of hot gas the temperature of which was varied from 500 to -1000°C. Chemical analysis of the particulates collected from the furnace was used to detect the rapid change in sulphur content which accompanied the ignition temperature jump. X-ray diffraction analysis was used to characterize the oxidized material.These techniques showed that ignition was dependent on the mineralogical composition and occurred over the temperature range 500-900°C. Pyrite ignited first in the range 500-600°C; pyrrhotite was the least reactivemineral and required temperatures in excess of 800°C for ignition. The nickel minerals <pentIandite and violarite decomposed before ignition and ignited at temperatures intermediate to those required for the pyrite and pyrrhotite. The ignition temperature for the pyrite was found to be independent of particle size and concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere.Ignition temperatures determined by the simulated flash smelting method were compared with the results of differential thermal analysis (DTA) measurements performed on the same concentrate. Temperaturesdetermined in the DTA test as corresponding to the start of exothermic activity were shown to be at least 100°C below those determined by the simulation test.

This paper presents a study about reopening of a quarry near to the geothermal region of Kntahya, Turkey. The production method was gallery blasting which resulted in very high ground vibrations. Therefore the quarry had been closed down by the local authorities about 12 years ago due to possible damages to the geothermal resources. In order to reopen the quarry, reserve estimation and production planning studies needs to be carried out as well as applying environmentally sensitive production method. The result of reserve estimation studies showed approximately 12.5 Mt reserve in the area. The market studies indicated that annual production of 600 000 tonnes could be sold. These results justify to reopen the quarry. In order to overcome environmental problems, bench blasting production method instead of gallery blasting has been planned. This method enables to design a drilling blasting pattern that will almost result in no ground vibrations.

Observed mineral assemblages in the Mt. Lyell copper deposit can be correlated with phase equilibrium investigations in the systems Cu-Fe-S and Fe-Zn-S. The trend of crystallization (or paragenetic sequence) of the ores is reflected in a progressive increase in the Cu: Fe and metal: sulphur ratios of the assemblages. This trend agrees with the regional zoning of the district. Tentative relationships between the paragenetic sequence, sulphur vapour pressure, and temperature are presented graphically. The absence of a suitable geological thermometer prevents precise elucidation of the range of temperatures and pressures which existed during crystallization.INTRODUCTIONRecent phase equilibrium investigations of metal-sulphur systems at the Geophysical Laboratory, Washington, D.C. provide valuable information on the stability relations of a number of important sulphide minerals. This data, when applied to natural ore deposits, may be expected to clarify two special problems which confront the ore petrologist seeking to interpret observed data in terms of a particular physical and chemical environment of ore deposition. These two problems are the sequence of formation of sulphide minerals (commonly designated the paragenetic sequence) and an elucidation of the range of temperatures and pressures which existed during crystallization. Coupling between deformation processes and rock permeability is a major factor influencing the architecture of fluid migration and the localisation of ore deposition in several types of hydrothermal ore systems in middle to upper crustal regimes. Permeability in many hydrothermal systems is controlled by a dynamic competition between deformation-induced porosity-creation processes and porosity-destruction processes. Localisation of deformation within faults, fractures and shear zones leads to flow localisation, with large-scale flow systems forming when active faults and shear zones link to create percolation networks. Numerical modelling techniques are used to explore the growth of fracture networks and evolution of network connectivity during progressive deformation. Initial results indicate that networks reach a percolation threshold at very low strains. Near the percolation threshold, flow is localised along a small proportion of the total fracture population and favours localised ore deposition. At higher strains, flow is distributed more widely throughout the fracture population and may provide reduced potential for production of high-grade deposits. The distribution of mesothermal gold deposits along a small subset of the total population of co-active faults and shear zones in the Archaean Yilgarn Craton in Western Australia indicates that some hydrothermal systems maintain themselves near the percolation threshold for a substantial part of the lifetime of the system. Fluid-driven growth of fault/fracture/shear networks may lead them to self-organise near the percolation threshold.

The behaviour of iron ore granules in the feeding process of sintering is significantly influenced by the material properties of the granulated mix. Therefore, the measurement of key material properties of the iron ore granulated mix is indispensable prior to the simulation of the sintering process based on the discrete element method (DEM). In this paper, three key property parameters of the iron ore granulated mix, apparent density, elastic modulus and rolling friction coefficient, were measured in laboratory-scale experiments. For different sintering processes, the moisture content of the granulated mix normally varies according to the specific requirements for granule size distribution and operating conditions. Therefore, understanding the effect of moisture content on the property parameters of iron ore granules is very helpful in accurately determining the property parameters for DEM simulation work. In this paper, six groups of iron ore granule samples with six levels of moisture contents were prepared through granulation and the trends in apparent density, elastic modulus and rolling friction coefficient with the increase of moisture content were plotted and analysed based on the measurement results. The results show that as moisture increases from 6.9 per cent to 9.1 per cent, the apparent density decreases from about 3000 to 2800 kg/m3. With moisture increasing within the same range, the elastic modulus first decreases from over 200 MPa to below 100 MPa and then reaches a relative constant value of about 40 MPa at higher moisture contents. Rolling friction coefficients are measured using two methods with both indicating a similar trend, with the rolling friction coefficient first decreasing and then rising as moisture increases from 6.9 per cent to 9.1 per cent. Industrial minerals contribute about 50% of the NZ$1.2 billion generated annually by the minerals industry in New Zealand. The value is supplemented by a further NZ$500 million of minerals imported to supply our vital agricultural and industrial activity. As globalisation of the world's economy precedes, sources of minerals are being processed by fewer companies giving an ever-increasing control over global markets. If only to protect its primary production New Zealand needs to aggressively develop its mineral resources. The successful development of a deposit requires identification of the preferred market. While low-value aggregates dominate New Zealand industrial mineral production it is more specialised minerals supplied to the manufacturing and industrial sectors that provide more value per tonne. Minerals that have highly desirable intrinsic properties, or through value-added processing provide desirable properties, have the ability to fill niche markets both locally and overseas. Research and development towards enhancement or creation of desirable mineral properties could benefit New Zealand with both increased mineral potential and export of technological information. But, it is nearly always the market not the resource that dictates the viability of an industrial mineral and, with the globalisation of industrial mineral markets resulting in fewer but larger companies, any supplier must be ready to explore niche markets in order to compete on a more global basis.

The dominant heat loads in a deep underground mine are the surrounding rock mass, autocompression and machinery. In addition heat can be contributed to by other sources. Many block cave, sublevel cave operations and coalmines utilise conveyors to transport broken rock out of mine, in some cases completely, in others in combination with other forms of transport. This broken rock can be loaded onto the conveyor at virgin rock temperature and can represent a major heat input to the ventilation airflow as it is transported out of the mine. The purpose of this paper is to review established knowledge regarding heat flow, from conveyed rock to determine the main factors influencing the heat flow and to develop a methodology for predicting heat flow from caved rock. Final mine sealing of BMA’s Crinum North mine, near Emerald, Queensland was undertaken in December 2015. Due to the benign atmospheric environment at Crinum North, the Queensland Mines Rescue Service (QMRS) Górniczy Agregat Gasniczy (GAG) unit was utilised to reduce oxygen levels throughout the underground atmosphere as part of the final sealing process.The GAG was utilised by way of a vertical borehole from the surface to seam to successfully reduce oxygen levels throughout the underground mine workings. Application of the GAG unit enabled the underground mine to be classified as stable and inert within days of the GAG operation, and subsequently cease gas monitoring at Crinum North. The data and information obtained from this activity provides valuable information to the underground coal mining industry on successful application of the GAG in realistic situations.This paper discusses the strategy used for sealing, the assisted inertisation and the results obtained from the application of the GAG unit. It discusses both the overall results and gives a detailed review of the gas monitoring data obtained via the tube bundle and real-time system, both during and following the use of the GAG unit.Gas monitoring results obtained and the strategy used are critical to share with the industry to obtain a better understanding of how the GAG unit works, and how it can be applied for emergency preparedness, emergency response or planned inertisation.CITATION:Westthorp, E, 2017. Paradoxically, the increased emphasis on water treatment in mining has generated a new problem û hypersaline brines. Currently brines are either disposed of into ash systems, lined evaporation ponds or hazardous waste sites. Evaporative crystallisation (EC) is an alternative, but the energy requirements can be prohibitive and the salt product is still a waste that must be disposed of. Eutectic freeze crystallisation (EFC) is an alternative technology that is capable of separating aqueous solutions into pure water (as ice) and pure, solidified solutes. It is highly energy efficient and does not depend on the introduction of any solvents. In addition, the simultaneous production of pure ice and potentially saleable pure salt(s) is a major advantage. Although EFC has been shown to be effective in separating a single salt and water, it is still in the early stages of being applied to the multi-component hypersaline brines that are typical of reverse osmosis retentates generated by mining and extractive metallurgy.This paper presents an EFC brine treatment protocol developed by the Crystallisation and Precipitation Unit at the University of Cape Town. The protocol incorporates brine analysis, thermodynamic modelling to establish which salts will freeze out and at which temperatures, followed by experimental studies to determine the kinetic parameters, such as nucleation temperatures, salt yields and crystal purity.Case studies showing the application of EFC for the purification of typical brines containing high levels of sodium, chlorine, sulfate and ammonia (Brine 1) and a mixture of sodium and magnesium sulfate (Brine 2) are covered. Modelling tools were applied to describe the phase behaviour of the multi-component saline systems under different process conditions. Experimental validation was carried out using synthetic brines of different (and increasingly complex) compositions. The results showed that EFC could be used to selectively recover the sodium as a sodium sulfate salt from both different brines. The simulation tools were useful in the analysis and understanding of the process.A preliminary economic analysis showed that the operating costs for EC were approximately nine times those for EFC, but the capital costs were much less- equipment for EC cost about half that of EFC. However, it is important to note that the capital cost calculations for EC are based on a technology that is already well established and with only relatively marginal future equipment cost savings expected. In contrast, EFC is a new technology, with significant future technology improvements expected.

Thermal method of diagnostic as a nondestructive monitoring is based on data logging of infrared radiation from heated surface or from the associated thermal field. Monitoring of gearcases and motors hidden faults, such as, bearing degradation (deep-seated wears and tears, fretting wear, spalling and jamming solids of revolution) is closely related to high variations in temperature. The use of portable thermal imaging devices provides considerable advantages due to: easy remote access to the unit under test even when it is operating; minimum time required to obtain information and an opportunity for a real-time diagnosis of the tested subject's condition.
