Last August, American Commercial Barge Line Co. (ACBL) began moving coal from mines on the old Camp Breckinridge property in Western Kentucky to TVA's new 2600 MW steam plant at Cumberland City, Tenn. By April of 1973, this movement will reach a level of 7 million tpy. TVA bought the coal rights to this property from the General Services Administration in 1965 for approximately $7 million and is now in possession of reserves containing about 120 million tons of recoverable No. 9 coal, and about the same recoverable amount of No. 11 coal. TVA then contracted through competitive bidding with Peabody Coal Co. to mine the No. 9 seam through two slope shafts. The mines are about 300-ft deep and are separated by the one major fault on this property. The mine portals are approximately 3 ½ mi apart, with the northern portal being over nine miles distant from the Ohio River.

ORDINARILY age-hardening is thought of as being associated with a limited solubility of one metal in another. Much less has been written about the type of age-hardening that attends the formation of superstructures. Solid solutions generally have a disordered or random arrangement of atoms; that is to say, in a unit cell, such as that of the face-centered cubic lattice, there is no distinction between atomic sites. Atoms of a given metal may occupy cube corners or face centers. Under certain conditions, however, some alloys develop what is known as an ordered structure. In this case, cube corners would be occupied by only one type of atom and face centers by another type, Associated with this ordering process are many interesting changes in physical and electrical properties. Moreover, in many instances the alloys become susceptible to age-hardening. From the evidence now to be described, it appears that age-hardening in 14-carat gold alloys is due to the formation of both a super-structure and a precipitate. Alloys of the metals gold, silver and copper were known in antiquity. The available knowledge regarding their constitution has been ably summarized and extended by Sterner-Rainer,1 Janecke,2 Carter,3 Wise,4 and Coleman.5 Despite the long familiarity with these alloys and the numerous investigations of their properties that have been made, there is still much that remains unexplained. It has been known for a long time that the hardness of these alloys is closely related to the rate of cooling, Similar changes have been observed in the binary gold-copper system,6 one alloy of which corresponding to the formula Cu3Au, has been the subject of a careful and competent report by the English investigators, Sykes and Evans.7 They have established the fact that the shift of atoms from the ordered to the disordered condition takes place in some critical temperature range. At temperatures above the critical range the structure is random, and at temperatures below it the structure is ordered. No difference between these two structures is revealed by the microscope. Both have a face-centered cubic lattice and complete solubility, so that there is no evidence to suggest that the changes in properties are associated with a phase change, The more slowly the alloy is cooled, the higher is the degree to which the ordering process proceeds and the more marked is the increase in hardness. As experimental data were accumulated on 14-carat gold alloys, several contradictions arose. Certain observations tended to confirm the existence of a superstructure, while other observations seemed to be inconsistent with such a transformation. The first commercially available portable gamma ray-neutron beryllium detector, the Rerylometer, was developed by the same group that developed the first practical portable scintillation counter, the Scintillo-meter. This group includes Professor George Brownell, of the Geology Department of the University of Manitoba in winnipeg, and his associates, K. I. Roulston, R. w. Pringle, and R. L. Funt, of the Physics and Engineering Departments of the University of Manitoba. A prototype model was tested in the field by Dr. Brownell during the summer of 1958. Commercial production was undertaken shortly thereafter by Nuclear Enterprises Ltd., of Winnipeg, and a license for manufacture and distribution in the U.S. was granted to Isotopes Specialties Co., of Burbank, California, a division of Nuclear Corporation of America. Early in 1959, we were retained by the 'Mining Division of Minerva Oil Co. to Legin a search throughout North America for minable deposits of beryllium, and to train members of their permanent staff to continue the program. The project included literature sur-veys, interviews with members of various federal, state, and provincial agencies, scanning of our own collection of suites of specimens from various mineral occurrences, and the examination of deposits in the field. The value of a beryllium detector to this program was obvious and arrangements were made to procure one as soon as possible, which resulted in our obtaining and using the first instrument that was produced commercially in the U. S. In addition to the commercially available Berylometer, Mr. William Vaughan and his associates, of the U. S. Geological Survey Geophysics Division, in Denver, have developed and tested several experimental instruments based on the same principles. DETECTOR Principles The detection of beryllium is based on the fact that "hard" gamma rays (1.6 MEV and geater), such as those produced by Antimony convert ordinary beryllium (Be9) to Be8 , with the release of a neutron. The neutrons are counted by a scintillator designed to favor neutron responses while suppressing those of gamma rays. 'The instrument is completely selective for beryllium. No other element can interfere. Instrunlentation The Rerylometer itself, which is cylindrical, is about 8 inches in diameter, 13 inches high, and weighs about 11 pounds. (Figs. 1, 2). The principal components include: 1. A disc of wax to moderate (or "thermalize") neutrons. 2. A boron-enriched polyester-zinc-sulphide fluorescent screen. This material produces strong flashes when struck by thermalized neutrons but only weak flashes from gamma rays. 3. A photomultiplier tube. 4. An electronic circuit, complete with one srnall 71/2-volt dry battery. This paper presents the results of a complete reservoir studv designed to determine a sound economic program for the conservation of oil and gas in the Pickton field, Hopkins County, Texas. The Pickton field produces from the Bacon Lime with all indications of the study being that production is predominately by dissolved-gas drive. Calculations of the total ultimate recovery to be expected under primary operations indicated only 16.7 per cent of the oil originally in place would be recovered. This unusually low recovery is due to the type of drive operating and the extremely high dissolved gas-oil ratio and shrinkage. Results are presented for six plans of returning gas to the reservoir, evaluated to determine (1) comparative recoveries and economics of (a) returning gas at a constant rate by supplementing Pickton gas with extraneous gas during the early portion of the operation, and (b) conventional gas-return operations without using extraneous gas, and (2) the optimum size of compressor plant for each type of pressure maintenance. The over-all economic program considers, for either type pressure maintenance operation. a gasoline plant to process the unusually rich casinghead gas. Since pressure maintenance will disturb equities, pooling of royalties is in the case of Pickton a prerequisite to conservation of oil by this type of operation, both from an economic and legal standpoint. In the event pooling of royalties cannot be achieved, the study considers a gasoline plant to operate under a modified primary production operation which will make the conservation of gas possible. INTRODUCTION The Pickton field, located in Hopkins County, Texas. was discovered in November, 1944. by the completion of Humble's C. D. Nichols 1, in the Bacon lime of the Lower Glen Rose formation, through perforations from 7,888 to 7.896 feet. The well initially produced 50.2 API gravity oil with a gas-oil ratio of 1,350 cubic feet per barrel. Subsurface samples of the reservoir fluid obtained soon after completion of the discovery well showed that the Pickton crude is unique in that it has an extremely high dissolved gas-oil ratio and is subject to very severe shrinkage. Calculations of the future behavior of the Pickton reservoir indicated that ultimate oil recovery by primary operations would be 3,269,000 barrels, representing only 16.7 per cent of the oil in place (19,577,000 stock-tank barrels), and that recovery could be substantially increased by returning the produced gas. The cumulative production of 1,382,694 barrels on November 1: 1947, amounted to 42.3 per cent of the estimated ultimate oil recovery from primary operations. The purpose of this study is to determine and evaluate the optimum program for conservation of oil and gas in the Pick-ton field, including the desirability of conducting gas-return operations and of installing a gasoline plant. The effect of such variables as feed size, particle shape, cleavage, and hardness on the relative proportion of impact, abrasion, and chipping events in a tumbling mill is demonstrated. The concept of an average event, which is a combination of the three comminution mechanisms, is introduced. It is postulated that the average event in a particular mill determines not only the size distribution but also the energy-size reduction relationship for the comminution process. Fragmentation of particles in tumbling mills appears to result from a combination of impact, abrasion, and chipping grinding.' The relative rates of size reduction attributable to any of the basic grinding mechanisms must depend upon a number of variables, such as feed size, particle shape, hardness, and the number and kind of particles in the mill. The purpose of this paper is to show experimentally how these variables in the properties of materials affect the size distributions obtained by grinding the material's in a laboratory tumbling mill. The resulting size distributions will be intetpreted in terms of a combination of three comminution mechanisms. METHODS AND MATERIALS In this study, minerals of widely differing properties were ground either separately or as mixtures in laboratory mills using rods or balls for grinding media. The materials used include quartz, Tuolomne, limestone (99.8% CaCO3), barite, corundum, galena, pyrite, glass beads, and crushed glass. The mill used was 8 in. in diam. and 9-1/4 in. long. For the ball milling tests, 17.6 kg of steel balls (36: 7/8 in. balls, 178: 1 in. balls, and 44: 1-1/8 to 1-1/4 in. balls) were used. For the rod milling experiments, 17.6 kg of steel rods 9-1/16 in. long (25: 5/8 in., 10: 3/4 in., and 5: 7/8 in. in diam.) were used. In each test, 1 kg of solids were ground wet at 60% solids at 77 rpm. In all cases except where otherwise specified, the feed to the mill was 4 x 8 mesh material. Size distributions of the ground products were determined by a wet-dry sieving procedure with Tyler series sieves. Size distributions of mixed products containing limestone were determined by dissolving the limestone with acid and sizing the residue. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION If the size distribution of the product from a tumbling mill depends upon the relative proportion of impact and attrition (abrasion and chipping) events, altering the grinding conditions may change these proportions and consequently alter the size distribution of the product. Data to illustrate this point can be taken from Gaudin's classic 1926 paper.2 In one series of experiments, Gaudin ground quartz of different initial sizes for four hours in a laboratory ball mill with 7/8-in. balls. In Fig. 1, his data are reproduced as the cumulative fraction finer than the stated size for the following initial feed sizes: 13.3 x 9.4 mm, 6.7 x 4.7 mm, 2.6 x 1.6 mm, and 0.83 x 0.59 mm. The author applies the theory of hydrodynamic stability to fluid flow in porous media and concludes that the displacement of miscible liquids is stable if the stability coefficient, as defined by Eq. 19.2 or Eq. 27.0, is positive. The conclusion is invalid, however, since it is based on a faulty argument. To demonstrate this, the reader is referred to Eqs. 4.1 through 4.5 of the paper which describe, in differential form, the first-order disturbances c, u, v, w and p. In these same equations, cx, cz, gl, g3 and are functions of the stable concentration c. This concentration c is known and depends on x, z and t (the author assumes cy = 0). It follows that cx, cz, gl, g3 and µ are also functions of x, z and t. With this in mind, we turn to Eqs. 8.1 through 8.5 which were derived from Eqs. 4.1 through 4.5 by substituting Eq. 6.0. The significance of this substitution is that the author thereby limits the solutions of Eqs. 4.1 through 4.5 to equations of the form of Eq. 6.0. Eqs. 8.1 through 8.5 represent an infinite linear system with five unknowns: c, u, v, w and p. The coefficients cx, cz, gl, g3 and µ in this system are known at each point and at each instant; the coefficients containing derivatives of f are unknown. If this infinite linear system in c, u, v, w and p is to have a nontrivial solution, then it is indeed necessary (as the author states) that the determinant of the coefficient matrix of Eqs. 8.1 through 8.5, i.e., ( A 1, be equal to zero. This condition, however, is not sufficient. A non-trivial solution exists if, and only if, the rank of the coefficient matrix of the entire infinite system is smaller than five. In other words. all minors of order five must vanish and only if all the coefficients in Eqs. 8.1 through 8.5 are constant is this equivalent to the condition |A| =0. Constant coefficients means that gl, g3 and µ, for instance, are constant; and, since they depend on c it follows that c must be constant. We conclude that the condition I A I = 0, on which the author bases his calculations, is necessary and sufficient for a nontrivial solution only if the concentration c is constant. In other words, the author does not investigate the stability of a miscible displacement but, rather, only the stability of the flow of a homogeneous liquid. IN the past quarter century the seismograph has played an increasingly important role in evaluating vibratory effects transmitted to adjacent communities by industrial blasting operations. In this period research has advanced through two major phases—from falling pin seismometers to three-component recording seismographs. The initial phase of this research is now regarded as the era of recording, during which the seismograph merely recorded occasional events. It has emerged from this stage into the era of control and analysis and in this later period has been recognized as a full-fledged industrial tool. Although the falling pin machines of earlier years indicated probable amplitudes of industrial blasting vibrations, they gave no reliable measure of such displacements, nor did they provide essential information concerning direction or frequency of motion. The first contribution of the three-component recording seismograph was the weight-for-distance formula developed by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. This empirical formula enabled users of commercial explosives to determine beforehand the probable vibratory effects of a blast when the weight of the explosives charge and the distance from the shot point were known. This formula has withstood the test of time and is still applicable for blasts detonated by instantaneous methods. The second major contribution of the three-component recording seismograph followed the introduction in 1945 of short period or millisecond delay detonation. This might be described as a two-stage contribution, the first of which revealed a 50 pct reduction in the vibration magnitude when millisecond detonation was used rather than instantaneous discharge. This second part of this double contribution led to the discovery of the vibration dip phenomena, see Fig. 1. In Fig. 1 the horizontal coordinates indicate the displacements amplitude in inches, and the vertical coordinates, the explosive weight in pounds. The top curve is that of the U. S. Bureau of Mines for instantaneous detonation. Its curvature conforms to the two-thirds power of the explosive weight as provided in the weight-for-distance formula; hence the vibratory effects increase in proportion to an increase in the explosive charge. If the other curves shown below are temporarily disregarded, it may be considered that the entire area below this top curve represents both useful and waste energy. As mentioned previously, when millisecond delay detonation was first investigated it was found that in general the U. S. Bureau of Mines curve could be decreased by about 50 pct, or to the position of the middle curve. At the outset it was assumed that this curve would likewise increase in some proportion to the explosive charge, as did the top curve, that is, the curve would indicate a continuous upswing. NDUSTRY needs a generally applicable means of defining average grain size and grain size distribution. Students of sediments hade explored this field, employing methods that might also prove useful in engineering problems. Before attempting to solve specific problems it is well to review the derivation of commonly used grade scales and the reasons for their selection. This aspect of the problem seems largely to have been lost, and a review of basic factors may suggest causes for failures in using size analysis data. Three facts are implicit in selection of a grade scale: 1) Most particulate mixtures are continuous distributions of sizes, and any grade scale that may be employed is an arbitrary means of visualizing that distribution. 2) For purely descriptive purposes, any grade scale, regardless of the rationality of the class intervals, will be satisfactory if it is accepted by a sufficient number of workers. 3) For analytical purposes, class intervals must be small enough to define the continuous distribution accurately. Further, where statistical studies are involved, a fixed relationship should exist between classes or grades. An argument in favor of geometrically related size grades lies in the fact that most particulate mixtures contain such a wide range of sizes that use of an arithmetic diameter scale is practically impossible. Udden, who recognized this fact in 1898,' proposed one of the first grade scales based on a regular geometrical interval. Udden used 1 mm as his basic diameter and a ratio of 2 (or 1/2) between classes. In 1922 Wentworth2 re-examined Udden's grade scale, retaining the same class interval and basic diameter, but extending the scale in both directions and renaming the classes. In 1930 (Ref. 3, p. 82) the American Society of Testing Materials proposed what is now known as the U.S. Standard fine sieve series, also based on the 1 mm diam, with a v2 ratio between sieves. This, then, is a one fourth Udden-Wentworth series in the sizes below the 4 mesh sieve. The U.S. Standard coarse sieve departs from the 1 mm base and uses inches; hence it is not a direct continuation of the fine series. The U.S. Standard series would thus seem to possess all the attributes of a good grade scale, which it is. It has a large number of classes (sieves). in fact too many for practical use in its entirety. This v2 subdivision of the Wentworth grades has led to the common use of two v2 sieve series, the half-Wentworth and the engineers' series. Geologists and sedimentologists favor the half Wentworth, or 18, 25, 35, 45 sieves, etc., whereas the engineers, preferring round numbers, utilize the other half of the U.S. Standard grade scale in the 16, 20, 30, 40 sieves, etc. The fixed geometrical ratio between classes is an advantage in statistical analysis, but the unequal classes cause some complications in calculations. This is especially true when moment measures are used. It was to simplify these calculations that Krumbein in 1934 devised the phi scale. Phi is defined as being equal to —log2 of the diameter in millimeters. Selection of logarithms to the base 2 relate the phi scale directly to the Wentworth grade scale in such a manner that the whole or fractional diameter values 2, 1, 1/2, 1/4 mm, etc., become rational whole numbers, —1, 0,1, 2, etc. Since this is an arithmetic rather than geometric series, calculations are facilitated. When the logarithm is multiplied by —1 the phi values below 1 mm become positive, those coarser than 1 mm negative. Because of its relationship to the Wentworth grade scale (and in turn to the U.S. Standard fine sieve series) it is not necessary to use the transformation equation to calculate the phi value for each individual sieve; this can be done graphically as shown in Fig. 1. It should be noted that this graph may be extended in either direction to include the range of sizes most commonly used by the individual worker. Application to Statistical Analysis Any attempt at systematically relating size analysis data to properties involves a statistical study whether it is recognized as such or not. Since this is true it would seem more logical to use measures and devices related to the general body of statistical theory. Several methods are available for studying particulate mixtures. One of the most commonly employed, and also the most often misused, is the histogram or block diagram. If its limitations are recognized and provided for, the histogram is a very useful tool. According to conventional practice, the bars of equal width are plotted and the values noted in terms of diameters, when in point of fact, log diameter is implied by such notation. Further, the histogram is sensitive to choice of grade scale and size of class interval, either of which may color the result. Grade scales whose classes are not related by fixed intervals are particularly difficult. Another basic weakness of the histogram is that it pictures a continuous distribution as a series of discrete grades.

TOTAL DIRECT IMPACT The uranium mining industry's principal economic impacts on the Texas economy are the result of three flows of money from the industry into the remainder of the state's economy. These three are: (1) money paid to individuals (personal income) ; (2) money paid to other businesses (business income); and (3) money paid to state and local governments (government revenues). As these direct payments from the uranium industry to various other sectors of the Texas economy subsequently circulate and recirculate within the state, the indirect effects of uranium mining's direct impacts multiply to reach amounts significantly higher than the direct income flows alone. Over the past decade, the uranium mining industry has substantially increased its role as a provider of jobs, personal income, business income, and government revenues in Texas. The growth has come almost exclusively in a largely rural, seven-county area that lies within the triangle formed by the Laredo, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi metropolitan areas. The uranium mining industry, in fact, has been the major dynamic element in this rural area despite relative stagnation in most of the region's other basic economic sectors. Over the three years from 1976 to 1978, the South Texas uranium mining industry directly contributed a total of $115 million to the economy of the seven- county region in which it operated and $164 million to the economy of the entire state of Texas. In 1979 alone, the total direct contribution of the industry to the Texas economy had climbed to $124 million in personal, business, and government income. PERSONAL INCOME IMPACT In the period from 1976 through 1978, the South Texas uranium mining industry provided an average of $12.5 million in personal income each year directly to residents of Atascosa, Bee, Duval , Karnes, Live Oak, McMullen, and Webb counties -- the seven Texas' counties that make up the South Texas Uranium Belt. A1 though 84 percent of this resulted from the employment of area residents in uranium industry jobs, some amounts were also provided by the payment of rents and royalties to land owners for the use of their land and mineral rights in uranium mining operations. In 1979, the uranium industry provided approximately $38 million to residents of the Uranium Belt and the rest of Texas. This was more than double the average of $16.1 million provided to Texas residents during the 1976 to 1978 period. The full importance of the uranium industry as a source of personal income, however, should not be reckoned merely by the amount of wages and salaries that it pays directly to its own employees, nor by its rent and royalty payments paid directly to land and mineral rights owners living in Texas. The added payments that the industry makes directly to other Texas businesses and state and local governments in Texas are themselves converted into personal income as those business firms and government units in turn pay their employees. All of the direct income payments made by the uranium industry circulate and recirculate within the state's economy, multiplying their impact as they go, until they eventually all leak out of the state as federal taxes or as payments to individuals or businesses located outside of Texas. The combined circulation and recirculation of the direct personal, business, and government income that was provided by the-uranium industry in Texas during 1976, 1977, and 1978 resulted in an average annual amount of indirect personal income of more than $83 mill ion. This alone was $20 mill ion more than the industry's average annual sales during the same years. The total of combined direct and indirect personal income contributed to the Texas economy by the uranium mining industry in that same three-year period thus averaged almost $100 million annually. In 1979, the amount of indirect personal income contributed to the Texas economy by the circulation of uranium mining's direct contributions had risen to about $196 million, more than double the average of the previous three years. The combined direct and in- direct personal income impact in 1979 thus amounted to $234 million. BUSINESS INCOME IMPACT The income provided directly to other Texas business firms through the purchase of needed goods and services by the uranium industry has been twice as big as the industry's payrolls. In 1976, 1977, and 1978, the South Texas uranium industry spent an average of almost $36 million each year to buy both goods and services from other Texas businesses. By 1979, this direct contribution to the Texas economy had swollen to $76 million. The biggest share of the uranium industry's payments to other businesses have gone to contracting firms, including both construction firms and those providing specialized mining services. In the past four years, about 40 percent of the direct payments made by Texas uranium producers to other Texas firms have been to contractors. Texas wholesale and retail firms have also shared in the business sales provided by the South Texas uranium mining industry. Over the past four years, Texas wholesale and retail trade businesses have accounted for about 34 percent of the uranium mining industry's purchases from other Texas businesses. Public utilities firms have received another six per- cent, while Texas manufacturers and transportation firms have accounted for about five percent each. A platelet form of zirconium hydride was found in zirconium and ZY-1 wt pct U single crystals containing hydvogen in the range of 50 to 100 ppm. The habit planes for the hydride plateletg in the zirconium crystals were found to be {1012}, {1121}, and (1122) while the habit planes in the ZY-1 wt pct U crystals were {1121), {1123}, and (1.231). With the exception of the {1231} plane, these have been identified as the twin planes in zirconium. The different effect of hydridc on the mechanical puoperlies of zirconium at high and low strain rates has been explained in terms of the defornzation mechanism and the habit planes of the hydride. ZIRCONIUM and zirconium-base alloys are considered for many nuclear reactor applications, where the pick-up of hydrogen is a distinct possibility, if not an unavoidable occurrence. An excellent example of this is the absorption of hydrogen by zirconium and its alloys during aqueous corrosion, where as much as 30 pct of the hydrogen produced by the corrosion reaction is picked up by the metal. Under the proper conditions, the absorbed hydrogen would precipitate as zirconium hydride and consequently alter the mechanical and physical properties of the zirconium-base alloys. The knowledge obtained from a study of the crystallographic aspects of the hydride precipitation is necessary for the interpretation of the observed changes in the mechanical and physical properties. The deleterious effect of hydrogen on zirconium-base materials is not always observed in normal slow tensile loadings at or above room temperature, but becomes immediately obvious under impact loading, where the energy absorbed decreases with increasing hydrogen content,' and in notched specimens where triaxial loadings are attained.2 This effect is of serious consequence in the applications of Zr where shock loads or high strain rates are experienced. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the crystallographic planes of the Zr and Zr-1 wt pct U matrices upon which zirconium hydride will precipitate and to correlate these with the observed mechanical property data. PROCEDURE Crystal Growth—Single crystals of Zr and Zr-1 wt pct U alloy were used in this investigation. The Zr crystals were made from sponge that had a typical analysis as shown in Table I. Large grains were grown in this material by rapid cooling an arc-melted charge in a button furnace. This operation undoubtedly lowered the volatile impurity concentration below those listed in Table I. Back-reflection Laue patterns of these large grains showed the presence of considerable substructure and lattice distortion within each grain. It was found that an 18-day anneal in an argon atmosphere at 840°C (a high a heat-treatment) followed by furnace cooling, resulted in the further growth of the large grains and removed the detectable substructure ana lattice distortion. Equiaxed crystals with a cube edge of approximately 1/4 in. were produced in this manner. Large crystals of Zircaloy-2 (1.5 wt pct Sn, 0.15 wt pct Fe, 0.1 wt pct Cr, 0.05 wt pct Ni) also were produced by this technique but the large amount of substructure formed could not be removed by annealing. The Zr-1 wt pct U solid solution crystals were produced from an alloy rod consisting of Westing-house-Foote hafnium-free crystal bar zirconium and depleted uranium. The chemical analysis of the alloy is also given in Table I. Three-inch sections were cut from an 0.120-in.-diameter alloy rod and tapered to a fine point on each end. The samples were sealed in evacuated Vycor tubes, homogenized for 5 hr at 1000°C in the ß-phase field, and slowly lowered in a gradient furnace into the a phase (800°C), annealed for 60 hr at this temperature to produce grain growth and furnace cooled. This technique produced large grains approximately 1/2 to 3/4 in. long over the entire cross section of the rod, which were free of observable substructure. Metallographic examination up to X1000 did not show the existence of any second phase in these grains. Crystal Orientation—All crystals were abraded on fine emery paper to produce two flat surfaces 90 deg to each other. The crystals were analyzed by the standard Back-Reflection Laue technique to obtain the crystal orientation with respect to the abraded surfaces. The Back-Reflection Laue Photograms of all crystals used were clear and sharp indicating that the crystals were free from any substructure that could be detected by these means. Hydriding—Only samples containing four to five grains were used for hydriding. Samples that exhibited fine grained patches were discarded. The samples were hydrided using the following technique. The problem of estimating the precision of systematic samples from a mineral deposit is attacked by interpolating the quality, or other attribute measured, by using Fourier approximation. Such approximation using trigonometric functions yields a particularly simple expression for the variance of the mean value of the attribute sampled. The increasing volume of publication in which the science of statistics has been applied to the problem of predicting the quality of an ore deposit from sets of samples taken from it might lead one to believe that engineering judgment can be replaced by statistics. There is, in fact, an implicit application of the principle of indifference or of "no advance knowledge" which has been discredited in modern statistical theory and practice. These pages will show that it is not always advantageous, efficient, or safe to apply this principle. This problem will be dealt with by using series of orthonormal functions to describe the distribution of the quality of ore in space as contrasted with the more commonly used distribution of quality as a frequency function. Mining engineers are rarely well acquainted with the use of such series or of the functions comprising them. These uses are commonplace in the fields of communication and information theory and it is not surprising that applications taken from these fields should be found appropriate for the analysis of the information contained in a set of samples from an ore deposit. It is hoped that presentation of the following basic, but incomplete, results will generate wider interest in this method and a fuller development of it as well as of the necessary computational techniques. FUNDAMENTAL PREMISES Random variables in the strictest sense are not very common in mine sampling. The sets of samples are almost always taken systematically and are, hence, not subject to all the laws governing random events. Therefore, unless there is indeed random experimental error in the determinations of quality, the treatment of systematic samples of n members as though they were random samples of n members often leads to calculation of confidence limits for the mean quality which are larger than they should be with the result that unnecessary additional sampling is done. The reason for this will emerge in the following discussion leading to Eq. 24 and its generalization. In order to inquire into such questions on a rigorous basis and at the same time avoid arithmetic complications that would obscure the concepts involved, a one dimensional distribution of quality will be assumed. Since the advent of the first airborne electromagnetic system, it has been evident that such systems were inherently limited to shallow depths of exploration of the orderof 100 to 200 feet. Hence in 1948 the author and his associates commenced a study of the feasibility of applying natural audio frequency magnetic fields to investigation of the electrical properties of the subsurface in order to provide a system capable of overcoming this limitation. This research culminated, in the summer of 1958, in the development of a new airborne prospecting device — AFMAG. This device has detected surface massive sulphide bodies while flown at heights as great as 3000 feet. Hence, by inference, it is deduced that it could find similar sulphide bodies if they were buried 2500 feet below surface and the aircraft flown at 500 feet. Thus a considerable improvement over conventional airborne electro-magnetic systems is obtainable with AFMAG. Airborne exploration in mountainous terrain involving deep valley fill now becomes possible. Examples are presented of the results of actual airborne AFMAG test surveys over known deposits of massive sulphide mineralization. Interpretation of the data is discussed with particular reference to the knowledge of size, dip, depth, depth extent, and conductivity of causative bodies as deduced from the flight records. The possibility of mapping major geologic structures, for both mining and oil exploration purposes, is discussed with the aid of examples of airborne AFMAG data. INTRODUCTION Electrical prospecting with natural audio frequency electromagnetic waves as a source has, within the last three years, become a practical reality. Both airborne and ground survey instruments under the trademark "AFMAG" (for audio frequency magnetics) have been used successfully in the search for conductive mineral deposits. It is the object of this paper to discuss the principles of airborne AFMAG and to illustrate its application by means of examples obtained over known geological situations. WHY AFMAG? In view of the large number of good airborne electromagnetic systems available for purchase or contract surveying, one may well ask, "Why another new system?". Primarily the answer lies in the fact that AFMAG does not suffer from the very limited depth of exploration available with, and inherent in, any conventional airborne electromagnetic system. AFMAG is not conventional insofar as an artificial transmitter is not required. Only a receiving and detecting device is employed. The electromagnetic fields measured are those from millions of electrical discharges in the atmosphere (e.g;..- lightning strokes). Their random distribution in time and space make these fields difficult to employ and it is only with recent advances in the electronics of geophysical instrumentation that this has become possible. Nonsteady-state flow of slightly compressible liquids in porous media of non-uniform properties has been the subject of a number of recent studies. Most of these studies considered one-dimensional flow in systems with cylindrical geometry and with the properties of the porous medium varying with radial distance only. A. Houpeurt' studied the problem in its general form by examining the solutions of the differential equation, In Eq. 1, the permeability k and the porosity + are arbitrary functions of radial distance. Houpeurt concluded that, except for special forms of the functions k and the problem is not well suited for mathematical treatment, but lends itself to high-speed digital computation. Carslaw and Jaeger' discussed the solution of Eq. 1 for the case in which the permeability varies as a power of the radial distance. P. Albert3 studied analytically the pseudo steady-state solutions in systems of finite radial extent and non-uniform properties. He also obtained some numerical solutions for nonsteady-state flow using a high-speed computer. William Hurst4 examined the interference pressure drop due to a point sink located in an infinite system consisting of two permeability regions in series. In this case, the permeability changed at a radial distance r from the point sink. INTERFERENCE BETWEEN OIL FIELDS IN A NON-UNIFORM AQUIFER The interference pressure drop for oil fields located in an extensive aquifer of uniform properties is discussed in a number of places in the literature. This work considers the interference pressure drop for oil fields located in a non-uniform extensive aquifer comprising two regions of different properties as shown in Fig. 1. Region I of the aquifer extends from which is the radius of Oil Field A, to ar,,, where a>1. It has permeability k,, porosity +, and effective compressibility c,. Oil Field B is located in Region II which extends from ar, to infinity and has different properties from those of Region I, but the same formation thickness h. Region II has permeability k2, porosity and effective compressibility c2. The choice of this type of aquifer should not imply that it is of frequent occurrence. It is chosen primarily to illustrate the effects of non-uniform aquifer properties on oilfield interference. It is of interest to point out that a non-uniform radial aquifer in which both the permeability and the porosity are inversely proportional to the radial distance can be treated in a manner similar to a linear aquifer of uniform properties. The situation where only the permeability varies as the inverse of the radial distance is also amenable to analytical treatment. Both aquifers behave quite differently from a radial aquifer with uniform properties so far as the water influx and the interference pressure drop are concerned. METHOD OF SOLUTION The expression for the interference pressure drop in Oil Field B due to a constant rate of water influx in Oil Field A is developed in the Appendix. This is accomplished by the simultaneous solution of two partial differential equations describing the pressure in Regions I and 11. It is my purpose in the following paper to describe the south-central part of Siberia, with special reference to its geology and the mineral deposits. This region is known politically as the Achinsk and Marinsk districts of the Tomsk Government. It is situated among the Altai mountains, in. ]at. 50° to 55O n and long. 87O to 93O E., not far from the northern frontier of Mongolia, and is divided as follows: Mining Districts.—(1) The Tomsk mining district, including the political districts of Altai (belonging to the private crown lands of the Russian Emperor) and Marinsk; (2) the AchinskMinusinsk mining district, including the political districts of Achinsk and Minusinsk; and (3) the North Yenisei mining district, situated in the northern part of the Yenisei political district of the Yenisei Government. Fig. 1 is a map of the Tomsk mining provinces, showing the useful mineral-deposits, excepting those of gold, and giving the routes of the railroads and post-roads connecting the various districts. Political Divisions.—The Tomsk Government is sub-divided into seven " oojesdy " or districts, as follows: Barnaul; Biisk; Kuznetsk; Kainsk; Kolyvan; Marinsk; Narim; and the Altai district (private land, as above). The Yenisei Government is sub-divided into five "oojesdy" or districts, as follows : Erasnojarsk ; Kansk; Yenisei; Achinsk; Minusinsk. Concerning the geology of the region, in addition to the record of my own observations, references will be made to the works of earlier writers. These have been consulted for the purpose of comparison, as regards the districts which I have actually traversed, and for the purpose of completing my account of such portions as I have not been able to visit.

The removal of sulfur from steel has been studied by many investigators, but the quantitative relationships between the factors involved have not been determined. This is undoubtedly due to the number of variables encountered in practice, an attempt to study any one reaction or relation being affected by other reactions the relative importance of which cannot be estimated. The factors that affect the extent of removal of sulfur in the basic open-hearth process are generally considered to be: 1. Basicity of the slag: (a) Iron oxides in the slag; (b) carbon in the metal or carbide in the slag; (c) temperature. These factors affect the reactions: FeS + CaO = CaS + FeO FeS + CaO + C = CaS + CO + Fe. 2. Amount of sulfur in the gas. 3. Amount of manganese in the metal. The factors which affect the rate of removal of sulfur include, in addition to these: 4. Fluidity of the slag: (a) Normal changes in fluidity with temperature; (b) changes in fluidity because of the addition of special reagents such as fluorspar. 5. Agitation of the bath. Within the past two years, two papers have been presented dealing with the influence of sulfur in the gas on slag and metal. Nead' has shown that if a gas high in sulfur be used for heating, the metal and slag will absorb sulfur. Whitely2 concluded from his experiments that if a

Our colleagues cannot in the future earn reputations and medals for achievements in milling and smelting ore and for successful management of mining companies, if some one doesn't keep finding and mining the ore to mill and smelt and to provide the basis for the good management. Good ore seems sometimes to be quite helpful to good management, and good ore is not as easy to find as it used to be. And there are still more reasons, why—when this honor had been decided upon and named for Mr. Daniel C. Jackling—it should be initially conferred on Reno H. Sales. . The terms of reference of the award are that it should be conferred upon an individual working in the fields of mining, geology, geophysics, who has made an outstanding contribution to the progress of technology in one or more of those fields. And in this initial year (the earlier years are the easiest) just that was done. I think I could get away with it amongst the old-timers of my generation if I say that this time they made the award to the individual, who made the outstanding contribution. But, as Al Smith used to say, "Let's look at the record." Really, the record is mixed up a little with extra-lateral litigation—the old-time "apex cases" under Section 2322 of the Revised Statutes. Reno Sales doesn't like such litigation, but there is little question that the urgency, generated by conflicting claims of intra-limital and extra-lateral rights, and consequent necessity for committing to records and maps the complications of Butte structure, did advance—and by several years—the first continuous, accurate, systematic, and scientific portrayal of the geological and mineralogical details of what is, after all, the most important and the most complicated copper district—at least in North America. Prior to Sales' time, some of the most eminent of geologists often waived details. One geologist took the judge to the window to show him the Rarus fault going through a notch in the Continental Divide. The entertaining testimony in the Bluebird litigation was as perfect in literary style as it was innocent of the criteria by which faulting and lack of continuity of vein structure are now recognized. At any rate, this need for an accurate record of structure was in the background—to whatever extent it was, or was not, the etiological agent—for formation of the Geological Department of the Amalgamated Copper Co. in and about the year 1900. Charles W. Goodale was at that time the head of the Boston & Montana, and John D. Ryan succeeded William Scallon as the president of Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in 1905. Horace V. Winchell, for years a specialist in extra-lateral litigation, was perhaps the man who at that date had the vision, the persuasive weight with the management, and the willingness to defend the idea of large current expenditures (as then viewed) for a complete and sys-
