The past 15 years have seen rapid advances in the metallurgy of materials for drill machinery and bits, but rock drilling itself continues to be largely an art. Jet piercing, roller bit rotary drilling, and rotary percussion are all promising new techniques, but the percussion rock drill, still used for 90 pct of the blastholes in U. S. hard-rock mining, has undergone no major modification since pneumatic machines were first used successfully in the 1860's. This singular lack of progress stems directly from ignorance of the nature of impact failure of rock and the fundamentals of rock penetration in general. For nearly three-quarters of a century, mining engineers did not know what went on at the bottom of a drillhole. More and more, in recent years, investigators in the field have come to realize that to understand percussion drilling they must study the basic action of percussion bits penetrating rock—not the per- formances of commercial rock drills, with their many attendant variables that cannot be isolated or controlled. Using a vertical drop tester, the writer investigated the sequence of rock failure under the impact. of a simple, chisel-shaped bit when changes were made, singly, in significant variables. Results of this and other research are reported here. BASIC CONCEPTS The formation of a crater in rock under the impact blow of a bit can be observed experimentally. Directly beneath the edge of the bit the rock is crushed into fine powder; toward the sides of the crater it chips out into relatively large fragments. An explanation of these phenomena has been offered by Drilling Research Inc. on the basis of work sponsored by this organization at Battelle Memorial Institute (Ref. 1,1954, Summary, pp. 9-18). The last few years have shown an increasing interest in the subject of beneficiating iron-ores in all iron-producing countries. In the United States, this movement has been slower than in certain parts of Europe, for the obvious reason that the abundance and relative cheapness of the Lake Superior irou-ores has hindered the development of enterprises for the preparation of low-grade ores. Gradually, however, conditions have changed. The world's consumption of iron is increasing enormously. Being in 1900 about 40,000,000 tons, in 1910 it was already 60,000,000; and there is no reason to doubt that for the near future the increase in iron-cousumption mill continue at the same rapid rate, especially with the development of China, certain parts of Africa, and other regions which have hardly been touched as yet by modern industrialism. It is, therefore, not surprising that apprehension is felt that the known available iron-ore resources of the world are gradually being depleted. Signs of this feeling are the recent iuvestigation, under the direction of the U. S. Geological Survey, of the iron-ore resources of the United States, and the estimate presented to the last International Geological Congress, at Stockholm, Sweden, of the iron-ore resources of the world. These investigations have emphasized the fact that the known high-grade ore-deposits are limited in extent, and will, at a not distant future, be exhausted, compelling the iron industry to depend for raw material on the enormous deposits of low-gratle ores which are distributed over almost all the world. The discovery of new deposits of high-grade ore, in countries not yet thoroughly explored, will not materially change this prospect. Of course, the part which such new deposits will play in the future cannot be forecast. The difficulty and cost of transportation will probably exclude many of them from use at the present centers of the iron industry.

The development, within recent years, of core drills capable of drilling holes up to 72 in., or even more, in diameter, has made possible an entirely new and valuable method of geologic exploration. Although little used until recently as an exploratory tool except in the United States, by the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Corps of Engineers of the U. S. Army, for the exploration of damsites, the large-diameter core drill may be used to good advantage in other types of geologic exploration. Its principal utility is that of supplementing, rather than replacing, other means of exploration. Although core is frequently recovered intact, the greatest advantage of large-diameter drilling is that the holes produced are large enough to be entered by the geologist and engineer, and thus afford an excellent means of examining undisturbed rock. The walls of the holes are smoothly cut, and in some rocks nearly or quite polished, so that the most minute details of structure and stratigraphy are clearly disclosed. Such features as faults, joints, bedding planes, weathered "seams," and beds or layers of soft materials, which are not always amenable to disclosure by cores recovered from small-diameter holes, are conspicuously displayed in the walls of large holes. Frequent reference to the drilling of large-diameter holes is made in engineering literature, but comparatively little emphasis has been placed on their value in geologic investigation. It is, therefore, intended that the present paper acquaint the geologist, as well as the engineer, with the large-diameter core drill and the technique involved in its use, and also with its advantages, disadvantages and limitations as an implement of geologic exploration. The Equipment The equipment generally employed in the drilling of large-diameter holes consists of a trunnion-type drill head mounted on a sliding base, which allows it to slide clear of the hole and thus permit the introduction

At the Mining Experiment Station of the U. S. Geological Survey, in Pittsburg, an investigation of the process of combustion is being carried on in a specially-designed furnace having an unusually long combustion-chamber. This work is conducted by a con~mittee consisti~lg of 11. Kreisinger, mechanical engineer; Dr. J. C. W. Frazer, chemist; and Dr..J. K. Clement, physicist. The problem, essentially one of physical chemistry, is estremely interesting to all who are concerned in the burning of coal or the construction of furnaces. The main object of these experiments is to ascertain the relation between the amount of' the volatile combustible driven from the coal and the combustion-spaces necessary to burn it completely. Our best steam-coals vary from 15 to 45 per cent. in volatile matter and from 40 to 75 per cent. of fixed combtistible. The greater part of the latter is burned on the grate: but the volatile combustible leaves the freshly-charsed coal and must be burned in the combustion-space. If this space is not large enough, the volatile combustible mill leave the furnace only partly burnecl, and the result will be a considerable heat-loss and a smoky stack. Strictly speaking, the factor which determines the completeness of combustion of the volatile matter, after it has been mixed with a certain amount of air, is the length of time the mixture is allowed to remain in the combustion-space; but this length of time depends on the extent of the space itself. Let us suppose, for instance, that, when a given coal is burned at a certain standard rate, the volume of the volatile combustible driven oft' per second is 10 cu. ft. Adding, say, 10 cu. ft. of air, the volume of the resulting burning mixture is increased to 20 cu. ft. If the combustion-space is 30 cu. ft., the burning mixture will stay in it,

Among the various studies made by the Coal Fact Finding Commission, appointed by President Warren G. Harding in 1922 to investigate all phases of the coal-mining industry in the United States and to report to Congress, was one concerning the amount and nature of losses in mining bituminous coal in the eastern part of the United States. This study was carried on under the direction of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The writer was appointed field engineer to investigate the problem in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Some 400 mines were studied in these three states and conclusions were drawn from many sources of data. The summary report written by George S. Rice and J. W. Paul states that "the field reports indicate that the recovery in Ohio will remain about as at present, except in the Belmont district; whereas in Pennsylvania it will gradually improve, and in West Virginia it will improve rapidly." Since 1922, the writer has been interested in gathering material to substantiate or contradict these prophecies. Nature of Coal Losses There are six general causes of losses of coal in mining: (1) coal left on the roof and bottom; (2) coal lost in room, entry and panel pillars; (3) coal lost in oil-well or gas-well pillars; (4) coal lost under buildings, railroads and boundaries; (5) coal lost in handling and prepayation, underground and surface; (6) coal lost by rolls, thin or dirty areas and under streams. Local economic aspects that dominate the type of mining conditions determine to some extent whether certain losses are avoidable or unavoidable. In general, however, unavoidable losses include coal lost in the protection of buildings, streams, railroads, restricted properties and around oil and gas wells. Barrier pillars and other safety pillars are unavoidable losses as long as their size does not exceed the minimum for adequate safety. Natural physical conditions beyond human control, such as rock faults, clay veins, partings and binders, bad top and bottom, rolls and horsebacks, cause unavoidable losses. Unavoidable losses

No metallurgical process developed in the 20th century compares with froth flotation in its effect on the mineral industry. Processes like gravity - concentration, amalgamation, and pyrometallurgical reduction are of ancient origin; others like cyanidation and electrolytic reduction were well established by 1900. Such metallurgical processes as heavy-media separation, ion-exchange, and solvent extraction belong to this century, but their influence is small compared with froth flotation. Data collected by the U. S. Bureau of Mines* in a canvass of 202 froth flotation plants reveal that, in 1960, 198- million tons of material was treated to recover 20-million tons of concentrates which contained approximately $1 billion in recoverable products. SIGNIFICANCE OF FLOTATION Froth flotation as described in this chapter refers to a wet process for separating properly ground mineral particles into two or more products. It involves the separation of mineral particles from each other in a liquid pulp by means of air bubbles. Finely crushed ore is agitated in water with the addition of air or other gases. Various chemicals and oils are added to cause the selected mineral particles to attach themselves to the air or gas bubbles. These bubbles, carrying the mineral particles, rise to the surface where they are removed in a froth, while the other particles remain suspended in the pulp. The earliest flotation divided the raw material into two products: a bulk concentrate that was removed as a froth and a tailing that remained in the flotation machine. The froth usually contained the valuable constituents. The successful application of such a process depended on the recovery of a single concentrate from which one or more valuable constituents could be recovered by a chemical or smelting process. With the advance of the art, however, the principle of selective flotation, by which two or more relatively pure products could be recovered from complex raw materials, was evolved. A centralized online data acquisition system has been developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center for rapidly digitizing, storing, and processing experimental signals originating up to 1100 feet away from a central computer. This system, which services seven laboratories, is currently based on a CDC System 17 1/- computer with 56K of semiconductor memory, four disk drives (one shared online with a CDC 1700), two magnetic tape drives, high-speed A/D hardware, and other input/output peripherals. The laboratories are linked to the central computer by 15-pair cables and signal conditioners and to the computer's communications controller by modems and current loops. The A/D throughput rate is approximately 30,000 samples per second (9 bit plus sign resolution) and permits scanning about 30 instruments once every millisecond for up to 100 seconds, being limited only by disk capacity. The laboratories serviced by this facility conduct explosions research and include such facilities as an Experimental Coal Mine Explosion Facility (45 channels), a Constant Volume Combustion Laboratory (4 channels), and a Simulated Coal Mine Laboratory (15 channels). Personnel support includes one systems analyst, two applications analysts, one operator, and a hardware technician. The system has performed adequately for burst-type data acquisition, but due to a lack of long-term reliability (24 hours) of the real-time multiprogramming operating system and unpredictable power failures, slow phenomena signals are generally digitized and stored offline. This latter data is input to the computer through peripherals such as a high-speed paper tape reader, or high-speed asynchronous communications ports. Processing of data is done either in real-time (as soon as data is collected) or in batch mode. Smaller batch jobs are run on this computer, and all others are transmitted by means of the system's high-speed UT 200 terminal simulator to a CDC-6000 series computer.

Kansas retained, for the eighth consecutive year, the fourth position in the list of oil-producing states. The total crude-oil production during 1934, as reported by purchasers to the State Corporation Commission, was 45,538,564 bbl. on 97 per cent tank table calculations of the purchasers, or 46,946,973 bbl. as carried on 100 per cent measurement in U.S. Government reports. The corresponding figures for 1933 are 40,008,940 and 41,236,021, respectively. The increase of production over 1933 was due to the rising demand for oil from Kansas, caused principally by three factors: the continued regulation of the producing branch of the industry by Federal and State authorities, which had the effect of reducing illegal production that has been so destructively competitive with Kansas crude and refined products; the normal decline of production in other areas; and, last and best, general increased demand of the public for petroleum products. The price level remained unchanged for the first time in oil history for so long a period. Kansas 36" gravity crude remained at $1 per barrel from September, 1933, and throughout 1934. Price stability and the confidence in the regulation of production to meet the consumer demand, which is increasing, brought greatly renewed interest in Kansas fields. Drilling activity has been largely in the western part of the state where expiration of leases, on large blocks of acreage, assembled before the depression, is forcing either action or loss of the lease investment carried for a long period. The drilling of these many blocks of acreage, previously assembled on geologic information, has caused the opening of more fields than during any previous year of Kansas oil history and is proceeding faster than anticipated a year ago. Interest grows within a successful enterprise, and the momentum caused by the successes of 1934 will continue in 1935 unless unusual conditions arise and end the apparently good opportunity for financial return. Geological exploration methods used in new field discoveries are shown in the tabulation of new discoveries (Table 3).

AN increased demand for brown iron ore in the Birmingham district during the past 18 months has caused renewed activity both in prospecting and mining these ores. In recent years the production in Alabama has ranged from 41,559 tons in 1932 to 639,351 tons in 1928. During the last 9 years about 83 per cent of the total brown ore produced in the United States has come from Alabama (Tables 1 and 2). PROSPECTING Two methods of prospecting are used in this district: (1) test pits, (2) churn-drilling. Usually there is certain quite definite information on an area to be prospected; some of the indications are float ore suck as small gravel or small and large boulders known as "dornicks” scattered over the surface, and ore exposed by erosion in gulleys and ravines, which have cut or eroded through the overburden. Often these natural erosions furnish an indication of the thickness of the ore and to some extent of the area of the ore body. Deposits of brown ore are very irregular both in thickness and extent. Deposits are often lens-shaped or long narrow leads, some of which may be parallel and separated from one another by sand, clay or gravel. The bottom-the footwall-is also very irregular. This footwall is usually lime clay-disintegrated limestone, locally called "white horse," which usually is found at a depth of 6 in. to 20 ft. overlying the limestone. At some places sand and gravel is found under the ore instead of clay. No ore is found under the lime clay, although often the ore has sunk or slumped and is found in the upper portion of this clay, as at some of the Sloss workings at Russellville. The origin of these ores has been discussed by Major E. C. Eckel and Dr. E. F. Burchard in U. S. Geological Survey Bulletin 400, and recently the latter has done further work on ores in the Russellville district, of which reports undoubtedly will be published.

The exact date of man's first use of coal is lost in antiquity. The discovery that certain black rock would burn was undoubtedly accidental and probably occurred independently and many times in the world over thousands of years. It is quite likely that these independent discoveries were made when primitive man chanced to build camp fires on exposed ledges of a black stone, then was amazed when it caught fire. The Chinese recorded the use of coal 1100 years before the Christian Era. And, from the Bible we learn that King Solomon was familiar with coal in what is now Syria. In Wales, there is evidence that the Bronze Age people used coal for funeral pyres, and it is known that the Romans used this fuel. There are other ancient references. So the knowledge that coal would burn, and even some uses of that knowledge, goes back for thousands of years. However, practical and consistent use of coal seems to date to England in the Middle Ages. COAL IN AMERICA In the Americas, there is evidence here and there of a slight use by the Indians. However, the first recorded discovery of coal, in what is now the U.S., was by French explorers, who reported a "cole mine" on the Illinois River in 1679. Following this, other discoveries were made by French and British explorers, but the first recorded actual usage was in Virginia in 1702, where a French settler was granted permission to use coal for his forge. Earliest recorded commercial mining was in 1750, from the James River coalfield near Richmond, Va., a deposit now abandoned. Besides local consumption from this field, shipments were made to Philadelphia, New Pork, and Boston. The centrifuge has come into general use in the oil fields and in the establishments where lubricating and fuel oils are used. Probably centrifugal machinery will be found more useful in the refinery when the operators are more familiar with'the principles of modern centrifuga-tion and when centrifugal engineers better understand the refinery emulsion problems. It is not generally realized that centrifugal force and gravity have two distinct functions: First, subsidence wherein the suspended globules are brought into contact; second, coalescence (when this is possible) by rupturing the films around the globules. In the case of a water-in-oil emulsion, an exercise of the former function alone would yield: (1) oil, free, or as free as desired, from water; and (2) a concentrated water-in-oil emulsion—concentrated in the sense that it contains a relatively large percentage of the internal phase. An exercise of both functions will yield: (1) water-free oil and (2) oil-free water. Centrifugal force is much better than gravity for subsidence because, in the case of industrial emulsions where the suspended globules are visible under a microscope, subsidence is directly proportional to the force applied. Centrifugal force is only slightly better than gravity for coalescence. A minute trace of a proper reagent will immediately do more to nullify the interfacial surface tension opposing coalescence than an indefinite application of the highest attainable centrifugal force. No mathematical analysis has been made to explain the failure of high centrifugal force to induce a decidedly more rapid and more complete coalescence than is obtained by gravity. The adjustment of the centrifuge rotor depends more on the extent of coalescence that is desired or is possible than on any other factor. One reason for this dependence is to be found in the curious relation between the specific gravity and the hydrostatic pressure of emulsions. The new geophone described herein was developed by Charles H. Hull, instrumentmaker of the Colorado School of Mines, and the writer. The first geophone was invented during the war for the purpose of detecting enemy sapping or underground mining operations and for locating enemy artillery. It is based on the principle of the seismograph—a heavy lead mass suspended by one or two diaphragms, which are clamped to an air-tight case. When the ground vibrates during the transmission of sound waves, the case moves with it while the so-called steady mass remains practically motionless. Attached to the top of the casing is a hose leading to an earpiece shaped like a stethoscope. When the mass and the diaphragm move up and down in the case, the air is compressed and rarified in the inside; thus the vibration is communicated as sound wave to the human ear. The geophone combines a surprising simplicity of construction with an extreme sensitivity. Other listening instruments were developed during the war, adaptations of the telephone and the microphone—that is, instruments operating through the medium of electricity—of which the so-called seismicrophone, an adaptation of the carbon-granule microphone receiver, probably has found the greatest application, but such instruments apparently have not proved as useful as the simple geophone despite obvious advantages arising from the use of electricity. The carbon receivers were more subject to extraneous noises and to what is called "frying," and they did not offer the advantage possessed by the geophone; namely, the simultaneous use of two receivers, which makes it possible to determine the location of the source of sound. During the war, the U. S. Bureau of Mines made a study of the geophone and of the propagation of sound waves through rock. These studies have been continued, as the earlier results proved the possibility of using the geophone in various non-military ways, principally in mining, and the results of these studies have been published.'

1. Introduction.—The methods of production of sound steel ingots have been described in several papers read recently before this Institute. It was thought by Director Stratton, of the U. S. Bureau of Standards, and ourselves to be of sufficient interest and importance, as a further contribution to this subject, to compare the properties of rails rolled in one mill according to American practice, from several types of ingot of substantially the same chemical composition but cast by several processes; and to compare in considerable detail the properties of an ingot manufactured by the Hadfield special-feeding process and one of the usual type for rolling into rails. We are greatly indebted to F. W. Wood, President of the Maryland Steel CO., who made this investigation possible by kindly placing his rail mill at our disposal; and he and his associates at Sparrows Point did everything possible to make the experiment a success, including the execution of several of the tests and analyses. 2. Classification and Manufacture of Ingots.—Of the ingots used in this investigation, eight were made in Sheffield and furnished by Sir Robert Hadfield, and one was made and furnished by an American steel company,l as a comparison ingot, and was supposed to represent the usual type of ingot from which rails are made. The characteristics of the ingots are given in Table I. Ingots 1, 2, 3, and 4 were cast large end up and fed by the Hadfield method in the usual manner with charcoal and blast continued until the molten steel has set on the top of the head, say varying from 20 to 40 min. To ingots 1, 2, and 4 was added 0.1 per cent. aluminum, and to the nickel-chrome ingot, No. 3, 0.125 per cent. This study is an investigation on using hydrogen peroxide for tank-leaching of uranium with sulfuric acid. The optimum sulfuric acid concentration was found to be 0.03 mole 11 -'for a 25% pulp density suspension. The order of reaction with respect to sulfuric acid concentration was found to be ns0.75. The best results vith hydrogen peroxide were obtained at a 4.64 molar ratio of 6202 to U in the ore. The order of reaction was found to be zero with respect to hydrogen peroxide concentration. The theoretical maximum rate effect of Hz02 on uranium extraction was derived as Vm = 8.15 x mole &-'min-'. The highest rate experimentally attained was 8.09 x mole kL'min-'. It was found that the uranium extrac- tion was not affected by the pulp density up to the 50% used in this study. However, the final yieldswere significantly higher (over 90%) for leaches carried out in the presence of Hz02 than (less than 90%) for leaches carried out in the absence of H202. The reaction was found to follow a first order course with respect to substrate concentration (pulp density) regardless of the presence of H202. The effect of temperature was more explicit at moderate tempetatures (30 to 55 C) than at lower (10 C) or at higher (70 C) temperatures. At this latter temperature an almost complete extraction was realized even without H202. The apparent activation energies were found to be AEa = 2.68 kJ mole-' in the absence of H202, 0.5 kJ mole-'with Hz02 at 40 C to 70 C. and 4.72 kJ mole-' with Hz02 at 10 C to 40 C. All these activation energy values suggested that the uranium extraction process is diffusion controlled regardless of the presence of H202. Further, the change in activation energy in the presence of Hz02 indicates the possibility of change in the reaction mechanisms at lower and higher temperatures.

This paper summarizes the data on the oil-shale deposits of western Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. It is based on published reports by the U. S. Geological Survey, on the results of core drilling and sampling by the Bureau of Mines, on the drill cuttings from the Genera1 Petroleum well, on a recent unpublished report by the Geological Survey on the geology of Naval Oil-Shale Reserves No. I and No' 21 and from information supplied by geologists of private companies who have investigated the Green River formation. The paper also contains a revised estimate of the grade and tonnage of minable thicknesses of oil shale of western Colorado. Introduction The oil shales of the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming comprise an important natural resource for the production of synthetic liquid fuels. The oil shale in western Colorado generally is more amenable to exploitation, apparently richer, and probably more persistent than in Utah or Wyoming. Work is now being done by the Bureau of Mines near Rifle, Cola. to ascertain the best procedures for mining the oil shale, producing shale oil from the oil shale, and converting the oil into more salable products. As a part of this program, holes were drilled and cores were taken of the oil shale on Naval Oil-Shale Reserve No. I. In addi- tion, drill cuttings were obtained from a well drilled through the Green River formation by the General Petroleum Co. about 18 miles northerly of the Naval Oil-Shale Reserve. Geology During middle Eocene time a broad, shallow body of water, now called Uinta Lake, covered northwestern Colorado and east-central Utah; a similar lake, known as Gosiute Lake, was in southwestern Wyoming Each of these contemporary lakes was bounded by high hills; the drainage was to the south. A RESUME. of some important points regarding the life of drill steel, which have so far been learned from investigations carried out in the SKF Hofors' mines, Sweden, by L. Nordenfelt, is given below. By examining all fatigue breakages which occurred in the test it has bees conclusively proved that when a rock drill of the self-rotating type is used all break-ages of this kind start from the surface of the hole in the steel. It has further been proved that the rough hole surfaces (i.e., the marks left by the indentations of the sand core), are the starting points for the fatigue cracks and that the corrosive action of the water has .a very detrimental influence on the life of the steel. It is now a well known fact that this corrosive action concentrates at the bottom of the indentations left by the sand. The corrosive action of water has been well described by U. R. Evans in his paper, "Some Recent Work on the Corrosion of Metals," delivered on March 31, 1926, before the Liverpool Engineering Society, which is quoted in part below: "It is well known that, under ordinary conditions, most metals do not corrode in water unless dissolved oxygen is present. The strange feature of corrosion in submerged metals, however, is that the attack does not proceed mainly over those portions of the surface which could be reached readily by oxygen; deterioration takes place at certain points which are relatively, inaccessible to oxygen. When. a metal becomes pitted by corrosion, further attack usually deepens the pits, and in many cases it could be proved that there was no free oxygen at the bottom of the pits. None of the older theories of corrosion explain the fact that, although oxygen is necessary for rapid corrosion to take place, the attack actually occurs at the very points which could not be reached directly by oxygen.

PEoperly designed tubing strings make it possible to continue the flowing life of wells beyond the stage where ordinarily they would be put to pumping. Wells no longer able to flow through 2-in. tubing can be made to produce through smaller tubing if conditions within the well are carefully studied and correctly designed strings are installed. In this way, pumping expense may be postponed and in some pools it is within reason that the entire recovery may be obtained by natural flow if maintenance of pressure is practiced. Infrequent tubing changes would be necessary but their cost would be much less than that of installing and maintaining pumping equipment. If small wells are to be made to flow naturally, careful consideration must be given the actual lifting mechanics within the string, so that fairly accurate knowledge of reservoir conditions, especially pressure, is essential. Wells producing between 5 and 25 bbl. daily are classified here as "small wells." Exponential Flow A maximum of the energy contained in the expanding gas must be employed to do useful work if natural flow is to be continued. It is evident that adiabatic expansion would defeat this purpose, therefore the velocity of the gas must be held down to a minimum in order that isothermal expansion may be approached. Of course, true isothermal expansion would not be obtainable in an oil well, hence the use of the term "exponential." 1 Obviously the closer the approach to isothermal expansion, the more efficient the lift. Experiments by the U. 8. Bureau of Mines² have shown that for isothermal expansion to take place in a gas well where water is being produced, a definite relationship exists between the depth of the well and the minimum operating pressure. The latter must be such that the tubing fill-up, if static conditions prevailed, would be equivalent to 14 per cent of the distance between the top of the fluid inside the tubing and the tubing head. Two Opposed Interpretations of the Tonopah Structure.-The important geological publications concerning the Tonopah mining-district are those of Spurr 1 and of Burgess.2 In these publications are presented fundamental differences of interpretation, which are the more interesting because both authorities have had ample opportunity for observation, and because both are geologists of proved ability. I was vastly puzzled to know which had the better of it, and in order that I might reach a conclusion in my own mind, I recently spent some time in the district going over the physical evidence. Surprising as it may seem, this evidence looks agreeably conclusive. A review of it will, I believe, be of interest to those who are familiar with the previous publications. The general geological features of Tonopah are shown in Fig. 1, and the differences of interpretation referred to are outlined in the accompanying notes. Briefly, Burgess regards the various rocks as flows, lying in the order of their deposition. Spurr regards them in part as flows, and in part as flat-lying intrusives. The disagreement, then, concerns the rocks regarded on the one hand as intrusives, and, on the other hand, as flows. These rocks are chiefly the so-called calcitic andesite, the upper rhyolite, and the lower rhyolite. This brief resume of the events transpiring in Mexico, culled from the daily New York newspapers since the last Bulletin went to press, does not show any degree of improvement in the situation. U. S. WITHDRAWS ARMY FROM MEXICO The American invasion of Mexico lasted less than 24 hours. The troops which crossed the Rio Grande June 15 to put a stop to the firing that was causing death and injury in El Paso were back in their billets on the American side of the border the next night. They had broken up the battle between Villa rebels and the Carranza garrison and driven the rebel forces headlong out of Juarez and into the hills. The Carranza Consul, Garcia, and Gen. Francisco Gonzales are reported by American officials to be pessimistic, if not indignant, at the swift reprisals made by the Americans against the stray shots which were falling in El Paso during the Villa attack on Juarez. In announcing his action in ordering Americans into Mexico Brigadier General Erwin in a formal statement said he had done-so to prevent the indiscriminate firing into El Paso by rebel soldiers, endangering the lives of Americans. "But on no account were they to undertake an invasion into Mexico," continued the statement. Americans with interests in the vicinity of Chihuahua are alarmed lest Villa, smarting under the defeat administered his troops by the American forces, should make a campaign of destruction. General Candido Aguilar, President Carranza's confidential ambassador to the United States, issued to the press, on June 17, a formal statement that "the government and people of Mexico consider as a violation of Mexican sovereignty the crossing of United States soldiers into Mexican territory" and expressing the hope ?that the situation created by the latest occurrences in Juarez will be satisfactorily adjusted between the two countries." Discussion of Mexican affairs was evoked in both houses of Congress by the crossing of the Rio Grande by American troops.
