SOME of the outstanding features of petroleum production in Illinois during 1923 were: (1) Sustained production from the older wells, due to cleaning and deepening; (2) good results from new drilling in a few localities; (3) large percentage of dry holes, many of which were ill advised tests, with a resulting high cost of the new production; (4) decrease in the number of productive wells in the state; (5) low average price of crude petroleum, a serious factor over the entire country. FIG. 1.-ANNUAL TOTALS OF ILLINOIS PRODUCTION. The total production of Illinois for 1923 was 8,710,000 bbl.,1 a decrease of 7.2 per cent. from that of 1922. Of this amount, it is estimated that about 8,500,000 bbl. were produced by old wells, many of which had been cleaned and deepened somewhat, and approximately 210,000 bbl. were obtained from the new wells drilled during the year. About 95 per cent. of the oil comes from the southeastern field in Clark, Crawford, and Lawrence Counties, where production is almost entirely from Pennsylvanian and Mississippian rocks. Extensions of the productive area were made in Clark, Wabash, Marion, and Jackson Counties. Some important gas development has been accomplished near Jacksonville, in Morgan County, and at Gillespie, in Macoupin County.

The rapid and comparatively recent development of flotation has opened so fascinating a field for study and research that the older processes of gravity concentration no longer receive the attention they deserve. The early work of Munroe1 and Richards,2 and the more recent contributions by Clevenger and Coe,3 Laist and Wiggin,4 Ammon,5 Bardwell,6 Crowfoot,7 and Hayden8 to mention only some which have appeared in our own Transactions-and by Schulz,9 have furnished so much data that to offer something new seems a difficult task. It is still possible, however, to present known facts from a different point of view, and, with this in mind, the writer has undertaken to express basic principles of gravity concentration in terms of simple mathematics and mechanics; the conclusions thus reached will be found to correspond, in general, with those obtained by experimental methods. Rittinger, in his classic Aufbereitungskunde (1867), reached analogous conclusions by way of intricate higher mathematics, for which reason his interesting investigations have remained a sealed book to most of us. The writer hopes that a more elementary treatment of the subject, based in part on Rittinger's methods, may, arouse new interest in the study of basic principles.

Geological storage of spent-fuel assemblies from an operating nuclear reactor has been underway since the Spring of 1980 at the U.S. Department of Energy's Nevada Test Site. The primary objective of this generic test is to evaluate granite as a medium for deep geological storage of high level reactor waste and to provide data on thermal and thermomechanical behavior of granite from imposed heat loads.(l) The underground installation in the Climax stock granite was sited at about 420 m below the surface and 145 m above the existing water table. As shown in Figure 1, three parallel drifts were excavated spaced on approximately 10 m centers. Seventeen storage holes were drilled at the central drift on 3 m centers in which eleven spent fuel canisters and six thermally identical electrical simulators were emplaced. Electrical resistance heaters were emplaced in vertical holes in the floor of the side drifts on 6 m centers. The thermal output of these heaters is being periodically adjusted to simulate the thermal response of a large storage array. Rock and ventilation air temperatures are being measured continuously in the drifts and throughout the rock surrounding the excavations. Measurements of drift deformation have been made routinely since the emplacement of the spent fuel. Both vertical and horizontal measurements are being taken at five locations along the heater drifts and at six locations along the central canister drift (Fig. 1). Two types of instrumentaton are being used: convergence wire extensometers which are monitored automatically, and a manually operated tape extensometer with which measurements are taken periodically. The tape extensometer measurements were initiated about 6 weeks following fuel emplacement. The lack of a temperature correcting capability for the convergence wire extensometers make that data unavailable for analysis at this time.

As a raw material, prereduced pellets can be considered symptomatic of the quiet revolution taking place in the quality and grade of blast furnace burdens for the past decade. In 1954, the average analysis of ores from U.S. ranges in the Great Lakes area was 50.86% Fe (natural), 10.22% SiO2, and 10.90% moisture; ten years later, the average was 56.67% Fe (natural), 8.13% SiO2, and 6.17% moisture. The advance in Canada was even more pronounced in a lesser number of years. In 1957 the average product of Canadian ore-producing areas was 51.62% Fe (natural), 8.59% Si02, and 8.02% moisture; in 1964, the average grade was 59.59% Fe (natural), 6.27% SiO2, and 3.94% moisture.2 These dramatic data are testimony to the giant strides made in iron ore improvement, and the next logical step is prereduction. Prereduction can well be considered as a beneficiation step in which oxygen is the gangue. Since the ultimate objective of milling and smelting is iron metal, non-metallic constitutents in general, whether oxygen or silica, are contaminants. The past and continuing attack aimed at lowering the silica content of concentrates is succeeding. One need only thumb through the Grade Name listings of the American Iron Ore AssociationVo note that virtually all commercial pellets contain less than 8% silica, many are lower than 6%, and a few below 45%. With natural technical evolution, it is expected "many" rather than "few" will ultimately be in the last category and further mechanical concentration will have reached the point of diminishing returns. At this level, oxygen would constitute the only major diluent worthy of attack.

THE 142D MEETING of the Institute is rapidly shaping up with splendid prospects of a strong technical program and the lighter side of this annual occasion amply provided for. The date is February 20 to 23. The technical sessions will be held in the Engineering Societies building; the smoker-dinner, the informal dance, and the annual reception and dinner, at the Commodore Hotel, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. The news to date on the technical side is as follows: Mining Methods-Subsidence The Mining Methods Committee has prepared an interesting program which will be divided into two sessions to be held early in the week. At the first there will be papers on mining methods and development, including a description of the "Sinking and Equipment of No. 2 Shaft at Minas de Matahambre," by Dudley D. Homer and R. H. Cromwell. They describe in considerable detail the equipment used and the practice followed in sinking this important shaft, giving detailed costs and performance figures. Hoist¬ing ?arrangements and mining practice at the "Red Ore Mines of the Woodward Iron Co. at Bessemer, Ala.," are described by Tenny C. DeSollar, superintendent of mines, in a second paper. At this session of the Mining Methods Committee, H. M. Roche and R. E. Crockett, of the Committee on Eastern Magnetite Mining and Milling Methods, will present their paper, "Iron Ore Mining at the Scrub Oak Mine." This mine is in the highlands of New Jersey about 40 miles west of New York City. Prof. Robert K. Warner of Yale University will present a paper on "The Selection of a Mining System," which should have an interesting discussion. Pierre R. Hines, of Portland, Ore., will present, with stereopticon slides, his paper on "The Owyhee Tunnels, U. S. Reclamation Project, Owyhee, Oregon," describing one of the recent irrigation undertakings.

THE second award of the Saunders Gold Medal for "distinguished achievement in mining," of which the first was awarded last year to the late D. W. Brunton, has been made to Herbert Hoover. The main events of Mr. Hoover's life are so familiar to all through the numerous journal articles about him and his work, and the interesting biography written by Vernon Kellogg, that no attempt will be made here to touch on anything other than his achievements as a professional mining engineer, for which the award was made. He graduated in mining from Leland Stanford, Jr., University in 1895, but had served as an assistant to Dr. Branner on the Arkansas Geological Survey in 1893 and had also worked two sum-mers as an assistant to H. W. Turner and Waldemar Lind-gren on U. S. Geological Sur-vey work in the Sierra Nevada around Lake Tahoe, and on the American River. Immediately after graduation he got "a job" underground at Grass Valley, and soon rose to be night shift-boss. He then secured employment with the late Louis Janin and made such a good record as office and field assistant that he was soon placed in charge of a small mine at Carlisle, N. M. In 1897, Mr. Janin recom-mended him to Bewick, More-ing & Co., who were looking for an examining engineer for their staff in Australia. Two years were spent in hard work there which was done so creditably that his princi-pals held him and his judg-ment in the highest regard, and he came to the head of their local organization. Among the properties which he acquired for them was the Sons of Gwalia.

While running certain float-and-sink tests, unit coal calorific values were determined for gravity fractions of a series of Illinois coals from several districts in the southern part of the state. When these values were plotted against specific gravity what appear to be characteristic curves of somewhat different shape were obtained for each district represented. This in itself seems noteworthy. The shape of the curves seems to indicate that the lightest fraction of the coal, which inspection shows to be largely vitrain, suffers the least deterioration in storage. It was also observed that on dilution curves established with dry ash and B.t.u. values the fractions of 1.35, 1.40 and 1.50 sp. gr., which constitute the greater weight per cent of a given coal sample, fall more frequently on a straight dilution line than do the lighter or heavier fractions of the same sample. In most instances there is a marked steepening between the 1.35 and the fraction of lighter gravity. In general the curve increases in steepness between the fractions of 1.50 and 1.70 specific gravity. The variations in the unit coal-specific gravity curves as well as those observed in dilution curves which appear to be pertinent to this problem are: (I) variation in coal substance with change in specific gravity, (2) variation in kind and quantity of mineral matter with the specific gravity of the fraction, (3) factors of analytical procedure which tend to introduce error in analysis, particularly in high-ash and high-sulfur fractions. Committee it supports pioneering research on the development of a coal-burning gas turbine and through the Mining Development Committee it promotes research on a new type of continuous mining machine that operates without using explosives. Other organizations have contributed major publications on fundamental and applied coal research in the last two decades, including the Minerals Industries Experiment Station of Pennsylvania State College, the Illinois Geological Survey and University of Illinois, the University of West Virginia, the University of Michigan, the University of Alabama, the University of North Dakota, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Koppers Company, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and, in recent years, the Institute of Gas Technology. Engineering development work, which is included in the overall estimate of $20,000,000, is conducted largely by manufacturers of equipment, and this portion of the estimate is difficult to gage. It represents a large proportion of the estimate and probably is too small rather than too large. For example, the development of mobile coal-loading machines and continuous mining machines, outstanding in recent mining research, undoubtedly involved a high cost. Coal Mining From an economic point of view, the greatest research development in the coal industry obviously has been the growing degree of mechanization in mining. The percentage of underground-mined bituminous-coal output mechanically loaded has risen from 3 pct in 1926 to 67 pct in 1949. Coal operators and equipment , manufacturers have united in designing machinery. Loading machines of large capacity and astonishing flexibility are in common use. Shaking conveyors transport coal from producing faces to transfer points from which it may be carried long distances underground and on the surface; and in many mines rubber-tired shuttle cars carry the coal from the loader to the

Beginning with the second paragraph in the second column of page 148, this paper should read: The Reynolds number in Fig. 6 was calculated from the inlet diam and it is evident from the graph that above NR = 5000 the value of K2 is as it should be, a constant. The data10 shown in Fig. 7 was obtained for fluids flowing in pipes of diam D with sharp edged orifices of diam d. To be consistent with the representation in Fig. 6 the Reynolds number was calculated with the orifice diam d. These two sets of data show similar patterns and the variation in the orifice coefficient C is believed to account for the variability of the cyclone coefficient K2. The values of C given in Table IV are derived from K2 by conversion of units. C more nearly represents an equivalent orifice coefficient for a cyclone. Armstrong1' showed that data reported by Chaston 12 and Elcox13 yielded values for C of 0.24 and 0.27, re- spectively, Dahlstrom's4 data gives a value of 0.22. As a consequence of the variability of the cyclone coefficient some caution must be exercised in substituting for Q in the split size equation.

The rheological properties of aqueous solutions of several commercial flocculants were investigated using a rotating coaxial cylinder viscometer. Similarities between the pH-apparent viscosity relationship and the flocculating properties of the reagents are discussed here. Synthetic neutral polymers and polyelectrolytes are used extensively as flocculants in mining and chemical engineering operations. The action of these reagents has been interpreted as adsorption of the polymer flocculant to the mineral surface, followed by the formation of physical polymer bridges between the particles.4,5 A consequence of the bridging model is that the efficiency of a polymer flocculant depends on the degree with which the polymer is adsorbed to the mineral surface, and the extent to which the polymer molecule forms a bridge between colliding particles. The length of the polymer molecule and its orientation at the mineral surface are important in the bridging mechanism since the further the polymer segments can protrude from the mineral surface the greater the probability may be of these segments contacting another mineral particle. Linke and Booth7 have shown that, for a silica suspension, both the settling rate at a given polymer addition and the maximum settling rate obtainable increase with increasing molecular weight. The materials used for pump construction vary according to the nature of the solution handled. The pump materials in use are the result of extended experiment and are all giving satisfactory results. Research is still in progress, particularly with stainless steel and rubber lining, both of which show considerable promise. Following are the materials used: For tank-room acid, carrying about 100 grams per liter free sulphuric acid, hard lead is used. Stainless steel is under investigation. Duriron is satisfactory, but requires very careful handling to prevent mechanical breakage. For pulps containing low acid (10 grams per liter), abrasive solids, ferric iron, copper, etc. pumps are made of hard lead. Stainless steel is satisfactory. For pulps containing no acid but carrying abrasive materials and copper, bronze is used. Pulps containing acid (10 grams per liter), copper, iron and nonabra-sive solids require lead pumps. Rubber linings are under investigation. Clear neutral solutions containing copper are handled in bronze pumps; neutral solutions free of copper, acid, abrasive material, etc., in iron or bronze. The hard lead used contains 13 per cent antimony. The stainless steel has the following analysis: Cr, 20.0 per cent; Ni, 7.0; C, 0.25; W, 4.0; Cu, 2.0.

Many months ago, the ME staff began thinking about what to put on the February cover of the Centennial Commemorative issue. We have considered photographs of mines, equipment, symbolic artwork and various collages. Our theme is "the next 100 years in mining" and the cover ideally should convey a related message or idea. All of us are convinced that there are many exciting technical changes that will be coming. But even so, we decided that, in our opinion, the engineer is the most vital factor. For this reason we chose to put a man on the cover of this issue. At first it was going to be the face of a man with whom each member could conceivably identify himself. It was one of the Bobs on our staff (we have four) who came up with the thought that since it's the future we are talking about, we should have a young man's or a student's face. Of course we firmed up our idea at the ninth hour, and it was too late to canvass the mining schools. However, by a stroke of luck, we were rapping with a group of University of Arizona students on the terrace of the Pioneer Hotel on December 7, 1970, and met Dave Bolles.

Metallurgical Engineering Volume I, by Reinhardt Schuhmann, Jr. Addison-Wesley Press. $7.50, 390 pp., 1952. -This first volume, engineering principles, of a two volume work, is intended by the author to meet a need for reorganization of instruction in extractive metallurgy. Its three main objectives are to organize the subject matter according to basic principles and unit processes; to integrate the underlying science of physical chemistry with metallurgical engineering; and to put greater emphasis on analysis and quantitative solution of engineering problems. Vol. I deals with unit processes, stoichiometry, thermodynamics, fuels, fluid flow, heat transfer, pyrometallurgical systems and refractories. Vol. II will take up the individual unit processes. Initiation and Growth of Explosion in Liquids and Solids, by F. P. Bowden and A. D. Yoffe. Cambridge University Press. $4.50, 104 pp., 1952.-The book is a study of decomposition by impact and by friction of explosive substances and deals mainly with the work of the authors and their collaborators. Research is still in progress but results thus far indicate that the mechanism of initiation is relatively simple. Findings are thoroughly discussed, and the latter part of the monograph describes the way in which a small nucleus of decomposition can grow into a large scale explosion.

The ore reserves of the United Verde Copper Co. in 1907 were estimated at 4,500,000 tons, averaging about 7 per cent copper. Seventy-five per cent of this tonnage was confined to the so-called fire stopes and the remainder was virgin ore. The fire area was being operated at a maximum capacity of 150 tons per day, and the other workings furnished the remainder of the ore, approximately 600 tons per day. The mine was developed to a depth of 900 ft. and the lower levels were considered lean and unpromising. The smelter had been built directly over the ore-bodies. Its site was congested, the ground was settling and maintenance costs were excessive. The major needs of the United Verde obviously were 1. Additional ore reserves. 2. A new and modern smeltery. 3. A method for the mining of the fire-stope ores commensurate with the tonnage and values involved. It is the method specified in point, 3 with which this paper is chiefly concerned. Such a method required the removal of the old smelter, and additional ore reserves were essential not only for the maintenance of production but for the investment necessary for the building of a new smelter.

(written discussion *).-The writer's conclusions with reference to the possibility of finding commercial deposits of petroleum in Brazil were published in 1908 in the Final Report of the Coal Commission of Brazil.1 Since this volume is not generally accessible, and the author has nothing to acid thereto, the following quotation found on pages 243-7 may prove of interest: The Possibility of Petroleum Deposits in Brazil "The writer has often been asked to express an opinion as to the possibility of finding petroleum in commercial quantity in Brazil.
