EveRy engineer and user of wire rope is desirous of information that will enable him to determine whether the performance of any particular piece of rope is satisfactory, and what conditions can be changed so as to increase the life of a rope. In most cases, it is far from easy to analyze the conditions of service and tell which is the greatest factor in determining the life of wire rope. If we start on a layout for an entirely new rope system, the task of making conditions satisfactory is simplified so far as the engineering details are concerned; but if the plant requiring wire rope is in operation, any change is likely to involve the expenditure of considerable money to replace and change over machinery that must be kept in constant operation, because a large monetary loss will result from a shutdown for even a few days. Often wire rope is kept operating under bad conditions, as the user thinks that it is cheaper and quicker to replace the rope than to make alterations in the hoisting machinery. A typical case is a metal mine operating in what is now almost the center of a large mining city, where it owns a few acres of mineral rights. It was expected that the shaft would go to a depth of 1000 ft. (305 m.), so a moderate-sized rope, about 1 1/4in. (31.7 mm.), was used on a 6-ft. drum with a 7-ft. head-frame sheave and rather short lead from drum to head sheave. This mine has gone deeper each year until it is now 2500 ft. deep and the rope speed has been increased from 1500 ft. per min. to over 3000 ft. The original rope just filled the drum in one layer, now it overwinds three layers. The original ropes were probably 6 X 19 crucible steel and lasted from 12 to 18 mo.; now, the highest grade plow steel is used, yet the average service is only about 6 mo. The cause is not hard to find. If the engineers had known at the outset what would be done with this hoist, the design would have been very different. Conditions at this mine, from a wire-rope standpoint, have gradually become worse and it is difficult to see how rope service on this hoist can be compared with the service of previous years with any fairness to the wire-

For the past 20 years it has been generally accepted that the flotation process is made possible as a result of the action of certain chemical substances on the surface of the mineral particles. In fact, it has been suspected, but never demonstrated, that this action produces on the mineral particles a layer of chemosorbed ions that is of the order of magnitude of a monolayer; that is, of a layer one ion deep. It is the purpose of this paper to present certain initial results on the relationship of mineral surface area and collecting-agent requirements. Up to about eight years ago, all considerations involving the surface area of finely divided solids were limited by the fact that there was not in existence any general method for determining the extent of such surfaces, especially on mixed materials. However, the method invented by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller1 has changed the situation by providing a general procedure (BET method). This procedure has already been applied to mineral dressing problems2-4 and has now received confirmation as to accuracy by an entirely independent method.' This confirmatory or "absolute" method uses a very tedious calorimetric procedure and is not suitable for routine determinations; but still another method6 now is available to relate the results obtained by the BET method to those obtained calorimetrically. This Harkins-Jura method has the advantage that it does not require an assumption concerning the parking area per molecule of adsorbate (nitrogen). In the original work by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller the parking area per nitrogen molecule was calculated to be either 13.8?2 or 16.2?2. according as the nitrogen was assumed to be closely packed as in crystalline nitrogen or loosely packed as in liquid nitrogen. The initial experimental work from this laboratory2 supported the 13.8?2. figure; that work was done on glass spheres of measurable geometric area and it was based on the assumption that the glass spheres were truly smooth; any deviation from this assumption would, of course, have made the calculated parking area higher. Harkins and Jura's results suggest that the parking area is not the same for all substrata; furthermore, the average of the 87 measurements cited indicates a "preferred" parking area for the nitrogen molecule of about 15.2?2., with extreme values at 13.7 and 16.9?2. The average of 21 determinations made in connection with this study7 gave a parking area of 14.3 ± 0.27?². In view of this result and of the Harkins and Jura

PURE silver and silver-lead alloys have been studied as to their suitability for bearings.1-8 A review of the properties of thallium and the silver-thallium constitutional diagram was made by the author to analyze the possibilities of silver-thallium compositions for antifriction materials.† The silver-rich end of the diagram as reported in the literature9-11 was found to be sketchy and it was necessary to carry out considerable experimental work to arrive at definite conclusions. Some of the results of this work are reported in this paper. TEST MATERIALS In the beginning of the work, only fused alloys were investigated. Later, research [TABLE I. In preparing the fused alloys, care was taken to exhaust the toxic fumes caused by the thallium content. The compositions of the series of fused alloys are listed in Table I. The silver-thallium alloys were melted in clay-graphite crucibles and cast into preheated steel molds of 3/4-in. diameter. In the cast condition, they showed a cored structure, as indicated by the micrographs of Figs. I to 3. The etching reagent used was a mixture of 2 grams K2Cr2O7, 8 c.c. H2SO4, and 100 c.c. H2O. The cored structure is unsatisfactory for the type of corrosion resistance required for bearing applications, and homogenizing experiments were carried out at various temperatures, the results of which are shown in Figs. 4 through 8. The alloys with a lower thallium concentration, which were heated for 2 hr. at 525°C. show an almost completely homogenized solid solution type of structure. With higher thallium concentration, the homogenizing temperature was dropped to 475°C. to eliminate the formation of a liquid phase. It is evident that heating for 2 hr. at this temperature did not result in complete elimination of the cored structure. As would be expected, cold-working of the cast structure is an expedient in establishing equilibrium conditions. The fine homogeneous grain structure shown in Fig. 7 corresponds to the cold-worked area under the Rockwell ball penetration when the hardness was taken before heat-treatment. p-n junctions to detect and measure the energy of single quanta of electromagnetic radiation are described. Useful energy range is from 1 kev to several Meu. Achieved energy resolution varies from 30 pct at 6 keu to 0.12 pct at 2 Mev. Parameters affecting the perfornzance of the present detectors and desired of a new material are discussed. DURING the last 6 years semiconductor detectors have been used extensively to detect and to measure the energy of charged particles. These detectors are made from reverse-biased p-n junctions. Electron-hole pairs are created in the depletion region of the junction, Fig. 1. The carriers are separated by the electric field and give rise to a pulse of current in the external circuit. This current pulse is proportional to the number of carriers and hence to the energy deposited in the depletion region by the ionizing event. More recently the discovery of the lithium drift process, first in silicon' and then in germanium,2 has extended the use of semiconductor detectors to the detection and the energy measurement of single quanta of electromagnetic radiation. These detectors now have a useful measurement range extending from the soft X-ray region, about 6 kev, to the hard y ray region of several Mev. Surface-contoured avalanche diodes can be used to extend this range down to 1 kev. There is however a desire for other materials suited to higher operating temperatures, and particularly for those materials with high y ray stopping power. The most important advantage of the semiconductor detector over gaseous and scintillation detectors is the average energy, E, required to form an electron-hole pair. Fig. 2 shows the quantum efficiency for germanium as a function of photon energy.3 At the band-gap energy, 0.7 ev, an electron-hole pair is generated by the absorption of the photon and the quantum efficiency is unity. The quantum efficiency remains constant at unity between 0.7 and 3 ev. It then increases as additional electron-hole pairs are formed by secondary ionization of the initial photoelectron. The rate of increase is about 1 electron-hole pair per 3 ev (actually 2.9 ev for germanium and 3.6 ev for silicon). This figure is constant irrespective of the particle type (electron, proton, a particle, heavy ion) and energy. In an ionizing event an incident particle of energy E will create N = E/e ion pairs. Direct as well as indirect evidence of a-phase ordering was found in a "near-a" type titanium alloy, Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V. The annealed alloy showed an anomalous decrease in second-stage creep rate at 950°F (510°C) and 47,500 psi. Anomalous increases were noted in initial yield stress after 500 hr creep exposure and in tensile strength after 1100 hr creep exposure. Debye-Scherrer X-ray diffraction patterns obtained on fine-grained polycrystalline speci-ment showed much line broadening and development of superlattice lines after 500 hr at 510° C. Examination with the light and electron microscopes failed to reveal phase changes in thermally exposed material, but detailed metallography is presented illustrating the plastic and fracture characteristics of the alloy. Electron-metallographic evidence is presented, however, which shows the nature of the nucleation and growth of ordered regions from the disordered a in annealed material. In the original phase diagram of the binary Ti-Al system constructed by Ogden et al.1 aluminum was shown to be soluble in a titanium over a wide temperature range at concentrations up to about 30 pct. Subsequently, a number of papers2-7 have appeared which indicate the existence of either intermetallic compounds and/or ordered phases in the a field up to 25 pct Al. In the most recent of these, Goldak and Gordon paw7 have determined unequivocally the ordered hexagonal D019 structure for Ti3Al in a 25 pct Al alloy. No superlattice lines were observed above 1112°F (600°C). Previously, the embrittle-ment encountered by Crossley and Carew4 in low- temperature heat treatments of binary Ti-Al alloys low in aluminum had been attributed to the appearance of a new phase in light micrographs. In the present work, direct as well as indirect evidence is presented showing the existence of a-phase ordering in what is essentially the binary Ti-8A1 alloy containing small percentages of the ß stabilizers molybdenum and vanadium, i.e., the "near-a" Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V alloy. Although Bohanek and Kessler8 have shown that this alloy has good stability at temperatures up to 1100°F (593°C), the present work shows instability at 950°F (510°C) where long exposure times were used. Light and electron microscopy proved very useful in revealing the mechanical behavior of ordered a and led to the conviction that ordered "near-a" alloys may have remarkably good properties and useful engineering applications.

THE first steam shovels used in this country were built by the Otis Company, of Boston, about 50 years ago, but as they were of very crude construction and rather unsuccessful only a few were built. For possibly 10 years prior to 1884 successful steam shovels were made and used on certain classes of work, but it was not until that time that they were manufactured in quantities and began to play an important part in all classes of excavation. From that time up to the present day there have been gradual but continuous improvements on the original shovel, not only in the mechanical construction, but also in the design of boilers and engines which are best adapted to this class of service. In proposing a change from steam to electric operation we have to deal with a steam equipment which has not only proved its worth but has probably reached its highest stage of development and efficiency. That the electric shovel is a possibility cannot be denied, as at present from 12 to 18 shovels are in operation in this country. These shovels may be divided into three classes: the friction electric, which is operated by a single constant-speed motor with friction clutches; the three or four motor direct-current equipment, and the three or four motor alternating-current equipment. It is the second and third classes that I wish to deal with, as the first class does not compare favorably with the steam shovel so far as speed is concerned, although it may be operated as cheaply. There is probably no other class of machinery that presents a duty cycle as severe as that of the shovel, which is very short, varying from 7 to 12 sec. on the hoist, from 7 to 12 sec. on the thrust, and from 10 to 18 sec. on the swing, making a complete cycle in from 17 to 30 sec., and the motor to meet these requirements must have a sufficiently low armature inertia to permit of rapid acceleration and quick reversals under small power. It should also be a motor of rugged design, as it must be subjected to severe overloads and shocks and frequent reversals. This is especially true of the hoist motors and, to a lesser degree, of the swing motor; the thrust motor being practically stalled during the digging operation, although it may revolve or overhaul, according to conditions, and is operated at full speed only after the hoisting operation is completed.

Practical metallurgists are unanimous in stating that oxidation of mined sulphide ore adversely affects separation of the constituent minerals under standard conditions in a mill. Frequently, the need for different operating conditions in different plants is attributed either to the extent of oxidation of the mineral surfaces or to soluble oxidation products. The investigations reported in this paper study the effect of oxidation on the primary condition necessary for flotation, namely that of adhesion of an air bubble to the mineral. Oxidation Products from Sulphide Minerals Weinig and Carpenter1 state that the relative rates of oxidation of some sulphides are: FeAsS > FeS2 > CuFeS2 > ZnS > pbS > Cu2S tetrahedrite. They also show that oxidation is rapid at first, that sulphides of older geological formations are more stable than those of recent date and that mixtures oxidize more rapidly than any one mineral alone. The more rapid oxidation of mixtures is borne out by results of Gottschalk and Buehler2 who found that PbS, zns and cus oxidized 8 to 20 times faster when pyrite was present. Only the end products of oxidation, sulphate and the metal ion, were identified in these tests. Gaudin3 states that pyrite is difficult to oxidize in the laboratory. Winchell,4 using pyrite containing 99.98 pct FeS2, allowed water to percolate through a bed of this ground material. At the end of three months only a trace of Fe+++and So4- were found. Even after 10 months the quantity of Fe+++ was only 7.8 mg and SO4- 25.5 mg per liter of percolating solution. Car-michael5 confirmed Winchell's results on the slow oxidation of pyrite. Usually the oxidation of sulphide surfaces has been conducted in neutral or acid solutions, the acidity being caused by the oxidation products. Eliseev and Nagir-nyaka found that treatment of pure pyrite with lime gave only thiosulphate, but considered it possible that thiosulphate was obtained not by oxidation of the pyrite itself, but by oxidation of calcium disul-hide. Mitrofanov7 suggested that thiO~ulphate was formed by the following process: oxidation of sulphide to give free sulphur (this frequently happens with marcasite), followed by oxidation of the sulphur to sulphur dioxide and reaction of the sulphur dioxide with sulphur to give thiosulphate. FROM 1870 to date, the coal production of Utah has been somewhat less than 85,000,000 tons. There have been at least three major disasters with total fatalities about 380; or approximately. 4.4 persons killed by mine explosions per million tons produced, a record that is decidedly bad. Even during the periods when there have been no disasters, such as the years 1914 to 1920, inclusive, the fatalities .in ordinary working ran about 5.4 per million tons produced, against 3.7 per, million tons. for the whole United States for the same years. The five-year period following the war, 1918 to 1922 inclusive, showed 4.7 fatalities per million tons, hence the fatality record in the coal mines of Utah has uniformly been in excess of the average of the coal mines of the entire country. Notwithstanding this poor record, Utah has given to the coal-mining world many excellent safety methods and practices and the Utah. coal mines in general take greater measures toward safe mining than do the coal mines of any other State; if practices and methods allowed and pursued in coal mines of other States were tried in Utah coal mines, there would be a succession of disasters. Utah's principal producing coal mines, operated by about eighteen companies and numbering less than forty, have comparatively thick seams. Very little coal under 5 ft. thick is being worked and practically none under 4 ft.; much, if not most, of the coal comes from seams in excess of 8 ft., some running as high as 30 ft. In thick seams in which coal is left on floor and roof, any dust found or made is entirely combustible. In addition, the thick seams induce the use of large capacity cars, handling which in rooms and other workings on fairly heavy grades (up to 10 or .12 per cent.) tends to cause haulage accidents. The thick seams give high ribs and roof, in which it is difficult to prevent slabs of coal or rock from dropping on workers and also difficult to keep free of gas and of coal dust. The coal is high volatile, running usually over 40 per cent and in some instances nearly to 50 per cent; hence is highly flammable. Most of the coals have very high resin content, the resin usually being in dust form, hence almost as highly flammable as black powder. INTRODUCTION THE recent application of lineal analysis1,2 to the austenite-martensite reaction has made possible a quantitative study of the kinetics of this transformation during rapid cooling. Martensite range curves can thus be constructed to portray the onset of the reaction at [M.] and its subsequent progress as a function of temperature down to and below the ambient. It now seems in order to investigate other aspects of the martensite transformation, using this quantitative method of approach. One of the least understood characteristics of the austenite-martensite reaction is that of stabilization which has been defined by Troiano and Greninger3 as "a lowering of [M.], resulting from aging, without change in chemical composition of the parent solid solution." In other words, if the hardening quench is arrested at a predetermined subcritical temperature (Th) for a sufficient period of time, more austenite may be retained at a given lower or reference temperature (Tr) than if the steel had been cooled directly and rapidly to Tr in the first place. For the purposes of the work at hand, the extent of stabilization produced by the isothermal treatment at Th, is measured explicitly in terms of the excess austenite [(S)] that exists in the steel at Tr, over and above the amount that is normally present after direct quenching to Tr. Tr is conveniently taken to be room temperature, but this choice is not essential and is sometimes undesirable. The holding temperature (Th) may be above or below [M], and still cause stabilization depending upon the chemistry of the austenite. Stabilization has been found to occur in the presence of bainite4 and of martensite5,6,7,8 as well as in the absence of either.9 The phenomenon of stabilization is not concerned with (and may even be obscured by) ferrite formation or any other type of phase change occurring at Th that alters the chemistry of the remaining austenite. Such a structural change would obviously influence the martensite transformation during subsequent cooling. Stabilization, however, is more subtle; it appears to manifest itself without detectable variation of the austenite composition, whether in the presence or absence of transformation products. There are relatively few direct references to stabilization in the literature. The stabilizing effect of room temperature aging and tempering on the subzero transformation of retained austenite has been clearly shown in plain carbon,6.8 low alloy 6.7.8 and high alloy tool steels.10,5 Starting with the as-hardened steel, the degree of stabilization increases with tempering time and temperature through

OKLAHOMA, in 1924, recorded the largest single increase of any state; the total oil production for the year being 176,206,397 bbl. (Oil & Gas Jnl.), which gives an increase over 1923 of about 9 per cent. Oklahoma ranked second in total amount, California being first, and produced almost 25 per cent. of the total production of the United States. This gain in production is accounted for entirely by the rapid development, deeper drilling, and efficient management of productive areas known at the beginning of the year, for, due to the small number of wells drilled, few new pools were discovered and developed up to any important stage during the year. Three major pools, Burbank, Tonkawa and Cromwell, furnished 37 per cent. of the total production. Burbank led by a wide margin, having the largest production of any single pool; there was a steady increase in production until September. The close. development of the pools in Okfuskee, Seminole, and Hughes Counties, together with the new deep-sand production at Tonkawa and increased drilling operations in Osage County, accounted for the big increase shown during the year. In January, 1924, the shutdown movement and curtailment of production in Hewitt and Tonkawa, which had been effective during the year of 1923, were stopped. The shutdown movement and curtailment of operations in 1923 does not give a fair comparison with 1924, as undoubtedly a great deal more oil would have been produced in 1923 had it not been for these measures. The sensational developments during the year, which were certainly beyond the prediction of the oil industry, were the Cromwell field, which started the year with 10,478 bbl. for January and increased rapidly to 1,267,032 bbl. for. December, and the discovery of the Wilcox productions below 4000 ft. in the Tonkawa field in May, which by the end of the year had produced 11,650,000 bbl. In this connection, it can be safely said that 1924 was a banner year for the Wilcox sand series; it has been estimated that between 40,000,000 and 50,000,000 bbl. of the production for the year came from this sand. Although numerous Wilcox pools were opened throughout the state, the big Wilcox production came from. the Tonkawa and Stroud pools. Oklahoma's deepest well, the Kingwood Oil Co. No. 1 Barnett in the northwest corner of the northeast quarter of the southeast quarter of Sec. 7 T. 7 N. R. 10 E., Hughes County, was abandoned in January, at 5281 ft. with numerous good shows recorded, which have stimulated-further drilling in the locality.

Deformation bands of surprising regularity are found in large-grained poly-crystalline copper after cold-rolling (Fig. I). Individual bands frequently are large enough to permit a determination of their orientation by means of etch pits and an optical goniometer. Measurements have been made on 21 areas in seven different grains, and these, combined with X-ray studies of nine single crystals that had been cold-rolled after mounting in a polycrystal-line block, have contributed to a better understanding of the preferred orientations in rolled copper just as similar studies have for rolled iron1 and brass.2,3 Particular attention was given to determining orientations that are stable during rolling and to the manner of fragmentation and rotation of unstable grains. The possible role of twinning was also carefully investigated. The texture of polycrystalline copper after cold-rolling is well established by the pole figures that have been plotted by Schmid and Staffelbach,4 Iweronowa and Schdanow,6 and Brick and Williamson,8 all of which are in substantial agreement. There has been some divergence in the list of individual "ideal" orientations that have been used to describe the texture by these observers and others," although the orientation (110) [II2]—that is, (110) parallel to the rolling plane and [TIP] parallel to the rolling direction—is generally recognized as the most prominent orientation and (112) [III] one of the lesser orientations. Other orientations have been given by some observers as (236) [535], (100) [00I], and (110) [00I]. The texture of copper has also been described as (I35) [533].6,7 The sum of these orientations provides a reasonable approximation to the complete pole figure, but it does not follow that these specific orientations are necessarily of fundamental significance, for the choice of indices is arbitrary, within limits. Furthermore, a detailed investigation of the ideal orientations in cold-rolled iron discloses continuous ranges of equally favored positions rather than definite positions of high stability,' and similarly Brick's observations in a single crystal of a brass2 suggest that all orientations in the range between (110) [II3] and (110) [II7] are about equally stable. Materials and Methods The material used was vacuum-cast electrolytic copper kindly supplied by L. L. Wyman, of the General Electric Co.* Slicec 1/2 in. thick and 21/2 in. square, cut from the ingot, were rolled with 50 per cent reduction per pass to final thicknesses between 0.02 and 0.04 in., and etched to develop cube-face etch pits suitable for goniometric work.8 The etch was light on some strips and deep in others.

INTEREST in the various products of the austenite eutectoid transformation in iron-carbon alloys, particularly as produced by the isothermal sub-critical techniques introduced by Davenport and Bain,1 has resulted in the application of similar heat treatments to other eutectoid transformations. Studies2.3.4 of the beta copper-aluminum alloy eutectoid transformation revealed microstructures very similar to those found in iron-carbon alloys. Investigations5,6 of the kappa phase in the copper-silicon alloy system have established the eutectoid type transformation of this phase into terminal alpha and intermediate gamma phases. This transformation has been reported' as forming a eutectoid type structure in a very sluggish manner by a long time isothermal treatment. The purpose of the present investigation is to study the products of the kappa eutectoid transformation as affected by transformation temperatures by means of microscopic and hardness methods. PREPARATION OF ALLOYS The copper-silicon alloy equilibrium diagram is shown in Fig I. The kappa field converges to a minimum silicon solubility at the eutectoid composition and all other completely kappa alloys are hypereutectoid. Thus, kappa decomposition involves first the proeutectoid precipitation of gamma, followed by the eutectoid transformation of a lower silicon content kappa (5.2 pct). Smith5 has indicated that alloys containing between 5.4 and 5.7 pct silicon could be hot rolled, but that the latter composition was desirable in order to permit a wider kappa temperature range. The alloy was prepared by adding Baker's commercially pure silicon to an ingot of copper-silicon alloy containing 2.34 pct silicon remaining from the investigation of Brick, Martin and Angier.7 Following the casting techniques of Krynitsky, Saunders and Stern,8 the ingot was melted under a heavy layer of dried charcoal in a clay-graphite crucible in a gas-fired pot furnace. Small lumps of silicon were held under the melt surface with a graphite rod. After the silicon had dissolved, the alloy was chill-cast and then remelted without a cover, stirred thoroughly, skimmed and poured into a preheated cast iron mold. The cast microstructure is shown in Fig 2. The casting, 10 X 4 X ¾ in., was annealed at 750°C for 21 brand furnace cooled. About 1/16 in. was milled from all surfaces. The plate was cut in half longitudinally and the bottom half analyzed by A.S.T.M. methods.9 The composition by weight was as follows: copper 94.24 pct, silicon 5.56 pct, iron 0.11 pct.

IN the establishment of the relationship between weldability and hardenability, two methods have been employed in correcting for the grain growth produced in the heat-affected zone: first, the hardenability calculated from chemical composition1 may be corrected to the grain size observed in an actual weld,2 or, second, a hardenability test may be made on the steel quenched from a temperature high enough to produce a grain size comparable to that found in the heat-affected zone.3 In order to obtain grain sizes in the end-quench hardenability bar comparable to those resulting in the base metal from the welding cycle, a quenching temperature of 2100°F. has been used. In studies of the end-quench hardenability specimen quenched from 2100°F. instead of from a lower temperature of 1700°F., it is important to ascertain the relative cooling rates for various distances along the bar. It is a question as to whether the cooling occurs at the same rate or whether there is any significant difference from the standard cooling-rate curve published by Jominy and confirmed by others.4,5 This paper reports experimental evidence concerning the effect of quenching temperature on the cooling rates in the end-quench hardenability test. The effect of quenching temperatures on cooling rates has been studied by a number of investigators.6,7 French has considered this effect from both theoretical and experimental aspects. In French's studies on complete quenching of spheres and rounds, an increase in the quenching temperature caused an increase in the cooling rate at 720°C. at the center of the specimen. The center cooling velocity also has been shown to be dependent upon the surface per unit volume for the type of specimens studied; the velocity of cooling increases with an increase in the surface per unit volume. Three methods of indicating the rapidity of cooling of a body of metal during a quenching operation have been proposed: I. The time it takes for the metal to cool from the quenching temperature to a temperature halfway between the quenching. temperature and the temperature of the quenching medium (half-temperature time): Grossmann, Asimow and Urban7 justify the use of this criterion by the fact that the half-temperature time includes the temperature and time of incubation as well as the zone of formation of pearlite and, further, the data so derived accord very closely with experimental values. 2. A method has been developed for evaluating acid treatments in fractured limestone fields by breaking down pressure drawdown into three component parts: (I) pressure differcntial across "skin" near the borehole face, (2) pressure differential due to flow resistance in the coarse communicating fissures and (3) pressure differential between the fine voids and the coarse fissures. It is apparent that in most successful acid treatments the first term, skin resistance, has been reduced or eliminated. Further, it is often possible to estimate the volume of coarse fissures associated with the second term, coarse fissure flow resistance. In cases where this volume is comparable with practical acid volumes it seems likely that this resistance also may be attacked with a suitably retarded acid. INTROD UCTION Acid treatment has been successfully applied as a general practice in the limestone wells in the Mara/ Maracaibo districts of Venezuela for some 10 years. At the same time the need has been felt for a more precise method of: (1) evaluating the effect of an acid job and (2) selecting wells which should benefit from an acid treatment. The following method, based on an analysis of build-up curves for wells producing from fractured limestone, provides a means of forecasting the effect acid will have on a well and in many cases the probable order of production rate increase which may be expected. In certain cases it is also possible to calculate the fissure volume through which the acid has to be displaced for best results. Various approximations are introduced in the method, but within the limitations of these the analysis gives an indication of how a well, whether previously acidized or not, may be expected to respond to acid treatment. Suitable build-up curves cannot be obtained on "tight" wells which do not give sustained production and the method is not applicable to such wells. Figs. 1 through 7 illustrate various types of build-up curves obtained from limestone wells in Western Venezuela. Curves are included showing (1) both skin and coarse fissure resistance, (2) skin resistance only, (3 and 4) reduction of skin resistance by acidization, (5) fissure resistance only, (6) reduction of coarse fissure resistance by acidization, and (7) acidization failure. This theory has been successfully applied for over three years during which 22 acid treatments have been carried out specifically to reduce skin resistance and three treatments to reduce coarse fissure resistance. The method has been found to be a useful aid in the selection of wells for acidization.

Carbon may affect the alloys of copper in several ways. Provided an alloying element does not oxidize preferentially, even minute quantities of carbon dissolved in liquid alloys of high copper content will form insoluble carbon oxide gases under oxidizing conditions. Gas porosity in castings of high-copper alloys can originate in this way. In certain alloys of low copper content carbon may have considerable solubility and may be an effective deoxidizer. In these alloys carbon will tend to suppress porosity. Carbon that is dissolved in the molten alloy is likely to be retained in the solidified metal. The effects of carbon on the physical properties of the metal are determined by the form in which it is present. Depending on the alloying elements and also on the cooling rate, carbon may precipitate as graphite, may form a carbide or may remain in solid solution on cooling. As solid copper does not dissolve a measurable amount of carbon, a carbon-bearing solid solution can occur only if the copper is alloyed with a large excess of an element that forms such a solution. The effect of graphite or of carbides on the properties of an alloy will depend on the size and distribution of the precipitated particles. As Hensel pointed out in discussion,' the formation of an alloy carbide may interfere with the age-hardening properties of a copper alloy. One would also expect that the presence of carbides or of graphite will under certain conditions promote corrosion or high-temperature failure in nonferrous alloys. Since carbon has an effect on the soundness of castings and affects the structure and behavior of solid copper alloys, its solubility in the liquid alloys is of practical importance. The isothermal change of carbon solubility with alloy composition is of interest from a theoretical standpoint. The binary alloys of copper with manganese and with nickel are used industrially and serve as a base for more complex alloys. The solubility of carbon in each of these metals is known, but its solubility in their alloys has not been determined. Earlier Data The solubility of carbon in molten pure copper is about o.oooi pct at II00°C and 0.0004 pct at 1475°C.l Various authors2""6 have published data on the solubility of carbon in molten manganese. There is agreement on a value of about 6.7 pct in the temperature range r2170 to 1245°c This solubility value corresponds to the formula Mn3C. It increases very little with increasing temperature. Corson7 states that carbon is soluble in copper-manganese alloys and that the
