Ok Tedi Mining Limited commenced construction in mid-1981 of facilities and infrastructure to mine and process gold ore at Mt Fubilan in Papua ew Guinea. Production ofgold began more or less on schedule in mid-1984 although design capacity is yet to be achieved. Due to geotechnical problems, two important items of infrastructure, hydropower and permanent tailings disposal, are not yet in place. Current low metal prices make it likely that copper facilities will be postponed.The deposit compriscs a leached gold capping overlying copper sulphide porphyry mineralisation containing significant gold and molybdenum. Mining is by open pit methods. The soft leached capping gold ore is ripped and dozed, loaded by hydraulic shovel and trucked to a dump pocket. After passing a large semi-autogenous mill of nominal capacity of I, I00 tonnes per hour, the ore is treated by the carbon-inpulp process, with a gravity circuit to recover coarse gold. The final product is 12 kg dore bullion bars.At present, all tailings are detoxified with hydrogen peroxide; after cycloning, the coarse fraction is stored, and the slime fraction discharged into the river system; expected environmental impact is acceptable. Investigations for a suitable dam site for a permanent tailings system are still underway.Peak 'I. hour power demand for Stage I is 17 MW, presently supplied by a diesel alternator power station and a 2 MW mini hydropower plant.Initial access to the base camp at Tabubil was only by air. Eventually a road was pushed through 134 km from the river port at Kiunga (where port facilities have been constructed) and a further 23 km to Mt Fubilan.Roads are constructed of compacted gravel and crushed limestone generally underlain by geofabric. Eight major steel bridges were built.The town of Tabubil has been established, including housing, airport, shops, offices, schools and all facilities.Environmental studies have been extensive and a detailed monitoring program is maintained. Ok Tedi Mining Limited is making considerable efforts to train Papua New Guineans and to foster local business.

"When using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) during tunneling work, unexpected ground conditions can be encountered that are not predicted in the design stage. These reduce the stability of tunnels, and can result in considerable economic losses. This paper analyzes the potential risk events that may occur due to risky ground conditions. A resistivity survey is utilized to predict the risky ground conditions ahead of the tunnel face during construction. The potential risk events are evaluated considering both the occurrence probability and the impact. A TBM risk management system that can suggest proper solution methods for potential risk events is also developed. Multi-Criterion Decision Making (MCDM) is utilized to determine the optimal solution method to handle risk events. Lastly, an actual construction site, at which a risk event occurred during tunnel construction, is analyzed utilizing the Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) Shield TBM, to verify the efficacy of the proposed system.INTRODUCTION The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) method has been widely adopted in numerous tunneling projects because, as a mechanized tunneling method, it is also environmentally friendly, exhibiting minimal noise and vibration when compared with conventional tunneling method. In addition, it provides considerable economic benefits that allow for a high advance rate for long drives during construction. However, the TBM method has a limitation, as it is unable to deal with unexpected situations during construction, as the system is not capable of moving backwards. This leads to delays or even stoppages, and a corresponding increase in construction costs due to the need to arrange for alternative equipment and solutions. It is essential to retain systematic management in order to prevent or deal with unforeseen consequences such as the collapse of a tunnel face, ground surface upheaval or settlement, and construction delay due to water leakage during construction. Therefore, a systematic risk management system that is applicable during the construction stage of the TBM tunnel should be developed, taking into account the predicted risky ground conditions ahead of the tunnel face in advance."

Four field test plots were constructed in 1998 on a sloped waste rock surface at the Myra Falls Operations of Boliden Westmin (Canada) Limited to evaluate hydraulic performance of alternate cover system designs. The field test plot cover systems were designed to control oxygen ingress and water infiltration to the underlying waste rock while providing a medium for a grass and legume vegetation cover. The test plots consisted of a bare waste rock surface (control plot), and three additional plots consisting of native compacted till placed directly on the waste rock surface, overlain by non-compacted till. Two of the test plots included a compacted till layer ameliorated with flyash and bentonite, respectively, to improve moisture retention and reduce permeability. The third test plot consisted of a compacted layer of native till overlain by non-compacted till. A performance monitoring system was installed in each test plot to evaluate net percolation and oxygen ingress to the underlying waste rock. In addition, each test plot has profiles of matric suction, water content, and temperature sensors installed at up-slope and down slope locations. A review of four years of monitoring data shows that the compacted till/bentonite cover system has been most successful in limiting the infiltration of meteoric waters and oxygen ingress to the underlying waste rock material. The compacted till/flyash and compacted till cover systems have produced similar net percolation results and neither have functioned well in maintaining an oxygen ingress layer throughout the year. The amelioration of bentonite with till to produce a compacted barrier layer shows promise in reducing water and oxygen ingress at the MFO site, while the incorporation of flyash with the till did not result in a significant increase in performance. The field performance data clearly demonstrates the need for developing field trials prior to full-scale construction, as opposed to relying solely on an un-calibrated numerical modelling to design the full-scale cover system.

Les valeurs les plus élevées s'accompagnent localement de quelques textures en mosaïque et délimitent une anomalie thermique au centre sud de la région. Parmi les minéraux des argiles identifies, I ‘illite et la chlorite sont terrigènes alors que la smectite, la kaolinite et la corrensite sont authigènes et, à l' instar de I ‘altération de la MO, résultent des nouveaux équilibres chimiques créés suite à la précipitation des sulfures.Abstract - The Gays River Pb-Zn ore deposit is associated with anomalies defmed from the characters of the organic matter (OM) and from the clay minerals assemblages. The relationships between these anomalies and the mineralization at the mine suggest that these parameters can be used as new guides for the exploration for base-metal sulfides in this area.The vitrinite reflectance (RJ shows a wide range of values (0.8% to 1.88%) and exhibits an anomalous suppressive effect with depth of burial at the mine site, suggesting a chemical alteration of the OM. The highest R"" values are associated with mosaic textures and outline a therrnal anomaly at the south-center of the studied area. Among the identified clay minerals, illite and chlorite are terrigenous, whereas smectite, kaolinite and corrensite are authigenous and, like the alteration of the OM, are due to the new chemical equilibria resulting from the precipitation of the sulfides."

As part of a long-term acid rock drainage (ARD) mitigation study, PT Freeport Indonesia has completed the construction of a highly instrumented, full-scale, experimental, overburden stockpile to further evaluate the behaviour of the waste rock system at Grasberg mine. A total of 24 lysimeters, 30 sets of thermistor strings and 48 oxygen-sampling ports were installed at select locations during stockpile construction. ARD flow rates and chemistry have been recorded since the start of overburden rock placement in April 2000. Measurements of in situ temperatures and oxygen concentrations quantify reaction rates and the oxygen pathways that control oxidation kinetics deep within the waste rock profile. Direct field observations show the significance of advective oxygen flow with respect to the onset of oxidation kinetics. Oxygen measurements show that the rubble zone that forms at the base of a waste rock bench provides a critical pathway for oxygen entry to the waste rock profile. Furthermore, rapid oxidation as evidenced by measured temperature increases deep within the panels of waste rock is observed to occur. The observations presented in this paper provide critical insight for understanding the mechanisms and behaviour of full-scale waste rock stockpiles with respect to ARD generation. The results of this program will assist in the future selection, testing and evaluation of appropriate mitigation measures with respect to surface and face treatments to reduce long-term ARD generation. This project is a work in progress, and at least another two-years will be required to fully understand site-specific ARD generation and ARD mitigation mechanisms. This paper will discuss various design and construction considerations, provide an overview of results achieved to date, and some preliminary interpretation of what is happening within the overburden stockpiles.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has collected pillar and span data at 34 stone mines in 10 states to develop pillar and roof span design guidelines for underground stone mines. Pillar, floor and roof conditions each contribute significantly to the overall mine stability. The roof may be stable for a century, or it may appear to be stable but fail with little warning. Clearly, an assessment of the mine roof is critical to the safety of these operations. However, up until now, the assessment of the mine roof came primarily from exposures in roof falls or portal areas. This provides only limited information, and a more proactive approach is needed to assess changing mine conditions. A separate effort was undertaken to examine the roof structure with the use of a borescope. Numerous physical and geologic roof structures were observed with a stratascope/borehole video camera. The objective of this work was to develop a technique of assigning numerical values to features seen within the mine roof and apply those values to formulate a roof stability evaluation. Such features as changes in color, grain size, and general lithologies are readily observed. Minor structures in the rock, fossils and fractures are also readily identified. Each feature may have a variable and site-specific impact on roof quality. A number of mines were visited and a series of holes were borescoped in each mine. The features identified in the roof were classified and potential for roof damage related to each feature was assessed. A process is presented that relates the structures and their locations to provide a numerical value, or roof quality index that can be used to assess roof stability.

Location of Mine and Mill The concentrator of the Timber Butte Milling Co. was built to treat the ore mined at the Elm Orlu mine of the Elm Orlu Mining Co., which carries zinc and lead in sphalerite and galena; copper in bornite, chal-cocite, tennantite, and tetrahedrite; and gold and silver either free or chemically combined with the sulphides of the base metals. The gangue is chiefly quartz, barite, fluorite, rhodonite, and rhodocrosite. The iron in the ore occurs as irqn pyrites. The Elm Orlu mine is situated in Butte, Silver Bow County, Mont., near the northern border of what is locally known as the Butte sulphide-copper belt, about one mile north of the Anaconda mine, and adjoining the Black Rock zinc mine of the Butte & Superior Co. on the southwest. The mill is on the northern slope of Timber Butte, a prominent topographical landmark in the Butte district. This site permits to a large extent the gravity system of ore flow; it presents a convenient and extensive area for a tailings pond; and it is comparatively near to the source of water supply and to existing railroads.

The beginning of Colorado's mining industry is linked on one side with that of the Appalachian districts and on the other side with that of California, because the first discoveries were made by pioneers when on their way from Georgia to California. In the summer of 1849 a party of seven Georgians were taking a herd of thoroughbred horses across the continent to the Pacific coast. They reached Camp Lyon, on the Arkansas river, in October, and, meeting James Dempsey, a Government guide, they were persuaded by him that it was too late to cross the mountains that season. His advice was accepted, and, moving northward, they established a winter camp at the junction of Cherry creek with the Platte, close to the site of the city of Denver. Upon a sand-bar, lining the south side of the river, they built two cabins. During the closing months of 1849 they prospected the alluvial banks of Cherry creek, but they made no attempt to penetrate into the mountain canyons, near them, westward, for fear of the Indians.* They found gold in several places along Cherry creek, and particularly at a spot 16 miles up the stream from their camp. From the feathers of the wild geese that they shot they obtained quills in which they placed their gold-dust. This party of Georgians consisted of Dr. L. J. Russell and his brother, Green Russell, also A. T. Lloyd, G. W. Kiker, and P. H. Clark. Early in 1850 they crossed the main range of the Rocky Mountains by the Bridger pass and went on to California. Wide variation in the nature of the coal seams and the surrounding rock mass of the Indian coalfields and very little information about the associated stress fields were observed to be the major hurdles in the straight forward application of a continuous miner (CM) based mechanised depillaring approach. Due to various techno-economic reasons, a considerably large number of coal seams have been developed and are standing on pillars in India. The development of pillars is done as per Indian coal mines regulation, which results in pillars of relatively large size. In fact, the large size of the pillars provides stiff natural support to control caving of the massive overlying strata. However, the size of these pillars is not conducive for the single pass pillar stripping technique and, therefore, there is a need for pillar splitting before pillar extraction/retreating. Splitting of the pillar may reduce the competency/stiffness of the pillar, which creates a chance of overriding during final extraction below a massive roof stratum. This paper first discusses the existing coal mining scenario in India followed by a brief presentation of geo-technical details of pillar extraction at the three sites where a CM has been introduced for depillaring/pillar retreating in the country to date. Based on past rock mechanics experiences with conventional depillaring faces, stability issues of the pillars, fenders, and stumps in and around the depillaring face are discussed. This may prove to be an important factor in the success of future CM faces. It is recognized that the application of the modern strata movement monitoring techniques may improve operation safety by providing valuable qualitative and quantitative information that can be used to improve the design of modern concepts like roof bolt based breaker line support during pillaring.

The mining and exploration industries have been using Geostatistics (Matheron, 1963) for the past forty years. It has been extensively incorporated into three dimensional block modeling software whose usage has reflected the growth in the use of personal computers since 1980. Because of the utility of geostatistical models in mining and production planning, much of the modern reserve and resource modeling is done by mining engineers, geostatisticians and geological engineers. Explorationists are initially less concerned with three dimensional models until such time as a deposit has been roughly delineated. However, the concept of regionalized variables in ore deposits deals with the effect of spatial correlations between data points in a three dimensional sample space and should be useful for optimizing the spacing of drill holes to allow maximum bang-for-the-buck in drilling programs. This paper examines three common deposit types (porphyry copper, VMS and intrusive gold) to examine whether geostatistical methods have been used to minimize drilling costs because of better understanding of spatial correlations. The three model types were chosen from publicly available corporate websites of Canadian based Junior Mining Companies. They include the Wolverine polymetallic zinc deposit of Yukon Zinc in Yukon, Canada; the El Morro Deposit in Chile (30 percent ownership by New Gold Mining Company, and the Fort Knox Gold deposit in Alaska and 50 percent ownership by Nova Gold Resources). Typically, individual mining corporations post their technical reports as CNI 43-101 reports on their corporate website as indications of the favorability or progress on their more exciting properties. Data considered for this paper was not collected or generated by the author, but the information was extracted from these publicly available sites and had a variety of authorship.

A method of error analysis has been applied to the location technique of non-linear least squares iterative inversion in order to evaluate the resolving power of several seismic array configurations with various assumed earth models and errors and inaccuracies in arrival times. The results obtained demonstrate that lateral accuracies of location are improved significantly when the depth of the miner is known. Lateral location to within 100 feet appears achievable in many instances. If it is possible to refine earth models significantly beyond what has normally been assumed in this work by the use of on-site data, or if the mine is shallow (300 feet or less), accuracies of-about 30 feet or so may be attainable. Inaccuracies in earth models of about 5% are found to contribute much more heavily to these location inaccuracies than errors of a few milliseconds in picking arrival times; however, arrival time errors of 15-20 ms or above will dominate these model inaccuracies. The expected accuracy of location is found to fall off very rapidly as the miner moves outside the array. The strength of this effect depends markedly upon the geometry of the array configuration and can be reduced by careful design. Also, as the size of the array is increased, expected location errors within the array are not altered much, but continue to match the error associated with the smaller array over a larger area (assuming that all stations can still pick up the miner's signals). Better location accuracy, especially with respect to depth control is achievable in an earth where the velocity is depth-dependent (increasing with depth) than in one which is homogeneous. Past investigations of seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) focused on actively forming sites. New technologies are needed to explore for SMS deposits which have finished their active phase and are possibly covered by sediments or lava. For this purpose the new marine transient electromagnetic (TEM) induction system MARTEMIS was developed by GEOMAR. The system was used for investigations in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Palinuro Seamount) and at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (TAG area) and proved to be suitable for operations at shallow (~600m) and great water depths (~3600m) in steep and difficult terrain. Calibration measurements in the water column demonstrate that it is possible to acquire high quality data, which is fit to be evaluated in terms of inversions. However, these calibration measurements also demonstrated that great care has to be taken in the design of such an inductive coil system, because relatively small metal structures attached to the system may lead to significant static distortions in the measured transients. The interpretation of TEM data acquired at the Palinuro Seamount show a conductive layer in the vicinity of a previously drilled, buried SMS occurrence and serve as proof of principle of the system. Results also indicate that the conductive SMS unit is indeed a confined layer with limited thickness between 3 – 5m, which was not known from previous drilling. In a similar manner, results also hint at an unknown mineralization at depth in a second area of the Palinuro Seamount. Investigations by TEM measurements were accompanied by measurements of the ambient electric field (→ self-potential) and seafloor temperatures with a heatflow probe as well as direct sampling with a gravity corer. The areal coverage of measurements and sampling allow for a greatly enhanced view of the structure.

Gold has been often used as an alloying component in order to increase or modify the catalytic properties of an active metal. For example, in the hydroconversion of methylcyclopentane, Riahi et al [1] shown that the addition of gold to palladium or platinum enhances the activity which becomes greater than that of the pure metals whereas the selectivity towards products resulting from ring expansion increases. Molenbroek et al [2] presented a detailed study on Ni-Au catalysts which exhibit activity for steam reforming and have been proved to be more resistant toward carbon formation than the pure Ni catalysts. Blocking of highly reactive Ni edge and kink sites by Au atoms is assumed to be the reason for the increased robustness of the Ni-Au catalyst. Nevertheless, the own catalytic properties of pure gold have been almost ignored up to the pioneering work of Haruta et al [3] which demonstrates the high activity of gold for CO oxidation at low temperatures. Other reactions such as WGS reaction, propylene epoxidation or benzene total oxidation have then been shown to be catalyzed by gold [4]. This discovery induced the publication of papers devoted to analyze the different factors controlling the activity of gold catalysts. Among them the most relevant appears to be the gold particle size, the nature of the support [5] and the preparation methods [6]. Clearly distinguish between support and size effect is not straightforward. Indeed, the calcination step often needed to synthesize supported catalysts on different supports, leads to different particle sizes showing that particle size and support are interdependent. To circumvent this difficulty, Au-based supported catalysts have been synthesized by using laser vaporization and low energy cluster beam deposition. The as prepared catalysts have then been characterized and tested in CO oxidation reaction.

Many persons hold the opinion that the metal indus- ries are fortuitous and that the occupation is one of sordid toil, and altogether a kind of business requir- ing not so much skill as labour. But as for myself, when I reflect carefully upon its special points one by one, it appears to be far otherwise. So wrote Georgius Agricola in 1556. He could have been espousing the sentiments of an indus- trial archaeologist investigating mining sites in 1986. South Australia has a very rich legacy from its industrial past-especially in the area of its mining history. Industrial archaeology, which is part of the broad field of archaeology, is concerned with the material and documentary remains of this industrial past. This includes the products and processes of manufacturing, industrial, technolog- ical and engineering activity and their relation- ships to people and the environment. `Archaeology' immediately conjures up the image of excavations in Greece or Eygpt. Excavation however is only a part of archaeological methodology. Industrial archaeology utilizes documentary historical rec- ords combined with field survey techniques (both above and below ground) to create a composite picture of the past. Interest in our recent past has burgeoned in Australia in the last few years. This interest manifests itself in many ways-the unprecedented popularity of Australiana and col- lecting, the plethora of Australian historic films, the growth of the National Trust, local historical societies and genealogical research. Fortunately these trends have been reflected in academic and legislative circles. Various univers- ities, institutes of technology and colleges of advanced education run courses in aspects of cul- tural resource management and conservation of the historic environment. These courses are com- prised of archaeology, architecture, geography, his- tory, materials conservation, museum studies, and national parks management and planning.

This paper describes operational experience with seam gas and spontaneous combustion management, gained during ten years of production history (1993 to 2003) in the Wynn seam at Dartbrook Coal mine. In addition, comparisons are made with more recent operational experience in the overlying Kayuga seam. Development and retreat longwall operations were undertaken in a 4.0 m thick working section of the Wynn seam, contained within the lower quarter of a circa 24 m thick mega seam, from 1993 until mining operations were relocated to the overlying Kayuga seam in 2004. Production from the first block of the Kayuga seam is currently underway with seam gas and spontaneous combustion management requirements being refined as further operational experience is gained. Seam gas management techniques, including pre-drainage with pressurised fracturing, surface to underground goaf drainage of a carbon dioxide rich seam gas and novel, high capacity ventilation circuits, were employed in the Wynn seam. Ventilation strategies included operating up to carbon dioxide STEL concentrations of 3.0 per cent in segregated return airways rather than being limited to the TWA-TLV concentration of 1.25 per cent. The spontaneous combustion experience at Dartbrook Coal has, to some degree, resulted in a change in the way the risk is managed in Australian coal mines. Values of carbon monoxide make and hydrogen concentrations are profoundly different from previously recommended management plan trigger levels and those used elsewhere in the industry. However, the detection of higher hydrocarbons together with rising oxygen depletion ratios and absolute hydrogen concentrations remain as indicators of advancing spontaneous combustion events. In this respect, experience gained in the Wynn seam was important in the initial management of the shallower Kayuga seam, an essentially greenfield site with no prior operational experience being available.

Generalized conditions for rod or ribbon growth by the twin plane re-entrant edge mechanism are given. It was shown that this mechanism can result in growth of twinned platelets from dilute metal solutions. The platelrts 01 the fee metals are faceted by (111) planes and contain two or more twin planes. Microsegregation traces were revealed in silver grown from a thallium solution. VOGEL has already set down conditions for dendritic growth;1 however, this was the normal single-crystal dendritic growth experienced during solidification. In this work it is desired to set down the crystallographic conditions that will lead to rod or ribbon growth with smooth facets. These are as follows. a) The growth must be crystallographically limited (i.e., faceted growth). b) In order to have directed growth, some mechanism must allow easier nucleation than two-dimensional nucleation. That mechanism is afforded by the re-entrant edges at twin planes.213 Thus there must be twin planes present in the rods or ribbons. c) The growth direction must lie in the twin plane. If not, the twin plane will grow to the face or side of the ribbon and the site of easy nucleation will be lost. d) The growth direction must be parallel to at least one plane of the faceting planes, and no set of the faceting planes can be perpendicular to the growth direction. A corollary to these conditions involves the number of twin planes necessary to maintain the indestructible re-entrant edge. The number depends on the crystal structure of the material. An analysis of the data available shows that a material whose faceting planes form an open figure requires at least one twin plane while materials whose faceting planes form a closed figure require at least two twin planes in order to form the indestructible re-entrant edges for extended growth. The conditions and an assessment of the possibility of rod or ribbon growth are given in Table I for several crystal systems. As can be seen the fee, diamond and zinc blende, or-thorhombic, rhombohedral, and one form of the hexagonal lattice systems can yield this type of growth, but not the bcc metals nor the hexagonal

9.1 INTRODUCTION Precious metals in a leach solution are extracted, concentrated, and purified to complete the process begun in the heap and to produce an end product which will provide an economic payback to the mine developer/operator. Several different processes are required to convert the dissolved precious metals into pure metal bars. This chapter discusses the actual production of metal once it has been recovered from the pregnant leach solutions by the zinc cementation (Merrill -Crowe) or carbon adsorption processes. Metal production is generally taken to mean the production of a fairly pure "dore" bar. This chapter also reiterates some information from Chapter 8 in a slightly different context, since the focus of Chapter 8 was a fairly detailed description of the two actual recovery processes, whereas the focus of this chapter is metal production. The sale of an intermediate precious metal product is possible (as opposed to the production of dore bars at the mine site); however, the value of the precious metals is reduced by the various charges and risks associated with precious metal processing. For this reason, most operators choose to produce the most refined metal possible in order to maximize project economics. Precious metals may be extracted from the leach solution by both conventional and unconventional processes. The conventional processes are activated carbon/electrowinning (ACE) and zinc precipitation (ZIP). The unconventional processes are resin ion exchange, solvent extraction, and direct electrowinning. A typical ACE process has two circulating loops. The first loop adsorbs the cyanide-metal complexes from the dilute leach solution onto the activated carbon. A second, separate solution loop removes the cyanide-metal complexes from the activated carbon into a strong solution, the electrowinning electrolyte. Activated carbon is transferred from one fluid loop to the other. The operating cost of the ACE process is directly proportional to the quantity of carbon stripped and thus to the quantity of precious metal produced. A study was conducted to describe the microbiology of the MICCL Monywa chalcocite heap bioleaching operation. Microorganisms were detected in the heap using culture-based techniques and cultureindependent PCR-DGGE analysis of the 16S rRNA gene. The metabolic requirements, temperature and pH optima were determined for selected strains isolated from the heap material. Six strains (BH1-BH6) were enriched and isolated from heap solids and leachate samples. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA genes showed that strains BH3 and BH4 were closely related to the acidophilic bacterium Acidithiobacillus caldus and strains BH5 and BH6 were closely related to Leptospirillum ferriphilum. The optimum growth temperature for L. ferriphilum was 41.3¦C and the optimum pH range was 1.1 to 1.5. A new species of Archaea was isolated from the heap samples. Cells of the proposed species, Ferroplasma cyprexacervatum (æcyprusÆ L.n. meaning copper; æexacervoÆ L.v. meaning æto heap upÆ), are non-motile pleomorphic cocci, capable of chemomixotrophic growth with ferrous sulfate and yeast extract. Cells grow anaerobically on ferric iron in the presence of potassium tetrathionate and yeast extract as electron donors. Growth occurs from 14¦C to 63¦C, with an optimum temperature of 55.2¦C. The optimal pH for growth was 1.0 - 1.2. The species was phylogenetically most closely related to Ferroplasma acidiphilum with a 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 95 per cent. Molecular analysis of mine samples (16S rRNA PCR-DGGE) detected the above-mentioned cultured strains of microorganisms as well as species of Sulfobacillus and other unknown Proteobacteria. The microbial community of the Myanmar bioleach heaps contained similar levels of diversity to a dump bioleach operation in Chile, but contained greater amounts of biomass than another heap bioleach operation in Australia. The operating parameters of the Myanmar heaps (low pH and moderate temperature) have selected for the growth of moderately thermophilic microorganisms that are more commonly found in extremely low pH acidic mine drainage sites than in heap systems. The novel species of Ferroplasma is thought to be involved in the aerobic and anaerobic cycling of iron within the heap bioleaching environment.

SUMMARY La Granja copper deposit, in terms of volume, is among the five largest deposits in the world and represents reserves of three thousand million tones. The field consists of a 40 m. thick layer of copper lying over the secondary ore and further down the primary copper. The flotation process has indicated a recovery rate of 88 to 90 percent and concentrates of 27 to 32 percent of copper. The acid leaching process of low grade ore produces financially acceptable results. To carry out the project, it is necessary to build long distance pipelines and a port. Both the Feasibility Study and the Environmental Impact Study on the project have been approved by the Peruvian government. INTRODUCTION La Granja is located in the district of Querecoto, province of Chota, in the department of Cajamarca, in the Northwest of the country (Figure 1). Geographically it is situated on the eastern slopes of the Andean mountains at an altitude of 2,000 to 2,700 m.a.s.1. (Figure 1). The site is an 8 hour car ride from the city of Chiclayo, capital of the department. The first 60 km. are over a paved road and the remaining distance is over a narrow hard dirt road. The copper porphyry of La Granja was discovered between 1969 to 1971 during some geochemical prospecting activities carried out by the State mining institution, Ingeomin (currently Ingemmet). From 1978 to 1982, Ingemmet continued with its geochemical and geophysical studies supported by a German technical assistance program. A total of 19 bore- holes were drilled (5,814 m.) and a 90 m. long tunnel made. This study calculated reserves of 175 million MT. In 1993, Minero Peru drew up a technical-financial study based on the above studies and proposed a 12 year extraction operating program: 20,000 MT daily using the leaching process, followed by 13 years of operation using the flotation process with the same daily volumes. Diagnosis of the surface chemical factors playing a part in flotation separation of a value sulfide phase requires measurement of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic species that are statistically different between the concentrate and tail streams. Statistical methods, based on the monolayer-sensitive time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) technique, have been developed towards this ultimate aim by measuring hydrophobic species (collector ions, dimers and metal complexes, polysulfides) as well as hydrophobic metal ions, precipitates and added depressant species. Reliable identification of specific mineral particles is central to this statistical analysis. A chalcopyrite/pyrite/ sphalerite mineral mixture conditioned at pH 9 for 20 minutes to study transfer of Cu from chalcopyrite via solution to the other two mineral surfaces, since this mechanism can be responsible for their inadvertent flotation in copper recovery, showed no statistical difference in the copper intensities on pyrite and sphalerite (selected from Fe and Zn images) after this conditioning. Principal component analysis (PCA) identifies combinations of factors strongly correlated (positively or negatively) in images or spectra from sets of data. In images, PCA selects these correlations from the mass spectra recorded at each of 256 ¦ 256 pixels in a selected area of particles. In the image mode, PCA has proved to be a much better method of selecting particles by mineral phase with clearer definition of particle boundaries due to multi-variable recognition. It has clearly separated a statistical difference in copper intensities between the sphalerite and pyrite phases. The PCA method has been applied to concentrate and tails samples collected from the Inco Matte Concentrator demonstrating extensive CuOH and NiOH transfer between the chalcocite (Cc) and heazlewoodite (Hz) minerals. Statistical differences illustrate the important discriminating depressant action of NiOH in flotation despite the activation of Hz by Cu transfer. The adsorption of the collector at specifically-identified Cu sites has been elucidated by the study. Importantly, the statistical analysis has been able to confirm some mechanisms and deny others proposed to control recovery and selectivity giving more focus on the control factors.
