A number of infrastructure projects are on progress all around Greece at the moment. The common propose of these a project is the promotion of quality in: Design, construction and maintenance stages. They also comply with environmental management, which is, a method of organizing and implementing environmental protection measures. The paper includes by special reference on two important modern transport infrastructure projects for the development of Greece and its communication with Europe and the Balkans. Their landscape types and natural vegetation, local climate, geological conditions, altitudes, aspects and soil types vary As a result, upland landscapes in particular, are endangered. Due to the complex of nature of this environment, the development and the landscape design of the projects is a high challenging task. Wherever the nature of the projects requires intervention to the environment, they intend to follow the direct restoration of landscape and method for ecological balance. The implementation of landscape design of infrastructure projects, aims at restoring the landscape affected by construction works, incorporating transport works into the landscape, emphasizing on areas of particular interest (e.g. archaeological sites), while at the same time observing the principles of an efficient operation and safe use of the alignment. Landscape design provides, among others for the protection of slopes against surface erosion and the reinforcement of their stability, the improvement of road functionality, the aesthetic improvement of the landscape, adaptation of the road landscape to the greater environment, visual guidance of the user, screening of lights of the vehicles moving in the opposite direction, the protection against wind etc. The landscape design strategy and landscape applications are specified by special landscape guidelines and specifications that can be considered as part of the sustainable development of a alignment creating a high a esthetic scenery, ensuring the security of transportation and the environmental protection.

Pajingo gold mine produces over 240 000 oz Au per year from underground mining using longitudinal bench stoping methods with a 15 m sublevel interval. Average mine head grade is around 12 g/t Au, contained within quartz veins between 0.5 to 16 m wide. The veins dip steeply (>60¦) and exhibit strike variations which lead to many curved and meandering drive/stope geometries. Unplanned dilution at Pajingo is predominantly controlled by fault planes that subparallel the vein and commonly lead to slabbing failure from the stope walls. Initial efforts at determining maximum spans were based on using the Stability Graph method of stope stability. However the method had a number of shortcomings that did not address mine site observations, including previous mining, interaction of different joint sets and the presence of discrete shears which resulted in poor prediction of stability. A method was developed to rate the risk of dilution for a stope based on observations made in the ore drives. The method utilises profile mapping of the ore drive, structural features observed and the orebody itself, on 10 m spaced sections along the ore drive. A matrix of factors determines the dilution risk for stoping at the time of mapping and the rating is transferred to longsection plots in the office. The dilution risk rating is used to determine the position and density of cable bolt support aimed at lessening the risk, and can be used to review blasthole designs prior to finalisation. The method has been used for more than two years and has proven to be a good indicator of potential unplanned dilution (ie waste outside of ring design). A recent review of the dilution risk mapping process has indicated it is assisting in reducing the impact of dilution at the operation and has the scope to be utilised further in the design process.

INTRODUCTION Since 1975, Union Carbide Corporation has been conducting uranium exploration in southwestern South Dakota. This program has resulted in the discovery of an ore body about eight miles north of Edgemont in Fall River County. The site which was previously mined for uranium in the 1950's and 1960's consists of 950 lode claims (approximately 20,000 acres) and is within the Black Hills National Forest. Preliminary development plans indicate that fewer than 200 surface acres will be involved in the mining and heap leaching of the ore. The ore occurs in both the Fall River and Lakota formations. The exploration to date has developed something in excess of two million tons of ore averaging -0.1% U308. About 75% of the ore is expected to be mined from underground with 25% coming from five to seven small pits. The surface mining will be extensions of previously mined areas with a disturbance of 35-40 new acres near 35-40 previously disturbed acres requiring a total reclamation of 70-80 acres. Several options for processing the ore including conventional milling by UCC, conventional milling in joint venture with another producer, and heap leaching are under consideration. This paper is concerned with the preliminary assessment of the heap leaching option based on the limited test work conducted on surface samples and on available cores from the deeper ones. The final design for a commercial operation will not be available until an underground bulk sample has been obtained and evaluated. Dartbrook Coal is currently developing a modern, high production (3.5 Mtpy) single longwall retreat coal mine in the Upper Hunter Valley of NSW, Australia. The location is a green field site, with no surface or underground mining operations ever having taken place in the initial target seams. The coal seams of the working section, floor and immediate roof average a total 20 m in thickness and contain a mixed carbon dioxide 1 methane seam gas ranging from 6.5 to 11.0 m3/t. The target seams have undergone detailed characterisation to assess hazards and quantify the controls required to minimise associated risks during mining. Risks identified during initial phases of exploration and 14 months of development include: • High gas emission during development. • Probable high longwall gas emission rate. • Medium to high propensity to spontaneous combustion • Possible carbon dioxide outbursts on geological structures • The main controls currently in place include, • Mine geometry and ventilation circuits • Exploratory drilling ahead of development • Intensive in seam pre drainage • Goaf drainage plants • Comprehensive monitoring systems • Underground environmental management plan. • Pre mining predictions of gas emission provided an indication of gas emission rates which have proven to be an under estimate. Current mine issues are; • Both surface fans are at full capacity (250 m3/s 1.4 kPa) • Both gas drainage pumps are at full capacity (2.3 m3/s) • Alternatives to extensive in seam pre drainage being investigated (surface to in seam hydro fracture) Review of mine design underway This paper describes the seam characterisation, assessment of mining hazards and summary of the management plan developed to address the risks identified. Mine, mill, and smelter wastes aggregating billions of tons are scattered across the country as unattractive barren piles that mar the natural beauty of the land. As the population of the United States increases and the demand for land intensifies, populous centers are slowly encroaching on these formerly isolated wastes. Encroachment sharply intensifies the importance of controlling the air and water pollution derived from natural weathering of such wastes. Use or stabilization of these wastes comprises the only viable means for minimizing pollution. Utilization is preferable to stabilization, because full use would both eliminate the waste and broaden the mineral resource base. However, the wastes typically comprise immense tonnages of materials discarded by selective mining or after recovering the significant mineral values by milling and/or smelting. Only rarely can such low-grade material be reprocessed to extract additional minerals at a profit. Some mineral wastes are suitable for disposal as mine fill, railroad and highway road ballast, and land fill. Similarly, some mineral wastes can be utilized as raw materials for making brick, rock wool, concrete, and ceramic products. Several means exist for stabilization of relatively fine-sized wastes, which constitute the chief sources of air and water pollution. These include physical, chemical, and vegetative stabilization, and combinations thereof. Massive coverings of coarse slag, concrete, and soil may be used to prevent erosion of waste piles. A variety of chemicals can be used to bond the particles of fine-size waste into a relatively inert mass. However, the most promising method of producing an esthetically appealing storage site is vegetative stabilization. Numerous species of plants can germinate, grow, and reseed in waste materials which have been adequately prepared to support plant life.

Kambalda Nickel Mines (KNM) currently have eight operating underground mines, three on care and maintenance and other orebodies at various stages of development. Each operation differs greatly in scale, ore grade, milling characteristics and cost structure. The optimum number of mines operating at any one time and their level of production, within the constraints of mill blending requirements and overall mill capacity, is the key to maximising profit in a climate of fluctuating nickel price. Cost models are developed for each mining operation which relate ore tonnes mined to total cost per pound of nickel produced from that mine. Aggregating the mine cost models provides a composite cost model for the entire operation. The cost models provide the operating levels necessary for each of the mines and hence Kambalda as a whole, to operate at the lowest cost per pound of nickel produced. However, lowest operating cost does not necessarily lead to maximum profit. The level of nickel price above operating cost can dictate maximum profit positions which are contrary to the lowest cost position. In addition, the decision to temporarily shutdown mines or reopen mines in response to nickel price movements comes at a cost. In considering the optimum operating position, the price of production capacity flexibility needs to be taken into account. This paper describes the process used to assess all these factors in arriving at the optimum operating position for Kambalda Nickel Mines for varying nickel prices. The same methodology can be used by corporate management in managing multiple mine sites as well as mine management managing multiple orebodies or stoping blocks for maximum profit.

INTRODUCTION The committee on Rock Mechanics, Japanese Society for Civil Engineers, has been discussing 'soft rock engineering in Japan' and presented several papers concerning dam, tunnel, bridge and slope constructions to International Symposium on Weak Rock, Tokyo 1981. This is the summarized paper based on References of Okamoto et a1 (1981), Iida et a1 (1981), Working Group on Tunneling-JSCE (1981), Working Group on Bridge Foundations-JSCE (1951) and Kikuchi et a1 (1981), which can convey general view on engineering experiences with weak rocks in Japan. From the point of view to the origin and/or distinctive physical properties, weak rocks in Japan may be classified into (1) sedimentary, (2) weathered, (3) low welded-pyroclastic and (4) fractured ones. Their typical characteristics are summarized in the following section. Concerning dam foundations on soft rock, several hundreds have already been constructed and, at present, nearly one hundred are under construction or at planning stage. These dams, almost without exception, have some problems such as site selection, material selection for fill-type and concrete dams, design of dam and its foundation, and construction procedures, requiring special ingeneous and cautious measures to cope with the local geotechnical difficult situations. In tunneling, for the decade of 1970s, the number of tunnels in soft rock either completed or under construction was at least 160, including Seikan Tunnel of 53.9 km long, Nakayama Tunnel of 14.8 km long and so on. A dynamic agglomeration, heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning software, called NICO, has been developed in order to either design or simulate copper ore recovery plants. NICO contains a library of routines, each representing a unit operation or piece of equipment, which are assembled like a meccano to match almost any wet plant configuration. Routines include agglomeration or curing either in drums or belts, belt conveyors, heap stacking and reclaiming, heap leaching of oxide, sulfide or mixed copper ores, heap irrigation, drainage, ponds, mixer-settlers, filters, columns, coalescers, tanks, electrowinning cells, pumps, and all connections and related piping. All models are semi- phenomenological, i.e., they include all physical-chemical, mass, thermal, transport equations, which are required to represent as closely as possible the equipment or unit operation. However, operating experience has been incorporated into the model in order to make it simpler, faster and reliable. This experience has been tested in several plants in Chile since 1992. Site meteorological data is simulated also; in this way the model is responsive to weather conditions (temperature, solar radiation, ambient humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind velocity, etc). NICO has been used recently for design and optimization studies in copper plants in Chile like Radomiro Tomic, Collahuasi and Zaldivar. A user-friendly interface allows fast and comprehensive simulations. The entire plant is shown in a single graphic screen, so the user can see all the relevant information, and soft-keys are provided in order to change parameters on-line and watch their effect in final copper production in cathodes. Model also calculates and reports operating parameters, as well as estimated investments and operating costs.

This trainer?s guide is designed as a reference manual. The purpose is to offer information and examples to skills trainers to assist them in structuring training for new operators of Walk-Thru roof bolting machines. Trainers can use this manual as a resource for helping trainees learn, understand, and apply knowledge and skills. In this sense, the guide is not prescriptive. It is designed to offer information and trigger ideas on what might be done to accelerate learning to those who are new to the roof-bolting task. On-site trainers can modify this guide to fit their conditions, machines and equipment, and work procedures. They can integrate roof control plans, company policies and procedures, and operators? manuals from the manufacturers of the original equipment into this guide. Every trainee is different and will come to the job with varying levels of relevant knowledge and skills. The trainer?s decisions on where to start, how to organize the on-the-job and classroom training portions, and when and how to offer different aspects of the training will be based on (1) a pretraining assessment of the trainee?s knowledge and skills and (2) the trainer?s experience in conducting skills training. The ?Skill Check? section might be useful for deciding where training should start among miners who have underground experience but limited knowledge of roof-bolting techniques. Every job carries a learning curve and likely has a number of ?teachable moments? where significantly new knowledge and skills can be learned.

The Cananea porphyry copper-deposit is the site of the second largest mining operation in Mexico. Mineralization is related to quartz-monzonite Laramide stocks that intrude volcanic and volcaniclastic Mesozoic rocks. The ore deposit is a stockwork and breccia-pipes system with Cu-Mo sulfides and pervasive quartz-sericite hydrothermal alteration. A study was made of the arsenic distribution in the mine and the ore-dressing plants. The arsenic (As) in the mine is related to a feldspathic quartz-porphyry type rock associated mainly with the breccia pipe structures (100-700 ppm As in the Veta 7 Breccia). There is vertical zoning, with As decreasing in the deepest part of the breccias. This As mineralization corresponds to a later sulfide hydrothermal stage. The concentrates are made of Cu, Fe and Mo sulfides and some minor quantities of As minerals. The most important copper minerals are chalcocite-covellite, bornite and chalcopyrite. Some of these minerals have 390-880 ppm As. The main As mineral is enargite[ [Cu2.97Fe0.06(As0.90 Sb0.01Pb0 01 )0.92 S4 051 and there are traces of stibioluzonite-luzonite I Cu, .95(Aso.4vSbu.49)0.9rfS4.07-Cu2 93(Aso.H4Sba.10)0.94S4.13] and of another stibioluzonite mineral type with substitution of As by Bi[Cu,96(Ascr,,'Sb0ccrB'OJ3jI~6S] These minerals contribute 80% of the As in the concentrates.

The project team was tasked with the design and installation of a deep foundation system to support an expansion to a power generating station in Glenrock WY. Cast-in-place piles installed by a fixed mast drilling platform were assessed to be the most efficient foundation system for the subgrade conditions and range of design loads for the project. It was determined that conventional augered, cast-in-place piles could not be installed to the required pile toe elevations. Subsurface materials consisted of interbedded coarse- and fine-grained soils to about 23 ft to 30 ft depth below the ground surface, underlain by carbonaceous shale (claystone) with interbedded sandstone. The overburden materials varied from very soft to medium stiff and loose to dense. The claystone was typically foliated and very weak to weak whereas the sandstone was typically massive and very weak to weak. The site characterization consisted of a variety of field and laboratory programs including soil borings with Standard Penetration Tests, pressure-meter testing, and geophysical testing. A load test program was performed involving the compressive, lateral, and tensile testing of piles ranging from 14-in to 24-in diameter. Compression test piles were instrumented with vibrating wire strain gages. The paper includes a discussion of the regional and local geologic and geotechnical parameters, particularly the results of the various in situ and laboratory test programs. The selected foundation system is introduced. Load test results are then presented along with analysis and discussion of these results with regard to performance of the piles in the claystone.

A quarter of the North Island, New Zealand is covered by weathered volcanic tephras of mainly andesitic and rhyolitic compositions. Rapid weathering of basic volcanic glass and slower weathering of acidic glass have produced short-range order alumino-silicate clays such as allophane. Although amorphous to x-rays they have a high degree of local structure. Allophane comprises hollo spheres of approximately 40 diameter and 7 X wall thickness. This small particle size and morphology gives a very high surface area (up to 800 m2/g). Ferrihydrite is another short-range order clay of similar small size and high surface area; it has ò formed from the rapid oxidation of water containing ferrous iron derived from volcanic rocks. The quantity of allophane present in tephra depends upon the climate, the nature of the volcanic glass and the time it has weathered. In New Zealand highest amounts (-50%) occur in beds of andesitic ash deposited on old ignimbrite surfaces with mean annual rainfalls >1600 mm. Both allophane and ferrihydrite will react with oxyanions, such as phosphate, arsenate or borate, and remove them from solution. Other anions such as fluoride also react with aluminium sites on the mineral surface. At NZ Soil Bureau, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), New Zealand, techniques have been developed for granulating allophane to enable it to be used to remove pollutants from solution without dispersion into the liquid phase. This granulated allophane can be used to remove phosphate from sewage effluent or fluoride from tap water without having a sedimentation stage to remove the clay.

Benchmarks of mine equipment involved in the excavation process of coal mines would suggest that such equipment is not always operating at an optimum level. Dragline operations and truck/shovel operations rely on efficient use of their plant in order to maintain high mine throughput. The first process which affects the material to be excavated is the drilling and blasting process. Drilling and blasting delivers a fragmented material with a given disposition ready for excavation by mine equipment. As mine operators demand more productivity from their major excavating equipment, many sites are considering the use of productivity monitors to measure their outputs. Some of these productivity improvements will be directly related to the drilling and blasting process, so that as the monitoring systems improve, the opportunities to evaluate all drilling and blasting variables will also improve. This paper reviews current and newer methods for monitoring equipment productivity in mines. These include simple time and motion studies obtained by either manual timing of processes or by automated data collection equipment being adopted by the industry. Case studies for truck/shovel operations are discussed and the productivity improvements are compared with typical industry standards. These improvements relate specifically to parts of the load, haul and dump cycle and the potential for significant improvements are identified. Particular opportunities for drilling and blasting improvements are also presented.

J. M. Huber Corporation's Quincey Mine. an underground limestone mine located near Quincy. Illinois, has operated successfully and safely for many years utilizing roof bolts on a very limited basis. Over the years, the mine had experienced several rool falls that did not result in injury to personnel. Nearly all of the roof falls were limited to the first 2 feet of the massive limestone roof. Investigation of the falls indicated the major contributing factor to these roof falls was a randomly occuring thin. horizontal clay layer in the immediate roof. Over time, separation would occur at the clay layer. causing the root to sag. and eventually causing the root to fail. J. M. Huber Corporation contracted with NSA Engineering. Inc. to assist in a study to determine the effectiveness of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR ) for locating these potential root fall areas so that mitigating action could he taken prior to roof failure. Multiple tests were conducted in areas of known roof conditions. GPR accurately predicted the existence or absence of root separation up to 1.5 meters into the immediate roof for 100 % of the known lest site conditions. As a consequence of this successful studs, J. M. Huber Corporation has used GPR to evaluate roof conditions at both its Quince and Marble Hill Mines.

APPENDIX B - DEVELOPMENT OF FOAM-CONCRETE SLURRY MINE SEALANT 1. Introduction This appendix describes the results of an experimental development and laboratory evaluation of foam-concrete as a rapid setting, lightweight, self-supporting mine sealant material. Foam concrete, otherwise known as Aerated Concrete, is a form of lightweight concrete whose structure consists of air bubbles held together by a hardened cement mortar. Its principal applications are found in roofing, insulation, shock absorbing, and backfill. The air bubbles in foam concrete are formed either by chemical reaction in the wet, placed mortar, or by introducing a stable foam into the mortar during mixing. The mortar is usually a cement slurry with fine sand or fly ash as filler. Our attention focused on preformed foam concrete, since this is most adaptable to field applications. Equipment is available,* which simultaneously mixes and pumps a slurry of foam concrete. Such a slurry can be produced at a rate of up to 50 yards/hr and has been pumped in a 2-inch-diameter hose 1000-feet horizontally and 250 feet vertically up without significant bubble deterioration. AND INTRODUCTION The Lochiel coal deposit, a large Tertiary soft brown coal deposit in the mid north of South Australia, is currently being investigated by the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) as a potential source of fuel for a base load power station. Feasibility studies indicated that the proposed dragline method of overburden removal was viable but economically sensitive to both highwail and dump batter angles. The unusual properties of the unconsolidated overburden sediments and the groundwater regime posed a number of intimately related hydrogeological and geotechnical questions which were addressed before and during the excavation of a trial pit. All strata at Lochiel are of soil strength, and artesian aquifers occur above and below the coal. From the initial evaluation of the deposit a number of hydrogeological questions were defined. These related to the rate at which the pore pressure in the silts is reduced by dewatering, the extent of the reduction in pore pressure due to prestripping, and the feasibility of dewatering and depressurising carbonaceous silty sand sequences. The site of the trial pit was selected to answer these and other questions from the basis of a detailed geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical understanding. The trial pit dewatering system simulated a full scale mine dewatering system and included ten pumped wells, twenty drainage wells, and nearly 400 monitoring instruments. It operated from September 1986 to June 1987. The excavation was carried out between February and May 1987.

INTRODUCTION The report of the workshop on Alternate Energy Strategies estimated that the world's reserve of uranium oxide is about 700,000 tonnes. In order to extract these reserves, it is estimated that between 100 and 200 million tonnes of solid waste and of the order of 1 billion cubic meters of liquid waste will be generated. In addition, radium within tailing will continue to generate radon gas as it decays for many years after closure. Hence, the handling, storage and possible use of uranium mine waste is a matter which deserves serious consideration and planning. Since the properties of the waste will largely dictate the method of handling and storage or use of the waste, the properties of the waste should be determined, to the degree possible, prior to the design and subsequent operation of the mine. Uranium mine waste has both solid and fluid constituents. The solids include soil and rock removed during site preparation, similar material removed during development of the mine and uranium tailing generated by the mill. Soils can be stockpiled for reuse during reclamation or used as earth materials for construction of fills, roads, dams and soil linings. Rock can be stockpiled, used as mine backfill or can be used for earth construction in fills, roads and dams. The tailing is usually placed in a tailing storage area. The fluid constituents are both liquid and gaseous. The liquid waste is generally composed of the mill water; however, additional waste water can be generated by dewatering processes and diversion of surface runoff. The gaseous constituent of the uranium mine waste is radon generated by the radioactive decay of radium in the ore tailing. DEFINITION OF PROPERTIES The following presents a brief definition of some of the more important properties discussed later. The definitions are not intended to be comprehensive, but are useful as a basis for understanding.

"Bubble-mineral complexes could be formatted by an attaching of hydrophobic particles to the surface of air bubbles or by an evolution of bubbles from solution onto hydrophobic surfaces. Measurements of contact angles, detachment forces (DF), induction times (IT), evolution pressures (EP) and flotation recoveries (FR) for the studying of minerals wettability at various pH and electrochemical potentials were used. An analysis of the obtained IT results show that a process of bubble attachment to a mineral surface is a rather slow one and it will scarcely be enough for bubble-mineral complex formation under the conditions of real flotation.The ranges of adhesion potentials obtained by DF measurements, Figure 1, correlate with the data of floatability-potential for pyrite. The ranges of adhesion potentials obtained by DF measurements for galena (-1 ÷0.2V) and chalcocite (-0.5÷1.2V) correlate with the potential ranges of floatability for galena (<0.2V) and chalcocite (>-0.4V). An increase of the DF and the cathodic limit of the adhesion potential with increasing length of the hydrocarbon chain were observed. EP-pH curves for sulfides are a mirror-like to the DF-pH curves, Figure 2. Structure of solid-liquid and liquid-gas borders has a determinative importance for formation of bubble-mineral complexes and subsequently flotation results. Under vacuum on the mineral surface there are produced micro bubbles and preferably they will be appeared on the hydrophobic sites. Water structure breaks near a hydrophobic surface facilitate water mass destruction and formation of gaseous phase embryos under decompression in the impeller zone. It simultaneously reduces a probability of produced micro bubbles dissolution as a result of pressure increasing owing to constant fluctuation of liquid densities into impeller zone. Comparison of Taggart’s evaluation of the suction behind blades of the impeller of an agitation-froth machine and ABEP data on galena, Figure, shows that gas evolution will be observed in the range of 1300-2700 revolutions of impeller per minute for hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces successively."

INTRODUCTION Every day mine management and mining personnel face the threat of a possible mine disaster or fire. Their ability to deal with such a situation safely and effectively depends on the level of emergency preparation developed and maintained. After conducting numerous informal evaluations or audits at different mine sites throughout West Virginia (as well as other states), the authors concluded that many mining operations are not prepared to handle a fire situation. The results of the audits indicate that while most mines are in compliance with federal and state legal regulations regarding levels of emergency equipment, water systems and training sessions, these levels - particularly in the area of fire training - are probably not sufficient to enable the mine employees to effectively combat a fire in its early stage. This paper will present the authors&apos; recommendations for designing and maintaining an efficient mine emergency preparedness Program and an overview of the curriculum of the mine fire training Program currently being conducted. MINE EMERGENCY FXEPAREDNESS PROGRAM The Mine Emergency Preparedness Pro- gram (MEPP) is a management tool developed by the Mining Extension Service at West Virginia University and was designed to assist company personnel in effectively managing a mine emergency operation. The program goes beyond the traditional and required training of mine rescue teams by offering a complete emergency operations package. Included in MEPP are suggested approaches for training and organizing all personnel, ideas for developing plans of action concerning transportation, security and communications. The MEPP program may also be used as to assess present readiness levels. While the MEPP program is designed to address all types of emergency operations, the authors are convinced that emergencies involving mine fires are the ones of greatest concern and so are concentrating their efforts in that direction. Incidents where fires are involved seem to be increasing in frequency and are extremely costly to control if allowed to go beyond the incipient stages. With a proper emergency preparedness program in place and properly trained and equipped fire brigades, the authors feel that it is possible
