The Code for Environmental Management of Marine Mining (the Code) was adopted in 2001 by the International Marine Minerals Society (IMMS) following extensive and wide-ranging consultation, and updated in 2002. The Code provides a framework and benchmarks for development and implementation of an environmental program for a marine exploration or extraction site by marine mining companies, and for stakeholders in governments, NGOs and communities in evaluating actual and proposed applications of environmental programs at marine mining sites. The Code provides for its review by IMMS after five years, with a focus toward possible modifications based on experience with its implementation and in light of developments in the field of marine mining and associated environmental practices, in consultation with the marine mining industry and with other stakeholders at marine mining operations. As the review of the Code is now due, to begin the process, this paper will present an analysis of the Code and initial suggestions for its modification. Although a regulation is in force that all water used underground shall be free of bacterial contamination, in practice it is often very difficult to accomplish this. The standard method of disinfection m South African mines IS treatment with calcium hypochlorite, although liquid sodium hypochlorite is used at a few sites. Primarily because the process depends on human control for the addition of the hypochlorite and the regulation of its now, it is frequently found difficult to disinfect mine water adequately and continuously. In many marine environments, chlorine generated by the electrolysis of seawater in its passage through an electric cell is used for disinfection. The generation procedure is continuous and needs no human control except for occasional checking of the equipment. This paper describes the successful implementation of the process, suitably .modified, .at four underground sites. After severe scaling problems had been overcome, a procedure resulted that chlorinates considerably more effectively than the previous system (dosing with calcium hypochlorite), and that has a lower amortized operating cost.

Vertical cutoff, or barrier, walls are an integral part of environmental site remediation efforts. Vertical barriers are commonly deployed to limit the influx of clean ground water and/or to control the off-site migration of contaminated groundwater. The level of detailed design consideration devoted to the vertical cutoff wall component varies widely from project to project and generally decreases with decreasing size and complexity. For those projects receiving minimal design effort, conservative design decisions can lead to unnecessary costs or unanticipated conflicts between the various design considerations. In this paper, the authors discuss several important design and construction aspects of vertical cutoff walls requiring particularly careful consideration during the design phase of the project. These design and construction considerations include the need for and extent of excavation for a key, project target hydraulic conductivity, the use of statistical allowances in the specifications, filter press testing, sand content of in-trench slurry, cleaning of the backfill slope, measurement of stress and strain, the additional of slag in cement-bentonite cutoff walls, and longevity of cutoff walls.

Notes on the composition of pre- European copper and copper-alloy artefacts from the Transvaal by H. M. Friede. Ph.D. (Visitor) Seven copper artefacts (five ingots and two ornaments) found at prehistoric sites in the Transvaal were submitted to analysis. All the artefacts showed a high copper content and a relatively Iow level of impurities. A little-known ingot type from the Limpopo Valley ('nail' ingot) is described, and its analysis is given. The analysis of two copper ornaments that come from sites dated to the 5th Century AD. and the 11th Century AD. showed the constancy of the composition of copper articles over long periods. The well-known 'Blaauwberg Ingot' was re-analysed, and the results showed that this ingot cannot be regarded as a true bronze. Analytical values for the composition of three brass artefacts from Bambandyanalo (Mapungubwe), Northern Transvaal, are given. Some aspects of pre-European bronze manufacture and brass smelting, and of early metal trade from the East Coast into the interior of South Africa, are discussed.

An upgrading and straightening of a highway included building a bridge across a small river. A routine site investigation was initiated to determine the conditions for designing the foundation of the bridge. The proposed bridge was a two-lane highway bridge in one span with a total length of 30 m (100 ft), as indicated in Fig. 1. It was to be placed about 20 m (66 ft) upstreams of the bridge for the existing highway. The site investigation included one boring at each abutment with soil sampling and in-situ vane testing and placed about halfway up the slope from the small river at ground surface elevation + 54 m. Within the investigated maximum depth of 40 m (130 ft), the soils at both borehole locations consisted of a thin clay crust over a thick deposit of soft sensitive clay with a natural water content of about 70 % and a liquid limit of about 60. The undrained shear strength below the crust was about 20 KPa (400 psf) and increased slightly with depth. The sensitivity was high, about 40.

The ability to make a good profit in the mining industry is becoming more and more difficult. Typically, grades are lower, sites are more remote, and environmental restrictions are getting tighter than ever before. While the price of the materials P.roduced, such as gold and silver, have stayed flat or declined, the external costs (goods and services) have increased. Increasingly difficult environmental restrictions have increased the lime and costs of develoJ?in9 new deposits, while often placing restrictions on a mme s production rate. Environmental costs for mine closure and site reclamation also make it very difficult to show a long-term profit while mining. Typically, the answer to this cost/price squeeze has been technological innovation. The whole concept of heap leaching low-grade gold ore is one innovation that provided some very goocf profits to the mining companies; but, today, those profits are being eroded by the continuing cost/ price squeeze. INTRODUCTION Geophysical applications to engineering projects are usually considered for reconnaissance exploration, and for some preliminary design phases. Recent experience indicates a growing need and a greater number of requests for measurements during construction. This is particularly true where seismic velocity values are related to strength properties of rock. Typical project objectives during construction are: dike and tunnel realignments required by surprise conditions encountered during foundation preparation; checks on grouting effectiveness which require velocity measurements before and after grouting; and dynamic moduli measurements along the walls of tunnels and deep excavations. This paper considers one of the on-site seismic applications that is rather simple and straightforward, and yet has few references in the literature. The specific objective is the measurement of seismic velocities (both "P" waves and "S" waves) for determining the thicknesses and dynamic moduli values of loosened zones of tunnel wall rock. The economic future of the Palmer Goldfield lies with both the gold mining and the tourist industries. An equitable solution to the competition between the two involves putting a dollar value on the historical evidence there for our Australian heritage.On 23 October 1986 the Queensland Government gazetted the Palmer River Reserves R16 of 16 200 hectares, in recognition of the competing land uses emerging in the region. The intention is that historically significant gold mining sites and relics will be preserved in situ with provision for continued gold exploration and mining.This paper explores and explains the administrative process of achieving a set of Management Guidelines for Rl6 within the Queensland political milieu. The result of that process is the achievement of some of the highest preservation standards in Australia, prohibiting surface disturbance of defined Category 1 sites, and no mining proposal has yet been refused approval.The Palmer Goldfield R16 experience is a major step in achieving a co-ordinated approach to both current mining and preservation of Queensland's mining heritage.

In order to continue improving the quality of telecommunication services to meet the expectations of the people and to increase reliability in the case of emergency such as disasters, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation (NTT) is now constructing cable tunnels which connect main urban telephone offices. However, almost all the large cities in Japan are built in river deltas, so that their chief underground features are low strength fluvial deposit and a high ground water level. In this saturated soft ground, the ground surface at an installation site has occasionally subsided through deep excavations for cable tunneling construction. As these settlements have sometimes caused accidents, especially in densely populated large cities, NTT has made much effort to avoid such accidents. These accidents have occured mainly in flexible sheeting due to its inward movement. Therefore, after the investigation into forecast method of sheeting deflection with accuracy, NTT has reserched a system which forecasts ground surface settlements. This paper describes an outline of the ground settlement forecast system and practical example on the site.

Qualitative measurement of respirable dust in metal mines is limited and an example of this is demonstrated at Northparkes Mine, where operational experience was sought for measuring dust standards and identifying exposure limits. However, relying on operational experience has limited value due to variation in observations from person to person and is based on visible dust (which is larger in size than respirable dust). However, with sophisticated dust measuring equipment, like the real-time aerosol monitor, dust concentrations can be accurately measured and recorded concisely. Research conducted as part of a collaborative agreement on behalf of Northparkes to launch an occupational dust monitoring program was implemented on the mine site. To form the basis of this research, it was hypothesised that no proper dust measuring testing at the mine site had been adequately identified. In addition, existing occupational hygiene monitoring programs did not adequately quantify employee exposures to these hazards. This project will outline the results of an occupational dust monitoring program, hence greatly improving the capacity to quantify the health risks posed to employees.

This paper reports on the field results of using electronic detonators to improve blast outcomes. OricaÆs electronic detonator, the i-konTM Digital Energy Control System, allows exact and precise timing in 1 ms increments from 0 to 15 000 ms. This gives the blast engineer and shotfirer the ability to fire a blast using any possible desired sequence. In the three years that have followed the release of the i-konTM System, Orica has been re-exploring ways of initiating blasts using the abilities of electronic detonators to improve fragmentation, diggability and crusher throughput. This study began with revisiting fundamental blast theory, lead to generation of new state of the art computer fragmentation modelling and ended with many iterative field trials of i-konTM blasts across a wide selection of mining methods and rock types. At three sites a detailed measurement process was undertaken to compare the results of pyrotechnic blasts with i-konTM blasts. This paper will detail the significant improvements in fragmentation, diggability and crusher throughput that was found at these sites.

Health risk underlies all of today's environmental regulations. Mine Manager's are no strangers to risk, but risk in the context of mine management is not the same as risk in the context of environmental regulation. One of the risks facing the mine manager is whether the mining operations meet environmental compliance standards. These standards are defined in terms of the frequency of occurrence of adverse health effects in an exposed population (i.e., health risk). Demonstration of compliance necessarily involves mathematical modelling and selection of values for input variables. What is not immediately apparent is that the method of estimating the human health risk has a significant influence on remedy selection and the amount of money spent at suspected contaminated sites. Using a hypothetical, mining-related example, this paper illustrates the disassociation between the current deterministic approach to health risk assessment and cost-effective decision making. This paper also illustrates how the probabilistic approach to health risk assessment provides a more realistic characterization of health risk and enables mine managers to identify cost-effective remedial strategies for the site.

This study deals with carrier flotation of cerium dioxide, a surrogate of plutonium oxide, which is the major contaminant at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of using carrier flotation for remediation of the site. In this study, a - 200-mesh fraction of pure cerium dioxide was used. Oleic acid was used as the collector, while calcium carbonate was used as the carrier. Mechanical-cell tests were conducted to float the surrogate from a mixture containing uncontaminated NTS soil, both in the absence and presence of the carrier. It was found that the addition of the carrier drastically enhanced the flotation recovery of cerium dioxide. The flotation recovery of the surrogate increased from 34% to 65% by adding only 0.5% calcium carbonate (-150 mesh). The recovery further increased to 95% by adding 10% calcium carbonate. The flotation method utilizing a carrier of calcium carbonate seems to have a high potential for the remediation of the soil contaminated with radionuclides at the NTS.

The rock mass to be excavated is classified using data obtained from the initial site investigation, and the design of excavation and support is then made based on the rock class. Rock classification provides an empirical design with guidelines for tunnel support compatible with rock mass quality and the method of excavation. Although most clients provide standard patterns corresponding to each rock class, the patterns of drilling and blasting have only been used in estimating the excavation cost and not used in the construction stage. The purpose of the study presented in this paper is to establish a standard blast pattern to yield optimum blasting performance along with an attempt to reduce a difference between design and construction. A series of test blasts were carried out at two tunneling sites of Central Inland Highway crossing the country. Long hole blasting was tested in rock mass whose RMR value is over 60. The blasting results were evaluated by measuring degree of fragmentation, advance rate, muckpile distribution, overbreak, etc. Based on the results of test blast, several patterns were proposed for a twolane highway tunnel.

Oyu Tolgoi is a large Cu-Au porphyry deposit in the south Gobi desert, Mongolia. The first of several deep, large-diameter, concrete-lined shafts, Shaft 1, is nearing completion. It will have a finished depth of 1380 m at a diameter of 6.7 m. These shafts will provide access to and hoisting capacity for block caving of deep underground ore. Geotechnical site investigations, and associated predictions of stability and ground support requirements, are compared against actual construction performance. Routine mapping is essential, along with checks against predictions and informing the contractor of ground conditions and variances.Advance rates are compared against predicted rock mass quality. A reasonable correlation exists between Qwall and advance rate. Overbreak and concrete liner thickness is related to the blockiness quotient, RQD/Jn.A ætool-bagÆ of just a few support elements (chain-link mesh, fibrecrete and 2.4 m long friction anchors and resin grouted re-bar bolts) was able to cope with the ground conditions encountered. QA/QC procedures are essential from the factory, through site storage to installation.

Mining Engineering Degree programs have traditionally had a practical emphasis and have been highly vocational in nature. However, over the years, there has been an increasing attention to the more scientific aspects of the discipline. More recently, the professional institutions, the industry and the community at large have placed increasing emphasis on the broader aspects of the professions: management, finance, humanity, environment and social issues. Notwithstanding this, there has been a continuing emphasis on the practicalities, and most Mining Engineering programs are still strongly vocational in nature. But employers of new graduates complain about the graduatesÆ lack of practicality and readiness for employment æat the sharp endÆ on the mine site.This paper briefly describes some of the more recent developments in the Mining Engineering Degree program at the University of Queensland that attempt to address the problem. Particular attention is paid to alternative learning programs, including applications of virtual reality, practical experience at the University Experimental Mine (UQEM), and the Undergraduate Site Learning Program (USLP).

The Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) is the largest international geoscience project in the world, and the state-of-the-art drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, is permanently at sea. Each year there are six scientific cruises (legs) which each last approximately two months. These legs are designed by geoscientists from the nineteen countries that subscribe to ODP. Australia and Canada presently share ODP membership under the banner of the AUSCAN Consortium. The benefits of Australia's involvement in ODP include internationalisation of Australian geoscience, advanced graduate training, and unique scientific investigations of the ocean floors in the Australasian region. In addition, visits to Australian ports by the ODP drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, contribute up to $2 million per visit to the local economy. Amongst the many other aspects of ten years of scientific drilling, ODP has significantly contributed to our understanding of hydrothermal processes on the seafloor. To date, three hydrothermal sites have been drilled to date by the ODP, Snakepit (MAR), Middle Valley (Juan de Fuca Ridge) and TAG (MAR). Two more hydrothermal sites are scheduled for 1996.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s(NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), RAG Pennsylvania and Strata Control Technologies of Australia have collaborated to conduct an extensive study of roof bolt strata interaction at the Emerald mine in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The primary goal of the project was to obtain detailed data on the interaction between the mine roof and the support elements for use in modeling studies. The study site was a longwall tailgate subjected to high horizontal stress. Three arrays of instruments were installed at the site, one in the tail-gate entry and two in an adjacent crosscut. Pumpable concrete cribs were present in the tailgate array, and cable bolts were installed in one of the crosscut arrays. The instruments included mechanical and sonic extensometers for measuring roof movement, instrumented roof bolts, and three-dimensional roof stress cells. The study was ultimately successful in determining the magnitude of the horizontal stress concentration, the height of roof failure and the roof failure sequence, and the loading history of the primary roof supports.

The City of Manchester is hosting the 2002 Commonwealth Games. A world class Stadium with a 38,000 capacity was commissioned for a site located close to the City Centre. The Stadium location is in an area that was derelict and in need of regeneration and it is envisaged that the Stadium will be the spur for this. The industrial and residential history of the site has left a legacy of buried foundations together with chemically contaminated soils. This Made Ground deposit overlies Glacial Deposits which in turn overlie bedrocks of the Central Manchester Coalfield. Coal mining has taken place from at least 1761 leaving several worked seams and shafts. In order to support the stadium, 1159 conventional augured piles of 600 to 1200mm diameters were used. This paper will deal primarily with the piling operations and testing, but will also discuss the coal seam treatment with respect to piling. A substantial trial pile test programme was carried out together with 11 static load tests on contract piles. The results of the pile tests will be discussed and conclusions drawn.

This paper describes a system for providing structural, support in underground mines, employing water ice for pillars. packwalls and brattices. It consists of a refrigeration brine chiller, brine circulation system, and disposable plastic containers. The system provides for the timely freezing of uniform ice pillars, and for ice maintainance and/or melting on demand. Unique, useful ice properties include: expansion upon freezing, resilience to dynamic loads, and plasticity. Ice will not dilute or contaminate coal or ore. Economic advantages include: 1) lower labor and material costs (water can be piped to the ice pillar site through mine-water, spray-water, or drill-water lines); 2) replacement or supplementation of timber. concrete or other roof support equipment; and 3) potential use of ice brattices as ventillation control; and 4) conversion of ice bratices to ice pillars upon retreat. See Figure . A safety advantage for personnel and equipment is that ice pillars can be placed in hazardous sites, by remote control, if neccessary, without human entry. All filling, freezing and melting operations can be controlled from a safe distance.
