The traditional concept of scaled-distance modelling for predicting blast induced ground vibration holds many drawbacks, not least of which is the major effect data scatter imparts on confidence determination. An investigation by the Department of Mining and Mineral Engineering, The University of Leeds, England has resulted in the development of simple but effective method of improving prediction capacity through the reduction of effective error by incorporating individual location response into a scaled-distance model. The work is the product of an l&month blast-monitoring campaign at a limestone quarry situated in North Yorkshire, England. The data, when presented in the form of a scaled-distance model, indicates a typical scenario where a good overall correlation becomes marred by the extent of data scatter. Examination of the individual monitoring locations however indicates that the response of the individual location is an important factor in the explanation of the large residuals. The novel approach thathas been developed incorporates a series of locational site factors which when incorporated into a scaled distance model reduces the effective error and therefore improves prediction capacity. The approach is based on using a standard computer package “spread sheet” on the understanding that these are commonly available on all quarry or home computers. This approach has been validated by comparison with a more rigorous statistics method.

A specialized Pore-Fluid Array sampler (PFA) was designed to collect and store pore-fluids to monitor temporal changes of ions and gases in gas hydrate bearing sediments. We tested the hypothesis that pore-fluid chemistry records hydrate formation or decomposition events and reflects local seismic activity. The PFA is a seafloor probe that consists of an interchangeable instrument package that houses OsmoSamplers, long-term pore-fluid samplers; a specialized low-dead volume fluid coupler; and eight sample ports along a 10-meter sediment probe shaft. The PFA was deployed at Mississippi Canyon 118, a Gulf of Mexico hydrate site. A 160-day record was acquired from the overlying water (OLW) and 1.3 meters below seafloor (mbsf). Fluids were measured for dissolved chloride, sulfate, and methane concentrations and dissolved inorganic carbon and methane stable carbon and deuterium isotope ratios. Chloride and sulfate did not change significantly over time, suggesting the absence of gas hydrate formation or decomposition events. Over the temporal record, methane concentrations averaged 4 mM at 1.3 mbsf and was thermogenic in origin (d13C-CH4 = -32.4±3.4?). The timing of an anomalous 14 mM methane spike coincided with a nearby earthquake (Mw=5.8), consistent with the hypothesis that pore-fluid chemistry reflects seismic events. AustraliaÆs current interest in renewable energy is based on a desire to reduce the countryÆs greenhouse gas emissions. Wood from sustainable sources offers a unique opportunity to combine greenhouse gas benefits with other significant environmental and social benefits, including salinity mitigation, carbon sequestration, soil replenishment and rural industry. The challenge is to make renewable energy from wood in a cost competitive manner, so that this broad range of benefits may be best realised. Bioenergy and carbon products are of great interest as new, commercial forestry products that can drive large-scale environmental tree planting:In Western Australia, Enecon has worked with Western Power Corporation to build the first full-scale plant for integrated processing of mallee eucalypts, to produce activated carbon, renewable power and eucalyptus oil. It is intended that this plant is the first of a number of such plants to help catalyse environmental tree planting in Western Australia. New technologies being developed overseas may provide competitive bioenergy in areas where traditional markets for wood do not exist. For example, pyrolysis converts wood into a bio-oil that may be transported to remote sites for power generation in gas turbines. Pyrolysis also produces wood char. Pyrolysis and wood-to-ethanol technologies, coupled with short rotation coppicing trees, offer the long-term prospect of large-scale production of renewable fuels around the country.

It is often said in business that if you don't have a customer you don't have a business. The same rule applies to project evaluation; if you don't have customers you really don't have a viable project. It is therefore essential that in the early stages of project evaluation the following fundamental questions are addressed: ? What products will this project produce? ? Who are the potential customers? ? What are the customers' requirements with respect to grade and impurities? ? Do they have adequate capacity to take the production from the proposed project? ? Will the products introduce adverse effects in the customer's process circuits? ? Will additional waste streams requiring disposal be produced? In the past the attitude has been along the lines of the customer will take whatever we produce at the mine site. Times have now changed with customers now operating under much tighter environmental regulation with waste disposal becoming increasingly difficult. It would therefore be prudent that the principles of product stewardship be used as a tool in project evaluation. This paper will provide a general discussion on customer requirements and provide detail on case studies of the impact of mine products on smelter process circuits. It will provide examples where there were synergies between the mine product and the smelter circuit and where the mine product had adverse impacts on smelter performance.

The gold mine sector is presently facing low gold prices as well as technological challenges. Its competitiveness and survival will depend on new mining methods and equipment to improve ore extraction. In 1999, Natural Resources Canada has invested new funds over a period of three years at CANMET’s Experimental Mine to establish the Narrow-Vein Mining Project. A team of engineers and researchers specialized in mining, mechanics and electronics engineering are working to meet the critical need of ore-extraction technology. CANMET’s programme in mechanization and automation for narrow-vein mining had, prior to 1999, realised several important achievements, many in co-operation with a consortium of mining companies(Soredem). The investment of new funds in this area will contribute to develop technologies to improve the productivity, as well as health and safety conditions of the narrow-vein mining industry. Several important impacts of this project will be monitored. In particular, a database of methods and equipment used in narrow-vein mining is being developed. A key thrust is to identify operators’ needs with respect to the development and automation of mining methods and equipment. Based on those needs, research and development projects will be created. The paper will present the objectives of the narrow-vein mining project and some of the results, including the web site developed to present the results of the project.

Hong Kong continues to display a remarkable enthusiasm for undertaking ambitious tunnelling schemes despite apparent recessions in the Asian economy. This paper provides an outline of tunnel projects currently under construction, those recently tendered and a glimpse of the extent of forthcoming projects which, according to Government sources, carry a price tag of HK$ 200B. Committed works will cost about HK$ 15B and involve a variety of TBM and drill and blast tunnels. These include the recently tendered works for KCRCÆs West Rail and MTRCÆs Tseung Kwan O railway extension, together with five no retendered TBM drives for the Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme (SSDS) following forfeiture of the works by the Campenon Bernard-Maeda JV in mid-1997. The JV claimed unreasonable specifications leading to unacceptable levels of water inflow and dangerous working conditions. Key technical issues that are now arising in Hong Kong are:the general use of design and build contracts for bored tunnel contracts;a trend to accept TBM options for relatively short drives in urban areas;the use of æfixed-priceÆ contracts which in the current competitive market, can encourage tenderers to take contractors to take very high risks; andthe difficulty of predicting and managing water inflows in rock tunnels.This paper also includes a new empirical method of predicting water inflows in rock tunnels, and makes recommendations for managing these on-site.

INTRODUCTION Geotechnical engineers play a major role in tunnel design primarily because tunnels are constructed entirely within the ground. In general, this role can be divided into two major tasks: subsurface investigations and project design. Under subsurface investigations, it is necessary for the geotechnical engineer to accurately describe the ground in which the project will be built. Under project design, it is necessary for the geotechnical engineer to work together with other members of the design team to make certain that the tunnel fulfills its intended purpose at least cost. Given in the paper are the authors' opinions about what constitutes an adequate scope of services for these two tasks on a tunneling project. SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATIONS o Background Study All subsurface exploration programs for tunnels begin with a thorough investigation of background information about the proposed site. Such background information includes geologic, reports topographic maps, aerial photography, and case history reports of other nearby tunnels. Once completed, it is necessary to study the background information so that the proper scope and magnitude of subsurface exploration work is performed in a manner that provides maximum input to a knowledge of those intact and rock mass properties that are important for an understanding of the entire ground mass. In 1992 environmental audits were carried out at seven coal mines operated by Oakbridge Limited in the Hunter Valley and Lithgow areas of NSW. The audit reports recommended a course of action designed to improve the environmental management system already in operation at the mines. This program started with training in environmental awareness for the Board of Directors, and the development and authorisation of an environmental policy. On-going programs at each mine were expanded to include environmental awareness training for all 2000 employees at the mines, and the development of a 20-module environmental training program which included air, water, soil and noise management, oil and chemical handling, sampling and monitoring, rehabilitation techniques and many more. Environmental incident reporting was introduced, and a system of reporting from the coal face through individual mine site environmental committees, to a Corporate Environmental Committee and up to the Board Environmental Committee became an effective part of a due diligence program. The Board resolved to undertake external independent environmental audits every two years, with internal reviews in the alternate years. An Environmental Management Group was formed, consisting of four internal environmental personnel and Oakbridge's appointed environmental consultant, to effectively resolve many of the environmental issues facing the Group. Magnesium recycling has been used to recover both new scrap and old scrap. It was used extensively in Germany during WWII to expand the magnesium supply. There were a large number of magnesium recyclers in the US who got their start smelting old scrap, old airplanes and old waste dumps from the WWII build up. As the world magnesium industry dwindled, only a few companies were left that did magnesium recycling as a primary business. The sand foundries tended to recycle of their production scrap in their melting furnaces. Even the original die casters tended to put scrap directly back into melting furnaces at the die casting machines. As high purity alloys were developed and the use of die castings in automotive work increased, the tendency was to let the magnesium recyclers convert the scrap back to high quality ingot. Automotive use has grown because of the low density of magnesium. This property is the one of the biggest problems to overcome in shipping scrap. Gates and runners from die casting are very irregular shapes and it is very hard to load a truck with enough material to get a low shipping cost per pound. Recent new equipment companies have developed magnesium equipment that is specifically designed to recycle, refine and cast secondary magnesium metal. These melt cells are supplied as integrated units to magnesium casting sites. The cost and effectiveness of this approach will be discussed.

Six industry trends will have significant effect on the way mining equipment is designed and supported in the years ahead: 1. MINING IS MIGRATING TO LESSER DEVELOPED PARTS OF THE WORLD The global recession of the early 1980's drove down commodity prices and intensified cost competition. This caused a fairly dramatic trend in mining away from higher cost operations in developed countries to richer, lower cost deposits in developing countries. Miners operating in lesser developed parts of the world will place higher value on rugged, durable designs that can live in more difficult and sometimes abusive conditions. They need engines and power train systems that are more tolerant of a wide variation in fuel quality and oil specifications. They'll require machines that are simpler to operate, simpler to maintain, simpler to troubleshoot and simpler to repair. And they'll require creative means of support in getting technical information, parts and components to remote operational sites. Mining equipment in the future will be more durable and simple than it is today, and product support will grow in importance as purchasing criterion. 2. THE MINING INDUSTRY IS CONSOLIDATING An intense amount of corporate acquisition and industry consolidation activity is occurring, to the point that today just 50 mining companies account for 55% of the western world non-fuel mineral production. Consolidation will continue, leading in the future to an industry structure weighted heavily toward a few key global mining houses.

The objective of this U.S. Bureau of Mines hydrologic-subsidence investigation was to evaluate the effects of longwall mining on the local ground water regime through field monitoring and numerical modeling. Field data were obtained from multiple-position borehole extensometers (MPBX's) that were used to measure subsurface displacements. Survey monuments were installed to measure mining-induced surface deformations. Numerous drawdown and recovery tests were performed to characterize hydrologic properties of the overburden strata. Coreholes were drilled above the study area to determine lithologic and strength characteristics of the overburden strata using the rock samples collected. Electronic recorders were installed on all monitoring wells to continuously monitor ground water levels in coordination with mining of the longwall panels. A combined finite element model of the deformation of overlying strata, and it's influence on ground water flow was used to define the change in local and regional water budgets. The predicted effects of the postmining ground water system determined by the model correlated well with field data collected from the field site. Without an infiltration rate added to the model, a static decrease of 3.0 m (10 ft) in water level would occur due to mining of both longwall panels and if an infiltration rate was inputted in the model, no predicted long-term effects would occur to the ground water system.

To establish the design and the capacity of the Stanwell Magnesium Plant, Australian Magnesium Corporation Ltd (AMC) with Fluor Australia has modelled the operation of the magnesium plant using ARENA Simulation Modelling. The reliability model has been used to evaluate: surge capacities required between different sections of the plant; critical equipment requiring standby capacity; the number of trains required for different sections of the plant; and potential capital cost reduction options. The reliability model was established using the detailed Process Flow Diagrams, reliability information from literature and maintenance, operation and start-up experience from the Demonstration Plant. The model was run with different plant configurations to assist AMC in determining the most effective configuration to provide the production capacity at the lowest capital cost. The model was not only able to confirm the plant capacity to the independent technical expert but was able to minimise quantitative risk by minimising the quantities of hazardous materials on site. Fluor Australia provided the ARENA simulation expertise and has used this software for optimising new plant design and to establish improvements in operating plants. Reliability modelling is a normal feature of chemical plant design but is rarely used in the resource industry. The experience gained by AMC in the modelling system has indicated that metallurgical plant design can be improved by the application of reliability modelling.

Au/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by deposition-precipitation using NaOH (DPN) (~3 wt % Au) and urea (DPU) (~8 wt % Au), and calcined at various temperatures between 100 and 400 °C. They were characterized by UV-Visible, XANES, EXAFS and TEM. Their activity were tested in the reaction of CO oxidation at 5°C. After preparation, the gold species are in the oxidic state III. They begin to transform into metallic gold under air at ~100 °C for DPN and ~150 °C for DPU. At 200 °C, all the gold is metallic for the two preparation methods. The particle size increases from 1.5 to 3.5 nm with the calcination temperature. The catalytic activity for CO oxidation increases with the percentage of metallic gold, and it is maximum at 200°C for both types of samples. The activities (per mole of Au) are the same for the two types of catalysts. At higher temperatures, the catalytic activity drops. The decrease of activity is mainly due to a change of particle shape with the calcination temperature rather than to the increase of the particle size. At a calcination temperature of 200°C, the particles present small facets with rounded parts, and their outer surface contains a large proportion of low coordinated sites (steps and corners) while at high temperature of calcination, they are truncated octahedra with smooth facets.

Mina Maria is a high-grade, underground copper mine located in the Cananea district of Sonora, Mexico. The ore body is a massive sulfide breccia located in mountainous terrain. A major highway and an electric transmission line pass directly over the near-surface ore body. The mine is operated by Minera Maria SA de CV, a joint venture company that is 51 % owned by Empresas Frisco SA de CV and 49% by Cominco Resources International Ltd. Empresas Frisco is the operating partner. Production began in October 1990. The mining method used is undercut and fill. A continuous miner and a single-boom, hydraulic jumbo mine the ore. Backfill is a weakly cemented sand-gravel mixture that is pneumatically placed. The ore is treated by conventional crushing, milling and flotation. The Maria deposit is located about 40 km (25 miles) south of the Sonora-Arizona border and 11km (7 miles) northwest the city of Cananea and the Cananea Mine. The mine portal, at an elevation of 1780m (5840 ft), is on the east side of an important drainage divide. The mill site is situated about 800 m (2625 ft) northwest of the mine on the northwest side of the drainage divide where the drainage is more favorable. Its elevation is 1860 m (6100 ft) (Fig. 1).

Mining being a site specific activity, land becomes the prime requirement for starting, successful execution and closure of any mining project. Many important mining projects are not progressing satisfactorily just because land is not easily available or environmental/social issues are not addressed properly. This is especially true in the case of open-pit mining, which requires large areas for mining, dumping of waste and additional land for other mine facilities. Mine closure & post mining land use exercises, though funded generously, may not achieve their objectives owing to uneven land profile after mineral extraction is over. One of the prominent solutions to these issues is application of steep angle conveyors in large open pit mines that will result in more space for internal waste dumping and enhanced slope stability of the dump. Additionally, such applications will result in economic extraction of mineral in deep open pits. Land reclamation exercise may start concurrently during early years of mine development as mineral evacuation is limited to a specific part of the mine. Surface mining facilities can also be advanced along with the pit by using modular/portable structures. The paper presented here attempts to address specific land related issues by developing suitable schemes and plans that can be practically implemented in open pit mines using advanced technology i.e. steep angle conveyors.

1. INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has often taken a leading role in introducing innovative construction technologies to build its transit system. Most recently, Contract Section E-5a, which included Fort Totten Station and Tunnels was constructed utilizing the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) in soft ground. Along with the station and tunnels, two permanent shafts were also constructed in soft ground employing the NATM technique. This project is located within the District of Columbia on the Greenbelt Route. The subject of this paper is to discuss the unique method of construction of these two shafts, and explore the benefits of applying the NATM technique to the construction of deep shafts. The design of the shafts was performed jointly by Jenny Engineering Corporation of Springfield, New Jersey, and Mayreder Consult of Linz, Austria. The designers also provided construction support services and a resident NATM expert at the site during construction. The construction of the project started in April 1988 by a joint venture of Mergentime Corporation and H. T. Construction, a subsidiary of Hochtief Company from Germany. This $48.7 million construction project has been completed. 2. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS The two NATM shafts are located primarily in Cretaceous-age deposits that are over 100 million years old. Full-face blasting rounds have been used to excavate a 4.6-mdiameter shaft at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's Underground Research Laboratory near Pinawa, Manitoba. Both standard pyrotechnic delay detonators and the newly developed electronic delay detonators (EDD) were used on the project. The full-face blasting technique, employing 89-mm-diameter relief holes and 38-mm diameter blast holes, NG-based explosives, and the regular long period delay detonators, has been standard practice at the site, giving excellent wall control and fragmentation results. The comparison blasts using pyrotechnic detonators and EDDs were carried out to test the operational logistics, timing accuracy and blast results obtained with the latter. The long period pyrotechnic delays ranged from O to 18, with the nominal delay varying between 350 ms and 800 ms. The EDD blasts used the same number of periods, with the respective delay interval between successive periods set precisely at 190 ms and 210 ms for the two blasts. Based on a broad range of critically assessed parameters, the EDD blast results proved to be signficantly superior to those obtained with regular pyrotechnic detonators. The results have been analyzed in detail and the relative merits of the two delay systems have been determined. Alternative designs to derive maximum benefits from EDDs in shaft and tunnel blasts have also been suggested.

Recent experience over extensive areas of the Basin and Range Province has demonstrated the importance of the basin's (valley's) geology and geomorphology in locating large quantities of good-quality aggregate. First, a geologic map depicting basic geomorphic-geologic units in a valley is made in the office from aerial photography. Next, derivative maps are made from geologic maps and field-derived information such as parent rock type, source area and depositional environment, relationship to adjacent deposits, and Quaternary geologic history. Studying the derivative maps leads to selection of test sites for potential deposits of high-quality aggregates. Subsequent field studies provide more detailed information about geologic processes and samples for laboratory testing. Combining all information allows the characterization of aggregate potential of very large areas. Favorable areas can be further tested. This phased approach has proven to be cost effective. The methodology used in mapping and characterizing basinfill deposits is applicable over much of the western United States. Map units were developed by focusing on the predominate geomorphic process, grain size, cementation, and relative age. The resulting functional map units are of use to engineers and planners. This study led to many conclusions, including the fact that the best quality basinfill aggregates are found in selected alluvial fan deposits and Pleistocene lakeshore deposits. The best quality aggregates are derived from Paleozoic carbonate and quartzitic parent materials that can also provide high-quality crushed-rock aggregates.

This paper presents a technique for representing and analyzing random motions and hazardous events in a computer simulated three-dimensional workplace, providing machine designers and safety analysts with a new technique to evaluate ways to reduce operator-machine interaction hazards. Technical data in this paper is based upon a project striving to reduce workers' risks from being hit by underground mining machinery in a confined space. By simulating motions of an operator's random behavior and a machine's appendage, researchers can accurately identify hazards, and use that information to form safe designs for mining equipment appendage velocity. Validating the model provided improvements in the operator's optimal viewing area, work task- starting positions, and operator's motions for a more accurate random behavior. Preliminary simulation results provided (1) an interesting approach to research data gathering in that there was no need for live subjects and test sites and costs associated with experiments become insignificant and (2) that the model was versatile by showing it was capable of accurately mimicking the range collision forces versus speed, operators' size, and risk behaviors found in actual industrial situations and showed (I) that response time significantly affects the number of collisions experienced by the virtual subject and (2) that analysts must be discerning with the model and not read more From the databases than what the simulation model was designed to deliver. The Solution Mining review arrived too late to appear in the May issue. Solution mining, in its broadest definition, includes all forms of leaching where a lixiviant solution is brought into contact with a metalliferous or non-metallic ore and the resulting pregnant solution is processed for recovery of the valuable soluble material. Technologies such as dump leaching, heap leaching, stope washing and in situ lixiviant solution injection and recovery fit into this definition of solution mining. A publication entitled the US Gold Industry (Dobra and Thomas) reflects the major impact that solution mining techniques have had on precious metal recovery. In 1989 (the last year for which statistics are available), the United States passed Australia to become the third largest gold producing country in the world after South Africa and the Soviet Union. It is estimated that when the final figures are in for 1990, the US will probably pass the Soviet Union in gold output. If the state of Nevada is ranked as a separate country, it will rank fourth in the world in gold production for 1990. A good proportion of this increase in gold production over the past few years can be attributed to the application of solution mining technology to low-grade, precious-metal-bearing material. Solution mining techniques have also made inroads in copper production. Many operations located at former underground mine sites employ in situ leaching as an adjunct to conventional dump and heap leaching practices.
