Previous work done by the authors of this report indicates that hydraulically-placed backfill can be strengthened several fold by various placement methods. Sunshine mill tailings were tested by these placement methods and strength increases up to thirty times were achieved over the ordinary placement methods. A computer simulation study of the test stope in the Sunshine Mine showed that a high-modulus fill absorbs up to 27% of normal stresses versus 7% for "normal" fill while reducing maximum convergence 28% versus 8% for "normal" fill. Although high-modulus fill was not placed in the test stope during this contract, various instrumentation was purchased, designed and built to record necessary data in the stope. Stress gauges were placed in the pillars and recorded data corresponded quite closely with theoretical projections.

Over 1500 literature citations related to diesel exhaust sampling and analysis were obtained as a result of both computer and manual searches of nine data bases. Abstracts and hard copies of relevant citations were reviewed and those considered appropriate for evaluation were included in a bibliography. Based on the literature collected, available sampling and analysis methods for the following diesel exhaust contaminants were evaluated: CO, CO2, NO, NO2, Hydrocarbons, Particulates, PNA, S04, Oxygenates Emphasis was given to both laboratory and field methods for these species. Methods were evaluated on the basis of sensitivity, selectivity, accuracy and reliability and a selected list of preferred methods was developed for each compound/ class. The selected methods were additionally evaluated through communication with current investigators. Sampling and analysis methods for all compounds except CO and CO2 were observed to have some unreliability. Recommendations were made for future research to develop, improve, and validate methods.

"On July 26, 2000, the Canada Foundation for Innovation announced an award of $1.3 M dollars for The Centre for Environmental Research in Minerals, Metals and Materials, CERM3, at The University of British Columbia. Additional funding was also provided by the British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund ($1.3 M) and the UBC Stewart Blusson Fund ($0.7 M). Annual industrial grants and contracts are providing support funding for the on-going research projects. Corporate membership in CERM3 entitles each participant to a seat on the technical advisory committee (TAC) as well as access to the five laboratory facilities currently under construction. Both the federal and provincial governments will also participate in the TAC through NRCan-CANMET and the BC Ministry of Energy and Mines, respectively. CERM3’s mission is:• to develop innovative methods to deal with environmental problems created by mining activity;• to promote sustainable development as a hallmark of management decision-making; • to produce mining and processing engineers with the required environmental skills; and• to enhance the image of mining in society as a vibrant and necessary component of a modern economy and society which disturbs the environment for the benefit of mankind.CERM3 brings together a multi-disciplinary team of researchers from over 12 departments at The University of British Columbia (UBC) to work on mining-related environmental problems. These include: chemistry; soil sciences; chemical and biological engineering; earth and ocean sciences; microbiology; civil engineering; electrical engineering; metals and materials engineering; mechanical engineering; mining and mineral processing, the Westwater Research Centre; the Institute for Resources and the Environment; and the School of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene. The centre intends to interact with scientists from industry, governments and other universities across Canada and around the world. CERM3 aims to become Canada’s leading environmental research facility for the mining industry. This paper describes the evolution of CERM3 and its coordinated multi-disciplinary approach to mining and the environment. Some of CERM3’s research projects include:• developing new protocols for environmental analyses to provide consistent and reliable assays;• isolating a natural virus for Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and other bacteria responsible for acid rock drainage (ARD);• designing bio-remediation and adsorption techniques for mine effluents;• promoting and enhancing the use of hydrometallurgy to reduce environmental pollution;• examining new approaches to comminution to decrease energy consumption;• developing a magnetically levitated hoisting system to reduce the footprint of a mine operation;• building a state-of-the-art supercomputer network laboratory for mine/mill simulations; and• designing intelligent bulkheads to seal tunnels following mine closure to survive for 1000 years.This latter project involves the establishment of a research station at the Britannia mine site, 45 km north of Vancouver, which will provide a full-scale facility to design the “Millennium Plug” and contribute directly to the solution to one of North America’s worst ARD-contaminated sites."

"MMG (Minerals and Metals Group) operates the LXML Sepon’s mineral processing facility located 40 kilometers north of the town of Sepon, in the Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR. The Sepon copper plant produces 70,000 tons/year of LME grade A copper cathode using leachautoclave- SX/EW-flotation technology (Baxter et al., 2003). Pyrite recovery in the flotation circuit is critical to the operation, as it is used to generate acid and soluble ferric ion for the leach circuit. Low pyrite recovery has been an on-going challenge in the flotation circuit. Final tailings characterization work done by Ian Wark Research Institute (Bassell et al., 2006) showed that the pyrite losses to the tailings are made up of a combination of coarse liberated particles and finer particles that have been coated by clay fines.In December of 2005, a joint Cytec-MMG technical program was initiated to address the pyrite recovery issue. A series of diagnostic tests were performed in the Cytec Stamford Research Facility using synthetic plant water showing that the collector was precipitating as a metal salt and was unavailable for mineral attachment. The tests also identified several collector chemistries that would likely be robust in the low pH (< 1), high dissolved metal ion environment and will not complex with metal ions in solution. With the support of the Sepon on-site engineers, an extensive, successful laboratory program was completed, which was subsequently followed by on-plant testing that showed a step wise improvement in pyrite recovery.INTRODUCTIONLow pyrite recovery has been an ongoing problem in the flotation circuit at Sepon. Sulfur recovery (indirect measure of pyrite) was improved from 40% to 65%-75% in mid-2005 when on site laboratory work confirmed that AERO® 8045 Promoter was a more effective collector then AERO® 407 Promoter. However, sulfur recoveries above 65% could never be achieved. Sepon requested the Ian Wark Research Institute to complete a surface analysis study using Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy to determine if clay coated pyrite played a role. It was concluded that the pyrite losses to the tailings are made up of a combination of coarse (+ 100µm) liberated particles and finer (-74µm) particles that have been coated by clay fines. The majority of the losses appear to be due to the former. In December of 2005, a series of diagnostic tests were performed in Stamford using synthetic plant water in order to identify what chemistries would likely be robust in the slimy low pH and high dissolved metal ion solution environment. Results showed that several chemistries would not complex with ferric, ferrous or copper in solution and therefore should perform well in the Sepon flotation. The incumbent collector, AERO® 8045 Promoter was complexing with metal ions in solution. This resulted in the collector not being available for adsorption onto pyrite."

It contains about 20,000 terms; these include both technical and purely local terms related to metal mining, coal mining, quarrying, petroleum, and natural gas, and metallurgical works; names of useful, important, and common minerals and rocks; an<lgeological terms. It presents in one comprehensive volume the available standard, technical terms relating to the mining and mineral industry, as well as provincialisms that have been or are now in use in English-speaking countries. The glossary also includes many terms relating to ceramics and the clay industry, glass making, foundry practice, railway and building construction, electrical installation and power-plant equipment, and chemical terms relating to metallurgical practice. Complete lists of terms for' each of these allied industries are beyond the scope of this glossary. Paleontological terms, although closely associated with geology, are far removed from mining and metallurgical operations, and for this reason have been omitted. In a compilation of this magnitude, it is difficult, within a reasonable time to verify all definitions as to the latest usage. Much verifying was done and it is hoped that the best and latest definitions have been used. Reference to the publications cited will enable the reader to determine approximately the period when the definition was used. Definitions in use by engineers of high national or international reputation are given first preference. When definitions from different sources are the same, credit is given to the earlier author as being the original or nearest to the original source. Immediately following each term the name of the locality wherein the word is presumed to have originated or is widely used is given, where such information is available. The name of the author or source from which the definition was obtained follows the definition, and serves as a key to the publications listed. The Narragansett Bay Commission (NBC) is a regional sewer authority that serves ten communities in the Providence, Rhode Island metropolitan area. From 1992 to 1999, the NBC developed a comprehensive facilities plan to abate Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) pollution in the Upper Narragansett Bay. The plan underwent many major evolutions during this period, most notably the addition of a stakeholder?s process by which NBC demonstrated a site-specific plan to control the pollutants and meet water quality standards. The favored solution consisted of deep tunnel storage with treatment at existing wastewater facilities that had been recently upgraded. In 1999, a final plan was accepted which included two tunnels, five CSO interceptors, twelve sewer separation projects, a wetland facility, and a wastewater treatment facility upgrade. The program is to be constructed over 20 years in three sequential phases (Figure 1). Phase I of the program includes a 4,963 m (16,284 ft) long, 7.9 m (26 ft) diameter, 70.1 m (230 ft) deep storage tunnel; seven drop shafts with connecting adits; ancillary facilities; and a pump station. Construction of Phase I began in 2001 and is expected to be operational by October 2008. This paper focuses on design and construction of the Fields Point Tunnel Pump Station (FPTPS)located at the south end of the main spine tunnel. A189 Ml/day (50 MGD) pump station is required to lift CSO flows from the tunnel to the Fields Point Wastewater Treatment Facility (FPWWTF). The pumps are to be housed in a 35.6 m × 18.6 m ×20.7 m (117 ft × 61 ft × 68 ft), 91.4 m (300 ft) deep cavern excavated in a complex meta-sedimentary rock of the Rhode Island Formation, and connected to the surface by 9.7 m (32 ft) and 3.4 m (11 ft) diameter shafts. Factors which influenced selection of the size, configuration and location of facilities included the preferred arrangement of pumps, critical aspects of site geology, and estimated cost. Technical and value engineering reviews also affected the final design. Following Notice to Proceed (NTP), concerns were raised by the contractor regarding constructability and design. Additional geotechnical investigation and independent engineering review were employed to validate the design assumptions. The cavern was successfully excavated and sup-ported in rock, completed on schedule and within budget in 2005. In 1992 the NBC retained Louis Berger Group (LBG) as Program Manager (PM) for the CSO Abatement Program. LBG thereafter formed a design team including: Jacobs Engineering Group(JEG) as the designer for underground structures and near surface collection facilities; Black and Veatch(B&V) to design the pumping system and associated facilities; Haley and Aldrich (H&A) to oversee the geotechnical program; and Malcolm Pirnie to design the system-wide instrumentation and control system. Construction management, resident engineering, and inspection services were provided by the joint venture Gilbane/Jacobs Associates (G/J).

Sable Zinc Kabwe Limited ("Sable") is a base metal processing plant, two kilometres south of Kabwe Town in Central Province, Zambia. The region has a rich history in mining and minerals production, being a major lead and zinc producer from the 1900s up to the mid-1990s. In 2006, a copper plant was built at the Sable processing site to treat third-party copper and cobalt oxide ores and concentrates. The oxide leaching plant included whole ore leaching, solvent extraction and production of 8,000 tpa LME Grade A copper cathode. The plant was placed on care and maintenance in 2014, and Glencore Plc ("Glencore") took the opportunity to convert the plant using a minimal budget, to an Albion Process™ plant to treat local refractory copper concentrates unsuitable or uneconomic for smelting. The Albion Process™ plant comprises an M100 IsaMill™ operating in acidic conditions such that raffinate from the downstream process is recycled back to slurry the concentrate delivered to site thus maximising copper tenor in solution and reducing water consumption. The finely ground concentrate feeds an oxidative leaching plant using the existing stainless steel oxide leach reactors converted to Albion Process™ duty by fitting HyperSparge™ supersonic oxygen injectors and gas dispersing agitators. The leached slurry is then directed to the existing solid/liquid separation equipment, and the PLS is then sent to the existing SX/EW plant. The plant also allows for cobalt recovery from the raffinate. The plant was designed based on testwork on regional copper concentrates. The plant was designed to toll treat a range of concentrates, and so the design was flexible With the flexibility of the Albion Process™ being one of its distinct advantages, the plant was ideally suited for tolling regional concentrates. The plant was commissioned and ramped up in six weeks using low-grade Zambian copper concentrate, and produced exclusively LME Grade A copper with over 99% leach recovery in the Albion circuit. INTRODUCTION The Sable Zinc Kabwe Limited ("Sable") process plant is located 2 km south of Kabwe town and 140km north of Lusaka in Central Province, Zambia. In 1902, rich deposits of zinc and lead were discovered with mines and processing plants operating in and around the town until mid-1994. In 2000, the Kabwe Mine tailings dams were sold to Sable, a newly established company, as part of a purchase deal for other plots and facilities. Up until 2004, Sable produced zinc cathodes in an SX/EW plant treating wash plant tailing material. In 2004, Sable was acquired by the South African mining company Metorex Limited ("Metorex"), and in 2006 a copper/cobalt SX/EW plant was built to produce copper cathode from malachite ore supplied from the Democratic Republic of Congo. In 2011, Jinchuan Group International Resources Co. Ltd acquired Metorex and Sable was in turn sold to a subsidiary of Glencore Plc ("Glencore").

"The start-up of new plants, extending from the commissioning of equipment to the production ramp-up, is a critical period where the processing circuit operation must be done in a structured and well controlled way to enable the gradual, safe and rapid achievement of production targets. The magnitude of the many risks associated with this pivotal period is accentuated in the actual context of low commodity prices. However, the implementation of a method that analyzes risks associated with a start-up, their probability of occurrence and their impacts leads to the identification of a series of preventive actions that can be applied in order to reduce potential negative impacts.Soutex has been involved in numerous start-ups over the last few years and has developed a structured methodology to assess this crucial period, maximize the pre-start-up preparation, ensure a smoother and safer ramp-up period and minimize the time needed before reaching commercial production.This paper describes a method to identify preventive actions to apply in order to reduce risks related to a plant start-up. Then, the various steps of the method are demonstrated using the industrial case study of the Canadian Malartic gold plant situated in Abitibi, Québec. The specific preventive actions, during start-up, the organisational measures and the ramp-up plan are detailed as they were effectively achieved. Finally, the post start-up actions are presented as well as some key results illustrating the achievement of their prior defined objectives.IntroductionPlanning a new plant or new circuit start-up in a mine installation involves various risks, both at the economical and safety levels. Unprepared staff and equipment can lead to safety issues that could threaten plant staff as well as the environment. Moreover, a poorly prepared start-up could often lead to equipment break-down, production stoppages and delays, leading to important economic impacts, delaying commercial production and therefore affecting directly the profitability of mining projects.It is common in the industry to have structured commissioning procedures for major equipment taken separately. Technical personnel from the equipment manufacturing company would usually come on site in order to perform the pre-operation verification, dry runs and the first hours of operations. This kind of assistance is usually focussed on one piece of equipment and neglects the interactions between the various equipment of the production chain. The commissioning phase is usually maintenance oriented and the information given by the manufacturing representative seldomly flows through the operation staff (in the case of this paper, the denomination “staff” refers to both managing and operating employees). The global process is usually not taken into consideration by the technical personnel sent on-site by the manufacturer during the commissioning phase. Many papers can be found describing the commissioning of new equipment focussing on the technology (Côté and Adante (2009), Wells et al (2007)) but without dealing with its integration process in the complete production chain."

Anglo American Platinum has adopted a strategy of best practice principles (BPP) for sampling, mass measurement, analysis, and metal accounting for more than a decade now. When new plants are designed, the most suitable sampling equipment and sampling protocols are implemented and material flows and plant layouts are designed around sampling strategies. A few years ago, a crushing plant for a high-grade matte stream was commissioned. The design called for the high-grade material to be crushed to 95% passing 2 mm, and the design allowed for a single-cutter primary Vezin sampler taking increments from a gravity flowing stream at regular intervals while filling a tanker for pneumatic offload at the base metal refinery. This was a single point of sampling and analysis that would measure the wanted output from the smelting complex and the input to the refineries. In addition, the design incorporated the functionality to collect increments in an ?interleaved? fashion from the Vezin sampler for internal precision checks. The metal accounting strategy for Anglo Platinum involves the ongoing measurement of all inputs, outputs, and stock levels for all operations for platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal (BM) content. Included are yearly stocktakes, usually done on 1 February, across the smelters and refineries (at least the base metal refinery). In the accounting period immediately following the introduction of the new crushing and sampling facility, a trend was developing whereby the absolute difference between the physical stock and theoretical stock (PGMs predominantly) increased for the two respective sites on an ongoing basis. The smelter showed an increase in physical stock compared to the theoretical stock (sender) and the base metal refinery showed an increase in theoretical stock against physical stock. Because of this anomaly, an additional stocktake was held in September for the period in question, and it was confirmed through the physical stock measurement results that the PGM accounting problem was indeed pointing towards the evaluation of the high-grade matte stream. This paper showcases parts of the process that took place to explain the poor accountabilities for the two sites. Previous results from the sampler ratification process (of the interleaved sampling design) were reanalysed, a physical inspection was carried out on the sampling system again, and the sampler performance was monitored (quality control parameters) for the period. From these investigations, it was found that airflows inside the Vezin introduced the sampling bias. A change in sampling protocol was introduced, as well as certain physical changes to the sampling equipment, to eliminate the airflow and thus the bias conditions significantly. The accounting period that followed the phased upgrading process showed that the accounting between the smelter and base metal refinery had been restored to within statistical limits (difference between physical and theoretical stock below 5% relative to theoretical stock). This case study discusses impacts of excessive Earth Retention System (ERS) lateral movement at a project in city of Chicago. The ERS (cantilevered sheeting) moved inward towards the excavation and caused lateral displacement and cracks in six drilled shafts located about 1 to 2 lateral feet (0.3 to 0.6 m) from the face of the sheet pile wall. Up to 9 inches (23 cm) of horizontal movement was observed on top of the supporting sheet-pile. Similarly, survey measurements showed the top of the drilled shafts moved laterally up to 8 inches (20.3 cm). To evaluate the cause of failure and determine a remediation solution, the soil, shaft and site conditions were investigated. Pile Integrity Tests (PIT) were conducted at the affected drilled shafts. The shafts with identified anomalies were cored and video-recorded. The cause of the failure was determined to be related to variable soil conditions across the site, deeper excavation (i.e., increased effective ERS wall height), and other differences between design and as-built conditions. Internal bracing, in the form of walers and rakers, was installed to limit further movement of the sheet pile as a short-term solution, with additional grade beams framed into the basement slab-on-grade as a long- term solution. Five of the six cracked shafts were spliced with reinforcing bars and high strength grout and one shaft was replaced. INTRODUCTION The subsoil in the Chicago Area mostly consists of glacial till clays underlain by water-bearing granular soil over bedrock. The glacial clays have very soft to medium consistencies for a typical thickness of 30 to 50 feet (9.1 to 15.2 m) below which hard clays (Hardpan, i.e., heavily over-consolidated clay soils) are encountered. The soft clays are often referred to as the “Chicago Blue Clay”. Beach Sands are also found above upper soft clays in several areas, especially within a three-mile strip near Lake Michigan (Peck and Reed 1954). Due to the existence of soft clay in Chicago area, supporting the mid to high rise buildings on drilled shafts extended to Hardpan is a common practice in modern building design. In the early 19th century it used to take about 3 weeks to excavate 1 shaft hole and about 1½ days to fill the shaft with concrete in Chicago (Manierre 1916). The early 19th century methodology of excavating a shaft consisted of hand digging the shaft, installing wood lagging as temporary shoring with spoils removed with a rope and pulley system from the surface. Today, the excavation of a typical drilled shaft in Chicago uses heavy drilling equipment and requires much less time for excavation and concrete placement. It is not uncommon for contractors to excavate shafts and place concrete at a rate of about 2 to 5 drilled shafts per day (with one drill rig).

In drier regions of the world, total containment of cyanide liquors for rainfalls less than a specific design value is often required by government regulation. For example, in Queensland total containment is required for rainfalls up to 'the 1% annual exceedence probability. In equatorial regions, where rainfall greatly exceeds evaporation, a total containment requirement is unrealistic and this is recognized by regulatory authorities. Regulatory constraints typically require that cyanide concentrations at an agreed downstream compliance point not exceed a specific value more than a specified fraction of the time. While the excessive rainfall prevents total containment, it does provide substantial dilution. This paper outlines a methodology for assessing the distribution of cyanide concentrations at a downstream compliance point in an equatorial region with limited hydrometeorological data. Consider the hypothetical mine environs depicted in Figure 1. The mine is located near the catchment divide and draws its water supply via a gravity line. Tailings from the process plant are piped to a tailings dam on a sub-catchment below the plant site. The objective is to determine the distributions of cyanide species concentrations at a compliance point just upstream of a major settlement to ensure they do not exceed regulatory limits.

The emerging discipline of ægeometallurgyÆ is not new but is becoming increasingly recognised as a discrete and high-value activity that reflects an ongoing commercial and cultural trend towards more effective mine site integration and optimisation. The AMIRA International P843 æGeMIIIÆ project (Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling) is a major new cross discipline research collaboration designed to provide support for this emerging industry trend. The project is currently supported by 18 global mineral companies and involves collaboration between the CODES Centre of Excellence (University of Tasmania), JKMRC and BRC (University of Queensland) and CSIRO Exploration and Mining. These groups represent recognised research excellence in the fields of economic geology, automated core logging, advanced microscopy and process mineralogy, mineral processing, mine planning and resource optimisation. The needs and challenges of geometallurgy as an integrated activity will be outlined together with the ongoing contribution and aims of the AMIRA P843 æGeMIIIÆ project. The main emphasis is on development of predictive geometallurgical indices for key processing performance parameters that reflect inherent geological variability. The ultimate aim is to provide predictive indices of geometallurgical performance that can be confidently embedded into resource models and used for risk-defined mine planning and optimisation.

The Mt. Todd Gold Project in the Northern Territory is a joint venture between Billiton Australia Gold Pty. Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell Australia Limited, and Zapopan NL. As manager of the project, Billiton is guided by Shell's corporate policy that foremost consideration be given to protection of the environment from unacceptable impact and that sound environmental programmes are to be implemented effectively at all company operations. This policy on Health, Safety and the Environment helps operating companies in addressing environmental matters in a systematic way and gives guidance on the practical implementation of a range of controls to protect the environment. Most importantly, it seeks to do this in a co­ operative rather than adversarial manner. In developing the Mt. Todd Gold mine the joint venturers' environmental objectives have therefore been to plan and operate the project consistent with the highest industry standards and community expectations and in accordance with all Northern Territory government requirements. A development strategy has been designed which minimises environmental effects. Planning priorities have focused on the successful co-existence of the mine with an endangered species of bird, the Gouldian Finch, which breeds in the area; the mitigation of impacts on surface and ground. water qualities; and the protection of significant Aboriginal cultural and archaeological sites.

1.1 Biological Process Description Pintail Systems, Inc. (PSI) has developed and in partnership with their clients in the mining industry has applied biological remediation processes for detoxification of spent ore and process solutions from heap leach operations. Contaminants that are treated to mine closure levels or drinking water standards include cyanides (weak acid dissociable and total cyanides), thiocyanate, nitrates and heavy metals. Biological processes are both site-specific and ore-specific processes. PSI specializes in isolating indigenous microorgan­isms from spent ore and process solutions and augments them in the laboratory for enhanced bio-detoxification in the field. Bioaugmentation in the lab is a key to successful heap bio-detox in the field. In PSI's bioaugmentation processes native microorganisms are isolated from the spent ore environment and are tested for contaminant remediation capacity. A majority of the indigenous microbes will be tolerant of the spent ore environment but will not contribute to contaminant metabolism. Indigenous enrichment or biostimulation of these non-working microbes by adding trace nutrients can competitively inhibit the working microbes. For this reason PSI focuses on the bioaugmentation process where non-working microbes are discarded and the working population is enhanced through stress, mutation and exogenous enrichment before it is re-introduced to the heap and process solutions.

Two pilot scale bioreactors designed to treat acid mine drainage primarily using sulfate reducing bacteria were constructed underground at the Eagle Mine Superfund site in Minturn Colorado. The project was designed to test th applicability of microbiological treatment on water with high metals concentration and to test the process in an underground environment. Objectives were, 1) to compare metal removal, pH increase, and sulfate reduction in a single stage reactor with a double stage reactor of equal volume at varying flow rates; 2) to determine where within the substrate treatment occurs· and 3) to examine volume versus surface ara as a design parameter for optimizing metal removal processes. Results from the reactors showed that the single stage reactor and double stage reactor performed equally well for the removal of Cd, Cu, Pb, Fe, Mn, and Zn. pH increased above 6.5 in both reactors. Greater than 97% of metals were removed within the first ten inches of substrate. Volume proved to be a more useful parameter for determining removal rates than area. Using volume as a design parameter rather than surface area enables PMDT systems to be constructed as packed columns rather than broad wetlands, Thus, space requirements are significantly reduced.

The McLaughlin Mine is based on a world class epithermal gold deposit located in the coastal thrust fault of northern California, about 1 12 air km (70 air miles) north of San Francisco. Owned and operated by Homestake Mining Co., the McLaughlin deposit contains about 18 Mt (20 million st) of gold ore at an average grade of 5.2 g/t (0.152 oz per st), or about 93 t (3 million oz). The area was identified as a gold target by Homestake in early 1978. Drilling confirmed it to be a commercial deposit by 1980. The mine was then planned, engineered, built and brought into production by March of 1985. The deposit was historically a part of the Knoxville District. It was mined for cinnabar, which was used to produce mercury for use in recovering gold and silver in the Mother Lode and Comstock districts. At that time, the mine was called the Manhatten and later the One Shot Mine. It was worked for more than 100 years, producing about 76,000 flasks of mercury without any awareness of the presence of economic concentrations of gold. By 1978, the site was largely disturbed and entirely unreclaimed.

After being closed for three years, Specialty Minerals Inc.&apos;s Port Inland limestone facility reopened in the spring of 1992 as a commercial limestone producer. In 1990, Specialty Minerals, a division of Pfizer Inc., bought Port Inland&apos;s reserves and equipment from Inland Steel because of the strategic value of the limestone for the production of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC). Specialty Minerals&apos; project team faced many challenges in reconstructing the Port Inland facility. Many traditions and norms had to be overturned to achieve the productivity, flexibility and cost necessary to survive in today&apos;s competitive minerals environment. Port Inland&apos;s history Inland Steel built Port Inland in 1930. It was operated as a captive source of metallurgical grade limestone for the steel industry until its closure in 1989. The facility is located in the Upper Pen¬insula of Michigan on the north edge of Lake Michigan. Operations consist of a deep water port facility with crushing, screening and stockpile storage for 453 kt (500,000 st) of finished product at the port. Ninety-nine percent of the stone is shipped by lake boat to ports within the Great Lakes. The operation is unique in that both metallurgical dolomite and limestone are produced on site.

The Endako Mine is an open-pit molybdenum mine located in the north central region of British Columbia, Canada, about 960 km (600 road miles) north of Vancouver. Production for the latter part of 1992 was expected to averaged 63.5 kt/d (70,000 stpd). Of that amount, 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd) was the mill feed. This production is achieved with five 11.5 to 14.5 m3 (15 to 19 cu yd) electric shovels, six Euclid R190 and two Unit Rig M120 diesel-electric haul trucks, and three 320 mm (12.25 in.) electric rotary drills. There are three ore zones delineated into pit areas: the Endako, Denak East and Denak West. Present mill feed source is the southeast stage of the Endako Pit. Stripping is carried out in the south wall stage also of the Endako Pit. The mine high grade aggregate is reduced in the primary and secondary crushing circuits before processing in conventional RM-BM-flotation circuits. The majority of the molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) is roasted on site to produce technical grade molybdenum oxide (M003). A portion is further refined and treated to yield a 99.9% pure MoS2 product.
