The results of extensive field tests of a new and powerful method of hard rock excavation are presented in this report.* The method, known by the acronym REAM (Rapid Excavation and Mining), employs high velocity, smooth bore cannons to efficiently deliver energy to the rock and has been demonstrated for underground tunneling, drilling, surface benching, scaling, and secondary breakage in hard granitic rock at the Hope Valley Mine test site in California. Solid projectiles made from inexpensive materials such as concrete or steel, and weighing from 8 to 12 pounds, are launched by conventional high speed cannons and impact the rock at velocities of 5000 feet per second--an impact energy of about 4 million foot pounds (Figure 1). The energy applied at peak pressures of nearly 2 million psi over a period of tens of microseconds breaks down the rock by a complex mechanism of crushing, spalling, and initiation and propagation of fractures produced by the interaction of successive impacts and free surfaces. "Mine waste storages including tailings dams and waste rock dumps represent arguably the biggest risk on a mine site from both physical and geochemical viewpoints, related firstly to structural stability and the consequences of failure and secondly from potential on-going seepage or run-off of acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD). The risks are most likely to increase during operations and continue through the closure and post-closure phases, with the waste storages likely to be the most difficult features to resolve in the mine closure process. Contaminated water quality from tailings dams and waste rock dumps can require treatment "in perpetuity" at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars. The problem is increasing with ever larger mine operations and waste generation volumes. This paper identifies leading practice methodologies in planning and operating mines and process plants to minimise the risks from tailings storages and how this might also affect waste rock management and even the design of mine excavations. These methodologies require a "big-picture" approach to develop an understanding of the overall issues and identify synergies between the different operational areas on a mine site that can reduce overall risk. With a conservative approach and realistic allowance for future costs it is possible to facilitate decisions at the mine planning stage that can reduce risk and save cost over the long term. This is in contrast to the common approach where each operational area is looking to minimise its own costs with a short-term view. Incorrect mine methodologies can be developed by allowing net present value (NPV) accounting methods to trivialise future closure issues.Methodologies discussed include: Integrated Waste Management - Significant structural improvements to tailings dams can be achieved if the structures can be incorporated into the waste rock dumps. Risk of AMD can also be reduced by utilising the tailings and waste rock effectively. This could go even further to consider the placement of wastes to limit mine void environmental issues; Process Optimisation - Water quality and the nature of potential tailings dam structures can be highly influenced by the geo-chemistry of the tailings. This can be modified by processing, where simple changes such as maintaining separate streams of geo-chemically different tailings rather than recombining them or by initiating further processing to remove problematic minerals such as sulphides; Enhancing Geophysical Properties - The geochemical performance of waste repositories can be greatly influenced by the geophysical properties of the stored materials, particularly the air-water characteristics, which are influenced by particle size, density and permeability. The geotechnical properties can be enhanced by strategic paddock dumping, blending and compaction.These methodologies are demonstrated by case histories.CITATION:Brett, D, 2013. Diagnostic regression analysis has been used as a tool to improve the recovery efficiencies of numerous gold mills, yielding significant revenue increases. In the course of the analyses it has generally been found that ore head grade is a statistically dominant variable affecting the overall gold recovery. Higher grades invariably generate higher recoveries. Examples are given from several operations in the world's two largest gold producing countries, South Africa and the United States. The plants considered cover the treatment of both oxide and refractory ores. A simple generalized model is presented relating tails to head grade. Since ore grade variations are beyond operational control, operators should not be held accountable for decreases in recovery caused by lower head grades. Conversely, the ore must take credit for many a recovery increase. Rigorous metallurgical test work, feasibility analysis, production planning and budgeting should allow for recovery variations due to grade fluctuations. Since the phenomenon is a reflection of ore geology and mineralogy, which are ore specific, comparison of recoveries at different times or sites is not meaningful without a detailed understanding of the mineralogical constraints on gold liberation.

A new technology for the processing of secondary raw materials containing precious and Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) has been designed at the Laboratory of Heavy Metals at USTU. The technology is based on hydrometallurgical processing of the materials followed by sorption separation of the PGMs from the leach solution. Different versions of the technology can be realised depending on the type of processed material but the fundamentals are similar. Some parts of the technology can easily be integrated into existing flowsheets. The stage of sorption removal of platinum and palladium was tested on the site of the Joint Stock Company (JSC) "Uralelectromed" on pilot plant scale. A process was developed to obtain fine gold, silver, platinum and palladium. No waste is produced because all solutions are recycled. There are no gas emissions. Selective sorption of platinum and palladium from silver-containing solutions is possible even if the concentration ratio of silver to PGMs is one thousand to one. Sorption behaviour of the PGMs as a function of the bulk metal concentrations was studied. Recovery of 90-95% of platinum and 70-80% of palladium is possible.

A conference attended by a limited number of invited participants was held last September in Denver under the auspices of the Underground Construction Research Council of ASCE funded by the National Science Foundation (RANN) to explore the problem of accelerating the transfer of advanced geophysical technology, used principally in the petroleum exploration industry, into more effective and widespread use in subsurface investigations for underground construction. There are technological problems, but technical difficulties and unfavorable ratios of benefits to costs are not the major obstacles. The problem centers on the complex way in which potential net benefits are translated into effective incentives to innovate for each actor in the complex web of individual, corporate and institutional entities involved in the planning, designing, building, funding, operation and ownership of major underground construction projects. The entities responsible for site investigation, design concepts and specifications do not directly bear the risks of unanticipated costs and failures, nor directly gain from savings. The conventional unit-price construction contract is strongly implicated in blocking innovation. Problems of risks and incentives, more than technical feasibility, must be solved before large investments in technical adaptation and adoption can occur.

Despite its growth over the years, necessitating ever¬larger office accommodation, the Gold Fields group changed its head office address in Johannesburg only twice in 94 years. The first move was at the turn of the century, from the then select suburb of Doornfontein to the corner of Fox and Simmonds Streets. The second move was in the thirties, from that address-now the Reserve Bank building-to the well-known address of 75 Fox Street. With the advent of the first mines of the West Wits Line by the end of the thirties, 75 Fox Street proved too small, and the eastern section of the Commissioner Street side of the present head office was added on. In the fifties, when space once more became a serious problem, the old Exploration building was purchased and demolished, and the present west wing on Commissioner Street was built on the site. In the early seventies, cramped conditions again made life difficult and, despite a reorganization of the interior layouts, the need for expansion remained critical. Microbial biofilms are essentially biologically driven, geochemically reactive interfaces between solid surfaces and aqueous solution. Field investigation of acid rock drainage (ARD) associated biofilms at the Onaping nickel mine (Onaping, ON, Falconbridge Ltd.) characterizing: (1) micro-geochemical gradients (pH and 02) (2) metal fractionation amongst biofilm solid components, and (3) microbial communities; over both seasonal and diel timescales, indicates biofilms are highly metal reactive. Results show that biofilms accumulate metals seasonally within two microbially controlled solid fractions: amorphous hydrous manganese oxide (HMO) biominerals and the organic biofilm matrix. The biofilm geochemical microenvironment, driven largely by microbial activity, dynamically impacts biofilm metal behaviour over diel timescales. These results indicate that microbes can play significant roles in bulk system reactive metal transport. On-going investigation seeks to characterize the microbial players and the microbial-geochemical linkages involved in Mn oxyhydroxide formation and subsequent metal sequestration, with the goal of engineering this microbial activity as a bioremediative approach. This approach will have utility beyond specific application to the Falconbridge Onaping site to ARD mine environments in general, as the likely microbes involved in these processes are typically common across ARD systems.

Reduction bleaching is used to improve the brightness and color of the kaolin pigments sold to the paper and speciality industries. The bleach re¬duces the iron oxide associated with kaolin deposits to a colorless form by the following reaction: Na2S2O42+ 6Fe+3 + 4 H2O -> 2 NaHSO4 + 6Fe+2 + 6H+ (Conley et al., 1964). At present, sodium hydrosulfite is used by the kaolin industry as the reductive bleach. It is often purchased commercially as a liquid solution and added into an acidified slurry. Before the use of commercial sodium hydrosulfite, kaolin plants manufactured zinc hydrosulfite on site by adding zinc dust to sulfurous acid made by passing SO2 gas into water. This process was abandoned in the 1970s due to environmental concerns about zinc in waste waters. In the 1970s, Engelhard patented a process that made sodium hydrosulfate from an iron hydrosulfate (Tiethof, 1978). Difficulties with separating the iron hydroxide byproduct from the bleach and a decrease in the cost of commercial bleach caused the project to be abandoned.

Ion flotation of gold is a process continuing to be developed to selectively beneficiate dilute aurocyanide liquors using a novel surface­active complexing agent. Aeration of these liquors causes accumulation of the precious metal species in the froth concentrate produced in a flotation column. Successful development of ion flotation for concentrating solids-free liquors would offer a low--cost method for recovering specific metals from heap leach runoff or waste tailings solutions. The cost of constructing and operating a 100 tph gold ion flotation facility has been compared with the relevant carbon adsorption plant costs. Reductions in operating costs of 25% and installed capital of 40% are possible in relevant expenditure areas. For an 'average' processing plant, this equates to annual operating savings of A$ 170 000 and a capital saving of A$ 515 000, with a three-point increase in total (mine and plant) site DCF ROI. High gold inventories are eliminated and the number of processing steps is reduced. The application of gold ion flotation will initially be confined to heap leach operations in the western U.S.A., although use of the process in mine abandonment programmes elsewhere is also an area of future development.

The application of the Cyprus Cyanisorb process was investigated using a pilot scale facility at the NERCO DeLamar Silver Mine (DSM) in Owyhee County, Idaho. The purpose of this process is to remove cyanide from the DeLamar mill tailings slurry prior to its introduction to the tailings impoundment. This will maintain the tailings impoundment solution in a detoxified condition and thus prevent migratory bird mortalities. The cyanide removed is to be collected and recycled to the mill. The process successfully recovered approximately 90 percent of the weak acid dissociable cyanide (WAD), reducing the effluent tailings cyanide concentration from about 300 ppm to less than 20 ppm. This was accomplished by stripping the slurry with air in a packed tower and recovering the volatilized HCN in a packed absorption tower. Data were obtained for the design of the full scale facility including the stripping and absorption towers, currently under construction at the DeLamar Mine site. Finally, test results indicated that the final pH of reneutralization can be optimized to provide for minimal gold and silver losses, while selectively precipitating unwanted metal impurities (Zinc, Selenium, Iron, and Copper) from solution

Over 90 per cent of the explosives in Hong Kong are used in civil engineering works. The Hong Kong Government controls all explosives and delivers on a daily basis to each site which it has licensed. Such deliveries need to be arranged the day before actual delivery. With the vagaries of the traffic in Hong Kong, contractors do not necessarily know the time of arrival of explosives. Contractors in general would like to reduce their exposure to these potential delays and the high cost of explosives deliveries. The high population density and urbanisation means that rock blasting has to be carried out in close proximity to other property. In order to protect life, property and utilities, it is not only necessary to employ proper blasting techniques but also to adopt effective safety measures. The Route 3 Advance Earthworks project is located on the north-west corner of Tsing Yi Island, Hong Kong. It is one of the Airport Core Programme projects for the new Chek Lap Kok Airport. Secured by Leighton Contractors (Asia) Ltd in early-1992, the work commenced in May of the same year, with completion and handover to the Hong Kong Government in May 1995.

The Indian Mining sector is subjected to a number of trends including call for global transition towards the route to sustainable development. Several regulations were enacted by the Government departments, from time to time, in order to identify the problems faced by the mining industry, including small-scale mining operations and to suggest appropriate mitigation measures in the form of environmental standards and certifications. During this process, a pursuit of sustainable development is regarded as an important area responding to socio-economic conditions, priorities and thus guides eventually corporate policies and practices. Thus, there is a need to formulate strategies for sustainable development. Based on these strategies some environmental indicators were developed in order to track down the progress and to evaluate its success. A case study pertaining to a group of iron ore mines in North Goa and Chromite mines in Sukinda, Orissa was selected for this study. Base line environmental data has been generated in the respective study sites. A core set of environmental indicators monitoring environmental progress based on the P-S-R model pioneered by OECD is linked with indicators for assessing the integration of environmental concerns.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of close-in blasting effects on various types of structures and building materials, as encountered in this writer's professional practice. Structures range from old, deteriorated historical monuments to new, heavily reinforced buildings. Materials range from clay adobe to concrete and steel. Site locations range from tropical to arctic. Blasting ranges from sculpture blasting inside buildings to "coyote" blasting and large surface blasting operations. Space limitations permit a brief discussion of only 25-30 specific cases, but they have been selected to be typical of conditions found on hundreds of similar cases. The writer was asked to present a discussion of representative cases where relatively high vibration intensities were experienced. Virtually all of these cases were free of damage, but the few damage cases provide valuable insight to the mechanisms involved. Observations of such damage and non-damage cases have served as the basis of this writer's criteria for various structures and materials, as well as the technology to conduct blasting operations within those criteria. A sampling of these experiences is gladly shared with the reader.

Concentrations of He, CO2, and O2 in soil gases were measured regularly for more than a year at a site near Golden, Colorado. Samples were collected from a hollow probe at 0.75-m depth and from a plastic hemisphere on the ground surface. Soil temperature, air temperature, percent humidity, And barometric pressure were also measured. Soil moisture was measured only indirectly as amount of rain or snowfall. Higher concentrations of CO2 in both the 0.75-m and surface samples correlated with higher soil and air temperatures, which suggests that CO2 was produced by bacteria. Lower concentrations of helium in both the 0.75-m and surface samples correlated with higher soil and air temperatures. Rain and snowfall appear to affect helium concentrations. Carbon dioxide concentrations were lowest when snow lay on the ground for extended periods of time. No correlation was seen between barometric pressure or percent humidity and concentrations of He, CO2, or O2 at 0.75-m depth or at the ground surface. No correlation, either positive or negative, was seen between concentrations of CO2 and O2.

Mining activities usually affect the soil, subsurface layers, water resources, the atmosphere and in general the lives of the people. The effects can be mechanical, biological, ecological and economical in nature and these effects can be characterized by their intensity, frequency, duration and scale. In Oyo State, Southwestern Nigeria efforts are being made to employ a sustainable method in the exploration and exploitation of abundant industrial minerals present in the state. The minerals exploited include talc, clay, marble, sillimanite, tantalite, niobium, beryl, tourmaline aquamarine, rock aggregates, etc. Results of this sustainable approach show that the environmental impacts of surface and underground mining of industrial minerals are not spread far beyond the mines site acreage. More lands are being reclaimed, the amount of dust released into the air has been minimized, the quality of sewage waters produced during operations are minimized, top soils removed during subsurface mining are preserved, the tonnages of minerals exploited are being monitored and controlled. All these point to a positive development in practicing sustainable methods in mineral exploitation to meet the developmental needs of the Oyo State at present and to conserve for the future.

The development of a successful restoration strategy for any drastically disturbed site is dependent upon a thorough understanding of the chemical properties of the spoils or mining wastes that need to be stabilized. The majority of revegetation research in the USA has been conducted on coal mining spoils and coal preparation wastes, and this paper will focus on these two materials and their modification for plant growth and water quality protection. Potential acidity derived from the oxidation of pyritic (FeS2) materials is the most important chemical factor that must be estimated and managed, but physical properties such as severe compaction or excessively low water holding capacity are also very limiting. Conventional soil fertility tests are very difficult to interpret for mine soils because of their tendency to extract elements from fresh, unweathered surfaces that are soluble in the extract, but not plant-available. A wide array of waste products such as sewage sludge biosolids and coal fly ash are readily available for use as mine soil amendments, but their utilization must be carefully matched against the needs of the post-mining plant community and their potential water quality impacts.

"In order to avoid pollution of water in Flemming Brook and Little River, which drain the area in which the Brunswick No. 12 Mine and Concentrator are located, the company has gone to considerable expense in preparing tailings storage and effluent setting ponds. The attached drawing gives a plan of the six settling ponds together with elevations of the dikes and the effluent weirs.All original dikes for the six ponds were constructed from humus-free clay and rock material, which was obtained, preferentially, by excavating from within the dike area. Run-off water, precipitated on the outside slopes of the dams will drain off without contacting the tailing material. A ditch was made north of the dam site to deflect surface run-off to the east into a branch of Flemming Brook.A secondary dike, made from tailings, has recently been erected on No. 1 and No. 2 tailings pond inside and above the earth-filled dike which serves as a roadway. Run-off from the tailings dikes will be retained inside the ponds by ditching between the roadway and tailings dike into ponds 4 and 6."

Benchmarking of mining operations has been in vogue for a number of years: it seems teams are forever flying around the world to try to understand what other operations are doing. However, unless a benchmarking exercise involves data gathering at a fundamental level and a rigorous analysis process is applied, the trip will be nothing more than industrial tourism. When benchmarking is performed thoroughly, the range of comparisons that can be made is extensive and informative, and need not be restricted to sites with similar conditions and equipment fleets. This paper describes the detailed and rigorous process for benchmarking used throughout AMC benchmarking studies. The paper demonstrates how, through drilling down to the underlying drivers, the often heard cry of æyou canÆt compare us, weÆre differentÆ can be overcome. Included in the discussion are a number of significant issues that have been identified during AMC benchmarking studies. The paper then considers the types of opportunities that have been identified and the potential for improvement. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications for planning, measuring and management of operational performance.

In this work, short and long-term tests were performed using different massive mineral sulfide specimens (chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite, galena, covellite and chalcocite) of museum grade and quartz of analytical grade in an acid medium containing silver ions. After attack, the samples were observed by SEM and products characterized by EDS. Parallel, massive specimens of pyrite (FeS2) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) were embedded in an epoxy resin, either electrically isolated or in electrical contact, and treated with silver ions in the presence of bacteria. Finally, massive chalcopyrite and pyrite electrodes were subjected to electrochemical measurements in an acid medium under different experimental conditions (addition of silver ions and inoculation). The results showed that silver deposition takes place preferentially on specific mineral surfaces: chalcopyrite, galena, covellite and chalcocite. The chemical reaction of silver ions with pyrite and sphalerite was negligible at low silver concentration (8 ppm). But sphalerite reacted with silver ions at higher silver concentration (100 ppm). In a mixture of chalcopyrite and pyrite, silver was deposited on the former surface creating new cathodic sites which sped up the electrochemical reactions of chalcopyrite dissolution.

India is a large and growth market for explosives and accessories, which has dramatically changed from complete import dependence to self sufficiency, and now has an exportable surplus. The largest single user is coal mining which is continuing to show a healthy growth with opencast mining becoming increasingly dominant. The explosives industry has kept pace with mining and today all the well renowned explosives technologies of the world are available in the country. While slurry explosives are popular in large diameter, NG based explosives continue to be preferrred in small diameter usage. Emulsion explosives have had a good market response. ANFO usage is limited due to local reasons. As the mine size is increasing, the demand for bulk-on-site explosives is growing. Prices of explosives and accessories are cheap compared to international levels. The user industry is mainly Government owned mines whose profitability is not satisfactory. Explosives industry is over licensed in terms of manufacturing capacity, which is likely to put pressure on the viability of some of the explosives manufacturing units. Scope exists for optimization of blasting parameters through the use of computerized blasting models. The explosives industry is faced with new challenges and opportunities.
