Nickel-base single-crystal superalloys are used for gas turbine airfoil applications due to their excellent high temperature properties. A good understanding of the mechanical response of these alloys under different temperature and loading conditions is essential for modeling their behavior. In this study, the low cycle fatigue behavior of CMSX 2 oriented with the loading axis along [001] was investigated under zero-compression strain-controlled loading at 1100°C. The experiments were performed with or without a two-minute dwell (hold) in compression. The microstructure before and after testing was analyzed to understand the deformation characteristics including the effect of dwell.

The Legislature of the State of Colorado adopted House Bill 1223, "The Colorado Surface Coal Mining Reclamation Act" (The State Act), in 1979. This Act provided for the creation of a state regulatory program as accommodated within Public Law 95-87, "The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977" (SMCRA). Section 34-33-121(2)(a) of the Colorado Revised Statutes (CRS) and Section 516(b) of Public Law 95-87, identically require the underground coal mine operator to "Adopt measures consistent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence causing material damage to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mined stability, and maintain the value and reasonably foreseeable use of such surface lands, except in those instances where the mining technology used requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner..." On July 23, 1980, the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board adopted regulations to administer and enforce the State Act. Amendments to the Rules, including the subsidence regulations were adopted by the Board in August of 1981. These regulations require the prediction, monitoring and mitigation of "material damage" caused by subsidence.

In 1986, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 7,940-acre Southern Otay Mountain Wilderness Study Area (CA-060-029), and the 5,750-acre Western Otay Mountain Wilderness Study Area (CA-060-028) in order to evaluate their mineral resources. The wilderness study areas are located in San Diego County, CA, about 20 miles southeast of San Diego. No mineral resources were identified in the Southern or Western Otay Mountain Wilderness Study Areas, based on literature, field observations, and sample results. The wilderness study areas are underlain by a complex blend of Late Jurassic, moderately metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Evidence of mineralization is not obvious.

In a modern copper smelter, the capital cost of a sulfuric acid plant constitutes the largest single cost item of the total investment. It is thus essential to properly size the acid plant in order to reduce its capital cost and enhance the economic viability of a new smelter project. Whereas the off-gas from a smelting furnace is continuous and generally uniform, the gas flow from the Peirce-Smith converters is intermittent with significant fluctuations. The converters off-gas volume is dependent upon a number of interrelating factors. The most significant factors are the matte feed grade, the system air infiltration, the converter's size and blowing rate, the maximum number of converters simultaneously blowing and the gas cooling system employed. The acid plant size, therefore, is heavily influenced by the converter off-gases. Several of these factors are discussed, and their impact in determining the acid plant size is explored.

Attention has been focused in recent decades upon the precipitation of metal sulphides from acid mine drainage (AMD) and pregnant leach solutions, due to the advantages of the sulphide precipitation process over traditional methods employing hydroxides. The aim of this work was thus to explore technologies for copper precipitation using either Na2S or biogenic sulphide. The recovery of copper sulphide was improved when the initial pH of the solution containing each metal was 4 or excess sulphide was employed. In such, a condition the removal efficiency was 99.9%, corresponding to a residual level of 0.1mg/L for copper in solution. Kinetic parameters for precipitation were determined from the particle size distributions using the method of moments, where the growth and nucleation rates, as well the agglomeration kernel, were calculated. The biogenic sulphide was a suitable alternative to sodium sulphide for copper removal as either sodium sulphide and biogenic sulphide can be utilized to precipitate such a metal allowing the effluent to be compliant with environmental legislation.

The Pilbara region, located in the north-west of Western Australia, is significant as the second-largest source of iron ore on the planet. Iron ore mines owned and operated by Pilbara Iron are located within the Hamersley Basin. This paper refers to the Greater Paraburdoo mines, the 4WEST and 4EAST pits, located on the southern margin of the Hamersley Basin. The groundwater model refers to ephemeral watercourses: Seven Mile and Pirraburdoo creeks, which are adjacent to the two pits, and Ratty Springs, located upstream from 4WEST and within Pirraburdoo creek. The spring and creeks hold cultural heritage significance for local Aboriginal communities. Two of these, the Gobawarrah Minduarra Yinhawanga (GMY) and Innawonga native title claim groups, initiated hydrological work on the two creeks and Ratty Springs, with the aim of determining the affects of dewatering on the natural water flows of these systems. The numerical model used to simulate drawdown in the Pirraburdoo and Seven Mile Creeks was derived from PMWIN Pro software and covered an area of 77 km2. The modelling period was from January 1998 to December 2004, and the prediction period was from January 2005 to December 2015. The model has four layers and incorporated effects caused by mining voids, 4WEST and 4EAST pits, creek bed material, weathered bedrock below creeks and surrounding banded iron formations (BIF). The model has been calibrated using the trial-and-error method set down by Middelmis et al (2001). The current dewatering schedule (12 ML/day) in the 4WEST and 4EAST mining areas does not affect the water table levels in the adjacent creeks significantly or for any considerable periods of time. However, changes to mine plans may occur, for example, in response to changed commodity price and may lead to significant increase in rates of vertical advancement. This, in turn, affects dewatering schedules, as greater vertical advancement requires increased dewatering effort. When an accelerated mine plan is applied to the model and dewatering rates increased to 18 ML/day, drawdowns in the creeks are more noticeable. The model has therefore helped to indicate the extent to which increased dewatering rates may be acceptable, especially in terms of immediate and longer-term damage to riparian species, ie Melaleuca and Eucalypt. Predictions from the model may also allow mine planners to schedule decreased rates of vertical advancement, where these are required to meet environmental constraints.

The Doc Run Company and its predecessors have been mining for over 130 years utilising the room and pillar mining method. This method has left approximately 20 per cent of the orebody in the remaining pillars. The original design and planning for the mines did not include extensive pillar extraction. This paper summarises the introduction of the pillar extraction and backfill techniques which have been implemented since 1991. These techniques include the use of low cost fill walls up to 20 in in height and the use of stinger trucks for topping off the fill. In conjunction with these accomplishments, much experience and confidence has been gained in the use of numerical modelling as a method of predicting pillar stability as the mining of pillars progresses. These advances have led to pillar extraction hecoming a major portion of the overall production and have added to the mine life of Doe Run's six operating mines.

Prefabricated waterproofing sheet membranes are extremely complicated to install in underground sections with complex geometries and, despite being already subjected to quality tests in the factory, the installed membrane often exhibits leakages due to different reasons. Main sources of leaks are the required high amount of welding seams and damages caused during installation of reinforcement, as well as overstretching and poorly installed secondary concrete linings. Also the design of the tunnel lining is strongly influenced and limited by the use of prefabricated waterproofing sheet membranes. The use of sprayed waterproofing membranes for more than a decade has contributed to durability and serviceability, as well as to increasing sustainability of tunnel linings. The presented sprayed waterproofing membrane MasterSeal 345 is an advantageous alternative to prefabricated waterproofing sheet membranes under typical tunnelling conditions, especially in geometrically complex areas, such as in lay-by niches, cross passages and crossover caverns, where installation of conventional waterproofing membranes is inherently difficult, and locating leaks is challenging. This membrane has been successfully used in underground projects with different waterproofing design concepts and under diverse hydro-geological and environmental conditions for over a decade. It provides tunnel designers with different options and optimisation for the design of the tunnel concrete lining. Additional advantages to owners, contractors and designers from the use of the sprayed membrane include flexibility in the design, increased productivity and flexibility in working programming, as well as improved logistics, resulting in significant program and cost savings and reduced long-term maintenance costs. This paper describes the key features of this sprayed waterproofing membrane, its application range and limitations, the waterproofing concept, design options and related benefits. "Coal bursts involve the sudden, violent ejection of coal or rock into the mine workings. They are almost always accompanied by a loud noise, like an explosion, and ground vibration. Bursts are a particular hazard for miners because they typically occur without warning. Despite decades of research, the sources and mechanics of these events are not well understood, and therefore they are difficult to predict and control. Experience has shown, however, that certain geologic and mining factors are associated with an increased likelihood of a coal burst. A coal burst risk assessment consists of evaluating the degree to which these risk factors are present, and then identifying appropriate control measures to mitigate the hazard. This paper summarizes the U.S. and international experience with coal bursts, and describes the known risk factors in detail. It includes a framework that can be used to guide the risk assessment process.BACKGROUNDCoal bursts involve the sudden, violent ejection of coal or rock into the mine workings. During the years 2012-2014, serious coal bursts occurred at three different U.S. room and pillar mines. These events resulted in three fatalities and two permanently disabling injuries (MSHA, 2014; MSHA, 2013). In all three instances, the events occurred during pillar recovery at depths exceeding 1,000 feet (300 m). None of these three mines had previously reported a burst to MSHA. Coal bursts also occurred at three longwall mines during this same time period.Despite decades of research, the sources and mechanics of bursts are not well understood, and therefore these events are difficult to predict and control. Experience has shown, however, that certain risk factors are associated with an increased likelihood of a coal burst. A coal burst risk assessment consists of evaluating the degree to which these risk factors are present. In addition, some control techniques are effective in reducing the likelihood of an event or protecting miners from their effects."

More than 700,000 feet of diamond drilling was completed in the Blind River area between 1953 and 1958. Much of this drilling was at depths which are still not usual in North America. However, as the tendency is to deeper holes, factual data from the Blind River operation may well provide information of value in future programs. Rates of drilling decreased with in-creasing depth, but uncommonly good rates (an average of over 50 feet per day over more than 4,000 feet of hole) were achieved with proper engineering and care. Costs varied as contractors and geologists became familiar with the area Hole deviation in the Blind River area was locally severe and control of the hole trace became a major problem. Careful surveying was necessary and found to be highly re-liable. It was found that control of the hole trace above 1,500 feet was much more difficult than at depths below 1,500 feet. CT scanning tests were used to detect the pre-existing fracture systems of 36 cubical coal blocks. Systematic procedures were developed to construct the pre-existing fracture geometry of the cubical coal blocks from the CT images. Based on the constructed fracture systems, the fracture tensor components were calculated to capture the directional effects of the fracture system of the cubical coal blocks. The effect of the pre-existing fracture system and different combinations of confining stresses on the strength and deformability of coal masses was investigated at a preliminary level using some true triaxial test results and the computed fracture tensor components. The strength of the cubical coal blocks in the loading direction was found to be closely related to the summation of the fracture tensor components in the two perpendicular directions to the loading direction and the level of the confining stress system. The deformability of cubic coal blocks in the loading direction was found to be correlated to the fracture tensor component in the same direction.

The Goldex operation of Agnico-Eagle Mines (AEM) commenced operations in the spring of 2008. Following some months of initial operation, the grinding circuit capacity was under-performing according to the original design throughput. BBA Inc. (BBA) was commissioned, in February 2009, to study the different options and recommend the quickest and most cost-effective solution to increase the grinding circuit throughput rate. The mandate was to increase the throughput of the grinding circuit to beyond the original design of 7,000 tpd to 8,000 tpd or greater, while retaining the existing SAG and ball mills. The circuit was modelled using JKSimMet software to evaluate the different options, each with a number of different operating parameters. The option of secondary crushing of the SAG mill feed was retained. Comparison of the different options and simulation outcomes, design of the secondary crushing circuit, operating conditions, and initial adjustments in the design and operating results of the new grinding circuit are discussed in this paper.

Effective barrier pillar design is an essential component for safe and productive underground coal mining. Barrier pillar design methodologies that incorporate sound engineering judgment have been used for practical everyday usage. The next logical step is to utilize numerical modeling techniques that help combine practical experience and empirical observations into barrier pillar design analysis. A case study is presented that describes the barrier pillar design process, but also highlights the importance of considering the global mine response by evaluating: adjacent pillar stabilities, impact of intersection and entry widths, capacity of primary and secondary bolting systems and rib stabilization used for the safe and efficient removal of the longwall face equipment.

The design of support for underground excavations is a complex process in which the interaction between supports and the rock mass must be evaluated. The strength reduction method (SRM) is useful because it provides a stability factor of the supported excavation that can easily be compared between support alternatives. The method is based on numerical model analysis where the stability factor is determined by reducing the rock mass strength until collapse is indicated in the model. This paper presents the results of validation studies that were conducted using the FLAC3D stress analysis software to compare SRMcalculated stability factors to the empirically based Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) and the Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems (ARBS). The objective was to determine whether the SRM, with its basis in mechanics, would predict similar outcomes as the fundamentally different ARBS and CMRR methods with their basis in empirical observations. A total of 450 different scenarios were evaluated in which the geology, horizontal stress, depth of cover, entry width, support spacing, and support length were varied. The results showed that the SRM-calculated stability factors were able to satisfactorily capture both the ?weak bed? and ?strong bed? adjustments in the CMRR. The SRM results were found to be well correlated to the ARBS stability factors for the 450 cases considered. Further analysis showed that the SRM accurately captures the effect of bolt length, depth of cover, and entry width on the overall stability of an entry.

When a chemical analysis is made of a fertilizer, the amount of K is deter-mined and then calculated to the equivalent amount of K2O. However, the compound K2O does not exist in nature. Most of the world's potash supply is derived from mineral deposits similar to those in Saskatchewan and New Mexico. However, there is some production from concentrated surface brines such as occur in Searles Lake, California; Salduro Marsh, Utah; the Dead Sea; and from well brines in Micl1igan."

Ores containing uranium and vanadium minerals have been mined from the Salt Wash Member of the Morrison Formation from many localities in the Colorado Plateau region since about 1900. The most productive deposits are in a relatively small area in Southwestern Colorado referred to as the Uravan mineral belt. The mineral belt is a narrow elongate area in which uranium-vanadium deposits in the Salt Wash have a closer spacing, larger size, and higher grade than those in adjoining areas. Pre- 1948 ore production from the mineral belt was 655,000 tons averaging 1.91 per cent V2O5 and 0.28 per cent U3O8. Production during the 1948 to 1964 period was 7,900,000 tons of ore averaging 1.46 per cent V2O5 and 0.27 per cent U3O8. The ore deposits occur principally in the uppermost sandstone unit of the Salt Wash. This unit consists of sandstone lenses formed by a system of aggrading braided streams flowing in an easterly direction generally normal to the mineral belt. These lenses, referred to as channels, are as much as one mile in width and average about 50 feet in thickness and can be traced for several miles along their courses. Areas favorable for one deposits are recognized principally by the following criteria: ( 1) a host sandstone thickness of over 30 feet, (2) the presence of carbonaceous material in the host sandstone, and ( 3) gray mudstones and clays associated with the ore-bearing sandstone. The ore minerals are believed to have been precipitated from laterally migrating solutions; there is no apparent genetic relationship between ore deposits and tectonic structural features. Exploratory and development drilling from the surface is conducted in three phases: first, wide-spaced drilling to find and outline favorable channels; second, moderate-spaced drilling in favorable ground to locate ore deposits; and third, close-spaced drilling to block-out ore. Long-hole drilling from underground stations is used to find and delineate extensions of ore bodies being mined. Due to intense production since 1948 from shallow deposits, best potential for new deposits exists in areas where the ore-bearing unit is 600 to 800 feet deep.

Process development is one of the principal tasks required in the course of turning an exploration discovery into a mine. Exploration geologists should have an understanding of the more important metallurgical processes and the test work required for each process. The paper discusses the important metallurgical processes, the test work and sample requirements for each, and the costs and time requirements to accomplish the testing. The limitations of reverse circulation drill samples for metallurgical testing are discussed. The level of process definition required to support engineering studies: scoping, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies are also described.
