Kyanite. andalusite, and sillimanite are anhydrous aluminum silicate minerals, and they have the same chemical formula, Al2SiO3. Dumortierite and topaz are also classified as aluminum silicates although they contain boron and fluorine respectively. Mullite (a rare mineral named for its discovery site, the Scottish island of Mull) is produced when kyanite, andalusite, or sillimanite are heated. Synthetic mullite, also classified as an aluminum silicate, is formed by melting alumina and silica, bauxite, and kaolin or alumina, kaolin, and kyanite, depending on the type of synthetic mullite desired. These materials are either sintered in rotary, periodic, or tunnel kilns, or fused in an electric arc furnace. The world's largest producer of kyanite is the United States. Domestic kyanite is presently produced from one company at two sites in Virginia; Kyanite Mining Corporation mines kyanite from Willis Mountain and adjacent East Ridge in Buckingham County in the central Piedmont province of Virginia. Internationally, kymite is produced in Australia, Brazil, India, Kenya, Sweden, and Zimbabwe; the former USSR also produces kyanite (Fig. 1). Andalusite is produced by Piedmont Minerals Company, Inc. in the Piedmont province near Hillsborough, NC. Andalusite is also produced in France, India, the Republic of South Africa, and Spain (Fig. 1). Sillimanite is produced in Australia, Brazil, India, Spain, and the Republic of South Africa; the former USSR is also thought to be a major producer (Fig. 1). Some of the countries produce only for domestic use. Synthetic mullite, made by sintering and by electric arc fusion, is produced by Mulcoa (Mullite Company of America) in Andersonville, GA, and by Washington Mills Electro Minerals Corporation in Niagara Falls, NY. Annual world production of kyanite, andalusite, sillimanite, and synthetic mullite is approximately 672 727 tons (Potter, 1988). GEOLOGY Mineralogy Kyanite is a blue to light-green, triclinic mineral that occurs in long, thin-bladed crystals and crystalline aggregates in gneiss, schist, and pegmatites. The mineral has a hardness of 5 parallel to the long axis of the crystal and a hardness of 7 across the crystal. Andalusite is a yellow, brown, green, or red orthorhombic mineral that occurs in thick, almost square prisms in schist, gneiss, and hornfels. Gem quality andalusite exhibits a strong pleochroism; brownish-green in one direction and brownish-red perpendicular to it. Andalusite also occurs in placer concentrations where it has weathered out of rock. Sillimanite is a brown, pale-green, gray, or white orthorhombic mineral that occurs in long, slender, needlelike crystals in schist and gneiss. Chemical and Physical Properties Chemical and physical properties of kyanite, andalusite, and sillimanite are noted in Table 1. Kyanite is the only mineral that irreversibly expands when heated (calcined to produce mullite) and may offset the shrinkage of most ceramic or refractory ingredients when heated.

The investment involved in any communication system represents a considerable sum. Even though it is desirable that the system work properly each and every time it is called into use, some failures are bound to occur. Most failures, however, and especially those that occur most frequently, are due to poor installation techniques. An extra hour spent at an installation site can save many maintenance trips and many frustrating hours of system troubleshooting. Typical faults likely to cause communication outrage are Pager phone systems Poor splices aggravated by corrosion. Strain relief not provided. Drip loop not provided. Incorrect branch connections. Overloading the circuit. Poor battery connections. Improper wire size or type. Lightning strikes. Improper placement of wire runs. Carrier phones Mounting transceiver near load resistors or other sources of heat. Tracks not electrically bonded. Cable abrasion due to poor mounting location. Disconnected battery. Poor mechanical installation. Each installation should be well planned. After an installation is completed, the technician should ask the question, "What can go wrong with this unit or line?" Remember the adage, "Whatever can go wrong, will." Preventive measures taken during installation will pay off in the long run. 6.2 Pager Phone Installation The pager phones used in many underground coal mines are battery-operated, party-line telephones with provisions for loudspeaker paging. The system is usually two-wire, nonpolarized, and operated by self-contained batteries. Many of the individual units are certified as permissible. 6.2.1 Mounting Pager phones are designed to be mounted on an upright support at the desired location. For convenience, the phone should be mounted 5 feet above the floor where there is no obstruction to using the handset or removing the cabinet front cover for servicing or battery replacement. In low-coal situations, a suitable height for installation should be selected convenient to the normal operator's position at the site selected. About 12 inches of free space on each side of the phone should be provided for cabinet access. The phone should be protected against direct exposure to dripping water and should not be allowed to rest in a puddle of water. The mounting location should be convenient to a work location and have a safe, unobstructed area for a worker to stand and use the phone. The phone must be in a location where the worker will not be in the path of moving vehicles or falling debris. Each telephone is normally well insulated, but it is still good practice to provide an insulating mat or dry planking for the user to stand on.

This paper provides certain Southeastern coal-burning utilities with an economic strategy for complying with the sulfur dioxide emission standards set firth by the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. The strategy takes advantage of the occurrence of vast quantities of manganese nodules on the Blake Plateau offshore Georgia and the Carolinas, a commodity which as been proven to be a highly effective dry sorbent of sulfur dioxide. Using existing technology, manganese nodules could be mined and transported via barge directly to power plant sites, where they would be used as filter material for cleaning sulfur dioxide from the effluents of coal-fired power plants. Completely sulfated filter material could be treated for the extraction of by-product metals such as cobalt, copper, nickel, and manganese. The strategy may well be enhanced by the occurrence of ore grade phosphate rock in the same area of the Blake Plateau. This phosphate rock could be simultaneously mined to effect a reduction in production costs if it is found to be suitable for use as either a direct application fertilizer or as an acidulated superphosphate fertilizer. The manganese nodule-based strategy offers a retrofitting solution for existing power plants that would minimize the capital costs for compliance with the Clean Air Act Amendments and has the added advantage of providing a number of other metal or fertilizer by-products.

Realizing an invention of Professors Queneau and Schuhmann, Lurgi GmbH has developed a radically new lead smelting technology, which was demonstrated on a ?30,000 tpy scale at Berzelius Metallhiltten GmbH between 1981 and 1986. Designed to treat all grades? of lead concentrates as well as complex secondaries, the novel QSL-Process applied one bottom-blown, refractory-lined long reactor and comprises two basic steps: Continuous oxygen smelting of the green charge is followed by continuous carbothermic slag reduction. Four firm orders and a number of serious inquiries from major lead producers confirm that the QSL-technology has convinced the industry of inherent process advantages. These include low investment and operating costs, flexibility and environmental acceptance. In the fall of 1986 Cominco Ltd. decided to erect a 120,000 tpy QSL plant at the site of the Trail lead smelter. Feed materials will consist of lead concentrates and zinc leach residues. The designed QSL reactor has a total length of approx. 41 m, and working diameters of 3.74 m for the oxidation section and 3. 24 m for the reduction section .. Separate gas offtakes on both sections will enable to? reduce the sulfur dioxide gas volume, and to recover a mixed zinc-lead oxide fume. Operation of the QSL reactor will start end of September 1989. First results will be presented.

The Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) announced plans to shut down production at the remaining two potlines at its Point Comfort, Texas primary aluminum smelter due to the increased costs of natural gas. Total capacity of the facility, which had been partially closed since 1976, was 185,000 tons per year representing 3.6 percent of current capacity in the United States. There were practically no price movements in March on 99.5 percent aluminum ingot, with producers at 53¢ per pound and dealers, 48¢-48.5¢. BISMUTH The March selling position of U.S. producer metal was held at $3.50 per pound. In contrast, east coast dealers and traders adjusted their quotes from $2.55-$2.60 to a wider range of $2.40-$2.60.

This report describes development and demonstration of an upgraded stench fire warning system for underground wines. Current systems, which have been used since before 1920, release an ethyl mercaptan mixture into the mines' compressed and/or ventilation air during emergencies. Miners, when smelling ethyl mercaptan, evacuate the mine according to predetermined plans. These systems, while simple, have problems with safety and reliability. The upgraded system overcomes these problems. The system uses a different stench agent, is less toxic, less nauseating, and less corrosive than ethyl mercaptan. These combined with the feature of thiophane not reacting with iron oxides, makes the upgraded system safer and more reliable. The system also uses a combination of two simple principles: a standpipe with pressure balancing to provide a constant head, and a sized orifice to control the rate of release of the stench agent. This system enables the mine to release the agent for a longer period which provides better coverage and to ensure that miners will not be exposed to potentially toxic concentrations of the stench agent. The system is easy to operate, requiring only the turning of two 1/4-turn ball valves. The upgraded system has been successfully tested during two evacuation drills at an underground uranium mine. Using three injectors (one on the compressed air line and one on each of two intake air shafts), the system exhibited significant improvements in warning times over the mine's existing system. This report provides a detailed description of the system design and its demonstrated performance in two mine demonstrations.

This report deals with the factors which should be considered in evaluating a placer deposit and selecting a dredging system for mineral recovery. Overall dredging feasibility and the design of dredging systems are reviewed. Excavation methods, each with its advantages and disadvantages, are compared. Direct operating costs, both original and updated, of gold dredges with bucket capacities of 6 to 18 cubic feet are included. Costs vary with digging depth, changes in environmental conditions, and physical characteristics of the placer, all of which affect excavation rate and recovery. The costs, updated with appropriate indexes, should be used only as guidelines to evaluate potential dredging projects with similar characteristics. The relation of direct dredging costs to annual production is graphically illustrated by a family of curved envelopes that span dredge sizes from 2-112 to 18 cubic feet. A curve fitted to the data expresses the relation of direct costs to annual production for 151 dredge-years.

"IntroductionThe mining industry has made slow but steady progress toward the automation of mineral processing plants over the last 35 years. The stimulus to automate is associated with important economic and hidden benefits, so that today, the latest in instrumentation and technology is being employed.This chapter assesses the status of instrumentation justified economically, defines levels of control and certain fundamentals of feedback control loops, describes typical sensors employed in concentrator circuits, summarizes control strategies employed therein, and briefly highlights trends in integrated plant control.Current Status of AutomationAs early as 1948, the mining industry began to show interest in automation, probably because of its close association with the petroleum industry. By 1958, some regulatory control had been achieved in various sections of a concentrator, particularly in crushing circuits. Successes were attributed primarily to the reliability of sensors employed in the corresponding control scheme. By 1961, computers had appeared on the scene, initially, for data logging purposes.From 1958 to 1965, very few new control strategies had been implemented. Guidelines in vogue at this time appeared to be:- Install proven automation, unless a good instrumentation department exists at the concentrator.- Do not bite off too much instrumentation at one time.- Do not purchase on price alone; instrumentation must function in the concentrator environment.- Do not purchase automatic control equipment to be fashionable.Such guidelines were employed1 because of a lack of: (a) quantitative process knowledge, (b) reliable primary sensors, (c) initiative to try something new, (d) trained personnel, and (e) understanding that older concentrators could justify automation in many situations."

Vermiculite is the name of a group of micaceous minerals characterized by their property of exfoliating when heated and thereby increasing many times their original volume. The resulting product has excellent heat-and sound-insulating properties, is used as a lightweight aggregate, and has numerous other industrial applications. Deposits of vermiculite occur in areas of pre-Cambrian rocks of the Llano uplift of central Texas, particularly in Burnet and Llano Counties. Because of the growing economic importance of vermiculite products, the Bureau of Mines undertook a detailed investigation of several deposits in Llano County. This investigation was completed in February 1947. The work comprised topographic surveys of five deposits, drilling with a 4-1/4 inch Parmanco power auger drill, and laboratory evaluation of samples. 342 drill holes, aggregating 4,905.5 feet, were completed, and 377 samples were taken. Laboratory evaluation of the vermiculite comprised expansion tests on both crude and beneficiated samples. The products obtained were compared with commercial-grade vermiculite from Montana.

Operations covered included all State metal mines using substantial quantities of water and all concentrators and smelters. Also included in the survey were 8 operations in the nonmetallic group; 22 in the plating, metal-fabricating, and metal-forming categories; 1 public-utility power company; and 6 water companies. The extent of the water shortage in Arizona is reflected in mineral- industry water-use practices, in the high cost and low quality of water used at many operations, and in the stringency of State control of well drilling and pumping. Many mineral-industry operations are among those users most seriously affected by the uneven water supply.

Explosionproof electrical enclosures for coal mine face equipment have been of the same basic design for many years without significant change. Characteristics for potential improvement were investigated through interviews, visits to mines and studies. Improved safety, health and productivity were the goals. Areas identified for improvement included rapid venting of pressure build-up due to an internal explosion, quick and easy entry or removal of cable entrances, and a quick and easy cover removal for rapid component access. Concepts were identified and evaluated, and the more promising devices were fabricated and tested. Encouraging results from initial tests led to further design refinement and establishment of design guidelines. These design guidelines for a pressure vent and for an elastomeric grommet type cable entry are described along with the testing used. An application for an experimental permit was requested from MSHA. After test and evaluation experimental permit #396 for evaluation in an underground coal mine was granted.

The oil and gas drilling industry is the largest user of "functional" industrial minerals for well drilling and completion. (Functional industrial minerals can be defined as those used for performance characteristics rather than composition.) This industry's use of industrial minerals involves complex mining, processing, and distribution of products. The cost of these products at the well site reflects the complexity of distribution to typically remote locations and the cost of service. Table 1 illustrates the use of functional industrial minerals by the drilling industry. The total tonnage shown is almost 2 1/2 times larger than the 3.3 Mt (3.6 million st) of kaolin used by the paper industry for filling and coating, another major use for functional industrial minerals. Drilling fluids are an indispensible part of a drilling operation. These fluids perform several functions simultaneously. They cool and lubricate the drill bit, remove formation cuttings, increase the specific gravity of the fluid to counteract formation fluid pressures, provide a filter cake on the wall of the drill hole to prevent drilling fluid loss to the formation, protect the porosity of producing zones, and prevent reaction of the formation or formation fluids with the drilling mud. When porosity of a formation exceeds the ability of the drilling fluid to form a wall cake, it is referred to as lost circulation. Because these fluids are being constantly formulated for changing formation conditions, they require a skilled technician or drilling mud engineer on the site at all times. Drilling fluids are composed of oil or water as the liquid phase, and industrial mineral products and chemicals to control chemical and physical properties. The basic function of viscosity and suspension result from the use of gelling clays and chemical and mineral dispersants; specific gravity of the mud is adjusted with mineral weighting agents; filtration control is maintained by clays and various natural and synthetic polymers; platey minerals and scrap products are used for controlling lost circulation in porous or fractured zones; salts are added to the mud to inhibit shale and clay swelling; chemicals are added for pH adjustment, prevention of corrosion, and as scavengers for formation fluid components. Because of the clay component, drilling muds have rheological properties different from conventional fluids, behaving as Bingham plastic fluids as opposed to the Newtonian behavior of water and oil. Newtonian fluids will begin to flow with the application of any force, however small. Bingham plastic fluids require a finite force or shear stress (yield value) before flow begins. Thixotropy is another property of clay-based drilling fluids. At rest they form a gel structure that suspends the weighting agents and rock cuttings. These gels break down when a finite force is applied and circulation is restored. At the bit where shear rates are the greatest, the viscosity or resistance to flow decreases, so hydraulic pressures and pumping costs are minimized. A drilling rig provides a means of rotating a hollow pipe attached to a cutting bit. A mud pit or tank is used for mixing the drilling mud and its components. INTRODUCTION One basic design feature utilized in all caving and sublevel stoping techniques is the drawpoint. These draw- points may be located on sublevels when using sublevel caving methods, or may be located at the floor pillar when using block caving, sublevel stoping, or vertical crater retreat methods. How the drawpoint is designed and developed, how the ore is withdrawn from it, and how the ore is hauled to the shaft or portal encompasses the loading and hauling function. Historically, predominate loading and hauling equipment for caving and sublevel stoping has been scraper slushes, air powered overshot loaders, and rail mounted train haulage. All of this equipment has two common constraints. 1. The equipment locked into specific work sites and is not easily shifted to another work site. This constraint can often lead to low utilization and low productivity of the equipment. 2. The equipment is designed to work in the horizontal plane, which requires that the various horizontally-oriented working levels be connected by vertical raises. Vertical development by means of raises is not only increasingly expensive, but also is not well adapted to movement of large equipment into the s topes. In the last 20 years, two revolutionary labor saving concepts have become common in caving and sublevel stoping. 1. Long-hole drilling, which has mechanized the development of the drawpoint extraction structures as well as the actual stoping and undercutting. 2. Vertical access by means of trackless ramps between levels, and the consequent use of rubber-tired vehicles not only for loading and hauling ore, but also for the rapid movement of men, material, and equipment into the stopes. The introduction of trackless mining systems for loading and hauling has not been easy. Mine planners have had to re-orient their thinking to the larger operating space required by trackless equipment. Larger access drifts have necessitated reconsideration of mine layouts to insure proper ground support. Spiral ramp developments were often laid out on slopes steeper than the equipment could negotiate economically. Mine operators had to accept the added responsibility of roadway maintenance, water removal, increased ventilation, and more technical mechanical maintenance. As the mine operators enthusiastically embraced the superior productivity of trackless mining systems, they some- times disregarded opportunities to combine the older types of equipment with trackless vehicles to maximize productivity at lowest cost. In order to gain a proper perspective on this problem, it is necessary to review the various techniques of loading and hauling and to become more aware of the advantages or disadvantages that each system or combination contributes. LOADING Loading consists of two functions, (1) primary loading from a drawpoint and (2) secondary loading into long- haul system, a truck, train, or possibly a belt conveyor. Mine planners have four basic loading systems available to fit various operating conditions. These are, (1) gravity, (2) scrapers, (3) rail-mounted loaders, and (4) trackless loaders. Each system can produce optimum results under specific conditions. Gravity Loading Gravity loading is probably the oldest system in general use today.

The fourth annual Mine Rescue Evaluation program was held in conjunction with the 1995 Institute convention at Crested Butte, Colorado. The Mine Rescue committee is chaired by Lynn Busskohl and is but one of 16 such committees of the institute. In 1995 seven teams participated in the program. They were BHP Minerals, The Coteau Properties Company, Decker Coal Co., The Falkirk Mining Company, Kerr-McGee Coal Corporation, Sabine Mining Co. and Western Energy Co. [ ] Professional evaluators who provided challenging scenarios for the near 60 persons were Jack Knight of Pensacola, Florida; Dave Medick of Northwestern Resources, Jewett, Texas; Joe Nugent of Idaho Springs, Colorado and Jack Peleaux of Innovative Access, Evergreen, Colorado. Each team was comprised of seven members and one trainer representing the states of Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Texas and Wyoming. This committee challenges the incoming Colorado vice president to locate a team for the 1996 program in Durango, Colorado. Five different scenarios were presented the first day of evaluation and three the second. Each team was given the pertinent information to solve the problem as they assembled at the site. The realistic industrial related scenarios closely simulated the stress of actual rescue incidents and were going on simultaneously. Each team was unaware of the circumstances until arriving on the scene. Lynn Busskohl presented an overview of the Mine Rescue committee work at the Monday Institute welcome session and invited all attendees outside to view the various pretend rescue operations. Valuable suggestions were made by the team of evaluators following each scenario. These teams are providers of immediate rescue and medical care for accident victims at their respective properties. The members are prepared to act with immediate and professional knowledge to save lives and prevent further injuries. [ ] Many donors financially assisted with the 1995 program. They are: Blattner Constructors; Butler Machinery Co.; CMC Rescue, Inc.; Galls, Inc.; General Equipment; PMI-Petzel Distribution, Inc.; SafetyMaster; Skedco and TIC of Wyoming. An adder to the 1995 convention was golfing on Saturday, June 24 for three foursomes. This may become an annual event if there is sufficient interest. Team meetings, tests and swap meetings were attended by all participants during the Friday thru Monday program. A fun competition took place after lunch Monday followed by a training session. All events were chaired by Lynn Busskohl. On Saturday evening, June 24 a reception for all mine rescue participants and spouses who had advance registered for the social event. The RMCMI Board of Directors was invited to attend and meet with the teams. As convention attendees, all mine rescue committee members attended the Monday night country western reception and Bar-B-Q with their families. This was followed by an adult western dance evening. The Mine Rescue committee looks forward to a 1996 return to Tamarron near Durango, Colorado which was the site of the first evaluation program. Plans call for all convention housing to be at Tamarron.

The record of the largest magnesium plant in the country utilizing sea water as a primary raw material stands as another victory in the struggle for large-scale production of pure chemical elements from the oceans. Bromine was the first element to be economically and commercially recovered when, in 1933, a six million pound per year unit was built on the Atlantic Coast near Wilmington, North Carolina, by the Ethyl-Dow Chemical Co.' The bromine was reacted with ethylene to produce ethylene dibromide, a necessary associate of tetraethyl lead in ethyl antiknock fluid. Within eight years that plant was doubled and redoubled, and another large unit was put into operation at Freeport, Texas, taking bromine from the Gulf of Mexico. In 1940, in fortunate anticipation of the impending demand for magnesium and the limitations of the production from natural brines, the Dow Chemical Co. turned again to the sea, and designed and erected a plant at Freeport to produce 18,000,000 lb. of magnesium per year from sea water.2 In March 1941, two months after the new plant had been put into successful operation, construction of an 18,000,000-lb. Government-financed addition was started. Late in 1941, as a part of the $400,000,000 defense program intended to produce 600,000,000 to 700,000,000 lb. of magnesium per year, Dow was asked to build and operate for the Government a 72,000- ooo-lb. plant near its original plant at Freeport. Within a few days after the Japanese made their attack at Pearl Harbor, preparation of a site was started at Velasco, Texas, for the construction of the Texas plant of the Dow Magnesium Corporation—the largest known magnesium plant utilizing sea water as its raw matcrial. Less than six months after the first piling was driven, urgently needed magnesium was in steady production. Five months later, the plant had exceeded its rated capacity. It remained above rated production until the general magnesium curtailment was applied to Government-owned plants in September 1944. Credit for the construction and operation record of the Dow magnesium plant must be divided among the efforts of a very determined group of men, an extremely favorable location, and a simple process. It is with the two latter aspects of the plant that this article will deal. The site for the new enterprise was chosen near Velasco, Texas, on property bordering the Brazos River at a point approximately 6 miles inland from the original magnesium plant and 7 miles inland from the Freeport Harbor on the Gulf of Mexico. This location was far enough away from the operating units to reduce both interference from construction and the vulnerability of closely bunched manufacturing operations to the then feared air attack. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Henderson mine utilizes a highly mechanized, continuous panel-caving system to extract ore from a deep, massive, molybdenum deposit. The mine site, lo¬cated 80.5 km (50 miles) west of Denver, is situated at 3170 m (10,400 ft) above sea level in a steep valley on the eastern side of the Continental Divide. The mill site, located on the western side of the divide, is linked to the mine via a 15.5-km (9.6-mile) railroad tunnel. Mine production is scheduled to reach 27 215 t/ d (30,000 stpd) from the uppermost production level. This pro¬duction rate will have been reached within the four years following an intensive ten-year preproduction development program. A second production level, due to come on stream in later years, will expand production capabilities to 31 751 t/d (35,000 stpd). The mine, which employs approximately 2000, has blocked-out ore reserves of 220 Mt (242 million st) at an average grade of 0.42% MoS2. Geology The Henderson deposit is composed of two partially overlapping ore bodies that lie 1080 m (3600 ft) beneath the peak of Red Mountain. The ore bodies are entirely within a Tertiary rhyolite porphyry intrusive complex that has intruded Precambrian granite. The de¬posit is elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 670 x 910 m (2200 x 3000 ft). In section it is arcuate with an average thickness of 185 m (600 ft). The top of the deposit is at an elevation of 2610 m (8700 ft) while the lower limits range from 2340 m (7800 ft) on the west to below 2100 m (7000 ft) on the east. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore bodies and consists of molybdenite and quartz in random to subrandom, intersecting, closely spaced veinlets. Cavability RQD (rock quality designation) * values measured from Henderson drill core and compared with the RQD values from the Climax and Urad block-cave mines in¬dicated that the Henderson ore would cave but with difficulty and that a high percentage of the cave ma¬terial would be blocky. Initial caving experience shows the Henderson ore caves easier and with greater frag¬mentation than was indicated by the RQD values. Pos¬sible reasons for this are: 1) The greater lithostatic load at the Henderson has a greater effect on caving and fragmentation than anticipated. 2) The relief of confining pressure due to caving action and brittleness of the rock is enhancing breakage. Mine Layout The Henderson mine layout was designed from its inception for a large-scale, rubber-tired, continuous panel-caving mining system. The ore body is vertically divided into three major mine levels (Fig. 1). The top¬most level (8100 level), which is 2469 m (8100 ft) above sea level, is the current mine production level. INTRODUCTION The decontamination of a uranium mill site is principally an earth moving task. The task can be completed effectively and efficiently by selecting the proper earth moving equipment and using that equipment within its particular constraints for decontamination work. A considerable backlog of experience concerning earth moving equipment selection and use was acquired during the decontamination work conducted at the former Shiprock, New Mexico, uranium mill site. This experience was acquired by trial and error while decontaminating over a wide range of depths and different types of terrain. Many different types of excavation equipment were available to the Shiprock decontamination project because the Navajo Engineering and Construction Authority (NECA) heavy equipment operator's school was doing the decontamination work and a variety of equipment was needed for training. The equipment is described and its general use for decontamination is discussed. Its on-the-job use for decontaminating the Shiprock millsite is presented. [EARTH MOVING/ANCILLARY EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION AND DECONTAMINATION CONSTRAINTS] Tractor-Scrapers The most commonly used scraper is the bottom-dump type because it is highly mobile and can dig, carry, and spread loads. In this type a tractor is connected with a yoke to a scraper bowl (Figure 1). The bowl is essentially a rigid box that pivots around the rear axle, opening to the front. A hardened steel knife, or bit, is attached to the leading edge of the bowl. When scraping, the bit penetrates and forces the earth overlying the bit edge into the scraper bowl as the scraper moves forward. When the bowl is full, it is closed by lowering a closure or apron against the cutting bit. The load is dumped while moving, by raising the apron and forcing the load from the bowl with a crowd, or ejector. The height of the dumped load is controlled by adjusting the bit height when dumping. Scrapers of this type generally do not have enough power to scrape up loads unassisted. Loading assistance is generally provided by a crawler tractor that pushes from the rear against the scraper's push block. Some scrapers are made self-loading by adding an additional engine for the extra power needed for the load pick up. Another commonly used self-loading scraper uses a loading elevator (Figure 2). The elevator consists of two roller chains carrying crossbars. The elevator is rotated when scraping and the crossbars cut the earth above or in front of the bowl bit, forcing the load into the scraper bowl. No apron is used on elevating scrapers. The load is dumped by partially retracting the bowl floor and pushing with an ejector. Scrapers have some undesirable characteristics when used for decontamination work. Since commissioning in 2005, First Quantum Minerals’ Kansanshi Mine in Zambia has produced over three million tons of copper and 1.8 million ounces of gold from a deposit with highly varied copper mineralization. The processing plant is complex with three independent flotation circuits, gold gravity concentration, atmospheric and high pressure leaching, solvent extraction, and electro-winning. For the first ten years of operating the plant, copper mineralogy was inferred from total copper and acid soluble copper assays, and various misconceptions developed about the mineralogy which impacted operational strategy and project decisions. In 2015, an on-site mineralogy section was set up with an Automated Scanning Electron Microscope, the Zeiss MinScan. This instrument has provided detailed mineralogical data that have debunked some of the mineralogy myths that had developed, highlighting the key underlying issues affecting processing performance. This has enabled the development of projects targeting losses of specific copper minerals in defined size classes, unlocking significant value. This paper describes some of the early misconceptions around mineralogy at Kansanshi processing plant, outlining projects that have benefitted from understanding copper mineral distribution. Learnings from Kansanshi are to be applied at other FQM sites, with a similar mineralogy program being set up at the Cobre Panama project. INTRODUCTION The deposit Kansanshi Mine is located in the North Western Province of Zambia, and it has been the largest copper producer in Africa for over a decade. The deposit occurs within a broad northwest trending antiform that can be traced for 12 km, hosted in a zone of complicated faulting, abundant vein injection, breccia development and down-dropped rock units that lies within Kansanshi’s mining license. The copper mineralization within the deposit is predominantly vein-hosted, although some is strata-bound, occurring in thin bands and veinlets parallel to foliation, and some is disseminated associated with albite-carbonate alteration (Gray, 2015). Supergene enrichment has led to significant variety in the copper mineral speciation. This alteration is complex, and has not followed the text-book principles with a neat layer of supergene mineralization overlying fresh hypogene ore. Rather, the occurrence and extent of oxidation and supergene enrichment is highly irregular throughout the deposit, sometimes occurring at significant depth in localized pockets and along fault lines. Gold mineralization tends to follow the copper within the deposit, but it is dominated by coarse-grained, free-milling native gold. The extent of copper oxidation – measured as the fraction of total copper that assays as acid soluble – is used to classify ore into three main ore types, named Sulphide, Mixed, and Oxide, which are then fed to three different primary crushers for processing in independent circuits.

Increasing global demand for coking coal has initiated several new coal mine developments in northeast BC. These developments are able to take advantage of the currently under utilized infrastructure that was put in place during the 1970?s and 1980?s for the Quintette and Bullmoose coal mines; which includes the Town of Tumbler Ridge, a 1,000km rail line to the coal terminal at Prince Rupert and a road system providing highway access to the town site. Coal within the two foothills regions of BC (north-east and south-east) is mined by open pit truck/shovel methods. Optimized mine plans require a thorough understanding of Rocky Mountain structural geology, attention for access in steep terrain, and a related understanding of the geotechnical conditions that control the stability of pit slopes and waste dumps. Thus there is a requirement to properly integrate mine planning with geotechnical engineering considerations. Many of the technical issues are well understood from experience during the past 30 years of Western Canadian coal mining. The challenge is to ensure that the mine plans are able to take full advantage of these lessons learned. The paper will focus on mine planning and geotechnical design issues to do with high angle-of-repose waste dumps and steeply bedded footwall slopes to illustrate the advantage of properly recognizing the important stability control issues during the early stages of engineering evaluations. Case histories from the existing and planned coal mining operations will be presented.
