Résumé Cent soixante (160) câbles d'ancrage ont été installés au toit de la rampe à la Mine-laboratoire de CANMET à Val-d'Or, Qué bec, Canada, pour prévenir toute dégradation suite à l'élargissement de la voie de roulage dans un secteur tournant à 180 degrés, communément appelé Virage Santa Barbara. Le roc à cet endroit est de nature bloqueuse et stratifiée, et son épaisseur au toit de la rampe est limitée à environ dix (10) mètres, le tout sous une couche de terrain meuble saturée en permanence. Le soutènement mis en place a été conçu pour former une zone de compression et supporter une strate de roc d?environ quatre (4) mètres d'épaisseur. Les critères de conception et les méthodes d'installation sont présentées. Un contrôle de qualité rigoureux a été effectué au moment de la mise en place du support, notamment en ce qui concerne la mise en tension des câbles eux-mêmes et la qualité du béton utilisé lors de l'injection. Des instruments de mesure seront mis en place sous peu pour dépister tout mouvement éventuel au toit de la rampe. Abstract Design and installation of an active mine ground support using tensioned cables at the Experimental Mine, Val-d?Or, Québec, Canada. One hundred sixty (160) cables were installed at the back of the ramp at the CANMET?s Experimental Mine located in Val-d?Or, Québec, Canada, to prevent any degradation of the ground after the enlargement of the roadway in a sector turning at 180 degrees, usually called Virage Santa Barbara. The nature of the rock mass in this area is blocky and stratified, and its thickness above the ramp does not exceed ten (10) metres. Eight (8) metres of soil, mostly saturated, cover the bedrock on top of the ramp. The ground support was designed to form a compression zone at the back, aimed to carry a strata of rock of around four (4) metres thick. The design criteria and the methods of installation of the ground support are described in the paper. A strict control of the quality of the grout used for injection and the tension placed in the cables was carried out during the installation of the support. Ground monitors will be installed soon, to detect any movement that could take place above the ramp.

"Mining has been a staple to technological advancement ever since the dawn of time. By harnessing the different physical and chemical properties that each mining commodity brings to the table, more and more innovation is developed and manufactured. As these non-renewable resources continue to be extracted, the industry as a whole faces a challenge in finding the next economical deposit as well as declining grade at the current operations. By means of pre-concentration, ore sorting aims to separate the barren material from the valuable ore to reduce energy consumption and tailings generation, while increasing the feed grade, concentrate grade, mill recovery, and revenue. In addition, ore sorting allows the modification of deposit geometallurgy in order to allow the creation of an optimal mill feed. This paper evaluates the applicability and challenges of ore sorting by utilizing the results from four different mines, and reviews them in detail. The mines include one underground and three open pit mines that are precious metal operations. In order to understand the applicability of ore sorting in these operations, initial rock-by-rock test results and different types of assays (atomic adsorption [AA], inductively coupled plasma [ICP], and fire assay) are utilized. Using the assay results, the grade recovery curves for ore sorting are generated and they are further improved by using and developing an ore sorting algorithm, which is discussed in this paper. The application and evaluation of ore sorting in greenfield and brownfield properties will also be discussed. The state of the art ore sorting technologies for both rock-by-rock and bulk sorting are also reviewed in this paper. The future technologies on the horizon, including different combinations of sensors, are explained. The sorting technologies include X-ray transmission (XRT), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), colour, infrared, electromagnetic, and laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS)."

"With more rigorous regulations being enacted in the mining industry, a need exists for cost effective and environmentally compliant technologies to remove selenium from mine impacted waters to ultra-low concentrations. Existing selenium treatment methods have high life cycle costs, introduce risks of acute fish toxicity, and produce biological waste residues that represent future liabilities. Furthermore, achieving selenium discharge limits of less than 4 ppb is a challenge for existing technologies. Selen-IX™ is a technology developed by BioteQ that selectively removes selenium from mine impacted waters to less than 1 ppb. The technology is purely physico-chemical and takes advantage of the basic principles of ion exchange and electrochemistry. Unlike conventional electrocoagulation that removes suspended solids and breaks emulsions or oxidizes heavy metals, the electrochemical process employed by Selen-IX™ relies on creating conditions where iron acts as a highly effective reducing reagent transforming selenium from a dissolved species into elemental selenium bound in a solid phase. The iron-selenium by-product of Selen-IX™ is an inorganic, non-hazardous and chemically stable solid. Due to their high iron content, the solids produced by Selen-IX™ are of interest to the steel making industry as a low cost feedstock. This offtake potential can not only reduce the life cycle cost of selenium removal by reducing disposal costs but more importantly, eliminate the risk of future environmental liabilities. In this paper, the basics of Selen-IX™ technology are presented along with results of successful piloting on streams from coal and copper-gold deposits.INTRODUCTIONVarious contaminants are released into mining wastewater during the extraction and processing of metals. One such contaminant is selenium. A naturally occurring element found in rocks and minerals, mining activities accelerate its release into the environment. Selenium in trace quantities is essential to all life forms but at higher concentrations it can be harmful, especially to aquatic life where selenium bioaccumulation can lead to reproductive deficiencies."

Platinum group elements (PGE) are often found in arsenide and sulfarsenide minerals as inclusions in copper-nickel bearing gabbroic rocks. Major losses of platinum in flotation have been attributed to the poor recoveries of the arsenic minerals. Flotation characteristics of a synthetic nickel arsenide and arsenopyrite were studied through rest potential and oxidation rate determinations, surface analyses, and micro-and batch-flotation tests. The use of nitrogen during grinding and flotation together with copper activation improved the PGE recoveries from Duluth Complex ores. The flotation behaviors of the sulfarsenide minerals are still unresolved. The role that electrochemical interactions play among arsenides, sulfarsenides, sulfides and grinding media on their f10atabilities is discussed.

"Developing a greenfield mining project is a complex exercise: doing so in an increasingly volatile, uncertain, and ambiguous global economy adds significantly to this complexity. In the context of an elevated cobalt price, this paper outlines the metallurgical and process development of the Mutoshi copper–cobalt project for copper cathode and cobalt hydroxide production in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Chemaf has a long production history on the Copperbelt, a region widely perceived to be tough to operate in. This history stretches back to 2001, during which time the company has developed two copper–cobalt processing facilities. The experience gained in the development and operation of these two facilities has been used extensively in the Mutoshi copper–cobalt project. The metallurgical test work, process design, and project delivery approach are presented. Additionally, the decisions taken to minimize risk and maximize upside to the project are discussed. IntroductionChemaf (Chemicals of Africa), a mining company located in Katanga province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has been operating since 2001 with two major copper– cobalt processing facilities: the Usoke and Etoile plants. In 2016, Chemaf acquired the Mutoshi mine, which belonged to Gecamines and had been explored by Anvil Mining since 2004 under a joint venture with Gecamines. Chemaf appointed African Mining Consultants Ltd (AMC) to undertake a preliminary economical assessment, then develop a JORCcompliant Mineral Resource estimate and finally a full life-of mine feasibility study. Both a Mineral Reserve and Mineral Resource were developed and the final life-of-mine feasibility study is to be published shortly. A metallurgical test work programme was initiated and carried out by Chemaf’s research and development laboratory with assistance from the Chemaf process team. After completion of the initial test work, Chemaf developed a process design criteria document for a 20 kt/a copper cathode and 8 kt/a cobalt in hydroxide production plant, followed by a flow sheet and supporting METSIM mass balance. As the drilling progressed, the plant design capacity was revised to 16 kt/a cobalt production. The life of the mine at this production rate is over 40 years."

A mobile-modular carbon adsorption mill design and operation for small to medium sized heap leach precious metal mines is presented. In the mobile-modular strategy, charcoal columns with adsorbed metal move from small strategically located carbon adsorption loading stations to a central stripping facility and back. The design has many advantages: 1) It scales-up from pilot plant to full production. 2) It has low capital requirements. 3) Operational costs are competitive with other systems. 4) Mill production can react quickly to changes in ore grade or property area. 5) The solution circuits are simple and easy to maintain. 6) Charcoal damage is reduced.

Small-scale mining operations are characterised by a large variety of equipment availability and a high level of operational flexibility. Mine planning is usually scarce or absent in small quarries in Brazil, and mine management generally focuses on daily operations. As a result, analysis of the effects of unit operations, such as blasting, over the whole mining process is often neglected. The goal of the following project was to study the effect of production blasting on loading and hauling times, secondary breaking times and primary crushing times at the Experimental Mine of the Research Center for Responsible Mining of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. The operations analysed included blasts that performed:under the average operational standard, defined in this paper as Case 1according to quarry standards, defined in this paper as Case 2.In order to establish the effects of blasting on the downstream process, three key performance indictors were used:The time taken to load the truck, when there is the need for material selection. Due to the fact that we do not have an operational baseline, the increase in time cannot be established, meaning that we must content ourselves with comparing the mean time in each scenario.The average time used for secondary breaking machinery.The time required for the primary crusher to fully process the load of a single truck. The results obtained indicate correlations between the coarseness of the blasted material and these operational times. Mining education in Australia has undergone another cyclical downturn over the past five years and several departments have been discontinued while others are still teetering on the brink of destruction. During this downturn Curtin UniversityÆs WA School of Mines (WASM) has managed to stay alive and well, but this has not been by accident. This paper outlines some of the strategies and experiences that have kept WASM in a strong position and offers hope to other departments and schools elsewhere that are still experiencing difficulty. This paper is also directed at all mining departments and schools that are certainly going to see it all happen again after the next mining boom turns to bust.

The deployment of Dragline machines in opencast coal projects involves huge capital expenditure as well as operating costs. The mine operators always endeavor to ensure smooth excavation of material by the Dragline machines while meeting the major objectives of safety, minimal disturbance to environment and optimal operating costs. Optimization of fragmentation through well designed blasts is fundamental in meeting part of the objectives is good fragmentation of rock or mineral proposed to be lifted by the Dragline machine. If the overburden lying over mineral is not properly fragmented, it may result in formation of ‘Toe’ the removal of which is the most arduous task in opencast coal mines. The mine operators always endeavor to achieve best possible results in blasting to ensure smooth operation of the high cost Dragline Machine. However, despite continuous efforts by the blasting engineers involved in bench blasting for the machine, the formation of ‘Toe’ is an ever nagging problem faced in large opencast coal projects eventually reducing the overall operational efficiency of mining.

Saturated and unsaturated fatty acids are used in the flotation of iron values present in iron ore. Among the several fatty acids, oleic acid and its sodium salt are widely used. To substantiate the flotation results, the quantum chemical calculations of a few such acids have been carried out by adopting the semi-empirical AM1 method. These acids have been further optimized in the presence of an iron atom. The electronic interaction of the polar carboxylic head group of oleic acid with the iron atom is higher compared to the other acids. Mount Isa Mines (MIM) Copper Concentrator currently utilises Agitair 120 banks for its roughing flotation circuit. Apart from a rotor change, the only other significant work completed to the Agitair banks since their installation and commissioning over 40 years ago has been a like for like refurbishment in 2016. The Agitair banks at the MIM Copper Concentrator currently utilise the Pipsa rotor design which progressively replaced the original Chile X rotor design in the 1980’s and 90’s in the copper concentrator. Since the development of the Pipsa rotors, modern rotors such as the Dorr-Oliver (DO) high shear rotors have been released to the market with proven recovery and concentrate grade improvements over previous rotor designs. The paper describes the advanced grinding control system implemented at Newmont Ahafo gold mine, Ghana in 2009 and 2010. It shows how the different components of the Advanced Process Control (APC) system cooperate for increasing plant performance. The SABC circuit processes hard rock from different pits mixed with a variable proportion of oxides. The control strategy is designed to address specific disturbances, including start/stops of pebble crushers, unavailability of oxides, changes in rock size distribution resulting from segregation in the stockpile, and changes in ore type and hardness. The system consists of an expert system per se with extensive use of fuzzy logic, supplemented by an online dynamic model of the process used as a soft sensor, a VisioRock? rock size measurement system over SAG mill feed before addition of recycled pebbles, and an AudioMill? system to analyze the SAG mill sound and detect impacts on liners. All these components are embedded in the same OCS© software platform, which, among other benefits, makes it easy to support the entire system remotely. The paper details the physical constraints and the variables that are manipulated. It describes the control strategy and the contribution of each component of the system. It also describes the project implementation and the performance of the system. In addition to a strong involvement and support of management, the very good acceptance of the operators has been facilitated by the remote access system that made it possible to immediately modify the system each time it was needed during the baby sitting phase. The system made it possible to increase gold production significantly through increases in tonnage and recovery thanks to a better control of the grind size through a stabilization of the secondary ball milling circuit and an improvement of the operating conditions of the classifying cyclones.

"This paper reports on the long-term operation of a particle density meter (PDM) at the Bloomfield coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP). This unit has been operating continuously for over three years, providing real-time data to the operators to allow the monitoring of flotation circuit performance. PDM outputs include slurry density, solids concentration on both mass and volumetric basis, and particle density. Knowing the average particle density of a stream allows for the optimisation of the process in real-time.The calibration of the solids concentration measurement device proved very difficult as the factory calibration techniques and existing laboratory analysis did not give accurate or reliable results. The solids concentration device had to be re-engineered and a new calibration method developed that gave accurate and repeatable results. Independent verification of samples taken from the PDM was undertaken as part of the trial process.The operational reliability of the PDM was a major point of investigation. The initial installation of the unit revealed issues with large, misplaced material of up to 20 mm periodically entering the unit, leading to feed blockages. The presence of these misplaced, oversized particles in the flotation circuit was resolved by installing innovative automatic back flush systems on the PDM.From a plant perspective the PDM has been an invaluable instrument that has enabled irregularities in the flotation circuit performance to be identified, which sampling had not and could not readily identify. This was achieved by close monitoring of real-time tailings composition on a minute by minute basis over short and extended periods. Variations in the tailings stream with respect to particle density and solids concentration were traced back to other issues in the plant. In addition, the PDM has allowed cell optimisation with respect to reagent dose rate to be improved. "Dispersoids play a significant role in the recrystallization and texture development for wrought Al-Mg-Si (6xxx series) alloys by inhibiting grain boundary motion. It is therefore important to understand the precipitation kinetics of such particles. It is the additions of Mn and Cr in Al-Mg-Si based systems that can lead to dispersoid phases being formed. These phases are currently thought to nucleate on ß’-Mg2Si via an intermediate semi-coherent precipitate. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) has been conducted to study the precipitation of a-Al(CrFe)Si and a’-AlCrSi dispersoids. Corresponding electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) has been used to distinguish the dispersoids. The volume fraction and size distribution of dispersoids has been measured as a function of distance across a grain. Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) has been conducted to study the inhomogeneity of elements in the cast structure and the effect on dispersoid precipitation. Dispersoid free regions have been observed in the microstructure correlating to regions depleted in the dispersoid forming elements.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg-Si (6xxx series) based alloys are increasingly being used in the automotive industry. The primary reason is to reduce the weight of vehicles, resulting in a reduction of CO2 emissions and increased fuel efficiency. The demand for 6xxx series is predicted to increase over the coming decade. Due to the high cost and CO2 emissions produced by raw extraction of aluminium, close loop recycling of these alloys becomes a more important process. However recycling of automotive alloys can be difficult due to pick up of impurity elements such as Mn, Cr and Fe. The addition of these elements can form dispersoid particles during early heat treatment processes. Although a controlled population of dispersoids is necessary to control the grain structure during thermo-mechanical processing, a significant change to the dispersoid population due to a composition change could profoundly influence the final microstructure, affecting the final properties of the material. More research is required on the precipitation and effect of additional minor alloying elements; in order to increase the 6xxx series alloys recyclability."

Pistachio nut shells, an agricultural waste biomass, and Lewatit TP 214, a commercial sorbent, were investigated as adsorbents for the adsorption of platinum from dilute hexachloroplatinic acid solutions. Before the pistachio nut shells were carbonized, adsorption percentage was 65%, whereas Lewatit TP 214 ensured almost 100% adsorption. However, after the pistachio nut shell was carbonized at 1,000° C under an argon atmosphere, the platinum adsorption (%) increased two-fold. The effects of such parameters as sorbent dosage, contact time, temperature and solution pH on adsorption were studied in detail in batch mode. The adsorption equilibrium data were best fitted with the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacities, Qmax, at 25° C were found to be 38.31 and 33.22 mg/g for the carbonized pistachio nut shell and Lewatit TP 214, respectively. The adsorption of platinum on both sorbents was found to be described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The results indicated that the activated carbon prepared from pistachio nut shells can be effectively used for the removal of platinum from acidic solutions.

Stability analysis and design of open pit slopes is generally based on an assessment of rock cores and rock exposures on surface or in underground workings. Until recently, core for such assessments has been readily available from exploration drilling programs. In recent years, many exploration programs have reduced the amount of coring and rely more heavily on less expensive rotary or percussion drilling programs where drill cut-tings are sampled for geological evaluation and assay. This paper describes a technique whereby costs of the geotechnical investigation are reduced by using rotary percussion drilling information to assess geotechnical properties of the rock mass. A limited number of core holes are required to establish basic relationships between the mechanical properties of core and the characteristics of the percussion chips. These properties are used as a basis to extrapolate the coring information to encompass the entire area of the rock mass for which percussion drilling information is available.

The determination of the surface area which may be impacted by underground mining is an important consideration in subsidence engineering. A number of parameters have been utilized to identify this influence area, most notably the angles of draw and break. This paper discusses the implications of selecting an appropriate "damage angle" for defining a potential damage area due to mining, within which surface structures may be impacted Furthermore, the influence of both mining and geological factors, such as mining width and depth and overburden lithology, on this angle is examined, using the Surface Deformation Prediction System (S.D.P.S) software. Finally, recommendations are given for applying these concepts in subsidence control.

"Chromates are known to induce tumors (1, 2), mutations (3), and DNA damage (4-6). However, the underlying biochemical mechanism(s) is (are) not fully understood (6). Recent studies have indicated that hydroxyl (·OH) radical may play an important role (7-11). The mechanistic studies of Cr(Vl)-related ·OH radical generation in biochemical systems have shown the reaction of a Cr(V) species with hydrogen peroxide (H20 2 } through a Fenton-like mechanism to be one of the important steps (9-11): Cr(V) + H20 2 - Cr(VI) + ·OH + OH-. (1)In biological systems the Cr(V) species are generated via the reduction of Cr(VI) by a variety of components, such as microsomes (12), mitochondria (13), mitochondrial electron transfer complexes (14), and at least three flavoenzymes (glutathione reductase (GSSG-R),3 lipoyl dehydrogenase, and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase) (9, 15, 16). In the case of flavoenzymes, Cr(V) formation is accompanied by the reduction of molecular oxygen ( 0 2 ) to H20 2 • The Cr(V) species then reduces H20 2 to generate •OH radicals and Cr(VI) (16).To understarid the mechanism by which Cr(V}-generated ·OH radicals cause cytotoxicity, Aiyar et al.
