"This paper presents the results of in-situ tests conducted on a set of under-reamed piles in a silty sand deposit. Three piles (i.e. vertical, vertical with one bulb and vertical with two bulbs) of diameter 0.2 m were cast upto a depth of 5 m. The pile cap had four foundation bolts cast into it so that a mechanical oscillatormotor assembly could be mounted centrally on it. The oscillator-motor assembly was used to generate purely sinusoidal dynamic forces, in either horizontal or vertical directions. For both horizontal and vertical vibration cases, it was observed that (i) the natural frequencies decreased with an increase in the excitation force level, (ii) for the same excitation level, the natural frequencies as well as the maximum amplitude of vibration are almost the same irrespective of the pile geometry i.e. number of bulbs in the pile, indicating that the full pile length is not being excited. For the vertical vibration case, the soil-pile stiffness at frequencies, before resonance, were observed to be higher than those at frequencies after resonance. In the horizontal vibration case, the stiffness of the soil-pile system was found to be decreasing with an increase in the excitation force level. The damping ratio was found to be increasing with an increase in the excitation force level.INTRODUCTIONUnder-reamed piles are piles, normally upto a depth of 6 m, with one or more bulbs along the pile stem. These have been used for structures like transmission towers, structures on expansive soils etc. for a very long time, however it is only in the last 30 years that dynamic response of a pile has been studied. Evaluation of dynamic soil-pile interaction is a very complex problem as the conditions and properties of soil are highly variable and unpredictable. Various models and approaches have been suggested by various investigators for evaluating the dynamic soil-pile interaction problem, but most of them are based on the assumptions that the behaviour of soil is linear and the soil surrounding the pile is strongly adhered to it. But in practice, it is not so. The soil surrounding the pile is always somewhat loosened and undergoes some deformation when a sinusoidal load is applied. This causes the soil-pile system to behave nonlinearly.In earlier studies by Novak, (1974), Novak and Aboul-Ella, (1978) etc. a linear elastic behaviour of soil was assumed. This approach was very useful in understanding the mechanism of soil-pile interaction to a large extent. Subsequently various models were suggested like the lumped mass models with nonlinear discrete springs, dashpots and friction elements Matlock et al. (1978), weak cylindrical zone around the pile model Novak and Sheta, (1980), ideal boundary zone model with non-reflective interface, Han and Sabin, (1995) etc. These approximate solutions give an idea about the mechanism of dynamic pile-soil interaction to a large extent. However, in reality both separation and slippage can occur due to the formation of a weak bond at the contact surface between the soil and the pile when a dynamic load is applied. In addition, the soil column adjacent to the pile experiences large deformations under dynamic loads and thus behaves nonlinearly.Some computer aided model studies on the dynamic response of under-reamed piles have been reported, however, very few insitu dynamic tests on under-reamed piles are reported. Dynamic tests on piles were carried out by Novak and Grigg (1976) on small scale single piles and pile groups in the field. Similar field tests on small scale piles were conducted to study the nonlinear behaviour of a single pile and a pile group under strong harmonic excitation by Han and Novak (1988), Han and Vaziri (1992), Burr et al. (1997), Manna and Baidya (2010) etc. The majority of these experimental studies were focussed on the response of the specific pile groups and compared with the results of a single pile. Rare earth elements (REE) and critical minerals are increasingly becoming more important in our technological society and are used in many of our electronic devices (such as cell phones, computer monitors, wind turbines, etc.), batteries, and magnets. Measuring REE and critical minerals in ashed coal approximates the REE and critical minerals in the fly or bottom ash remaining after coal is burned at a power plant, where REE and other critical minerals could be leached. In New Mexico, there are 26 coal fields in Late Cretaceous rocks in the San Juan and Raton Basins. These rocks are being characterized as part of the DOE’s CORE-CM (Carbon Ore, Rare Earth, and Critical Minerals) program. Higher concentrations of REE (as much as 2103 ppm total REE) are found locally in ashed coals from the basins. More chemical and mineralogical analyses are required to fully understand the distribution and origin of REE in these deposits. As the demand for REE increases because of increased need and short supplies, the dollar value per ton of ore rises, enhancing deposit economics, perhaps even from coal.

In this presentation, a low carbon high strength steel microalloyed with Nb and Ti was processed by thermo-mechanical controlled process (TMCP) containing two stages of controlled rolling. The austenite with various grain sizes was obtained by austenitizing this hot-rolled steel at different temperatures. And the effect of austenite grain size on bainitic transformation was investigated in a dilatometer to reveal microstructural change. The results showed that the microstructure of the hot-rolled steel was mainly composed of granular bainite, lath-like bainite, and martenite/austenite constituents (M-A constituents). With increasing the austenitizing temperature, or increasing the austenite grain size, the microstructure was changed from granular bainite to lath bainite. When the steel was reheated to a lower temperature of 860 ºC, a relatively higher start temperature (Bs) was measured for bainitic transformation. This was mainly caused by the formation of solute-depleted region in the austenite and the promotion of the granular bainitic nucleation. The highest reaction rate occurred at austenitizing temperature of 1000 ºC with fine grain size, while the coarse austenite grain can lead to a sharp increase in the amount of bainite. An analysis was made on the kinetics of bainite transformation which was controlled by the volume diffusion of C atom.

Magnetic separation equipment has long been used to upgrade and beneficiate a wide variety of minerals and materials. Over the years, significant advances in both wet and dry magnetic separators have improved their operability and separation performances, broadening their use.But no one answer exists to the question: what is the right type of magnetic separator? For many minerals, including ilmenite, both process routes may be viable. There are technical, production, as well as economic reasons for choosing wet versus dry. However, recent developments illustrate that a new generation of wet magnetic separators is approaching performance once seen only in dry magnetic separation. With quality and production performance becoming similar, the choice between wet and dry magnetic separation is not as cut and dry as it once was.

Modem open cut and underground mining in the tropics inevitably expose partially weathered and unweathered rocks to oxygen and water, leading to weathering and the release of solutes and often acidity as well. Historical monitoring data can demonstrate these phenomena. Three case studies from open cut mines in the north of the Northern Territory illustrate the deterioration in quality of pond water receiving drainage from waste rock dumps. The potential for deterioration of water quality was not recognised in many mine Environmental Impact Statements prepared and accepted in the 1980s. The examples documented indicate the importance of adequately planning for this near inevitable process. Retrofitting a mine water management system to 'no' or minimal release can be very difficult and expensive, and may not be feasible, leading to downstream pollution. The characterisation of acid and solute production potential of ore and waste rock, and improved dumping strategies and water management are very important to minimise the environmental impact of mining in the tropics.

Major components of soil were tested for their ability to attenuate cyanide. Feldspar, kaolinite, plagioclase and bauxite are found to degrade cyanide at an appreciable amount mainly through adsorption. A soil near a mining site in northern Nevada was studied in detail using a tall column. Many species of cyanide were anlyzed to determine the mechanisms of the reactions of cyanide with soil. Volatilization, adsorption, oxidation, precipitation and complexing were quantitatively identified, being 5 to 10, 11.7, 4.2, 7.3 and 4 per cent of the total cyanide added, respectively. It is found that the oxidation of cyanide to cyanate is due to the catalytic effect of nickel and copper leached from the soil. Precipitation of metal-cyanide complexes occurred at low pH values.

A measurement-based ground control management system, commonly employed in coal mines, has been successfully implemented in a UK potash mine operating at a depth of over 800 m. This system includes the routine deployment of telltales in roadways throughout the mine to mitigate against the risk of large-scale roof falls and the deployment of detailed ?design monitoring? instrumentation for ongoing design verification. The routine monitoring systems used in coal mines have not been, to date, commonly applied in potash mines, despite the similar, variable weak geology and associated ground control hazards. Monitoring information from the site indicates that telltales can be deployed to monitor roof conditions, with action levels based on differential rates of strain, as opposed to absolute movement.

In 1907, the Oklahoma Portland. Cement Company built a small dry process plant at Ada, Oklahoma, then Indian Territory. This plant was later acquired by the Ideal Cement Company of Denver, Colorado, who in 1918 built a new wet process plant along side the old dry plant. The older plant was later shut down .and eventually razed. In 1955, the Ideal Cement Company decided to increase the production at its Ada, Oklahoma operations. After many studies it was decided to build a complete new plant along side the old, near the site of the original 1907 plant. .The new plant was to have a. production of three million barrels annually while the plant then in. operation had an annual production of two and one quarter million barrels

The satellite-based global positioning system (GPS) has significantly changed the way site operations are carried out in surface mining. The GPS has impacted safety, productivity, fleet efficiency, and maintenance practices. However, no comparable global localization system exists for underground mines. This paper discusses recent work in the application of ideas from the mobile robotics research community to the problem of real-time vehicle positioning in underground drift networks. Related previous work recently focused on the creation of globally consistent 2D maps of underground environments that possess sufficient detail to be used for underground localization. Our current work entails the development of a GPS-like system for mobile mining equipment, with results given from both laboratory and field experiments.

The selection of a suitable nitrate removal process depends on a variety of site-specific chemical and environmental issues. The dominant technologies for nitrate removal include biological denitrification and continuous countercurrent ion exchange. The decision to apply either of these technologies, or both together, depends on the nature of the waste water to be treated. Factors that affect the selection of the biological system include the feed composition and feed temperature. Ion exchange nitrate removal systems are less sensitive to the feed composition but require disposal or destruction of the concentrated pregnant eluate. The paper discusses Tetra's continuous countercurrent ion exchange technology (CCIXTM) and fixed film biological reactor, Denite°. The treatment of the ion exchange pregnant eluant is also discussed.

Since the mid-1970s, samples of airborne and waterborne fibrous particulates have been collected in the area of the Northshore Taconite Ore Processing Facility by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (PCA), and the University of Minnesota. Indirect sample preparation has consistently been used although other aspects of the sampling methods and sites have varied and analytical procedures were altered over time as more accurate and precise microscopy methods were developed (i.e., phase contrast optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy). In the mid-1970s, levels of airborne fibrous particulate in the Silver Bay area averaged from 0.00030 to 0.03 f/ml. This level was significantly greater than levels of similar particulates in the St. Paul, MN area, although two of the Silver Bay sampling sites, considered individually, did not indicate levels of fibrous particulate markedly different than that seen in St. Paul. More recent sampling data (i.e., 1990?2001) indicate mean concentration of airborne fibrous particulates (amphibole-like fibrous particulates) of 0.0020 f/ml with a range of values from 0.0001 to 0.0140 f/ml. Such levels are not significantly different from those seen in other non-urban environments in the US and Europe. Concentrations of fibrous particulates in water samples were higher in the mid-1970 when iron ore tailings were being deposited in Lake Superior, but since the tailings have been deposited on land waterborne levels of fibrous particulate in the Beaver River have remained relatively constant averaging in the range of 7.5 MFL. This level is only slightly in excess of the current EPA drinking water standard for fibrous particulates. Review and consideration of this data is important in determining the potential health risks associated with airborne and waterborne fibrous particulates in the areas of the Northshore Taconite Ore Processing Facility. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. "SynopsisGibb Consulting Services was contracted by Eskom Line Engineering Services to conduct an investigation to determine the absolute displacement to date and infer the current rate of displacement of unsurveyed colliery backfill.At the test site, where a 400 kV power line is to be constructed, neither the surface nor the backfill material had been monitored and it was not possible to state whether the surface will be subject to future settlement that may compromise surface infrastructure. Therefore indirect methods of estimating current and future displacements needed to be found to act as a proxy for a comprehensive long-term settlement monitoring exercise and provide a reasonable estimate for the settlement that has occurred in the decades of mining.The innovative solution was to recover essentially undisturbed core from backfill using a sonic drill rig and use the measured dry density values from the samples as a proxy for the rate and absolute displacement in the backfill.The success in obtaining an essentially undisturbed backfill core and the clear relationship of the backfill density with age and depth allowed the conclusion to be issued that the power line infrastructure can be constructed over the backfill; with a warning that once the water table recovers after mining ceases some collapse settlement may occur.With this method, the amount of settlement can be predicted and, if proven conclusively, provides a way to confidently release huge areas of currently waste ground for future surface infrastructural development.IntroductionIn coal mining, it is normal mining practice to backfill the newly mined-out voids with the excavated waste rock and soils. As there is no requirement for the mining companies to uniformly compact the spoil or accurately monitor surface or inter-backfill displacement, these backfilled voids are prone to differential compaction and consolidation settlement. They are therefore avoided as sites for future surface infrastructure work, especially for linear structures such as roads, railways, and power lines."

It is difficult to separate scheelite especially from fluorite with fatty acid collectors because the adsorption mechanism of these collectors occurs through chemisorption of the oleate ion onto the mineral surface. A simplified flotation process using Pb-BHA complexes was developed to replace the energy-inefficient Petrov’s process of using a fatty acid, increasing the recovery of scheelite and reducing the cost. The relationship between surface chemical properties (crystal chemistry, solubility, and Zeta potential) of minerals and flotation by using a fatty acid or Pb-BHA complexes was studied in detail to provide new insights into the selective separation mechanism. The results indicate that the scheelite surface exposes more O atoms than Ca and that they are negatively charged due to the anisometric dissolution of Ca and WO4, which provides the possibility for separation using selective interfacial reaction. The FTIR and Zeta potential results indicate that both chemical and electrostatic adsorption play an important role in the adsorption of Pb-BHA complexes on the scheelite surface. The XPS results of the atomic composition and binding energies confirmed the presence of the adsorbed Pb-BHA complexes and that O and Ca may be the active adsorption sites. Therefore, scheelite was able to be collected by forming either a Ca-O-Pbcollector or W-O-Pb-collector (BHA). However, fluorite was only able to be collected by a fatty acid collector and colloidal [H2SiO3]n -, and a high temperature was needed improve the selective desorption of the adsorbed fatty acid collector by forming Ca-[H2SiO3]n - on the fluorite surface, resulting in serious problems in industry. However, the Pb-BHA complexes significantly contribute to improving the recovery of scheelite minerals, simplifying the flotation process, and circulation of the residual reagents and water. The new process has been applied in Shizhuyuan Mine, and improved the recovery by almost 10%.

Contemporary approaches to safety management appear to be failing short of meeting its mark in improving mine safety. This is evidenced by the high workers compensation, high incidence rates and fatalities. Evidence from high-risk and complex organisations points towards safety culture as being important in improving site safety. In more recent years resilience engineering has been touted as a new and innovative way of managing safety. This paper reviews and synthesises previous literature on safety culture and resilience engineering. It then highlights methods that can be used to measure safety culture and resilience engineering, and explores similarities and differences between complex organisations and gold mining to identify opportunities for more innovative approaches to improving safety in gold mining operations through safety culture and resilience engineering.

The Rush Creek district of Marion County, Ark., has had a more or less continuous record of zinc production over the past 40 years. The ore has come from many small mines working on oxidized and semi-oxidized deposits found in the Everton formation where that formation forms the present surface rock. Prospecting has been restricted to the hillsides above the creek levels, the actual ore outcrops being the guides. Little attention has been paid the possible sulfide zones. In August 1942, the United States Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines recommended exploration of the Powell and Cotter formations, which underlie the Everton, for which purpose the Survey had previously located 18 proposed drill-hole sites in geological structures that seemed favorable to are deposition.

The explosion hazard presented by methane gas in coal is confronted daily in the mining industry. Research has developed several viable methods for gas control in addition to conventional dilution by ventilation. Such methods include the drilling of horizontal or cross-measure boreholes from a mine opening and vertical boreholes hydraulically stimulated in advance of mining or for gob gas drainage. The long-term production history of five gas drainage installations was studied. Three installations were completed in the Pittsburgh Coalbed: two in West Virginia and one in Pennsylvania. The remaining installations were completed in the Mary Lee Coalbed in Alabama and the Sunnyside Coalbed in Utah. The types of drainage methods utilized included horizontal and vertical boreholes. The length of production studied ranged from 860 days to 36 years. The cumulative production from the five sites was in excess of 155 Mm3, representing a significant volume of gas.

"There has been considerable output over the last three decades from the social sciences concerning man and his working environment. In the mining industry at large, however, authoritarian, hierarchical control systems remain the norm, and it can be argued that something less than optimum effectiveness in terms of both productivity and worker satisfaction has resulted.Recently (/975), Campbell Chibougamau Mines Ltd. devised a most interesting organization and incentive system that links the underground production of a standard ton of mined output at controlled grade to an incentive payment scheme. A parallel scheme in the mill complex is based on maximizing recovery of copper and gold from available feed. A key part of both minsystems is the formation of groups who have considerable autonomy, particularly when compared to the still prevalent traditional mining industry relationships between the worker and supervisory levels.This paper traces the development of Campbell Chibougamau's system . Attention is drawn to qualitative and quantitative measures of the success of the method through the commentary of those miners involved in the scheme, and by reference to the favourable records on productivity, absenteeism, safety, turnover and grievance activity.IntroductionPyramidal or hierarchical management control systems, coupled to piece-work incentive schemes, predominate throughout Canada's underground mining industry. Although specific details of such systems vary from site to site, they , are generally understood and accepted as fact by the majority of the work force.Normally, a front-line supervisor (shift boss) directs a number of workmen and assigns them to tasks and working locations commensurate with their abilities, knowledge, training and skills. This front -line supervisor may direct or supervise from as few as 12 to as many as 75 or more workmen. He issues orders according to his assigned production objectives and ensures that these directions are fulfilled in accordance with standard mine practice . Several shift bosses are usually directed by a mine foreman or mine captain. The mine captains report to a general foreman or directly to the mine superintendent or his assistant, depending on the size and scope of the operation."
