A stronger U.S. economy stimulated the domestic mineral sector in 1994. Metals demand was spurred by robust U.S. motor vehicle sales, while demand for major industrial minerals rose in response to highway and building construction. Domestic mineral and material demand is expected to increase in 1995, particularly if interest rates do not restrain the building industry and international monetary exchange rates remain advantageous to U.S. automobile manufacturers. Additional information on events, trends, and issues in the mineral and material sector is presented below and in the commodity sections that follow. Overall Performance Processed materials of mineral origin produced in the United States during 1994 increased to an estimated value of $360 billion. Domestic output of raw nonfuel minerals in 1994 was estimated at $34 billion, about 6% more than that of 1993. The value of U.S. minerals production has increased in 29 of the last 34 years.

The explosion hazard presented by methane gas in coal is confronted daily in the mining industry. Research has developed several viable methods for gas control in addition to conventional dilution by ventilation. Such methods include the drilling of horizontal or cross-measure boreholes from a mine opening and vertical boreholes hydraulically stimulated in advance of mining or for gob gas drainage. The long-term production history of five gas drainage installations was studied. Three installations were completed in the Pittsburgh Coalbed: two in West Virginia and one in Pennsylvania. The remaining installations were completed in the Mary Lee Coalbed in Alabama and the Sunnyside Coalbed in Utah. The types of drainage methods utilized included horizontal and vertical boreholes. The length of production studied ranged from 860 days to 36 years. The cumulative production from the five sites was in excess of 155 Mm3, representing a significant volume of gas.

A salt dome appears to provide the basic medium requirements for the excavation of the 315 foot diameter, unsupported spherical cavity at a depth of 2700 feet required by the AEC in a proposed "decoupling" experiment. Tatum Salt Dome was a natural choice for a site because more geological and hydrological information has been accumulated on Tatum than any other salt dome on the Gulf Coast. The Tatum Dome is a mile in diameter, roughly flat topped, nearly cylindrical in shape and has some overhang at the top. The salt stock has nearly vertical layering of alternating bands of salt and anhydrite. In the vicinity of the dome, adequate fresh water for solution mining is available in surface streams and in subsurface aquifers. A saline aquifer is available for brine disposal. A tentative cavity location was selected near the center of the dome which meets the design criteria established by the AEC.

"Most underground mines require heating or cooling systems to meet health and safety standards in the working areas. In regions where daily or seasonal fluctuations of environmental conditions exist, these systems tend to be over-sized and operate at low average load factors, which increase both investment and operating costs. One possible approach to reduce the temperature variations of the fresh air supplied to the mine, and so reducing the investment in large heating or cooling systems, is to use rock as a thermal regenerator or thermal storage system. Packed rock beds act as thermal inertial units, damping the atmospheric temperature oscillations to provide a more constant fresh air temperature. However, although regenerators exist in some mines, and packed bed rocks have been studied in detail in solar thermal power applications, there is a lack of tools to design new and sufficiently large storage systems of this kind. This work fills the existing gap by presenting a methodology to design and evaluate the impact on the ventilation systems of these regenerators. The method is validated using existing rock bed systems found in the literature and illustrates possible designs for small and large size regenerators in both hot and cold climates.1 INTRODUCTION “ It is quite amazing how often answers to extremely complicated problems can be obtained in this way, by using greatly simplified models of the real situation for the purpose of calculation.” Whiller, A. in private communication to J. Motivation Most underground mines located in regions with extreme climatic conditions require the thermal pre-treatment of the fresh ventilation airflows, whether for heating or cooling. Heating commonly is needed in sites with sub-zero temperatures and is usually effected by direct or indirect burning of natural gas or propane. Alternatively, cooling is required in areas with hot temperatures, or in mines with high underground thermal loads where the fresh air at ambient temperature cannot provide enough refrigeration. Thus, when the ambient air conditions cannot provide by itself enough thermal power to ensure safe underground working conditions, a heating or cooling plant is required, which involves a considerable equipment and operation cost."

"The Facility for Accelerated Service Testing (FAST) program has been involved in numerous rail wear tests since its inception in 1976. A number of specialized tools have been developed to aid in assessing specific performance parameters including gauge face wear, head height loss, metal flow, head area loss, hardness, and welded rail end batter. The layout of a test site, including position in curve, number of measurements per rail, and train operation must be properly controlled/monitored to provide valid wear comparisons.This paper will provide an overview of the above-mentioned tools and techniques. In addition, a summary of recent test results from FAST, including information on head hardened rail investigations, will be provided. A set of guidelines for establishing a revenue service field test site will also be provided to aid users in performing evaluations of their own.IntroductionBackground of Rail Wear Testing at FASTThe Facility for Accelerated Service Testing (FAST) located at the Transportation Test Center, (TIC), Pueblo, Colorado has been involved with testing of rail since program initiation in 1976. A huge data base of rail wear information has been gathered from FAST operations under a variety of rail metallurgies, lubrication conditions, and measurement techniques. Attempts at obtaining meaningful rail wear information from early (1976-1978) FAST rail wear data was hampered by two main factors: (I) measurement techniques were insufficiently accurate for the amounts of wear being experienced, and (2) the lubrication was not sufficiently controlled to obtain uniform conditions for a sufficient measurement time period.Subsequent test periods were operated with improved measurement techniques and controls that ensured statistically valid data. The policies and conditions that permit accurate rail wear assessment will be reviewed and outlined in this paper, along with some specific TIC and field examples that will allow the user to improve the accuracy of a field rail test on their own operating property."

"The model has been developed to simultaneously predict both transformation product portions and mean ferrite grain size from the same common · principles as a result of the austenite decomposition during any cooling path of dual phase steels. The transformation products considered are polygonal ferrite, pearlite, bainite and martensite. The model is based on the classical equations of nucleation-growth theory and also contains some empirical parameters. The chemical driving forces for nucleation and composition of elements at the phase interfaces are derived by computation thermodynamics. The empirical parameters related to the model were determined on the basis of a series of austenite transformation dilatometric curves and grain size measurements for continuous and interrupted cooling of several steel types. The model is aimed to predict phase transformation in the complex cooling conditions of the run-out table of the hot strip mill at YOEST-ALPINE STAHL LINZ GmbH as a part of the computer aided system for prediction and on-line controlling of the mechanical properties of hot-rolled strip.IntroductionThe term ""dual phase steels"" is used to refer to a steel consisting essentially of a dispersion of martensite in a fine-grained ferrite matrix. These steels are of increasing technological interest since they provide a better combination of strength and ductility than any other conventional steel sheet material. The strength is important because it offers an opportunity to produce lighter components, while good ductility is needed to permit easy forming of components. It is generally recognized that martensite plays an important role in determining the strength level of dual phase steels. A full understanding of the role played by the phases in determining such characteristics requires investigating in more detail how to optimize the martensite level of such steels, while maintaining good ductility remains the subject of continued research in the industry."

"A limited series of laboratory batch flotation tests was conducted on a suite of calcium-ferrite-based slags made in laboratory smelting trials. The smelting tests were conducted as part of a wider CSIRO Minerals’ research project aimed at developing a single-stage continuous copper-making process. The objective of the flotation work was to maximise copper recovery and iron rejection from slags made in the process.The slags treated included a reduced low copper slag, an oxidised high copper slag composite, and a very reduced low copper self-pulverising slag. The copper content of the slags varied from 2.9% to 14% Cu. The copper was present as metallic copper, oxide copper and copper-calcium ferrite phases with the phase mix related to smelting conditions. The slags were crushed, ground, wet-screened at 355 or 210 µm to remove coarse metallic particles of copper, and floated at natural pH (about pH 11) using reagents and conditions appropriate for the selective recovery of the copper phases.In rougher/scavenger tests on the reduced low copper and self-pulverising slags copper recoveries above 92% were obtained with copper enrichment ratios varying between 2.3 and 2.9. For the oxidised high copper slag copper recoveries were poorer - only 47% of the copper was recovered with an enrichment ratio of 3.3. The presence of the slow floating copper-ferrite phases in the slags limited further (selective) copper recovery. Ageing of the high copper slag, that is, a significant delay between grinding and flotation, resulted in a deterioration of the copper flotation response.The critical parameter affecting the flotation of copper from direct converting slags was found to be the form of the copper in the slag. Slags containing a higher proportion of the more desirable form of copper for flotation will provide the best opportunity for high copper recoveries to be consistently obtained, allowing improvements in the economics of the overall copper-making process."

On the occasion of the 14th Mill Operators’ Conference and marking 40 years since the first one was held in Mount Isa in 1978, it is fitting to review the history of the Conference and its development over that time.The first 10 Conferences were irregularly held at three to four year intervals, with 9 of these in regional centres of Australasia. It is only since 2012 that the Mill Operators’ Conference has become a regular biennial event, alternating with the MetPlant Conference.The number of people attending the Conference has more than doubled to 470 delegates at the 13th one in 2016. It has outgrown its regional beginnings.Papers presented to the previous Conferences have been analysed according to commodity, country of origin, technology and theme plus the affiliation of the authors to discern any trends that may assist in planning the future events.Suggestions are made as to how the AusIMM might wish to arrange its mineral processing/metallurgical conferences.Recent changes to the structure of the Conference providing a more meaningful experience for the delegates and increasing their interaction and involvement should be vigorously pursued.CITATION:Munro, P D, 2018. "ABSTRACTThe wetting behavior of coal has been determined in the presence of nonyl and octyl series of nonionic surfactants containing polyethoxy groups of different sizes. The wetting behavior was determined by a modified Walker technique and contact angle measurements. The results show that the wetting rate of coal varies with coal rank, structure of the hydrocarbon chain and number of ethoxy groups in the hydrophilic group of the surfactant. A close relationship has been observed between the wetting rates and the short-time advancing contact angles.INTRODUCTIONNonionic surfactants are used in many applications to improve wettability of solids. They can be used as dispersing agents [ 1 ] or dust suppressants [ 2-5 ] and to control the flotation, flocculation, filtration and flowability of particulates. This study was undertaken to study the effect of a series of nonionic surfactants on the wetting behavior of coal. Two series of surfactants, namely, ethoxylated nonyl and octyl phenols were used. The nonyl phenol series contains a linear hydrocarbon chain containing nine carbon atoms ( CH3( CH2 )8-C6H4,- ( OC2H, ) n, where n is the number of ethoxy groups) . The octyl phenol series contains a branched hydrocarbon chain containing eight carbon atoms ( ( CH3 ) 3CCH2C ( CH3)2-C6H4- ( OC2H4) n ).Initial wetting rates — modified Walker techniqueWalker et al. [ 6 ] developed a sink test to determine the wettability of coal particles. In this technique, coal particles are dropped individually onto the surface of surfactant solutions of different concentrations, and the most dilute concentration in which coal would sink ""instantaneously"" is determined. This technique is a variation of a procedure initially developed by Draves and Clarkson [ 7 to determine the effect of surfactants on wettability of cotton fibers. In this procedure commonly known as the Draves test, the concentration of a surfactant required to give a 'sink time' of 25 s is determined.Other investigators have used slight variations of the Walker method to study the wetting of fine particles [ 8-12 ] , by measuring the time for wetting a given amount of powder. There are differences in the manner in which the time of wetting is measured, however. Some investigators measure the time for the last trace of coal to disappear [ 8,11 ] whereas others determine the time for the vast majority of particles to sink [ 10 ] . Some investigators report a wetting rate [ 11 ] which is a value calculated on the basis of the time for the 'last traces of particles to sink'. The differences in choice of criterion for wetting can result in different values for wetting rates as illustrated in Fig. 1 which is based upon our measurements of the amount of powder wetted as a function of time. The procedure for wetting rate measurements is described in the next section. The technique in which time for disappearance of the 'last traces of particles' is determined gives the smallest value for the wetting rate, while the technique in which the time for wetting of the 'vast majority' of particles is determined will give intermediate rates. The terms 'last traces of particles' and 'vast majority of particles' are usually not defined explicitly and can lead to large differences in wetting rates measured by different investigators. Since our measurements show that the wetting rates for an assembly of powder decreases with time, we have used the initial wetting rates to compare the wetting behavior of coal in solutions of different surfactants."

During the 1980 decade, the rapid price increase for flake graphite has generated a high degree of interest for the discovery and the development of alternate occidental sources of supply in response to fluctuations in quality and availability from current producers. Alike many industrial minerals, graphite draws its complexity not only from its mineralogy and unique properties but also from the very large spectrum of industrial applications each calling for specific quality criterion. As new high technology uses are being developed, more rigid specifications will apply. Discovered during the latter part of 1988 by Mazarin inc., some 30 Km South of Fermont near the Quebec-Labrador border, the Lac Knife deposit was quickly identified as one of the world major long term alternate source of stable supply for this mineral. This paper also reviews the status of the project development as of late 1991, while updating previous papers published by Industrial Minerals1990 and Mining Magazine 1990.

The orange waste after lime water modification was converted into promising adsorbents for fluoride by metal loading reaction. The effectiveness and mechanism of fluoride adsorption on metal loaded orange waste gel from synthetic and real plating solution were investigated. Amount of zirconium(IV), aluminium(III), cerium(III), lanthanum(III), titanium(IV), vanadium(IV) and tin(IV) loaded on orange waste from aquearegia dissolution were evaluated to be 1.62, 1.16, 0.93, 0.95, 1.20, 1.12, 0.97 mmol/g respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of zirconium(IV), cerium(III), lanthanum(III), iron(III) and aluminium(III) loaded orange waste for fluoride ions were evaluated to be 1.74, 0.91, 1.07, 0.98 and 1.01 mmol/g from aqueous solution. The mechanism of fluoride adsorption by metal loaded orange waste was inferred to be ligand exchange reaction. Application of zirconium(IV) loaded saponified orange juice residue(SOJR) for real plating solution showed effective removal of trace concentration of fluoride down to the accepted standard. The negligible interference of co existing anions like nitrate, carbonate, sulphate and chloride makes zirconium(IV) loaded SOJR a promising sorbent for waste water treatment. The adsorbed fluoride from fluoride loaded zirconium(IV)-SOJR was effectively desorbed by using alkali solution for its regeneration. This work shed light on the potential application of metal loaded SOJR to remediate fluoride contaminated water for environmental relevance.

Geophysical methods are gaining acceptance in the evaluation of coal mine ground control condition. The use of in-seam seismic investigations has contributed significantly to the body of information concerning ground control feature identification and analysis. Seismic methods have been used successfully in locating voids, faults, fracture zones, roof and floor rock interfaces, and more recently in characterizing in-seam stress distribution. Seismic tomography is an effective tool in data interpretation for several of these applications, but as is the case with other engineering application of geophysical techniques, there are limits as to how much substantive information can be interpreted from a given data set. This paper discusses some of the applications of in-seam seismic geophysical tomography, and the limits to which the transformation from raw data to information should be taken.

Seismic monitoring systems for mining operations are being utilized more than ever before in the characterization of rock mass response to underground and open pit mining. This paper provides a review of the use of microseismic monitoring for rock mechanics applications at mines throughout the world. Some practical considerations for the installation of these systems are presented along with techniques for optimizing seismic array coverage. Case studies and installation examples are also provided. Recent applications of advanced seismic analysis techniques are discussed including the determination of event mechanisms, mapping of maximum peak particle velocity (PPV) and seismic hazard fields, and the use of source parameter data for large event re-entry protocol.

"The Renard Mine, 100% owned by Stornoway Diamonds, is located approximately 250 km north of the Cree community of Mistissini and 350 km north of Chibougamau in the James Bay region of north-central Québec. The project benefits from a large and growing resource, good mining conditions, strong social acceptance, a modest environmental footprint, and the development of direct-to-mine road infrastructure. Construction began on July 10, 2014; following the completion of a 946 million CAD project financing transaction. Now completed, the mine is the first diamond mine in Québec, and one of only six in Canada, employing approximately 500 people. First ore was delivered to the plant approximately 5 months ahead of schedule on July 15, 2016. Commercial production was declared on January 1, 2017. In general, the project ramp up has been characteristic of a type 1 McNulty curve. One of the challenges during production ramp-up was a redesign of processed kimberlite dewatering (replacing the dewatering centrifuge with two stages of hydrocyclones and a dewatering screen). A processing opportunity captured by Stornoway was the design and installation of an ore sorting facility which rejected free waste rock from the valuable host rock; kimberlite. Through tackling both challenges and opportunities, Stornoway has realised and is now exceeding their original design tonnage.PROJECT DESCRIPTION Stornoway Diamond Corporation (Stornoway) was established in 2003 resulting from to a plan of arrangement between Northern Empire Minerals Ltd. and Stornoway Ventures. In 2011, Stornoway acquired 100% interest of the Renard Mine. The construction of the Renard Mine began in 2014 and achieved full production in 2017 [1, 2]."

Water-powered jackleg rock drills, introduced recently in South African mines are reported to be more efficient, faster and more comfortable to operate than conventional pneumatic drills. A comparative testing of both drill types was performed in Quebec. Based on its results and time studies done in the mines, water-powered drilling has been reviewed with regards to drilling rates achieved, infrastructure needed, side effects, health and safety considerations. This study shows that the application of water-powered drills may help increase footage drilled and improve working environment, but under specific conditions. The examples of such applications are given in the conclusions.

Environmental experts face large and rapidly-increasing volumes of raw data obtained from environmental monitoring stations. These professionals must compile and analyze the data in a systematic manner to cost-effectively understand and minimize the impacts of mining. The shift toward desktop computing, combined with the downsizing of company staffs, has now more than ever created a demand for a modern, PC-based application for the storage, retrieval, analysis and presentation of environmental data. This paper discusses the general requirements of such a system, and points out specific ways in which such industry-specific software can provide convenient and useful access to the data. The software used to illustrate these features is the HydroDat program, developed by Western Water Consultants, Inc.

Until relatively recent times, virtually all gold was recovered by gravity and/ or amalgamation methods. Although such techniques are very effective on coarse gold, they become increasingly less useful for finer grains especially when the gold is partly enclosed in rock matrix. Throughout the nineteenth century a number of bonanza gold fields were found in the United States, South Africa, Australia and Canada. In every case the abundant supply of gold nuggets and coarse alluvial gold soon gave way to hard rock mining with its inevitable losses of fine gold in the stamp mill tailings. Continuing efforts to develop new technologies capable of dissolving gold from finely ground ore were eventually successful first with chlorination (the Plattner process) and subsequently with cyanidation. Even before the nineteenth century, however, European chemists such as Scheele and Berthollet were aware that gold could be readily dissolved in an excess of free cyanide(1). As early as 1840, a patent was issued to the Elkington brothers for the dissolution of pure gold in cyanide solution and its subsequent plating onto various metals, with or without an applied electrical current. In 1846, Elsner showed that oxygen was also required to solubilize gold or silver in cyanide media(1). Despite the fact that much work was done on the reaction of cyanide solutions with gold, a viable leaching process for gold ores did not quickly emerge although cyanide solutions were used to enhance amalgamation from the 1860s onward. Major problems were associated with the use of concentrated cyanide solutions; the costs of cyanide were excessive and it was difficult to recover gold from the concentrated media.

The development of large open surface fractures over mined-out coal longwall panels is the focus of this U.S. Bureau of Mines report. The research concentrates on defining the fractures characteristics and their controlling variables. The investigation was conducted at two mines in south-central West Virginia. All but one of the fractures are subparallel to the trend of the underlying longwall panel. One fracture is perpendicular to the trend of a longwall panel. Overall length of the fractures ranges from 60 to 900 ft. In cross section they are V-shaped, ranging from a couple of inches to 25 ft in width at the surface, but narrowing as they increase in depth. Fracture depth varies from a few inches to over 50 ft into bedrock. A vertical fracture or joint plane was observed in the bedrock at several open zones along the fractures. All of the fractures vary in elevation and do not parallel surface contours. The fractures are aligned with local joint trends, they correlate with longwall development, and they are situated in an increased tensional area over the mined out longwall panels. These observations indicate that the fractures are tensional openings along preexisting joint planes possibly triggered by longwall mining.

Dr. K. A. Clark: No one will doubt the statement of fact that, during drilling operations through the bituminous sand beds in the Mildred-Ruth Lakes area, the core-barrel was found to contain bitumen with minor amounts of sand instead of bituminous sand. But many will doubt the interpretation of this fact as meaning that beds of bitumen occur interstratified with the bituminous sand beds. They will prefer to hold faith in the laws of physics, which deny that sand will float on oil or that fluid under pressure will not flow away through a permeable medium, until it is proved that the appearance of the oil in the core-barrel was not due to circumstances surrounding the drilling of the bituminous sand beds. The implication of the interpretation that sand is floating on oil is clear and it is unacceptable. Bituminous sand is unconsolidated sand more' or less saturated with a viscous oil. It is as difficult to conceive of bituminous sand lying on top of a body of the viscous oil as it is to conceive of unconsolidated sand more or less saturated with water lying on top of a body of water. The only difference between the two concepts is that the oil is viscous whereas the water is fluid. Oil-soaked sand placed on viscous oil would, when released, sink through the oil slowly, whereas water-soaked sand would sink through the water quickly.

Preliminary results of an explosive fracturing-solvent injection heavy oil recovery experiment conducted by the Bureau of Mines at a shallow oil reservoir near Bartlett, Kans., are given. Three wells 35 to 50 feet apart were drilled to a depth of 360 feet, and an open hole interval from 300 to 350 feet in the Bartlesville Sandstone Formation was explosively fractured with 3,000 pounds of pelletized TNT in each well. Laboratory tests were made on cores obtained from these wells to confirm the suitability of using an aromatic-type solvent. Injection of a 74-percent aromatic solvent was begun into one well and continued intermittently for approximately 2 months. Crude oil production amounted to 29.6 bbl, or 11.7 percent of the total oil con¬tained within the three-well interwell zone.
