Approximately sixty, small, surface coal mines in Pennsylvania participated in a program designed to improve safety performance in the workplace. The method involved the use of safety sampling and observation to assess the safe standards of worker behavior and work conditions. Data were collected through the use of operation-specific, on-site safety records covering seven major occupational units. Workplace events observed (acts and conditions) were assigned a hazard classification; feedback, both immediate and delayed was initiated to improve safety performance. The experiences drawn from this pilot project have proven the need to continue to pursue this behavioral approach; however, a stricter methodology needs to be adopted in the collection and analysis of data.

This paper presents a waste rock treatment and rehabilitation program conducted at a metaliferous mine site in northern New South Wales from 2000–2013. It updates findings from 2005 for Program #1 (which examined acidity, leachable metals and tree growth in a control and three treated areas of waste rock) and includes new results for Program #2 (which examined acidity, plant uptake of metals and trace elements and tree growth in a control and four treated areas compared to undisturbed background levels) and Program?#3 (which examined the treatment and revegetation of submerged mine tailings and an exposed tailings beach).Program #1 showed low soil pH in the control area remained unchanged from years 1–14, and soil pH in the limed and capped areas was initially increased but fell back to starting levels within 12 months and remained low for 14 years. In contrast, soil pH in the Terra B area resulted in soil high pH immediately after treatment and increased in years six and 14 without further treatment. Tree height and density in 2005 and again in 2013 indicated acidity in the control, limed and capped areas suppressed tree height and density; however, in the Terra B area, revegetation in 2013 was comparable to undisturbed forest. Outcomes in the control, biosolids and three Terra B areas in Program #2 were similar to those observed in Program #1.Program #3 showed the submerged and exposed tailings initially had low pH and high concentrations of total and leachable metals before treatment, but these became non-leachable after treatment with Terra B. Revegetation was achieved on the tailings beach, with almost uniform colonisation of bulrush and common reed, along with bottlebrush and golden wattle; a variety of reptiles have also been observed on the revegetated tailings beach, along with migrating ducks, spoonbills and grebes.CITATION:Fergusson, L, Blair, D and Scutts, T, ?2014. This volume constitutes the final report for the Rescue Subsystem portion of the Coal Mine Rescue and Survival System program conducted by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation under contract to the United States Bureau of Mines (Contract Number H0101262 dated Jung 17, 1970). The program was directed by the Special Systems Department of the Westinghouse, Baltimore, Maryland facility. The basic objectives of the CMRSS program were to develop and test hardware to determine the efficacy of a variety of coal mine rescue and survival concepts and techniques. These concepts were drawn from two major- sources: the Request for Proposal from the Bureau of Mines and the final report on the Mine Rescue and Survival Study conducted by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE).

The last three decades have seen significant mining development in northern regions of Canada, where the freeze and thaw cycle of permafrost and the corresponding surface subsidence and heave represent a significant challenge to the design and maintenance of infrastructures. Identifying areas at risk is of great assistance to reduce the impact of this issue. Over the past ten years, Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) has been widely used to monitor ground surface deformation. With this technique, changes in phase between two SAR acquisitions are used to detect centimeter to millimeter surface displacements over a large area and with high spatial resolution. InSAR can be used as a tool to assist the siting and design of new infrastructure as well as highlighting the risk to existing structures in areas of unstable terrain. This paper presents the results of a project carried out by Effigis, which made use of SAR interferometry in the context of monitoring terrain and infrastructure stability in a northern mining environment that is affected by permafrost seasonal and long term changes. TerraSAR-X images acquired during two periods, August to November 2012 and March to October 2013, were used to measure the deformations and/or movement of ground surface, infrastructure and stockpiles caused by seasonal changes in permafrost extent in and around a mining site located in Nunavik, Quebec. The results showed that spatial and temporal distributions of surface displacements are in accordance with scientific and terrain knowledge. Some displacements were observed in loose soil areas while, as expected, none were detected in bedrock and rock outcrop areas. The areas most affected by active layer changes showed surface subsidence in the thaw settlement period. This study confirms that SAR interferometry has a great potential for operational applications related to risks induced by surface deformation in mining environments. It shows that this technique can be used to produce reliable maps of surface movement and monitor the vertical displacement of important infrastructure.

"SART technology is a useful tool for improving the economics of gold recovery from certain types of complex gold ores. SART liberates cyanide consumed by base metals such as copper, zinc and nickel, and enables the newly freed cyanide to be recycled to precious metals leaching while producing high-grade base metal sulphide concentrates for sale. The benefits of SART include the reduction in cyanide consumption, avoidance of cyanide destruction costs, minimization of risks of environmental non-compliance due to residues of cyanide destruction reporting to mine effluents, and generation of extra revenue from the sale of base metal concentrates. Concerns with SART typically include uncertainties around capital and operating costs and proper integration of SART into the overall metallurgical flowsheet. This paper presents two case studies addressing these concerns. The first involves actual costs of the full scale SART integrated into a gold heap leach operation and treating up to 500 m3/hr of leach solution at a mine in Mexico. The second involves field pilot testing and a preliminary cost estimate for integrating SART into a silver mine in Peru using Merrill Crowe.INTRODUCTION One of the current trends in the gold industry globally is the increasing importance of complex polymetallic gold deposits as discoveries of large Carlin type gold deposits become increasingly rare (Sceresini, 2005). The presence of cyanide soluble copper and zinc in complex gold deposits necessitates changes in traditional gold extraction metallurgical flowsheets. One of the tools available to the industry to help deal with interferences of cyanide-soluble base metals in gold extraction is the SART (sulphidization-acidification-recycling-thickening) process. SART breaks the weak acid dissociable (WAD) base metal-cyanide complexes, precipitates the metals as high-grade sulphide concentrates and makes the freed cyanide available for recycle. Although SART is a commercially available technology, it is still relatively new to the industry. Fewer than ten (10) full scale plants have been constructed in the past couple of decades. Some of these SART plants are small, most are located at remote sites, and the majority have not operated on a continuous basis. This has resulted in a general lack of information in the industry about the true costs, operability and metallurgical performance of SART. BQE Water has been involved in the design, construction, commissioning and operation of large scale SART plants in Mexico, Turkey and Chile and has conducted field testing programs as part of the technical assessment of SART integration into various metallurgical circuits. Having built and operated numerous plants utilizing selective sulphide precipitation of heavy metals, BQE Water has gained unique insight into the design and control of the sulphidization stage of SART to minimize costs and ensure high efficiency in cyanide recovery."

Geologic, geotechnical and hydrologic studies were performed for the design of 115 deep, large diameter drilled shaft reinforced concrete foundations (6 to 12 feet) to support tall steel monopoles for a new 13-mile long 230/69kV transmission line in southwestern Arizona. The subsurface conditions along the alignment posed a wide range of challenges for performing investigation and design studies. These conditions include saturated, loose granular flood plain deposits with generally low lateral capacity, potential ground loss up to 23 feet due to occasional river flow (scour and embankment loss), liquefaction impacts from nearby active fault seismicity that can generate magnitude 6.5-7.0 earthquakes, and unsaturated alluvial and eolian sand-dominated soils to full depth with low lateral capacity. All conditions will require significantly deeper than normal foundation embedment (depth ranging from 22 to 77 feet) and will present construction difficulty due to ground instability from groundwater and dry soil sloughing. A phased investigation was performed to accurately characterize the conditions for design and construction, and included performing a review of existing data, detailed field geologic reconnaissance, a limited number of standard exploratory borings (limited access), seismic cone penetrometer soundings (SCPT) in saturated soils to better understand liquefaction and strength loss potential, and hydrologic analyses to estimate scour/ground loss potential. This paper describes the site conditions, presents details on the investigation team’s approach, documents findings in relation to deep foundation analysis and design, and discusses recommendations for foundation construction to help in reducing risk.

Water in mining, mineral processing and metal production on a life cycle basis has been at the top of agendas for various industries, government agencies, research organisations, academic institutions and communities. As a result, a number of water footprint assessment methodologies have been developed. However, their practical applications in mining and mineral processing industries with specific case studies are still rare.A key objective of the Minerals Down Under Flagship is to contribute to the long-term sustainability of the Australian mining and mineral industries. Researchers in the Mineral Futures theme have developed robust assessment methods to evaluate the impact of mining and minerals technology development on the environment. The future of mining and the mineral industry is strongly linked with its sustainability - better water management strategies will need to be implemented.Life cycle assessment (LCA) has been a recognised method for measuring the environmental impacts of products, processes and services. It provides a scientifically sound method of comparing products and processes using a common basis and identifies so called æhot spotsÆ and opportunities for reducing environmental impacts. The water footprint of mining, mineral processing and metal production using an LCA basis is still scarce in the literature. Research methodology is now being applied in detail for copper, gold and nickel. A primary focus has been the relationship between ore grade and water use for which mathematical models are being developed. These types of models provide inputs for LCA of mining and mineral processing plants and can identify water saving opportunities through scenarios and process route analysis.CITATION:Northey, S and Haque, N, 2013. "Tremendous progress has been made in recent years towards developing computational tools that allow ready solution of most common rock engineering problems, with amongst the most advanced of the tools focusing on evaluating engineered openings within Synthetic Rock Masses. These new codes have the potential to allow much more realistic design, but they must not be used without careful calibration – prior to – during and – post completion of any modelling. This paper explores some of the pitfalls of inadequate data collection and suggests more emphasis be given to calibration. Guidelines for minimum levels of parameter data are suggested for improving application of basic to sophisticated modelling codes.INTRODUCTION & BACKGROUNDTremendous progress has been made in recent years towards developing computational tools that allow ready solution of most common rock engineering problems. The degree of sophistication now possible with some of the available codes allows one to tackle extremely complex problems that were not thought tractable even a decade ago. Indeed, generation of synthetic numerical rock masses, based on discrete fracture network representations that closely mimic actual rock mass conditions, such as are shown in Figure 1, is today relatively straightforward, and not as user-challenging as employing state-of-the-art codes of even a few decades ago. This is largely because major improvements in computer graphics and in availability of ready-made user-friendly input-output interfaces have paralleled development of these new codes, now in some cases outpacing actual new analytical/procedure developments. This is something of a reversal from the first few decades of DOS-based rock engineering computational experience, when only rudimentary graphics were available and user-friendly input-output interfaces were virtually non-existent."

This report describes the first phase of a general investigation designed to ascertain whether an electronic roof-testing device can be developed that will improve the ability to detect "loose" or "drummy" roof rock over that possible by striking the roof with a sounding bar and noting the character of the air vibrations with the unaided ear or the rock vibrations with the fingers. The amplitude, frequency content, and duration of the vibrations produced by striking solid and drummy roof rock with a hammer or sounding bar have been measured. Results disclosed that there is a significant difference between the characteristics of the vibrations produced in solid and drummy roof. This difference is such that the design of an electronic device to indicate quantitatively the condition of the roof rock appears possible. INTRODUCTION The conventional method of roof testing consists of striking the roof with a bar2/ and judging its soundness from the character of the air vibrations heard with the ear and/or the rock vibrations felt with the fingers -a procedure that depends upon the experience and the sensory abilities of the observer. Impact testing of a solid roof rock usually produces a sharp ping or click, whereas impact testing of a drummy roof rock produces a dull thud or drummy sound. This method of roof testing is, at most, only a qualitative test, and many roof rocks are difficult to classify as drummy or solid.

The projected depletion and the increasing costs of petroleum and natural gas along with the public and governmental resistance to nuclear energy have caused coal to emerge as one of today's answers to both our short term and long term energy needs in power generation. In order to satisfy this need, major increases in coal production are mandatory, thus requiring more and higher capacity coal transfer terminals. The logic for selecting coal as the major fuel for power generation is based on many different reports on the existing and potential energy sources, which include petroleum, natural gas, hydropower, solar, geothermal, and nuclear. The following is a brief synopsis of these reports for each type of energy.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a common water pollution problem on active and abandoned coal mine sites in the eastern United States. AMD forms when surface mining brings unweathered pyrite-containing rocks to the surface or when deep mining allows oxygen to contact buried pyritic strata. In the absence of neutralizing compounds, the drainage that results can be extremely acidic and contaminated with dissolved iron, manganese, and sulfate. Drainages with pH < 3.0 and concentrations of sulfate greater than 1,000 mg/L, iron greater than 50 mg/L, and manganese greater than 10 mg/L are common. Where water flows through alkaline materials (such as limestone) before surfacing, the drainage is less acidic and occasionally circumneutral, but it can still contain high concentrations of sulfate and metals. Current water quality standards in the United States require that mine discharges have a pH between 6 and 9, total iron concentration less than 3.0 mg/L, and manganese less than 2.0 mg/L. At thousands of active and inactive mine sites, drainage does not meet these standards and is being treated before discharge by the mining company. At thousands of other sites, which were abandoned prior to the enactment of water pollution laws or were operated by companies that have gone bankrupt, untreated AMD is polluting receiving water systems. The standard mine drainage treatment system involves the addition of a1 kal ine chemicals to the water, which raises the pH and cause metals to precipitate in a settling pond. These systems are expensive, often costing tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars per year for chemicals, operation, maintenance, and disposal of the metal- laden sludge. Because the drainage on many sites will likely be contaminated for decades, there is financial incentive to find alternative water treatment systems. In the last five years, many mining companies and engineering firms have experimented with the construction of wetland treatment systems. Very few of the several hundred wetland systems that have been built are performing well enough to justify total abandonment of chemical treatment. Nonetheless, systems continue to be built because the mining companies have found that wetlands can reduce their AMD treatment costs. It is also their hope that further research and development will eventually result in systems that will completely rep1 ace chemical treatment and offer long term performance at minimal cost. The Bureau of Mines has been actively involved, from a research perspective, with this approach to AMD treatment since its inception. In this paper, the status of constructed wetland technology is discussed with respect to the construction and performance of systems, chemical and biological processes that affect AMD chemistry within constructed wetlands, and the future of this technology as perceived by the Bureau of Mines. ORIGINAL OBSERVATIONS The constructed wetland concept has its roots in observations of natural Sphaqnum peat wetlands that received acid mine drainage and, instead of being adversely affected, appeared to cause an amelioration of the polluted water (Huntsman et al. 1978; Wieder and Lang 1982). These observations instigated the idea that wet1 and systems might be used for the intentional treatment of mine drainage. Because the discharge of AMD into a natural wetland is prohibited in the U.S. by several laws, it has been necessary to construct wetlands which act solely as water treatment systems. Initially, most wetland research and construction efforts mimicked the original observations by utilizing Sphaqnum moss and peat. Despite promising laboratory results (Kleinmann et al. 1983; Tarleton et al. 1984; Burris et al. 1984; Gerber et al. 1985), virtually all field tests of Sphasnum-dominated constructed wetlands failed to provide sufficient water treatment for more than several months. preparation of specification coals for the utility industry is approached from the standpoint of a cooperative effort with the power company to assure that the shipped product will be a noncorrosive coal. Selective mining, coal preparation, the use of additives, and coal blending are mine-site techniques proposed as means for upgrading corrosion-retarding constituents of utility coals (CaO and MgO) while, at the same time, reducing the concentration of those constituents of coal (Na20 and K,O) which cause corrosion. Data obtained from large-scale boiler testing in combination with bench-scale physical and chemical tests are used as a basis for the formulation of mine-site procedures to improve coal combustion utilization. Electric power generation remains the greatest market for coal in the United States. A major reason for this strong market has been the ability of the coal industry to supply a superior product for combustion while maintaining competitive prices. Now that the coal industry is engaged in intensive competition with nuclear power for future energy demand, it becomes ever more imperative that superior coal products are produced. One important problem when burning some coals is a liquid phase corrosive attack on boiler tube metal in the superheater and reheater areas of the furnace where steam temperatures may exceed 1050°F. In addition to causing power outages and high maintenance costs, corrosion is a continuing barrier to the future development of more efficient steam cycles which permit lower generation costs when using coal. Research methods of the past which have been directed at finding solutions which could be applied at the power plant site have been only partially successful and are generally costly. This paper contains a suggested --method of corrosion control through investigation of the problem at the source of the trouble—the coal supplier facility. It is proposed that mine-site pre-ventative procedures be considered as an effective means of cooperative corrosion control between the power company and the coal supplier. Economic justification must be applied to the individual situation. This paper is based on recent work by Combustion Engineering, Inc. and the Coal Research Bureau of West Virginia University under a contract from the Department of the Interior Office of Coal Research.&apos;,&apos; Results which are of importance to this discussion may be summarized as follows: 1) The alkali minerals of coal (Na2O and K2O), as measured by an acid leaching process, can be related to corrosion rate in utility boilers. As these constituents increase in a coal product, its corrosiveness can be expected to worsen. 2) The alkaline-earth minerals contained in coal, reported as total CaO and MgO reduce corrosiveness 2s their concentration increases. 3) Naturally occuring, alkaline-earth-bearing materials, such as limestone and dolomite, may be added to a coal to reduce its corrosiveness. 4) Coals with very low iron contents tend to be less corrosive. These results provide the groundwork for examination of the system of operations which occur at the supplier facility from the seam face where mining is begun to the point of loading for shipment. The Mining System Fig. 1 is a cross section of one of the typical coal seams (designated coal A) that was boiler tested during this research program. This seam is overlain by material which consists primarily of a gray-black shale. In the lower third of this seam, there exists a thin rock parting of less than 4 in. in thickness which is consistent throughout the seam. The floor material is fireclay. Malmberget is a sublevel caving mine owned and operated by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB), a Swedish state-owned iron ore mining company, in northern Sweden. The mine has an annual iron ore production of approximately 15 Mtpa. The current strategy foresees an expansion which will increase the mine’s depth considerably. Ventilation and air conditioning modelling for the planned expansion is ongoing. One of the most influential parameters for ventilation planning anddesign for a deep mine is geothermal gradient, which is crucial for the design of the refrigeration system. It is determined through virgin rock temperature (VRT) measurements carried out at various depth below the surface. This paper details these measurements and the determination of geothermal gradient for Malmberget Mine for the expansion study, which were necessitated by thelack of information for the focus depth and area.

INTRODUCTION This manuscript is based on site inspections of five existing mines and the detailed analysis of two of the five. The detailed analysis and mathematical models of the two mines are presented herein in order to demonstrate a method of predicting mine water inflow using existing mines as a data base. Water management procedures were studied at all mines. Our original criteria for mine selection were that the mines be less than five years old and have an inflow rate in excess of 2000 gpm (7.6 m3/min). Background hydrologic and hydrogeologic data were required so that two of the mines could be used for our computer modeling experiments. Our original criteria proved to be difficult to meet. We contacted numerous mines via various sources. Many mines were unable to meet the cri¬teria stated or were not interested in cooperating with us. Therefore, we allowed some flexibility in the application of these criteria to satisfy our orig¬inal requirements. Although the visitations at all the mines are not discussed herein the characteristics of the two mines simulated are presented. These simulated mines consist of a uranium mine in New Mexico and a lead mine in Missouri. The mines and owners will remain anonymous by request. URANIUM MINE-CASE HISTORY NUMBER 1 Mine Location The uranium mine that we simulated is located in northwestern New Mexico. The ground surface at the uranium mine is at an elevation of approx¬imately 7000 ft (2134 m) above mean sea level. The climate is arid to semi-arid with an average annual precipitation of approximately 10 in. (25.4 cm) (John and West, 1963). Geologic Setting It is essential that a conceptual model of the stratigraphy, hydrostratigraphy, and structural geology of a mine site be developed prior to simulation by a mathematical model. If such a conceptual model is not developed prior to simulation major errors are difficult to avoid. The uranium mine we have simulated is located in the San Juan Basin (Fig. 68), which is a structural basin located in northwestern New Mexico and adjacent parts of Colorado, Arizona, and Utah. The sedimentary rocks present in the deepest part of the basin are nearly 15,000 ft (4572 m) thick (John and West, 1963). The regional dip of the sedimen¬tary rocks in the Grants area is generally northward toward the San Juan Basin; the regional attitude is modified locally by normal faults and folds (Hilbert, 1963). The rocks of interest in this area are sedimentary in origin and range in age from Penn¬sylvanian to Cretaceous. They rest on the Precam¬brian core of the Zuni Uplift. Associated intrusive and extrusive rocks are of Tertiary and Quaternary ages (Hilbert, 1963). The deepest sedimentary unit of interest at this mine site is the Morrison Formation as described by Hilbert (1963). The Morrison Formation con¬sists of three members in the general area of the mine site; the deepest member is the Recapture. The Recapture Member consists of alternating beds of gray sandstone and grayish red siltstone or mud¬stone with strata up to several feet in thickness. Only a few small deposits of uranium are contained within the Recapture Member. The Westwater Canyon Member overlies the Recapture Member of the Morrison Formation. The Westwater Can¬yon Member is approximately 150 ft (46 m) thick and consists of light brown to gray, poorly sorted, arkosic sandstone, and some interbedded gray mud¬stone. The Poison Canyon Formation denoted in subsequent discussions, tables, and figures was de¬termined to be a part of the Westwater Canyon Member. The separate connotation is used for the description of mining operations and hydraulic properties but a separate physical description is not included. This member of the Morrison Formation contains many large deposits of uranium. This is (some pages in this article are damaged)

"The Mine, Health and Safety Act No. 29 of 1996, as amended, embodies worker self-regulation to advance health and safety in the workplace. An important provision for this is the Right to Refuse Dangerous Work (RRDW). This paper explores worker perspectives about the implementation of RRDW on South African mines against a backdrop of revised guidance in the sector: ‘Guideline for a Mandatory Code of Practice on the Right to Refuse Dangerous Work And Leave Dangerous Working Places’, gazetted in February 2016 by the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR). A mixed methods study conducted at mines (n = 14) included a survey of workers (n = 293), focus groups (n = 6) and in-depth interviews (n = 16). Workers reported a high level of awareness, a positive attitude, and experience of the formal RRDW. However constraints to the formal RRDW meant that informal worker resistance to dangerous work was commonplace. Evidence of informal non-confrontational consultation, cooperation, and collaboration in the event of a dangerous workplace also emerged between workers, and supervisors. The research underscores the importance of the RRDW and worker health and safety representatives to mine health and safety. The revised guidance addresses RRDW implementation gaps, but of concern is the potential partiality towards management interests. IntroductionEnsuring that mineworkers act on their duties and responsibilities for health and safety remains a concern across the globe. Article 13 of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention Safety and Health in Mines (176 of 1995) entrenched the Right to Refuse Dangerous Work (RRDW) as an important mechanism through which workers act in the best interests of their own occupational health and safety (OHS) and is considered a cornerstone of worker self-regulation (ILO, 1995). Countries ratifying Convention 176 are under obligation to make this right available to workers through OHS legislation that frames the circumstances, procedure, and protection of workers from discrimination in the event of a formal work refusal. The Convention has been ratified by 31 countries, with South Africa becoming a signatory in June 2000 (ILO, 2000). Worldwide studies show that workers use this right with caution (Hilgert, 2013) and cases associated with work refusal are rarely presented in court (Gunningham, 2007; Cooper, 2013). A Monte Carlo simulation technique has been used to study dynamic recrystallization in polycrystals. A continuum microstructure of the polycrystal is modeled employing a discrete lattice. The response of the material to hot deformation is simulated by adding stored energy and recrystallization nuclei continuously with time. The experimentally observed nonuniform character of deformation substructures is modeled by employing a phenomenological expression for inhomogeneous distribution of the stored energy. All simulations were performed on HP-Apollo 9000 Series 700 workstations. A program written in FORTRAN with use of PHIGS graphics library calls was used to interactively monitor the current state of the matrix and all relevant parameters: deformation stress, average grain size and effective nucleation rate. Visual analysis of the simulated microstructure allows a better understanding of the data developed by averaging over a number of very long Monte Carlo runs. Since the essential features of dynamic recrystallization are accurately reproduced by the model, it is used to discuss the role of the controlling mechanisms of the dynamic recrystallization in real polycrystal.

Three filter cloth fabrics commonly used in drains for coal waste embankments were tested by the Bureau of Mines for clogging behavior and deterioration under simulated field conditions. The objective was to provide guidelines for the mining industry for the proper selection and use of filter cloths to assure safer embankments at mine waste disposal sites. The filter cloths were tested with three coal waste samples in stand-pipes used to simulate coal mine waste disposal environments. Two of the cloths showed a tendency to become clogged with fines from the wastes. One waste caused clogging by precipitating an iron-silicon compound on the test cloths. No apparent cloth deterioration resulted from exposures to the simulated coal waste environments. (The exposures ranged from 2 to 12 months.) In other tests, exposures to waters in the pH range of 2 to 12 and to reagents used in coal-preparation plants resulted in insignificant or no deterioration, as measured by tensile strength. However, long exposures to sunlight (ranging from 4.6 to 6 months) caused major deterioration in two of the cloths (86-and 98-pct losses in tensile strength) and slight deterioration in the third cloth (9-pct loss in strength).

Aperam is a global player in producing of stainless, electrical and special steel qualities. The steelmaking plant in Timoteo Brasil is equipped with one AODconverter for stainless steel and one MRPL-converter for special steel production. After almost 20 years of operation Aperam decided to exchange the existing 80 t MRP-L converter by a new one including a new trunnion ring and a state of the art suspension system. Due to an optimized design the inner volume of the new converter could be increased which comes along with improved production. A special feature is a flange connection in the barrel section of the converter. This allowed to avoid any critical site welding and the time between shut down of the old and cold commissioning of the new converter could be done with 17 days only.

"The Experimental Mine at the Missouri University of Science and Technology is undergoing major developments. The underground workings are being expanded to include a ramp down to a second level which will comprise of larger opening and room sizes to better simulate modern mine layouts. Thisexpansion will enable the Experimental Mine to be utilized for many more generations. In addition, the new 15,000 sq. ft. Kennedy Mine Building is being constructed and will house the mine office,classrooms, and three laboratories to accommodate the mining and explosives engineering programs’ ever-increasing enrollment. With these new developments come an increasing need for safety and awareness in regards to explosives and blasting. This paper will utilize the Institute of ExplosivesMakers Safety Analysis of Risk (IMESAFR) software tool, to assess current magazine compliance withthe increased personnel limits and mine building location. Furthermore, this paper will assess theimplementation of a wireless blast warning system consisting of warning beacons and a centrally located siren which will be integrated with the construction of the Kennedy Mine Building. This warning system will provide the necessary precautions to safely conduct blasting-related experiential learningopportunities and research projects, and will enable facility staff to more efficiently oversee blastingoperations at the Experimental Mine. "
