The Bureau of Mines conducted corrosion research to determine suitable construction materials for geothermal resource recovery plants. Weight loss, pitting and crevice corrosion, U-bend stress corrosion, and electrochemical polarization measurements were made on selected metals in brine and steam process environments produced from high-enthalpy hypersaline brine from geothermal well Magmamax No. 1 at the Salton Sea Known Geothermal Resources Area, Imperial Valley, Calif. Cadmium (and by extension cadmium coatings) and a 6061-T6 aluminum alloy were unsatisfactory because of high general corrosion rates and, in the case of aluminum, severe pitting Molybdenum and niobium (columbium) were resistant to general corrosion, pitting, and crevice corrosion, Copper alloys corroded at rates that may preclude their use in wellhead brine, The presence of iron accelerated the corrosion of the copper alloys Titanium alloys were resistant to general corrosion and stress corrosion cracking in all of the environments. They exhibited crevice corrosion in some of the brine and steam environments and Ti6A14V pitted in the brine environments. They exhibited passive behavior over a broad range of potentials. Exposure tests were conducted on a high-temperature polyphenylene sulfide thermoplastic (Ryton) in the same environments. A 40-pct-graphite fiber-reinforced Ryton composite deteriorated readily in wellhead brine and failed in all of the brine and steam process environments; Ryton coatings on 316L stainless steel were adherent and performed well.

Introduction During the past ten years, shaft sinking has been going on continuously at Inco and new shafts and shaft extensions have been sunk under a broad diversity of conditions. The Murray mine and the Stobie section of the Frood-Stobie mine have?been opened and a main hoisting and supply shaft has been sunk at each of these mines; No. 2 shaft at Murray was sunk initially from surface to 1,960 feet and is now being extended; No. 7 shaft at Stobie was sunk from surface to 3,105 feet. No. 2 shaft at Garson has been extended from 2,200 feet to 3,200 feet in depth. At Levack, No. 2 shaft is being extended from 1,860 feet to 2,850 feet for ore hoisting from the 2,650 lev el. At Creighton, No. 6 shaft, collared on 52 level, was sunk 1,740 feet to a total depth of 5,563 feet below surface. It is the deepest Inco working. At Creighton, also, No. 7 shaft is being sunk from surface to the 30 level to handle the ore from caving operations. Ail Inco main hoisting and supply shafts sunk during the past twenty years have been vertical rectangular shafts equipped with two cages and two ore skips. The cages are standard and interchangeable for all shafts except Garson No. 2; they are single-deck, 13 ft. 4 in. by 5 ft. 2 in. inside and are designed to carry a maximum material load of 16,000 lb. The man load is 48 men. Skip capacities at the several shafts vary from 8 to 15 tons. Forty-two hundred feet bas been established as the standard vertical lift, and the permanent hoisting equipment at each shaft is designed for eventual hoisting from that depth.

Fragmentation in sublevel caving (SLC) is vitally important. Both gravity flow and any downstream processes are affected. Reasonably coarse fragmentation may lead to larger draw bodies (isolated extraction zones) and hence potentially higher primary ore recovery and depressed/delayed waste rock inflow from above. Fewer flow disturbances are expected by mitigating oversize. In addition, it requires less boulder handling and reduces wear and possible hang-up problems in orepasses. To assess the present-day functionality of large-scale SLC, a multiyear, comprehensive measurement program was initiated. It covers the main elements for SLC, namely blast function, fragmentation and gravity flow. The present paper focuses on fragmentation measurements. An image acquisition system was used to document the drawpoint and the load-haul-dump (LHD) bucket for each mucking cycle. At the beginning, four buckets (about 70 t total) were sieved to validate the results of both 2D and 3D image analysis techniques. The fundamental and specific problems are discussed herein. At the moment, fragmentation of the SLC rings is evaluated using a quick rating system and a 2D fragment delineation software. The results enable a description of fragmentation and its variation during mucking but also – combined with the gravity flow measurements – conclusions on the fragmentation for different parts of the SLC ring. Possible influences on flow disturbances and ore recovery/dilution are investigated. "INTRODUCTION Comprehensive overviews of the world-class talc deposits and related prospects in Montana were published by Olson (1976) and by Berg (1979). Both of these compilations include detailed descriptions and maps of the talc deposits and occurrences and were followed by a regional map and summary descriptions of the talc deposits published by Van Gosen et al. (1998). More recent publications, descriptions and field guides for some of the deposits include Underwood et al. (2014), Cerino et al. (2007), and Cerino (2002). The present paper focuses on some of the more recent ideas regarding talc formation that have developed since the publication of the earlier overviews. Olson (1976) reported that talc production from the deposits in southwestern Montana was over 200,000 tons in 1974 and that talc production had doubled between 1969 and 1974. The last year for which the U.S. Geological Survey published production records for talc by state was 1993. Production in Montana in 1993 was 350,000 tonnes (Virta, 1994). Remaining reserves are substantial at all three of the producing mines in the district. Minerals Technologies Inc., the parent company of Barretts Minerals Inc., stated in its 2014 annual report that it has reserves of 2,791,000 tons of talc. Imerys stated in its financial report for 2014 that it had 19,638,000 tons of proven and probable talc reserves at its North American mines. Although the Imerys reserves were not reported by individual mines or states, a large proportion of the total reserves would likely consist of the reserves at the Yellowstone mine, located south of Ennis, Montana. Talc mined in southwestern Montana is of high purity and is the quality used in a wide variety of applications including paints, ceramics, plastics, rubber, coatings, agriculture, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. GEOLOGIC SYNOPSES FOR MAJOR MINES AND COMMENTS ON REGIONAL DISTRIBUTION OF TALC OCCURRENCES The general geology of southwestern Montana is shown in Figure 1along with the locations of the three producing talc deposits in the area and the extent of pre-Belt marbles that host all of the talc mines and prospects. The term “pre-Belt” is used in the present paper because zircon and other radiometric data developed in recent years indicates that the metamorphic rocks that form the crystalline basement for the middle Proterozoic Belt basin in the Dillon Tectonic Block of southwestern Montana includes both Archean and Paleoproterozoic rocks (O’Neill et al., 1996; Foster et al., 2006; McDonald et al., 2012). An envelope or “corridor” has been superimposed on the geology in Figure 1 which encompasses all of the talc deposits that have a significant resource. This “talc corridor” will be discussed in later sections of this report. The more important talc deposits are discussed in this report section."

The number of persons fatally injured in the California petroleum industry in 1932 was 24, a decrease of 6, or 20 percent from the number killed in 1931. The decrease in the number of fatalities occurring in 1932 caused the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry to reach its lowest point in 10 years. Changing conditions in the oil industry - reduced personnel, decreased active field development, and curtailed production - have undoubtedly caused a part of this decrease, but continued accident-prevention efforts by the industry have also contributed to the reduction in the number of fatalities for 1932. The Bureau of Mines has analyzed and reported annually the fatalities in the California petroleum industry for a period of 10 years. Figure 1 shows the trend of fatal accidents during that period. Fatality statistics for 1932 show that the drilling and producing, pipe line and transportation, and refining and natural gasoline divisions of the industry had fewer accidents in 1932 than in 1931, sales and marketing being the only division that showed an increase over 1931. The number of fatalities by divisions for 1931 and 1932, percent of total, and percentages of increase and decrease are given in Table 1.

From November 1943 to April 1944, the Bureau of Mines put down 18 churn-drill holes aggregating 2,571 feet of bore in an investigation of the virtually abandoned zinc deposits of the north-central Arkansas district, principally in Marion, Boone, Searcy, and Newton Counties. The ore of this area occurs in flat-lying sedimentaries of the Mississippian and Ordovician ages. Much of the zinc is in the form of carbonate and silicate, although some sulfide has been produced. Preliminary studies resulted in selection for investigation of the Big Hurricane mine in northwest Searcy County, the Spies mine in northeast Newton County, and the Coon Hollow mine in eastern Boone County The comparatively large production of th.ese properties in the past was a factor in the selection. This report describes the work accomplished in the investigation and presents the data obtained.

Stream-sediment sampling undertaken to define the regional geochemistry of northern Scotland is described with particular reference to the errors involved. The region is underlain essentially by Moine schists, Caledonian granites and Old Red Sandstone sediments, which are generally characterized by low geochemical relief. Factors in the secondary environment obscure the relationship between trace-metal concentrations in stream sediments and bedrock geology. Investigation of sampling and sample preparation methods indicates that the -100-mesh material is the optimum size fraction for the regional survey of this area: it provides adequate geochemical contrast: it reduced the incidence of spurious high values in the samples investigated and it is available in amounts which are adequate for all the analyses required. Grinding samples improves precision and reduces the preferential volatilisation of metals coprecipitated with hydrous manganese and iron oxides for the optical emission spectroscopic method used initially. A study of the dispersion of metals in the drainage system of an area of Pb-Ba-Mo mineralisation and an area of U-Pb mineralisation, respectively, indicates that a sampling interval of 1 per 2 km2 based on second- or third-order streams is adequate to define anomalous metal concentrations. Regional variation can also be represented on the same interval. Modifications to the sampling procedure to reduce the effects of the secondary environment are complicated by the primary association of Mn and Fe with mineralisation in the area. The ratio of analytical and sampling error to regional variance shows that procedural precision is adequate to prepare regional geochemical maps of northern Scotland, with the exception of Cr, Cu at low concentrations and Pb.

When only wide-spaced drilling is available, for example at concept, prefeasibility and feasibility stages, properly implemented linear estimation (including ordinary kriging) predicts grade tonnage relationships that are over-smoothed compared to final production estimates (and production). Non-linear estimation and conditional simulation are alternative geostatistical approaches that can provide more reliable estimates of the recoverable tonnage and grade from wide-spaced drilling. Non-linear estimation and conditional simulation have been rarely used on iron ore deposits. However, these techniques have had wide application in other commodities such as gold and base metals. Conditional simulation has been used in the iron ore industry (eg Guibal et al, 1997); however, its use here is outlined as a means of generating non-linear estimates, not just its use for variability and drill spacing analysis. As a rule, regardless of commodity, the decision to use non-linear geostatistics will necessitate increased skills and require more time. This decision must therefore be justified in terms of cost-benefit. Such cost-benefit analysis is not straightforward, and to help an approach for determining when linear estimates are inadequate is presented. Recommend in this paper is a well-established non-linear geostatistical approach, the global ædiscrete Gaussian modelÆ (DGM) of change of support, as a tool to establish whether moving from linear to non-linear estimates will materially improve estimate results. Also discussed is the additional use of DGM as a block model validation tool. One specific factor contributing to the lack of application of non-linear geostatistical methods in iron is the added difficulties that arise when conditional simulation and non-linear estimates are required to reproduce the numerous and often important correlations between variables in iron ore deposits. Consequently, presented in the paper is a synoptic review of non-linear estimation and simulation methodologies applicable to correlated variables.

In this paper, the development of the mining potential is analyzed at the regional scale and for the following mining camps: Rouyn-Noranda, Val d'OrMalartic, Bousquet-Cadillac and Matagami.The analysis is based on the following parameters: time, discovery method, depth and weight of metal extracted. Curves showing the cumulative number of deposits discovered as a function of time are ""S"" shaped with slope variations corresponding to changing discovery rates. Initiation, realization and stabilization of discovery cycles are thus well represented. Two ""mining booms"", 1922 to 1945 and 1955 to 1965, account for 72% of the mines identified to date.Most exploitable orebodies have been found near the surface: 90 %have their top between 0 and 100 meters, including 70% between 0 and 10 meters. Early discoveries were made by prospecting, followed by geophysics while the progressive development of the depth potential is being realized by a combination of methods. Approximately 80 %of the metal extracted comes from four mining camps which cover 8% of the area, but most of the production can be allributed to only a few large deposits. Based on these data, a new approach to the analysis of a mining region is proposed:1) The distribution showing deposit depth versus time is indicative of the maturity of a mining camp and can serve to evaluate its remaining potential.2) The ""S"" curve analysis can be used to extrapolate the success rate of a specific exploration method and also stresses the crucial role of innovation in exploration."

"INTRODUCTION The necessity for protection against the hazards of lightning manifests itself from time to time in the mining industry by reason of loss of life, damage to electrical equipment, fires in surface structures at mines, and accidents in the handling and use of explosives. This paper is intended to assemble, correlate, and present some of the salient points embodied in the available literature on the subject and at the same time give some factual data concerning instances of such loss of life and damage to property, with special application to the mining industry.The annual loss of life and destruction of property by lightning is considerable; the former may be prevented to a limited extent, though use of common sense as to exposure is required and not always followed; the latter can be prevented to a considerable degree. The manufacturers of electrical equipment, through improved types of lightning arresters, have done much toward the protection of electrical equipment, with consequent safeguarding of life and of property. Education based on unfortunate experiences has gone far to discourage the handling of explosives and blasting accessories during thunder storms, especially in open pits and quarries, and to a much smaller extent in underground workings. The lowly lightning rod plays an important role in the protection of certain types of buildings (especially isolated buildings), stacks, monuments, and other structures.LIGHTNING PHENOMENAIn 1751, Franklin proved that, lightning was simply a visible display of electricity - an extended spark; and until a generation ago little had been added to his exposition to define the various phases of the phenomenon. "The phased application of statistical process control (SPC) infers that processes are classifiable as pre-SPC (or phase zero), phase I and phase II processes, with different objectives being pursued in the different phases. Phase zero processes, defined as processes affected by assignable causes of variation, are characterised as follows: out-of-control with unknown autocorrelation structure having an unknown statistical distribution not performing consistently on target with minimum variability potentially incapable of conforming to the product specifications. The objectives of phase I SPC is to obtain estimates of the mean (µ), variance (s2), probability density function (f(X)) and the autocorrelation structure, as well as transforming the process into a phase II process (defined as a process conforming to specifications and performing on target with minimum variability). As in any other type of research or pragmatic improvement intervention, sampling is required is to achieve these objectives. The challenge of deciding a phase I sampling plan is multifarious since it has to cope with the aforementioned effects of assignable causes and provide for rigour estimates of the unknown parameters. Furthermore, deciding sampling plans in phase I invariably presents a classical catch-22 situation: appropriate sampling is required to determine the autocorrelation structure of a variable, but knowledge of the autocorrelation structure is required to formulate an appropriate sampling plan. Over the last six years I have been involved with the calculation of ore reserves and mine planning using various computer systems and soft- ware packages. This experience has given me a unique perspective from which to view the needs of the engineers and geologists whose job it is to produce geologic and mineable ore reserves. The purpose of this paper is to share that perspective with those who are in this field or are thinking of purchasing computer software to aid in these calculations. My first experience with computers in mining was the creation of a mini-computer based coal reserve and mine planning package written as part of my Easter's thesis. This package took about ten weeks to write, four weeks to document, and two weeks to install at the mine for which it was written. It did what it was designed to do, which was to emulate the hand procedure which had been used prior to its installation. The package was specific to its application which involved several small seams of coal being mined simultaneously and would have required major modification for it to be applied to a mine where, say, one thick seam was mined in two benches.

"All gold deposits within the Tisdale Group are spatially associated with carbonate alteration zones; however, not all carbonate alteration zones are host to gold mineralization.Within the komatiitic and magnesium tholeiitic volcanic rocks at the base of the Tisdale Group, discordant and stratabound carbonate alteration zones occur throughout. The alteration zones consist of a ferroan dolomite - quartz inner assemblage which is enveloped by calcite-quartz and an outer chlorite-rich subzone. Factors which control the distribution of carbonate alteration include joint systems, flow contacts, synvolcanic faults and bulk composition of the host rock.Two environments of carbonate alteration can be recognized: 1) The subsea-floor alteration zones developed within the volcanic rock succession where hydrothermal fluids did not discharge directly onto the sea floor. Insignificant gold production has come from this alteration environment. 2) Seafloor zones, which represent points of hydrothermal fluid discharge into the hydrosphere, are spatially associated with felsic volcanic rock complexes and are host to syngenetic, auriferous cherty dolomite.Carbonatized, magnesium tholeiitic basalts, which are host to the auriferous, cherty dolomite, are enriched in antimony (>0.35 ppm), boron (>30 ppm), gold (>5 ppb) and lithium (> 35 ppm), but are depleted in copper ( < 70 ppm), with respect to carbonatized basalts not associated with gold. Orerelated, altered komatiitic flows can be screened using gold (>5 ppb), lead(> 10 ppm), arsenic(> 70 ppm) and antimony (>1 ppm).The habit, petrographic characteristics and certain geochemical characteristics of the altered volcanic rocks suggest that the hydrothermal fluid was of sea-water origin."

The valuation of mineral properties in the U.S. is only partially regulated. The regulations which have jurisdiction or impact appear to have such mainly as a consequence of unintended fallout, since the regulations were designed for other purposes. Court case history can also be important. The combined results are a mixture of bad and good, with important lessons to be learned. Since 1981, the Securities and Exchange Commission has prohibited U.S. listed companies from reporting quantitative estimates of mineralization and the value of mineralization, other than proven and probable reserves. This results in the minerals appraiser (valuator) working with a shortage of data in his everyday work, both on the subject property and in sales analysis. Between 1989 and 1995, all 50 states and essentially all federal agencies adopted the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) for real property appraisals (valuations). The major national appraisal societies also require their members to abide by USPAP. A significant portion of minerals appraisals must now follow these standards. This paper will discuss the content of USPAP. It provides a very good framework for the valuation of a minerals property or a mine, both as real property and as a business. However, the credentialing standards for real property appraisers are now prohibitive for minerals appraisers.

This is one of a series of-Information Circulars dealing with mining and milling methods and costs at mines in various districts in the United States. The Hog Mountain gold mining district is of the northern edge of Tallapoosa County, in the east central part of the State of Alabama. The district is equally close to Goodwater and to Alexander City, both stations on the main line of the Central of Georgia Railroad. From Alexander City the mine is reached by 13 miles of graded road, traveling in a northeast direction. In dry seasons the road is good; in wet weather it is bad but passable. Improvements are being made constantly on the road, so that in the near future the gravel road should be good under all weathered conditions.

"THE REVIVAL of the Mayo mining camp, with particular reference to the activities of United Keno Hill Mines, Limited, has been one •of the more spectacular and also one of the most important of the post-war developments in the Canadian mining field. The geological location of the camp, coupled with other natural disadvantages, have in the past limited the mining area to small-scale, highgrading operations, but the post-war improvement in metal prices has now broadened the possibilities and has led to the considerable success achieved by United Keno Hill Mines, Limited, and the present boom-type development by a whole host of newcomers to the field.LocationYukon which has an area of 207,000 square miles, is showing ever increasing possibilities as a mineral source of great value and more and more attention is being focussed on the Territory. The accompanying generalized map (Figure 1) shows the main transportation routes and mining districts.The Mayo Mining District comprises roughly the eastern two thirds of Yukon Territory lying north of McMillan river and south of the Peel. The district was one of the first in the Territory in which placer gold was discovered, but the occurrences proved of minor importance. Other minerals reported include ores of tungsten, tin, antimony, and several other metals, but of primary importance have been the ores containing silver-lead-zinc-cadmium now being developed and mined in the Keno area. Similar ores have been found over a very considerable area, extending some 50 miles north, 15 miles east, 30 miles west, and 10 miles south of the townsite of Keno Hills, Keno City, a total area of 2,700 square miles."

"The Code was developed in 2004 through the Collaboration Agreement between Institution of Mining Engineers of Chile (IIMCh) and the Ministry of Mining (Chile) in Dec 2002. It is an amalgamation of current practices with respect to standards and procedures for exploration prospects, mineral resources, and reserves for the purpose of public reporting. Certification is required to prepare and issue information on mineral assets according to the guidelines that regulate the technical, economic, and environmental aspects that satisfy the conditions set by the Chilean capital and financial markets.The Mineral Resources Committee of the Instititution of Mining Engineers of Chile (IIMCh) is pleased to introduce theCode for the Certification of Exploration Prospects, Mineral Resources and Reserves which is the result of a Collaboration Agreement between the IIMCh and the Ministry of Mining established in December, 2002.This code synthetizes the present practice of the mining industry in regard to standards and procedures applied to exploration prospects, mineral resources, and reserves with the purpose of reporting publicly on financial instruments based on these mine assets in the capital markets. These standards follow general criteria already adopted and applied by capital markets in those countries characterized by a very dynamic and well developed mining sector such as Australia, Canada, Southafrica, United Kingdom, and others. The work done by the Mineral Resources Committee of the IIMCh has had the recognition of the Combined Reserves International Reporting Standards Committee (CRIRSCO) that leads the establishement of an international code in these matters. CRIRISCO is an entity formed by representatives of the countries previously mentioned, a representative of the Society of Mining Engineers of the UStates and a representative of the IIMCh. In January, 1969, the Central Research Division of Continental Oil Company initiated a research program on roof control. The purpose of the research was to improve roof stability. Toward this end, it was necessary to determine which of the many geological and geometrical variables have a significant effect on roof stability. The isolation of these significant variables would allow research effort to be concentrated where it would be most effective in improving roof control. The research effort was directed toward two major objectives. One was to de-fine the geological and/or geometrical parameters that affect the severity of roof conditions in any particular area of the mine. This study was concerned with roof fall intensity. The second was to define why roof falls in Humphrey No. mine (and in northern West Virginia-south-western Pennsylvania coal mining areas) are oriented so that they occur primarily in north-south rooms or entries. This study was concerned with roof fall orientation. To provide a reference framework for further discussion, a geological description of the area is presented in Part II. In Parts III and IV, the procedures, methods, and &apos;results of the research applied toward the afore-mentioned major objectives are presented. Part V contains the conclusions and recommendations for-warded by this study.

This paper discusses the relationship between frother types and coal flotation as a function of particle size. It has been found that each frother has a unique size fraction that it will float effectively. This fact is very important when it comes to selecting a reagent scheme that will provide maximum recovery of both coarse and fine particles. Improvements in recovery can be attained when the chemical relationships between frother type and particle size floated are understood. Data from plant evaluations using commercial and developmental frothers are presented to verify the importance of frother types versus size fraction floated.
